Sir Madog

If you look at the prototype picture of "Ospizio Bernina", my friend won´t have to build a lot of trees for his layout. At 7403 ft. above sea level, there are not many growing there.

Altitude has it's advantages. Down here we have lots of trees. If I put in the number of trees per square mile on my layout as we have here I wouldn't be able to see the track unless I was right over it.

Greetings to all from Florence, Italy.  It's been raining a lot, unfortunately, which has limited our tourism somewhat.  It hasn't messed up our dining, though, and in a place like this with a superb restaurant around every corner, that's a plus.  We need more nice weather, though, to walk it off.

Yesterday we got up early and walked to the train station.  We bought tickets for Venice, and enjoyed a 2-hour ride on the Italian railway.  Rule 1:  Buy your tickets in advance.  We had to get first-class tickets, because the 2nd class coaches were full.  Oh, well, sometimes you just have to suffer.  The ride was smooth, mostly over what I assume was welded rail on concrete ties.

Venice remains a beautiful city.  We took a gondola ride, something we missed out on when we last visited the city on our honeymoon.  Rule 2:  If you get the chance to take a gondola ride in Venice, do it.  They look nothing like the gons on my layout.  Again, the ride home was smooth, and I slept soundly that night.

Good wishes for everyone.

Well once again my insurances are no longer covering the muscle relaxer they WERE covering. If they cover a script for ANY PART of a year, they ought to cover for the whole year and give you tiem to line up a new one they WILL cover..! the problem is they are limiting coverages of controlled substances and they are listing more once-not-controlled-as NOW-controlled and the insurances are not covering. It WAS a non-controlled, went controlled and now is not covered anymore!!!

will pick up the replacement later. Hope it works as good as the one I WAS taking!

Jeffrey- glad your mother is doing OK... I never had any complaints aobut hospital food, but i never had to cook it either, and anything I don't have to "slave over and cook" is mighty tasty to me!!! Whistling

Ulrich...trees grow in abundance here too...if we put lots of trees out there'd be no room for track, though the tracks cut right through the trees...only cleared areas are free of trees...

Dinner will be left over ham, on bread, in a hot bath or however you want it.

Well, MOH called and is running late. Will get my afore mentioned script on the way home so I don't have to go out.

nappy-time soon.

Afternoon All,

Did some laundry and vacuuming today. After that I weathered gondolas. I still am waiting for 1 more 40 ft car for the  last load.

Jeff- Thanks. You know what I find surprising is that I enjoy weathering cars. I just figured it would be one of those jobs like  wiring. I actually find it calming. I have never been very artsy but I like mixing paints to get the color I want and using different techniques to get the effect I want. Of course everything is done in acrylic or latex paint.

Good Evening

We went and saw him on this cold blustery day...and we went to the cafeteria there with him..his appetite is returning..which is a good sign...he also made a few comments about the ...ermm...'scenery' ..yeah, that's it...scenery around the ward he was in....MischiefWhistling...good thing he did not say anything around his wife nor mine...Whistling

We are going to stay at home tomorrow and actually get some stuff done around the house for once..it has been a kind of chaotic week here....

Evening All,

Ate too much Chinese food tonight. Sitting here watching NCIS and ZeviaStick out tongue. Tomorrow I have to follow my son to the repair shop and bring him back home, he has a short in his dash. Also since he will be up we can do gutters early.

MOH is looking at hotels for the trip pilgrimage to Strasburg PABig Smile next year.

Barry and Stourbridge Lion- Thanks for the kind comments.

Prayers for all those in need.

Howdy!

We had great times with grandkids over the past several days. They are all back in their homes now (Cincinnati, Detroit, and Grand Rapids). ... Hmmmm ... That would be a neat name for a freelance RR. The CD&GR.

We were busy all the time. Here at the lake, in the Land Between the Lakes, and other places. Fishing, kyaking, riding the SeaDoo, sitting on our deck, watching sunsets, etc ............... Tell you more later.

I've just skimmed over recent pages, and I'm glad you had good Easter holidays.

Jeff ... Sorry your Mom has been so sick, and I hope she can recover quickly.

Ulrich ... I like the track plan for the Swiss Alps railway.

Curt ... Freight cars look great.

Happy Model Railroading!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me right now.  I'll have a seat in the back by the stove and warm up a bit.

Been busy doing a lot of computer work today.  Spent a couple hours updating the spreadsheet of the Division membership.  This time I did an update of all the info on it.  Our membership has grown slightly since the last list I got from the region.  Been printing out materials for the Meet on Saturday and finishing my Clinic as well.

Got my new ears early this afternoon....  Talk about an update!  These things even come with a remote to operate them.......  The two hearing aids "talk" to each other and the volume control in the one ear adjusts both aids simultaneously.  It has 4 available settings.  The first one has the hearing aids automatically deciding whether I would like to have the directional setting or the Omni setting....  I have already decided I don't care for that.  The second and 3rd. are mostly directional but with different amounts from the omni mics.  The aids actually learn from the adjustments I make to them how I like to use them and then automatically do that for me.  They even will keep a record of when I use them so I can't lie to the Doc anymore......  So far I rather like them.  Time will tell.  Go back in 2 weeks for adjustments.

Have a great night all!

Had to run for cover earlier when a line of thunderstorms came rumbling through.

I may be going to Alexandria tomorrow to visit my mother at the hospital. Not sure yet. It depends on the weather and how I feel in the morning. If I'm having more bouts of dizziness during the night or in the morning I'll stay home.

Got the trucks on the GP9 Frankenlocos painted today and lightly lubed the gears of the SDP40F's and that's about it for work on the layout. Had to go to my parents place this morning to be there to accept my mothers meals on wheels when they were delivered and put them in the freezer. Also gave me a chance to get some laundry done and raid the pantry.

Well time to call it a night. See y'all next time.

Wow. I guess neither of the posts I attempted to make mid trip posted. Bummer.

Anyways. Now I am home from my lovely adventure! I left last Wednesday to go visiting a couple colleges. I toured the Colorado School of Mines on Thursday; Cal Tech yesterday, and Cal Poly today. I liked all three quite a bit- each was different but all were good. If I get in to each one as well as the others I'm applying to, I have no idea which I'll pick!

Now, the big stretch betwixt thursday and monday... Well there were a few choo-choos in there. One lovely thing about the School of Mines is that about 2 miles from campus lies a little place called the Colorado Railroad Museum, and they have 100+ rolling stock there! I was impressed. Got to sit in the cab of a K-37, see all sorts of motive power and go in many cars... I must say, those D&RGW crew cars that were converted out of boxcars are SHORT! They said they're 6'1" on the inside, but they felt like they were only 5'10"!

On friday I also went to the Forney Museum of transportation in Denver. Pretty cool place as well- couple little steamers, tons of old cars- 1900's onwards, including a model T, some strange 3 axled limo, and a bunch of old Rollers. They also had a CORVETTE display, with virtually every year from '53 to '12 represented- quite the collection! I must say those old 'vettes are awesome. But I don't like 'em as much as I love my MOPAR! (hint, Cudaken!)

Oh, and at the Forney Museum, they had one BIG thing... the reason I went in the first place... UP 4-8-8-4 #4005. Man, those things are HUGE! I saw one back in 2005 but I must've forgotten the  magnitude of the darn thing... When we walked in, there was just this gargantuan locomotive there! It was so big it completely hid a rotary plow and CN&W 4-6-0. Really impressive piece of machinery... while it may not actually be the biggest/strongest, I don't care... that thing is a force to be reckoned with.

Alright, well I'm going to go and sleep.

Our gons were a bit different.  They weren't weathered, but rather kept in pristine condition.

Here's a shot of the business end of our train:

I'll be on my way home tomorrow, airplanes all the way.  Yuck.  The train was very comfortable, had lots more leg room and the big windows gave a great view of the Italian countryside.  Florence is a great place to spend some time.  It's a beautiful walking city.  Save a big budget for dining out - the food isn't terribly expensive, but every restaurant is so good that you'll want to eat out every night.

Lunchtime in Germany!

No, thanks, Zoe - I won´t be having anything. I have got a bad migraine, combined with nausea. This will be a day spent on the sofa, with my eyes closed and ears shut. Funny, whenever I have this, sounds appear to be twice as loud, causing strokes of pain in my head.

Jeff - how´s your mother doing?

Barry - is your friend improving?

Galaxy - I hope your MIL is also on the road to improvement.

Blessings!

Good morning.

Going to shop today. I know it's early, but with 24 hour stores i miss the crowds and don't have to wiat in line all the time.

Need a new light timer and cat litter from Wally world - maybe I stop by the toy dept. to see what they have in HO scale cars.

Then on to the grocery store. Have to stick to cheap budget this week. Need to be out of there for less than $50 no choice.

Then a few other things to start my day off.

Today is free bread/goodies day so I get that too.

Hope you all have a great day!

Hi Folks, We had a very strong 8.6 mag Earthquake in our region off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, same area the 2004 quake was. The difference is this was not a thrust or slip earthquake but a strike sliding earthquake, which means any tsunami will be much smaller than if it had upward motion.

It was apparently felt all the way in Bangalore India. Thoughts with the people affected.

Good Morning!!! Coffee and ham and eggs please. Scrambled with onions, green peppers and mushrooms thank you.

Patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 57. North northwest wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Jeff- Glad to hear about your Mother doing better. Never was a fan of grapefruit juice.

Whoa Curt! Those Gon’s look great!! Thought you might not like weathering? That means those are your first tries? OMG!!! (just had to use that) I am impressed and embarrassed all at the same time. Wow.Bow

-RAY GLAD YOU LIKE THE NEW EARS…..Oh sorry. Glad you like the ears. Only problem I see is you say you can’t turn one down, so if you’re sitting with someone to your left and, well, you know…..Whistling

MrB- Yes I recall the food in Italy I must say, was worth the trip. It is nothing like the Americanized “Italian food” in my neck of the woods. Funny too. Not much like the Italian food from Italians here. Much better. You know, I take that back. I ate in a restaurant in Venice and had the worst most tasteless piece of Lasagna. That frozen boxed one here in the states was better. But that little mom and pop place in Pisa….. Mama Mia!!! One of those multi course takes an hour and a half to eat things…Now THAT was good. Have a safe trip home.

G- Same here on the shopping times. However, I mostly end up going during the day during the week. Not AS crowded, but still busy. My fav time is like you, real early. Things just don’t work out that may often though for some reason.

Well, getting dry around here. Already had a couple field fires. One yesterday was avoidable. Windy with pretty good gusts and what were they still doing? Yup Burning seed bags. I can hear him now…“It’ll be ok.” (shakes head) Farmers.  Oh well. No real damage, about 10 acres and the field wasn’t planted. Bad thing was, they had just sprayed burn down so if he’d a known Frank was gonna torch that area…..Bang Head

Time to see if a new Ziva’sStick out tongue on this morning. Hope so. Probably end up burning my pile of stuff today since there is no wi…oh shoot. It’s Wednesday.Grumpy No burn today. Figures. Always windy on burn days which, of course, was yesterday. Now watch, it’ll be either windy or raining tomorrow and/or Saturday. Never fails. Oh well, nothing stopping me from mowing. Probably do that this afternoon anhd set the neighbors on their ears…

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Ulrich: Last I heard yesterday she was doing better and had many complaints about the food. I just hope she doesn't get to the point of taking scalps! I know her Indian temper has got to be making it's presence known by now.

Good morning. It's 61° and partly cloudy. There's a 20% chance of rain in the morning and a 30% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high will be 81°.

Not sure if I'm going anywhere today and no plans have been made.

Morning All,

Hope everyone is well today. I think it's supposed to be 84 F here today but tomorrow the high is 78 F (cool front). Have to get son up to get his car to the garage then clean gutters. Actually son will be cleaning and I will be supporting as I really do not like climbing on ladders due to height fears. Tonight our son is taking MOH and I out to supper since he was given a $50 gift certificate for being employee of the month at the Carabba's he cooks at.

I will probably start weathering box cars today.I was looking at RR photos last night to try to get it right.

Todd- Thank you. Actually this was my second attempt. My first were my coal hoppers but I feel I overdid it on them. I have found less is better sometimes.

Lee- Thanks for the offer.

Prayers for those in need.
