Hockey Lockout helps save Model Railroad Industry!
Posted by BATMAN on Friday, January 4, 2013 7:09 PM

I just realized how much I've been getting done in the trainroom lately. It suddenly dawned on me that it is because of the NHL lockout. We are huge Canuck fans and go to lots of games, but by the time we drive into Vancouver, watch the game and drive home we are talking about six plus hours a trip. Do that a couple of times a week and one uses up a lot of train time. Even watching games on the TV can eat up a good ten to twelve hours a week.

In addition, and here's the kicker. I've figured I have spent over a $1000.00 on train stuff since October. I don't think I've spent that much on train stuff in the previous three years combined! So the Hockey strike has certainly helped the MRR industry at least as far as my teeny tiny contribution is concerned.

I do miss the quality time with the kids at the games though.

There is a NHL lockout?

In another life, with another wife, many years ago, I followed hockey and baseball, but these days sports is completely off my radar.

Sucks there is still no NHL.

As a Ducks fan I'm afraid we're losing Teemu's last year.

At least the US is doing great at the World Junior Championships.

Yeah, I hear ya.  I live in HOCKEYTOWN (Detroit).  The lockout sucks, but it does free up a few nights a week with them not playing.  I'm not hopefull for any sort of a season now.

Some people think it is what makes America great.  If you don't have so much money that you need to hire people to help you count it you aren't "successful".

Been watching far superior hockey with the juniors, what a difference from the goon hockey millionaires, does anyone really care if they go back or not, now is the time to bring back real hockey by supporting junior and peewee hockey.

I would guesstimate that the percentage of model railroaders who are also NHL fans is less than 1/1000%, so the NHL is going to have an extremely minimal impact on the model railroad industry..

Exactly, and that goes for all "professional" sports. I have better things to do.

Maybe no NHL but I am loving hockey even more watching my grandson of the Salem Saints, pee-wee team. 2 years running and they are 23 & 0.Not bad for the 10 year old's.

NHL: the professional sports league that decides not to play every third season or so....

Now, if there were somehow a college basketball lockout, I'd be lying in a corner curled up in the fetal position!

Sitting at the workdesk tinkering on my latest model railroad project, with a Big Ten ballgame playing on the tv. Yep, hard to beat that.

I live in washington but my favorite team is the sharks, I may not watch as much as my dad who watches football and hockey almost exclusively I do enjoy it when I watch though. besides SJ was my only pro sport team that seems to want to win anything.

This explains the odd custom of throwing a live octopus on the host's layout during tours.

To all the NHL/hockey deprived, my sympathies

For some reason, gymnastics in all iterations seems to have vanished from the ken of TV sports departments.

OTOH, I get my Sumo fix for fifteen days every two months.  I just wish it wasn't broadcast live.  1600 in Tokyo is 0 dark midnight here in the Pacific time zone.

Dave and chuck your responses made me laugh I tip my SJ sharks hat with a BN pin in it to both of you! At the moment though I'm watching Godzilla. Big Smile now to find a scale model to include for my layout!

While I miss watching my NJ Devils, It was fun to follow Team USA's Gold Medal win over Sweden in the World Juniors. Occasionally, someone carries a live NCAA Hockey game, also worth watching.

There is a definite correlation, between the lack of nightly NHL games, and my completing my track work.

Cable's 200 channels of reruns (50 in other languages) just don't work for me.

Let's give the hornet's nest a good swift kick...

Lockout's over? Bully for them. I don't care. I'm living proof that hockey is not, in fact, embedded in Canadian DNA; whatever it is that draws people to the game, I don't get it and don't wish to.

If you enjoy it, more power to you. You can have my share.

No, Not seriously. It was meant to be very "tongue in cheek".
The increase in my time spent in the trainroom along with the increase in my spending on train stuff is a result of no Hockey though. There is no doubt in my mind about that.
As far as the Capt. and I. Well I never started drinking until I was thirty and to this day a glass of good wine with dinner is about it for me.BeerSmile, Wink & Grin

Just to clarify things not all Canadians are hockey fans, sure they may watch the odd game, but fanatics- -there are a few, The Stadium where ther maple leaves play(thats the correct spelling) holds 18,000 fans--the city has a population of 2,615,000, doesn't sound like a bunch of hockey fanatics to me, Now the Brits play soccer (football) and they have 3 stadiums in London one holds 90,000 another 82,000 and another holds 80,000.  There are a lot of non-professional teams and lots of kids play, playing seems to be preferable to watching, then they get over it when older. Remember the NHL is a Corporation and the word sport is seldom if ever used when it comes to the bottom line, it's a business.
