Terry,
I've had to do the compatability view thing on the tool bar a few times as between new 'puters and changes/updates here I couldn't post and pages wouldn't load. Maybe one of the more savvy patrons here would have a better idea, but there you go. J.R.
Thanks, JR. I'll give that a whirl when the computer expert gets home. Seems replying to threads is OK, just not to PM's.

I hope Ulrich holds on to his Hat if he dares go out in that weather!
We'd mighta be in a world of hurt with hurricane style winds here...trees downing power lines every where and such.
Weather guesser here ain't doin' so hot. It is sunny, 21* warm and actually the dusting I think is melting away in the sun! Very little inteh way on the radar..but more could move in later and make things a bit messy.
We shall see what we shall see when we shall see it.
Awaiting a call form the Dr. to discontinue a medication that makes me dizzy and lightneaded...and I mean more dizzy that you may already think I am!
I went to the LHS..bought a can of Ducote and a section of track I have plans for. Not much else. saw stuff I'd like to have maybe, but some was not necessary and some was way overpriced. Even at 20% off. One guy about cleaned out code 83 flex and took all the cork roadbed he could find in both HO and N scales! Some figures I'd like, but at 20% off it only served to bring them down to regualr prices others have to offer. Hate to see them go, but haven't bought anything form them in over a year, so i guess no biggie as I am not serving to support them. Lots of characters there. SOme older guys saw me with my cane and let me go ahead in the line. Nice of them. I don;t think I bought anything they were really after anyway.
Well, About time to start dinner. Haven't decided yet how to do the London broil. May just slice it and cookit in worcestershire sauce and a few spices in a pan to do something with..maybe put over noodles.
Later.

Got the errands in town done. I almost ran off without a package I was going to drop at the Post Office, but I remembered it before I got off the loop and came back for it. I got the rest of my groceries. One thing I couldn't find was sliced salad olives in a jar, so I had to settle for sliced black olives in small cans. Came back home and put it all up. I also picked up a can of starting fluid. I need the stuff to get my van started some days (especially when it's cold) only for the first start of the day. Only have to spray it on the filter for a second. In cold weather I have to give it a few seconds to evaporate before starting but in warm weather I can kick it right over. Sometimes it wants to be a little contrary and struggles a little and sometimes kicks over sounding like a Hemi. But most of the time it starts the way you'd expect a 318 to start. Occasionally it'll backfire through the exhaust and rattle the nearest neighbors windows. One time it did it one of them was in the process of picking up his cat! Nuff about that! OUCH! I guess most of the dogs here think it's too old to bother with and don't even chase it when I drive out.Well anyway my father wanted to go to Wal-Mart a bit later so we both went in his car. One thing he had to get was something that would dice up a whole onion without having to even once pick up a knife. I went in search of that as he would have gotten the cheapest chintziest thing he could find. Sometimes the man makes Scrooge look like a drunk sailor! But he got everything he was after.Got hand cramping going again. last time it was my left hand, this time it's my right. Been having occasional problems with cramps in the ribs on my left side too. That smarts!Be back later.

Janie, I just need a refill on the decaf, then I'm heading back to the booth by the stove!
Currently 8°F outside the door. At least the cold showed up. The snowstorm was a complete fizzle. We had a total of .1" of snow here in the last 24 hours..... Tonight they now say 0" and tomorrow and tomorrow night 0" as well. 'tis OK, cold I can deal with easily by adding wood to the stove. The fluffy white stuff has to be shoveled!
I am running out of necessary materials to complete the small yard I am rebuilding on the layout. I have used up all my tie stock and have more on order..... It will arrive when it gets here I guess. Should be getting a delivery of an order from Caboose Hobbies.... Aha! Just arrived!

Finding an increased interest in passenger trains on my (N) layout. Must be ROAR's influence. Along with the Hiawatha, the other train I find appealing is the U.P.Aerotrain. While the Hiawatha would join the Daylight for Volcano tours, the much smaller Aerotrain could take senior passengers to a station unusually close to the Soylent Green Plant. Yes, I like this new plan.
Need to hit H.D. and get a fresh bucket of sheetrock mud. Have some long overdo patchwork to do on the unfinished staircase here. The remainder will be put towards the train layouts.
The 2 cheapo replacement van rims arrive this evening. Not pretty chrome like the originals. Bought argents instead. Who cares if the rear rims don't match the fronts, as long as it drives down the road. Still have to get the battery checked. One step at a time.

Evening all!
Sorry I didn't make it in last night; had a late game. We didn't win, but it went way better than expected. Every time we play this team, we get ten-goaled (when a team is down by ten goals, they end the game early to avoid further humiliation). Last night's final was 6-2. Oh, and I scored- about time...
Today was the first day back to sch**l since before Christmas. Ugh. Most painfully long day of my life. I'm not sure how, but double art, theology, and web design (which are all easy and fun) dragged on forever, and calculus (normally ridiculously long and boring) went by relatively quickly. Like I said, painful day. The only not completely terrible thing about today is that it's not Monday... But it's still terrible.
I also found out that our lacrosse coach has quit. Last year was his first year, and apparently his last. I'm not upset at all; I honestly didn't like him. We'll have to see what happens, considering that the season begins in two months...
MRR side of life:After an attack from my GP38-2, I've made the next move in the War of Proto 2000. I ordered a Digitrax DH165L0 decoder, which is specially made for P2K units to resolve the headlight voltage issue. This won't fix the numberboard light issue, but once I attack the headlights, I'll develop a plan against the numberboard lights.I ordered the decoder from Tony's Train Exchange, because their prices were better than Walthers. I've never dealt with Tony's before, but there's no issues thus far, and I'm told that my order will be shipping tomorrow. While I was at it, I also ordered one of the Digitrax decoders for Athearn units (the DH123AT, I believe) since I needed it anyway. I'm going to need a second one, but that can wait for now.
That will probably conclude the MRR purchases for the forseeable future, since I'm a) running out of funds and b) running out of time. All of a sudden, my w**k money from the summer is quickly disappearing, and I won't be getting anything until May. Also, January is a very busy month with hockey, so free time will be limited. February is a relatively quiet month, so maybe a few very small purchases then, just to keep progress moving. Then, lacrosse starts six days a week from the beginning of March to mid-May. Then, it's finals, graduation, and summer! The only downside of summer is that I'm down the shore, which means no layout, but at least I'll be w**king and making train money. Then, college starts in the fall...
Anyway, THAT's enough from me for now. I'll be hanging around the RC for a bit.
-Joe
After a short break, more progress can finally be seen along the Lackawanna Cutoff, where service is being restored for seven miles to Andover. Rail can be seen along the center of the ties, but has yet to be laid. A week before Christmas, a rail train was brought in with thirty segments of continuous welded rail for the Cutoff. While it was being unloaded, the train was tied down on the temporary Cutoff lead at UN tower at Port Morris Yard. This was the first train on the Cutoff since a Conrail rail train pulled up the rails in 1984.

Temp here is 38, heading for the low of 36.Looks like tomorrow is going to be 62. Went to dinner at my parents place tonight. Tacos! It was my parents,my sister and her husband and myself. I had to cut up the onions. The julienne blade on the new chopper we got today diced up two large onions in less than half a minute. It took longer to set the thing up. Didn't have a chance to work on the junkyard scene. Too busy getting stuff done for myself and tending to other peoples stuff.Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
Well, its 3* here. don't know what teh wind chill is, but I am sure it is colder than that. This would be a point where we might say it's to cold to snow..but that ain't always true neither.
Well, I bet Jeffrey has his heater on high down there !
I have to call for DR.s appt for MOH...I asked Monday night if they filled out an incident report" at work when MOH's back went out. Said no, and would do so today. They did and Manager said MOH has to see a Dr.. MOH is planning on going in to work tomorrow so I have to call and get an appt ASAP. Can hardly move...and naturally store manager a ***%%$$ about building/tearing down/rebuilding a display...alll with MOH's back out of whack. Even if MOH has to leave work to go back they have a accident/ Worker's comp page to be filled out. By the Dr.
Hope CURT and wife are OK. Unless I missed it, how are they doing??
Special thoughts and prayers for ALL who need them...prayer canndle will be lit again tomorow.

galaxy Well, I bet Jeffrey has his heater on high down there !
Janie, a cup of decaf in a FGLK Mug please. Good to feel the warmth of the stove!!!
Currently 4°F outside the door here in the Finger Lakes. Coldest we have had so far this season. Feels like -8°F they say. All I know is it was chilly bringing in firewood a few minutes ago. As long as I keep it loaded, the furnace stays off as does the through the wall gas heater. Both cats are curled up near the wood stove enjoying the radiant heat... They will both find my bedroom and snuggle in bed when the fire dies down...... I did leave the heater in the train room on low for the night. Hopefully will keep the temp in the high 50s down there....
I installed one of the torti today and laid the last of the ties I have made up and stained. Except for making up a torti unit and installing it in the last un-motored turnout and some wiring needing to be done, THAT project will come to a standstill until Kapler Lumber ships me more tie stock..... Luckily, I now have the material (I hope) to fabricate the steam turbines for the Power house and make the final needed parts for that. Then I can install them inside the building and start the scenery around THAT area. Guess I have enough to do to keep me busy.
Hope you all have a great night and stay warm! Prayers for all in need!'
Good Evening All,
9F tonight and no accumulation of snow. No museum or MRR tonight. As my wise old grandaddy once said, never put off til tomorrow what you can put off til the day after tomorrow. Spent the evening pulling the ceiling in the dining room as we can't seem to find the source of an intermittent leak. This morning the chandelier sprung a leak so that was quite enough thank you (you just can't make this stuff up you know). Any who how the Ranger is now full of drywall and I'm no closer to solving the problem though I have my suspicions about the source.
Hope Curts' missus is ok and tomorrow goes well for Lee. Catch y'all later, J.R.
Chamomile tea, please.
***J.R., hope you can solve and patch the leak. That does not sound good.
Time to watch some more of the train DVDs my sis gave me, before calling it a night.
See y'all tomorrow.
Evening All,
Just got back from the hospital. The surgery went well but about 7 PM she started complaining of severe chest pain and had low O2 sats. To say she scared me is putting it mildly but everything checked out OK. She was given a pain killer and she was able to sleep. Her O2 sats returned to normal on it's own. I think she may of passed a small clot. I felt useless just standing there. Hopefully she will still come home tomorrow.

Curt Glad to hear things went OK today. I am sure we would all prefer your wife did not need the surgery in the first places!
Ulrich 140 MPH? Dang, if we had 140 MPH winds I be getting a new house!
There is 2 ways to make money. Be honest and make a customer for life, or lie and cheat the customer one time. I prefer the first way my self. I cannot say all our stores are ran in the second fashion, from the training videos I have watched it is not the company's way.
In Larry's defenses if he told the customer the truth that the brakes are not shoot and sold them as P M then I would not fault him. But, first thing today when I got to work he told me if the brakes are Yellow, sale them brakes, don't tell them to come back in 3000 mile! Makes you wounder does it not?
Other thing that makes we wonder? Of all the brake jobs we did today, not one rotor could be turned? We charge for the pad it self, then $99.00 to install them and that includes turning the rotor and lubing the slider bolts. If they sale them rotors (note I did not say needed rotors) the labor is still $99.99?

Good Morning!
Just stopping by to say that Petra and I are safe. The night was terrible - lotsa funny noises coming from the house, squeaking, squealing, groaning and screaming. Didn´t catch much sleep until the storm died down a few hours ago. Today will be OK, but the next one is supposed to come tomorrow. Quite early in the year, we usually have bad storms not before March.
The storm caused considerable damage up north, where my parents live. Trucks were blown from the street, trees toppled and cars smashed. Fortunately, there is no loss of life to be accounted for.
Curt - good to hear that your wife´s surgery went well! Continuing for her recovery!

MAy have to shop for H2O too.
An unevetful day today I think overall.
Good morning! 21f here, warmer now than all day yesterday!
Thanks for the PM ,John(der). I can receive them just fine. I type a return message in the response box ,click "reply", and the message I typed dissappears. It's like a blank post on the forums, avatar and title present but no words or message. AAARRRGGHH!
Hope the wife is better, Curt.
After running trains with the grandson over Christmas , he told me we " need more staging tracks, Papa!" LOL! He's right, 3 aren't enough on the lower level so I'm adding 3 more. That should be plenty as the shortest will be about 12'. It helps to run'em to find all the bugs.
With the warm-up I should be able to set the trusses today on the lake home we're building up here(or down here to our friends NOTB). Then sheet the roof and get it closed in this week. Lost one of my crew to a torn achiiles over the weekend, he'll be out for a while.
Prayers for those who need'em.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Good Morning!! Coffee and an order of Biscuits and gravy please. I’d also like a couple biscuits with butter and a jar of Sorghum. Thanks. Sunny, with a high near 43. Just checked my tracking and to my surprise my guitar is scheduled for early delivery today. It hit Springfield this morning at 1238 (0038) and as of 0547 is “out for delivery”. Oh Joy. Ken- Sorry hoss. (shakes head) at least you can sleep because of your actions. Even if theirs keep you up. Again I’m with Ray. Cost isn’t always the issue when it comes to a trusted mechanic. When I say that I don’t mean just put anything on, I mean if they charge a bit more but the w**k is good and I trust them to do what you did, tell me the truth and do only what is needed, then it’s worth a bit more change. By the way, was it $225 just to mount and balance the tires? Please say no. I’m about to fall out of my chair.

Ray- I shall never hear that song without giggling again!!! “ten Lords a leaping…” (giggle) see it’s happening already.
Dennis- We have two computers. Three actually if you count the wife’s laptop. Which I suppose you would. Anyway, her laptop’s one of them wifi things so we have to have a wireless router and of course the other desktop just haaaas to be on the internet too so that necessitates a wireless router. Mine is hrd lined to it as is the other desktop. It’s the router that is the issue and it not only happens on this site. Turns out this isn’t an uncommon thing I found out.
G- So it’s been the medicine all this time?
Curt- Glad to hear all is as well as can be.
Ken- Well in defense of the rotor thing (to a point). With todays harder pads, they do grind into a rotor much more than they used to unless they use the cheaper softer pads, though they wear out faster. A rotor can only be turned down so far before you get through the hardened surface. Many times the rotor cannot be turned to allow a safe margin for the predicted life of the pads. Myself unless the rotor is warped, I don’t worry about the grooves and ripples as long as they aren’t too big. And this is a judgement call on MY vehicle. I usually replace the rotor after the second set of pads or if it feels warped through the pedal. However from a business standpoint, turning a rotor to remove all grooves is probably the prfered methd and not just because it may take a rotor too thin. Appearance to the customer is important too. If they paid to have a rotor turned and it has grooves still in it, some would claim it wasn’t turned and you charged them for something you didn’t do. Explaining it doesn’t work because they take it in such a way that you would just seem to be feeding them a line. I of course, only charge about $10or $20 dollars labor to replace a rotor if it’s the slip on kind where I have to remove the caliper bracket. If I don’t have to remove the bracket, then I don’t charge at all. If it’s attached more securely…. Then it’s more if I do it at all.
I only charge $10 an hour too. BUT I have no overhead, no insurance no, employees AND I’m not trying to feed a family off my earnings either. It’s pretty much just beer money. Also the more I’m out of working on cars the farther I get behind on what’s going on and the less I do. My truck for instance, will probably go back to the dealer for all but the basic stuff like brakes and oil changes. AND as long as it’s under warranty, will probably have them do that too.
Things came up yesterday that kept me from cleaning up the dining room so we can put the furniture back. Imagine that. So that will be my project for today I suppose. Of course I put the Church bookwork off til today so I could get the room done and of course one of the delivery trucks for the restaurant considered Monday a Holiday so they’ll deliver today….sometime. Odd they didn’t consider the Monday after Christmas a Holiday. Then again, they are from Chicago.
Yackity today I am. Best get movin.

Have a good day all.
Good Morning All,
14F this morning and it was single digits last night. all the cars started this morning (yeah!). Still searching for the source of the leak(s) in the dining room ceiling. Found one cross threaded drain fitting on a tub and some staining around that plus a small wet spot adjacnt to another drain but between the original sub floor and the new sheathing so it's traveling from elsewhere. The drain is hard up agains tone of the ceiling joists so THAT will entail some chisel action to get clearance. I cut some inspection holes in the wall upstairs to look for the source of the second wetness so wish me luck.
Lee - speaking of luck good luck today with the "removal"
Curt - Glad the surgery went well and hope your wife has a speedy recovery with no more scares.
Jeff - not sure what looks meaner there, you or the van....
Todd - I don't turn the rotors unless they have real grooves and ridges but I do knock off the high spots on the inner and outer edge of the pad contact patch just in case the pad configutration is slightly differen (not that it ever happens, right ). On all the trucks we now use cryoed rotors to stop the warping.
Back in the shop to finish up the radiator ducting so we can ship the car to the panel beaters and carry on with other stuff (like more wiring). Catch Y'all later, J.R.
Good morning. It's 41 and partly sunny. It's looking like the high will be 62 and it will still be partly sunny.Sometime today I'll be going down to my parents place and clear all the yogurt cups out of both of their refrigerators. When I was putting stuff away after dinner last night I noticed the dates on a lot of them had expired by a long ways and I think I heard some discussion from the cups near the back about kicking out the mayo, butter and some other things. Yeah, definitely time to move them out. And if I can get some time for myself today I may be able to start on painted that junkyard scene.
