Evening folks

We are currently experiencing a very thick haze and strong smell of caustic burning metal as there is a scrap metal yard on fire, the big thing is it's 25km to the south of home. The wind is blowing the smoke north. Currently nursing a strong head ache from the smoke, have all the windows closed. It smells like someone soldering non stop. The smoke is expected to last for hours. There is approx 10 crews on scene.

Earlier I had started doing the wiring for the yard, but the smoke has made me have a lie down, I will get back to it in the morning.

In other news It looks like the other side of the house downstairs (where my room and layout are.) could be developed - it's currently a garage, this means the existing layout space could get a lot bigger. The freezer, bookcase and table could all be gone, which means I would more or less expand past the bridge module and have an island peninsula before curving back around to the wall and to a much larger yard... Only a possibility at the moment, but none the less... exciting prospect. It means I could have nearly 60' of mainline run, perfect for N scale! I'm envisaging rolling california desert or something similar for my modern trains rolling through.. ahh yes, sorry just thinking out loud, LOL.

Best get some rest, the smoke is very nauseating.

Goodnight.

Time for me to call it a night. I got a little layout work done even if it was just ripping the diverging route rails and points out of a turnout and putting in a piece of straight rail to make it a piece of straight track with exceptionally wide ties. I'm currently watching an F3 A/B set (Proto 1000 shells on Stewart drives) pull a train around the layout. The A unit has a Mashima motor or maybe Proto Power West motor and the B unit has an Athearn blue box motor shoe horned into it. Both have Bachmann decoders and run very well. See y'all tomorrow.

Steamed Veggie Plate, please.

Neighbor called from her work and asked me to check on her horse. Another neighbor had helped her pull a roofing nail from it's hoof. I went up and did a thorough cleaning of it's hoof, soaking it in hydrogen peroxide and then scrubbing it with some Relief antimicrobial. What a sweet old horse. Followed me out to the gate when I was finished. Other than giving it a tetanus shot (which I do not have), it should be OK. It did not sound like the nail was deep.

Have a goo dnight all. I'm exhausted.

Hmmmm....  i find myself here replying to myself!?!  Is THAT allowed?

Anyway, Janie, I sure could use a cup of decaf before I head out to bed.  Gotta be on the road a little after 7AM tomorrow.  THAT is 2 hours before I get up.  Could be an interesting start to the day. Whistling

Hope everyone survived Friday the 13th. where ever you are.

I hope I have everything packed I need tomorrow for the Meet.  The cake for the anniversary celebration turned out very nice, so I hope I don't drop it on the way into the church where the meet will be held.  Looks like everything is go for the day.  I hope all people attending have a great time there.

Won't be in before I leave so you all have a good Saturday!

You know I really hate it when I misspell a word so bad that spell check won't help me.......!

blownout cylinder

Early one day, a C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we
don't serve minors." So the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open
fifth between them.

After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F
comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.
Later, a D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse
me. I'll just be a second." Then an A comes into the bar, but the bartender
is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and
exclaims, "Get out now. You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar
tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a
3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a
nice corporate job until his company downsized) says, "You're looking sharp
tonight, come on in! This could be a major development." This proves to be
the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands
there au natural.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest.
The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the
diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without Coda at
an upscale correctional facility.

On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even
accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had tenor so patrons,
with the soprano out in the bathroom, and everything has become alto much
treble, he needs a rest, and closes the bar.WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Disgusting!!!  Completely Atonal! Gag, gag, gag......

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Please.

Well I am starting to like Friday the 13th! Big Smile Trains are running great, wife is happy, she got a new converter box in the bedroom and on Demand she can watch repeats of Dancing With The Stars. Ick!

I may all so have another 3 day weekend! Yes I will find out Saturday for sure one way or another. Punishment for the 3 day weekend? I will have to work at the St Peter's store Monday! Yes I really like that! Just to bad it such a long drive and gas is so high.

Galaxy Very unlikely replacing the Strut's would cause sufficient stress to crack the windshield. More than likely a dealership would use a 2 post lift that has 4 points of contact on the van. Wasn't the windshield resealed a few months ago? A bad install could possible have cased it but would be real hard to prove. Sometimes glass will just pain crack for no good reason.

Charger on the left is a 1968 Hemi 4 speed R/T with only 32,000 , miles on it, one on the right is mine. Think Dave's 68 is in the picture as well.

Galaxy- In FL the state requires the Insurance companies to replace windshields at no cost to owner. You can do this once a year. They will even come to your house to do it. Does NY have anything similar?

Eventide on Friday the 13th
Posted by galaxy on Friday, April 13, 2012 3:41 PM

Well, well, well.

The Kia now has a windshield crack. Quite a size of a one. I swear {as does MOH} tha it WAS NOT THERE when we took it to the Kia dealer. After all, 3 days earlier it passed inspection at Firestone except the defect-on-recall front suspension spring which was broken. The dealer did the recall work and I had them re-inspect it. They found the crack, but passed it with warning to get it fixed ASAP.

OUR contention is that is was broken while at teh dealers {perhaps  due to stresses on it from the suspension coil spring replacement process???} BUT proving it was done at the dealers is another matter. AND they have always had that anti-liability thingy about "not being responsible for lost or damaged property" to fall back on.

Will have to check Monday with insurance man to see if I claim it will my cheap rate go up just for the claim? I could do it now, but at 4:30 pm on a Friday I can get less done than I can at 9 AM Monday! It will survive the weekend.

I am not sure I would buy another Kia as they have had way to many recalls and "service bulletins" on the thing. I have had a LOT of warranty work done also! To much for my comfort level.

I willhave to put off the 60K service till about 65K miles {it has 58,700 now} til I have the money to have it done as NOT CHEAP to do they inform me. About $1500. which is a LOT of money to us. I will have to work saving for it into the budget somehow.

Oh well, if it was a horse would I have to shoot it? I don't know.

Afternoon Tea and Crumpets 4/13/12
Posted by galaxy on Friday, April 13, 2012 11:22 AM

Good afternoon.

To all who made suggestions {like I'm gonna take RAY'S suggestion!!}...the dealer took it out with GPS and speed matched it to GPS device. Since we have a GPS of our own in the KIA, it will be interesting to see what the Caravan says. Only thing is the KiA Sedona has to come back first for the GPS is in the glove box....Whistling

ALso, I never thought of it until they mentioned it, but I HAVE checked it to GPS before as it can read out speed on the GPS and matched to within 1 MPH of the speedometer. Never thought of it that way..we will have to take out the Caravan and see what it says.

The next few days...WARM here ..highs near 80! maybe a good time to take the carvan out to test it whilst getting some ice cream!!! Posta rain the whole time though...bummer!

I hate going in the caravan..I know MOH has been smoking again...sneaking around behind my back...I can smell it.... and the caravan REEKS {REAKS?} of smoke..either from MOH smoking in it or letting others smoke in it or probably  both. MOH tries to cover it up with smelly febreeze thingys but doesn't work!

Well gotta go put the laundry in the dryer.

Italian roast coffee in a SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Jeffrey, I really like what you decided to do with that turnout. Neat look to it. As for the now abandoned engine house, might you consider making it look like just that, a weathered, deteriorating, perhaps even caving in old building? Or do you have other plans for that area?

Pushed to much yesterday with this darn toe, so will rest it through the weekend, only doing the minimum mandatory chores.

Well, I decided it was time to abandon a turnout in place and instead of taking up the ballast and pulling up the entire turnout and replacing it with a piece of straight track then laying in new ballast I decided to have a bit of fun. I left the turnout (Bachmann #5 that has never worked properly) right where it was. I used my Dremel to make a few strategic cuts in the rails then used a pair of pliers to remove the pieces of rails curving to the diverging track then pulled up the points and all but one of the guard rails. Last thing to come up was the metal frog. I used the Dremel to cut under the ends of straight rail that were left to make room for rail joiners then took a piece of straight rail with a joiner already on it and slipped the joiner onto the straight rail at one end then holding the rail beside the other piece of straight rail determined where it had to be cut so it'd fit the gap then cut it. Slipped a joiner on the newly cut end so the joiner was pushed all the way on, positioned the rail end so it met the end of the existing rail and pushed the joiner forward to join the two pieces of rail. I used my NMRA gauge to get the rails in gauge and while holding the new rail in place I pump a line of super glue under the rail and held the rail in place for a few minutes while the glue set. At 10:30 the glue was dry and I ran two locos pulling fourteen cars over the newly worked area and there were no problems. That part of the track now has a unique look to it. The spur will be abandoned in place and the engine house it goes into will be removed.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a bran muffin and a cup of dark roast coffee.  Oh and some real butter for the muffin.

A nice sunny day here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS at the moment.  Currently 53°F with high later of 58F this afternoon.

I have a busy day picking up odds and ends, printing some additional stuff for the meet.  We have an offer to have a 1/1 scale caboose on tour for the afternoon session.  Need to get some insurance issues taken care of and make sure it is all set.  Have to get the 50th. anniversary cake this afternoon along with paper plates, forks, and other associated stuff.

Hey, Ken had hair back then........  Love those old 20th. century styles!Whistling

Sue, my lawn needs mowing again!  May get to it Sunday afternoon.

Galaxy, here's what you can do, at your own risk of course....  Drive through a speed trap at exactly 20mph over the speed limit.  One of the friendly police officers will be glad to stop you and tell you exactly how fast you were going.  Then you will know exactly how far off your speedometer is.......WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Stay safe on Friday the 13th. people!

Later!

Does any of you car hounds know of a way to check the accuracy of a speedometer? MOH clams I am a "speedy Gonzales" when I drive th Kia and MOH follows in the Caravan. I kept the speedometer set on cruise control exactly AT the speed signs designated and STILL I "was driving to fast". I say the speedometer in the Caravan is probably behind, and maybe the Kia is a little faster, so maybe both are off? The Kia a little fast, the caravan a little slow? DOn't tell me to try speed-matching to another vehicle on the highway as you can see two speedometers DON'T match!

Did the Caravan get tires put on it at some point?  Bigger would make the speedometer read less then the actual speed, smaller would read higher.

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have waffles with my coffee, please.  We are still doing cleanup from the ice storm in January.  I got some done yesterday.  The grass is starting to grow so the pressure is on.

Garry,  Glad the tree didn't hit you.  I thought that you  were going to say that the mailbox post broke off.  That would be a couple of hours work.

Ken,  The photos remind me of a time when the cars were tough.

Good Morning!!! Just coffee please. Thanks.

Nice sweater KenWhistling

Feeling reeeeally tired this morning and I don’t know why. Might take a nap as the weather doesn’t seem appropriate for much outside.I should do stuff inside though as there is plenty enough to do in here.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. South southeast wind between 15 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Healing thoughts and prayers for those in need and hope for safety for those in the areas of predicted bad weather tomorrow.

Welp, best see what Friday the 13th can throw at me.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Joe! ...CONGRATULATIONS! I'm very glad to hear your good news! .... Everybody, let's celebrate. RBF's on me today.

Ken .... I bet you wish you could keep young like in the old photo. The years pass too quickly.

Here is one of the pictures I put in WPF. The Rapido heater car makes its own "steam" and is a well detailed model. You can see the "steam" at the truck.
