Good Evening All,

Shoes. I have two pairs of sneakers I wear at the track and work replacing as needed, I have two pair of work  boots. One steel toed for the museum yard where they are required, and one normal pcair which I had on when my foot was smushed and saved the toes by allowing them to flatten instead of cutting them off.

I wear the regular boots during cold weather as walking in snow in sneakers is nuts, no? The CFO has two pair of sneakers (dress and work) Her officiating sneakers and a pair of actual shoes. Wears them once or twice a year. So much for stereotypes.

Pets. Two dogs now but we had a cat until the house fire. She survived in the basement where she hung out so she chuld  sneak into the layout and lay waste to it or at least lay waste in it. Two days after the fire I was cleaning and a bolt of lightning shot by me on her way out of the basement, She took up with the neighbors where she resided until last year when she was hit by a car. The two dogs? One is a pound mutt retreiver/shepard mix and the neatest dog we've ever had, That would be Rupert, about 12 this year. The other is a rescue toy rat terrier about 4 now and a yip yap. She's insanely possesive of us and a hoot to have around. That would be Rattie, proper name Amelia.

Here, Habitat for Humanitys' store is called Restore for recycle store - clever, eh? They are in our last shop building and we brought all the leftovers from the remodel on our new shop to them. We also had a couple of boxes of the special flourescent bulbs we used there that we donated.

Still working on drops for the buss. I solder them to the already soldered rail joiners on at least 3 foot centers (more next to turnouts - right Lee?) Drill an 1/8" hole and feed the wire through to beneath the layout.

When we go to Oz in November we want to do some rail fanning and maybe ride some trains near Sydney. We're trying to figure that part of the trip.

Time to get some sleep. See y'all tomorrow.    J.R.

Mostly cloudy here. Weather guesser says there's a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight.

No sign of the nephew as yet. I wonder how fast he can find another place to stay rent free? My father doesn't play games and he doesn't make idle threats either. Looks like I may be working on repairing that pipe myself tomorrow no matter how much it hurts.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow maybe.

Shoes. When we go someplace and need to get dressed up, I pull on my good boots and ready I am. Then for some reason, Brenda comes up with a pair of shoes in her hand. One shoe in each hand. Lifts them up for me to see then asks “which one?” I say “I’d wear both. That’s how it’s usually done” She says “no, which one looks better with what I’m wearing” I look at the shoes, then her outfit. Then back at the shoes. Then I say…”they both look the same” She drops her arms, turns and returns to the closet mumbling “you’re no help” and something I have yet to understand. This went on for as long as we’ve been together up until maybe a year…nope. Forgot. She still does it. Same thing happened a couple months ago for a funeral. Don’t understand why either. She will tell people I don’t match things. I have blue jeans as pants because they go with anything. I have black dress up boots because…they go with anything. Yet she continues to get miffed when she asks me to do what she readily admits I won’t do.

Todd,, thats been happening here too!! Must be a universal woman thingWink Weird Laugh

Lee, I see you have the similar issues!Laugh

Ray, Barry, Jim, nice kittehs,

Ken and the rest of you dog owners, don't fret, we love doggies too. We just prefer the low maintenance cats for day trippin on the weekends , or those nights  if we both work late, nobody has to fly home to care for the dog.Smile

Oh, and that OTHER subject we were talking about, you know , trains??

I got started win 1964 with a Lionel HO set, with a rubber band drive FA. Still have it, got a running mate for it, and refitted the shells with Walthers FA chassis and DCC. I can still run the trains of my childhood, with greater control that ever, and no more rubber bands!!Big Smile

Well, thats about it for tonight, Midnight needs a brushing and they are both sniffing around  the end table that hold the catnip. Mischief

Take care, Smile

I don't look forward to replacing the H2O heater as a new to-code one for mobile homes is around $3k. Maybe we can sneak in another household one like we have

That's what we do here.

I was wondering how Jeffrey was gonna make out. Sounds like a threat from grandpa helped. Wink

I don't look forward to replacing the H2O heater as a new to-code one for mobile homes is around $3k. Maybe we can sneak in another household one like we have , but we really need a plumber to do it as I am not that handy at making pipes connect to nat gas that well...I know some of you may do it all the time, but not me. I could have saved about $2K if I could have installed the new nat gas furnace myself, but I don't want to asphyxiate us.

MOH has had a cold for about 2 weeks now..And I am getting it now. A frog in my throat is being "productive". So as MOH looses cold I get it, then I give it back to MOH a vicious circle. MOH went to bed early and didn't want anything to eat..lately the 2 weeks I have been cooking whatever MOH wants in an effort to get MOH to eat anything.

Well, I think I go to bed early too, we had a very early day...Up at 1 am boht of us all night.

Been reading about your woes on gas prices Stateside...

We've just hit a 4 year high of the equivalent of $6.05 a Gallon. But then our minimum hourly rate for work is $16 per hour compared to what roughly $5 an hour on average in the states? I earn $22 per hour.

What I don't get is four years ago Oil was $150 per barrel and we were paying $1.60 (Australian $) now Oil is $92 a barrel and we are paying $1.57!!! What a rort. Fuel retailers here are making about 20c per litre profit. 5 years ago they were making 2c a litre profit. Australians SHOULD only be paying around $1.10 per litre but we are paying 47c more per litre.

/end rant.

Edit: I see we are talking about animals... We have two cats and two dogs at home. A Siamese named Elvis who is 11, a long haired mix breed called Jazz (6yrs) a Labrador who is 3 named Abbey and a Kelpie x Labrador who is 4 named Lucy. They all have musical themes. Elvis is obvious and so is Jazz. Can you figure out the two dogs names origins?

I'll post a photo of them later!

Hi Guys

Well the first day at the new place was only a short 5 hour orientation and tomorrow I started the training with another guy, basically learning the ropes of the place. I also start on the afternoon shift on Friday.

Good afternoon. 78° here heading to 85°.

Tried pulling the kitchen sink out this morning. Not happening! That baby is epoxied in there and isn't budging for anything less than a tank! So reverted to plan B. I removed the drawers and the roller mechanisms and ripped the front off the cabinet and dismantled the framework that held the drawers (four drawers stacked vertically). They WON'T be going back in. I'll put shelves in when it's rebuilt. The drawers were always in the way anytime one was open. Back to the problem. I still can't get to the pipe! It's right there in the open tucked in next to the sink. The water heater is back in the corner so I have to reach in bent foward while on my knees. Well, my foot keeps getting in the way! I can't be on both knees because the foot (in the boot of course, can't be in other way) does not bend at all and there's no ankle to bend so I end up twisted and in intense agony. I can't be on my left knee with my right foot flat on the floor because that's an impossibility. The aforementioned problems with the aforementioned  result. Same for having my legs crossed. Ain't happening! No matter what I do I feel like I'm tied up in a series of knots. I'll just have to wait for my nephew to get in from work (incredibly that's lasted for more than two weeks) and let him tackle it. I asked him to last night and he gave me a flat 'No'. I called my father and asked him if he knew anybody who can do it. 'No'. Have X (I won't mention my nephew's name here) do it. I told him he already said no. "Be right back". A little while later he calls back and says X will be there tomorrow after work. Well I found out today what was said to X. "You've enjoyed living in my rent home for eight months rent free right? You've enjoyed having the use of my truck and trailer anytime no questions asked?". X answers yes to both. "Do this or bring me my keys and get out of my house and take your junk with you.". Talk about an offer you can't refuse!

In other news Murphy messed with my vans battery. Three days in a row it's been run down. It's only two months old. I checked and made sure everything was off. No power drain. I checked the output from the regulator. 14v. Nothing wrong there. Took the battery to the parts place and had it tested. Lo and behold the tester said replace it. They did a load test on it. Absolutely failed! It wouldn't hold amperage for even three seconds! Turns out it had a dead cell with another cell showing as weak. Got a replacement under warranty. Cost was $0.00.

Had lunch at my parents place as it's a bit hard to cook here with the kitchen in pieces. I also helped my father get his RV and tag-along car ready to go in for inspection. Hardest part of that was rigging the tow bar and that was a snap.

Mornin'....  Opps!  Ahem...  Afternoon folks!

Zoe, I see you're still here so can I get a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes w/real maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and a cup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug?  Thank you Ma'am!

Just getting to post here as I have been busy doing some other stuff this morning.  So far the sun is shining out there, but is predicted to hide behind some clouds later on today.  Can't wait for the Maple tree next door to lose its leaves...  It definitely is shading my roof this time of year.

I need to do some laundry (Galaxy knows all about THAT) so I will be able to spend some quality time in the train rooms as well.  I also need to do the grocery shopping I didn't get to yesterday.  Actually good that I waited to today as my Credit Card is above where I like it to be so I can easily pay it off in full (No interest that way...).  Today it should close out this month's charges and anything put on it this afternoon should show up on next months charges.

Todd, great way to have old items reused!  I have a lot of boxes of old stuff I have been trying to find a home for without them landing in the landfill.  I want to get rid of as much as possible this fall.  I was hoping I could add items to my DIL's annual yard sale, but she didn't have one this year.  There are a few second hand shops I need to check with to see if they are interested in any of the items.  They are all "Family Heirlooms" from my Mother's accumulated junk...

Need to get back to doing some other items.  Catch you all later!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and some of that cherry PIE please. Thanks.

Laundry. Hrmph. You guys ain’t seen laundry.

Sorry, no American Flyer of Lionel for me. T’was AHM. Still have it and as of last it still runs like new. Which, compared to new, is pretty crappy, but it does have a nice buzzing sound that fills the air reminding me so much of when I was a child with it.

Dennis- I used to grumble and store all the stuff from home projects too. Then before this remodel thing happened I found this wonderful place in Springfield called Habitat For Humanities. You’ve probably heard of it. The place that builds houses for the needy. What I didn’t know is to help fund these things they have a “store” if you will, that sells used stuff including appliances. Door knobs, hinges, odd boxes of tile…you name it. Kinda like a Goodwill for builders. I now take all sorts of “leftovers” there. The sinks I replaced, countertops, the stove, faucets. Today, I hope, I’ll take the old shower door (yes, all moutings hardware was retained and put in a bag), and an unused sheet of cement board. I could take it back to Menard’s I guess, and $9 is $9, but I’ll probably just give them that as the old  bathroom mirror and the shower door will be on top, so I’ll probably just say take that too.

That place has been around for years I guess, I just didn’t know about it. Boy could I have helped them out with the tons of stuff Mom had. She hoarded many things for those rental houses she had. Probably could a saved a whole dumpster expense.

Yet she continues to get miffed when she asks me to do what she readily admits I won’t do.

Welp, I thought this would be a quick in and out today as I had not much to say, guess I was wrong. So I’ll just take my leave and continue on with cleaning up around here. Tomorrow is trash day so many things will leave this house. Also there is some MORE laundry to do and if all works out well, I will take a couple things to Habitat For Humanities. But first.....Ziva.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning, Chloe.  Sorry I missed you yesterday.  I spent the whole morning trying to get online.  I am on Larry's laptop.  It is something in my 'puter, and not the connection.  Sorry about the tiny print.  The laptop does not change font or size.QuestionQuestionQuestion

The rest of the week is crazy, so my appearances will be sporadic.  Have a good week.

Good Morning all,

53F, Hi today737F, Low 57F the Freeze-Thaw cycle starts

I went to the train sale last night.  I thought there would be more stuff.  I spent $110 but I brought home some Walther’s Proto 2000, never been run items so to me they were NIB:

X2 PRR E7’s units powered DC

X2 PRR FB2 units dummies

X1 PRR Drop end mill gondola

X3 PRR 4 bay coke service hoppers

According to the 2013 Walther’s catalog these were valued at just over $500 retail.

Galaxy, to keep my sanity on its toes I have 2 cats and one puppy.  I warned Dorothy that the puppy likes to remove loose nuts and bolts (discovered this while Katje helped me assemble the futon in the living room) I understand Dorothy fell flat on her caboose because the bottom bolts were missing from her crutches yesterday while I was at work.

The town on the other side of the county line is Mentor, OH, but in 2000 when I bought this house the property taxes there was $2,000/year and only $1,000/year in Euclid.  Mentor does an excellent job drawing in big companies.  12 years later Mentor property taxes are still $2000 and mine are about $2500.

Gary, I have DCC.  One day I was getting ready to run trains and the locomotive wouldn’t move.  I increased the power and it still wouldn’t move but the headlight came on.  I double checked my throttle and increased the power a little more.  Then it happened: kitty #2 was sitting on the tracks this whole time around the corner and got zapped and right after she flew off the layout the locomotive took off at about 75% power.  I haven’t had any cat vs. layout problems since….

Karl, I don’t think us men folk are supposed to understand the women and shoes issue.  I took my GF to buy one pair of nurse’s shoes and we walked out with 6 pairs of shoes, 2 tote bags, and 3 purses 3 hours later.  If I go buy a pair of shoes for work I walk in buy 1 pair of shoes, typically the first pair I try on and leave all under 20 minutes.

TA462, I have good insurance, my orthotics out of pocket cost is only about $36, but then I have to buy shoes with removable insoles so the orthotics fit. Typically non-steel toe work boots so the ankle is supported and there is a hard sole to keep the foot from flexing.  I consider myself lucky that’s my only real foot issue.  If I wear something like sneakers for more than a few days I’ll throw my hip or lower back out because I unconsciously favor the one foot too much. I’m only 45 I can only imagine how bad it will be in 20 years…

Garry, I still have my first train.  1969? TYCO Santa Fe 0-4-0 switcher with a slope back tender (MANTUA) with a jade green stock car, red 250 ton crane and boom car, El Capitan Box car, and a steel caboose. Over and under figure 8 of track and I had a coke box to use as a tunnel.

Ulrich, I would have said it German-American day, I don’t know but there are some “Days” that you hear about its approach for days or weeks on the TV and in the Radio but then you have some “Days” that come and go without much fanfare. There was a time when the larger cities were settled in pockets of minorities and it was cool to go to “Little Italy” or “Slovak Village” or “Irish Town Bend” and immerse yourself in a different culture for a few hours, I’m afraid those communities have come and gone, but if they were still around German-American day would have been a week long party with whole streets shut down….   I really need to go back to Toledo and just relax at one of the beer gardens for a couple of hours, LOL.

Morning guys,

Up early as I have to be at that new job by 8am. They have quite the process of trying to get into the place if you dont have a access card. You have to go through a security check and they will open the doors for you. I hope I get that card or getting in and out will be a nightmare. I have to go grab and shower and some breakfast and take the garbage out. I will check back in later this afternoon. Wish me luck guys Smile

Shoes...I own two pair, Dr. Scholls, and I alternate them. They are both black and can act as dressy or casual. I have no need for steel toed boots, and I do have a pair of hiking style boots for winter wear, but rarely wear them, In fact Not sure where they got off to now...

As far as cats, I would rather have  a dog, I think {having had both}, but we had 2 cats for many years. In June we had to put our 17 y/o to sleep with kidney failure. Now the 14 y/o orange fluffy long haired one is all who is left.  I like the easy "maintenance" of a cat...a few litter boxes, a big bowl of water or two and a few bowls of cat food and one can go away for  week and not worry to much. A dog has to have someone to let it out and walk it.

Train nut coming over and gotta do some shopping before he does...but I may delay shopping til tomorrow. He wants to look at cars while in the city so we may do that too, as he has the whole day in the city today.

Its clearing up to be a beautiful day! Warm and sunny high in the high 60s. We have some outside weatherization projects to do, so it is good...and we can get the train nut frined to help?

I DO have to go to the credit union for some banking.

it's early, but since I am up, I have lit the prayer candle for those in need!

have a great day.

Good Morning

Well, good to see that I am not the only person up at strange times...dang chemo induced insomnia....

We are getting rained and winded on again...after a mainly dull day blossomed forth with sun..in time for sunset....

This morning will be rainy and cold as well as windy..supposed to stop raining later in the morning and be variably dull for the rest of the day...

As for kittehs...we have a little one here...

As for shoes...meh...the only shoes we have here are no label shoes...work boots, dress loafers, and deck shoes....oh...Audrey has her running shoes and a pair of penny loafers....big whoop....

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

Toto, Follow the Yellow Brick Road to...

Morning Coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Often, here people talk of "robbing Peter to pay Paul", SO:

Meaning

To take from one merely to give to another; to discharge one debt by incurring another.

Origin

There's a text, first published in 1661, that purports to explain the origin of this expression - Peter Heylyn's Ecclesia Restaurata:

The lands of Westminster so dilapidated by Bishop Thirlby, that there was almost nothing left to support the dignity; for which good service he had been preferred to the see of Norwich, in the year foregoing. Most of the lands invaded by the great men of the court, the rest laid out for reparation to the church of St Paul - pared almost to the very quick in those days of rapine. From hence first came that significant by-word (as is said by some) of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

A 350 year-old text claiming to explain the origin of a phrase is usually almost as good as a smoking gun for etymologists. Regrettably, Heylyn's understanding was flawed; the phrase was known long before 1661 and even before the birth of the 16th century cleric Thomas Thirlby. The ecclesiastical tome Jacob's well: an English treatise on the cleansing of man's conscience, circa 1450, includes the phrase in it's original form:

To robbe Petyr & geve it Poule, it were non almesse but gret synne.

The expression may be even earlier than 1450. John Wyclif's Selected English Works contains this text:

Lord, hou schulde God approve that you robbe Petur and gif is robbere to Poule in ye name of Crist?

There is however, some dispute as to the date of the above. It is reprinted in a Victorian book but the original is now lost. If it does indeed arise from Wyclif the date would be 1380. Others have speculated that a more realistic date is around 1500.

The expression was well enough established in English for it to have been considered proverbial by John Heywood when he published A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue in 1546:

Rob Peter and pay Paul: thou sayest I do; But thou robbest and poulst Peter and Paul too

The phrase was also in use in other European countries and was known in France by at least 1611, when Cotgrave produced A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues:

Découvrir Saint Pierre pour couvrir Saint Paul [Strip Peter to clothe Paul]

The precise date is not the only aspect of this phrase that is somewhat uncertain. Scholars also disagree as to the thinking of whoever coined it. Given that any two names would work in a 'rob X to pay Y' proverb, why choose Peter and Paul? It has been suggested that the primary reason for Peter and Paul is the alliteration, i.e. the same reason that Jack was paired with Jill when they went up the hill. That may well be part of the story, but there's surely more to it. The similarities between Saint Peter and Saint Paul go deeper than their sharing of the letter P.

have a GREAT day

The prayer candle will be lit at 8 am

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

I know, I know, I need to head to bed. Old habits die hard.

Today was real slow, then around 5:30 PM it turned into a train wreck. Good thing I like trains! Whistling Won't go into details, it would take to long.

Jeremy No news on the possible new job. In some respects I am sort of glad? In many respects I don't want to mess with cars anymore. I prefer cars as a hobby and it is a hobby that I have lost interest in for now.

Only Good News Today, I have a 3 day weekend coming and my LHS is open every day I am off! Cool

 See you all later.
