Good morning. It's 66° and partly cloudy. The high will be 82°.I got news late yesterday that a distant relative of mine is rebuilding an old truck that until recently was holding up his backyard shed that was leaning against it. Today he's supposed to start on pulling the engine. He's going to try rebuilding it. As far as he knows it has a cracked crank shaft. I wish him luck. He has a big job ahead of him. It's a twelve cylinder Packard of the same type that was used in the WW2 PT boats. Where he intends to get parts, I don't know. Packard went the way of the dodo in '58.I have no idea what I'll be doing today. I'm fresh out of project locos until I find some more parts. I guess today I'll be watching some movies and watching the trains run. It's quite rewarding to watch something you created from junk box parts do what you intended it to do. Yesterday I got a surprise. I had just started on adding weight to a wide vision caboose. I hadn't taken more than a glance at it since I found it packed in amongst a box full of donated freight cars. It looked like a Bachmann wide vision caboose so that's what I regarded it as though I'd never seen one from them in Conrail. Well yesterday I turned it over and looked at the bottom for the first time and discovered that it's an Athearn model. Then I started noticing things like metal handrails and ladders instead of plastic. Right now it's at the end of a string of sixteen freight cars and still in Conrail paint as #22140.

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a raisin Bran Muffin with real butter and a cup (or 3) of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug. Please and thank you Ma'am.
Huh? What? Just a second Todd, I missed what you said.... Let me turn the hearing aids on! Many years ago when my Father made out his will, he asked me to be the executor of the estate. He did so because Sister #1 lived in Florida and it would be difficult for her to be back and forth to handle it, sister #2 had just gone through a messy Divorce (second one) and he didn't think she was in any state to be able to handle it. Sister #2 threw a hissy fit and accused Dad of being sexist and figured that she knew much more than her little baby brother..... Dad responded by making us all co-executives. When my Father died, Sister #1 was living in South Bend, Ind. with a husband dieing of cancer... She said she would go along with however we wanted to do things. Sister #2 said she didn't know what to do.... She and I cleaned out the house (we're talking a 20 yard dumpster just to clean out the outside junk and part of the house). I was to handle all the financial stuff (the stuff the executor does....) We all verbally agreed to just split whatever was left 3 ways and call it even. It was supposed to be split by the amount of $ we had paid for the house which dad kept impeccable basically meaningless records for. Legally it didn't mean anything. Guess which sister threw a hissy fit because she had given our parents more money??? So I sat down and spent several days going through every receipt and doing the math. Final result? Sister #1 got the same amount she was going to get. Sister #2 got a couple hundred more, and I got a couple hundred less. Sister #2 was upset that the difference came out of what I got. She was hoping to screw over Sister #1 whom she doesn't like because the Rev. won't sit and just listen to sister #2s bull.
Oldest sister didn't want anything from the house. She ended up with a fairly valuable antique set of dishes my mom took with her when she went out to live (that ended 3 months later as Sister #1 couldn't take dealing with her). Sister # 2 got anything she wanted.... I got what was left.... Some things I did want (couple items of antique furniture, etc.) and all the too important to throw away valuables (like the Michlob bottle covered with elbow macaroni and sprayed with gold paint one of my mom's customers gave her for Christmas 40 years ago.....) which are still carefully packed in boxes in the closet in an unused bedroom. This Summer I plan to finally clean out and fill my little dumpster with most of it!
Todd, have fun with all the nonsense!
Looks to be a fairly decent day here in the Finger lakes. I will be going to my doctor's appt. early this afternoon and then dealing with loose odds and ends for the MLK Dinner.

Morning guys
Well I did it again. I stepped on another [expletive] nail. I'm up to date on my tetanus shots, so I don't think a doctor's visit is neccesary.
So far I've vaccumed my mother's Edge. Despite the fact it's an SUV it gets 24 mpg running around town, and is rated for 265 hp, out of a V6. I still wish we got the ecoboost version just in case we need to pull a big trailer.
Ken, Personally, I'd try calling Walthers becuase they take a few days to anwser emails. Were the dummy stewarts you mentioned dummies, or did they have the motors removed?
Darren, there is room for a layout in there. Maybe something to try if I win the lottery
Ray, I'm glad I only have one sister. One is enough to drive someone nuts...
Jeff, we are pretty much in the same boat today. It's just I have projects and time to finish them, just not the parts (hard to find some of them). Problem is I keep blowing money on new projects when I should finish the old ones.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

"Despite the commonplace assumption, the new-generation Packard marine engine, initially tagged the 4M-2500, was anything but a re-popped Liberty. Instead, Vincent, Packards lead engineer, started with a clean sheet and designed a four-stroke, 60-degree V-12 with an aluminum block with a bore of 6.04 inches and a 6.50-inch stroke, which brought it to 2,490 cubic inches. Weighing 2,900 pounds, the 4M-2500 had four valves per cylinder, a 6.4:1 compression ratio, and a centrifugal supercharger, later models were also fitted with an intercooler. A Holley 1685F aircraft carburetor supplied the fuel, 100-octane gasoline, fired by two spark plugs per cylinder. The first engines developed 1,200hp, but improved versions with higher boost levels nominally made 1,500hp. Packard built 14,000 marine engines during the war, three of which went into each of the Navy's 768 PT boats, two astern and one amidships for better service access. "
From what is above, I really doubt the truck engine is the same as the PT boat used as it was designed as a marine engine from the start. One site said that Packard stopped making trucks in 1922 and except for some Packard cars custom-converted into trucks for dealers there were no more Packard trucks after that year.

Well, errands day adn lots of fun stuff.
Went to the cable company..they offered us a BETTER package than the one we had, except this one come with the phone service AND a DVR! SO we have the HDTV package with hundreds of channels and a phone to boot. Now if they can just give us a derned NASA-sized instruction manual for the DVR unit... We won't use the phone much, we only have 2 friends who are local-long distance, but they boht have cable phones so they usually call us back so we can talk freely. Oh, and it gets BETTER...the new package is STILL a few dollars SMALLER than the package we just had, which was cheaper than the old 71 channels we had then! We WON'T give up the land line, though! It works when power is out, and I get a medical discount for it! I was right, they would offer us a last minute offer to keep us as a higher-payer subscriber, BUT you only get that deal when you show up at the office with the box in hand for a turn in! SO now we have turbo boost Internet, phone and HDTV some-odd-hundreds of channels all for less thatn we were paying for regular 'net and some-hundreds-odd channels!
WEnt to a nearby Credit Union to open accounts I do not live/work/worship in Broome county, and Tioga where we live is NOT included, but MOH works in Broome so we can join. As we are married, I get to flow in on MOH's tails... Not ready to give up on our bank yet as they do offer free services and are closer than the CU, but we have a foot in the door at the CU for better rates. So we may dwindle down our bank use.
MOH had orms to drop off at the dental clinic showing "we is po' folks" {we is SOOOOOOO poor, we can't afford to buy the other "O " and the "R"!}, and deserving of a discount for services rendered...I get my coverage through Medicaid.
Then we went to our bank to do a few tricks there too and get some ready cash as we put other cash on hand into the CU.
Now, I also have a headache that has been bothering me just shy of a migraine, so home and eaten, I took a migraine piull and will soon take a nap, hope that make it go away. The weather is dimal to say the best about it.Exhausting day for me and my back. Going horizontal will help,

Evenin', Chloe! I'll have a hot fudge sundae and a Rio Grande mug of decaf, please. Thanks! (Nope, just decided to lower my caffeine intake, doesn't keep me up any later). Hey, where'd the seats and counter go for the front part of the Diner? Oh, remodeling, eh, Dennis?

Todd, better take your helmet with you to the funeral (leave it in the car, so you can get it on real quick after the funeral's over)... How're your daughter & grandson doing? I had been thinking they had moved out of your area a while back (like to Texas, I thought...?) or something. But maybe you mentioned it when I was taking lessons from Duke...
Ken - your LHS is closed on Tuesdays & Wednesdays? That's strange... Got another one not too much further away?
Galaxy, way to go with the cable people. I may have to learn some tips from you, Jedi Master!
Hey, Jeff - your friend isn't related to you, is he/she? (The one rebuilding the truck, that is)
Kind of a lazy day today, as I was off w**k, so went by the library to use their internet (faster there). However, the spot I like (with plug-in and without camera over your shoulder) was in use by one doctor that I've seen in there before. So I used the laptop at one comfy chair until the battery ran mostly down (about mid-day or so, but I was getting a little hungry, too). Came home, fixed a sandwich and *then* went by the grocery store (never do it the other way 'round, I've found...) for a bit of grub. Have been trying to hunt down some info on my elusive grandfather (on Mom's side); no more luck on that than I had over the weekend.
Speaking of relatives (as some have recently, I guess my brother and I were luckier than some. Mom died in 1977 and when Dad died almost 10 years later, I didn't have the funds to go to Phoenix. My brother (the one who's 3 yrs. older but retired at 55? Yeah, that one ) lived in L.A. (not the one near Jeff), and he flew/drove over and took care of things. He sent me various memory stuff (my school gradecards that Mom had saved and Dad kept after she died), and a decent chunk of change. I figure brudder was well enough off that he didn't need much (might even have given me more than half, for all I know). And Mike took care of the funeral in St. Louis and arrangements for that, too. Could've been much worse, indeed.
Say, Chloe, are they gonna put some reclining chairs in the space that they have, or put the seats back in that we had? Oh, yeah, some of us can sleep just about anywhere, you're right.
Prayers for peaceful funerals (and afterword), for comfort, peace and healing for those in need of them.
[Edit]: Sheesh, two nights in a row I got TOP? Okay, Chloe, set up the buffet line again.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape G.

Evenin' folks!
Janie Just my.... Oh Jim's paying... Well add a strawberry sundae with extra whipped cream to that decaf I usually get. No! No1 I mean set the sundae next to the decaf, don't actually put it in the decaf...... Ya gotta tell them everything around here sometimes.... Yes, I know you were only kidding with me Janie!
Done went to the Docs today.... I got there 20 minutes early like they always say, checked in, and sat down. My rear end had no sooner touched the seat when they called my name! 15 minutes early... I hadn't even caught my breath from hiking in from the other end of the parking lot and climbing 2 flights of stairs to get to the waiting room. Nurse who called me in is both new and just about the cutest little thing I have seen in years.... She had me stand on the scale (which was as usual 25lbs. heavier than mine at home) then marched down the hall and took my blood pressure. Yea, right, with all of the above factors, they expect it should be normal! The doc took it again when came in the room and the nurse was gone. BP WAS normal by that time. He looked over all the blood work, nodded his head and said Wow! This is the best blood work I have ever seen for you, and grinned. he then told me my Cholesterol was all of 141. Good cholesterol was normal and the bad cholesterol was the lowest he has seen in a while. Liver and Kidney function were normal. He said the uric acid was still high but about half what it was a year ago. He asked me if i was having any trouble with my knees? I did a full deep knee bend stood up and said, "Nope!" He nodded his head and then filled out my Boy Scout Health form and said to keep doing what I have been doing!
I was very careful driving home after the appointment. Nothing gives you the feeling of impending doom like a doctor telling you that you are in great health!
Stopped at the LHS on the way home for 3 little items they always have in stock..... Only one was in stock, of course since I need it now!
Hey Jeffrey, I seem to remember that Packard made a straight 8 at one time.... Don't know about a double 6??? My Dad and I used to go through the "Dead Letter Office" at Don Howard's Farm Machinery (his cousin) every Spring to see what we could get up running to use on the farm for the summer. We checked out the old junked vehicles he had and found one of the straight 8's. He said they great for using up gasoline!
Barry, have you heard anything yet on your tests? Keeping you in my prayers!
Have a great night and prayers for all in need!

Todd - Sorry to hear of your wife's loss. And it's sad to see what happens to some families following the death of someone. In my case, having lost my sister first, then my father, and finally my mother, I didn't have those problems. All the decisions were mine, and mine alone. Of course, so was all the work and worries too.
It's been kind of hard to be cheerful here at home. The wife just keeps getting bad news on top of bad news. We saw our doctor for our annual exams. He ordered a bone density scan and an ultra scan on her leg, and prescribed an anti-inflamatory drug as well. He was concerned about the possibility of blood clots in her ankle. Fortunately, the ultra scan showed no signs of them. So last Thursday we had blood work done, then Thursday she had the bone density test and a mammagram done. Friday, we saw the surgeon. X-rays revealed that the ankle has literally come apart. He also said he was somewhat taken back at the amount of arthritis that has shown up since the last x-rays at the end of March. Surgery will be required again, but he isn't sure what he is going to do yet, Either screws, screws and a plate, or fuse all the bones together. He ordered a CT Scan, which we had done after leaving his office. Our next appoitment is this coming Friday. But on Saturday, our Primary Care Physicians office called to tell her that the bone density scan indicates she has Osteoporosis, and called in a prescription for that. About an hour later, the mail comes and the results of her bloodwork is delivered. The medication she has been taking for a thyroid condiction is not doing its job and the doseage has been doubled. Boy, old age isn't for sissies.
On the railroading front, we did get in 2 hours of railfanning on Sunday. Caught 11 trains in that time on Norfolk Southern's main line here. The most interesting one, and one which I haven't seen before, was an intermodal with a single Dash 9 with about a dozen double stack cars. So all you folks with layouts, you don't always need 125 well cars to be realistic. It really is true I believe, that anything a model railroader wants to do on his or her layout, probably has a prototype to prove it's acceptable.
Hope everyone has a good one tomorrow. Tom

Evening guys
I got my order from Atlas today. The correct truck sideframes for my C425s (exposed bearing, instead of the enclosed Kato one), an SD24 cab, and some numberboards for it. My chop-nose geep project knd of advanced a bit. The Atlas cab and the P2K Geep take a bit of work to fit right on the long hood, but the front of the cab re-uses the P2K's tabs for the front of the cab. After the modifications, the cab fits nice and tight. I still have yet to pick up a split-windshield conversion kit from des plaines hobbies to make the cab right for the GP5 I'm building. Pictures of the Alco's new sideframes and the atlas cab fitting on the P2K GP9 tomorrow after work.
Kind of tired after hanging out with some friends. I'll stop by tomorrow morning before work.
Hello everybody ...

Time for me to call it a night. Been on the phone to relatives and friends in Texas and New Mexico finding out about a certain GMC truck. Finally went to the horses mouth so to speak and got the low-down on it. 1941-42 GMC CCKW flatbed ex-military truck that someone shoehorned a 1920's Packard twin-six engine into. Why? Who knows. Layout front: Painted handrails. Metal ones were no problem. Paint doesn't like to stay on the plastic ones but silver ink from a Sharpie works great. Noticed my Bachmann GP7's were starting to whine a little so I put a drop of Dexron/Mercon ATF on the gears and they're whisper quiet again. Ran the Athearn/Proto GP35 behind the freight on address 00 for 20 minutes forward and turned it around and ran it for 20 minutes backward. Runs as quiet as any of my Atlas locos. Worked on a lighting problem on one of the GP9 Frankenlocos. The way the light was set up made the cab light up like a Jack-O-Lantern at Halloween. With the application of a little electrical tape only the headlight and number boards light up now. See y'all tomorrow.

Work Front Pretty boring today, I like it that way to a point. Being bored all so means I am not making anything. But, It sure felt good walking out the door at 9:01!
Jim Ken, the owner of K 10 Model Train's has Parkinson. Personally I just happy his door's are still open.
Vincents I did call Walther's as you know from our PM. I was shocked when I was told they stopped making PK 1000 F-3's in 1996. So no new motors for me!
New found wealth. Well, it seems like I am rich with the coming $1325.00 Settlement from Mattress Giant. I have not bought a new engine now for 2 years. Most will go into savings, but I might buy my self a treat.
I have been wanting a M1 for some time now, plus K-10 still has a Blue Line Big Boy! (My PCM one is down again ) Yet my RIP track could keep the Sundown Shop busy for weeks! If not months. Guess I be better off buying decoders and motors. More than likely I will buy some motors and decoders.
See you all later. Boy two days off in a row, seems like a luxury.
Anyone knows of where I can find direct fit motors for PK 1000 F 3's, I would appreciate a link. Vincent won't appreciate it, If I can get them back on the rails, I am keeping them.
Gary I just tried to send you a PM. Any idea why it was blocked?

Going to be a day full of meetings so better get ready to do this....

Good Morning!!!
Coffee and the Brakeman’s Special please. Over easy on the eggs and could you add a waffle too thank you.
Long day today. Gotta be at the funeral home by noon. Visitation from 1 to 4 with funeral immediately following in Springfield, burial in Rochester, then food at the AC club in Sherman. Told the dog she needs to make sure she poops before we leave or she'll be preeeettty uncomfortable for a while.
Ray- Don’t I know about the problems. I was executor for my Mom, but my sister was all but estranged. She did swoop in and try to get all the good stuff and was rather miffed when she found out we either bought some stuff at the auction Mom had but she didn’t attend, or Mom had already given it to us. Not all the good stuff mind you, just what she wanted us to have and whatever we wanted. That way her daughter could have first pick so no arguements. Mom was sly that way. Worked too, though you'll never get to a point wheremy sister doesn't "know what's really going on" whether she does or doesn't. All in all though, it wasn’t bad for me. Luckily Brenda is not the executor of her Mothers estate or I’d need more than beer to get me through this one. I'm used to the once in a while family squabble but this constant always someone mad at someone else and trying to stir the whole bunch in and all that just gets un-nerving to me. You'd think I'd be used to it after all these years. There are a lot of relatives coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches looking for a piece of....well... nothing actually.
Jim- Daughter and Grandson are doing well. No she wasn’t thinking of moving, we were. That Is Brenda and I. We pretty much thought we were staying around for our parents. Now that they are gone, I don’t know what we’ll do. Sounded good until it’s on us. I have a few friends I think I’ll miss. You guys I’d take with me of course.
Tom- I’m so sorry to hear bad news about your wife. Rest assured she is very much in my prayers. You as well.
Jeff- Another treasure from the closet I see. I bet everyone wishes they had a closet like that. You sure that isn’t a second bedroom you just thought was a closet? I’m kinda with the third cousin you wish you could forget on this one. At least a try anyway. I mean, how many chevy trucks have a Packard twin six? It’s not like he’s gotta figure out how to make it fit. Just get it running. Not that I think it'll necessarily be that easy as just get it running, but you know what I mean. Unless of course it was one of those, hack everything up set it in there and then say….”gee this isn’t gonna work. Well, there’s always that shed that need some support for the wall.”
Gotta see if the trucks show up about 9:30 then if they both have not been there, call the boss lady and say she’ll have to get someone else to put the second one away. No time to wait for it today. Oh sorry, Text teh boss. No one talks on the phone now. Not a surprise, they already know. In fact two guys say they will do it, one is my friend who owns the bar part…er sorry, the LOUNGE part. No bars allowed in Williamsville . The other is the cook who said he would if need be. Hate to see him come all the way from Springfield though. But, I have no choice in this.
Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Morning All,
Sitting at home drinking my morning coffee. I go into w**k today at 4 PM. Supposed to be high of 88 F and 60% chance of rain. Yesterday the weather guessers made a big deal of all the rain we would be getting and we got a grand total of 10 minutes of sprinkles-enough to raise the humidity. There is a chance I may have to work Friday but I won't know that probably until tomorrow.
I plan on finishing ground cover today. It should take about 2 hours at the most.
PA Tom- Sorry to hear about your wife and I will say prayers for both of you.
Everybody have a good day.

Good Morning Modelers!
It's 42F and clear here heading up to the low 80's again today. Bunny, what bunny? So far it has not shown up in our yard since I took away it's safe spot under the shed. Saw a coyote on the way to work so the bunny better stay close to it's new safe spot or become a fast food meal. Got the first day of our Wichita Trip posted on my blog <click here> but here is one shot I took on Day #1 I think all will enjoy.
