Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a blackberry Danish please. Thank you.

Sunny. Highs in the lower 80s.

I heard they raised admission at the fair to $7 a head. I guess I save more than I though by getting in free.

SurpriseOh whew! I thought I missed something there. Thank goodness Ezra’s is still there. It’s kind of a, oh whatcha call it? Icon? No, monument? Oh I can’t think of the word. Something that is there, has been there and is expected to be there for like ever. You know, place wouldn’t be the same without it.

Have I mentioned how much I hate this mouse? It’s the IR pickup. The old corded mouse had IR and it worked smoothly on just about any surface including my pant leg. This one doesn’t even like to work on a solid surface half the time.  All jerky. I’m thinking about trying another one.

Hey, you’re right. Where is Rob from the deep south? Last I remember he wasn’t really up to par. And getting a bit worried about G. I know he bips out on his little trips without saying he’s gonna be gone, so not always concerned, but he hasn’t been feeling too hot lately either.

Lee- Actifed or it’s generic equivalent may help with Dorothy’s Phlem problemWhistling. It works for me. Brenda and I have found out that getting non squeaky and non stuffed toys keep us from picking up stuffing and pieces of squeeker spread out all over the living room like the thing exploded. I love that dog.

Jeff- Good job on the slug video. Couldn’t even see the thread used to pull it back and forth (chuckle). What is it that causes people to make comments about things? I mean really. Is it that important to them whether you made the thing work or not to call you out on it? Wonder if they do that to every person, and the world is full of them, that tells a tall tale (shakes head). Besides, you’d think they’d a learned by now when you say you’ve done something, you have and can prove it. No need for tall tales. No ego, self esteem, or needing to fit in boost needed at your placeYes. I guess they’re just living for the moment they can say “HAH!!! I knew it!”.  Maybe it’s they’re jealous because many “modeler’s”, like me (barely), take ready made pieces and parts and assemble them and you take pieces and parts from a pile of mismatched shtuff, a hobby knife some glue and make something from it. Grow up people.

Floor is doneYeah. Will replace the trim today so I don’t stick my fat toe in the grout while still soft. Maybe this afternoon after we get back from seeing my Chinese girls and weekly visit to Wally World.

LaughKinda looking forward to dinner today as things didn’t go so well in Chinatown last week. A-parent-leeeeeey, Suki was just a liiiiiittle too attentive and friendly for Brenda. Starting with her rushing up to seat us in her section grabbing the silverware while jabbering something to the hostess (they speak too fast for me to catch what few words in Cantonese I do know to even get a idea what they may be saying) saying to us “table ok today? No booth.” (Brenda made the observation there were booths, just not in her section) and culminating in her offer to get me more drink to go. Something she's never seen at a buffet, let alone this one. I said no thank you but Brenda said she would, to which Suki Wookey say “oh... Ok.” I didn’t hear the added “I guess”, but Brenda claims she did. Then brought her a styrofoam cup half full of soda because “what you have not e enough to fill. ” Stood there and watched her poor her drink in there. “See? Just right. hehe”. And then trotted off “Thank you bie bie.”  I said  see? Wasn’t that nice of her?. To which she responds, “she probably filled the glass with "Missa" Pibb.” (Brenda had Root Beer). I said no, she knew you had root beer”. Walking to the truck she takes a drink and said calmly…..”yup I knew it. She ruined my drink. I think she meant to.” I just chuckled. I love that place.Laugh

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Sometimes I wonder myself. I just like engineering things by eye and working without a prepared plan, no drawn out design, etc. Would it surprise you to know that I don't use a hobby knife? Or any kind of knife on my projects? A small pair of scissors, a small pair of wire snips and a Dremel with a diamond disk are the cutting tools I use.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Boy the dinner was slow today. Today was another do nothing day. Laid on the couch watching John Wayne Movies.

Did go to K-10 looking for a Loconet cable, he had none. Could only find one 6 pin telephone cable and it is 25 feet long for $13.00. I want to uses my PR 3 hooked to the computer to run trains using JMRI Pro Panel.

 See you all later.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, cup of coffee please, and thank you.

Well (still way down, toads and frogs have packed their bags and moved on) with an obligation-less Saturday, I finally got "serious" about trackplan w**k for the future RR. Since pencil and paper has gotten me nowhere but five kinds of crazy...I dug around until I found some old Code 100 track chunks. The following photo, posted for your amusement, is a rough 1:1 way of figuring out if I can, in fact, replicate the Chicago Central's ex-IC/ICG yard.

Sure 'nuff! I can get the west end of it, pretty much track-for-track. The crossed tracks at the top right are where the turntable would likely go. I won't have room for the full 75' of the prototype, but if'n I can find a way to turn the Atlas imagineered turntable into a bridge unit...I can squeeze a 9-incher in. The whole mess may shift "up" a few inches.

The paperwork at the bottom of the photo includes two contemporary shots by a guy named Buddy Burton, and a copy of an old Illinois Central track diagram of the area.

In other news, I've been dragged kicking and screaming (mostly AT the computer) into the world of the Mac user. Yup, I'm banging away on a new "iMac" thanks to the nearly nine-year-old PC having a multitude of issues. "You need an iMac" the wife said.

The result? I'm battling this thing, trying to get used to it's way of doing things...what seemed so easy on the PC is an arduous task on this "Apple Box." I keep hearing "you'll get used to it," and "you'll love it!." But hey...apparently even if I shoot it, Best Buy will replace it (once).

Best wishes to all in need, recovering, missing, etc.

Evening All,

Back from the club. I had several members compliment me on the M-1b weathering job that I did with Floquil Dirty Black (wheels/rods) and AIM powders on the shell. One member even asked if I could weather his M-1b. I have to say that made me feel pretty good.

I'm off tomorrow so I can sleep in a little. My sons court appearance is on Wednesday. I took Tuesday off so the only day I work is Monday this week.

Chris- I have actually thought many times that maybe N-scale was the way to go but it's too late now unless I win the loto.

Hope everyone has a great night and prayers for those in need.

Howdy .... I think the MIA list is getting too long. Perhaps we should have a Buddy system so we can contact everybody via emails. Hope everybdoy is okay.

Chris.... WHat yard is that? you said it was Chicago Central of the old IC Iowa line.

Todd .... Don't get in trouble at the Chinese restaurant.

Ken ... Speaking of John Wayne, Hollywood has not made a good movie since he died. I won't waste time with a recent movie.

Paul ... Praying your wife's bio[sy is favorable. Thanks for the remark about me.

Sue ... You too. Thanks for your comment. Hope the climbing went well.

Curt ... You deserve compliments on your weathering, and I'm glad to hear you got some. Thanks for your remark on my sleeper car.

Ray ... Looks like you will actually build the challenging building. Good !

Barrry ... I hope you are doing okay, and the treatment was successful.

Lee .... Dorthy is a ...what? .... Did you have to learn to spell "phlebotomist" before she would go out with you? ... Don't ask Ken to spell it.

Jeff ... Praying for your Mom. Enjoyed the video.

Flip .. I'm glad you keep posting.

Rob ... What is new on the farm?

I'm still trying to get back to normal. Still not there.

I did work at the work table on my Bachmann GE 44T. Installing a decoder is very tedious, and I am not done yet. The locomotive is not even close to being DCC ready. It is the early production model with two motors. Each power truck had to be dis-assembled. Then I had to solder tiny wires on tiny metal tabs. They are mounted on plastic pieces which soften immediately with heat. There are 2 brush holders for each motor held onto plastic frames. I wrecked part of the frame which softened with the heat. It took hours to rebuild it with plastic pieces and super glue. Then I had to re-mount the very tiny brush.  I was afraid the brush would  fall to the floor, and get lost, but fortunately it did not.  As now stand the power trucks are back together and test okay with regular DC power. Next, I can complete wiring and also wire in the decoder.

Happy Model railroading

Gooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, I'll grab a RBF.

GARRY: THAT would be the yard in Cedar Rapids.

The layout is a little simpler than this 1960s (estimated) era diagram.

BARRY: Yeah buddy....space is even more of an illusion than time! I knew going in I'd only get a small part of a small yard. Had I gone with N-sane scale, I figure I would've gotten just shy of half. Z or half-Z scale is what I'd need to get the full length in.

CURT: Yeah...I know the feeling (too heavily invested in HO to dump it all and switch to N-sane scale). I've only been collecting this stuff since '85Whistling

From this:

I'll have to try and figure some rough measurements, so I can plan on how to scratch build this thing. Can't go and measure it, it's long gone.

Along the left side in the overhead photo will be part of the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. 6th St. Generating Station and it's substation.

I figure I can get by with a 9-inch turntable since it only needs to handle one unit.

The way this design process is going, I may just start hammering away at the CCP yard, get it functional (along with the staging yard in my office) then proceed from there.

Or, I may just make a big pile in the backyard, light it up (burn ban be danged!) and go collect stamps or beer cans or some such.

Jeffry Wish your Mother a quick recovery, and prayers for her and the family. Ken Have you got the blister/infection under control. This is a concern everytime I clip my legs enough to draw blood. Loosing weight and metformin have kept me off insulin so far. Lee Were you ever stationed in Maine, or was most of your service on the Lakes? Has been very humid and in the mid to upper 80s here, we recieved 1 3/8 inch of rain overnight, and at present we are recieving a light rain. The Texas Flying Museum has an air show at the Wiscasset Airport tomorrow, and hope the weather clears for that. They have the last flying Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a B-25, F4-U Corsair, P-51D, and a P-40 Warhawk with the AVG insignea from 1940. The last time I was around any of the fighters was the week following VJ Day in 45. Dad was one of the supervisors at McDonald Aircraft in St.Louis with the B-17 program, and they had an incredible air show at the field there. I will never forget a flight of 8 P-38s doing a power dive over the field and the noise the turbochargers made when they were cut in. Have gone back to square one with the layout, and have started replacing turnout switches with Shinohara, and using under table switch motors. The other ones that I have are just too tired to work properly. I never know if the engine will make it past the switch, or will arbitrarily start down the turnout. Lobster prices are $2.25 a pound to the boat, The last I sold was in January of 68, and I got 2.50 a pound. There is a glut on the market, Canada has 13 processors, and the Canadian fishermen have boycotted so much that 9 have been closed. Maine sends around 60% of it's catch North to be processed, and this year there are so many being caught that the bottom has dropped out of the market pricewise. With the cost of bait and fuel being so high many of the boats don't leave the dock. Lobsters are a favorite food for Codfish, the Cod stocks have diminished, and the lobster population has exploded. Very much enjoy the pictures that are posted--- Prayers to all those in need. Herrinchoker

Get that looked into quick! I sometimes have chest pain so bad people think I'm having a heart attack - including me. So far it's always turned out to be cramps or gall stones. Never thought a gall stone could bring a person to their knees until I had a bad one.Black EyeDead

It does sound like you got a problem there. I learned a long time ago not to try taking keys away from a woman who's bent on hanging onto them, especially if she's armed herself with a skillet or a baseball bat!

Morning all.

Started out the day with a 57 degree temp. I love it. Supposed to hit the mid 80's today.

Got the laundry done. Now debating whether I wash the car today...or not. LOL. Yesterday I found the guidelines for Free-Mo modules. I am thinking about building some modules even though I know of no Free-Mo groups close by. That way I have something to work on and run trains. Being that we may move near the end of the year, maybe we will end up somewhere that does have a Free-Mo group. I am not a mainline guy. I grew up around branchlines and that is what I know and love, so the modules will most likely be branchline.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup, bacon, and dark roast coffee in the R&GV RR mug please (and Thank You!).

BarryBarry?  You OK?  Sure hope he was typing while waiting for the ambulance!  My prayers that he is OK!

Still no word from Galaxy either....  Couple people here to worry about today I guess....

I hope to finish the basic wall structure to be used to make a mold today.  I also will be finishing gluing down the roadbed for the upper staging.  I hope to get it installed Wednesday when a friend comes over (he says I owe him lunch....) for the day.  He is one of our Division Officers and just received his MMR from the NMRA.  Need to do some major house cleaning before then also........  You all know what a neatnik I am. Whistling

Chris, finally came over to the bright side of computing I see...... Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh  I can tell you it took me 3 months to get all the settings on my new iMac switched back to "Computer" from iDevice settings.  My suggestion to you is to can the "Magic Mouse".  The only thing "Magic" about it is it makes things disappear and takes you to obscure placers in the realm of clouds and intergalactic space dust......  I cured that by spending another $30 and buying a Logitech mouse that actually acts like a computer mouse instead of an iPad screen or something.  In "system Preferences" you can change most everything to work correctly for you and it will make the learning curve much easier......  I have been using the Mac since the mid 1990's and found Lion to be the worst thing Apple has ever done.....  I hear Mountain Lion is even worse!  It seems that both PC's and Apple are pushing the new systems to look and feel as unusable as the so called "Smart*** Phones"  At least the Mac side allows you to change the settings to have it operate more like the old fashioned now passé Antique computers of a few years ago........  That all said, I now love the iMac and find it is very quick and powerful.  Have fun!

Later!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the SUNDAY Breakfast BUFFET! Please. Thank you.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84

Yesterday was a splendid day. Got nothing done I wanted to, but did enjoy a leisurely stroll around Menard’s, Lowe’s and of course Walmart, as opposed to a mad dash to get what I need to get back home and get something done. Nice.

Jeff-  Nope it does not surprise me you don’t use a knife. Actually I know you don’t. You said one time that you should not use an item that so easily cuts due to the lack of feeling in your hands and also the lack of steadiness. I believe you described the work area as having the potential of looking like the sight of a mass murder before you realized you were even cut.

Chris- Good to see you got some time to pop in. Great to see you got to put some track to the table. Even if it is just a mock up. Hey, seeing that kinda gets the juices flowing more than paper eh? OK. Now I am gonna say this and I know what you’re gonna say. My problem too. Ok, here goes…… listen close....

Oh Barry!- Praying it’s something simple like anxiety.

Garry- Nope all was well in International Buffet. Got a different waitress, Jenny’s her name, (I wonder if they pick their names or are assigned one when they hire on) she is a good waitress, older, and gave an absolutely stunning display of how she eats rice and steamed clams a couple three weeks ago. I don’t think she chews.

Jenny is very nice, but is far less friendly, and most are, as the one they call Suki. Probably because all the English she knows is the names of the drinks and that DR Pepper is the same as Mr Pibb, and of course the other matches though it seemed one time she had no idea what lemonade was and just smiled at them, you finish?, Thank you real much (her apparent favorite), and of course, You pay now?Laugh She is the one Brenda has trouble with because she tries to talk to her like she would anyone and then there are problems with what she gets.

Brenda cannot ask her what the Chinese writing says on the pictures anymore because she tells her.... in Chinese. Then after a few seconds of exchanging blank looks, she says, no speak English. Though I'm sure that's not what the picture really says, but hey, what do I know.

I had to explain to Brenda ( 2 separate times) that when she asks you what you want to drink, answer for you and don’t confuse her by adding what I want. She, Jenny, will ask me and then we will get the same thing and good luck trying to get her to understand what happened. She thinks you are saying it is wrong and she will bring you the same “wrong” thing right back because, well, after all she asked what you wanted and you did say Mr Pibb and I don’t know how to say “she changed her mind” in Cantonese because that’s the easiest way to explain. It’s actually quite funny watching Brenda “talk” to her which though being grounded from it will forget few and far between and say something to herLaugh. We actually get her about half the time anymore.

Enough of the Chinese buffet. Today is Veterens Day at the Illinoyz State Fair yeehaw. Soon as my blushing bride of 4 million years gets a movin, we will go……walk around and……. well…..eat….stuff. Bout all we do besides gawk.

Oh Chris- forgot. The word is…..selective compression. Very hard for me to do.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

  Morning All,

1000 AM and the temp is 80 expected high 101.

Chest pain and heart attacks can be very wierd. My heart attack in 2004 was so mild all I had was a slight kink in my left sholder. It woke me up though and while trying to get tthe kink out, my wife noticed I was rubbing my left arm. She took me to emergency and 12 hours later they did a double by-pass. I would never have gone if she did not insist. Chest pain now is usually a muscle ache.

Supposed to have a friend come over and look at my travel trailer to see if he wants to buy it, but wife is not feeling well so I will have to postpone it for now.

I think if I get the chance later I will take and post some pics of what I call my layout.Laugh It is actually going to be a part of something bigger when it gets moved to the dinning room that is not used as such.

Prayers for Jeff's mom, Garry, Barry Ken, Galaxy, and anyone else I missed.

Printed some simple decals for the slug this morning. They're not good qualiy, in fact they're right at the upper limit of what my POC printer is capable of doing with decal paper, that is besides rolling it up around the drum or smashing it into a crumpled ball. Anything heavier than 'Fast Draft' results in the ink crazing as it dries and resembling dried mud. But they'll have to do until I can get something better. My only other printer is an old LexMark Z33 that's made to plug into an LPT port, something newer computers no longer have. I couldn't afford to use it anyway as the ink cartridges cost plenty.

Gooooood Afternoon,

Geech, BARRY sure knows how to perk a guy's ears up! Hope all is well, and the pain was something minor like a muscle pull.

RAY: Oh joy. Oh rapture. I agree on the "magic mouse," I may yet see how well it sails across the room.... I'm not too thrilled with the itty-bitty keyboard either. I'm a bit more comfortable with how the iMac wants to do things...or should I say, how IT wants ME to do things?

TODD: "Selective Compression." Yeah....I've heard of THAT. Right now, I'm about "selectively compressed" to where the Quaker Oats plant is about the size of a shoe box. SighBang HeadDunceGrumpy

On a more positive note, I've knocked-together two walls of a mock-up for THAT "freight station." It's "selectively compressed" a bit, but still looking like the real thing. I'm going to have to dig through a bunch of negatives to see if I've got anything showing the back wall and the east side. By fluke, in the background of a locomotive shot, I found enough of the east side to get a start on it.

This is just one more thing I should've taken dozens if not hundreds of pictures of back "in the day." I had the foolish view of ignorant youth THAT "it'll be here tomorrow." Well, "tomorrow" came some years back, it was demolished and replaced with a small metal shed.

JEFF: I'm liking the "slug," and THAT rusty tin shed you posted yesterday. Good stuff!

Have a good day everybody, thoughts and prayers continue for all in need. Might need to get a "dah tah peppah."

Good afternoon. ....... Don't forget the forum is out for maintenance tomorrow.

Slowly getting back to normal. Was able to attend church. Good day for that. it was "Crock Pot Sunday". (Pot luck after church.) Good food.

Chris ... My friend here is a retired IC locomotive engineer from the Iowa Division and he would be very familiar with the Cedar Rapids yard. He returns to Iowa occasionally to see family memebrs. He says the model train store is owned by a woman. Perhaps you know which one.

Todd ..... I suspect the reason why Chinese restaurants typically have buffet is the problem with communication. It is hard enough to get the drink order correct. Ordering the main course would be stressful.

Speaking of Chinese restaurants and being stressful ..... Several years ago, we went to one, and it had either buffet or menu items. We selected buffet, and the food was so terrible we could not eat it. We complained and ordered off the menu instead. We ate the menu stuff which was not good. Later our check came, and we were charged for both. We objected and we said we would pay for only the menu items. The Chinese lady then called the police because we were stealing food from the buffet she sad. The cop came and remarkable sided with the Chinese lady. We paid for both and departed. We did not tip. We seldom go to Chinese restaurants after that. ..... I like Mexican food better anyhow.

Wondering about Barry, Galaxy, Ulrich, and several MIA's. Again, I think we should have a buddy system to contact outside the forum to check up on those with unexpected absences.

Tomorrow, I am celebrating. .... Four years ago, I had serious problem with my heart rhythm. My heart stopped six times and was re-started. The helicopter flew me to Nashville, TN. I would not be alive without the miracles of modern medicine. Those 4 years mean a lot to me.  In two of the times my heart stopped, I had near-death experiences, and I know we all have something awaiting us when our bodies die ..  Praise the Lord.

Happy Model Railroading

Evening All,

MOH was out with our daughter today doing women stuff like nails, etc. I added some weathering to the buildings on the Engine addition. I think it came out OK. At least now the roofs are not just Grey. I go to w**k tomorrow but it's only one day this week.

I was running trains today and I think Mr. Murphy arrived at my house from Ken's. My M-1b just would not go onto or off the TT without derailing (not normal) but would run through the yard fine. My K4s would run onto and off the TT with no problems but kept dying in the yardBang Head. I cleaned the track and switches on the track the  K4s was using and then it would work fine. Then I noticed the main yard switch (entrance) was not closing all the way (never had a issue with it). I am ready for Mr. Murphy to go visit someone else.Whistling. At that point I turned off the layout before it blew up.

Ray- I meant too tell you yesterday that the building is going to look great. I just don't have the patience or the hands for something like that.

Before

After

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.
