Good Morning All,

Back from the Glen race. We didn't get the last two races in because of lightning (can't have the corner workers out in that - they're way too exposed).   Got the trailers loaded in the rain (set up in the rain, tear down in the rain - oh well). On the drive back we passed through the newly reopened Rt 17 and it wasn't too bad looking. The river was still quite high, but the area wasn't affected too much, until we got to the town where Galaxy lives. Massive flooding evidence and lots of high water marks. Mud everywhere and evidence in places where the water had been five or more feet above the elevated roadway. Looked like a war zone in places as we passed into the Binghamton area with many areas still in standing water and the places where the water had receeded piled high with household debris from people who had had a chance to start reclaiming their lives. From Apalachia to central Binghamton, the power is still off except for the places with their own generators. I promise I will not ever complain again about the minor roof leaks and the four day wait to get power restored after the hurricane again. We were just so lucky. Hope G s ok and I'm concerned we haven't heard from him though he did say he was on fairly high ground. I'll catch y'all later as I need to get home for some shuteye.  CUL, J.R.

Good Morning!! Coffee and the Breakfast Shoe please with sausage. Thanks.

Sunny, with a high near 87. Might have to close the windows, but we’re supposed to have breeze from 3 to 11mph with gusts to 16, so there may be enough to keep the house from getting too stuffy. I prefer the windows open and no AC, but as I get older, the more inclined I am to turn on the AC at a lower temp. When the inside temps get into the mid eighties, I’ll admit I’m ready for some AC. Though I prefer outside temps in the nineties.

Nothing happened yesterday. Brenda slept on the couch off and on and I, cleaned some in the train room and piddled around, but you can’t tell I was even in there except that I left the light on. I did run a train around the lower loop with no issues. It will soon have a name I hope, which I will write down. It’s kinda hard when I have nothing to go by. I’ve changed direction so many times I loose track of where I am.

Jeff- New paint job looks good! Is it gonna reflect a new paint job until you can’t stand it any more, or is it gonna get dirty right off the bat.

Today, I have to do the books for the Church and get a handle on the profit from the Chicken Dinner Saturday. Then I must go to town and do some grocery shopping for the dog. She needs another bag of dog food and while I'm there, we need a few staples like coffee ourselves. Lucky for you, you guys have never been around Brenda in the morning without coffee. I have. Twice. The second time was the scariest time in my life because I knew what was coming after I witnessed the first time. Whoa.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good morning, Chloe.  Just a quick coffee before heading to work.

I finished painting the ties & rusting the rails in the staging area while Larry put in the sidewalk on top of the retaining wall & started the track bumpers.  We also started on the fascia.  Ballasting will come next.

Later,

Sue

It's going to be a bit cleaner. For the most part the locos that carry the red/yellow/black MGRy logo are from the more or less spit and polish side of the L&A while the locos (patched or otherwise) that carry the black L&A logo or the 'Louisiana and Arkansas' on their sides do the dirty, grimy bare knuckles work that brings in money the old fashioned way. They earn it. Those with the 'Midland Gulf' logo are the pampered pets of Ezra Johnson's tourist line but once in a while one or two may be seen helping out in freight service.

Good morning. It's 69° and sunny. The high will be 95°.

Nothing much planned for today. looks like it's going to be one of those 'take it as it comes' days.

 Good Morning Folks.

Flo, not sure what I want to eat yet, I will take a diet dew while I think about it.

Need to go to the bank and deposit the car insurances money then check out the van I hope to get. Sure would be nice to have two running vehicles again!

Big thing today is the Drunken Fish interview (Restaurant for people that have not been following all my post). Still wonder if it is the job for me being my age. Not that I feel I am to old to do the job, just hope they don't think I am to old to do the job.

Well, now that Galaxy has been brought up, I am all so somewhat worried for him. They did have advances warning about the weather so I am pretty sure he is safe. Now, having power, that is another thing.

Well, got things to do. Sue bought me a new dress shirt (Todd, I all most left the R out of Shirt Whistling) so I got to try it on. Then make a few phone calls. Have another phone call to return about a job.

 Talk to you folks later!

Good morning all: Haven't been in for some days,( and I know I've missed anniversaries and such) too much other stuff - including MIL's 95th. Bd on the 6th.( and again yesterday in Truro with the kids)  I've seen the 9/11 tributes here, and there were many memorials here in the Maritimes as our airports were prime landing sites for that 45 minute "get down" Jeff mentioned. As they showed on the news last night, 47 planes came into Halifax - and any other airport large enough to handle the big jets had their share too. We were on the ferry to Prince Edward Island, there were two coaches from NY on that trip, and their passengers were all talking about something very somber/excited. So we went to look at the TV in the lounge, Big crowd around that, and we soon saw what was happening. Pretty much defined the tone of our 3 day 2 night vacation. If I may add my own tribute, here's a video. Flight 11 was to have been piloted by this man. Very moving, 15 minutes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLj4akmncsA   I set that to "Open in New Window" - but it doesn't Huh?What really gets me is the people in Pakistan and Iran who are claiming the attacks were a US / Israeli plot to have an excuse to invade Afghanistan (and Iran)Angry

Chris:

If there was a little visual thing for clapping hands...I'd stick it in here on both.
  BMG

Sue:

der, I am enjoying your scenery updates.
..and I'm enjoying updating it! Internet was down the other day, so got some more done - The trees between the track and the road.

a bit less enjoyable has been doing the road lines. It gets very hot in that "crawl space". Did some in too much of a hurry to "get out of there", the passing section lines were sloppy and not the right spacing. Wasn't happy with the result. So Sunday evening (9/11) I re-did the passing section , and started the white lines. Once the roads are to a stage I can live with,  it will be the orchard left of the road. The forced perspective means that the lines have to be not only narrower, but also paler, in the distance. I'm using a palette of line colours on masking tape, increasing the density of the yellow towards the front of the scene. Haven't got to the most intense foreground colour yet.

Ulrich: I was going to respond to your

Way too big! I must have had my head set on HO scale dimensions. It looks awful on that station module! I am not sure whether I want that highway overpass, but I lack any other feasible idea Crying
with "What happens if you cut it lengthways? How much depth do you need for it to do what it's supposed to do scenically? My 2 Cents", but I see you've changed your mind
I have decided to keep things simple with that station module. I have two small Japanese houses and I will order two more. Not a big deal in terms of money, it´ll be a spending short of $ 10, which I can afford. Adding streets and detail, plus a few figures should do the deed. Guess I was reaching for the stars with my idea of a highway overpass and high-rise buildings Smile, Wink & Grin
How do the houses work in?

Ken:

What do you folks think should I bring this up during the interview?
Only if you have a solid plan to improve that, and not in any way that would make them look "stoopid" - that is "lose face" ultra important to the Japanese. So, all in all, I'd say no. For one thing, you don't know the underlying reasonZip it!
Now, having power, that is another thing.
...that's what I think may be the case with Galaxy.

Rolling around to lunch time. TTFN.

John.

Mornin'

Zoe #2 the way I always get it and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug!

Lots of things THAT must get done today so I won't be staying long.

I too would suspect THAT Galaxy is just fine but without any power and internet at the moment.  The Binghamton area most certainly got nailed in this latest round of weather......  My pryers have been gopig out for many people I know in the Southern Tier of NYS!

Catch you all later!

HELLO!

Very quiet day in the diner I see.

Der: Nice work there, I quite like the road. How did you do it?

Hopefully my parcel finally ARRIVES today. It's been in Australia since Saturday... Can only assume it arrived in Sydney and it usually is only one day before it gets to Brisbane.

TSF ... Happy Birthday ... One day late.

Der john ... Your roads are looking good.

Ken ... Was today interview day? Hope it went well.

Bill T .... I might be passing through Indiana again. I'm not sure yet. If I am driving between here and west side of Michigan, I pass through IN. Northbound, my route would be through Evansville, Terra Haute, Indianapolis, and South Bend. Highways in order would be US 41, I-70, and US 31. Does that route go near your depot? Are there any RBF's near the depot? ... If I go between here and Detroit, i go through Cincinnati and do not go through indiana.

Working on the layout today, I am continuing with ballast. One of my final steps is to make sure I do not have particles of ballast that will be in the way of the wheel flanges. I test for clearances by placing 3 European freight cars coupled together on the track,. Then I push them back and forth holding just one of thee cars. The deep European flanges will bounce on particles  ballast glued inside the rails. I remove those ballast particles, and try again. I repeat until the flanges no longer bounce on particles of ballast. My regular wheels with normal flanges will then have adequate clearance. .

...............   knock, knock.....  Hello!  Anybody here?

Guess not.  Not even the wait staff is here?

They must have been in kitchen. I had no problem getting help to get in the door.

I was looking at a Model Power GP9 on the Walthers site today and decided I wanted it. There was however a problem. The amount of money I could spare was $40 - MAX. The price from Walthers with shipping was just a gnats hair short of $53. That wasn't going to work. Besides that the only one they offered was a Conrail unit. The closer I could get to Santa Fe the happier I'd be. I decided to have a look on Ebay and found a BNSF unit almost immediately. Price was $29.99 and with shipping came to $39.29, so I decided it was time to warm up my Ebay card for the first time in a couple of years. One Model Power BNSF GP9 {see photo below} should be in my hands no later than this time Monday. I had a couple of Model Power GP7's some years ago and if this unit is like those it should be a good runner and a descent puller with the addition of some weight. When I became disabled enough that I was unable to work (I've had to contend with physical disabilities all my life but found ways to get around them until 2004) I had to sell many of my possessions including almost all of my model railroad equipment (including my GP7's) which included equipment from Z Scale to G Scale. I didn't get anywhere near what I had invested in all of it. All I have left of my N Scale stuff are a couple of beat-up locos (Bachmann F9 and Proto 2000 SD7) and a few cars. Well, my physical problems have slowed me down and limited what I can do but they haven't stopped me yet. I'll be working on my layout and my trains quite literally until I drop.

RBF ?

If you take US 31 North out of Indy you will cross IN SR 28 about 15 mi. south of Kokomo. If you turn east on SR 28, you would hit Tipton in 5 mi. Go east to the Courthouse Square (2nd light in town), turn north on Main St. and drive about five blocks till you come to the NS tracks. The depot is on the south side of the tracks on the west side of Main St. Geeked

It is a NY Central design from when the LE&W was controlled by the NYC. There is a larger depot of the same design in Lafayette IN.

Evening, Chloe - I'll just have a Rio Grande mug of decaf and a hot fudge sundae, please. Thank you!

JR, good to see you were able to get back without a reeeeeallyy long detour. I recall that when Galaxy was last in, he said if things got bad in his area, they were going to head for a shelter possibly. So, hoping he will check back in here in a few days(week or two?) when the power gets back on in his area. AngelAngel

Johnboy, it does seem odd to be having to do that 'winterization' stuff when it's 90 degrees out - but then again, your seasons change a bit earlier up there NOTB than for us in the Midwestern U.S.(where I had to turn the air conditioning back on today - supposed to reach 94 F tomorrow, but then probably back off 20-30 degrees in another day or so). At least your doing that winter stuff now, saves you another trip (which might be needed at an inconvenient time, too).

OzJim, just about when you are ready to give up on your package, it will arrive - about the same afternoon that you decide you're gonna go run to the LHS/home supplies place! Wink

DerJohn - dang, Surprise your tiny little people need to bush hog that patch beside the road there! Smile, Wink & Grin Good progress you're making there. Like your 'roadw**k' - in iNvisible scale, and depending on how close visitors can even get to that road, they likely won't even notice any (minor) imperfections in the stripes. Thumbs Up

TSF, my apologies for being late on your Happy B-Day also! Cake Was it a good one for you?

Jeff, that Model Power GP9 strongly resembles Walthers' Trainline version. Or does MP's manufacturer the same folks who make the Trainline GP9m's? I have one of the Trainline ones (D&RGW) myself, and have been considering doing the low nose mod to another Geep I have (possibly the Athearn GP7/9, or else one of the P2K ones). Kinda like those modified noses on the earlier Geeps.

Today, I went through almost all of my wiring stuff - found out I have a lot more wire than I thought. Wish I'd got 12 gauge solid wire when I got it - the stranded stuff is a PITA to get fastened to a terminal strip. Bang Head I'd got most of my wiring stuff way back when I was looking to build the Jerome & Southwestern layout, so I'll have to consult with somebody locally about which switches to use for controlling which part of the power/turnouts/etc. (Like the momentary contact switches, some of which are normally closed, others normally open. An electrician, I am NOT!) Think I have put down everything except for the connectors (spade tongues, etc.), some of which I'll have to compare to ones still in a package to see what size they are.

Got my mileage check at the office today (after finding it actually was ready Friday afternoon...) and took it by the credit union (but not in time to avoid a NSF charge because the automatic withdrawal came through and posted today first)Bang Head). So I have more money than I would've needed, NOW...)Bang Head Sheesh!

As I was heading out for the Diner this afternoon/evening (I was turning westbound onto a bigger street), I saw this nice lonnnnnnnggg line of cars, heading eastbound. (The parade for the fair was about then headed for the fairgrounds from the east, a few blocks away - it really can fowl up traffic if anyone is trying to get across town, besides playing havoc with the streets and roads close to the park where the fair is held (about two blocks east of my place). Glad I wasn't going THAT way!

Tomorrow, back to the grind for the week, and start training the new crisis person. Not sure when my scenery order will arrive; it didn't show on the store's site as having shipped yet. What'd you say, OzJim? Yeah, it does w**k both ways about that waiting, doesn't it?Wink

Keeping those (like Galaxy) drying out/recovering from the rains in the Northeast in AngelAngel, as well as Rob - hadn't seen anything from him since that lump was giving him trouble earlier in the weekend. Also prayers for those needing a good night's rest and comfort/healing.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Everyone will be pleased to know my package arrived about 10 minutes ago!! Everything is in the box without any damage.

The two BLMA AMRN reefers I got are amazingly detailed!! I also got a Micro Trains box car from the limited edition runs which has been weathered and detailed. I also have 83 tree's to plant, though I'm going to need more soon.

Just got to wait out the day  then do some planting tonight!

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf for me at the moment.

Oz Jim, glad the package finally arrived, and glad it was worth waiting for!

I do hope Galaxy can get back on line soon.  Hope he is OK and there was no damage to his home....

I got a lot of odds and ends done today.  Canned 7 pints of string beans from the garden, picked more green beans, cleaned up stuff still setting out from the party a couple weeks ago, did some wash, and actually started to put togethr some research for my next layout project.....Big Smile  Tomorrow the car goes in for an oil change.  I will have them do a "free" 27 point inspection with a coupon they sent to see what they can come up with to charge me extra...... Hope you all have a great night!

Bill .. 5 miles is not far from my route. I will certainly keep it in mind. RBF has been posted in the diner meaning Root Beer Float. I think JimCG had most of them. I actually would be more likely to have coffee or coke. If I made such a trip, it my be later this month.

Galaxy ... I hope you are okay. We're concerned about you.

Rob ... I hope your Dad is getting better by now.

Cheers, everybody.

Good late evening all.  Just stopping in before heading off to bed.  I'm a wee bit tired!  Been kinda busy the past few days at w**k.  Tomorrow is also going to be a busy day as its a doctor's appointment for Amy and the baby, then we're going to go to my parent's house and have dinner with them.

I'll just have an RBF and afterwards I think I'm going to head off to do the sleep thing.

Good morning all... Well I called the guys at CMR yesterday and they apologized for the missing parts to my TT. They are sending then right out. Got the rest of the pit ties done and I hope to start on the bridge Friday. Oh I call the Hobby shop where I ordered the Walthers TT to cancel the order and he told me that since it has been a year that the credit card company wouldn,t give a refund Angry so I,m stuck with it ( if it ever get released).

Good Morning All,

Basement flooded Saturday morning and I was pretty busy swinging a swab all day.  Sunday I went to a train show in Sandusky, OH and picked up some passenger cars and small memorabilia items then came home and swung a swab for a while longer.

I have contractors coming out every night this week to provide quotes on 4 new windows in the back of the house and Saturday I have a contractor coming out to repair the storm drain line and replace the driveway drain.  I’ll be pitching in; if I dig the holes I save $1100.00, ergo I’ll be swinging a shovel to avoid any more basement swab swinging.

Jim, I haven’t had the time to play with the email, but after this week I hope to get down to train business again.  I haven’t even had time to pull the Mikado out of the box to test run it.

Ken, Sushi is good, I think the only thing that might kill you is the blowfish, I really doubt you’ll order any it’s very expensive.  I prefer the eel, but I recommend you start with a California roll and go easy on the Missabe; it’s a green horseradish dip that looks like stiff guacamole.

The new axel and labor cost $1000.00, fortunately for me it was my girlfriend’s blazer and she is a big girl and can pay for it herself.  I had to loan her $450.00 out of my driveway repair funds.

Ray, you might hear of me in your local news concerning an old bridge…

Where was I on 11SEP01,  I was on duty; I had to run to Station Ashtabula to pick up the units trailer hitch and return to Station Fairport, I stopped to pick up fuel when someone ran into the gas station to tell us a second plane hit a building in NYC.  I paid for the fuel and hit the gas to get back to my post.  One of the guys was on leave with his family in Fl and had to rent a Ryder moving truck to get back to the base.  My former brother-in-law (CTIC) and his wife (civilian Employee) worked in the Pentagon in the Navy command post that took the direct hit that day, fortunately he was at Bethesda for his physical that morning or we would have lost him.

Ulrich, you just keep doing what you’re doing, the layout looks great!

Good Morning!! Coffee please and a Denver Omelet. Thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. (was raining at 0600.)

Der- I really like the difference the foliage is making. Soon I hope to be able to get back to the RR and do some perking up myself. Say, what coloration did you use for your roads? I like that shade.

TSF- Happy Birthday late! Auto tint welding helmet! Nice. That is the kind I need and do not have. My main problem is the un intentional distance my tip travels from the target when I lower my helmet. Especially with a new rod. Whoa. I’m not exactly the steadiest guy.

Ray- Serpentine belt. I say serpentine belt. That is the new, metal shavings in the pan of a Chrysler Torque-Flight transmission.

Tim- I would think it would be Walthers that would refund to the LHS and the LHS that would refund the money to the CC.

I thought Sashimi (sp?) was the raw fish stuff. Maybe not, I haven’t tried either one.

Well, Brenda mentioned bringing her Mother to stay with us for awhile. She’s been hinting for a little while now and I’ve not really responded. Naturally I have no objection. Actually I couldn’t even if I wanted to, considering she took my Mother in. What would that make me? Oh I know, not me. That’s who. I did tell her I had one problem and that is the entourage that would come with her. I don’t want everybody to feel they have a “right” to just come bipping over and hang out in our house because she is there. Frankly I don’t trust a one. Well.., one. Her twin. She assured me that would not be an issue. I told her that is not a condition of her Mothers stay, but it IS a condition of continued peace between her side of the family and me. A somewhat unstable interaction to begin with. We’ll see. What usually is agreed to to get to the end, is not necessarily always adhered to once the objective is obtained, if you know what I mean. Therefore I am always leery of any promises or bargains made to me. Maybe’s, we’ll see’s, and I don’t knows are all interpreted as yes’s and later’s mean now and not now means in two and a half minutes. I, naturally, am expected to live to the letter of any and every little scrimp of a word or interpretation of a word I say or it is just….oh, a capital crime and the end of life on this planet. Brenda is not like her family, (well, she does get me on a few things) but I must take the bad to have the fantastic so…., what are you gonna do. Holidays cooould be spent with the dog this year.

Good morning,Chloe.  I will have a coffee in a NP mug.  Last night was climbing night, so no layout time.

Maybe tonight we will get another fascia board up.

Off to work,

Sue

Edit:  Looks like I buy.  Coffee for everyone, Chloe.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.

I don't drink coffee. Tabasco lemonade for me please.

Great to hear from Galaxy again.

Good morning. It's 72° and mostly cloudy. We'll have brilliant sunshine later and the high will be 98°.

Well, yesterday I went on Ebay and found a Model Power GP9 I wanted for less than what Walthers wanted and put it on my Ebay card. That left my immediate funds free for use elsewhere. Well elsewhere came later when I was approached by a private party who wishes to remain unidentified (I know him but he doesn't want certain others to know that I know him). Anyways he has an Atlas FP7 he was wanting to part with but only to someone he knows will take care of it. Make no mistake, he knows the paint is going to get zapped, but as far as lubrication, normal maintenance and repairs are concerned he knows I take that very seriously. He's been to my home and has seen what goes on on the workbench and that the maintenance is performed according to a checklist. So now he has this Atlas FP7 (yellowbox) still sealed in it's original packaging and has offered it to me for $25. I wasn't about to pass that up. It'll be on it's way to me at the end of the month.

In other news I still haven't come across a suitable set of horns for the E7. The ones that are on it stand out like Ronald McDonald's shoes! I'm going to take them off and see if painting them will help. Anything will likely be better that the hot yellow that they are now.
