 Good Morning Folks.

Flo, not sure what I want to eat yet, I will take a diet dew while I think about it.

Need to go to the bank and deposit the car insurances money then check out the van I hope to get. Sure would be nice to have two running vehicles again!

Big thing today is the Drunken Fish interview (Restaurant for people that have not been following all my post). Still wonder if it is the job for me being my age. Not that I feel I am to old to do the job, just hope they don't think I am to old to do the job.

Well, now that Galaxy has been brought up, I am all so somewhat worried for him. They did have advances warning about the weather so I am pretty sure he is safe. Now, having power, that is another thing.

Well, got things to do. Sue bought me a new dress shirt (Todd, I all most left the R out of Shirt Whistling) so I got to try it on. Then make a few phone calls. Have another phone call to return about a job.

 Talk to you folks later!

Jeff- New paint job looks good! Is it gonna reflect a new paint job until you can’t stand it any more, or is it gonna get dirty right off the bat.

It's going to be a bit cleaner. For the most part the locos that carry the red/yellow/black MGRy logo are from the more or less spit and polish side of the L&A while the locos (patched or otherwise) that carry the black L&A logo or the 'Louisiana and Arkansas' on their sides do the dirty, grimy bare knuckles work that brings in money the old fashioned way. They earn it. Those with the 'Midland Gulf' logo are the pampered pets of Ezra Johnson's tourist line but once in a while one or two may be seen helping out in freight service.

Good morning. It's 69° and sunny. The high will be 95°.

Nothing much planned for today. looks like it's going to be one of those 'take it as it comes' days.

Good morning, Chloe.  Just a quick coffee before heading to work.

I finished painting the ties & rusting the rails in the staging area while Larry put in the sidewalk on top of the retaining wall & started the track bumpers.  We also started on the fascia.  Ballasting will come next.

Later,

Sue

Good Morning!! Coffee and the Breakfast Shoe please with sausage. Thanks.

Sunny, with a high near 87. Might have to close the windows, but we’re supposed to have breeze from 3 to 11mph with gusts to 16, so there may be enough to keep the house from getting too stuffy. I prefer the windows open and no AC, but as I get older, the more inclined I am to turn on the AC at a lower temp. When the inside temps get into the mid eighties, I’ll admit I’m ready for some AC. Though I prefer outside temps in the nineties.

Nothing happened yesterday. Brenda slept on the couch off and on and I, cleaned some in the train room and piddled around, but you can’t tell I was even in there except that I left the light on. I did run a train around the lower loop with no issues. It will soon have a name I hope, which I will write down. It’s kinda hard when I have nothing to go by. I’ve changed direction so many times I loose track of where I am.

Jeff- New paint job looks good! Is it gonna reflect a new paint job until you can’t stand it any more, or is it gonna get dirty right off the bat.

Today, I have to do the books for the Church and get a handle on the profit from the Chicken Dinner Saturday. Then I must go to town and do some grocery shopping for the dog. She needs another bag of dog food and while I'm there, we need a few staples like coffee ourselves. Lucky for you, you guys have never been around Brenda in the morning without coffee. I have. Twice. The second time was the scariest time in my life because I knew what was coming after I witnessed the first time. Whoa.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning All,

Back from the Glen race. We didn't get the last two races in because of lightning (can't have the corner workers out in that - they're way too exposed).   Got the trailers loaded in the rain (set up in the rain, tear down in the rain - oh well). On the drive back we passed through the newly reopened Rt 17 and it wasn't too bad looking. The river was still quite high, but the area wasn't affected too much, until we got to the town where Galaxy lives. Massive flooding evidence and lots of high water marks. Mud everywhere and evidence in places where the water had been five or more feet above the elevated roadway. Looked like a war zone in places as we passed into the Binghamton area with many areas still in standing water and the places where the water had receeded piled high with household debris from people who had had a chance to start reclaiming their lives. From Apalachia to central Binghamton, the power is still off except for the places with their own generators. I promise I will not ever complain again about the minor roof leaks and the four day wait to get power restored after the hurricane again. We were just so lucky. Hope G s ok and I'm concerned we haven't heard from him though he did say he was on fairly high ground. I'll catch y'all later as I need to get home for some shuteye.  CUL, J.R.

Good evening ...

It was good the diners could share their memories and thoughts about 9/11.

Jeff ... Your Sundown Shop does great work!

I have applied some of the ballast to tracks that enter Union Station. There still is much to do for this section of the layout.

Sad

Good Evening Diners,

Just a cool tall RBF, Thanks Girls..

I got to spend a few days at our trailer at the lake over the week-end, but that also meant a fair bit of work as this is the last visit we will have out there this year. So had to drain all systems and winterize them, Put all yard items into our storage areas and ready things for the winter blast ahead.  The temp today was in the 90s, hardly seemed like a reasonable thing to do.  However it is done and don't have to worry about it till spring.

Had to come back to town early today as I had to work at 4:00 pm;  The Governor General of Canada is here and there is a large function for him so will probably be done by 9:30pm and back to work at 7:30 in the morning.   We used to call them a quick turn..

My wife and I want to convey our sympathies and sadness in  regard to the horrors of 911. I too can remember the dyer distress we felt watching the TV in the hours following the first attack.

How does one comprehend these things.  How can some of our Humane Brothers be so warped that they don't even single out an enemy, just kill as many as you can, no matter what race, religion, even their own (so called) religion.  Truly these are Sons of Predition.

On this anniversary of this event we would like to again express our heart felt sorrow and gratitude for those who rendered such selfless service to those victims at that time, even to the giving of their own lives and also to those who are suffering long lasting sickness and illness from the exposure to all the contaminants that were there at Ground Zero.   I beseatch  the Politicians step up to the plate and make sure that these true Heros get the medical aid and attention that they so deservably require. Also may the Victims families have a lasting peace in their hearts knowing what a selfless act was given by their loved ones.   May God be with them all, always.

They will always be in our hearts and we will not forget..................

Amen.

Johnboy out..............................................Must finish work now.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf........

Had a fairly slow day out at the museum today.  A lot of people that might have come over were probably staying home in remembrance of 9 11 and many others I'm sure are waiting for next week when we start running diesels and cabooses for the rest of the season.  Had a few who said they would be bake i the next week or two to get a train ride.

At one minute to 1PM they blew one short blast on the whistles on the track cars and the trolleys at both museums.  We held one minute of silence in honor of all those who died, lost loved ones, and had their lives changed so much 10 years ago.  At precisely 1PM two longs were sounded and we went back to w*rk!

Not long after THAT we had a 911 emergency communication that there was a line of very strong thunderstorms crossing Batavia, NY and heading our way with strong winds, quarter sized hail, and lots of lightning..  The trolley and track cars were shut down for about an hour and a half while we waited.  group of us sat around while waiting for the storm to pass sat and chatted a bit about where we were and what we we doing 10 years ago today.  After we got the all clear (we heard lots of thunder and a very dark and nasty looking cloud passed just South of us, but all we got was some rain) we only had a hand full of vistors the rest of the afternoon.

One visitor today was from Napa, CA.  He came East to do some research on some trains built just after WWII.  He is a member of the Napa Valley Model Railroad Historical Society.  We had a great chat.  You get to meet some interesting people out at the R&GV RR Museum!

Hope all of you are having a good evening!

Good afternoon/evening (depending on your own time zone) Flo, I'll have a bowl of chili with some grated cheddar on it and some chopped onions, some crackers, and a RBF to wash it all down.

Watched some of the Ground Zero ceremonies (the start, anyway), heard from some survivors at the Pentagon, and saw some of the memorial site for the Flight 93 crash site this morning before I had to get ready for church. Ulrich and OzJIm, I'll second Garry's thanks to you, and AngelAngel for your cousin, OzJim. Many people forget that when the Twin Towers went down, many people from other countries also perished on that horrible day 10 years ago.

That morning, I was to lead some groups at the substance abuse treatment center where I was w**king, but most of the day (all of the morning) instead was spent watching those images, and then helping the clients process the events.

AngelAngel for all those who lost loved ones ten years ago today. A lot of people were affected (in many ways) by the catastrophes of that day.

Rob, I hope that pectoral problem goes down/away soon for you. Does your medical advisor (that'd be your wife/nurse) there have a guess as to what's causing it, or has your (official) medical person/Dr./N.P. suggested what's going on with it?

Jeff, I take it that you are helping your nephew get said new vehicle of his to where it will pass inspection as driveable? Or does that part mean you get the old one to 'play' with? Wink Man, you have quick w**kers in the Sundown paint shops! Thumbs Up

Today after church, I did some 'mortar' on my Edison Street power house, and got the smokestack cut so the round portion doesn't overlap the square base part anymore. Re-painted the edges where I cut them back. Will see about 'mortaring' the smokestack and do some more weathering on the power house tomorrow. Spent a chunk of the afternoon getting the Athearn freight cars/kit boxes into their own tubs and tried to cross-check what I had in the computer against the boxes. Think I'm still (according to the inventory on the computer) short a few cars. Will pull all the cars off the layout and see if I have any other Athearns in another tub someplace. (Persistence, Jim, persistence.) Have decided that most of my PS 2893 cu. ft. covered hoppers will be sold off (build dates are either past my RR's era, or so close to/in 1959 that they wouldn't leave me any leeway on when I date the layout, except maybe Thanksgiving 1959...). But I have a good stock of the 2003 cu. ft. (lot of ACF) covered hoppers, and some ATSF and SP 2893 covered hoppers which are only 1956 or so on the build years.

Glad I have tomorrow off (due to being on-call Friday night); will need to get the mileage check (THAT we should have got on Friday, since it's due on the 10th of each month) and run it to the bank. Have some scenery stuff coming, mostly the W-S 'white metal' pine tree types. That, and some brake set details.

Blessings and prayers for those in need of healing, comfort and rest (especially today),

Jim in Cape G.

Hey guys

Just had the grandparents leave. they came over for my birthday today. Now I am 18, considered a man, and ready to serve if Uncle Sam calls me up. Now I can make my voice heard, and not only by shouting. I'll register for those things within the next week hopefully.

9/11- I can remember everything that day. it's too painful at times. Every time I see something about 9/11, I get chills running up and down my back.

9-11-01 We will never forget.

Good Evening...

My memories of September 11th are of 15 of my classmates having jobs in that WTC...and dying. All were from the class of 1989...we found out from various sources that day..their parents, their friends, their loved ones....I will never forget that day....

On a recent trip to Lowe's I picked up a new hot-glue gun. A bigger one (Arrow TR550) that uses the standard size sticks, a pack of standard size sticks. It take two sticks just to get the gun going initially. I have two small ones that use the mini sticks but I have some difficulty using them due to the numbness in my hands. I can get a better grip on the big one and it gives me more control. I also got four 1/16" drill bits, smallest available here, a pack of brass screws that match the size of the bits, a pack of brass #4S brass flat washers. These are good for use between trucks and car bodies. A new three LED headlight to throw some hands-free light on projects. My old one is difficult to turn on/off and aim and the band is so tight it gives me a headache. Picked up another half-pint can of mis-tinted satin paint. Non-hobby purchases were a selection of SAE tools (non-metric for those who came along after cars required metric tools) for my van. My nephew was happy as he was allowed to pick and choose what he wanted from my metric tools. He walked away with about $250 worth. I told him that was his Christmas present.

In hobby news, the Stewart shells have received their black and gray MGRy colors. Sometime today or tomorrow they'll get their black/red/yellow MGRy decals.

I also took out a new membership in the Handman Club of America. I had been a member for many years but let it lapse a few years ago.

 Morning folks.

 Flo, coffee please.

When the 9 11 attack happen I was running a Midas in St Louis. We had the TV on for the customer waiting area and that is how I heard about the attack. I was stunned when the towers came down.

Morning All,

We finally made it to the Roanoke area. We went to leave Savannah yesterday and we had a car issue that delayed us 3 hours but we made it. The home we are staying out is in the sticks on a hillside but it is really beautiful. We had to drive up a very steep gravel road to get here that had me worried driving a HHR but we made it.

Chris- I remember that I first heard about the WTC while in the ER. I had just dropped a pt off and was walking through triage and the first plane had just hit. Everybody was still saying it was a small plane. I work with a EMT that was with FDNY that day. He wants nothing to do with the TV coverage. He once told me I was one of the few people he had talked to about 911 that really got it, and I consider him a very good friend. I remember watching a video shortly after 911 and it showed  a Engine crew walking to the towers and I will never forget the closeup of a FF's face staring up at the towers and you could see in his eyes that he knew it was going to be really bad, but he still went. To me that is personal courage and what makes a person a hero.

God Bless America.

Good Afternoon Gang,

it is a quiet Sunday afternoon - as if the world has come to a halt. Lots of folks I know pay a silent respect to all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack and the following wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Zoe, a blueberry muffin and a coffee, please.

I have decided to keep things simple with that station module. I have two small Japanese houses and I will order two more. Not a big deal in terms of money, it´ll be a spending short of $ 10, which I can afford. Adding streets and detail, plus a few figures should do the deed. Guess I was reaching for the stars with my idea of a highway overpass and high-rise buildings Smile, Wink & Grin

Good morning. It's 64° and mostly sunny. There's a 20% chance of rain this morning. This afternoon will be mostly with a high of 92°.

Yesterday I patched the BL2 for the L&A and I stripped the two Stewart F units. I also painted and weathered five structures The largest being a barn and the smallest being a dog house. Today, weather and physical ability permitting I'll paint both F units in the black and gray of the Midland Gulf line.

Tongue Tied Now see? That's what I'm talking about here. Occasionally, but not all the time, this happens. In the above post, the last paragraph after "Have a Great Day", was typed and posted as the second paragraph between were I was on 9-11, and the Fall festival one. When I clicked post, the way you see it is the way it posted. Strange. Then when I go to edit it and put it back to where it belongs, when I post the correction, it goes right back to where it is now. Weeeeird. But only sometimes. And sometimes it will edit back correctly, and a couple times it has taken another portion of the post an placed it someplace else with each "edit" I performed. So... I leave well enough alone today. Besides, it happens fewer and fewer times.

Good Morning!

Just a coffee...  plain black coffee.  I'm sure the firefighters, emt's, and the other emergency folks didn't have time for much more than a black coffee 10 years ago today!

I was at my Father's house to let in the carpet layers as my Father had suffered a severe heart attack 2 days earlier.  The day before his heart attack, I had been helping him move the piano out of the living room in expectation of the new carpet.  We had turned on the TV more for some background sound for my Mom when the news hit home.  We all watched in horror as the day unfolded!  My Father died a few weeks later.  (THAT is how I ended up with my 2 sweet kitty cats...)  This anniversary is a bit of a double whammy for our family.

I am heading out to the museum to be a docent today.  I will undoubtedly be pointing out our Empire State Express to visitors.  Those were put into service Dec. 7, 1941..............

Prayers for everyone today!

Good Morning!! Coffee please.

I was at work when the boss called us in from the shop to the break room TV just in time to see the second plan hit. Didn‘t get much done that day other than watch TV.

The Fall Festival was a success. It did not rain, though a couple times it looked…Whistling Confused, but it didn’t and a great time was had by all. There still are some bugs to work out of course, same with any young event. But I’m glad they used last year’s mistakes and bettered them. Some are already talking about things to do better. Now, if they could just get more people to volunteer instead of sit back and say what needs to be done.

It also sounds like our Church’s chicken dinner was a raging success also. I heard they sold out and that hasn’t happened at a chicken dinner for…well not since I’ve been able to know. They were a bit apprehensive about having the dinner uptown under the tent in conjunction with the festival due to the potential of weather impacting turn out and with the chicken dinner being rather expensive to put on, the profit margin is not all that great to begin with. It doesn't take much at all to take a loss. With all our dinners, our objective, naturally, is to make some money. We have loans to pay off just like everyone else. But our main objective is to keep the price down so a young family, or seniors, or limited incomes, or any combination, can have a nice meal as affordable as posssible. Believe it or not, at $7.00, the profit isn't that great when you take all supplies in to consideration. Of course on the purchasers end, at first they think "wow, $7 ?" Then when they start thinking and saying, three or four pieces of chicken, potato, green beans, roll, drink, AND dessert (homemade from the members of the Church and if there is one thing the ladies at the Williamsville United Methodist Church acn do, it's COOK!) plus no tip, it's a pretty good deal for prices in this area.

Hm, I didn't expect that to be so longEmbarrassed.

Welp, I, for some reason, am extremely tired. I don’t know why, it should be Brenda who is exhausted and not me. Maybe I carry that burden for her too. Probly, as that’s just the kind of guy I am. Maybe I’ll just follow the dog’s lead and go back to bed for some more snooze time.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

I am alive. Despite my, how shall I say....mis....thought out....announcement, that my wife will be in the dunk tank and if anyone pays double, I will try to dunk her myself risking my happy home. Fortunately, I missed all 6 times. Unfortunately, the guys who work for the village....decided to help. I'm not sure, him hitting the paddle with his hand qualifies as ME dunking her. At least I hope not. Odd thing, the line was longer for her than any one elseHuh?. She also got dunked more than anyone elseMischief.

I had a day off on September11th, 2001, relaxing from a longer business trip. It was a nice and warm day and Petra and I were enjoying the sun on our patio, when our neighbor´s son came over, telling us that a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the WTC. We ran into the house, switched on the television set, moments before the second plane crashed into the WTC.

I will never forget those pictures!

My prayers go out to the victims and their families, my thanks to the 411 FDNY and NYPD men and women, who gave their lives to rescue 17.410 people out of the burning WTC.

September 11th.

Ulrich and OzJim ... Thanks for the international tribute regarding 9/11.

OzJim Thumbs up and prayers for your cousin in Afghanistan.

Our journey (Shelley and I) began on September 9, 2001. We flew via American Airlines from Nashville, TN to Halifax, NS. Canada with a change of planes in Boston, MA.  On September 10th, we had a bus tour that including seeing a cemetery where some of the Titanic victims were buried. We went to Peggy's Cove which is a coastal fishing village named after a little girl who survived a ship wreck at that location in the 1800's. We were told the site of the Swiss Air disaster was nearby. Later, back in Halifax, we learned about the WWI munitions ship explosion that killed about 3,000 people in Halifax.... We learned of those tragedies not knowing about the 9/11 tragedies coming the next day. Our change of planes in Boston was where two of the hijacked aircraft departed on 9/11.

Early on 9/11, I watched the CNN news in the hotel. It was one of those slow news days, and I nearly turned off the TV. At that moment however, the regular program was interrupted with a news flash from New York City. They said a business jet hit the World Trade Center.

The TV camera showed the burning hole in the building. Obviously it was no small plane. The wing span was as wide as the building. I was somewhat familiar with the World Trade Center, because I had stayed at the hotel there for business trips to Lower Manhattan. I knew how huge the buildings were.

We spent the day watching the horrors. Seeing the people who jumped from the upper floors to the ground was terrifying. I knew how tall the buildings were.

All US airports were closed, and about 50 trans-Atlantic flights were diverted to Halifax that day. Of course, that jammed the airport. Thousands of people from European flights were stranded there.

We, too, became stranded. We tried to figure out how to get home. We asked the car rental company about driving one way to the USA, and learned it would be over $3,000. Some people were grouping together to charter busses, and we were considering that. Then I called Via Rail. We would have to wait a few days, but I worked out a trip on three trains via Montreal and Toronto to Windsor next to Detroit, MI.

We spent a few days in Nova Scotia. Canadians were so gracious and sympathetic. They flew a lot of American flags, and it was good to see Old Glory there. We met many Europeans who had been stranded there on the diverted planes.

The first train was Via's "Ocean' which departed early afternoon, and arrived in Montreal the next morning. The entire train was refurbished Budd cars including dome cars. It was almost like riding the original California Zephyr. As the train arrived in Montreal. I noticed a hand made US flag in the window of the switch tower.

In Montreal, we had only about an hour wait for the train to Toronto. It, too, was all refurbished Budd cars. In Toronto we checked into the Royal York Hotel next to the station, and planned to catch the train to WIndsor the next day.

We watched TV to catch the latest news. It prompted us to make another change in our travel plan. We intended to take a taxi from WIndsor to Detroit, but we learned the border crossings were taking about 12 hours. We decided to stay at the hotel for a second night. We changed our reservations to take Amtrak's "International" which crossed into Michigan at Port Huron. We made reservations to Flint and also made one-way car rental reservations to Nashville, and it was a reason able price.

We boarded the train in the second Toronto morning, and the trip was uneventful until we stopped in Sarnia, ON at the border with Port Huron, MI. .... Ooops ... All passengers were instructed to get off the train and board chartered buses parked nearby. We had to go though customs and Immigration by bus crossing over a bridge into Michigan. Meanwhile, the train would run empty through the tunnel and wait for all buses to meet it in Port Huron.... Well, That added a few hours to the trip. We got to Flint, and rented the car. Briefly, we visited family in Detroit, and then we drove to Nashville. We picked up our car at the Nashville airport, and we drove home back in KY.

Below are photos from the Dome car on the "Ocean".

Where was I on the morning of 9/11/01? I was 1/3rd of the way through my 200 mile newspaper route. I had just turned left off of Peavy Road onto hwy 464 heading to Rabbit Island Lane on the edge of Anacoco Lake when the plane hit the first tower. A short while later I was at Peavy's store. The owner, a fellow Native American (Cherokee/Choctaw) and I were watching the news coverage on his TV when a plane hit the second tower. I decided right then and there that the papers were going to be late that day. I had to watch what was unfolding and find out what was going on. When it was announced that all flights would be grounded immediately my friend had stated they couldn't ground them that fast. I told him to note the time and watch how fast they could do it. Forty-five minutes. It surprised me too.

Goooooooooooooooooooood Evening,

JAMES and ULRICH: Thanks guys...

Went up to Monticello this evening for the 131st Iowa Firefighters' Association Convention Parade. Behind the veterans' color guard were firefighters from across the County carrying a huge American Flag. Had I known about this earlier, the Wife and I would've been in a different/better location. The sun dropped down behind them at just the wrong time to back-light them terribly.

Shortly thereafter, the LeClaire Fire Dept. rolled by with a trailer containing a chunk of steel from a beam at Ground Zero. I'll admit it, I got a little choked up looking at it.

Tomorrow, I would like to go over to Scott County. A "rolling memorial" has been organized to visit every fire department in the County. LeClaire is one of the departments. But instead, I have to go to "A Taste of North Liberty" with a "renewable energy program." And nope, no way to go to one before the other, although I sure wish there was.

So, I'll be wearing my  9-11 memorial T-Shirt the 2002 Iowa Paramedic Specialist Class I was in charge of had made, and my FDNY cap with 9-11 Tenth Anniversary pin. Believe it or not, I actually expect somebody to take issue with these items. I don't want them to...but I just have a feeling...

Maybe having met two survivors of the collapse, maybe having a friend who lost a close friend from FDNY Rescue Co. 3 in the collapse, maybe being a fireman; I have a little different perspective on the day than some.

We shall see what we see when we see it.

Good night, and please: 9-11-01. Never forget. Never again.
