Just a quickupdate - looks like most of the nastiest weather has passed by our area. Storm sirens went off twice (or maybe the second one was an all-clear?), and power flickered once/twice, and went off briefly at one point. Have reset the clock on the microwave (alarm clock is battery-backed up, so it wasn't off long enough to mess with it).
Garry, watch yourself there as this one comes through your area (may be going through Jeff's area about now). And Inch, Jerry and Todd, watch out in your area. Lee, Rob and others further east, maybe it will wear itself out before it reaches your areas.
I'm gonna go head for bed now.

According to the weather prognosticators, tomorrow in the Finger Lakes will be wet, mid 54°F high, and high winds.... May get some tree damage as a result of lots of rain and the wind. Nothing as bad as many of you have been facing (I hope!). I do worry about a couple of old and very large pine trees in the neighborhood that, if they came down, would do serious damage to homes and property.
Blackie the cat doesn't seem to be any worse than he was, but no better either, so tomorrow I will call and make an appt. for him at the Vets. Sure hope there is nothing really seriously wrong with the little guy... I have grown very attached to him...
I actually got to spend a couple hours doing some tedious model railroading. I was putting rivets on some steelwork for under the water tank. Want to count them?

Still have a lot of stuff to do on it, but it sure felt good to have some time to just sit and work on something down there. First time I have spent much time there since before Christmas.

With the layout, I am working on some scenery. Also, the 2-6-6-2 has been adjusted some more and is now running smoothly. The 4-8-2 now has its decoder installed and runs well.

Looks like we've got storms coming across east Texas and it's already windy here. In fact it's been windy most of the day. It's been running from 10 to about 35 mph. The local weather guesser says 90 to 100% chance of rain then likely fair weather through to Monday night. We'll see. Since when can the weather man predict the weather much less the future.I have a new project in mind. I've been tossing around an idea to put an SW1200 cab on a large geep, say something like a GP40 and do a few other things to it.Expecting relatives to arrive from out of state tomorrow for the memorial Friday.Well, time to call it a night and hope for the best with the weather. Ken, the others have chipped in about the 'fun' of commission sales (in your or other lines of business). Back when I was w**king at Sears (paint & hardware), the salespeople in appliances tended to have complaints about others in their department trying to take their sales from them. They even had a book in which they wrote down each customer (the first time the customer came in and they saw them), which I suppose was to settle arguments about who was stealing whose sales. That other car place that was mentioned (with the one big commission pot from which everyone shared) sounds like a much better approach - better incentive to just serve the customers, to the benefit of both the customer and the sales force. (Okay, I think the soapbox is creeping my way, so I'll stop now...).
JR, I'd agree - sounds like your best times were before you got ready to leave there. Sounds like an awesome train ride.
Our area is under a tornado watch until - depending on which version you listen to - midnight or 1 a.m. for the area locally. Possibility of tornadoes, straight-line winds, maybe some flooding (as a squall front comes through). The projected track looks like about 5 degrees east of due north for the alignment of the front, as it tracks in an easterly direction. So yay-hoo, buckeroos! Might want to find a good hunkerin'-down place for beddie-bye time...
I'll check back in the morning (unless internet around here gets taken down, which hopefully it won't...).

Evening All,
I want to thank everyone for the kind words, condolences, and prayers for my Grandmother and family. My Mom. Dad and I drove up last Friday and got caught at Dunn NC by sleet which ended the driving to Boardman OH that day. On Saturday the first 50 miles north was pretty bad but after that the drive was fine. The funeral was Monday and we started back home today. I am typing this in a motel room in Blackwood SC (just north of Columbia). We will be home tomorrow.

Interview went well.
I have been smelling gas around my gas meter every now and then whenever I have the furnace running or the hot water heater. I called the gas company and there sending somebody out tomorrow. They said it could be a small leak around the regulator. I had this problem a couple years ago and they said there was nothing wrong with it so hopefully it will be the same this time. They didn't seem too overly concerned.
The small lake in the front yard is still about four feet from the house, I had to scoop some water out today with a snow shovel. Still alot of rain coming too. So in between another job interview and the gas company coming I might have to shovel more water. It probably wouldnt be a problem but Im not a fan of standing water so close to the house.

Got the bathroom tile laid today and more drywall hung. Owner called this a.m. to let me know they're coming up from Iowa next week. Puts a " hurry-up" on getting the bathroom finished so they can use it. They are real nice people so no biggie.

Last night I got a trio of F-unit plows. I needed 2, so number 3 would be a test bed for how to mount them to the stewarts. I cut the pilot off of the F9 I got from Jeff first as this was the unit that needed the most help (read: a guinea pig for doing stuff, but can be salvaged). I tried a razor saw and a file, but it was slow going, but then I noticed that I had cut a little into the front area of the frame (where the ribs are) but I think it's fixable. I wanted something faster and neater, then I looked at my flush cutter from lowes. That made quick and neat work of the next unit I did. I barely had to file anything. The plows still wouldn't go on, and it looks like I'll have to sand, mill, or grind the inside of the shell to get the pilots to fit right with the shell; or grind some of the alignment area of the plow to get it to fit... Then there is the matter of the frame and it may have to be modified as well.
But as I was planning all this out, I realized something. These are the WRONG plows. The plows I have are for SP/WP units, and not the ones for GN/NP units. Oops.... Back to the drawing board I guess.

I'd post more, but I have to go look at tires for my car. I'm borrowing my brother's spares while he's in Ohio because mine are worn out. Try finding tires for 17x9 wheels...

I went to do the DSS thing and got the necessary papers for food stamps. with MOH having been fired, it should be a shoe-in now to get them, I hope. probably still won't be much.
We are so broke we can't afford the "P" in "poor" anymore...let alone afford the "O", and the other "O" adn the "R"!
If we can tide over til MOH gets another job, or the review of termination events falls to MOH's favor and gets the job back, we won't know. Of course, "under review" can mean a delay in the unemployment, as the company can contest it based on the "review", or that MOH borke the rules and deserved to be fired thrugh no fault of theirs. HA. MOH was pressured by supervisor to punch back in form lunch and so did so a1 minute to early,,for the 3rd time in a year. The pressured part has to stand for MOH to get reinstated.
We shall see what we shall see when we shall see it...

It is a lovely day here in the Finger Lakes! 42°F and pour rain or as the weather people call it "light" rain. I just looked out on the back porch to see water overflowing the eave trough and knowing the the downspout must be [plugged, I climbed up on a round of wood and poked it wit a stick and got it unplugged and got a bit damp at the same time. Wood stove is lit!
Ulrich, I can remember all too well the "fun" of caring for aging parents back a few years ago. My Mom was terrified to go into "assisted living" after my Father died. Then she was terrified when the money was running out and we were trying to get her into a nursing home, then she was terrified after she broke her hip and thought she might die..... The sad part was she spent the last 35 years of her life being terrified rather than enjoying her last days. I would bet your Mother is just terrified of the change... My prayers! Stay strong, they are lucky to have you!

One of my train orders arrived yesterday. Wow, those Union Pacific (HO) passenger cars are HUGE compared to (N) scale. Going to have to do some serious figuring on the new layout to make room for those cars. At least they are easy to see! Think I'll run the track cleaning car today while I rest and contemplate.

Afternoon guys.
What a messy day out here. All that snow is now melting with warm temps and huge downpours. Problem is that the ground is still frozen solid so I have a small pond sitting on my front lawn, its ankle deep and still about 6 feet from the house so I went out with a snowshovel and bailed most of the water into the street storm water sewer basin. My backyard also has a huge puddle at the back of my property ( by my shed ) too bad it didn't freeze I could have a small skating rink,lol
I have a job interview today at 4:30 and another tomorrow at 4pm, I hope when I get home today I dont have to bail more water . Like I was saying its not really close to the house, but close enough for me.
Sir MadogI will have to find a place, where the two can be together, sell the house, sell the car, dispose of their belongings - well, you all know what is ahead of me. I just hope the two will have some more time to enjoy together. I am pretty aware that I cannot count that time in years, but in months or even weeks. Both have been going down rapidly in the last two weeks.
Ulrich: There comes a time when what has to be done has to be done. Your parents are in need of care they can't provide to each other and taking care of elderly parents is a difficult and demanding job you don't need with your health. I know what you're going through as I've been there. When my mother got too bad to be cared for at home we had to move her to a nursing home. It was difficult to convince her that it had to be done but in the end it was the right thing to do. My father checked on her nearly every day. Most of the time she didn't know he was there. I looked in on her from time to time. It wasn't difficult to see that the end was near. When it came it was quick. My father was with her at the time. I was first on his call list. It was my job to notify the rest of the family. It's never easy.

just forget what I wrote an hour ago. I just called my father and the world has changed again. My mother again refuses to go into that really nice place.
Tomorrow, I will have to cancel all the arrangements I have made. I doubt that I will be doing this again. My parents are beyond any help.
I am really sad having to write this.

Been there, done that, and have the gray hairs to prove it! Oh what a blessing it is when the "knot" gets untied, and you can get things to move forward.
We move my parents into a facility, then after Dad passed, Mother wanted to move back home, even though she could not recall the address. Just keep at it, don't give up, it will get easier. If you need to vent, we're all ears!

I know I have not been really communicative these last days. There were just to many things eating me up. I have spend hours on the phone trying to make arrangements for my parents, talking to their doc, talking to the hospital people, trying to find a place for my mom to stay during the time my fathers is in the hospital. Today, I was able to untie the Gordian knot. My mother finally has agreed to move into a nursing facility, close to my father. Best of all, I found a place for her. Coming Friday, I will take her there. This will give me some time to breathe and start on the arrangements for the time when my dad will get out of the hospital. It will be most unlikely for them to return into their house, which has been home to them for the last 20 years. I will have to find a place, where the two can be together, sell the house, sell the car, dispose of their belongings - well, you all know what is ahead of me. I just hope the two will have some more time to enjoy together. I am pretty aware that I cannot count that time in years, but in months or even weeks. Both have been going down rapidly in the last two weeks.
I wish my brother would support me just a little, but he just does not care at all.
It´ll be some more time until I can get my mind back on model railroading. All of my projects are on hold now. I do have the time right now, but I cannot get my mind set on it.
It feels good to know that there are friends around here!

Little scary this morning. Doc changed my meds a bit. Wife checked my sugar when I woke up. 130, not great, but better than the 150-180 it had been in the a.m. Took my pills, took a shower and suddenly I got weak and was sweating profusely. Bad enough I went out to the garage in just my jeans and a wifebeater and had water just running off of me! Wife rechecked my sugar level, down to 60! 4 oz glass of A&W rootbeer, and I felt better, blood sugar rechecked, now 110.
Doc did say to take it with food, I see why now!

Ken, now do you understand why I have given up on the car business? They can't get it though their thick heads! Individual commissions base on sales foster more animosity than competition. When everyone is nipping at everyone's heels, eventually someone gets hurt. Not to mention the poor customers. Especially the one who fall victim to the unscrupulous sales guy. I used to work at a dealer who put it all in 1 pile, and divided it up between us. The employees and the customers were much happier. Sadly, they sold the dealership to corporate America.

What was that Zoe? Oh. Well I don’t follow the what is “breakfast food” thing. I eat pretty much whatever is there and strikes my fancy. Could be bologna sandwich and chips, heated up leftovers from last night supper, even make nachos from time to time. May stem from my old cold pizza for breakfast days. Don't like cold pizza now, and I really didn't care for it then either come to think of it. Most often I do eat “breakfast food” for breakfast though, but it isn’t unusual for me to go to say the Huddle House (almost identical to a Waffle House for those not familiar) and order chicken fried steak dinner or burger and fries at 7:00 in the morning. I also eat “breakfast” for lunch or supper from time to time too. I don't actually cook regular food I guess you'd call it, for breakfast, more like just nuke leftovers or make sandwiches etc. I will cook eggs and such though, but I have yet to make a meatloaf for breakfast . But like I said, most often I eat breakfast foods for breakfast. In fact today I had a bowl of that spicy microwave ramen noodle soup that comes in a cardboard bowl and a ham sandwich. Yesterday I ate at the Huddle house with my buddy and had what I ordered here this morning, though I did have a piece of fried chicken left over from dinner Sunday before I came here. Aaanyway, let’s check the weather in my neck of the woods.
Heavy rainfall is they are expecting as much as two inches of rain out of this. Brenda is worried about the sump pumps should we lose power during a “storm”. I said it’ll take more than any two inches to get that sump pump full now as dry as the ground is.
Actually, I did know it rained in Hawaii, but I’ll admit I never think about it so it seemed weird to hear someone mention it. People just never think about anything but sunshine and surf. Shoot, I don’t even think it ever showed it raining on Magnum either.

Good morning. It's 67°F with 95% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a fair chance of rain. The high will be 75°F.Looks like a dreary wet day here in the Sportsman's Paradise. Today I plan to clean up the layout a bit. I say a bit because if I think about cleaning up the whole thing it seems a daunting task. Now I wonder how well my plan will stand up to interruptions. I'm also waiting on a package to arrive from north of the US/CAN border. I have no idea what's in it so I just can't wait to get my hands on it.
