Good morning, Diners.  Coffee, please, Chloe.  I have another all day class.  You can count on good weather, because I am stuck inside.

Curt,  Glad you only had bronchitis.  I hope you son is doing better.

Ray,  How did the rototilling go?  Did you get your raised beds started?

Tonight is the MR meeting.  Fun times.

Sue

Good morning, I guess another coffee will do and that Eggs Benedict sounds real good!

The weather's been great here the past few days, temps are starting to drop into high 40s at night, but 70s during the day. May still get that last touch of summer I hope.

Jeff:  It sure sounded like you were going to overdo it yesterday, I guess so. You gotta do what you gotta do though. Take care of yourself today. I'll tend to do the same, but I'm lucky the sun doesn't bother me- must be that Italian blood, just tan like crazy.

Curt:  That's a rough couple of days, hope you'll be feeling better today. Sorry to hear of you son's troubles. I know how difficult these addictions can be. the physical and especially physcological problems can be so hard to overcome. Hopefully w/ all your support and early intervention your son can turn this around. A family member is dealing w/ an opiate addition- That Demon is almost impossible to get out of your head. Prayers for you and your family, a rough road ahead.

GARRY: Your trip is taking you near so many, but I guess  just not close enough for any visits. I was also wondering about TSF's signature, Maybe it's just so large, I didn't get the IH at first. Kinda unique anyway....

Todd and Barry: Sounds like a lot of us have the same trouble w/ years and years of "STUFF". I dread the day I have to go there. Now w/ all 3 kids out of the house, what do I need 4 bdrm for? well other than a huge basement filled w/ 30 years of my construction stuff. It looks like Tool Time, Lumber yard and hardware store combined (trains only take up a small 16 x 20 spot). And of coarse my son has all his car parts from 2 project V8 S10s everywhere. Now I know what my Dad went through w/ 4 boys into muscle cars, dune buggies and Jeeps. Paybacks are a female dog!!!

Ken: It just never seem to end. But glad that that toe is returning to some sort of normal. Have they pinned down just what's wrong w/ it? Circulation, sugar, joint ?? And "BOOTS" are a PITA, don't trip and wreck something else.

Galaxy: I know those Mopar/ caravan pumps tend to be troublesome, My full sized van has had pump noise for years but still hasn't failed, the older caravan had a problem w/ the rack itself but never any leaks in the PS pump or hoses. Low fluid/ bad pump will let you know from just the sound, binding may be a rack problem, I hope not though. Go figure. My son is a Chrysler/ Jeep tech and maybe he has been maintaining this all along. Many times just takes the vehicle and does what it needs and never tells me 'til later. Hope that the furnace trouble can be blamed on that terrible sealing of the roof jack. Not many sealants tend to hold up under the expansion/ contraction of the pipe, unless it is a "B" vent. For added insurance, may be good idea to make sure there is that added ring/ collar positioned just above the seam. Plumbers/ heating contractors always want to leave that crap for me. Then I "Own" it. Last job the heating contractor left the jack just slid over the pipe and told the homeowner, have your contractor fit the jack to the roof shingles- we don't do that!!!!! They sure did it or they weren't going to get thier final Check!

Ray: Sounds like a great time @ the Museum, know you'll be filling us in.

TSF:  Well at least your sister's thermostat let you know in some decent weather, always will happen to me when the snow's flying and 20 degrees out.

So w**k this past week was rather unusual. My neighbor has been having trouble w/ lots of carpenter ants on their 3 season porch, wanted me to check it out. The neighbors laughed over my commute, moved my truck over to the next driveway. At first, no evidence of any obvious problem. Real PITA to "dissasseble", alum siding over 8" claps and build that unusual 50's style framework w/ storm window. End wall/ floor shows age and some rot. Well in 30 years of doing this, I've never seen such a concentration of a colony, the entire fir 4x8 girder was "Eaten" and loaded w/ ants. Didn't realize the extent until I ripped into it w/ a bar. My God, not hundred or even thousands- just a black mass poured out all over me and my curious dog looking on. Reminded me of the movie The Mummy, where those black things covered you up. I had ants all over me up my legs (wearing shorts) and all up my arms.  "Say ants in your Pants" They where even all over the dog. What a weird feeling and the dog was rolling and shaking them off too. Must have quite a sight! to see.

Thoughts and prayers, seems there's many needing them.

Funny thing is I didn't work all that hard yesterday. Oh well, I can take it easy for a few days.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes with local Maple Syrup form here in the Finger Lakes, a few links of breakfast sausage, and a cup (or 3) of Dark Roast Seneca Lake Blend coffee to get me started this morning.  Why the Buckwheat pancakes this morning?  Yesterday, I believe, was the 50th. anniversary of Birket Mills and the Village of Penn Yan, NY getting into the Guinness Book of World Records by creating the world's largest Buckwheat Pancake for a festival in Penn Yan...

Galaxy, you forgot Mother Myrtle's Snake Oil in your list!  (W. C. Fields in "Poppy" 1936).  It also made me think of the routine by Victor Borge where he tells the audience that his grandfather was an inventor, "He invented the cure for which there was no disease back in those days!  Unfortunately his wife later caught the cure and died..."  My MIL still had some opiate teething salve that was very popular way back when.  Even used some on my oldest son when he was an infant.  Yep the stuff did work well...  He slept it off in a few hours!  My father swore by a local Canandaigua NY remedy called "Dr. Brown's Black Oil" which could "cure" almost anything.  In fact he bought several bottles of the last case the late doctor's wife had....  You were warned on the bottle that it shouldn't be taken internally though!

Sue, I got the garden rototilled yesterday afternoon before heading out to the museum.  No little bunny rabbits appeared chopped up during the process so I guess momma bunny moved somewhere else!  It will be a couple weeks probably before I start building the raised beds.

Todd and Barry, It took my sister and I close to 6 months of working 6 days a week 5 or 6 hours a day to clean out and dispose of the junk my parents saved.  Completely filled a 20 yard dumpster and a large garbage truck after that.  The great find was 3 bags of plastic utensils saved form Chicken BBQs.  We are talking 30 gal garbage bags stuffed full.  One had knives, one had forks, and the other spoons!  My sister found them...  I didn't ever think she was going to catch her breath!  The other great find was an unopened bottle of "Mop and Glow" that was about 35 years old sitting in a cupboard.  It had been brought with them from the farm because they might need it, you know.  All the floors in the entire house were wall to wall carpet!

Bob, carpenter ants are a lot of fun to deal with.  I have had them in the house 3 times....  The first time I had to call the exterminator for a very large colony in the wall in my kitchen.  The second time was in some old exposed framing outside. I got the queen so they were easy to remove), and the last time I had a guy rebuilding the cellar entry.  he ran to his truck, grabbed a big can of spray and nailed the colony really good.  he also saw and killed the queen.  Don't want them around the house...  Nope!

Today I have to find all the "Hazardous Waste" around here (batteries, old fluorescent tubes, etc) to take over to the landfill for the Hazardous Waste collection day tomorrow.  Only happens once a year and I have to be there right on time,  prove I am a resident of this county and then wait in line to drop everything off.

Catch you all later!

  Mornng All,

Currently 59 with an expected high of 91 under sunny skies.

Rough couple days for my wife. She was still bleeding a bit so the sawbones decided she needed yet another test to see where. Wed. early afternoon they did an angigram. Surprise surprise, results were negative. But we think it irrated wherever she was bleeding from, because 3:00 AM Thursday she was bleeding alot. BP dropped to something like 62/42, temp was 95.7 breathing shallow. They moved her from oncology to Cardiac Intensive Care. I got the call at 4:35 AM, was at the hospital around 5:10. Oncologist does not want any more tests, gastroenteroligist wanted to do more. I had to step in and pilot this ship since there did not seem to be ayone in charge. Told everyone involved the Oncologist is in charge and anything has to be approved by him. Nurses agreed with me. Got home around 9:30 PM. She is almost stable now, so chemo will not start until she is stable.

Curt - prayers for your son and family during this difficult time.

Jeff - take care of the sunburn. Med side effects can be tough. I bruse like crazy now because of the neds I take.

Bob - My Italian blood keeps me from burning in the sun. Only got sunburned once in my life. Fell asleep in a boat with arms overhead.

Ken -Prayers for you foot

Prayers to all others in need.

Paul

Good Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a RBF, please. Thank you!

Diner's been fairly busy lately, I see. I think it was a day or two ago I stopped by, and we already have four pages of posts (or is that five?). Might (if I'm lucky) get caught up tonight; if not, tomorrow.

Jeffrey, how's your sunburn healing up? Did you put any aloe or such on it to help some of the burn pain?

Ray, so you'll still have the same internet provider, but they get to peek over your shoulder (virutally...)? (Ever watch the show "Person of Interest"?Whistling Or does your solar cell company cover (part of?) the cost of your internet?

Ken, nice photos - I'm guessing that is the layout in the K-10 hobby shop? Or is that a club layout? Rest up your feet (doctor's orders, y'know...)Whistling (hee, hee, hee...)

Well, about time to head for home (and laundry...).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Did you folks notices I seemed to stop in mid post?

I just remember I need to make a Electric payment on line and tried to. I got a Code 14 and the card was declined? Called the electric company and I was told code 14 meant I was DEAD? Laugh Guess the VA is putting out the Word! Whistling

Just got off the phone with my Bank (NOT BANK OF STUPID) and the teller enter the wrong deposit code.Guess I should not have been flirting with her! Big Smile I have known her for 20 years now, she is cute.

OK, back to the rest of the day.

Took Sue for her Stress Test today. She was all worked over nothing and passed with flying colors! Reason she refused to take the test the first time was because they where going to give her a I V that would make here heart beat faster. She did not like that idea and wanted to do the treadmill! Doctor said no and I agreed! Her back is a mess and her knees are just as bad!

Test went fine and she was in and out in about 1 hour with the I V. Her main worry was her heart would not slow down. It was a tad slower coming out than going in.

Far as my self, toe is still fat, but color looks good. I will see what it looks like Saturday.

 See you all later Ken

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, just a glass of ice tea while I decide what to have for supper tonight.

Got about 2/3rds. of the lawn mowed this afternoon.  Mower ran out of Battery energy the same time I did so it is back in the shed recharging and I am sitting here at the computer typing...  have all the "Hazardous Waste" recyclables packed away in the truck for the trip to the county landfill collection is done.  May actually get a bit more done in the train rooms tonight.

Jeffrey, I guess we can either call you a "Redskin" or a true Redneck for a while?  Seriously hope the burn improves soon.  Sunburn is not a good thing.  I also take a couple medicines that say to be careful not to be out in the sun without extra strong sunblock.  Then My dermatologist tells me to go sit in the sun for 30 minutes a day...

Ray, so you'll still have the same internet provider, but they get to peek over your shoulder (virutally...)? (Ever watch the show "Person of Interest"?Whistling Or does your solar cell company cover (part of?) the cost of your internet?

Jim, Hmmm.  Never heard of "Person of Interest"...  Of course, I gave up watching the idiot box years ago and don't miss it at all!  As far as them looking over my shoulder, 1. They do not have any access to any of my computers (they would need a password to be able to access it).  and 2. There is really not anything of interest stored on here anyway that couldn't be intercepted with some types of software from most any computer company.  The connection to their equipment is all they can access and that connection is separate from the computer.  It does go through the router, but not my computer.  Would be no different than you using a Wi-Fi connection at Starbucks.  I'm not worried as all the companies serving us with solar and wind projects are doing the same thing.  Us includes many businesses who have solar and/or wind power.  If there was a problem, I think it would have been noticed and complained about big time before now!  If you use a smart phone there are many more less trustworthy companies out there watching your every move already!

Oh, speaking of smart phones...  Last night on my way out of Geneva to go to the museum, I was on the road going North out of Geneva at a major intersection when I noticed the lady in the big SUV right behind me yacking on her phone...  At one point, since there was a long line at the intersection waiting for the light to turn green, she started to pull around me like I was blocking her from getting closer to to the light.  After we went through the intersection she hung up and put her phone on the seat...  I noticed in my rear view she was totally ignoring the road!  A few miles down the road she was back to talking on the phone and tailgating me.  I could also see in the mirror that the car behind her was also on the phone.  The car ahead of me put on his left turn signal to pull into his driveway.  I was a good distance behind him and slowed down accordingly.  Of course the lady behind me didn't notice as she was yacking on the phone.  She came right up to my bumper and slammed on her brakes.  I had to stop short of the car ahead.  No sooner did I stop when I heard "Crrupppnch!"  Nope not my bumper, the car behind me.  She braked hard and the guy on the phone tailgating her rear ended her.  I just kept going after the car ahead turned left.  The lady looked very shook up and upset......  Got to put the "Hang up and Drive Bumper Sticker on my car!  Sometimes there is justice!!!

Ken, I hope your toe is getting better.

Paul, you (and your family) are in my prayers during all this!

Curt, hang in there!  You folks are also in my prayers...

Ken, yep I was trying to post and it gave me an error as well.

Catch you all later!

Howdy ... Keep wondering about Ulrich. hope he returns very soon.

Curt ... Praying fir your family situation.

Remember the light bulb jokes? "How many people does it  take to change a light bulb?".....  Well, it's not funny to me anymore. A firend and I spent a long time trying to change the front turn signal bulb in Shelley's car.. Wow! After removing a zliion fasteners and screws from the front end, we still could not get into the dang thing!  I will have to take the car to a shop with a hoist and pay a mechanic to wok from under the car.

Yep. It's a rant.

Good Morning!

I am back!

It was a close call this time, but apparently He did not see it fit for me to stay with Him. I was out for over a week, but somehow got back. Fortunately, I don´t remember what happened - all I know is that my old ticker must have stopped. It needed a little more than a jumper cable to get it started again. Certainly, I don´t want that to happen again, as I don´t know how many of my nine lives I have spent so far.

I still feel weak sore all over. I will have to play a low key note in the coming months. It could mean, that I am eligible for early retirement, which would not improve our financial situation at all. At the moment I don´t want to think about it, I am just concentrating on getting back on my feet.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.

Morning Coffee in The Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Bill has provided the date.

Sometimes we have to "call a thing a thing". SO:

thing - an nameless object, subject, person, place, concept, thought, feeling, state, situation, etc :

thing is one of the most commonly used words in language, yet its origins are rarely considered, strangely, since they are very interesting. Thing is first recorded in English in the late 7th century when it meant a meeting or assembly. The assembly meaning equates to cognates (words of the same root) in old German ('ding') and ('ding' and later 'thing') in Norse (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), Frisian (Dutch) and Icelandic. The Viking age and Danelaw (Viking rule) in Britain from the 8th to the 10th centuries reinforced the meeting/assembly meaning of the word thing, during which time for example, Thing was the formal name of a Viking 'parliament' in the Wirral, in the North-West of England. Thingwall or Dingwall meant 'meeting field' in Norse, and was the root of Tynwald, the Isle of Man parliament, and Thingvellir, the Iceland parliament, now the Althingi. The village of Thingwall in the Wirral remains close to where the assembly met, and a nearby field at Cross Hill is thought to be the exact spot. A place called Dingesmere (literally 'assembly-marshland' - interpreted by some now to mean: 'assembly here, but be careful not to get stuck in the bog') features in poetic accounts of the 10th century victory of the Saxons over the Norse in the Battle of Brunanburh, which some historians say occurred in the same area of the Wirral. A Viking assembly also gave rise to the place name Dingwall in the Highlands of Scotland near Inverness. The word thing next evolved to mean matter and affair (being discussed at the assembly) where the non-specific usage was a logical development. (Intriguingly a similar evolution of the word was happening in parallel in the Latin-based languages, in which the Latin root word causa, meaning legal case, developed into the French word chose, and the Spanish and Italian word cosa, all meaning thing.) Thing in English later began to refer to objects and articles in the middle ages, around 1300. By the 1500s the meaning of thing had extended to include cause, reason, and similar notions. By the 1700s thing could be used for any tangible or intangible entity; literally 'anything', and this flexibility then spawned lots of variations of the word, used typically when a proper term or name was elusive or forgotten. The list of thing-word variations is long and still growing, for example: thingy/thingie, thingamy, thingamyjig, thingamabob, thingamadodger, thingamerrybob, thingamadoodles. There are maybe a hundred more. Thing-a-ling/ding-a-ling is a notable exception, referring euphemistically to a ***. This is far removed from the parliamentary origins of the word, although satisfyingly apt given what people think of politicians these days. Tracing the thing/ding words back much further, Cassells suggests the origin lies in the ancient Indo-European word tenk, meaning 'a length of time' (or more literally a 'stretch' of time), being the day of the assembly rather than the assembly itself. Tenk is also the root of a whole range of words derived from the notion of stretching or extending, for example: tend and tendency, thin, tenant, tenacity, tender (as in offer), tendon, tense, tension, and some argue the word tennis too.

GREAT to See ULRICH back!!!!

Good Morning All:

Ken, all that trepidation and Sue passed the stress test with no problem, that’s good news.  Sorry to hear your dead, LOL, what is Sue doing with all your train stuff?

Ulrich, you need to cut that out and stay healthy!  I’m glad to see you back in the diner and that you seem to have some good doctors watching over your health.

Garry, $9 at Lube Stop, take the new headlight with you.  Actually it only costs 50 cents if you figure the $8.50 you’ll spend on aspirin for all the headaches of changing it yourself.

Paul, thoughts and prayers for both of you until this whole mess is figured out!

Good morning. It's 68° with 93% humidity and patchy fog. It'll be partly cloudy today and the high will be 92°.

No plans for today except to stay in and stay off my feet as much as possible. Got a lot of movie watching to do. Started watching 'Titan a.e.' last night. I'll finish that up today then start in on something else. No layout work planned but something could crop up.

Weird, the forum shut down yesterday. But I actually did some modeling:

Modified the stock stewart tank to have something showing where the skirt was removed: This image is reduced by 22%, click it to view full size. This image is reduced by 22%, click it to view full size. This image is reduced by 22%, click it to view full size.
With the shell sitting on top: This image is reduced by 22%, click it to view full size.
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2331166 For some reason it looks kinda off to me, something about the gap seems strange. Looking at the proto photo, I think like the entire tank itself may be too low. It's in the stock location, so maybe the stewart tank sits too low.
What do you guys think about the gap between the tank/battery boxes and carbody?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good morning, Diners.  For some reason, I couldn't access the MR forum yesterday.  Looks like everything is fine today.

HI, Ulrich,  We missed you.  Glad to have you back.  Get well.

I wonder how Curt is doing.

MR meeting on Friday was on maintaining locos.  The couple who hosted the meeting have an outside MR that you can ride on.  Fun!  He has a huge HO layout in the basement.  It is a wonderful basement.

Later,  Sue

Good Afternoon Folks!

It feels good to be back. I am not yet up to speed, but feeling much better than a few weeks ago.

What happened yesterday? When I tried to log in again, the system would let me do so. System maintenance? I kept getting email notifications for posts awaiting moderation, but could not get in...

Spent the morning drafting up a plan for my friend Lothar´s new layout. His son will be moving out soon and he intends to use that room as a layout room, turning the basement into a workshop. I was able to persuade him to go for a change in system - from 3-rail AC based on Marklin´s infamous C-Track to regular 2-rail DCC.

Here is my plan for him:

Have a good day!

 Well, where back on line.

With the site being down, I as well got something done that I have been putting off for sometime. I finally got the Big Boy back on the rails. No derailment on short problems but still cannot get the headlight to work? Bang Head

Well, I am going back to work today. Toe still looks a little fat but color is completely normal looking again. Can't say I am looking forward to it.

Morning All,

Flo I would love a cup of coffee please.

Thank you all  for the prayers and well  wishes.

I am feeling better. No fever for 2 days but still have a bad sounding cough. I continue to take my antibiotics. I have also been trying to catch up on sleep.

My son is still at the psychiatric  facility and we have not heard from him so I'm not sure whats going on but  I pray he is getting the help that he needs.

Our fridge sprung a leak last week along with everything else that happened. It stopped when we shut off water to the ice maker so I need to try and replace that hose today.

Ulrich- I am glad you are doing better.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.
