Barry, the two landfills (Two of the biggest in NYS) nearby here were originally owned and operated by the county.  Both are now rented out to Huge Garbage Corporate Conglomerates that pay $$$ to the counties and towns for the right to bring in trash from all over the Northeast and parts of Canada.  About one night out of 3 I can smell the stench from my house from the Ontario County Landfill (according to them there isn't any and we are all imagining it).  I live about 8 miles away from it.  The people who didn't have a problem about these things years ago had no idea what it would become.  We also know a great deal more about the effects of the toxicity of even household waste leachate and other stuff today.  We have huge trucks 100 or more every day traveling the roads near Geneva (and Seneca Falls).  Guess who gets to pay for the damage these trucks do to the roads....  The money they pay to the counties almost covers it, but doesn't save us much tax wise while the rich get richer!  Complex issue to say the least.  I tend to be fairly moderate actually in my ideas with the issue.  No tinfoil hat at least.

Well, Ray, that is kinda how it is down here with the Johnson CIty-Binghamton Joint Sewage treatment plant- the SMELL that is. They made them cap it off to "eliminate" the smell, but it didn't work. Hot humid summer days are the worst when you drive down the parkway as it just reeks. It also cannot really handle all the waste that is thrown at it and costs a fortune in property taxes!

As far as "other things" THe Fricking Fracking is still an issue here. There have been enough shows form real people on the Public Access Cable channel that I wish the EPA and the State Lawmakers would see. Those that were "fortunate enouhg" to get a Nat. Gas Fracking lease have complained of: the # of trucks "they said there'd be a few trucks, but didn't tell us there would be 12 trucks every hour!"; complained of traffic in small towns "it used to take 15 mins to get form one side of town to the other, now it takes 1.5 hours"; complained of "not being able to get the cows across the road to milk them on time due to the trucks"; Not being ABLE to have cows anymore as water/field/grass/hay all contaminated and had to sell off cows; complianed of not being able to get any more mortgages on their property; not being able to get Homeowners insurance anymore; complained that "they said they'd builfd a 'small pad' for the well, but didn't say it would be 300 FEET by 300FEET"; complained that they had increased electric bills due to the 'water buffalos' {large water tanks stationed at the contaminate well water houses} that qudrupled due to heating the water buffalos so it wouldn't freeze", complained that now they have to "carry liability insurance because you are considered 'In Partnership' with the gas company and are just as equally responsible for any disasters that happen to wells on your property"; complained that they said 'we will build a small access road into the well" but didn't tell us it would split our grazing fields from our milking barns and the cows wouldn't be able to cross due to the {aforementioned} trucks"; COmplained the "roads here are so bad due to the weight of the trucks and we are now responsible for paying to fix them"; complained that after taxes they "didn't get the $millions they promised us we would get after taxes and expenses"; complained that "us older lease signers aren't getting as much $$ as the new signers are getting, and we are geting ripped off"; complained that "they have ruined our land"; and complained tha "opur property values have dropped by 2/3- 3/4 instead of GROWING in value like the gas companies said",; complained that he EPA's delivery of water to the water buffalos "isn't reliable'!!!

Of course, I half don't really sympathize with them at all as they "made their bed now lie in it" as they saw $$$ signs and ran with it.

Now farmers here - who obviously haven't seen these shows are chomping at the bit to get drilling started here in TIoga County..it will ruin the county! One farmer in the Town of Barton has told the paper that "the NYS gov't and the EPA is "depriving me of the use of my property" by not allowing fricking fracking on his 242 acres. WEEEEEEELLLLL..I contend he is NOT being "deprived of the use" as it is zoned agricultural and he can FARM it!!! He has a big sign on his acreage that says "DRILL BABY DRILL'!!! All he sees is $$$ signs again!!!

Well, I have a feeling it will pass, as Obama is for fricking Fracking and wants to get it going everywhere it can-at least according to his Sate of the Union Address.....HE won't have to live with a fricking fracking well with contaminated well water, now, will he????

Of course when stuff like your landfills and fricking fracking take place, the "few who are contaminated or affect adversely are a small % compared to the 'greater good' for all the rest of the country"!!!

Sign...NOt in MY back yard!

WHAT do YOU think Ray? would you wnat Fricking Fracking in your pretty area of the state and its adverse affects like the town dumps you mention????

Ok...SoapBox down and away.

Whew!

Well, went to see my father and did some errands and then did dishes and laundry, Busy day, now tired- soon off to bed.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a decaf for the moment.  I'm heading to the back booth by the stove to get warmed up.

Been a dark, gloomy day outside all day long.  Lots of clouds, some showers, and a few stray flakes coming down.  So...  As soon as possible I headed down cellar to the layout. Big Smile  Going back down there as soon as I finish this post.  Been painting ties and rail today and taking some measurements to see how I can best accomplish what I want to do in the room with the heater.  Here is the way the layout fits in the room now (each square is one square foot):

Here is what I plan on doing.  Minimum radius curves will be 22" with a 2% ruling grade.  I will end up with 4 staging tracks on two levels.  Lower staging in the tunnel will be accessible from below the layout (don't like doing THAT but it is the only reasonable alternative).  Black colored trackage is Yard Track, Blue is lower mainline (to lower staging), and Green is the upper mainline.

As you can see I will be gaining a lot of space to move around in in the room.  The old plan after being built is very tight and has a major bottleneck.  There will be some other improvements as well.

Back to the layout!

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

 Flo, Beer please.

Won't go in to details, but why would a company take money from my commission if the tire I sold has a factory defect and it is returned with in 2 hours of installation? Plus, I made $12.00 and the exchange is going to cost me $30.00?

I am going to site in the corner both and stew for awhile.

Evening, or early morning to most folks.

The rain has eased off in the last 24 hours and most of the water has receeded, however we certainly doin't want another 100-200mm in the next week as the ground is nice and primed.

Nothing else much to report, I did find 3 WS tree kit trees so I added some ground foam and planted them on  the layout. Smile

Had a nice Italian style pizza for dinner tonight, was great, it did cost $23 though... Blindfold

I saw on the news here a bridge which had been hit by a barge in Kentucky, and was going to ask if it was near anyone, but I see it was reported a page or two back.

Rob : Enjoy the Chamomile tea, lovely stuff.

Anyway, tis 9.40pm Saturday night. Time for bed I think.

Morning All,

Took some Melatonin last night to help sleep (issues lately) and I still woke up at 2:40, 4:19, and 5:30 AMSigh. laid in bed until 6:30 then got up. Have been sleeping like this for the last couple of months which is strange because I have always been a heavy sleeper.

Sitting here after feeding the animals (they were happy to see me) drinking a cup of coffee. Today my plans are to apply cardboard strips to the front of the new section. I m thinking my old back drop will not work now (perspective is too close) so I will flip the wood the pictures are on, cut them down some then plaster from the back of the roadbed to the top of  the boards to simulate a hill behind the elevation.

MOH starts back to work Monday and I know she is looking forward to getting out of  the house. She has been driving short distances to get used to driving again.

With all the photos and talk about drag racing I forgot to say that I am going  up to Gainesville for the Friday qualifying of the Gator Nationals on March 9th.

Well I think I'm done rambling on  so everybody have a great  day.

Good morning. It's 47° and mostly clear. The high will be 59° and it will be mostly sunny.

I have a whole lot of nothing planned for today. I've been doing enough and I deserve a break today. Now my parents will probably think I need something to do and come up with bunches of 'do this' and 'do that' things.

Got two the F7-A's decaled yesterday. I went and got an early morning shot of L&A #600. That's today's photo. The roof of Ezra Johnson's garage makes a great vantage point.

Nice touch for the diner, Bill.

Chloe, I will have my coffee in an NP mug.

The nice thing about a day off is not being in a hurry.  Today we will be doing some tree clean up from the ice storm.  The power surge fried the booster for the TV antenna, so Larry will be replacing that.  Maybe I will get a little done on the framing of my car shop.

Ray,  I missed why you are changing your layout.

Later,  Sue

I'll take a diet coke, thanks.

Well just got the first part of my grain elevator in Lakeforest. It was built from a Prarie Star Elevator and a grain bin from the steel walthers grain elevator. It looks preety nice. still need some round bins, a small warehouse and store front to complete it. Unfourtantly its 28 degrees here, so the garage is at 29 degrees, not exactly operating weather, don't ya think.

Not much more is happening around here. Got my 3-mile run down to 20:45, which is down from 21:15 two weeks ago. I'll get it to 18 min yet.

Well have fun evereybody, see ya

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I need a couple cups of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug....  What's THAT?  No, no, one cup with refills is what I had in mind......... Hmm  Bring a couple sour cream glazed donuts as well so I can have something soft this morning.

Was being a good boy last night and following the directions of my dentist.  Yep!  Flossing my teeth just before I went to bed.  The floss decided to catch between two teeth and I couldn't get it out.  Tried wiggling it back and forth and up and down.  Then POP!  Major filling popped out of my tooth!  So I now have a major hole in my head.  I heard  THAT!  Don't get smart!  I'm not in the mood....

Sue, I'm redesigning the "new" room as there is a bad bottleneck with what I did, and I just don't like the way the design has a corner in the backdrop.  Doesn't look good, and can't be made to look good.  My standards keep going higher as I work the NMRA AP program I guess.  This will also open up the room for a small crew area as well.  I checked with the furnace installer and they said putting the staging where I want to will not be a problem as it doesn't extend out over the heater itself.  So, I am good to go as soon as I get the time to start tearing out the old set up.

My son just called.  He and my #1 granddaughter are on there way over so I will cut this short.

Later!

Hello

I had previously recently mentioned that our "train nut" friend's 95 y/o grandmother in FL was in the hospital and wasn't eating and had the runs. Well today he called to say that after the tests they ran yesterday on her it came back that she has cancer of the liver and stomach. SO, I ask for prayers for her and her family.  95 is a long time to live, but her ending time may be very messy and painful. As often as I/we put up prayer candles for others here, it would be nice to know we have thoughts and prayers going our way.

Thank you.

Coffee refill, please.

***Galaxy, you got it. Healing thoughts heading her way.

***Ray, if I felt better, I would tear out much of what is in my train room and start almost from scratch, all HO or maybe even O scale. That said, I'll make what I have work. Sorry about your tooth.

***Barry, judging from your eyes, it looks like you might be reaching the limit there on coffee. Then again, think I'll join you. "Hey Flo, bring us a fresh pot, please!"

Well, my new Burlington Northern Micro-Trains cars look good to me. Might have to wander down to the train room tonight and try them out on the rails. Also need to take the NMRA gauge down there and start checking some things.

Afternoon folks!00

Chloe, I'll have a bowl of chicken soup and crackers with another cup of dark roast coffee )I'll regret the coffee about 2AM tomorrow....).  I'll be the booth with Barry and Rob for a bit.

Galaxy, my prayers for your friend and his family.  I would think she could go to Hospice of some kind with the diagnosis.  They can make the end much more comfortable for her and be of great help to the family.  If she is not eating or drinking, the end be soon.....  Hopefully they can control her pain well.

Son and Granddaughter have come and gone.  The little one is getting so she can understand the work that goes into my layout and now lookes intently when I explain to her what I have been doing.  I asked her if she was going to be one of my engineers to run the railroad when it is ready.  She grinned from ear to ear and said, "Uh huh!"  Son helped me to get the wood splitter off the trailer and put over by my back shed (where it should have been put 3 months ago..) while he was waiting for some paint to dry on a project he is building.  Grandpa's place is better than his for such things as I have the spray booth.  Of course the items were to big for the spray booth so I turned on the booth, and he spray painted it over near it.  My house smells like spray can paint at the moment......

Guess I should get to doing all the things I have planned for the day.

Later!

Evening All,

I put the cardboard supports on the side facing the front of  the layout so that is ready for plastering. I have decided to plaster in the back left side by the tunnel instead of the meadow nobody can see and I put braces on the back side of the layout and cut the wood in a irregular shape for the back ground and I'm going to make it so it looks like there is a slope down to the back side of the raised track. It will make more sense as I post progress pictures. I figure that its going to take a couple of weeks to finish all of it, with most the time needed for drying.

Galaxy- Of course I will say a prayer for your friends Grandmother.

Ray- Hope your tooth feels better.

Everyone take care.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, plate of cheeseburgers and a bucket of Coke please 'n thank-ya.

CURT: Sleeping issues 'eh? Too many late night runs at w**k?

Mr. LION: I do hope THAT lion is chasing after the scum THAT "tagged" the signal...

Well (frozen over again, with a layer of s**w on it), Stately Umscheid Manor, located at the prestigiously but not overly ostentatious corner of 8th and Ball (hence, "the 8-ball house"), is about to be invaded. Yup. BiL and three of his four child-units are enroute as I speak. Seems the Wife is going to help him with some computer/ipad/i-something type thing. The young ones will watch some sort of age-appropriate DVD in the living room. Me? I dunno. Rerun has been sequestered (he does NOT like invaders other than "grandma"). I may just hide in my office.

In RR "news," I think I may have finally caught-on to the assembly of the Intermountain PS 4750 covered hopper. I knocked one together earlier this month, am in need of decals for it though. I've got another one in the works, seems to be getting easier as I go. It's the brickenbrackenfrickinfrackin end parts THAT have gotten me in the past. Now watch, with one end to go...it'll revert back to the brickenbrackenfrickenfracken, abysmal, most deplorable situation.

Uh oh...think they may be pullin' in. The Wife is hustling around downstairs.

Have a good night peoples, best wishes to all in need (including skunks, horses, dogs...even those pesky cats and lions).

Good Evening, Flo - I'll just have a Rio Grande mug of decaf and a fudge brownie, please. Thanks!

Been gone way too long - my apologies for all the important stuff I know I've missed. I have been getting some more de-cluttering of my apartment, anyway, and some w**k on MRR structures (back to that Walthers modular/kitbashed train-truck transfer company, which is its own special 'delight' at times). And I decided that the background DPM modular building (Acme Manufacturing) wasn't long enough (but didn't want to tear it totally apart to add length to it). So I'm using other Walthers modular parts to build an annex for Acme (sorta an office, I think - haven't decided yet). I just love Walthers modular parts and how they line up just right (NOT!).. Bang Head Think they should have actual instructions that tell you how to get the column caps to line up with the brick pilaster thingees, as well as how you get the foundation pieces to line up to match the length of the wall assemblies. Mutter, mutter...

I am for now at a standstill on the pine trees project - I don't have a vise or something to clamp and hold the wire that I need to cut into short pieces for the bases of the trees (so I can store them by poking the wires into a sheet of foam until I get the layout ready for scenicking). I did manage to score a nice little printing shop and post office on deBay (old Magnuson type kit), and have started epoxying the walls together. Need to wash the walls off  before I get to painting them. Details, details...

Have managed to lose a little more weight; down from my all-time high of about 230 to now about 214 or so. Now, if I could fit walking into my crazy w**k schedule, I could burn more calories and not have to watch what I eat so much.

W**k has been... w**k. Sigh Ken, I think I'll grab a seat by you if that's okay.

Barry, I'm not sure I believe your cat's claim there about that BSOD... Oops

Ray, are you rebuilding, or adding another room to the S.L.O.W.? The plans look good. Thumbs Up Sorry to hear about your tooth/filling - think your dentist will give you a break on fixing that, since it happened when you were doing what he/she recommended on the flossing? (nah, probably not, you're right).

OzJim, hope you don't get any more rain in your area - we've had an abundance here and our ground's kinda soaked-in, too.

Galaxy, adding your train nut friend's grandmother to my Angel list.

Rob, how's your new farm vehicle doing for you? I'm guessing you have it by now, anyway.

Jeff, I was getting ready to order one or two of those 'seconds' kits of resin castings like you got, but it looks like they're out. Sad Maybe they'll have some more come next payday.

Curt, I see you're continuing to make progress on your layout. Thumbs Up

Todd, I thought you were about to reach the end of the Floor Wars about by now - ?

A belated Welcome to the new Diners, including GabeUSMC, and any others I probably have missed.

Broadway, a few weeks back we had a mountain lion/cougar was found a few counties west of here (in the Missouri Ozarks - I think it was Wayne County or Reynolds County. One of yours on vacation thisaways?

Good to see you in the Diner, SaronaTerry - got any recent photos of your layout? Loved those (miners?) shacks you built and posted a while back in here. Yeah

Garry told me they were about to send out the bloodhounds, I'd been gone so long. Guess he's out visiting grandkids at the moment (I think they were in Arizona or close by there). That bridge that got hit is close to Garry's place. I didn't cross it when I visited him, though - I had taken the interstate around Kentucky Lake to get to Cadiz. Wonder if Garry saw about the collision.

I'll be heading for home now. Hope to get back in here a bit sooner than how long the last time took me. Embarrassed

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.
