Good morning. ..... Coffee and donuts, please.
I'm enjoying my 2-10-2 with its new Sountraxx sound. ....Chuff Chuff
Ulrich ..... Prayers for your Dad. The Lord will look out for him. ...... I can't picture a very tall man seated in such a small car.
Galaxy ...... Sounds like you are making wise decisions with you vehicles.
Todd ..... I think your experience with durability of trucks is common. My 2002 truck has never had a mechanical problem. .... (There actually is one exception. I started it when Shelley's cat was under the hood breaking the serpentine belt and messing up the cat. ) .... The truck by the way was a gift from Shelley to me and she paid cash for it in 2002 when it was new. Her car is a 2004 and has had problems with its expensive electronic controls, but mechanically is a great shape. It, too, was bought when it was new. ...... Back to trucks, they are typically o durable, I would prefer buying another if I had to. However, I doubt this truck will ever need replacing.
Ray .... Your split rail fence in WPF is terrific! .... Nice work!
I'm still working on taxes. I'll do more of that this morning, and later get out in the warm Spring weather.
Tonight I'll get back to the layout.
Smile, everybody!

Good Morning!!!

Partly sunny, with a high near………(looks around for Fergie) 70.
Whew! Whata difference a day makes around here. Don’t come in for one day and it takes an hour to see what I missed. It’s nice though.
I was a trumpeter in high school and in the Jazz band too. I was so good, hey, I made Duke Armstrong jealous. Chuck Manchyown would come listen to me. Lotsa fun I had. Graduated in 1980 and don’t think I’ve touched it but once since. I should sell it before the valves lock in place, but…..it’s got sentimental value.
Galaxy- I know this means nothing in the end, especially since you've already decided, but if there is one vehicle that as long as I have been around cars NO one hasreally complained about….it’s the Chrysler/Dodge minivan. Or at least that I've heard. Yes from time to time there have been things wrong with them, but even with those the customer satisfaction is, oddly enough, outstanding. Not that there aren’t others out there people are satisfied with as well, just sayin about those. They generally are a very very good vehicle. Always can get a lemon though of anything. Like you said, if you been in the car repair business for any length of time, you will realize there ain’t a whole lot of difference in the quality or reliability between manufacturers as a whole. Dealerships vary from one to the next. One town the dealer is just as crooked as a dogs hind leg, next town the place is as honest as they come. Dealership has no bearing on the car other than they are the ones you’ll have to deal with, so I guess they do to a point. Each manufacturer has a list as long as your arm of things you could point out as to why you shouldn’t buy their “junk”, but in reality….it’s just a crap shoot at best. Example. My truck before this one. Guy I know had one same year, same motor etc. His went down for you name it. Mine, never saw a repair other than the fuel pump in the 17 years I had it. I figured after 14 almost 15 years, I wouldn’t complain. It did lose it’s transmission as did all but oh say maybe two of those ’94/’95 models. (they figured an “improved and easier to repair” fluid tube looked good on paper, but the o-rings in real world weren’t such a good thing) This happened out of it's warranty, at a bit over 7 years but Chrysler said they would pay for it anyway and…the cost was nothing to me except for about a week without truck. Can’t complain about the dealer or company. This is the same dealer that some one else I know claimed a repair was not warranty and it was AND tried to sell her unnecessary repair. EVERYthing with cars is a gamble. Source:30+ years w**king on the evil monsters. I drive a Dodge…er excuuuuse me, a Ram (still a Dodge. A rose by any other name) NOT because I think it’s any better than say a Ford or Chevy or any other, but like you said. It and the last one I had said…..Buy me. If this one is as good as the last one and so far it’s a go Houston, I shall be very pleased. I shall not tell fo this guy who has a Chevy pickup for the last 20 years and I'm not sure he's even changed the oil in it and it's never seen a repair. Now when I say that I don't mean normal wear and tears.
As for Kia. Buddy of mine had one a few years ago. He too felt it was the biggest hunk of rice on the planet. But, his “fancy” she wanted this one a couple years ago cause well, I guess it just said “buy me” to her. Buddy reluctantly gave in and now he says this one's great. Loves it. Whatcanya say.
Spent most yesterday doin odds and ends and today will be about the same. I should get out in the yard today, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow as the temps are supposed to be about the same. Couple degrees warmer, but a 30% chance of rain. I can see that possibly being useful.
Prayers for Ulrich’s Father.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 49° with 99% humidity. The high will be 75°.The plan for today is to mow the grass. With all the rain we've had lately it's growing by leaps and bounds and will be out of control if it's not cut soon. I don't anticipate getting much else done today.

Well, we have decided, I think, to go for it on the Chrysler T&C. We have thought long and hard on it, though we will be getting rid of IT in 5 years too as they will quit making the parts sometime 10 years into the future too. And as soon as MOH is employed for a year, we will replace the 98 GR Caravan with a new car too, probably small for MOH to run around in. It runs OK and is getting to be a night mare is the rust department, so it should last another year.
For the second car we are looking at the Mazda 2. A nice smaller car for MOH. OR a Mazda 5-it is like a minivan only smaller or a station wagon that's a bit bigger. It will be USED of course.
The original plan was to replace the 98 in 21 months {or is it 20 now I just mailed on out?} when the Kia is paid for and keep the KIA for another 5 years as paid off . We don't really want 2 car payments, but since I have us on an austerity budget now, I think we can keep our belts tightened enough to deal with it with 2 payments and insurance increases.
The dryer works great I was able to make all 7 loads into 4 and the dryer handled the larger washer loads! {the washer is 7 cf capacity and the dryer 6.5cf} we both like the wide open door mouth on the dryer for loading/unloading. {MOH had to try it out even though it is basically MY toy!}. I am pleased with it. For $348 base price it is GREAT. Haier does make some great products.
Today my back is paying for all the work i did yesterday. and I need to go grocery shopping and MOH wants to go too.
well off to shower...
Have a great day.

Good Morning!
Back again! The test went quite well, although there is a little infection which requires attention. The antibiotics I am on will take care of that (and, hopefully, my everlasting sinusitis as well).
Spring still has not found its way to northern Germany. The wind is still blowing icy cold air from the Arctic region, making it very unpleasant to stay any length of time outside - shiver!!!
When Petra went to pick me up at the hospital yesterday afternoon, our car finally drew its terminal breath. It is beyond any repair for economic reasons, the motor control unit finally gave up and a replacement will cost something like $ 2,000, as used parts are not around anymore, due to the government financed wrecking action we had a few years back. Petra had to use my parents´ car to drive to the hospital, but she really hates that one, as it has a semi-automated transmission. Each time that box shifts gears, the car rocks like a mule. The car is up for technical inspection this month, requiring a set of new tires, brake disc and brake pads to pass. That´s also to the tune of $ 2,000! Talked to my Dad about this, and he agreed to sell it and will "sponsor" a new car for Petra and me! Apparently my Mom was not in the room while we were on the phone! He told me it is just a little thank you for all what I have done for them - isn´t that sweet of him? He has always been a generous man - when my Mom was not around!
Now we have to find a suitable set of wheels for us, which is not an easy task. Cars cost a fortune over here and I don´t want to drain my father´s pocket book too much. Petra and I do not do a lot of driving these days, so a small car will do. It´ll have to be cheap in price, tax and insurance, but high in quality. It also needs to be roomy enough to accommodate my 6´5" comfortably, without straining my back. Anything below 50 mpg is out of question in any case, given the ever rising cost of gas here.
I will take a look at a Volkswagen up!, a car which is most likely not marketed in the US. It is the cheapest VW on the market, more of a shopping chart than a real car, but should it seat me, that´s all we need. Tax and insurance amount to about $ 150 a year, which is less than half of what I have to pay now. According to the paper specs, it gets about 60mpg without being a hybrid car.
We will go for the 4-door version, though, as it will be easier to load the groceries onto the back seats.
Have a splendid day!
Hope springs eternal, or so they say. It was such a beautiful day here that I'm hoping that cold weather is finally departing the area for parts unknown. I took advantage and got most of the flower beds cleaned up, the leaves along the garage and the fence raked up, and some trash that acculated under the Rose of Sharon cleaned up. I also found out that I'm out of shape and getting old. Had to come and take a nap after all that.
I had the lawn mower tuned up last week and bought a new blade for too. So I'm ready for that chore when the time comes. Which won't be too long from now from what I saw today. I also noted that the dafodills have a lot of buds on them. Tomorrow I'll see if the roto tiller will start after sitting since last spring. I usually make it a habit to run all my small engines once a month, but somehow forgot about the roto tiller. Maybe I shouldn't have staked so much junk all around it.
Should be a quiet weekend here. Nothing scheduled as far as I know. Well, railfanning on Sunday, but that's a given. Even the wife looks forward to that. Makes it easy for me.
Today I was thinking about my friend and neighbor who passed away a short time ago. We usually sat on his front porch after dinner for a couple of hours when the weather permitted. I'm going to miss that. He really was the last good friend I had. All the others have passed on now. Boy, do I miss them. But, that's life and I've had a really good one considering everything, so I've got nothing to complain about.
Hope everybody has a good wekend.

Work Front, seems I was paranoid for nothing, but still does not mean they are not out to get me. It was slow today, that is till I was alone again! Just like clock work at 6:00 PM I got slammed with STUPID STUFF that did not pay diddle. Made a whole extra $11.06 today.
B&O SD 7, the one I got for free. Just re oiled the motor and giving it more track time, but I don't think it is going to quite down.I can hear it making a wining sound when it is 20 feet away. Only run time will tell. Maybe I should try oiling the U Joints?

Hi Chloe, yep, I'm still hanging around from lunchtime; w**k was kinda slow this afternoon. Hmm, I think I'll have the roast beef special for dinner, and a glass of your Finger Lakes wine, please. I'll pay for mine (G may be taking care of a dentist bill, plus a van payment). Thanks!
OzJim - that sounds great to have a 'local' LHS in your area. I have loved the LHS'es I've visited, including one in St. Louis area - Irish something (which closed a bit back), and there was a nice-sized one in the Memphis area I went to when I was visiting there. It's nice to have a decent number of selections to pick from (and some of the best ones have a bargain bin (good for finding scratchbuilding stuff or scrapyard items...). Ah, a few memories of LHS'es...
Galaxy - (if you haven't already decided by the time I got to reading about your car-buying choice) if it was me in that situation, I'd be thinking hard and long before signing on the dotted line. Oh, and just a little tease - a guaranteed employment after school? I would've loved to have one of those when I finished any of my degrees! Hey, 2nd interview sounds hopeful for YOH on the job. Will add that to my list (AND, that the hours be more often than they at first said)... Yep, I've hear of the tennis balls thing in the dryer - neat trick! Sounds like (no pun intended, well, mostly) the dryer is a keeper and will pull its own weight (for hopefully, as long as/longer than the old one.
Garry - more great layout photos from you! You can keep on posting those ANY day! And see? All you had to do was ask where I was, and my post shows up just a bit below yours...
Fergie, are you on an icebreaker again? Last I recalled, you had been on one of those, then the scientific research(?) ship, and now you're back busting up the 'cubes'? Hmm, I think I need the Cliff Notes to catch up on your career stuff. By the way, (when you get back home), got any photos of the progress on the MESS(tm)?
Jeffrey - your talk about the computers (new, old and the reclamation stuff) reminded me. I had picked up a Mac Mini about a month ago, and had upgraded the internal drive and RAM on it. Unfortunately, in the take-apart and putting it back together, there was one chip (had four straight-line legs that connected it to) on the front of a small sub-board. The legs broke off when I was taking things apart. Turned out that chip/board was part of an infrared for the remote control. The Mini functioned fine without the chip on that board - just not the infrared remote. So today I got in the replacement board I had found (and waited for it to come back in stock...) and ordered once it came in. Didn't cost very much, so tomorrow I'll swap the sub-boards and put the complete one in.
Hey, Jeffrey - I like all the photos around Ezra's place you've been posting. Thanks - looking good!
Tomorrow afternoon is oldest grandson's 5th birthday party (starting with an hour on the bouncy things before the refreshments). Probably a wise choice on my daughter & son-in-law's part, I'd say. Talked with my daughter on the phone this week, and she said grandson's not as much into dinosaurs - it's ninja turtles now (I understand they're coming back into style...). Couldn't find a ninja turtle 5th birhday card, though. - Todd, do you have a card like that, that you could get to me by morning?
Prayers those in need of (continued) healing (including Ulrich and others), comfort, good night's sleep, and jobs/increased hours (where needed). Also for those with procedures, surgeries and therapies pending or underway.

Friday evening and it's been blah, cloudy, cold, damp windy all day. Suppose to sn*w off and on for the next 2 or three days/nights. Hang on to your sn*wshovel Johnboy. It's heading your way in Regina as well according to the weather guessers.
MOH and I seem to have chased down a case of the creeping crud somewhere along the line so it's been kinda sorta quiet around here except for the sneezing blowing and toilet flushing. Sort of goes along with the weather I suppose.
The last couple of days I have managed to make a bunch of rock castings. I've got 5 different molds from WS so I've now got quite a pile of rocks. It goes pretty quick when you remember to make a new set every 1/2 hour or so. Anyway I now have a fair supply for when I need them.
I messed around with some cardboard weaving for scenery back a few days ago and I'm not all that impressed. The hot glue doesn't hold the strips to the painted scenery decider worth a hoot so I don't know. Maybe I'll just go back to my old screen method, at least it's familiar and works for me.
I discovered a new use for leftover plastic chloroplast. I'm using it to line my tunnels after it's been painted black. Lion tells me he uses cardboard for his and that got me to thinking about the plastic stuff so there ya go. Gets more junk out of my shop too.
Jeffrey seems to be kinda busy what with tearing apart old puters and bypassing ignition switches on his van. Hasn't been round much today.
Sure glad I don't run Burlington Northern. Those dern things seem to be really addictive at least to Gary who seems to want to buy every last one of them
Oh right, it's April so that means SUPERTRAIN is on in Calgary It's one of the largest if not the largest Model RR show in Canada. Takes two days to go through and about 1 hr to spend waaaaayyyy toooo much money. Maybe I'll pass this year..... naw couldn't do that. It would make too much sense.

I'm gonna get those BN artic. well cars one way or another, this check will be layout and freight cars. As will the next couple paychecks, but somewhere in there I'm getting Katos new SD40-2's BN.
Packer Karl, On the "Diesel Detailing" thread, what size filler piece did you use under the cab of the chop-nose GP? I modified the cab on my GP5 to be lower, but I think what you did looks better.

Vince, IIRC the piece was .040 thick evergreen styrene. I just added it because thats as far down as the Atlas cab would go on the proto hood!

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Got most of the excess freight cars put away. I left two 50' boxcars on a dead end spur. In other news the ignition relay on my van gave up the ghost this morning. It will no longer trip the starters relay. So I disconnected my starter button wire from the ignition relay and spliced it onto the trip wire for the starters relay. Works like a charm! Press the starter button and power goes from the battery to the starter relay via the starter button. It'll suffice until I get another ignition relay. I went to my fathers place to see if there was a ps2 keyboard connector to USB connector there. Nada! The only one I could find was a USB to ps2 keyboard port. Just the opposite.Be back later.
Evening All,
Had for supper. Flo can I have a cup of coffee please. What?....No I will pay for it.

JimRCGMO Galaxy, about your laundromat (except for the gas to get here), you could bring it to our area. The laundromat where I go runs $1.75/washer load (regular size, they have bigger/$$er ones) but only 25 cents for 20 minutes on the dryers. But as I said, the gas and time to bring it here would kill your budget (or anyone else's), I'm sure.... Hey, has YOH heard back on that job interview yet?

chochowillie galaxyNo decision yet on the T&C. Still deciding. Would like to be without a vehicle payment, but for at least the next 21 months, we would still be the same payment...so whats the diff? My daughter had the same KIA as you have and it was the biggest piece of excrement ever produced. It spent more time at the dealer than on the road. The dealer wiggled around about honoring the warranty every time she had to take it in. She finally just gave up when the front end differential went out of it and donated it to the Liver Foundation. No wonder you want to get rid of you Kia. Dennis

We have KIA, a Rio. I can barely fit in it, but gets really good gas mileage (when I'm not in it).
Good afternoon.
Homework for the weekend (oh joy), but still not feeling bad. Headache, and still feel a little down for an unknown reason. Hope to get the 109's paint on this weekend. Supposed to be nice, so it's a good time to do some airbrushing!
Good Morning, Zoe - in honor of Ulrich returning to us, I'll cover the RBF's today (just have been reading the earlier April posts this morning...). And I'll have the blue plate lunch special for now with that, in a mug, too, please 'n' thank you!
VERY good to hear that you made it through all your procedures, Ulrich! Probably just as well that you didn't recall all of them, too (Sent you a PM as well). Hope that Petra's life has calmed down too now. I'm sure she was on the 'edge of her seat' for about all of that time. Give her a hug from all of us when you get back home from the heart clinic, and do follow the doctors' recommendations for healing up and other follow-up stuff.
Jeffrey, it was good that your Dad helped you out with replacing your 'toasted' 'puter. As you said, it probably had lived way beyond what any of us would expect. Glad to hear you have been able to find some of the "ins" and "outs" of Win8, and you may find other ways to fine-tune the new setup to how you want it to run for you. Silly computer companies keep trying to tell us how we 'ought' to use them. Harrummmph!!
Garry, I think at that restaurant you showed, it gives new meaning to "street running" when one of those 'big boys' (non-steamers) rumbles by ya! Might have to hang onto your cup or glass and plate, so it doesn't skip across your table top.
Looks like our NOTB Diners are about in short sleeve and walking shorts weather up there, eh? Well, maybe next week... Down here in Cape G.-land, we had a smidgen of frost on the car window, but it had melted before I got out to drive to w**k today, and it's supposed to reach mid-60's (F, around 18 C) by this afternoon. Almost spring down here (and soon will be pollen season...).
I see that Todd has survived morning-without-coffee at his place (right? You are still standing, Todd?). I can get through a morning without that black bitter liquid, but I do know a few that you don't talk to (here at the office) unless they've had their first cup. And you have some 'free' time for MRR'ing next week? Cool! En-joy!!
Rob, best wishes with your RR's expansion (and the prep for same). (Now, that should motivate more to get my layout further along, right?)
Good to see you posting, Jerry. And I even see that Fergie was in earlier, and it sounds like the MESS(tm) is expanding, also!
So, did we take up Broadway on his offer of that siding, and are in North Dakota this month? (Or is the answer in the pages I still have to read through?... Guess I'll find out)
CDN Dennis - do remember to mask/tape over your track before you start putting the plaster/whatever strips on the cardboard under structure. Ya don't want to have to get the drippings off of your track after they've dried....
And Ken, why am I NOT surprised at that report about BofA being at the top of the (dubious) heap from the consumer board? Hmm, why would that be...
Ray, good to hear Blackie's feeling better and moving around more. Progress sounds great there.
("Dr.") Fergie, - you didn't bring enough MRR projects to w**k on while you're at sea? Shame on you! How many projects did you bring this time?
I still have a bit of reading to do, but looks like lunch is about ready, so I'll stop for now (and rest your ears....).

Mornin'.... Opps! Ah, afternoon folks.
Zoe just a refill on the dark roast coffee at the moment.
Was about ready to open the diner door this morning when I got an emergency email from the MLK Committee president. A very highly thought of Black Minister here in Geneva passed away very suddenly a few days ago at the age of 79. Turns out there will be two services for him. The first will be at his church tonight, and then a second one will be at my church, the Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning. The committee wanted to send flowers for both services, and guess who is retired and has lots of time to get those type of things done on a moments notice? So I drove downtown and got the flowers ordered and then had to call the funeral home to see if they can transport the flowers from one church to the other and if they can be displayed in both places. They may not be able to use them at one of the services due to family wishes.... I hope to make the service tomorrow for at least a short time as I have to be at the museum in the early afternoon for a training session.
Barry, thanks for the nice weather again today! I think I'll go down cellar and watch the meter spin for a while... Actually I have to finish the laundry. 8 string Bass??? Gotta think about that. I have seen 5 string Basses. 8 string Bass? I have played a 12 string guitar, but never heard of an 8 string guitar. Don't have enough fingers to get around that one...
Fergie, I did see the comment, but didn't want to, ah, start anything... LOL Good to have you back on board!
I have also been answering emails about the sound system out at camp. The guy from the Rotary Club wants me to order the new speakers, but I have no "Proper Authority" (railroad rule) to do that until I am told to do so by the camp ranger or someone else with "Proper Authority"...
Best get myself away from the computer and get some other stuff done!
