Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Thank y….OH! Prime rib on the buffet today?? Oh super duper Thank you!!!!

Mostly sunny, with a high near 74.

Sssssh. All’s quiet with the In-Laws last evening. Reeeeally nice cousin from Yah-Hey-Dare Land (Wissyconsin) arrived and is staying at the MIL’s house. So that kept them occupied. Only one potential flare up I heard about when I had lunch with Evil Twin. She was carrying on about Super Duper Evil sister over something and said she may end up punching her in the mouth at just about the same time our waitress Suki, which oddly enough sounds Japanese to me, showed up to ask if I we wanted mo dwink. Poor girl heard that, shifted a glass back and forth in her hand she had when she asked and said half to herself, half out loud, “Um, I theenk, I bettah get reed of these fust”. And kinda bustled off. Yes she did return to get my refill. Funny. Suki was my favorite until she disappeared. ( thought maybe they sold her) and was replaced by Nancy/Susan. Who I must say I like a bit better but still like Suki. Now Nancy/Susan is gone and Suki is back. BUT Suki, who last time had trouble even understanding what you wanted to drink, now speaks much mow betta than she used to. I wonder if they’re off learning mow American language.Hmm

Jim- Thanks I’ll tell her. As far as plausible deniability goes, I just gave up and admitted a long time ago. I don’t know squat about locos, railcars, railroads, railways, the eating habits of Llamas ner nuthin. I just enjoy Model Railroading and all that goes with it. Well, maybe not ballasting but you know what I mean. Best part is the people. Ok, so the tolerant of others type like you guys in here. But it’s the whole thing about the modeling a “living” thing I like. And yes I do and always have liked trains, I’m just not…., well…., THAT into them to know which is which. I do, oddly enough, enjoy listening to the conversations about them though.

After listening in on the Geep stories, I guess there is no doubt about at least two things. One, If you freelance there is no wrong designed loco. And two, the Sundown shop is a prototypical operation. Kudos Jeff for modeling it so wellYes.

Who knows what today will bring. I am ALMOST to that point where I feel I can spend a bit of time in the train room again. Things should get back to normal. The flooring in the next room and the last bathroom can be done at a normal pace and all the shtuff can be done allowing for some down time as well. Life is goodBig Smile.

Sigh GrumpyMy wife is not my Mother. I have explained that to her every year for 37,000 years it seems. The kids are both old enough to buy their own cards and have been for several years now. Expecting me to give her a card just because she is a mother is opening the door for an excuse for me to buy all the Mothers I know a card. NOT happening. It’s got nothing to do with love, I wash her underwear with mine when I do laundry so she knows I love her.  I hear her stirring so we’ll see if she remembers this year that no matter how much she has to Mother me, she’s still not my Mother.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have a large coffee, please.

Curt, Nice progress on your RH.  We put in our floor, wired it, and I haven't got back to the structure.  Maybe when I finish the car shop.

Todd,  Tell Brenda, " Sorry for her loss.  She will be in our thoughts and prayers."

Today, we plan to enjoy our last warm day at home before heading back to work.

Good morning. It's 64° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 82° and it'll be partly cloudy.

Looks like I'll be able to mow the grass today. There's no mention of rain in the forecast until Tuesday. As for the rest of the day, no plans as of yet.

Morning Coffee at the Rivet Counter
Posted by galaxy on Sunday, May 13, 2012 10:34 AM

V8Vega

California uses a special blend of gas not used in any other state. That and 67 cents a gallon tax is why our gas is so expensive. There are 4 refineries that make this special blend and right now 3 are closed for maintenance. Gas went up 10 cents in two days and 14 cents last week, is at $4.27 at the cheapest stations. The party in power put this special blend law in years ago. Seems like there is always a couple of refineries closed in May and gas gos way up.

92 Sun. and Mon.

Seems like refineries always closed "for maintenance" or "to start summer blends" {as opposed to "winter blends"} in May. so it is NOT the "just for CA" blends!

Our gas in NY has actually gone down to about $3.899. But I swear come the 28th {Memorial Day here in the USA} it will CLIMB significantly! the "summer gas rate" will kick in! This "cheaper" gas now will only be the calm before the storm. Summer tourism will once agian be hurt by rising cas costs.

And don't you know that gas will be "as cheap as" $4.00" next winter!

This is a flame topic , so I put away the SoapBox now.

Mornin'.......  Oops!  Guess I missed breakfast today.

"The other man's grass is always greener, the sun shines brighter on the other side..."  Huh?  I dunoh!  THAT song just popped into my head just now...... Whistling

I'll have a Turkey Club Sandwich and an Iced Tea for lunch, Zoe.

Been up and at it for a while and just didn't get in to the diner until now.  Still printing and getting material ready for the Scholarship Dinner this Wednesday.  Also getting my BSA Health Form filled out and printed to take to my Doctors appt. tomorrow.

Currently 69°F outside, the high for today.  Looking at the possibility of a few showers later this afternoon.  This is the type of weather I love...  Warm enough so the heaters don't kick on, and cool enough I don't think about putting the air conditioners in  the windows..... Smile, Wink & Grin  I actually find I am tolerating heat much better after losing almost 40 lbs.  The house also seems to stay cooler without the old G5 computer running it's 9 or so fans pouring heat into the room.

Hope you all have a great Mother's Day!

Well I got my parents yard mowed. The front wasn't too bad but the back was almost a hayfield. I windrowed the clippings into rows every ten rows apart so they could be collected easily. I'm not going to collect them. Not my job. Now as for this afternoon, the bed is looking mighty good.

I just bought a new rider. It's a Bolens (MTD) and I'm thinking about mowing for a living.

It's not a bad way to make some money. I did it for several years. I wouldn't even attempt it now. Gas prices are way too high! My father's little 42" riding mower is an MTD also, a Yardman. Nice mower but I hate the reverse pedal on it and that Kohler engine could vibrate my fillings out if I had any. Boy that thing has high compression! Funny thing about it is the gas tank is the same size as the one on our Peerless tractor (looks like an overgrown MTD) but the single cylinder Kohler (17 hp) uses almost twice the gas as the fifteen plus year old two cylinder Briggs and Stratton (also 17 hp). They're both 42" cut. I can mow the whole yard twice on one tank of gas with the old machine then go cut my nieces yard. But with the newer one I can only mow the whole yard once then maybe get half the front yard again before it runs out of gas. You'd think the smaller engine would use less particularly when it's pulling a smaller load. The Yardman only weighs about half what the old tractor I use weighs. That just strikes me as weird.

Work was hit or miss as far as being busy. It was pouring like mad early in the day, then it turned nice out. Once it turned nice, buisness picked up.

I've been helping my father get his 84 LTD LX (with the suspension, electronics, and motor from a 1990 mustang LX with a 5.0) running again. The pushrods were too long and they hit the rockers. 1 new rocker and a set of new rods fixed the engine. He used a die grinder to give some clearence where the rocker and rods were hitting. I'm still suprised a rocker broke before a pushrod bent. He also upgraded the brakes from being the ones used on a 99-04 mustang to the ones used on an 03 mach 1 mustang. I personally like the car, kind of looks like a police car (has police crown vic wheels) but handles and drives like a mustang. Just with 2 more doors.

Jeff, not really too weird in my mind. The 2-cylinder mower engine probably has more torque, and/or doesn't have to struggle as much to make the same power. I had the same issue when I switched from a 2.3 mustang (rated at 98 hp) to a 5.0 mustang (rated at 210). Both got bests of 24 mpg in town. I figured the 98 hp 2.3 is struggling a bunch to move a 3200  pound car, while the 210 hp 5.0 isn't having that much difficulty with a 3400 pound car. the 2.3 got 24 mpg more often, probably because it uses less gas at idle.

Bill, I used to mow grass around the neighbor hood before I got an actual job. I think I made more per hour mowing, but I doubt it'd be that way now.

Good afternoon, Janie - (okay, maybe almost evening, but the sun's still up and shining) - I'll have a RBF, please 'n' thankyouma'am!

Jeff, kudos/kudoes (? - Not sure how ya spell the plural of that...) on restraining yourself (and not doing any further damage). Thumbs Up I was trying to recall - what are your plans for the old spot where that station was? And as Todd (and Chris and Vincent...) have shown us, the Sundown shops are right up there with the big time proto RR shops! Bow (What's that I see? It must be summer, there's a ball game starting in the park!)

Goodness, we made it to 81 F this afternoon! Cool

Ken, glad your new guy stuck around long enough to get his stuff figured out. Not that surprising that he didn't want to stick around, but once he has his 'legs' and you want to leave early, he may learn the wisdom of helping so you both get out as quickly as possible (but without major mistakes made).

Todd, as somebody once said about my kind of 'puter (and it could be applied to MRR'ing): "...It's supposed to be fun!" Yeah I kinda figure that there should be a balance between my hobby and the amount of time I spend for detail - which is why I definitely don't have a reserved seat at the RC, nosiree! Smile, Wink & Grin Now, I appreciate the stuff that the card-carryin' RC folks can do - I just am not knowledgeable enough/skilled enough to do that without a lot of extra w**k to attempt what they do (and likely some muttering under my breath while I'm trying to get that done). My "good enough" is NOT the same as, say, Chris' knowledge about C&NW, or Ray's skills with his roundhouse interior, etc. But then again, it w**ks fine for Jim. Wink (Yeah, I hear you about ballasting, too...)

Dennis - not wanting that SoapBox to come out of its corner and all, but did the party in power out there take any contributions from the refinery folks when they were running for election? (Just a-wonderin'...) Whistling

Broadway - now THERE's a subway picture for you! WowLaugh

Today I dropped the Mother's Day card off at my daughter's (& SIL's) place, as they were gone to her Mom's and Andy's folks (likely for the weekend), natch. (No, Todd, my daughter isn't my Mom, either. But then again, I have no problem with only getting a card for my choice of a woman who isn't actually my mother... Smile, Wink & Grin But it'd be nice to actually see daughter a bit more often (like say, on Father's Day?)...

Earlier today, I started epoxying some of the walls on my first Main St. Heritage kit. Almost had it epoxied to the metal magnetic gluing rig, but I caught that in the nick of time. Oops Have most of the walls except for two or three smaller walls (it's an irregular shape, like a bigger building that had a smaller building added to the side, and then the smaller building had a shed added on the back of it, making it just a bit deeper than the original bigger building. (Yeah, I'll need to post photos; makes more sense to see it than to describe it)

Have tracked down about four generations back on most of my family - except for my grandfather on Mom's side - couldn't find a whole lot of anything on him. On one of my Dad's side's relatives, I got back to a fifth generation for one.

As for mowing lawns, I only mowed ours, and that was kinda good, since it was time that I wasn't gonna be interrupted. Push (gas) mower, just walking it back and forth (or around and back, depending on my mood that week...). We had one slope on the back side of the lot, where I would push the mower (or hang onto the handle and follow it down the hill) down, and then haul it backwards up the hill to the crest, move it over to the next row of grass and back down again until I got the thing done. Sort of my 'me time'. Ahh,,,,

Think I'll chill out here at the window booth with my RBF a while.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Evening guys

Just got back from taking my mom out to dinner.

The hunt for some F-units: I lost a bid on a stewart F7 AB in Reading on the bay. So I still have only an AB set. I searched some more and found 4 different BN F9 AB sets. 2 Stewarts and 2 Athearn Genesis. All 4 cost far more than I'd want to pay. The cheapest was a stewart set for 90... I found a few undecorated F9As that are right (DBs with 2 headlights), but can't find an F9B.

Jeff, It looks like the Details west kit for F-units has almost an entire rear door and such, and 1 F9 had a plow pilot. Looks like your F9s will get a new lease on life.

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

Flo, Beer please and Happy Mothers Days.

Boy I am exhausted. While we where slow today we made budget I think. Just being a mere counter person I have not been taught the correct way to read the Store Budget Screen.

Speaking of being a mere Counter Person. Dave called Jeff tonight. The shop was not off to a great start when Dave left Saturday at noon, in fact it was doing pretty Cabooseie. Dave told Jeff what a great job he did turning the day around! Well he did do a good job. Jeff had $2500.00 in sales, where I only had $3500.00 in sales? His GP was 49.5% and mine was only 51.2%. Yea, I only the counter guy that answers the phone and get people in the door, answers Jeff question and fixes his problems. No Good Job for me! Sigh

Well I am done with my pity party.

Time for me to call it a night. Mowed the parents yard this morning then came back home and got some rest. Later I did some work on my current project. A 70's era Athearn GP35 painted in GT colors. Yep, one of the old wide hood units. It was pretty much stock mechanically when I got hold of it. Since then the old black ring magnet motor, spline shafts and coffee grinder trucks with their sintered iron wheels have been relegated to the junk box. In their place are are Proto 2000 motor and flywheels from an FA1, a pair of Proto 1000 Blomberg trucks with nickel silver wheels and a pair of drive shafts made from Proto and Athearn parts. The last thing done to it today was to patch the shell for the L&A. It sounded like a rolling coffee grinder when I got it. Now it's as quiet as any of my Atlas locos.

See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' Folks!

Janie just a cup of decaf... Oh you got it for without my asking.  Why thank you!  I know, I am a creature of habit.

Been printing off more programs, putting some finishing touches to a few other items I will get printed as soon as I have the all the last minute Info, Reserved Tables, etc.  Also have basically finished one more turnout for the layout.  just have to glue it to the ties and install it on the layout.  This one is for a crossover.  It will have to be fit in place as the parallel tracks are 2" inches apart.  Shouldn't be a difficult installation as I have done this before.  Actually much easier than modifying most commercial turnouts.

Catch you all tomorrow.

Morning guys

Got today off, but I have some errands to run later today.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the breakfast scramble with bacon please. Tanks

Sunny, with a high near 79.

Well Mothers Day went off great. Had a last minute cook out. Nothing fancy, just burgers, some wings,(turn your hearing aids down Ray) store bought potato salad, baked beans and….cake. Reeeeally nice cousin and hubby came over as well as our daughter and son and his girlfriend. Son brought a nice card and some beautiful flowers. Daughter brought hamburger, cake, helped get things ready, even cleaned up. I’m not sure they were our kids. Looked like ‘em. Even Missy the dog was helping. She kept an eye on everyone just in case they needed help eating their food. Especially the kids and the “new people” who may not know she doesn’t get food from people, just what’s put in her bowl. Brenda was very happy.

Aaaaand out of left field…..BIL number two calls to report that a COUSIN has called to complain because she heard another cousin got to pick what she wanted first and didn’t think that was right because blah, blah, blah.Bang Head The buzzards are starting to circle. Wait til after the funeral to see what happens with the thing.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!
