Using this one piece of unscientific data as my basis, and assuming that there are 200,000 subscribers to MR magazine, my estimate of model railroaders is somewhere around 3, 333,333.

Actually, we do know the subscription count since magazines are required to report that and the reports are printed once a year in the magazine. Subscriptions reported in Jan 2013 MR are 101,324 avg last 12 months and 99,618 issue nearest filing date.
