I know Jim, I couldn't resist using the glossy. It looks nice, yeah I know they were dull. I always liked trains but I soon discovered an exotic taste for military aircraft.

Jake I have two choices "Old Crow" from the 357th FG and 363rd FS, or "The Millie G" 55th FG, 343rd FS. I might take a bit of creative license and do "Lou IV" which has a yellow nose D-Day striping and green/aluminum camo.

Getting late. Night everyone. P.S. Garry: What fighter group is the P-51 being decorated for, and what model is it?

Evening, Janie, sorry for not saying something when you came on-shift. I was distracted with trying to figure what trim colors to use for my Merchants' Row buildings. Could I have a hot fudge sundae and a  Rio Grande  mug of decaf, please? Thank you. Smile

Mr. B., that discount sound really good! (Except for their not having the NESL wood) You made a pretty hefty haul, sounds like. BowYeah Enjoy all the scratchbuilding adventures (or do you already have some structures/ships in mind to be building?). And I was going to ask you if your 'story' was like somebody told me when I was in the Navy (about the difference between a fairy tale - "Once upon a time..." - and a sea story - "This ain't no ****..."

V8Dennis, there should be a setting in Firefox (under privacy, I think) where you can set the history to clear when Firefox quits. I suspect your error message at startup was something on the order of telling you that it couldn't restore the tabs from your previous session. You can usually safely ignore that message, and click to close that tab, then  open a new tab or window. Some of your difficulties may be that you have not a lot of RAM (memory, vs. storage, which would be your system's hard drive space...), and multiple windows can slow down Firefox in that case.

Couple of questions for you that will help get things running a bit more smoothly:  1) How much memory does your 'puter have (MB or GB)? and 2) Which version of Firefox do you have? Though I'm not a Windows guru, we have enough in here who should be able to give you more specific help from there (for example, Jeffrey, CajunChef Ryan, or CDN Dennis). You could go to the Firefox website (www.mozilla.org) and look up what version of Firefox they recommend for XP (and/or your system hardware/limitations)

Packer, maybe your #2 date was either up for a challenge (possibly with an angry streak?) or kinda interested in you (or maybe even a bit of both)? And where'd you find these gals, if I may ask? Smile, Wink & Grin Good luck, anyway.

Rob, on your pasture grass - were you wanting the grass for your critters, or was that kinda like those of us Diners who have yards to mow, and you really would prefer it not to be growing as quckly? (Hopefully, the former is the case...).

Broadway, while Ctrl-R (Command-R on a Mac) will work (and is preferred by us keyboard jockies), if you try F5 on a Mac, it controls the backlighting on my MBPro's keyboard..) Wink Besides, since many Windows users are used to using three fingers (for BSOD), only using two fingers shouldn't be a problem, right? Mischief Oh, one other caution for your soldering iron directions - "don't drop it on your furry belly, or it will singe your fur!"  (Hmm, he wrote "...always hot and waiting for me..." - sounds like a thriller intro for an old black & white horror movie!)

BN Gary, you know that the prototype SR-71's had/have more of a flat black (earlier stealth principles) appearance, right? But if you like the glossy finish, have at it!

Chris, it sounds like your new co-w**ker guy may not be much competition for the sports stuff (THAT editor may send him to the gallery openings, local high school plays, etc...). You're sure that your CFO didn't get in and mess with the gal's references?Whistling At least they're only (for now) hiring one person, so that shouldn't cut into your number of assignments very much. Right?

Welcome to the Diner, Mike B. (mbinsewi)! Sounds like you have an advantage on modeling your RR, with it being close by your area. What scale are you modeling in (and I'm guessing you might have it set in recent times - or am I off on that)? Fill us in a bit.

I think I found some previous Diner introductions and such that were posted earlier to familiarize yourself a bit with things here:

The usual 'schedule' for our virtual servers is Zoe - breakfast shift and weekdays, Chloe - dinner and night shift on weekdays, and on the weekend it could be Janie or Flo or (what's the newer gal's name, Diners?) (But all of that is subject to change if the twins - Zoe and Chloe - need to cover for one of the other servers. The Diner's cook can fix most anything you can describe (depending on how game you are to eat it if it's a new dish...). There's several booths, including one on the corner window, with a good view of the tracks for trainfanning, plus several tables and the usual counter. In the back there's a pool table and (might need some dusting off) a simple RR layout table, if you don't have company to talk with (like in the wee hours of the morning). In the winter time, you can warm yourself by the woodstove (it's toward the back).

Oh, one other thing - if you post the first post for a page (called the Top Of Page or TOP), you get to pay for the virtual food and beverage bill for that page. Zoe and Chloe will keep a tab for you, but don't get too late in paying, 'cause you don't want to have to talk with their cousin Vinnie (if you know what I mean...).

And just because a Diner patron is not moving, it doesn't mean that he or she has deceased on the premises. Some have been know to doze off for a few days (uh, Duke?...Zzz) after working hard at their day jobs. Oh, and in deference to some Diners who are allergic to the 'w' word (AKA 'w*rk'), we try to avoid using that word as much as possilbe.

If you're new to the Diner, it never hurts to fill the other Diners in on what kind of MRR'ing you are into - like scale, modeling freelance or a particular prototype, kind of layout you are designing or building, etc. We're a nosy friendly bunch, and it's fine to share how your day (MRR'ing stuff or other) has been, and we don't push religion or prayer, but if you want 'em, there are several of us who'll put in some for your needs.

Do keep in mind that this is a family establishment, including some of our fine teenage MR'ers, so watch your language, or Vinnie and Chloe will have the bar soap out for ya. If someone gets talking hot or heavy about kind of rant, there is a SoapBox in the corner that automatically will start creeping out and you'll find it underfoot.

That may cover most of the bigger stuff for you, hopefully. Feel free to ask any questions that you have, and somebody will fill you in - whether it's about MRR'ing topics, or other topics.

As for my MRR'ing today, I got part of the trim started on my Merchants' Row building this afternoon/evening; here's one of the walls:

On the section next to the right-end, I'm thinking some shade of blue for the 'ground floor' (below the greystone 2nd floor) and the molding at the top of that section. I think the store/bottom section on the right end will be white or antique white. Still have the trim in around the windows to do also.

Then while I was letting that dry, I started putting together the "Billy's Place" kit (another Main St. Heritage), which I may use for a small store of some kind (bakery, maybe?). I found that its size/shape is a bit like the DPM City Jail that I built a few months ago:

(The longer back stone wall is just set in place for these photos). Will need more cleanup on the 'brick' walls and the doors & windows, as well as coloring & weathering on the stone walls, of course.

Prayers will continue for those in need of healing, comfort, a good night's sleep, or other needs. (Wonder how CB&Q Garry's trip to the Southeast US is going?...)

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G. (where the wells are about full, and the frogs are looking for higher ground...)

Howdy everyone !  I've been "stickin' my head" in the door for along time now, so I thought a Saturday night would be a good time to come on in, and say hello.

A light beer in a frosted mug would be good, my dear, if you have one, if not, I'll take a long neck of whatever is cold.  Don't worry, I discovered this place is within walking distance.....so.. hows everyone tonight?  ... You can check out my profile, and read all about me,  which seems to be the "hot topic" in another thread I've been watching.  You can check out my links below, which you have to copy and paste, as I haven't figured out yet as how to make them "click-able" (is that a word ? )    I bet Jeff could show me how, if he's in here yet tonight, I know it's getting late.

So I'll just settle in, and join the conversation!

Mike.

I didn't do much today. Put a few things away. Pulled the rear number boards on the Pathmark GP40 and cleaned the silver paint off them. They came painted over from the factory. Now they look much better. I like seeing them light up when I run the loco in reverse. They don't have numbers but they didn't have any in the first place so no loss.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

I'm wondering on whether or not I want the P-51's cockpit open or closed. it'd make a great diorama, either way.

Evening guys

Got most of the BN and RI DW boxcars stuck together. Still waiting on paint to dry on the touch-up parts (I also spray the backside of the ladders).

In other train news, I may have found a bunch of various P2K Gp shells for cheap. Like 5 bucks a shell, minus any details, glazing, fans, etc. But the kicker is he has undec GP20 high-hood shells. These have the extra step that I've been modeling (using a custom-made bracket and cannon steps; it's a pain) and have solid pilots. I could use one for my GP5, and most (if not all) the BN GPs had these type of sills.

Ken, I detest soldering too. But I don't think the GP30 ever came without an 8-pin plug. 4 out of my 5  have them (the other one being DCC/sound), and it turns out a DH163L0 or D165L0 works with the factory bulbs. I switched 2 to LEDs. The other 2 I run in the middle of a consist (so no lights on).

Chris, I have 4 of those boxes, 1 each RF&P, BAR, EL, and WP. Western Pacific also had some and I think Canadian National had them. I didn't know about the DW cushion underframe being a direct fit. Strangely enough the underframe on the LL cars has lots of the same cushion parts, minus the extension. I think I may be able to cobble up an extended coupler box for them.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Mowing season has started. Grumpy Blackie the Mower is humming right along.

Well, most of the snow *is* gone now, and at the moment it *is* 70 grees outside, but not all of the icebergs have melted yet. Maybe this week I can get some fertilizer/weed control down.

Please, please tell me you don't really do that.

It has a very SAFE place, very secure, and fire resistant.

It will be some time before the LION gets to spend a day in the train room without soldering something.

Besides, if it is not plugged in, I'll forget where I left it.

If it is not on the regular work bench, then yes it is unplugged., Most of my extension cords die when the master switch is pulled but the outlet on the south wall, and its plugs do not.

LION really is careful with it.

Goooooooood evening,

Well (clear full, toads basking in more temperate temperatures), I found out yesterday what the new hire will be at w**k. THAT Editor and Mr. Boss selected a dude who is about to graduate from the University of Iowa. He's a history major who has written about arts and culture stuff. Huh? He beat-out an apparently very talented gal who also is from the UofI, studying urinalism...I mean, journalism, and wrote for The Daily Iowan (newspaper).

Hands-down, she apparently has the skills and experience (having covered politics, government and education). But, her references sank her. A roommate had little to nothing to say, and her writing coach could only speak about her writing. He/she/it (this IS Iowa City we're talking about...) had no idea about her work ethic, reliability, public presence, professionalism, etc. The dude's references said all the right things. He starts in late May.

In other news and views...

VINCENT: I heard you say you picked up a LifeLike boxcar, the flat roof Evans type. IF you can find one, the Details West Evans cushion underframe is a direct replacement for the LifeLike floor, takes a Kadee No.5 and Athearn (or similar) trucks screw right on. Other than the goofy stirrup steps (easily replaced), it's actually a very good replica of a car the Penn Central had a crap-ton of. I've got three (stripped and repainted) for the PC, a BevBel Conrail version and two of the more recent Proto 1000 offerings in Conrail and Conrail patched PC. I've got them assigned to deliver Nestle products from Ohio to Nash Finch in Cedar Crapids.

Mowing season has started. Grumpy Blackie the Mower is humming right along. I changed her oil, cleaned her air filter, dumped in some gas, primed the ever living bat snot out of her...and she fired-up on the second or third pull!Big Smile I got the bulk of the yard done with no problems encountered, but it looks like I either need to sharpen or replace the blade.

'Lil Red on the other hand has, I fear, a terminal condition. She was running very roughly last fall, sounding like an old 2-cyl. "Johnny Popper." I fired her up and she's burning oil big-time. I went to pull out the air filter, it's soaked in oil. Sad For what it would likely cost in repairs, we could just as easily get a replacement. The yard is big enough it's nice having two mowers, for when the Wife decides to renew her Advanced Mowing Skills certificationMischief. It's also nice having a reserve mower handy if the primary craps-out. Will decide in another paycheck or two.

Have a good evening people!

Soldering Iron of LION comes on when train room power comes on. Is always hot and waiting form me.

Please, please tell me you don't really do that.  It's fine to sing "Nearer My God to Thee," Brother Lion, but don't do things that might actually make that come to pass.

My soldering iron gets turned off and UNPLUGGED when its work is done.

Ooops, I appear to have caught something from Galaxy, huh?  OK, here's the rules:  Good microbrews on tap only, or pie and ice cream.  No lite beer in cans or pop-tarts, OK?  And nothing low-fat, either.

3 To install a decoder, you have to remove the PC board like on my PK 1000 F 3's. That means I have to install LED's and I hate to solder.

What? No 8-pin plug? The one I had years ago had an 8-pin plug in it. It also had all four axle gears cracked.

Soldering is easy. Soldering Iron of LION comes on when train room power comes on. Is always hot and waiting form me.

Must be careful not to burn nice fur or other things, and for pity sake keep the TAIL out of the way. Other than that. Is easy.

LION has been working in the train room all afternoon. Him was soldering and testing relays. About 2/3s of the are connected properly. It take a long time to solder that many connections, and because LIONS are dyslexic and cannot figure out North and South, or Previous and Next, there are mistakes that have to be corrected over and over again.

All the While the trains were running on all four tracks. LION would have to stop what he was doing and go up into the interlocking tower to maneuver trains in and out of 242nd Street. AND we have a lot of visitors here at the Abbey this weekend, and the train room seems to draw them up like a magnet, so LION also was explaining and entertaining. Him should really get some donkey to come up and clean the floor for him, but donkeys cost money, and the LION does not pay very well. It's not like you can let a donkey share a piece of your wildebeest or something. Let them eat grass!

Anyway, much was accomplished sore paws or not.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Pretty much did not get anything done I wanted to, again. Went and paid for the Darn Lawnmower repair! Man it blows to pay $150.00 repair bill so you can do something you hate to do! But, it did start on the first pull while I was at the shop, that something it did not do new! Luckily it is raining again so I have not had to cut the grass today!

I knew I should not go there, but I did. Laugh Went to K-10 Model Trains for a tub of glue and a pack of #5 Kadee couplers. Well I had to look at engines while I was there, right?

I am now a proud (I Think) owner of a PK 2000 GP 30 in B&O colors! Stick out tongue Reason I say I think, I am a proud owner is after I got the engine home I found a few things I don't like.

1 Frame is hot, there is only 1 wire going to each truck. Just reminds me of the ill fated Decoder Eating Athearn RTR SP SD 50.

2 Same open frame Motor of the SD 7 and 9's. But Vince's warned me, but they where the only B&O engines there that I saw. There is a second one, so if I like this one, well? Whistling

3 To install a decoder, you have to remove the PC board like on my PK 1000 F 3's. That means I have to install LED's and I hate to solder.

Dennis, a tab is like the tab on a file folder. Each time you open a different web site, a tab is created along the very top of your browser screen. I currently have MRR Fourms, TCS digital decoder, Weather Network websites tabs showing. Click on any one of them and your browser will go to that page. You have to do a refresh to bring it up to date. That would be a hold the CTRL key down and press the R key.

Yep, tabs are very handy. It's not unusual for me to have ten or more open.

Jim, I even amazed myself with that one. I got stood up one on the first one, but the 2nd one said she was in a bad mood, but kept texting me until I fell asleep.

As Red Auerback of the Boston Celtics used to say, "Let me tell you a story...."

Once upon a time a railfan was walking on the beach in California when he stubbed his toe on what turned out to be an old oil lamp.  He pulled out a handkerchief to clean it off and look for any markings, when lo and behold, a genie appeared.  He explained that he was required to grant one wish, but that 3 wishes was just something out of the storybooks.

"Well," said our railfan, "I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I hate to fly, so how about a railroad bridge from here to Hawaii?"

The genie looked aghast.  "Do you know what you're asking for?  That's, like, impossible!  All the materials, and labor costs, and not to mention the environmental impact statements.  Why, you could be long gone before the first shovel of sand would be turned.  No, try something else."

Well, then," answered the railfan.  "I've always wanted to really, really understand women."

The genie looked at him, looked out at the ocean, and said, "Single track or double-track on that railroad bridge?"

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Afternnon guys

Went to the train club this morning. I ran the train I ran at the open house last week. It ran without a hitch then, but this week it kept derailing and uncoupling. Ugh. Once I get that BN SD40-2 going, I'm going to hook it up to my 2 BLI C30-7s and a coal train. Really would like another BLI C30-7 or Athearn RTD SD40-2s in BN, but without sound.

Curt, I know how you feel, but one year is nothing. I've been waiting 3 for some newer Athearn RTR BN SD40-2s and the Bowser C636. It's been about 3-4 years on the Athearns, and about 2 on the C636. Don't get me started on the BLI S-2 Northern (the GN one), that's been almost 8 years now.

Jim, I even amazed myself with that one. I got stood up one on the first one, but the 2nd one said she was in a bad mood, but kept texting me until I fell asleep.

I may work on getting beacons into my 2 Gp38-2s later today. Maybe I'll even get them into my SD40-2 and C30-7s.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good afternoon.  Just a Dr Pepper, please.  I've got power tool work to do.

I got to the 30% off sale at the hobby shop a few towns away this morning.  I picked up some small WS trees, which I can always use more of, and another couple of box cars (1 RTR, 1 kit) that I already have too many of.  I got some scratchbuilding stuff, too, because this shop has both Evergreen and Plastruct, in addition to shipbuilding stuff that I can use around the carfloat pier.  Unfortunately, they carry balsa wood but not the Northeast Scale Lumber stuff I'd hoped to find.  NESL is actually close by, so if the traffic doesn't look too bad on I-93 north of Boston later this week I'll drop by after work.

OK, off to repair the shed door and get the garden hoses out.

Hey!  It's me at the top.  Set 'em for the crowd.  The shed door is done, I'm already working with my hobby-shop booty and the weather is fine.

Morning (okay, maybe afternoon), Flo, I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich with a pickle spear and a RBF, please 'n' thank you!

Packer

Evening guys

Not too great of a day today. Got let off work early, then got stood up for a date, and now may be stood up for another date. Ugh....

Hey, Packer - two dates on the same day? Wow How do you avoid getting them mixed up (assuming both show up, anyway)?

Jeff, good idea about having both decoders use the same CV for resetting. I can imagine that if they aren't the same, it could get a little hairy to figure which one was causing the trouble. This way, you can just wipe both and re-program them.

And Galaxy missed the TOP again this morning... Thumbs UpSmile Think you're on a good streak this time, G!

Pineapple juice, coffee and Chinese beef? Eeyeeww, Todd! Dead How'd you develop a taste for THAT combination, anyway? Wink

CDN Dennis - I guess everybody might be sleeping in today (or they're too busy with HD lists?).. Oh, on one comment you made in your PM, Missouri has what I would call hills, compared to what you have near you. (REAL mountains...!)Smile, Wink & Grin On my one-and-only vacation trip when I was married, we went by/through some of the Rockies in Colorado - which are a whole 'nuther thing than Missouri's "mountains". Wink

Curt, it sounds like you're feeling like Packer's signature lately. I've considered some of the BLI stuff (through their Factory Direct place), when they have sent me info, the money wasn't available. I think they may have stopped sending me emails, possibly. I think the only stuff I've pre-ordered were some Athearn RTR flatcars (ATSF and Uncle Pete), but that was a while back.

Ulrich, nice layout design there. Not completely sure why, but a lot of NG "little critters" remind me of the Athearn Hustler diesel.. Smile, Wink & Grin I'm sure it's a nice change to not have the weight of wondering what phone call you will be getting next related to your mother. Enjoy the (comparative) peace and quiet. Thumbs Up

This morning, our men's small group from church met for breakfast (fund-raiser for a youth group mission trip) - all you could eat pancakes, sausage, and coffee/milk. So I was about ready for a nap after that... Instead, I went by Hobby Lobby and picked up a couple of colors of paint for the Merchants' Row trim colors, and some small jars (for any mixed colors that I want to save some of for later use).  May start on the trim painting this afternoon (if I don't try to catch a catnap, that is).

I'll be at the RC, digging into my lunch, and then do some sketching for ideas on the trim colors...

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

looks awesome, Ulrich!

Curt, don't worry man I know how you feel. I'm really hoping those intermountain F3's (NP Loewy), and those passenger cars(BN green, BN silver, and SP&S) pull through and are delivered. As well as that Amtrak Dash 8-32BWH that was supposed to be delivered in January.

Good Afternoon!

We had a bad temperature drop yesterday night. It is not really cosy outside. so I spent some time at the ´puter, playing with some old layout ideas of mine.

If it looks familiar to you - well, it is actually is - this time in HOn30. Makes it cheaper, quite a lot cheaper....

No news about my Mom. Is that good news? I try to get a little distance to the ongoing issues, just to keep my sanity.

Y´ all have a good one!

Good morning.

Got that book last night. Started reading it, and so far so good. May have mentioned the title already, but is "A Higher Call", which is about Franz Stigler, a German Ace, and Charlie Brown, a B17 pilot.

Worked hard last night, hence why I hadn't gotten back on.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Route of the Black Diamond Express, John Wilkes and Maple Leaf.
