I think of my Dad today, He would have been 94 today. He passed away over 20 years ago. I miss him.
JR ... You asked about current projects. Well, I'm finally getting the non-MRR stuff out of the way. (I almost said "done". Wishful thinking.) .... On the layout, my most time consuming job as well as the least fun has been to raise the roofs on my twelve Walthers station platform shelters at Union Station. I have them close to the rails so passengers are not leaping horizontally a scale 3 feet, but then the dome cars were bumping the roofs. I am also connecting the platforms end-to-end so they are do not look crooked I have nearly completed this job..... While waiting for glue to dry on the roof project, I worked on minor items on various locomotives and cars. ... Next, I have more electrical work as I changeover to DCC. ... Meanwhile I am putting together buildings for my city's downtown area. I have completed five of the Bachmann downtown city buildings, and like them a lot.
Jeff ..... I saw the photo you posted of the SD40, and said to myself, that was originally a CN unit. Snow shields behind the cab and bell placement were clues. I googled the locomotive, and yes, it was a CN unit. Looks good with Old Glory on it....... ooops ... Hello Canadians. .... I suppose the snow shields have little value in KCS territory.
CN Charlie ... Good to see you, too. I have a copy of the Classic Trains issue with the 4-8-4's. Nice locomotives. My passenger steam locos are 4-8-2's however.
Galaxy ... Prayers for you. You have me concerned about your back. You said you doubt anything can be done. I certainly hope that is not the case. I'm not sure of the details of your case of course. However, I would suggest that you not give up. I would suggest (if you have not done so already) going to a large hospital affiliated with a major university to get a second opinion. Surgeons at a top-rated hospital may be able to rebuild the spine. Then, with physical therapy after surgery, you may be able restore your ability to function normally. You do not deserve all the pain along with a lower quality of life. ..... I am speaking from experience. Now, it has been over twenty years since my back was injured by a drunk driver who hit me at 50 mph. Surgeries were able to rebuild each of the broken vertebrae and fix other stuff, too. After recovery from that, I went through physical therapy. My back was about 80 to 90 % restored to normal, and I am very thankful for that. Yes, it still hurts sometimes, but I can live with it. Of course, that was over 20 years ago, and medical procedures are more advanced today. ... Also, I have experiences with a univerity hospital (Now I go to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville for my medical problems.) and they have been very good. They have saved my life with my heart disease. ... Life is good in spite of health problems, and I am very happy about that.

Curt, glad to hear your wife is home and doing well. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and that the surgery does as intended. Sorry to hear about you skunk. Say that does sound a little odd but never mind, I know they are real pets to you.
Lee, happy to hear you are finally out of the woods on that stone situation but I just can't imagine the stent removal process involving a string? Makes me shudder just thinking about it.
Well my U2g is on its way and is supposed to be here in a couple of days. I blame it all on Classic Trains putting out that magazine on Northerns. All those photos and lots of CN's as they had more of them than any other N.A. railroad. It is iconic CN steam so how could I not have one?
Rob, that is a fine looking tractor and I bet it is fun to operate. The only tractor I've ever driven was the old Massey 44 (1950 vintage) that we used to haul around boats when I had one of those. It wasn't real fun to drive what with the exhaust blowing in your face, etc. I bet yours has power steering too.
We finally got around to downloading the 2550 photos we took on our trip last Feb. Some will have to be deleted but still with digital you can just click away and boy did we ever. Got some great shots of lions that someone in N.D. might find interesting.
Ken, sorry to hear your job isn't going as you hoped but who knows maybe the experience you are getting there can be transferred to someplace better.
Time for a little TV or maybe I'll run that FA2 I bought recently. I love the rattle of an Alco 244.

Lee Far as your friends taking the last ride around the club layout? I like the idea my self. When I was buying used train stuff from estate sales on E-Bay and fixing them. I often imaged the owner looking down from the great Round House in heaven with a smile on there faces seeing the pride and joys running again. Hum, some may be looking up from the ash pit as well.

Evening All,
I have another good piece of news. While MOH was sleeping my son helped me adjust the IR leads to the 2 PL signals that it seems I have been working on forever (my fault) and now they work in all 3 aspects. The adjusting only took about 10 minutes. I am a double happy camper tonight and the food and drink for everyone is on my tab tonight. I will try to shoot a video of them tomorrow.
On a different tack our eldest skunk is dragging his front leg so I have a Vet appointment at 3 PM tomorrow. He has been doing this for 2 days but with MOH in the hospital there was nothing I could do about it. We have him in a large dog crate to try to keep him from hurting it more. I sure hope it's minor because he is a real sweetheart.

Curt Webb Made it home with Kathy about 2 PM today. Man am I glad she is back home. She will be getting home physical therapy and a walker. I'm not sure how long that will be needed. Galaxy- Hope YOH feels better real soon. When I hurt my back it usually takes about 2 weeks to recover.

With me, even after the two tumors were removed from my spine, there is really apparently little hope my back will ever get better. APin pills and injections will be the order of the days as they pass for me.

Just back from H.D. where I picked up a tub of sheetrock mud. Ready to do some MRR'ing stuff again.
Also ordered the rest of the tiles I'll need to build the base for a wood stove. They told me the panels (forget what the stuff is called) can be screwed directly to my laminate wood floor. I thought plywood needed to be put down first? Regardless, I still have no way to pick up those panels, so this project will remain on a back burner for awhile.
Got both rear tires on the new rim for the van, so one step closer to getting it back on the road. Next up, will take the battery to local Napa guy to check out. UPDATE: The mechanic just came by. He discovered it wasn't "plugged in". Glad it was something that simple. Whew!
First problem with new tractor: heater light does not come on and it seems the heater doesn't either. That suc*s! They will send someone out to fix it.

Tee hee tee hee. Jeffrey, I was watching "Wild West Tech" the other day on TV and they mentioned that the "red light district" out there started with RR men hanging their red lights out side the brothels while they were, um, er, ah "resting" as they put it. FOr years due to the clickety-clack of the rougher tracks in those days they actually thought Syphillus was caused by the clickety-clack of the track and bouncing down the RR!!!
MOH got Dr.s orders for "light work duty". No lifting over 20lbs and no ladder climbing and no somehting else. Dr. offered time off, but we really can't afford it, MOH said. SO we took that to work adn got paycheck. Smaller than has been so i was disappointed, but next weeks will be bigger if MOH manages to work through all of tomorrow and Sat. MAybe I had the 2 weeks mixed up. Hours will shortened in the Floral dept, but Floral Mgr. sent email to front end to have MOH put on register to help add hours. New store across the street will also be stocking soon so employees wil be going there to do stocking. I had told MOh to take all OT hours they will give, but with back out of whack, I don;t know.
With back situatiion, MOH has renewed appreciation for what I go through on a daily basis! I have to call pain relief center to see if i can get in earlier than March. DOn't think they can do much..but you never know. I almost feel like I did pre-surgery of having the two tumors removed form my spine last year.

In answer to your questions Garry.
The weather has been fantastic, very mild, today it is +8C or about 40-41F. Very little snow left and they say it isn't going to change much till near the end of the month. It sure is making Winter a lot shorter for us. Have only plugged the block heater on the truck in twice and that was back in November when it was -20 for a couple of days.
With all of the flooding we had the last two springs, the Farmers are very appreciative of the mild weather as well. No snow right now for them is good news. Some of the land won't dry up for a couple more years. There are areas in the southeast of our Province that you would swear were very large lakes, with no drainage but they are agricultural land that has not been worked for the last two years.
Haven't gotten around to make that river pour yet as we are looking after my Son's Dog and cat. I don't have a door on the layout room, just an open hallway to it. So at the present I have it blocked off mainly to keep the "Garfield" looking critter out of there. Before they arrived I got the hardshell at the east end on the mountains finished and am pretty happy with the way the waterfall turned out. A little finishing up to do there.
We woke up to a chilly house this morning. Our furnace is only about 4-5 years old but was not running. I have checked everything I can including changing the batteries in the thermostat, checked breaker and wall switch. Re-programmed the thermostat etc, etc, and still no heat or blow. Made contact with the guy who installed it and he is going to come in about an hour. So I hope that is a simple fix, will let you guys know .
ROB, I really like the look of your new Farm Hand. Work will feel a little more like fun again with that new toy.

Went to see the doc this morning. Got a general checkup, EKG, blood test and urinalyses done. I'm sure they'll enjoy billing Medicaid for all that. Got all my prescriptions refilled. Too late to take the morning meds but I'll be sure to hit the evening meds tonight. I was using my mothers car today at her insistence as my old tank doesn't get good gas mileage. Maybe 13 mpg on a good day. That's OK, I enjoy driving her G6. In manual mode the acceleration is a crazy kind of wild. 0-60 in I don't know how fast but it was quick! After I left the docs office I went to the pharmacy to get the meds. That was a bit of a wait as they had a lot to get together. After I picked all the stuff up and was at the checkout I looked out the door and saw a young lady standing in front of my mothers car. I told the cashier 'Watch this'. I pressed the start button on the remote and the cars headlights flashed and it started up. The lady was caught of guard and she jumped back a couple of feet. Got home just a little after noon and I'll be taking it easy the rest of the day.Oh, and we all better get up and exercise more. It's claimed that sitting too long causes cancer!

Still storming outside. Add to that a lot of and you get a real comfortable feeling not having to go outside.
An hour ago there was something I thought was lightning, but no big boom and bang following the flash of light. It was actually the catenary in our train station having come down. The line is closed for the moment, but traffic will resume in about an hour. I pity the poor guys who now have to climb up the poles to fix the catenary.
Other than that, it has been a quiet day. Still trying to develop new chances for a job, but unless Rob needs a farm hand who can swing a big hammer, drive a tractor and build fences, I see little chances for me - oh well, what else is new?

Sheesh, talk about a crowd and a racket! Drums all over the place.... Counted 10 people hammering on them and I don't think they are John Back students either! Last day of Christmas today. Tomorrow to celebrate Epiphany I shall take down all the decorations and put them away for another year. Easy since I only put some electric candles in the windows of the house.
Zoe, I'll have a bran muffin with real butter and a cup of dark roast coffee. Yes, I'll be in the back by the stove warming up. Haven't relit mine yet this morning as I need to clean out the ashes first.

Todd, nah, we always waited for Dad to fill the bottles (even had a capping machine at the farm) We did have fun sometimes squirting milk at the cats.... Had a few that would try to catch it and drink it on the fly. It was good Golden Guernsey milk though... None of that watery Holstein stuff! (I used to get beat up when I would say stuff like THAT at the fairs.....)

Galaxy, I only get dizzy when I roll over in bed or sit under the layout and look up to do something. Well I get spells in the dentist chair when they lean me back. My ENT Nurse Practitioner says its Benign Positional Vertigo. I told her, "Right until I'm up on the roof doing something and have a spell.....!"

***Todd, you're right about the load. In time a hitch mount will be welded to the top of a bucket which a spear can be easily slid in or out of for moving hay. With all the grapple and boxblade work ahead, I'll make do this winter as it is set up. Oh, with weight of boxblade and rear tires filled, there is zero bounce or lightness with that weight out there. Not sure if it's good for the loader or grapple though???
***J.R., the Aerotrain will take the old folks to a special hotel of sorts, which will be located close to the Soylent Plant. This is not to be confused with Farmer Vincent's Motel, which will also be represented on the layout.
***Garry, it may not show up well, but I did weather the wheels going through some deep mud out in the pasture. Mother Nature can take care of most weathering tasks, so it could take awhile.
***Dennis, speaking of law enforcement, there is no shortage of them on the (HO) layout here. Most are busy along the parade route in town. That bright yellow truck has been replaced since this pic was taken.

Good Morning,
Well only a nagging sore feeling in my kidney this morning.
JR: my mother is not having a good year so far. She had a blockage in her right leg in October and they went through her groin to clear that. November she had a blockage in her left leg and they went through her arm pit to correct that one. December her right leg became blocked again and since they went through the arm pit and the groin before they had to make several incisions to clear the leg again. So she is at a nursing home in Bowling Green, OH recovering with a wound vacuum when she was told yesterday two of the nurses are home with Scabies. Now all the patients and staff of the nursing home have to be treated and showered in the next 48 hours. Her surgeon is going to treat her injured leg and seal it with a clear wrap then the nursing home is going to treat the rest of her to prevent the spread of scabies. In essence the nursing home is in a modified quarantine until everyone can be treated and examined.
Ken, no sorry I didn’t, but I could make one out of clay, LOL. To be rather disgusting: I have a friend that is a member of a big HO-scale club. He is a mortician by trade so every now and then you might see deceased members of the club go by riding on the rails. Not in the form of scale people or their name immortalized on passenger cars, but sealed 35mm camera containers with some of their ashes inside.
Jeff, I would say a little insight might be an understatement. I appreciate everyone’s well wishes over the last 3 weeks.

But one thing I do know, pulling that rotor has to help pay for the mortgage, the lights, the insurance the guy who pulled the rotor, the guy who sold it, the guy who ordered it, your salary, plus who knows what else and yes the guy who owns the place wants a piece of the pie too. Prices go up my friend. I’m not saying they are great prices and the place is as honest as we want to think Abe Lincoln was (hey, he was married for a long time. He couldn‘t have been that honest and stayed married), just saying look around at what we pay for things now. Most is labor cost. But what are ya gonna do, tell the workers, no you’re never gettin a raise? THAT, however, does not excuse the other issues. Speaking of Ray- I’d heard that! (points finger ) Oops, sorry, that came out louder than I’d planned. I remember being told just what you said, Many nursery rhymes and little ditty songs and stuff was relaying or…oh how would you say, satirizing real life events or people. You know what I mean. Kinda like the Looney Tunes of the Middle Ages.
AS for the Dealership as opposed to private shops or chains. Personally, I’d go to a dealership over a chain for several reasons, but I’d rather not say because not all shops even within a chain are the same. Some may be quite good and fair. As for the local privately owned shops, there are less and less of them around here anymore and they usually w**k on the cars that are older. Wherever you take your car, the most important thing you are paying for is trust.
Rob- Looks like you made a good purchase there. Though I don’t know if I would carry that round bale like that very far. That’s quite a load for so far out.
Glad all that have had surgeries and such are doing well. Galaxy please know YOH is in my prayers for her back as well, I know what that is like.

Welp, the guitar came in yesterday and once again I’m pleased with Musicians Friend. Came with the strings loose so I had to tune it up. No problems right? Wrong. As some of you know, the strings are tuned in pairs an octave apart….except for the B and high E (lower two) they are tuned the same. Forgot that little part. Never had a 12 string, but I knew this. Or so I thought. “pingk!” went the B string. Hm I says, maybe it was a bad string. “pingk!” went the E string. Hm I says to the dog…juuuust out of curiosity, I’ll look this up …let’s see “tuning a 12 string guitar“. Ah there we are. ….

Just a regular to go please Zoe. It continues at home. Haven't found the source of the main leak yet but the one cross trheaded fitting is definitely one. Just not the main culprit. On thecar front, the front control arms for the Aspire finally showed up so I changed them out last night just need to reset the alignment and it's good to go which is fortuitous since #2 son lost the clutch in his Focus last night (145,000 and the original clutch). It's stranded by the side of I-84 where we left it - couldn't get it to start in gear and the thing won't release so we left it as it was 11pm and I didn't feel like getting the truck and trailer plugged in and warmed up to retrieve it. Just never ends and#3 sons Focus is down with a big coolant leak that showed up yesterday. Joked to #1 son that they're breaking faster than we can fix them (which we do after hours). I have the Diesel dually plugged in now and preheating so we can go do a pick once rush hour ends. At this rate I should consider one of those ramp backs but they aren't real practical for race cars.
Curt - glad things are going better for you and the missus. Hope the schedule goes to plan today.
Lee - glad you're doing better as well. Not sure I'd be up to watching the stone circulate in a gondola.
Galaxy - hope the new meds or changed meds help out. All the stuff I have to take for BP can mess me up something rotten when we get back out to the track and I'm on my feet all day in the sun but nothing like what you have to deal with every day.
Ray - when do we see some new pics ? I'm interested to see what you came up with for a turbine design.
Garry - now that you're done galavantin' about the countryside whatcha gonna tackle next?
Rob - are you planning on using the Aerotrain for direct delivery of retirement cruises to the plant? You can't be too efficient for the good of the state you know.......

The weather guessers were wrong - the storm did not die down in the early morning hours, we are right in the midst of it. In terms of mph, it is not as bad as the last one, but there is a continuous blow of about 90 mph. Damage reports in the radio are now a mile long., mainly empty trucks on the Autobahn getting toppled. I am just glad that we don´t face power outages or risk getting hit by billboards flying around.

Jeff - the car is a model of a Royal Bavarian State Railway coach of the late 1800´s, which was used on secondary lines. It saw service well into the 1950´s and early 1960´s. Due to its short wheelbase, it must have been an experience to ride in them, being seated on wooden seats. There is no direct prototype for the loco, though. The Royal Prussian Railway Administration had a similar looking 0-4-0, but that one was never couple up with a tender. The East German Deutsche Reichsbahn couple a tender to a 0-6-0 Tank loco to increase the service range. The beast looked like this:

Rob ... The tractor looks like it will come in handy. Do you plan to weather it or keep it looking shiney and new? Perhaps, it can also lift your soylant green.
Ken ... I hope most of your work is fine, and some of the unethical stuff is not normal routine.
Lee ... I saw Ken's suggestion for a gondola load. Funny. I bet you don't want to remember it though. Glad the surgery was okay. Did you say your mother had an operation too? How was that?
