Chicken soup, please.

***J.R., lights stay on. Turn the key, no clicking. Last time the starter went out, there were lots of odd noises preceding it. Wasn't that long ago. Sigh

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I checked the wires and all felt secure.

Good thing our neighbor will deliver a couple bales of hay tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me tonight.  already had too much for supper I bet.

Eeeeuuue... There's a hairball on the floor.....  Huh?  Bill?  Why would Bill leave a hairball on the....  Oh!  Opus and Bill the cat were here from Bloom County....  Ah...  One of my all time favorite comics!

I canned 7 more pints of green beans today.  As usual one of them didn't seal, so it is sitting in the refrigerator until I feel like having string beans one of these days.  Picked a bunch of peppers and the Broccoli out in the garden and brought in another bunch of string beans for canning in a couple more days.

Also made one of my potato salads for the old dept. reunion tomorrow.  Looks like most of the old gang will be there.  Several are now well into their 80's and still going strong.  The youngest would now be about 50....  I will be transporting a dear lady from my church who has to be close to 90 (if not already there) and used to be the head of the Homemaking dept. in the district way back when.  She used to come in and substitute teach until she was well into her 70's I think.

Sunday I will be serving as car host at the R&GV RR Museum.  Hopefully I will get enough time to go over the work prepared by one of the kids who helps out there with his grandfather (who will be the Conductor most of the day) for his RR Merit Badge.  The kid is all of 14 and has one required MB and his Eagle Project to do for the rank of Eagle.  He should have it in a couple months.  The RR Merit Badge will be used towards his first Eagle Palm.  If I can get a half hour or so, and the kid has all the items prepared he needs, it should just be a matter of checking off the requirements officially.

Even managed to find an hour to do some odds and ends in the train room tonight.  There was a 18" section of rail I had to replace as there was a horizontal kink that derailed my new passenger cars.  I took off the old rail which was a transition from code 83 to code 70 hand laid rail.  I smoothed out the problem spot and hand laid track on it back 6 months ago or so.  Just needed to be ballasted.  THAT was tonight....Big Smile  Also put in a couple of pieces of cork roadbed cut to fit for a switch signal stand at a Fast Tracks Turnout I built some time ago.  Felt good to have a bit of time to fuss around a bit with the layout.

Currently 44°F outside.... Brrrrrrrr!  Tomorrow it is supposed to warm up a bit, I hope.

Have a great evening!

Good evening everyone: Some grapes, the cheese plate, and a black coffee please.

Galaxy: Glad you got power back and escaped the floods, even if there are continuing inconveniences. I'd be inclined to save the insurance for really important claims. My 2 Cents

Broome county
...not Bloom  county, with Opus and Bill the Cat?

CapeJim:

DerJohn, I like the changes (so far) on your church. That is an.. er, interesting yard maze photo there! Tongue Tied
Quite the maze isn't it? I got hat for whetting Ulrich's appetite when he was going with the catenaries!  On the church mods, I've built the steps and ramp, and am working on the hand rails. Nothing fancy. Anyone have tips for replicating the colour of pressure treated lumber in acrylics? - Never mind, I wrote that before having a good hard look at my steps and deck here at home. Then I mixed up  basically the same paints I used for the church building, plus some storm cloud grey. So, Light Yellow, Sandstone, green, black, and the SCG, a dab of this, a dab more of that until it looked about right.  Anyway, the church is ready for the layout   - so I can get the orchard planted (Saturday?) and put the church where it should go, re-format the parking lot (so there's a path to the ramp);  and landscape around it. Then I can move forward a bit in the scene, with any luck.

Jeff: Thanks for the low power soldering iron tip (as in hint LOL) for decoder work. I'll have to look into one of those.Thumbs Up Also, thanks for the Peggy links! We have a summer neighbour by that name. She phoned today, and said "This is Peggy"..."Funny" I said, "You don't sound Russian!"...She cracked up, it was worth it.Thumbs Up BTW, didn't you order steak and lobster the other day? Sorry it took so long...

Lee:

If I remember correctly the price is in Troy ounces, a little different than Imperial ounces.
...absolutely right Sir. There is a conversion calculator thingie at http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/troy-ounces-to-metric-tons.htm but quite frankly I don't find it helpful. 480 grains = 1 Troy oz is just as obscure-however accurate it may be! Maybe you're more used to working in Metric tonnes? Long story short, IIRC, the Troy oz is heavier than even an Imperial oz. This disappoints folks looking to cash in "spare" jewelry not only is there less gold than 99.9% pure, on which the price is based, but there's fewer troy ozs per trinket than the kitchen scales had one salivating over!

Rob:

Heading back to La La Land before the first rays of sunlight touch my skin and turn me to dust.
...just pull the casket lid  down nice and tight, you should be OK.Mischief
Help PLEASE!!! Ok, our chevy pickup won't start. No clicking but lights come on. Battery charges in short order, but when we turn the key, it reads dead battery as if instantly drained. Key released, battery still shows some juice. Starter was rebuilt last year. Everything else is original equip.. Suggestions please?
...to quote a character from an Original Series Star Trek episode, "I know nothing of these matters!"...but when that happened with our riding mower, it was a solenoid that had gone belly up. (OOOOh, I see JR kinda, sorta thinks that's possible, gee, who knew?Geeked)

JR: Welcome to NS, again. The line VIA uses through New Brunswick is CN's secondary route, a money loser, and liable to close. That would mean VIA going by the CN Main, shortening the trip, not just by miles, but by hours because the Main is much faster rail, much better maintained. 80mph vs 50 average speeds.

Time to post and get to bed.  The great wasp nest elimination derby stage 2 is set for tomorrow. Wish us luck.  Prayers for all in need of Healing, comfort, Encouragement, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

I got a regular type Bachmann decoder into the decoder into the BL2. I wired it the same as the F9's I did previously before I remembered that Life-Like wired the BL's backward for whatever reason. So naturally it took off backward with the Zephyr set to forward. No matter. I set CV 29 to 2 and everything's good. I still have two more decoders. A Bachmann light board type and a Digitrax DZ125. The Bachmann decoder is going into the new Atlas FP7 that's coming. It's a toss-up on the DZ125. I may put it in the Model Power GP9 or I could put an 8-pin plug on it and drop it into the Atlas H24-66, Trainmaster for those who don't know their Fairbanks Morse locos. I haven't really decided yet. Back to watching more NCIS.

Greetings from Lockeport, N.S.

I had sent a post from VIA's The Ocean but Galaxys' heating system must have blown it away into the ether. Ride from Montreal on VIA was lovely. Nice smooth rail, nice crew, good food. They had an observation car at the back of the consist open to us and I spent hours up there just watching the signals turn and the rest of the world go by. CFO rocks and booked the tour package so we had a berth with shower and meals included. After spending 32 hours from West Palm Beach to New York in a coach seat with no shower, this was almost decadent. The difference in track shape from AMTRAKs' Adirondack on the old D&H to Montreal was monster. I think before we get all involved in high speed rail we in the US should fix the rail we have so we could average even 60mph on smooth track. You'd get a smoother ride on a rodeo bull.

We got to Halifax on time (the arrival in Montreal was over an hour late between the tree across the tracks south of Plattsburgh and Canadian Immigration). Picked up our luggage and rental car Ford Focus 4dr if you please) and drove through heavy rains from Maria to my Moms here in Lockeport. Today was gourgeous if windy (probably the overrun from Galaxys' new heater) but we walked around town a bit and across the old railway trestle now a rail trail plus over to another rail trail in Jordan Falls with another bridge over the Jordan River. Very cool. Tomorrow we'll do more of the rail trail in Jordan Falls but this time with bug spray to ward off the gangs of rabid mosquitos the swarmed us today.  The wind has died down now (Galaxys' new heater must have reached the cutoff temp) and we can see across the harbour to the lighthouse on the jetty at the entrance. Very picturesque.

Hope everyone else is ok and wish Rob the best of luck cultivating that Kudzu (and hope that giant sized oxy/acetylene kit comes in before the vines engulf everything you own - even been known to snag slow moving livestock it has). When you try to start do the lights go out? If not it is most likely a bad starter solenoid. Do check the wire connections first as Jeff suggested as that is "for free".     CUL, J.R.

Rebuilt last year or not, sounds like your starter.

That has been my experience when starters have failed.

Strong coffee TO GO, please.

Back from running errands with wife. Seems my FIL is mixing TV with reality again. Let's see, he was telling us about a big woman who was looking for a man to take back to her cave. Also, she was wearing leather biker boots and would look good on the back of a Harley. At least he isn't seeing purple monsters.Laugh

The two Stewart F9's now have Bachmann decoders, a light board type in the A unit and a regular type in the B unit. The light board decoder has an LED on it so it made sense to use it in the A unit. Instant LED light without that messing around with resistors. The Proto 2000 motor presented no problem. I thought the B unit would give me a problem speed-wise as the only thing on it that's Stewart is the body and frame. Athearn motor and Proto 1000 trucks would likely cause a problem of some kind. Really surprised me when they ran together perfectly speed matched.

I've been waiting for a shipping notice from Ebay on my Model Power GP9. The seller said there might be a delay of a couple of days. That was the 13th. If there was no notice, message or smoke signal that it was being shipped I was going to start getting a case of the you know what with somebody about it. Got an email this afternoon saying it's going out today.

Seasonaly speaking, it was a strange day. Because it was forcasted to drop into the low 40's last night, I turned on the furnace before going to bed. So the furnace kicks on this morning for the first time, and later on we go to the doctor's to get our flu shots. Harbingers of things to come I suppose.  But wait, what needs to be done when we get home? Why cut the grass of course. Very, very confusing to this old body.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a blueberry muffin (bring some real butter) and a cup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug. Please and thank you!

Wow something woke me up this morning!  Sounded like a huge rush of wind outside with a loud rumble....  maybe we had another earthquake.....  What?  Oh Galaxy's new furnace.

Currently 68°F inside the house...  Feels good!  Air conditioners are off, and I will be doing some canning in a bit so the house should warm up nicely.  Outside it is a chilly 56°F with a high today of 58°F.  THAT time of year already.  Too cold for even the bumblebees THAT have been polinating my string beans and other vegies this year to be out w*rking.  Tomorrow may be warm enough for them to visit here again.

Hope to make some time to be in the train room today...  Have a long list of "to do" items so who knows.  Tomorrow is the Fine and Practical Arts dept. reunion.  i am bringing one of my potato salads, so THAT will get made today.  need to stop down to the Credit Union for some "pictures of dead presidents", and stop at the LHS to find out who nearby has a "killer" layout and might be willing to put it on tour next month for the Division Meet.

Best get a move on since it's almost noon...

Well, I've taken the decoders out of four locos I don't run anymore. Two E units that have pickup problems and two Atlas locos (GE U30C and modified SD24) that I built up for display only. So I have one Digitrax decoder (DZ125) and three Bachmann decoders (one light board type and two regular). I have a Proto 2000 BL2 and several F units (two Stewart and one Athearn) just begging for them. I don't know if I'll do all those today or not.

Good morning. It's 61° and mostly clear. At the highest today it's due to be 82° and sunny with some clouds.

Not much going on today. I have several old locos I don't run anymore that have decoders that can be used in newer ones. So I think I'll go through and see which ones can be retired for a while. Most are hard wired so that's going to be fun. Most of my display locos are DCC and since I don't run them, guess what. They'll be raided too. I have a BL2 and a fleet of F units that need decoders.

I started on my new run of antibiotics yesterday so I'm not feeling all that great. It'll take me several days to get used to them. The little battery powered soldering iron I got recently works great. It's a Weller BP645 and it set me back a whole $15. I haven't tried it with rechargeable batteries yet. It's still chewing on the three Duracell batteries that came with it. Getting the battery cover off is loads of fun. One thing's for sure, it's not going to just pop off while I'm using it. For being just six watts the little thing will sure burn the snot out of you. It heats up to about 900° real quick. It took me just a few of minutes to solder a decoder into a 70's era Atlas FP7 yesterday and that includes the time it took to desolder the original connections. Sorry if that sounds like a sales pitch. I'm just very impressed with it. I believe I'll get a lot of use out of this little thing.

He He He.

When teh furnace installer first started the new furnace to check it out, the blower motor roars to life standing next to it, and I mean ROARs. It is 5 tiomes louder than the old one. So I told MOH that.

This AM it was 67* in here, but a chilly palor over the trailer. SO MOH suggested we boost the thermostat to 68* {it is auto set for 65* at night till 9 am, then 67* for day operation.}SO MOH fired her up.

WHen the blower kicked on, MOH looked at me, then down the hall, and I had to say "I told you it was way louder than the old one!" He He He.

Even further, when it stopped, I said I had to pop my ears, MOH agreed,  and then MOH said "Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for flying our airline..." He He He.

It also blows the air about 4' to 5'  into the air up from the vents. {for those who don't know trialer vents are smack dab in the middle of the rooms...not on the outside walls}. you get blown by a blast of air for the ones you have to step/walk over!!!

Dunno, maybe it's a bit bigger than we really need for this trailer, but it sure heats up in a hurry!!

A do nothing day, except to pick up two prescriptions. We have to have all refills newly called in to anohter branch of CVS pharmacy because ours Flooded out!!! And so is closed inderteminate. It's a pain in the tukkus to drive to the other one, when ours was just 10 mins away.

Well, Talk at you all later. Maybe.

Good Morning All,

The first window salesman came out last night and quoted me almost $6K for 6 windows.  I told him thanks but I have 3 other vendors coming out to place bids.  When he left the written bid was $3K, he found the Military discount, sign out in the yard discount, the coupon from last Sunday’s paper discount, the first house on the street discount….

At first glance I thought Ken ran over his wife, I need more coffee before I read anymore posts!

Gold is very soft, so they have to add something stronger to maintain the shape of the gold. The cool Pawn Stores will run a resistance check on the item.  If I remember correctly the price is in Troy ounces, a little different than Imperial ounces.

Jim, I haven’t even made my decals yet, LOL!  Party at my house Sunday, we will be digging a 6 foot hole.

Good Morning!! Coffee and some cinnamon raison toast please. Thanks

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64.

Hm, looks like the same thing that woke Ken up, woke me up too. Actually I’ve been getting to bed about an hour or two sooner than usual, so I guess it stands to reason I’d get up earlier than usual sooner or later.

Aussie Jim- Layouts looking good!

Garry- Yours too!

Welp, turned the furnace on this morning. Probably, no, make that will turn it off here in a bit. Just wanted to take the chill off the house. Was 67 inside when I woke up. That’s just a bit chilly for me so I decided to warm things up this morn then it’ll turn off in a couple hours when I get moving around.

W**k tonight and before that….who knows. Got a few odds and ends out at Mom’s to do. I know I say that all the time, but even just sitting there, there always still seems to be things it needs done. I wish someone would say I’ll take it. Will you take cash.

Never thought I’d hear the phrase “gotta water the Kudzu” Well, unless they had to ..uh..relieve themselves.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Curfews in certain areas remain in effect, some expiring each morning at 6 AM, while one in the town of Vestal expires at 7 AM each morning.

Boil Water advisories are still in effect in some areas also.

Dry Ice and Water distribution centers will be open today.

Check computer's websites for further info.

Temp here reads at 44*, computer says low will be 37* for Owego. With a chill on the trailer, I am surprised it is still 67-68* in here depending on which thermometer your read. I had expected maybe the new furnace would kick on on it's own to see if it actually works beyond testing!!! Maybe later in the AM it will...not that I am in a rush to give teh Nat. Gas co. any more of my money!!!

A fire in a large building near here that was flooded caught fire yesterday evening. It's reduction was hampered by low water reserves in the city water supply tanks due to the flooding in the area. What will remain of the building, one will only see this AM in passing it, or on the news.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Chamomile tea, please.

Hope it will rain just a little bit soon. Would like to water in the Kudzu before it dries out (or the goats discover it).

Tractor is leaking hydraulic fluid somewhere new now. Need to wipe it all down and add another gallon or more before I can find the leak.

Have a good night all.

Good to see everyone. Looks like the diners had a good day overall.

Here are progress shots of my Union Station Tracks. The ballast in the foreground at the turnouts is still in progress. I am blending gray and buff W S ballast.

I am using European equipment to test. The deep flanges find the ballast particles still glued inside the rails. I can't run the European trains much on my tracks because the deep flanges will sometimes derail going through guard rails on the turnouts.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf for me at the moment.

Spent the evening out at the museum tonight.  Tonight was the 40 anniversary celebration of the start of the Rochester and Genesee Valley RR Museum.....  We had a short meeting accepting several new members, then enjoyed a nice piece of cake in honor of the day, and then, of course, spent the rest of the evening riding the train....  US Army #1641 one of our 80 tonners was in service pulling the Erie Caboose C254.  I rode in the cab of the 80 tonner for a bit and then spent time in the caboose.......  Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Have a great evening!
