Decaf coffee, please.
Do the detail parts on (N) undecorated freight cars come off easily or are they factory glued? Been considering once again selling off some vintage cars and replacing them with cars more relevant to my layout plans, which would also come with knuckle couplers. Painting undecorated cars would be ideal for the Soylent Green Plant and Volcano Mining.
Still waiting on UPS. If I had known he would be showing up late in the day, I would have run to the groc store early.

Afternoon folks!
Flo I'll have a cup of hot chocolate to warm me up. I go sit by the stove in the back.
Winter is finally set to arrive here in the Finger Lakes and it is coming with a vengeance! Forecast now has a Warning for Severe Winter weather tonight and all day tomorrow. Forecasting somewhere between 6 and 10" of partly cloudy on the way. Skiers will be pleased! Owners of the resorts will be as well. So far it has been a zip year out there.
Dennis, glad they nabbed the arsonist! I have been reading about the fires and was wondering if it was a gang related thing? Evidently not.
I've been drying clothes and laying track this afternoon. Got a couple important items done for the MLK Service Program (needs to be at the printers very soon!) as well. A young man who was one of my students here way back (now Asst' Superintendent here) when I was teaching at the Middle School and became a friend of his Father (first as a 6th. grade teacher, and later as Vice-Principle) gave me a call this morning... He just found the letter asking for donations to the Scholarship Fund and realized he hasn't given his yearly donation yet... So he popped over with it so I could get his name on the donor list. His sister was an MLK Scholarship winner a few years back.
Getting very dark outside, clouds moving in, so I'm going back into hiding down cellar for a while! Snow just arrived as I was typing the sentence.....

Over here, Ulrich, it may STILL be a holiday for some. If the holiday actually falls on a Saturday, Friday is often considered the "holiday". and If it actually falls on a Sunday, then Monday is considered the "holiday". To many complained that it "wasn't fair" that the holiday fell on their regular day off, and they "should get an extra day off with pay" for the holiday!
Hence, that, and the reason that the Rose Parade was to NEVER be held on a Sunday in all it's run, is why the parade is today.
Well, watching "Selling Spelling Manor" Candy Spelling is selling hers and Arron Spelling's house,,,for a cool $150,000,000.00 Yep that's a cool $150 Miliion dollars. THey expect a Billionaire to buy it. Must be nice.
THink of the train rooms one could have in a HUGE manor like that!!!!! {DO I work on the layout in the blue room {note: "sky blue"} in the East wing today, or the One in the Red ROom in the West wing???}

V8Vega See the Rose Parade on TV to see our weather. You have to be willing to put up with constant tax increases in order to enjoy our weather. The party in power here is so intrenched that won't change in my lifetime. They caught the Hollywood arsonist, police say no question they have the right man. 55 fires, terrable damage and heartache. Completely random, he used small BBQ starter cubes and would drop them in cars. It took a few minutes for the fire to get going and by then he was long gone. He is a German imigrant mad because his mother here illegally is up for deportion. A federal immigration officer recognised his picture from survalence vidios. Police had his description and his van description.

Dennis - the guy must be from Berlin. Police is looking for an arsonist there who supposedly set fire to quite a few hundred cars in the meantime.

***Garry, good to see you made it back safely.
Been rethinking changes to the HO layout. Might end up finishing it as originally planned and keeping the Soylent Green Plant on my N layout. For now, going to put off any final decisions until summer. Plenty of other scenes to finish up in the meantime.
That bad finger is really sore today. Probably from pulling those starter cords yesterday, even though I only used the 3 other fingers. Won't be doing any outside work today. Oh well.

Well I tried about 5 different things including swapping the sensor chip on the board with no change. I just don't get it. I can't even get the darn signals to light up. The first thing I did today was to unhook the signal wires and test them on a cheapie DC power pack and they work that way. I guess I have to admit defeat and ask a guy at the club for help (he helped me hook up track power).

Zoe, I'll have a breakfast bagel w/ cheese and bacon, and some dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug. I'm staying right here in the back by the stove.....
Hey guys, get a load of the ladies dancing outside.... THAT has got to be cold with those skimpy outfits they are wearing...... Yep! 9 of them!
Currently 32°F here in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of NYS. THAT will be the high for the day, BTW. Nice steady breeze out there (25 to 35mph at the moment) with a bit of sunshine peeking through. Wind chill brings it down to 22°F..... Camping weather! Calling for 3 to 5" of "partly Cloudy tonight and another 3 to 5" of the white stuff on Tuesday. A welcome to the kids going back to School as well as my Son and DIL who have a good drive in the stuff to get to work (They have both been on break or vacation since Christmas Eve).
Burger Chef??? I seem to recall them. Did they morph into Burger Thing? First one like THAT we had in Canandaigua was a Carrolls. Served indigestion for 12¢ each IIRC.
I have a few things to get done for the MLK Committee today, but plan to try to finish up the area on the layout I have been rebuilding trackwork on. Hope to have the area up and running by tonight.
Have a great day!
Morning all. Chloe, I'll take a coffee and a bagel, pleasenthanks.
Today is the last day of break. Ugh.
And it's not much of a break. I have to work on a scholarship application that requires several short, but well-thought-out and personal essays. I have to do some cleaning, since my room somehow threw everything on the floor while I was away for the weekend. And then I have to leave at 4:30 for a game.
I need more time.
JR, it just seems that, to me, at least, a "high-quality" product such as this should be more or less ready to go out of the box. I know that DCC Ready can mean a lot, but to me, and from my experience it's essentially "plug in the decoder of your choice and go." I can somewhat understand the special decoder, but not the unnecessary re-wiring that is required both with AND without that special decoder. On both of my Atlas units (a GP40-2 and a Trainman genset), all I had to do was remove the jumper plugs and plug in the decoder, and I was good to go. I had a little trouble with the genset, but that was due to it blowing up even before I popped the shell off (and only required switching out the board like you would with some decoders). My Athearn Genesis is having troubles with the lighting (and was before the decoder went in). However, I bought this unit used, and it appears that someone had done some previous electrical work. I'll probably just rip out all of the wiring and replace it with the decoder harness that came with the decoder. As for the directions, that's just stupid. Quality control can't fix that.
Jeff, funny picture of the squirrels! Thanks for the laugh!
Burger Chef? Never heard of it. I could definitely go for some Five Guys, though!
Well, I really need to get going on the day's list. See ya later!

Good Morning!! Happy Second Day of January. This day has the distinction of being the ONLY day of the year that comes after New Years Day. Rumor has it Hallmark has a card in the works.
Well, I admit I don’t recall what was what on a car back in ‘81 even though that was the year I went to school to be one. Mechanic that is, not a car. But I do recall Chryslers infamous Lean Burn System that prompted many swaps back to the little Ignition Control box. Or, as most likely what happened to Jeff’s van, made an electronics hater out of the owner and he had a “good ole’ set of points” put back in. I don't rcall when that got thrown out in favor of something else either. It may have been gone by '81 too. Like J.R. said, other than the technology back step (and if you had trouble with a Lean Burner unit you wouldn‘t call it a backstep) I saw no difference in anything other than no more setting and adjusting. One good thing for the mechanic pocket wise was, they charged “Electronic Ignition slightly higher” so you made even more money cause people thought they were more complicated and harder to do and you actually had to do less. Ah the days of new things and people who aren‘t familiar. Oh wait, Jeff said they had an option back then. That I don’t recall, but I sure as heck wouldn’t say it wasn’t so.
Curt- Praying for the Missus now and tomorrow too
Yup I remember Burger Chef also.
Welp, just a couple feet left to do in the dining room. Could have had it done yesterday easy, but I admit I kinda piddled around a lot. You know, took my time, got interested in a couple SVU episodes (marathon yesterday) and next thing you know the day was over. Oh well, climbing up and down the stairs that often kinda makes you tired of climbing up and down the stairs. Miter saw is still in the basement.

Morning All,
Not much planned today except to try to get the PL signals working (fingers crossed). The house is very quiet, MOH is napping and all the animals are napping also.
The Burger Chef sign brought back memories of childhood. We had one close to where the family lived in the early 60's. One time we stopped there for dinner before going to see 2001 at the movies and they were so slow we never made it. I did not see that movie until many, many years later when it was on TV.
Enough of my yammering. Everyone take care.

Little cold here today, 28 F out side, far cry from the 16 F the weather folks where talking about.
JR The horn does not bother me, I mean it is real quite and does not do it often. If it stick on, I will pull the wire to it. I posted the question because I was wondering if the car's computer was trying to tell me something. I know, that sounds silly but with the way car computers work theses days it might be some kind of services needed warning.
See you all later.

Good Morning!!!
Today is Monday, January 2, 2012!!!
I see Jeffrey iand Bill are both up already its a late start for us here.
If you missed the history of January's name yesterday:
Middle English JanuarieLatin Januarius "of Janus"Latin Janu(s) "Janus" + -arius "ary (pertaining to)"Latin Januarius mensis "month of Janus"
Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. His festival month is January.
Januarius had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long.
EDIT: I see I got top..Breakfast is on me!
Good morning. It's 42° here and the sky is clear. The high is due to be 59° and it will be sunny.I'm up and around very early today. Just one of those cases of waking up and can't get back to sleep. The cramping problem in my left hand seem to have resolved itself and I can once again comfortably type using both hands. My typing speed is nothing the shout about, just twenty-five to thirty words a minute. I have nothing in particular on my schedule today other than getting started on painting a junkyard scene. My neck, lower back and knees ache but what else is new? I'm glad Christmas and New Years are past. Now things can get back to normal.
Good Morning ! from Tipton IN.

Time for me to call it a night. I'm typing more or less with one hand tonight. Two fingers on my left hand keep cramping up and want bend backward, so I'm trying to use it as little as possible. However it doesn't want to be left out and keeps trying to get in on the typing act. This results in more typos than I care to admit to.See y'all tomorrow.
Rob: Sent you a reply on your PM.
Evenin' folks!
Janie, just a decaf for me and a seat by the stove in back. We'll need to keep the fire going for the next few days if we are in Central NY (Ulrich hasn't yet divulged the exact location....).
We are currently at 38°F with high winds here in the Finger Lakes. Gusts of close to 45mph earlier. So far we still have electric so no limbs or trees down nearby. Could get as much as 6" of the fluffy white stuff as well in the next 36 hours. Most of it will be found in deep piles where the winds decide to let it it settle... makes for some interesting driving!
Went over to my son's house for dinner tonight. His MIL roasted a Pork Lion so we feasted on THAT, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Corn, Rolls, as well as the left over Beef BBQ I brought back over from last night. Lots of cake and other goodies for dessert.
Installed the last of the turnouts for the first area being relaid this afternoon. Have yet to get the thing working as well as it needs to yet. Should be able to tweak it tomorrow.
Prayers for all in need!!!
Hmmmmmm Methinks Ken will roar when he tries to hook up the high voltage horn to his 12v Linguini.
Joe - DCC ready leaves a lot of room for interpertation. In this case all it meant is the engine is isolated from the frame. I like my P2K stuff (and the P1K stuff also) but they are a dickens to disassemble by the directions (which as you found are not brilliant) and the boards within are not really easy either. The rest seemed more about what Digitrac did and didn't allow for. I'da thunk all the lights should have been provided for. Hopefully you didn't let the smoke out and it'll all be worth it when you're done. I think not all the plug and plays are created equal either. I had one that kept the plug too high to get the shell home so I had to trim all of it to fit. Should'a just soldered it in. All things come in time cricket. J.R.
Evening all!
Hope you all have had a great New Year so far, and THAT it has started off well.
Spent the day with family this afternoon, and now I'm finally home.
I tested out the new P2K GP38-2 before and tried to install a decoder. Let's just say THAT it went "less than stellar." For the full story (read: rant), see here: http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/t/200951.aspx
Other than THAT, not much else is going on tonight. Tomorrow should be a pretty quiet day as well, just some homew**k/scholarship applications before I have a game.
Tom, glad to hear that your wife is doing better!
Dennis, sorry to hear about the water heater troubles, but glad to hear that it's seemingly resolved!
Curt, prayers for you and YOH on the surgery and that it helps!

Ken - unlike everything else, the horn usually w..ks by grounding. You should have a horn relay that powers the horn. When the relay circuit is closed to ground it should honk. If the horn function is normal at the relay, the wire to the horn button or the horn button itself is at fault. If you can get the horn button (or buttons) off and ground the wire the horn should honk. If it doesn't, then the wire is frayed somewhere between the relay and the button. Most likely if the horn honks intermittently all by itself it is frayed or fractured where it flexes or on the slip ring on the steering wheel that allows the horn contact to turn with the wheel. If I were Jeff, and the source of the problem isn't obvious, I'd disable the wire to ground from the relay and run a new wire to a new horn button that I'd put on the dash board. Just like a fancy English car then. FYI - we'd call that fix a bodge. J.R.
Good evening. I went to my parents place for New Years dinner today. Black-eye peas and ham, cabbage, cornbread, field peas. I got up tired this morning due to all the racket last night. My nephew and some of his friends were up the road celebrating with a neighbor I choose to have very little to do with. I just don't like the guy. Anyways, they had a lot of loud music going, very big, very expensive fireworks going off and rattling my shelves and windows. That carried on til about midnight. Afterward my nephew arrived back home with some friends in tow. More loud music. Screaming and yelling. Lots of revving up of cars and trucks with very loud pipes. At 2:30 am I went out and put a stop to it. If I had to go out there again the police were being invited to attend. I already have the reputation of my bite being much worse than my bark. The party broke up pretty quickly and all as quiet. After dinner today my mother wanted to go to town to take a New Years dinner to a friend of hers then go to Stage for a few minutes. My mother, Stage and a few minutes are three things that don't go together. She and Stage go together fine but the few minutes part is impossible. The minimum is half an hour. This time it was forty-eight minutes and $181. By this time she could barely walk out to the car right at the curb and wanted to go go to Wal-Mart. I flatly vetoed that. We went to Wal-Mart any but just so I could get a Mountain Dew from one of the vending machines outside. Their prices are really ridiculous. A twenty ounce bottle of Mountain Dew now costs $2. The next stop was home.
Evening Folks!
Flo, thank you dear for the beer!
TA you seem to know a lot about cars and there computers. I bought a older 1994 Town Car and it is high miles, around 194,000 miles. One of the things that does not work is the horn. Horn fuse run's other things that do work, so something else must be wrong. Odd things is sometimes when I drive it, there is 2 quick and very soft blast of what I think is the horn? At first I thought someone bust just be honking there horn near by. But it has happened way to many time now. Check engine has never came on. Any idea's?
See you all later, Ken
