Good Labour Day morning to one and all   :  I'll have a black coffee and a Lassie Mog  please Chloë.

Was able to plant a few more trees last night - forced perspective, so they are all fairly small at this point.

CapeJim:

And hey, careful with talking about your sn*w blower already this year! Our more northern Diners may be at your door with the tar and feathers if you keep talking like that! Laugh
Not necessarily Jim - we might rather be interested in selling them to you guys! Pirate

Have you heard from Fergie for a while? Wondered what he's been MESShttp://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/Gifs/TMthingy.jpg'ing about with lately... as well as if he's been promoted to desk job, retired, or whatever.
Haven't had any contact for some time now.  Last I heard he was not a happy camper having had a slightly downward inclined sideways sort of career move.Grumpy

Curt:

Der- Yeah I know, it is just so frustrating when a company does not back their products.
I thought I had this solved, but I guess the whole mechanism for that run of GP15-1s - or the two I got at any rate was faulty. I've swapped out trucks from otherwise soft running GP 7s (same mechanism), and the 15s still run noisy.  I can't afford to buy fresh, so will have to live with it. Like the first  North American car we bought new, a Bel Aire, and Lemon right out of the box

Ray: You know what? Your scene composition is that good, the eye is drawn right in, and I didn't notice the peripherals until you pointed them out!Bow

Jeff:

We have some species of snakes that have the big roaches high on their menu, the most common being the Garter snake and Coluber constrictor snake (Racer).
...I'm just wrapping my mind around the idea of a roach big enough for a constrictor to get a good grip on!

Gary: Happy Anniversary!

Things to do. Cheers, John.

csxns- Laugh Lucky? Ever been by a body of water in Louisiana in the summer? If the humidity don't kill you first, the bugs will. Ain't much better here, they just "do it better" down there. Show offs.

I don't know, the Lake may move enough to not have real bad bug issues, but I'd be surprised.

There are enough birds and other predators here to keep the bug population cut down to size. The four biggest bug issues here are mosquitoes, ants, cockroaches and palmettos (Florida woods roach). We have some species of snakes that have the big roaches high on their menu, the most common being the Garter snake and Coluber constrictor snake (Racer). There are also lizards of many species ranging in size from a couple of inches to a couple of feet. I've found an alligator lizard in my home on more than one occasion.

Good morning, Chloe.  May I have my coffee in a NP mug, please?  This weather in the 80's is so great.  It is no coat weather.

Jim,  My job dispatching on Saturday had a steep learning curve.  They want me to do it again next month, so I must not have done too bad.  It was fun, but not as much fun as operating.  My friend who usually dispatches wasn't getting to operate.  This way we can trade off.

Ray,  Larry & I couldn't find what you edited either.  It is like one of those puzzles that you look for the differences.  Your detail is great.

We have been working on the staging area this weekend.  We have the Walthers instant buildings that are attached to 1/4" black foam, custom buildings, trees painted on the wall, and a brick retaining wall with a sidewalk.  Larry is in there drilling holes so we can wire the track.  It is possible we will get everything but the ballasting done this weekend.

Back to painting ties & rusting rails.

Sue

Good Morning!! Coffee and biscuits and gra….. Were are the girls? What’s this say? Self serve, self cook? Oh! Forgot, it’s Labor Day. Well that’s ok I’ll get it myself. The staff here deserve a day off for all they do.

Sunny, with a high near 71. Looks like it’s gonna stay in the 70’s all week. That will be great for the Williamsville Annual FALL Festival. Sponsored by the Williamsville Community Foundation. Or, as I call them…the Hens. What?… I say it with love. Funny though. Hasn’t rained since what, July? Good chance for rain on, yup you guessed it, Saturday. Only 40% but I think that’s about the highest chance we’ve had in a while. It didn’t rain here then, but since the Festival is Saturday….

csxns- Laugh Lucky? Ever been by a body of water in Louisiana in the summer? If the humidity don't kill you first, the bugs will. Ain't much better here, they just "do it better" down there. Show offs.

I don't know, the Lake may move enough to not have real bad bug issues, but I'd be surprised.

Der- Ô Thanks. Your efforts got me also to looking around my WP program again. I found all the little symbols that others have. ( I always figured they had to have some somewhere, just could never find them.) It’s no wonder I never found them before, they had them hidden! Imagine making something that useful so hard to find. I mean really, putting them under Insert / Special CharactersGrumpy. Really, how was I supposed to know to go there.

Cape Jim- Oops! Forgot. No more talk of  (looks around) sn**blowers. Glad to hear you get today off….ENJOY and relax!

What is “Southern Style BBQ Ribs”? now both Ray and Ken have done flung a cravin on me for some ribs I tell you what Dinner.

Ray-  DUH! If it’d been a snake it’d bit me. After you pointed it out it is very obvious what you did. I see why you prefer your “repair”

It’s Labor Day and, like Hanukkah, I guess I should not celebrate this holiday. Since “technically” I don’t w**k anymore,  I therefore do not deserve a rest for my toils. However, not wanting to be rude, and I do have a dog, I will try to take it easy today.

I did stumble downstairs last evening and ran a train around the tracky. No issues yetYes. I need to support the team tracks where they diverge off the main at trackbed height to surface height. Then I can use a siding without bowing the track down causing obvious ISSUUUES Confused. Othern’at, guess things on the rail front are ok, ‘cept I just don’t get down there much. I will more when the weather turns colder and I don’t have as much outdoor stuff to do I suppose. Least I hope.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

The furnace is in a long hall that is dark. When he installed the Roof Jack {AKA metal chimney}, he had to cut the ceiling and then he applied a rather small 2 halves of a "trim" around the jack.

I went looking for leaks with yesterday's " alt="Lightning" onload="resizeImage(this);" />, " alt="Storm" onload="resizeImage(this);" />, " alt="Umbrella" onload="resizeImage(this);" />. FOund no leaks, but I discovered that on the back side of the jack is a gaping hole that leads to what would be our "attic" if we had one in the trailer.

I wondered why it seemed to be hotter as I passed by, and now I know heat form the "attic" was leaking in. ANd so willl COld weather when THAT happens.

That also would not be "fire rated" safety issue. They need to put up a bigger trim ring that will block that off effectively. A little sheet metal trimed nicely and screwed in would help. SO would some fire retardent spray foam.

They didn't insulate it correctly and it's definitely not fire rated. They need to come back and make it right.

Mike Holmes would be SO proud!!!!

Good morning. It's 73° and cloudy. The high will be 82° and mostly cloudy. There's a 50% chance of rain this morning.

Winds last night were in excess of 40 mph. I know what it takes to make the corrugated steel sheets on the over-roof chatter and 40 and below won't do it. Sounded like closer to 50 mph gusts. Winds are continuing this morning. We're under a wind advisory until about 7 pm. Average speed should be 20-25 mph with gusts to 35. Already looked at the lake and the white caps are rolling over deep water and hitting hard against my parents sea wall. Anybody out there today is a nut! Nothing much planned for the layout today except some general cleanup. A good thing about this weekends storm is that it kept the young folks across the road quiet. Kinda hard to have a party in the yard with wind and rain trying to soak everything and blowing away anything that isn't nailed down. I know the wind was blowing pretty good as it blew my old gas grill over. I haven't grilled on it in many years. I just use it as a painting bench.

Jeffrey, you live by a lake lucky you,now hope your parents will be ok.Just went down to the layout, put on two CSX AC6000CW,s and backed up to the train and coupled up and when i started up the first center flow came uncoupled from a 5161, back up and coupled back on and when i started up the 9 car a tank car came uncoupled fron the 10 tank car,So i said the heck with it and ran the two motors and six cars in the house track and left the rest in the siding,Hope to get this train out tomorow.

It's like living anywhere else. Most people living by a lake are like most people living by a resort beach. The majority of them go somewhere else for fun.

Sounds like you either have coupler height issues or different brand couplers that don't work as well as you'd like. I used to have such things happen until I changed to all Kadee couplers on the cars and locos I use most. MoW cars and freight cars I don't use much get the clones.

Good Morning,

We were taking on some serious water yesterday, about 2 gallons was collected in the bucket.  I had cut a hole in the celling to see where it was coming from and it looks like somewhere near the west gutter.  It only leaks when we have a heavy rain storm, so I’m going on the ladder to inspect the downspout and soffit.

Curt I really like the back splash!

It took Tom and Lucy about 20 years to build the Elk River.  Lucy makes all the trees, now they are expanding the layout with a New England style port area in the next room.

Just in case anyone missed it: I posted pictures of my visit to the ELK RIVER logging railroad here: http://community.webshots.com/album/580819871jItFLb?vhost=community

Monrnin'

Well, Tomorrow {when everything gets back to normal} I have to call the furnace company.

The furnace is in a long hall that is dark. When he installed the Roof Jack {AKA metal chimney}, he had to cut the ceiling and then he applied a rather small 2 halves of a "trim" around the jack.

I went looking for leaks with yesterday's Lightning, Storm, Umbrella.

So tomorrow I will call,

I should have gone investigating with the flashlight when he went to put it up.

*sigh*

Roof supposed to be done Wednesday, but forecast is Travel, Storm, Umbrella I think it will have to be delayed. I will call in advance, as I don't think sealcoat put down on wet surface will bond correctly and last long if applied when wet. COuld be wrong.

well spent half the night up and down, so soon to be asleep again {i hope}.

Later

Good Morning,

just a short visit before I have to be off to the STALAG again.

I am not yet happy with my station module. The trains "running against the wall" at the end if the module just won´t look right. Maybe I´ll disguise that with a highway overpass, set slightly at an angle, but that´ll require a major re-w*rk job.

CUL & Have a good Labor Day!

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf for me.......

I am exhausted.  Almost fell asleep in a chair after dinner tonight at my son's house.  I got grill duty out there as today was his online football thingie draft...  So he was glued to his computer screen until he finished (which was half way through dessert I think).  Most of the meal was leftovers from yesterday.  The party starts at his house tomorrow at 1PM and we will have more stuff to eat all afternoon.  Somebody said something about Southern Style BBQ Ribs.....  One of the brother in laws has a family recipe that is just plain WOW! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

Drove past the FGLK yards going out to the son's house....  There sitting on the track nearest routes 5 & 20 is a Wisconsin & Southern Boxcar with tribute to 9/11....  I'll try to get a photo tomorrow if I can.  Supposed to be pouring rain all day...  may not be a good time to get a shot though.

Got home and gave a call to one of the old Teachers I w*rked with for many years at the Middle School returning her call from a couple days ago.  A few of us are getting a dept. reunion for mid September.  She had info that another one of the dept. who now lives in a Senior Center North of here wants to have us all come up to her place for a reunion (THAT saves someone having to go and pick up her actually, as she is no longer able to drive).  Anyway after a few minutes "Ma" (her nickname) says, "Hey, really liked the photo you had in Friday's Paper.....  I said, "What photo in Friday's paper."  Seems I had completely missed the page...  I got this photo published along with a few others readers have turned in over the last couple months:

Night Blooming Cereus.  Taken right in my dining room here at home....  Kinda nice to see they used one of mine for the feature.

Der, interesting, you didn't see what I did to the photo either?  I thought it was obvious....  Here is the before again.  See the black triangle on the right side of the photo.  THAT is the black fascia and black cloth around the layout....

I used the clone tool to continue the road across the tracks and fill in the black triangle, thus:

(whispers) OK, what does Ken's fat figure have to do with installing Kadee Couplers???  OH!  Fat Fingers!!!!  Huh? oh nothing Ken.....  (Gotta get the hearing aids checked....)

Couple old guys sitting on a park bench down at Seneca Lake the other day.  First one leans over to the other guy and says, "Got a new hearing aid, It's state of the art!"  Other guy says, "What kind is it?"  First guy says, "Oh about 3:30."  Second guy says, "Me too, lets go get a beer!"

Some days I feel just like them!

Have a great night!  Prayers for all in need!

Evening All,

I'm calmer now, the kids can come outWhistling. I weathered my sand towers today and we got the back splash up. It took about 3 hours, was similar to laying tile floor but no getting on the floor and little cutting. The plan is to grout tomorrow after it sets up overnight. As we were finishing up MOH mentioned she wants to change out the power outlets...to what I have no clue.

Der- Yeah I know, it is just so frustrating when a company does not back their products.

Have a good night.

Jeff, good to hear the winds have toned down a bunch in your area there. So long as the lake doesn't get too high (as you said the other day).

I'm not too worried about it getting too high. It'll overtop the dam before it gets onto the back terrace of my parents place and I'm up higher than they are on this hill I'm on. The bottom of my front step is about even with the roof peak of most of their house. The roof peak over their great room (two story height) is about even with my roof.

Good Evening, Janie - I'll have a bowl of chili with grated cheddar and chopped onions (and a little sour cream on the side to add in), a RBF, and a Santa Fe mug for after dinner, please. Thank you, ma'am!

Paul, good to hear you and Mary Ann (and the cow spa there) are safe. Guess we don't know how great those water-planes (not to be confused with those having pontoons...) are until it's your bacon that is saved by them. Whew!

Hey, CN Charlie, hang in there, your U2g will return to you before toooooo much longer... Wink (It is hard to wait on the MRR stuff, though)

Rob, AngelAngel for any and all twisters to forget how to get by your place. Rest up (in the basement, if you wanna).

Lee, awesome photos of that Elk River layout. Whoever made that one put a lot of time and effort into it! BowBow Oh, check your email - send you some info and a modification. And with all that work you put into the roof over the past few years, I'm surprised you're getting any leak. Any warranty from your last people to w**k on the roof (if it would cover your leak problem)?

Todd, I think Jerry did have a little more room than a slice of bread, actually. Smile, Wink & Grin But I'm with you about wanting to see what he'll do with all THAT new expanse of RR territory there. Yeah  And hey, careful with talking about your sn*w blower already this year! Our more northern Diners may be at your door with the tar and feathers if you keep talking like that! Laugh

Ray, good to hear you (and your cats) survived yesterday's experience. Another good night's rest and you'll be back to your usual busy self. Thumbs Up

Jeff, good to hear the winds have toned down a bunch in your area there. So long as the lake doesn't get too high (as you said the other day).

Ulrich, I hope the trains aren't moving very fast as they come into that station...WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin Looks good, even without that other portal, though. Smile

L&N Tim - better just a year than a couple of decades, as some of us have done due to various circumstances...Wink Good thing is, you have Monday off to do some MRR'ing! Yeah

Ken, I forget if that's persnicular or particular  or persnickity... Smile, Wink & Grin Best wishes with the couplers - the Athearn spring covers can be a tad difficult at times. Are you putting #5's on, or the newer ones with the 'whisker' springs?

DerJohn, I think if you consider when most RR's in this continent were built, I'm not sure we could say your remark about "No immigrants were injured in the building of this railroad" on much of ANY of them. Oops But I don't think building RR's has ever been a very 'safe' profession, has it? Have you heard from Fergie for a while? Wondered what he's been MESS'ing about with lately... as well as if he's been promoted to desk job, retired, or whatever.

It's cooling off here in Missouri - has already dropped from (I think) our high temp of 82 F (28 C) to 72 F(22 C) now, and we're supposed to drop to 56 F! (13 C) tonight. Sheesh! May want to get out the blanket tonight at this rate (I *refuse* to turn on the heat this early).

Spent part of the afternoon re-checking my MRR inventory, and found I have more flatcars than I thought (fair number of the GSC 54'-ers), plus doing some correcting of quantities on other freight cars. But between going from the computer (in living/dining room) to the bedroom, getting the tub(s) out to see which had the cars I was looking to find, going back to the living room and making the corrections on the computer, then back to the bedroom to close up the tub and put it back with the others, etc., etc..... But I found I don't need as many freight cars as I had thought - may get a six-pack of the Tichy 40' flatcars to balance out the proportions of 40's-to-50's. Found out I didn't have one RR line that I put in the inventory (had mixed the drop-bottom 50'-er with a regular 54'-er). Ah, well...

I had some paperw**k for w**k that I probably was supposed to turn in last Tuesday Oops, so got what I could get done on that, and then was thinking I had to be in the office tomorrow Sigh. However, after calling my supervisor and checking with him, found that Labor Day IS one of the (few) holidays we get at w**k. (We don't get that many at all, and some of them we have to take 8 hours of ETO for) Yay!!

So, tomorrow is free for MRR'ing odds and ends (like seeing about finishing some unfinished projects that have been sitting toooooo long). I will get by the Diner, however to see what new photos some of you have for me to drool over. Smile

Prayers for rain where it is needed (and none where there already is enough or too much), for a good (safe) night's rest, for good health and comfort, and for MRR'ing time tonight/tomorrow (uninterrupted by much of any "Honey....." Whistling

[Edit]: Well (little dry, but we're not complaining just yet), looks like I have the tab! Alright, OzJim, Ulrich, and all you insomniacs, feed's on me for those late-night snacks you were craving. Janie, I'll settle up on the tab and/or do dishes tomorrow when I get back in.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Good Sunday evening all, and Gary!

Todd:

Der- When I got married, (leans back in chair and calmly tamps tobacco in a pipe) I recall vaguely a comment my then young bride and alleged sole mate made. I believe it went something similar to this. "Now we are one. It is no longer "your problem" or "my problem". It is "our problem" We will walk life's pathes side by side. Sharing life equally...., unless one half is better than the other, then I get the best half."    Pretty much sums up our entire marriage actually.
...Oh yes, THAT Sir has the ring o' truth! Laugh BTW, I see that you've used the
(little tm thing)
a couple of times recently. SO, to save you extra keystrokes, I offer you this, courtesy of MS WORD:   You may care to save it for future re-use.Blindfold

Ulrich: On the moderator thing, I should have put a, what horrible name do they have for it? Oh yes, "emoticon" in there with the badge .gif. My bad,Black Eye sorry about that. Embarrassed For weather, we use Stormpulse.com  gives, clouds, forecast tracks etc.  Also, it lets me skim over and see what your cloud cover is or isn't Cool Have it bookmarked and in Firefox's Coffee Cup, so it loads every time I go online. (Along with thehungersite.com which is worth a look as well.)  Just saw the station module, very nice!BowLooking forward to the detailing!

Ray:

Todd?  You had trouble finding the difference?  Maybe it wasn'r as ovvious as I thought.  I do like using the clone tool.......Smile, Wink & Grin
My guess was you had brightened the area centre mid-distance - can't re-call exactly what was there but some shed roofed building with a box car or loco under it, a figure beside it? Other'n that, I'm with Todd.

Jerry: Love the new Real Estate! Glad you were able to get some more track.Thumbs Up

CapeJim:

DerJohn - great progress on your tree-seeding there! Thumbs UpAnd I like that shot of the (CP, right?) diesels on the side of the cliff - bet they had lotsa fun building that trestle! Surprise
Yes, CP I think too. I'd like to be able to say that "no immigrant workers were hurt in the building of this railroad" - but you and I know that just isn't the case!

Lee: that Elk River RR is truly a work of art. Thanks for posting.

Ken:

Heck, I hate to admit this, I did not know what CV 54 did till I got some help in the DCC section. Whistling
....like me yesterday. I wanted to fix that my MTD ran opposite direction than normal. So, CV 29 needed "1" added. Did it on the Main, but on the NCE, that doesn't show you a read out for the CV value before you alter it.Thumbs Down Guessed, and ended up mistakenly putting in a value that turned out to be below that required for the decoder to actually get any signal! (THAT's 32, I think) Read the manual, and then did it right! Now, Forward is exactly what it's supposed to be.Thumbs Up

Curt:

I went to install the dwarf that they sent me only to find out that the defective one was shipped back to me without explanation.
I'm pretty sure that's what Atlas did with my GP15-1s. they are both just as noisy as when I shipped them for repair/replacement under guarantee. Lesson learned. I'm not eating up my cash shipping stuff they don't do a thing about. There are other manufacturers.Angry

It's evening teatime , so I will have one to go, and see you all tomorrow, or failing that, "next time"Laugh. Enjoy what's left of the weekend.

Prayers for all in need.Angel

Yes they do Jeffery, problem is getting my fat figures in there with the spring and coupler centered. Guess I will try spraying the clip a part and little. Then when I get the right coupler for correct height use pliers to squeeze the top tight.

Why don't you just remove the trucks and work on the outside the loco.

On the engines I sent you I left the Kadee couplers on. The front ones on the Stewart's take a little while to get the hang of doing, but you will figure them out.

Tried "keyword was tried) to install couplers on the Old Athearn PA's. They might not get Kadee springs.

Don't those have the standard metal clip-on coupler pocket covers?

We have a wind advisory and a flash flood watch in effect here. Anybody who wants a nice breeze is welcome to come and get some of the wind. It's only 30 to 40 mph.

 Evening folks. Sigh

 Flo, beer please. Sigh

Down in the dumps today, no pro-tickler (spell check could not help)  reason.

Getting ready to BBQ some rib's, maybe that will make me feel better.

Well grill is lite, see you later.
