Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Hi Gang,
Zoe, you got the late shift tonight ! Please draw me a H.C. and a couple of oatmeal cookies before decide to hit the sack.
Hhhmmm not many left in the Diner tonight. Duke, you have to go home sometime. Would be a nice night for a ride on that Bike of yours, especially that we are here in Hawaii..
Rob, you might as well stay here as you don't get much sleep anyway. How about a night watchman's job ?? if not maybe we could get Jeremy to do it.
Well, my Great White Candy Mountain is not white anymore. It has taken most of the day but, all fourteen feet of it finally got a coat of Gypsolite and I must say it looks a lot better. But now it will have to be detailed some. It has been standing in all white for a year and a half. If that had been Curt, he would have had it finished a year ago last Christmas. We should name him "Speedy" Don't know what name I should get...
I'm keeping all you guys and families in our prayers. There seems to be lots of troubles out there.
My Father, may he continue to rest in peace, always used to say "it's the troubles that let you know you are still alive. If it was peaceful and serene you would already be in Heaven". He should know, as he had quite a few troubles himself.
We have had three great days here lately and it is sure a treat from what December and January gave us. But we never get too complacent as winter won't end here for a couple of months yet.. I do really feel for you all in the path and wake of those eastern storms. The Boston tea Party has a lot of cream in their cups tonight. If it goes quick I would think there will be quite a bit of flooding. That is going to be an issue here as well. It's been a long time since I've seen the amount of snow we have this year. I am really running out of places to put it. Most of the yard now is 5 to 6 feet high with it as of now.
I guess I am just rambling now and I've eaten my cookies, so I will just say "night all" and pull the covers up over my head to keep the dogs from licking it.
Catch ya on the flip side.

Been a fairly productive day here. After all the sn*w removal earlier I made my way down to the train rooms and did some more cleaning (washed the coal loads on my coal drag) and did more on the new scenery.
Duke, nice ride! Glad we woke you up....
Ken, sounds like early "What's his Name's" disease to me.
I have lots of model projects I want to get done, but the supplies have been out of stock for months for some, and I have no extra $$$ at the moment to buy stuff needed for some other projects. I guess I have enough things i can do to keep me busy for a while though. As soon as the weather clears up a bit I need to go get some photos and some measurements of a RR overpass over near Phelps. NY. It is one where the road is one lane going under the RR tracks and would be perfect to build in the area I am putting together now. Might even qualify as one of the structures I need for the Certificate....
I didn't mention that when I went to the dentist the other day he presented me with a list of work that needs to be done... Like $3,000 worth of work that needs to get done. Most I was aware of from my old dentist but have been putting off for a while, like the two teeth needing crowns... I have one filling that has fallen out and that one will get fixed in a little over a week, but there are two others I have been hoping would wait for a while too. I can feel the cracked fillings in one of the teeth that needs a crown and in one that needs filling. There goes any extra hobby money for 2013! Worst case scenario I just have to take money from the revolving house loan. I can still use it up to mid July, so I guess I will just go ahead and schedule to work.
Time for me to head out! Prayers for all in need!

Evening All,
Back from the club. The conveyor came in today so I will build that tomorrow. I borrowed the club Y6B and ran it tonight on my layout. Now all I need is $400-500 dollars for my own. Don't see that happening any time soon.
Rob- I have the DCS-51. I keep 14 sound locomotives and 3 non-sound locos along with the TT. All my locos are kept on the layout and I normally run 2 trains at a time. My only complaint is that it is loud. I am thinking about putting in a switch to kill power to the TT area when not in use to cut out 90% of the noise.
Hope everybody has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Well I latched onto two 70's era Atlas FP7's today (UP and BN). The owner says they're in good condition and both run. I'll find out when they arrive here in a couple of weeks. Didn't do much on the layout today but I did get my cell phone and video camera recharged and the F unit trio of Frankenlocos were run for several laps around the layout. I also took photos of some rolling stock that may be used in a potential trade. So at least I got something done.Well it's that time again and I have to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Rob
It all depends on the size of the locomotives, how many lights each one has, if each has a sound decoder...............
It all depends on your applications.
Anyway, getting late. I should head up right now. Snow fell lightly and steadily all day long except for this evening when it stopped entirely. Good night.

Todd JR was a very gracious host that day on top of being a great person and here is a pic of the bike I have now,but it is the same as the one I had at that time with minor differences as well as it being red. This one is more of a burgundy even if it doesn’t look like it in the pic.

A man was walking on the beach in California, when he stubbed his toe on what turned out to be an old oil lamp. Of course, he was just a bit superstitious, so he rubbed the lamp. This story wouldn't be much if a Genie hadn't appeared, so let's just say one did. "One wish!" said the Genie. "One wish. Not 3. Never was 3, so get that straight right now." "Well, OK," said our hero. He thought for a moment, and then said, "I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I don't like to fly, and it's too far to drive, so I'd like a railroad bridge from here to Hawaii." The Genie looked at him skeptically. "Do you know how impossible that is? Steel is like a ridiculous amount a ton, and getting a grade level in the ocean, with those tides? And just think of the ballast! No, I can't do that. Try something else." "Well, then, one thing I've always wanted to do is really, truly understand women. Can you do that for me?" The Genie looked at him, shrugged and said "Do want the mainline to be single track or double track?"

Well for a short W#@K Day it sure seemed long! While I made a fair bit of commission, around $80.00 it seems here of late I cannot do anything right! All small stupid stuff, that is what bothers me the most!
Cases in point. I was taking a bag that has the work order and key to be put in the inbox for work to be done. While I was taking the bag out to the shop, I asked Tyler (manager) how to tell if a car is a California Emission Car? Told me to follow him and took me to the car in question. Plague need to be clean and I laid the bag with the work order down on the motor (not the same car) and cleaned clean the plague. We talked about the information then we got busy again. Want to guess where I left the bag? Yep, on the engine of the car we where looking at, not in the in box for work to be done!
Simple and easy mistake, but was not got for well over a hour! Only reason we (Tyler) found out was the lady was P O and start yelling so to speak.
Yes a simple and easy mistake, but I use to be the person that caught and correct mistakes before they happened, not make them! Getting old sucks, honestly I uses to be sharp! But uses to be no longer count does it.
Hating life.

Galaxy, interesting history...
Rob, hope the cough goes away soon. Not fun to lay in bed and cough all night...
I spent much of the afternoon cleaning off as much snow as I could from the Solar panels on the roof. They had 10 or so inches on then just like everything else here. They didn't even start up today so I got 0 Kwh... They are calling for sunshine tomorrow all day (I hope they are right!) so today's cleaning plus the sun should melt off what is left fairly quickly. I got a dozen panels basically cleaned off, still 6 covered with the heavy frozen white stuff. Tomorrow morning I will get a bit more done to give them a boost.
Going to get cold tonight here. Will get into the single digits, but tomorrow we should see temps climb into the low 30's.
Catch you all later!

Well, IN Hawaii, on the Island of Oahu, for the city of Honolulu, after a 40 year battle, they were talking of building a modern train to get around town...here is the article from the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/04/us/hawaii-train-line-is-likely-to-rise-on-oahu.html?_r=1&
We shall see...
Meanwhile, On the Big Island {Hawaii's namesake}:
The Hawaii Consolidated Railway (HCR), originally named the Hilo Railway, was a standard guage common carrier railroad that served much of the east coast of the Island Of Hawai'i (The Big Island) until an important section of the line was destroyed by atsunami on April 1, 1946.
Although not the first railway on the Big Island, the Hilo Railroad was the most ambitious, and through time gained the dubious worldwide distinction of being one of the most expensive railways ever built. It began when B.F. Dillingham, an agricultural entrepreneur from Honolulu, financed the laying of tracks between the port of Hilo and Ola'a (now Kea'au), to service his Ola'a Sugar Mill. Extensions were soon built to Pahoa, where the Pahoa Lumber Company was manufacturing ohia and koa railroad ties for export to the Santa Fe Railroad.
Between 1909 and 1913, the Hamakua Division of the railroad was constructed to service the sugar mills north of Hilo. Because of the rugged nature of the Hamakua Coast, the railway had to cross hundreds of streams and valleys. Dozens of steel trestles rose over 150 feet above the streams underneath them. Over 3,100 feet of tunnels were constructed, one of which, the Maulua Tunnel, was over half a mile in length. At three enormous gulches, a combination of tunnels and distinctive curved trestles enabled the trains to negotiate the daunting topography. Unfortunately, the cost of building the Hamakua extension essentially destroyed the Hilo Railroad, which was sold to bondholders in 1916, and reorganized as the Hawaii Consolidated Railway.
Targeting tourists to augment local passenger and raw sugar transport, the Hawai'i Consolidated Railway ran sight seeing specials under the name "Scenic Express." Passengers were treated to spectacular views of the rugged Hamakua Coast, pounding surf, massive cliffs, plunging waterfalls, and wild and tangled tropical vegetation. Not for the faint of heart, these trips included a stop on the trestles, where passengers disembarked to admire the outstanding scenery. Back in the train, they enjoyed carpet, wicker furniture, and a menu including consommé en tasse, tongue, fresh fruit and pot roast.
The Great Depression saw a decrease in business, but business picked up in the 1940s, when thousands of battle-weary troops packed the passenger cars en route to Camp Tarawa, in Waimea, to rest, recuperate and prepare for another campaign. Oldtimers recall Marines passing meal rations through the train windows into the hands of local children, who eagerly exchanged guavas and mangoes for the G.I. treats. War-time gas rationing also increased passenger numbers.
But the end was near for the Hawai'i Consolidated Railway. Early in the morning of April 1, 1946, a massive tsunami struck Hawai'i. A tragic loss of life occurred in several low-lying areas of the island chain, the east side of Hawaii island were hit the worst. The railroad line between Hilo and Pa'auilo suffered massive damage; bridges collapsed, trestles tumbled, and one engine was literally swept off the tracks.
A few remnants of the railway are still visible along the coast. In Laupahoehoe, a concrete platform remains where Hula dancers once performed for tourists. And the Laupahoehoe Train Museum is housed in the former home of Mr. Stanley, the superintendent of maintenance.

Worst night of uncontrollable coughing yet. Really bad, to the point I started to wonder how it would end. Finally subsided enough to sleep around 4:00am, so each time I woke up after that I laid there in bed quietly and allowed my body to go back to sleep. Feel almost beat up this morning with sore muscles and back, and still have a headache from it. Have no idea how I will manage a dentist chair on a early morning next week. Ugh!

The storm is over here in the Finger Lakes. It is a winter wonderland out there at the moment. Snow is heavy and wet and has stuck to everything. Trees are still covered. I'll try to get a few more photos today, but first I need to get the put,put fired up and burn some petroleum... Currently 18°F out there so the snow is most likely started to freeze up solid. need to get it done ASAP.
Glad that most of the folks in the path of the storm have checked in and are OK. Streets here in Geneva are clear and have had piles of salt put down... There is a pile a few inches deep at the end of the street I live on right in front of my house... Don't think much snow is going to last there!
GMTRacingThere is no truth to the rumor Duke smuggled bedding into his booth back there.

Ow, just got back from shoveling snow at the high school. Very tired right now.
Good Morning All,
S**w has stopped, wind has not. We are still getting heavy gusting to white out conditions. Probably about 18" total though it is impossible to tell with all the drifts. CFO and I were out earlier with s**wblower and shovel to clear the walks and drive. So glad we don't live on a corner as I used to. Hope the rest of you are ok. With a statewide driving ban in effect, no shop time today so on to my HD lists. Catch U Later, J.R
Yes that is in fact Duke with me at Grattan Raceway a few years ago, We had a nice visit and Duke brought his big as all outdoors motorcycle. There is no truth to the rumor Duke smuggled bedding into his booth back there.
Waiting for the wind to die down so I can go out and clear the cars off again.
Good Morning!!!
(snubs Tom and Charlie as I pass. Only to stop, turn towards Tom slightly and mutter…. Ziva has fallen to 2nd place hurrrumph!)
Coffee and an order of Biscuits and Gravy please. Oh and could you toss acouple scrambled eggs on top? Thanks.
Barry- Gee whiz!!! You take care of yourself now ya here? Brenda’s Mom dealt with that, we called her the Lasics(sp?) baby. Actually I’ve seen it spelled and though I can’t remember how, I do know it’s nothing like I spelled it there……Laysiks? Aacchhh, it’s medicine. I think they spell it hard to make you feel like you’re getting more for your money.
Tom- Glad to her the wife is doing well.
I thought I heard someone say the Bachmann forums closed up. Or was that the Atlas? Shows you how much time I spend elsewhere.
Is that Duke with J.R.?
Rob- I got caught with that motor thing on my generator as well. Generac. The thing wasn’t bad priced at all and considering it had a Honda motor…er, excuse me…engine, I thought, you know what? Old unreliable when you really need it is getting replaced. Weeeell it looooked like a Honda engine. No, it wasn’t red, but boy it looked like one and I never gave the color or lack of the name Honda a second thought. Until, it wouldn’t start because the kill switch broke. THAT’s when I found out about the cheapo Chinese Honda look alike motors (shakes head). Fortunately, most parts that fail, can be replaced by Honda parts and make the thing more reliable as time and parts fail. Comforting isn’t it? Yah, that’s what I said. He laughed and said the bright side is the generator is good and a Honda will bolt up juuuuuust fine when that one dies. So I got THAT goin for me. I just mix a little hoison and hot sauce with the gas and hey, 5 years and counting….so far so good with chopsticks and fingers crossed.
Had no reason to go into town yesterday, and couldn’t quite bring myself to make the trip just for a hot dog and tater tots. Even if it was a foot long and chili covered. But today, I must get done aaaalll the stuff I need/want to get done this weekend. Why? Well because Sunday, SUNday, SUNDAY!.....there’s an NCIS marathon on and guess what….it’s a Ziva marathon. Actually a “TIVA” marathon, but close enough. I like Tony too, I think he’s funny, though sometimes a bit far. And I do, like many, point out the innuendos, the little glances, facial expressions and certain comments they make (courtesy the writers and actors of course) to and about each other to “determine” if they like each other more than just partners and friends like they are real people. Brenda just chuckles and I say “I know it’s a show. Fake and made up. Not like Pro Wrestling. The writers and actors do it on purpose. They know what the fans are saying so they play off it. But, let’s just say for a moment…. it wasn’t. I think Ziva would KILL anybody who seriously tries to take her precious Tony. And of course…., we’ve seen what Tony will do for his little Zeevy Weevy.” She laughs and says “oh yaaaah.”
Odd I can talk about Ziva all the time and that’s ok. But just once let a little ole Chinese waitress run up and stop me from leaving the restaurant so she can wipe a little sauce from my face, and suddenly she’s all snippy. Don’t get it…..I just don’t get it.

Greetings from Maine, where the snow is falling horizontally. We had already planned to ski this weekend, so we pushed our departure up a few hours and got here mostly ahead of the storm. We skied in the storm yesterday, but we've delayed going out this morning (now Saturday) because it's very windy and most of the lifts are closed. There are a couple of feet of snow on the ground in most of coastal New England. The wind at Boston's Logan Airport hit 98 mph. According to the power failure map, our little town of Bedford, MA, has no one without power. Still, being up here skiing is the best situation. We have a guy who comes over and plows us out, so he'll earn his money this weekend.
Silly stuff on the TV: Amid the scroll of cancellations on the bottom of the screen on the news out of Portland, Maine, was one entry, "Polar Bear Dip, 3 PM." Of all the things not to cancel. And, one enterprising roofing guy bought ad time to remind the public that his company is available to shovel snow off your roof.
Good morning. It's 43° with 100% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a high of 68°.My plan today is to get more vacuuming done on the layout. For this reason I got the Shop-Vac detail vacuum brushes out so I can get into those small areas where the regular Shop-Vac brushes just can't get to. Yeah it's slow going with those but it's easier than teasing out the dust with a small paint brush. Hopefully I'll have half the layout done today.
Well
today is Saturday - Po ‘aono (poh ah-o-no)
we got about 6-8 " of snow, so not so bad I guess, but a pain to us.
MOH is out shovelling as I just can't do it now, not with the injections due Tuesday!
It was blowing winds to 45 MPH last night,
Even at 3:30 AM HST {Hawaii Standard TIme} it is a "cool" 62F or 17C. nice sleeping weather. But the natives and transplants will tell you that it is "COLD" to them! We met an Ohioan transplant when we checked into the condo I won off PBS auction for 4 nights for cheap. SHe told us "when it falls below 70F I get real cold real fast!" We laughed. Then she told us about being from OHIO originally and how now 70F is too cold to her now. We were happy to be out of snow and 20F weather!
Here is an interesting item that appeared a few days ago about a cross-country train trip:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ethan-klapper/cross-country-amtrak-trip_b_2585039.html
We could now maybe go that way to Hawaii next time! {can't afford it now} we'd be lucky to ever get back to Hawaii.
I will post more aobut Hawaii's railroads tomorrow!
Stay safe, warm and shovel carefully out from snow if you got it!
LATER EDIT: looks like I got top! SO, Daisy, Macadamia nut muffins with pineapple marmalade on top and KONA coffee for everyone!!!
kbkchoochJeffrey. Big difference on the ballfield! Good luck on the rest of the layout. I have to do the same chore to the modules from time to time. Usually I vacuum them with my shop vac, with a soft brush attachment that is meant for cleaning computers. Its also vented, so the suction isnt too great. Then I spray it down with a plant sprayer full of water on a very fine mist. Works great for knocking the dust out of the trees, then it just dissipates into the ground cover.
