I believe the last request was .........show me something on your layout you want to redo.

Does the club layout count?  There are about 30 like this that I have wanted to rebuild for years.

Show me something FOOLISH!   Something whimsically foolish that is.

Here is a construction AREA, but not much actual construction shows.  (And it's been a while since I've taken this shot, without much progress here.)   There IS some hidden staging track laid back behind the export grain elevator mockup, and the false-front mockup of shipside cargo sheds.  The offshore oil rig under construction is safety award trophy from a garage sale, not yet rehabilitated for use as a background model.

Cars sitting on blue foam show where future industry spurs are to be laid, after hidden layover and test loop trackage is laid and trouble-shot.

Today is the second of the month.  Show me your second something- your second loco or second car or second structure, etc.

The second structure I built on my layout was the turntable. Here it is right after I finished building, weathering, wiring & installing it:

Here it is as it looks now:

Now, show me your favorite structure on your layout.

(oops re-read, I think you wanted a structure).  So if this doesn't fit, go back to a structure/kit or scratchbuilt and reference photos.

Mostly scratchbuilt.

G scale Silver Vista, selectively compressed to match the dimensions of an LGB D&RGW coach.  Kind of a pain to do as I made the roof removable.

Thanks Lee.

Nice photo of the remake by Durango & Silverton (D&S).  The real car, the one I based my model on, was destroyed in the Alamosa shop fire back in 1950s.  Amazing that the D&S would rebuild from scratch this beautiful and unique car.

Here's a great article on the history of the Silver Vista:

Anyone have the older late 1800s locos that you could show?

We bought some of that coal at salvage, and even though the salvage company used magnets to pull (most) of the metal out, the ballast was sure hard on our shear pins!

More Named Passenger Trains You Ask?

How about the Twentieth Century Limited... inspired by the famous 1923 painting by William H. Foster I tried to recreate the famous view in three different eras. 1936, 1938 and 1948. Here's my humble effort...

OK, I know the Early Bird boxcar wasn't around in 1938... I'll fix that in another shoot!

Enjoy! Show me another "Night Shot"Big Smile

The BNSF and UP tracks on the mainland end of the Galveston, Texas causeway run past a subdivision of "stilt" beach houses that are hopefully above hurricane tide levels.

Not yet installed on layout....

When my handpainted backdrop developed a crack in one area I tried to ignore it.  It didn't go away.  It bugged me..

I tried not to notice it when a train went by it.  Didn't work.

So I decided to 'improve' the area the only way I could think of that didn't require sanding, taping and trying to match the paint again.

Works for me!

A small structure- but a house.  A small two-room rental house.

My prototype town, Galveston, has a residential pattern in the older parts of town with alleys dividing nearly every block.  Larger houses are built on the front of the lot, and tiny houses on the back facing the alley.  In 19th century, there were servant quarters, later became rental property.  This is the N "Dill's Market" kit built as an alley house, built on pier and beam above ground as some precaution against Galveston's periodic storm flooding.  I recently learned that Galveston's street and alley pattern was laid out by Gail Borden before he became the milk millionaire.

Show me something you built "not according to kit directions."

Show me another model railroad 'thing'.

Not a loco, not a car, and not a structure, but self-propelled: It's a coke pusher that I scratchbuilt from plans in a Dean Freytag article in MR sometime in the late '90s.  It pushes red-hot coke out of a coke oven 'cell' into a quench car waiting on the other side.

Let's see some more 'things'

The coke pusher looks great.

My coke oven has some scratch built machines on it. My pusher is freelanced and not visible. On the visable side is the chute used to load in the quench car.  (Quench car not in picture). The chute travels back and forth and was made to look like one in a photo In Mr. Freytag's book. Above this machine is the machine that travels across the top to dump coal into the ovens to make coke. .... The crane is used to pick up spilled coke and was made from a European kit.

Please show one or more gondolas

Not a lot Bob, if I can animate it you'll be the first to know how many 40 foot box cars the horses will pull on a 2 1/2% grade though finding somewhere to add the weight could be fun. Smile, Wink & Grin

Is this oddball enough? The only Alco C430 with AAR trucks to ever wear Conrail blue?

They only had 2 with these trucks, and the other former Reading unit only got a patch job.

Let's see some more oddball or rare engines!

I would KILL for this model! I know the prototype was a failure, but who cares! It would look GREAT in HO! And just imagine a woodburner sound and smoke to it...amazing!

I think no manufacturer has ever made a model of it yet. The model in the photo is a unique model built for the State of California Railroad Museum. By the way interesting info I just read: it was the last Central Pacific steam locomotive that received a name. After it they all only had numbers but no names anymore.

De Luxe, your photo... while interesting, doesn't qualify.  It needs to be from your layout or your clubs layout, and since you didn't make a request I guess we're still looking for the last request.

Great looking model though.  Smile

The good old Mastadon class, if one can call a single locomotive a class.   Which by coincidence, Mastadon was the name of the Central Pacific's first 4-8-0.

To be honest I didn´t even realize that this is some kind of game inside this thread! In the beginning I just thought that it´s a thread where people post various photos of their stuff in order to show what´s new in their collection/on their layout and/or how they progress with their model railroader projects/work. Since I felt that my 2 trains that I photographed yesterday were worth of being shown here, I just put the photos inside this thread, like in some sense "that´s my new stuff for April 2013 and I just wanna show you this". But NOW I start to realize that this is a "show me something" game!!! Sorry for that! I´m not into these kind of games, so I leave it to another member to make a new "show me something" request/suggestion. Feel free to delete all my postings in this thread!

De Luxe,

There is a  weekly thread WPF or Weekly Photo Fun (Dates of the weekend Fri - Sun).  It is usually things that folks have been working on during the previous week.  This one is sort of a game, restarted each month.  If you go to the start of the thread the rules are often there.  Some months they don't renew them.  Look back over the lists at the end of or near the beginning of a month to find others.

Have fun,

Richard
