I've been looking at some of the paint colors I have and found one I like. It's a mis-tint satin latex I picked up from Lowe's called 'Silver Bells'. At this point the test tube is the only one that's painted.

Looks good Jeff,
Have you thought about using that textured spray paint to give it some roughness? then maybe going over it with a wet sandpaper to smooth it down a bit before adding your final color of grey paint?
Evening, Chloe, I'll just have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a hot fudge brownie sundae, please (nothing heavy... Thanks!
First, my apologies for missing wishing you a Happy Birthday, Galaxy! I hope it was a good one, and that you got lots of PM's... I guess you must've had a good time on your birthday, since you're resting up today, eh?
Ray, from your descriptions of the museums' goings-on, if I ever got up that way, I'd definitely find out if the trains were gonna be running.
Stan (B&O1952), great pics of the Berkshires (HEY, DUKE! Wake up!!) you have there. (Sorry for yelling, but we have one of the Diners who dozes a bit in the back of the Diner, but he perks up when Berkshires are mentioned, so I didn't want him to miss your photos.)
Jeff, how are you feeling today/tonight? Hopefully better than you were on Monday. Also, did you put a speed governor on your mother's wheelchair? She might try to make a break for the exit on 3/4 speed (or more)...
(Oh,not that I'm a person who watches a certain Monday night sport, but I did hear this huge collective groan for some reason that evening. I don't think I'll ask *anything* about what THAT was...)
Todd - and that little bitty linoleum job started how long ago? Never mind, I probably shouldn't ask...
Barry, that is one funny cat/dog/whatever! ROTFL! (Hmm, does sorta resemble Spring...)
Dan - you mean you got 'corrupted' at the LHS by those iNvisible scalers? (That's okay, we have a fair number of them in here, too. )
Mobilman44 - good to see a guy with a HEALTHY appetite in the Diner at breakfast time. And don't be a stranger - Y'all c'mon back soon, y'hear? (Said with a sorta Midwestern/Southern accent...) Glad you stopped by! Oh, and that bouncer guy that Galaxy mentioned? That might just be our twin servers' cousin Vinnie (nope, you don't want to meet him for the most part, and definitely NOT in the alley out back of the Diner, after you've been rude to Zoe, Chloe or the rest of our servers in here...)
Psst! Diners! Better tone down all that talk about Christmas cards - you'll get Todd all stressed out about which ones he has to pick out for us. ... (Shh! He'll hear us!)
Paul, if you can't find another not-so-LHS for the Arizona Rocks & Minerals stuff, you can find some of their dealers at: http://rrscenery.com/NEW/Stores.html
or order them from his/their website here: http://www.rrscenery.com/NEW/index.html
Hope that helps. [Edit:] Looks like you may have taken care of that; well, save the links, in case you run out...
Ulrich, best wishes on getting suitable structures; that price does sound more than a wee bit high for mere mortal tastes/budgets. That idea of weathering the buildings may help you.
Dennis - to the Diner also! A real, live 1:1 RRer! Have you started plans/dreams for a layout, or have you had time for that, due to your day job?
TMarsh HOLY MOLY LEE!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU MOST MUCH for your recommendation!!!!! The Furminator just showed up in the mail opened it up, we went outside and man-o-man did the fur fly!!!! Neighbors can't see out of their windows for the fur. AND, as a big bonus, she actually LIKES being brushed with it!!! Next I try it on the dog.

W**k today was.. hectic. Got lunch (sandwich that someone had saved in a fridge in one of the offices) about 4 p.m. (and leavin' time is usually around 4:30 p.m.) Hopefully tomorrow will be a tad less hectic. (Whew!...)
About time for me to mosey on out of here - got men's small group at church tonight. Will be keeping in prayer all of you in here (and loved ones) in need of comfort, healing, rest or otherwise.
Blessings and prayers,

Thanks,
I actually do have a layout I started in November 2007........it is a modified version of the "Wawbeek & Sunmount Ry.........6' x 14' with a 2' x 6' extension in the process of being built.....you can see some pics in the "Layouts & Layout building" thread under my layout and Layout Extension.
I spent 8 months in the backshop of the Strasburg RR.....but left there in Feb. 2011.......worked at a truck builder for 16 months and left there to go to the East Penn RR and I`ve been there for 7 weeks now.

JimRCGMOOzJim, now that we know you have a 'Cape' near you (too), it may be more confusing for people wondering which 'Jim' they're replying to. (Unless they look at the time of day when a post was - that could tip 'em off...)
Hey CAPEJim
If you were referring to me mentioning CAPE in my last post I was referring to the whether term "Convective Available Potential Energy" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convective_available_potential_energy
Altough we do have many capes in Queensland... Cape York, Cape Tribulation... but these are 1400km from me! The nearest cape to me is "Cape Moreton" is about 50km north of me on Moreton Island, Cape Moreton is the location for the oldest light house in Queensland with it being built in 1857, interestingly the only light house built by New South Wales before Queensland became it's own state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Moreton_Light

Welcome Dennis! Since Mobilman44 stopped in and we just filled him in on the place, and I hope he didn't think we were too overboard, just kinda nose through what we talked about.
We don't always list the does and don'ts if you will, but from time to time it's god to keep them out there. So ever so often when someone stops in for the first time some of us just run them past just to make sure no little issues. Kinda like a 100th customer wins sorta thing.
I wish I could find that description from years ago that told all about the diner, how it worked and the employee schedule (calling Flo, Zoe dosn't always go over well. Don't ask me how I know ) It got lost in the great crash of 2010. I know I had printed it out too, but I put it someplace where I could find it and now I don't remember where that was.
HEY guess what? No Willie Nelson didn't stop by, but I did go down to the trainroom today. Stood there and thought...."what a mess" Pulled a couple spider webs away and asked myself where in the world did all those little wood chips came from! Then I looked up and remembered. Wood floor staples. When I blew the staples into the floor it sent THOUSANDS of little wood chips raining down on Toddland (of which I'm king). No roof damage reported so it doesn't appear I have to make an insurance agents office......yet.

Time for me to call it a night. You all know by now what I've been up to today so I won't waste your time and mine with a recap. The grain elevator project is starting to come together and is quite honestly one of the most ambitious projects I've undertaken in many years and is the first scratch build I've dared to tackle since 2003. I'm hoping it'll turn out as good as much of my past work did but I was much more physically able then. See y'all tomorrow.
Goooooooooooooooood Evening, plate of cheeseburgers, plate of fries, bucket of 7-Up please 'n thank-you...Rerun and I will leave the roast beef for JIM from Missouri

JEFF: THAT elevator looks to be coming along good! Great idea, using plaster to cap the end. As for paint choice, while I usually go "right" (some would argue I go "far right"), this time I'm gonna go far left. Then again, I've got THAT pesky little prototype hang-up going for me. THAT said, there's probably an elevator somewhere painted green and I'll bet some Cargill decals would look right at home on it.
TODD: So tell me, how did you manage to get Brenda out back for a grooming???
Making smooth plastic look like concrete: I've had to use quite a bit of Squadron Putty (white) on my elevator, "Elevator G," so had the bright idea to use coarse sandpaper to not only smooth the many joints (especially on Walthers' silos), but also to rough-up the surface and make it look more concrete-ish. Well (still down, toads have packed up and moved away), after two coats of Poly Scale "aged concrete," you'd never know I did THAT. Oh well. Can't lose if you don't play right? At least where I filled-in windows (on the main structure), and filled gaps and joints, it's nice and smooth.
Here's a very quick "grab shot" of the main structure so far, lots left to do here.
I can't wait to see JEFF's creation.
Have a good night and a better tomorrow everybody!

Yes Flo, I know I am all wise the person in the dinner. Thank You For The Beer!
Welcome Dennis and Mobilman44 to the dinner. I will send you my address for the $15.00 a month membership dues. I take Visa, MasterCard or rolling stock as payment. I hope you know I am kidding, but if you want to send the money anyway I will take it!
Well I am off Thursday! Reason for the long faces you ask?
1 Have to call BoS (for the new folks BoS is Bank of America or as we know them here at the dinner Bank of Stupid) Fighting with them to keep my house I have lived in for 20 years. Every person I talk to tells me something different.
2 Have to pick up my daughter's cars for brakes and a oil change. Will be doing the brakes and oil change at a friends shop. Don't get me started as to why I am not doing them at the shop I work at! She want's it done in a hour? Does not understand that Bob is going to fit us in when there is a rack vacant.
By the way, she has not changed her oil for over a year now! We got in a fight over that!
3 Have to run the wife around for her stuff.
4 Cut the front and rear grass.
5 Fix the water-heater. Long story there.
6 Go to the bank and other stuff.
I am off my for now.

Oh, G musta been busy yesterday and tired this morning. No trivia posted for breakfast rading.
Partly sunny, with a high near 74.
Ken- Daughter story sounds oh so familiar. Mine was/is same way. Just waaaaay to busy to wait for someone who won’t drop what they’re doing to do it on her schedule. I stopped doing it. She can explain to the guys at Jiffy lube why she should be catered to and bumped in line because she is the only person in the world who has kids and she just doesn’t have time to wait for the other people. She’s getting better. The boy now, he don’t know what a wrench is, but he got him a Cadillac and he pulls that thing into the place every 3500 or 3 or 4 months for the oil change and checks on every little noise the thing makes. Sometimes a bit anal if you ask me, but hey, he learned from his mistakes and now he has a real decent car, he’s gonna take care of it. Besides with three kids he needs reliable transportation. I hope the girl learns as well.
Hope Lee's feeling better. Not sure what creeping crud is. Might could be some weed he's dealing with in the yard too. Never thought of that.
Well, Brenda wanted to go to Red Lobster last night for all you can eat shrimp. I don’t know, maybe it’s me, but I’ve never had a good meal there. Not bad, just not…..good. Last night was no different. The pasta for the Some Kinda Shrimp and Alfredo with a Funny Wang Taste over pasta, was over done and pastey, The, oh shoot. What’s that stuff called? I say it all the time, Brenda’s favorite. Really? If I wasn’t trying to…., Shrimp Scampi! That’s it. The shrimp was over done and mealy and the second one was a bit better, but still over done. Brenda’s was better than mine and her Terriyaki shrimp…...on a steeck, was pretty good actually. I guess me and that old Red Lobster just don’t get along. Ooodles of people love it and swear by the place. I can’t be so generous. Waiter was good though so I tipped accordingly. Food quality is not his fault. I mean it looked good, er at least like it usually looks. That’s another thing. Nothing I’ve got from Red Lobster looks fresh. It always looks….well…prepackaged and heated up. Again, maybe just me. Now Joe’s Crab Shack on the other hand… .
Tired of waiting! Today I proceed with the shower and hope for the best with the base mortar not quite set yet. It’s been a week and a half now and the stuff still ain’t dried. Of course it is an inch and a half thick sooooo…..??? Hopefully today I get the roof paper hung and the backerboard up at least. Gotta w**k tonight so that, oh and some laundry needs done, so that kinda shortens my day. Not to mention the other odds and ends that show up in a retired persons day.....since we aren't w**king and have nothing else to do.
Ya’ll have a good day!!!!
Lunchtime!
Flo, a Barry-sized burger, fries and an RBF, please!
Barry - thanks for passing that cold along. Not only that my head is clogged, I also got a terrible toothache! Need to see the dentist soon - I hope I get an appointment next week. I will have Petra call him - she is his pet patient
I went to our city hall today to pick up my new ID card - the old one will expire in a couple of weeks. That new card cost me 50 $, as there is a chip in them containing biometric data. A new passport, which is essentially the same thing, but only has some pages for visas, will cost 100 $ - too much for me. Once my old one has expired, I will not be able to travel outside of Europe any longer -
Great to see some new faces in this places, but I am also missing some of the old ones.
Have a splendid day!
Good Morning All,
62F and occasional showers today high around 68F. No layout time again but I did get my new car computer dash data harnesses "pinned out" and one installed and functioning ready for next week and VIR. Doing wiring stuff is not that hard as I get the harnesses made to my design and I just need to adapt what was interperted incorrectly or fix connectors that are wrong. Blah, blah...
From there we deal with a 30's Bentley today fixing the toe link on the front axel and some general cleaning/maintainence.
Did do some more over the weekend with the swing bridge on the layout. I'll try to get some pics this weekend though I'm still unsure about cutting the rails to make it active when I can still easily duck under it for now.
My prayers for those ailing and in need. Ulrich, good to see you back again on a regular basis. Hope things finally turn for the better for you.
Jeff, did you ever figure out what was the story with your Moms' chair batteries and the chager? Was it a low cut on the charger or were the batteries just expired from use? Nosey peoplewant to know. On a not related subject, my layout as of last weekend has a New Haven I-5 and three Pullman passenger cars on it as I check more recent trackwork. I think I have a gauge problem on one bridge as it seems tight (and that track is glued down right on the integral cross ties. Should be fun to fix).
Time to pick up tools and be useful. CUL, J.R.

Oh I know ... ...
even HO scale has a lot of "invisible" stuff when compared to the 1:1 equipment I work on, so there On the upside, Tichy has some kits yet (not as many as I'd like, but we'll have to make do with what is available).
Dan - your eyes must be lot younger than mine. I am still into N scale, but I am afraid I will have to go back (grow up?) to HO scale again, as my vision is left a little impaired after my recent heart issues. If I had the space and the funds - I´d even go up to O scale (!) - not the Hi-Rail stuff, but true scale. Even better would be scale 1 - with realistic sound and smoke - just watch this little video!

At about 3,800 $ a piece, aren´t those locos a bargain?
Good morning. It's 69° with 97% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 88°.Well as far as the color selection for the silos goes I still haven't made up my mind. So far there's been at least one vote each color. There was even a vote for the color (silver bells) on the test piece. It's a grayish color like concrete. So far at two votes each the favorites seem to be #1 (far left) stone gray and #4 the grayish brown.1 Stone gray ******* (far left)2 Yellow *3 Dark green *4 Light brown ***5 Dark smoke gray * (far right)6 Silver bells (test color) *Today I'll be rough sanding the silos to get them ready for painting. I sanded a couple last night and I like the look of them. I'm using a P150 sanding cloth. I'll also hit them with the sanding drum on the Dremel. I used that on the test piece yesterday and it had a somewhat rough texture like old concrete. After all I don't want it looking brand new. And I still have to pick a color.
Good morning, Diners. I seem to be getting a late start this morning. Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!
Jeffrey, I vote for the lightest color that you have in earth tones. Was your test color almost white?
I plan to work outside this morning. Things are so dry around here. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. Once it starts raining, it won't quit.

I suppose that could be true Ulrich -- just had my 26th b-day a week ago (well, 8 days).
Scale 1 is definitely nice; though I think by the time I'm having trouble with seeing N or HO, I'll be solidly "modelling" 1:1 scale. Here's a video of the steam locomotive owned by the historical society I'm a part of (it was taken in the 80s I think):

yup... it's going to take a *lot* of work to put her back together. Off the top of my head:
- Piston Rings (we have new ones, waiting to be installed)- Cylinder Liners - New tubes and flues (15y FRA requirement)- Boiler Integrity Ultrasound (in the late '90s, it was checked, and OK ... but still needs a new check)- Frame work (requires boiler removal)- Main drive axle put back in- all drive wheels properly quartered, and rods re-attached- boiler put back on frame- appliances re-attached- Automatic Stoker fixed (loco and tender portions)- boiler insulation and cover sheeting re-applied- FRA OK that all is in order (veeeery last step, probably missing things before this one).
Mornin' everyone,
Zoe, just a bowl of organic pumpkin seed granola and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug please.
Nice sunny Fall day outside here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 59°F with a high in the mid 60s later this afternoon. I will have to go outside and watch the meter run backwards for a while!
Jeffrey, I like your "test" color the best. Concrete is a very hard thing to get to look right on a model because concrete isn't "a" color but an ever changing group of colors. Also concrete varies due to the mix and the gravel used to make it. I have used a base color of medium gray followed by several very light coats (more of a quick mist from a ways back) of various spray can colors (brown, black and other grays). The roughness on your test gives some variance as you see it and is a good base color... Just my
