Afternoon All,
I was supposed to get off w**k this morning at 1 AM but because of a late call it was 2:30 instead. Don't ask me how I got home because I just kind of arrived. Haven't done much for the 4th other than the normal stuff like laundry and cleaning house. Later we are going to have Ribs, Potato Salad and pie.
Today I painted the marker lights on my steamers for a little more realism. I was upset for a while. I found the 2 stall engine house with a cracked wall. It looked like someone had accidentally hit it with something. Accidents happen but tell me about it.
Ulrich- What a nice surprise.
Tom- Hope you're feeling better.
Ken- It's great to see you are home. We all missed you.
JR- Great job on the buildings.
Jeff-That would of been too funny.
I forgot who posted the HO bridge photo but it was awesome
Hope everyone has a great 4th of July and that everyone stays safe. Prayers for those in need.

Hi Guys
Current temps here are 93F but feeling like 113F, makes me kind of want winter. Needless to say I have stayed indoors all day. I woke up this morning feeling sick to my stomach but that has passed for the most part just feeling a little off at the moment. I was going to work on some weathering today but I may just lay down and watch TV for the night
Afternoon Fellow Dinners.
Flo, Lemonade please if a frosted Monon Mug.
Well I am not missing but man the cigarettes is a different story. I have fell off the wagon. Went 6 days with out smoking while in the hospital. Would take a unopened pack and go to the smoking area but never opened it. When I got home, there was a opened pack on the desk, you can take it from there. I hope when I am out and will stop again. By the way, pleases No Ken You Got To Stop Reply's.It is a personal struggle and I will win.
Traveling Nurse just left. Show me how to do my I V's here at the house. Sue lost it, she just could not follow what was going on and started crying. While it is somewhat complicated I should be able to do it in the next couple of days by myself.
Vince's A Pick Line or Pick Block is where there are ports that are hooked to a vein in my arm. That way I don't have to be stuck everyday to get my med's.
Work Front, well I may be out of work! My request through FLMA was declined! Seems that I have to be on the job for a year before I am covered! I received a letter stating that if I am not back to work by the 07-06-12 I will be terminated! Doctor wants me off for another 4 weeks? I will call Thursday and see if there is any leeway in there decision. To be honest I really don't want to go back except I hoping to get the house loan modified.
Not nearly as chatty with out beer, so I will see you folks later.

Gooooooooooooooooood afternoon and Happy Independence Day! Thank you to the kind folks from other parts of the world who have wished our nation a Happy Birthday.
JEFF: I do believe your rooster vs. rocket story is the funniest thing I've read today. Kudos, Sir. The icing on the cake? The rooster attacking the dead rocket!
CUDAKEN: Welcome back! Glad you're keeping all of your parts, hoping it stays THAT way. I'm not gonna say anything about you and the lung rockets...someday I "should" kick 'em too.
SAWYER: Good to see you back in here, and for helping the kid. THAT could end up being a very rewarding experience for you both.
TODD: You (and Missy) have far, far, far more restraint than I would've. "Family" or not...my boot would've been up somebody's posterior! Sounds like you got a visit from "Cousin Eddie" from the Vacation movies.
With a reduced hours week at w**k, I was able to make some progress on CRANDIC 97, an Athearn blue box SW-7 being passed-off as an SW-1200 with the addition of some additional grab irons and eventually full-length handrails on the side sills. Yes, it "looks" like a Union Pacific loco...unfortunately the CRANDIC did gray over yellow from the start of its dieselization. But, the gray is lighter than "Harbor Mist Gray (UP gray)," and the yellow is "reefer yellow" rather than Uncle Pete's "Armour Yellow." Rest assured good friends, this is the ONLY yellow and gray locomotive THAT will grace my rails!
And here is the desired result:
There have been some incredible photos posted in here lately, .
Greetings and salutations to the lot of you, best wishes continue for all in need. Have a good and SAFE 4th of July, and remember what this day is supposed to be about: independence, freedom from tyranny and over-reaching...well (way down, frogs and toads NOT happy), maybe I oughta just have a seat at the Rivet Counter for an RBF...

Heartland Division CB&Q We continue enjoying the grandkids. Yesterday, 8-year old caught 5 1/2 pound catfish about 24" long. That was one of about 8 catfish caught. She is left-handed and used the left-handed rod and reel.Meanwhile, the 11 year old grand daughter says she only wants to do catch-and-release fishing because she does not want to kill any animal including fish. .... We are doing more lake stuff today. Tomorrow we take them to Mammoth Cave.

Your story reminded me of our daughter. When she was 5 1/2 y.o. we were camping with my SIL and her husband and he took our daughter out in their boat fishing. She caught a fish. She named it Shelly, but had no problem with inviting it to dinner. My BIL cleaned and cooked the fish and our daughter and her brother ate it for supper. Apparently Shelly tasted really good. Now, she is long since grown up and living on a farm and she is taking wilderness courses which include how to clean fish as she and her partner like to go wilderness camping.

Hi Ken,
Good to see you back, My wife also had a pick line when she was going through chemo. She hated the thing with a passion but it saved her from having to be poked with a needle all the time and after a while she got used to it.
She had that thing in for close to 4 years while getting treatments. It has been out now for close to 4 years and she has just a small scar there now.
Also your employer wont give you a leave of absence? I find it cruel that they were terminate you knowing what you are going through. I guess it shows how some company value there employees
Diners,
I know this is a rookie question but I have been thinking of getting some Kadee uncoupling magnets for the back of the layout. I have Kadee couplers on my equipment. I decided to try a cut up a fridge magnet. I ran a loco with a car over it and stopped them. I then changed direction and moved the loco and the car went with it.
So the question is do I need to do something else to uncouple the car or is the magnet just not strong enough?
Thanks
Rain! Rain! Blessed rain has come!

The average fridge magnet isn't strong enough. Most uncoupling magnets I used in the past had a metal intensifier plate on the back side to intensify the magnetic force on the other side. You'd do better with a neodymium (rare earth) magnet.

Well, I'm working and good, that's the reason why its been a while since I've popped in. glad to see that Ken's back.
Been driving to Mantino from Elwood about 3 times this past week, I've got today, tomorrow and Friday off, on Monday I have a job on the west side of Joliet where it's replacing a deck. Glad I bought a new drill. One of those nice Milwaukee ones with the flashlight and battery meter.

CURT- Not a rookie Q..but Fridge magnets aren't very strong..in fact some of them you are lucky to get them to even do what they are supposed to do...stick to a fridge! Do as Jeffrey Says and get stronger magnets, OR order the real MC Coy! {or is that Mac Coy? or MCOY?}
SAKEL: Well the rain here came with big boomers and lightning adn made water all over everything. Hopefully some of it sank in and didn''t just run off! Only lasted about an hour! Now the Hum-did-ity is myohmy up there!
JEFFREY- FIreworks are illegal here in NY and I am glad of it... Across the border in PA they have a fireworks store just begging to sell off to NYers. I am pleased they are illegal here, but last night and today they have beeing ilegally fired off.Last night there was a ruckus across the street and down the road tha the cops wer called for..adn still people set off fireworks! guess cops to busy with the issue at hand....The 4th is the busiest night at the Emergency ROom filled with stupid people blowing body parts off, I guess you neighbor is lucky he didn't blow anything off!.
KEN- 'nuff said 'bout the ciggies...you willl have more money for house payment and trains, though, when you succeed {notice I didn't say "IF"} When we quit they were $20 a carton and we each went through 5 cartons a month...$200 saved was a GREAT asset to the savings account...now MOH has slipped and it costs me aobut $10 a week for one pack...that is ALL MOH gets! Hopefully MOH will quit again. MOH wantst o go places so I am working the "if you quit again we can afford to go routine...it seems to be setting in.
Speaking of going places we will be going day tripping to some new {to us} steam train runs!! But we may make it overnights. WE are waiting for MOH's mileage checks to come for working at anotjher store...that will pay for our overnighter! Taking Trian nut friend with us.
The 12th is our 10 year anniversary, 12 years together, 10 years "officially". WE will be celebrating that the following week on our trips! WE are going to try for a renewal of vows on the 12th, if we can get a few people lined up!
Well, 2 hours till permitted professional fireworks on TV....maybe a nap till then to be awake for them..MOH went to bed with alarm set, I will probably join in shortly. Us "old folks" need such naps ocassionally.
HAve a good evening and enjoy the fireworks IF allowed in your area!
Tomorrow is another day!

Gonna be goin' to New Orleans tomorrow to go to the WWII museam, no hereing from me. Good night ya'll.
Evenin' folks!
Janie just a tall glass of lemonade please.... way to hot still for coffee tonight!
Here it is 11PM and the temp outside is still 79°F. Yeah, I know you Southern folks have that often this time of year. But up here by now it should be in the high 60's or lower.
I got quite a bit done on the layout today. Almost have the lower staging tracks wired. Would have except I put aside a control panel that I used on the old staging area that had some LED red and green bipolar lights on it. I will now be only using one turnout rather than two for each track, but will use a tortoise on each level of staging to control power to the track. The pair of SPDT toggles in one tortoise will send power to one rail on each of the two tracks and will be hooked up with another tortoise to throw the turnout and power the frog.... The track will have power only when the turnout is thrown for that track. Only problem is when I took the panel out I put it away where I could find it to use later, and I can't!
Hope everyone has a safe and good night!

Hey all of you guys and girls south of the border!
Happy belated 4th of July! Sorry I am slow on the draw - had to work last night.
Jeffrey - you should start a tv show with all of the stuff that goes on around your place!
A long time ago when I was a teenager I had the opportunity to visit Sweden through the Air Cadet exchange program. One of the highlights of the trip was held at an Air Force base in the south of Sweden. We were given fireworks rockets - the old fashioned kind with the stick sticking out of the bottom. We had to load them into a device which held the stick and light them, aiming at a string of balloons about 50 ft away! What a blast!!! Literally!! We were covered in soot (white shirts and dress slacks etc.) and our faces were black! We even managed to hit a couple of balloons! Then we had to go for dinner as guests in the Officers' Mess! Everybody laughed, including our very generous hosts.
Thanks for reminding me!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good Morning All,
About the same as yesterday, 60's and humid with some clouds about. finally rained last night after dark but threatened all day.
Curt, That is one gorgeous turntable and roundhouse you've built. Very nice. I agree with the rest about the fridge magnets not having enough oomph.
Gotta run - lots to do again J.R.
I hope everyone still has the same number of fingers and toes they had on the 3rd….
We are getting pounded again this morning by thunderstorms. Looks like the middle of the night outside.
Ohio, it is legal to buy and sell fireworks but it’s illegal to shoot them off.
Curt, the guys are correct refrigerator magnets won’t do it and I haven’t found any of the magnets at the box stores that will fit between the rails. If cost is an issue I would use a coupler pick. You might think your saving money on non-MRR magnets until a $25 boxcar does a summersault.

Ulrich- Very nice Thank You gift. Bet it was nice to see the nieces and nephew. Great looking kids and those girls are beautiful. Why if I was about 30+ years younger I’d be selling everything I had to to get a ticket over there.
Barry- I’m with Jeff on the subtitles. Would be hilarious.
Galaxy- You are correct (you don’t need me to say that but it seemed the thing to say). Many languages do not have the same words we do. We have a word for just about everything, sometimes several. Probably the languages that use the least words as we see it are those such as Native Americans and East Asians. They just don’t have words for everything we do like the word Morning comes to mind. It may be a phrase such as “when the light comes” or “darkness is no more”. Saying hello in Mandarin Chinese, for example, is literally translated as “are you good” which of course can be used for several meanings depending on what the context of the sentence is. If you were to have three different translaters separately translate that phrase in the same sentence, you could get three different phrases. All meaning the same thing but different such as “Hello”, Good Morning” or maybe even “How are you” all would be appropriate when greeting someone say at 9 am at a coffee shop. The translator has no way of knowing what the speaker intended to say and quite frankly, neither does the speaker in our language. They all however pretty much mean the same thing and are not wrong. They say English is one of the hardest languages to learn because of that very thing. Well that and all our rules that only apply to the words they apply to. I bet Jeff could come up with a few doozies translating from Cherokee to English given the right phrase.
Jim- Oh Missy got her treat alright. She also slept most all the next day she was so worn out. As for will she remember? (Brenda that is) Yes she will. Will she say anything? Mmmm, probably not. Worst part is I probably won’t either. I am too nice. I talk a lot and sit and seethe, but I couldn’t just say “um…no. If the dog comes, you stay elsewhere.” Of course you can push me too far, and you never know just how far too far is, or what mood I'll be in when the subject comes up, so really you never know what I’ll say or when I’ll say enough.
Curt- This is the one place you can ask a “rookie question” or even a question that has been “asked and answered a million times” and know you'll get an answer and NOT get chastised for it.
Ethanol in gas? I prefer it. Raises octane and keeps the water in the tank down. No need for Heat or any of those gas antifreeze things dumped in the tank. Plus a number of other benefits. Straight gas is hard to come by here anymore. I’ve not heard of the lower power thing as long as the ratio is 10% or less.
Don’t know what I’ll get involved in today but time WILL tell. Have to w**k tonight so that should be a sauna at what 102 in a small kitchen with two pizza ovens at 550 and no AC. Temp gets to 110 sometimes when it’s real hot out. Needless to say we don’t lean over the food when it’s like that .
Ya’ll have a good day!!!!
Morning All,
Got several errands to run today and have grocery shopping to do later. Other than that nothing much planned, but they will keep me busy today.
Jeff- Thanks for the input last night.
Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.
Morning Dinners!
Flo, Coffee pleases.
I think this will be our 8th day in a row where we broke 100 degrees! Dang you think I was living in Arizonan! Looks like Sunday will be the first 90 degree day. Looks like we will have 3 days of rain as well. Yard sure needs it.
Herring Choker I asked a few months ago about the electronic cigarettes but got no reply's. My wife and I know a few people that have been using them and 1 has stopped smoking outright. If I can afford one I will give it a try. Cost is about the same, I drive to Missouri to buy them (14 miles) and a carton is $22.00.
Days With Out Well it is day 8 and I not really missing it. Trains are a little bit more enjoyable with but still fun with out.
Doctors only want me to check my blood sugar 2 times a week? That seems odd to me! Traveling nurse called last night and said that is what the orders say's.
Well, time to

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes w/ Maple Syrup, a side order of breakfast sausage, and my usual dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug. Please and Thank You Ma'am!
Relatively nice outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning... Currently 74°F with a high this afternoon in the low 80's... We could sure use some liquid sunshine though! Even the weeds have stopped growing! I know, Maybe if I got to w*rk and waterproof the deck it will precipitate......... I do have to get THAT done soon.
I have a bunch of odds and ends planned for the day including a trip to the recyclers, my allergy shot, and checking out what I need to buy to start painting the deck. Hopefully I will be able to find the missing board I was looking for yesterday among all the other stuff to do.....
Later!
[edit] Looks like lunch is on me today, so go easy!
