Good morning.

HEARTLAND DIVISION, CB&Q RR
EVERYWHERE LOST; WE HUSTLE OUR CABOOSE FOR YOU
Good Morning All,
After I dragged up from the basement last night I wrote a pretty long post only to find the plug was out of the laptop when I hit send. I know Jeff - shoulda saved it first. I don't normally lose posts so I don't cut and paste them normally.
Ulrich - congrats on your promotion or should I say condolences. I'm sure you'll do a fabulous job as moderator. Does this mean you're the first overseas moderator?
Ray - speaking of moderators, are there rules about publishing pics of the "extra" artwork on those rail cars? I'll go past the siding whereyou snapped the coal cars in a few weeks as it's on the truck route to Watkins Glen. I've also seen some covered hoppers and tank cars tied up there. More stuff for Corning Glass?
Jim - (ok, both of you) good to see you back and better to see you have time to do some model railroad stuff. Your patience is rewarded.
G - Don't think of Ulrich as an adversary, think of the honor of getting your own personal moderator. Just think of the possibilities!
Curt - I'd tell you to stop in and see some of my old stomping grounds in homestead, but they aren't there anymore. Andrew stomped them. Dons' Bait and Tackle (don't laughh they had a diner attached and not in the bait shop) had the best breakfasts ever. Especially compared to the swill the air force was serving over at the airbase. Speaking of large reptiles, the gators used to crawl up on the road to the antenna site on the edge of the swamp and mid watch was always an adventure swerving to avoid them on the way in. We won't talk about what happened when the water rose and we were the highest ground for all the snakes, spiders and creepy/crawleys in South Florida. It was right out of a creature feature.
Jeff - the B unit looks nice F3 - F7 awww they all look the same after the early swoopy E3-6's. Probably why i prefer the smoky old Alcos and especially the DL109. If I come across a decent looking shell lying around I'll let you know. Try to take it a little easy especially in the heat with all you try to do.
Ken - all you can do is hang in there. Even the bossessesses know you can't sell mattresses without employees. And salesmen that make a reasonable wage are more likely to be productive and effective. Ever been to Sears? They paid so little in the old days that you could die of neglect before anyone offered to help you or ring you up. Does your company track prospects (floor traffic) vs sales? Seems to me if you have customers you're able to close and that should be worth something in their eyes. Perhaps the suggestion box should hint that the ad campaigns aren't particularly effective?
Rob - glad your back is doing better. The new puppy is cute. Funny, we keep trying to encourage our mutts to bark less. It would help if our neighbors wouldn't let their dog out to roam at 3am.....
Paul - Hope you get some respite from the heat. Some records you can do without.
Jerry - Did I miss something or had you just gotten to the logical end of the old layout? It certainly packed a lot in a smalll space. Keep us posted on your prospects for an expansion.
Time to get busy in the back. I'll see you later. J.R.
Good morning. It's 77° and sunny. The high will be 100° and mostly cloudy. The heat will feel like 110° if not higher.
I'm sore, stiff and I can't move around well not to mention that I feel like something you wouldn't want to step in. Even my eyelids feel like they got fried. And that was with a hat and sunglasses on. I'll not be going outside today if I can help it. No layout work planned for today. In fact I'll probably go crawl back into the bed.
I wonder when the guy with the Pacer is going to realize the gas cap is on the OTHER side.

Good Morning Folks!
Is it allowed to come in?
Janie, a strong coffee to open my eyes, please. I did not catch much sleep last night - just too hot & sticky. I wish we had A/C, but that´s most uncommon in our neck of the woods.
So this is day 1 as a user moderator. Have I changed sides? I don´t think I did. This forum means a lot to me and I see the job of a moderator as a service to the community. I´d be sorry, if Galaxy now regards me as "one of them on the other side".
Before joining the MR forums, I had been a visitor to a lot of other model railroading forums, some of them without any moderation. They quickly turned into a platform for rude people, voicing their opinions in an undue way, without any respect for others. I don´t want to see this forum going down that route - it is too valuable for me.
Have a good one!
Good evening. I'll have a Klondike Bar, please.
Bill T ..... 'cause you're not here yet.
Ulrich ... How did you get the assignment, anyhow? Did you promise some strudel to Dana?
Ray .... Uh, Oh....Are you trying to get me to comment about TAHT stuff on those cars while Ulrich is here? ... Nope. I see nothing!
Paul .. The good old phone works for ordering. Good idea.
By the way ... Duke is fine. Just being a quiet type is all.
Cheers, everybody.
Evenin'!
Janie, just a decaf for me at the moment.
I almost hate to say this, but we had a high temperature today of 76°F. lasted about 5 minutes and went back down to the low 70's. Right now it is a sweet 67°F outside. It also rained almost all day. The official weather people say we got only .17" but they were saying that at noon and it rained all afternoon and evening as well. Not hard, but a gentle light rain most of the time. Sun came out for 4 minutes and 23 seconds.... I timed it. I managed not to turn on the air conditioners at all today!!! A good day all around.
Did a bit more sorting and throwing away, recycling, and putting away in the proper places. Did get to spend a bit of time in the train room writing up some paperw*rk for two scratch built buildings I will have judged for merit awards. I have to earn 4 merit awards to complete the requirements for Structures. You have to have built 12 structures for the Certificate with at least 6 of them qualifying as scratch built (90% of the parts have to be created by the modeler excluding exempt items like light bulbs and wire......). I have more than enough structures already on the layout, but only a couple I think would earn a Merit Award. Possibly 3, I will talk to the AP guy and see what he recommends.

Hope all of you have a good and restful night!

Garry I ordered that from there ad in July MR. I like talking to person that way I can get any questions answered right away.
Evening Gang:
Sorry Garry I was just trying to share the wealth. Our cup runnith over and we had to do some thing with it.
Yes we had another hot one. I had 115F here at the house, our son had 117F at his ranch about 35 miles west of us, and the offical at DFW airport about 50 miles east of us was 109F. Mary Ann and I set up a tarp to shade the front of the house. I had to drive 5 " T " posts to tie off to. In the heat it took about an hour and that was using a compressed air post driver. The ground was so hard and I could only do two posts before I had to take a break in the cool. Our pond only has about 3 ft of water left and John's out at his place is dry. The creek out there is laso dry so he is going to put in a watering tank and feed it from his well. I haven't checked our creek lately but it is feed from the towns water treatment plant so I don't think it will dry up. At 9pm it was still 105F. Boy this is getting old.
Well I'm going to head for bed. It's nice and cool in the bed room.
Good Night All
Evening, Hey Vinnie, what's with the velvet rope? I leave for a day or so to go get my passport and take care of some stuff at home and we now have class separation?
Urlich-Congrats on the job offer of moderator.
Galaxy-Hyped up on coffee much?

Evening all. Just stopping in for a RBF and a little chatting around. Been working through some stuff with my SD40-2. Its a Bachmann DCC On-Board model and is "reasonably" detailed, but needs a set of grabs to be installed and "other" detail parts, which won't be a big deal at all, so....just curious if I DO decide to do a body swap, any recommendations?
Ulrich, congratulations on your "promotion", I know that you will rock sir!
Jeff, I feel you on the heat sir, I was at w**k today and had a couple of batteries to install and when I got done with them, I just had to stop and sit down.....twas a bit warm!
Welp, guess I'm going to tool around on here and see what else is happening, might pop back in before bed.
Got into an argument with the heat today and lost. My prediction about getting cooked well-done while mowing the grass this morning was pretty close. That was bad enough. I got somewhat fried. But then I went to town to get some groceries without getting some rest first. I finished with that at about 2:20 this afternoon and was definitely feeling the effects of the heat. I had a bit to eat and drank quite a bit of water but still felt pretty bad. So about 4:30 pm I laid down to just get a little rest. Yeah! Right! I woke up at 9 pm. I feel better than I did but I'm not going much of anywhere for a day or two. I'm quite a bit redder than my usual natural red tinge. I hope it browns up nicely but knowing my luck it'll probably peel off.
On the layout front I was reminded of my limited knowledge of F unit models. What I've calling an F7B is an F3B. Should have done more research.
Evening All,
Just sitting here tonight. My parents came down today for 2 days. Called the train museum today only to find out that during the summer it is only open on Saturday. They did have some RR cars outside so we went and looked anyway. It is a old SAL depot. They had a SAL caboose, Seaboard silver streamlined club/observation car with the pointy end that you could see into and a Baggage car that you couldn't see into.
Tomorrow we are going to the Everglades National Park and have a look around. Friday vacation is done and on the way home MOH wants to stop in Tampa at McDill AFB to go grocery shopping. I am really stoked about that.
Saturday and Sunday our club is having a Open House in conjunction with a Orlando train show. The club president has asked me to help supervise at the club so my weekend is full.
Ulrich- Congratulations. I am sure you will do fine. Just remember nobody does anything wrong in the Diner.
Ken- I hope your job works out for you.
Hope everyone has a good night.

Hello fellow dinners.
Flo, Beer and a Coffee chaser please.
Boy I have been tired today, spent most of the morning and afternoon napping. Might because I did not have any coffee today, either that or sleeping on the couch. Either way today was pretty much wasted.
Work Front I have spent a good hour on the phone today with Shaun. He is not quieting or looking at this point. He is betting on the fact they will forget to change his pay from $500.00 to $400.00 a week. If I was a betting man, I place my money on them forgetting to give him the pay cut. Follow up is not this company's strong point!
I think we are both thinking on the same line, time to freshen up the Resumes. I cannot make it on my base pay alone in the summer, he stands no chances at all with a $100.00 a week pay cut. I still have some hope of staying with the company. I just need to find a part time job making around $125 - $200 a week. But if I stumble across job making $700.00 a week. Door will not hit me in the caboose on the way out!
Ulrich Hum, moderator. Do you get to ware a monocle and go Hogan! I have a lot of respect for Crandell and Tom and I am sure you will do great. Maybe you can get Bill back in the dinner.
Ken
I hate Rust
Paul ... No, you did not need to send your heat here. It's 103 F now at Ft Campbell weather station. Perhaps, they are training for another Iraq mission with the heat.
Ulrich ... I'm not trying to rush my b'day. It is one month away. We'll have to celebrate yours. .... Congrats on your forum assignment. Please use your clout to inform Bill T he is welcome and we miss his wake up calls.
Everybody ... Who is volunteering to remind us about Ulrich's b'day so we may celebrate.
Galaxy .. That was a very funny reply to Ulrich.
Are we still rolling across Canada or are we in BC now?
Congratulations Ulrich,
Dana has made a fine choice. We are proud of you and know that you will bring all of your expert skills to this new assignment. Don't be too hard on us ! Promise ??
Love all the photos being posted by all of you.
What great work and inspiration you give to us. You know who you are and I am glad to call you friends.
I must get my camera up to speed and try posting some myself. I'll put that on my to do list.
It is still very hot here, but not like you guys in the central and southern States. My Son has been in Missouri for a month and it hasn't been out of the 90s in the day time yet. Yesterday with the humidex it was 117 there. WOW. At least there is no lawn left to mow, it is all burnt off.
PAUL, with those major cracks in the ground from the drought, is there a problem with cattle catching their hooves in them ??
BILL T. Where did you disappear to ?? We really miss your wake up call each day. We are hoping that you are OK and maybe just took a few days off. Hurry Back.........>>>>
Hope you all are staying cool and are looking on the up-side. Check in again later..
Keep smiling Guys,

Afternoon!
Flo, I'll have a RBF to tide me over to supper....
Ulrich, glad to have you on board as a moderator!!! I know you will do a fine job in THAT capacity. Both Selector and TStage did a great job as moderators, and I know you will tread in their footsteps. I remember this place before we had the "volunteer" moderators, and I sure wouldn't want to go back to those days.....
Hi Bill!
Been continuing the sort out, file, or throw away/recycle of tons of collected stuff today. We have been getting a slow gentle rain all day. Need about 4 or 5 more days of exactly the same thing. THAT won't happen though. Tomorrow I will pick my first zucchini and yellow squash from the garden. YES!
Later!
yougottawantaJeff - nice job what is that wire running between the units ?
The wires connect the pickups of the two units together. By doing this the power picked up by the wheels of both units can be shared by both.
Sir Madog Good Evening Folks! Just a bit of news. Dana Kawala has asked me to join the Kalmbach crew of user moderators to this forum and I have accepted the challenge, following in the footsteps of Crandell (selector) and Tom (tstage). It´s a challenging and sometimes maybe not always rewarding task, but I will do my best to keep this forum a lively and open-minded one.

Good evening all
Raining on and off here, helped cool things down a bit.getting tired of being out in the 100 degree temps. We paved some streets the other day (asphalt is delivered at 300 degrees ) and the poor guys didnt have any water ! How can a company do that to its people ? So I got them some ice and filled up their cooler with water from the model.
Jeff - nice job what is that wire running between the units ?
Jeremy - hope you feel better
Cuda - how are you holding up without the ? Sorry to hear about your friends pay cut.
Howmus - I thought you were going to say you were throwing away train stuff I was reading with dread .
L&NTim - for your wifes doctor visits.
Galaxy - I am with you on where Jeff lives. I simply do not know how one lives in THAT heat .
Gotta git back to w**k Talk to you all later.
Flo, whatever these chowhounds will be having tonight, put it on my tab.
CUL!
Sir MadogJim - glad to see you´re back!
Well, gee, thanks! Huh? You're talking to that guy behind me? Oh, sorry.

Currently 72°F here in the Finger lakes with a high of only 74°F predicted and RAINING!!!
For those of you trying to cool off a bit, how about trains in the snow.....
Garry...
Jeffrey the diseasal thingy looks very good..... What exactly is it???
Galaxy, I have never heard of a 2-10-10-4.... If there was one, it isn't listed at steamlocomotive.com. I would be interested in seeing the photo you described. Can you give us a link?
Jim, good to see you again!
Good Afternoon Folks!
I am running late today, but I am not up to my usual speed. It´s a hot and humid day, just not my type of weather. Petra and I are pretty much suffering, starting with headaches and a queasy feeling in our stomachs. And it´s only 80 F outside. There is no way we could put up with a weather you guys are having.
I went to our home improvement store and bought a small bottle of transparent latex caulk. Today, I don´t dare to do anything on the module, but it is supposed to cool off again in the next days, so I will give the technique from the video, for which Ken sent the link to me, a try.
Jeff - I´d never achieve a nice and smooth paint job like the on on the B unit with a rattle can!
Jim - glad to see you´re back! I was trusting that you were busy, but a little worried as well.
Garry - your b-day must be coming up soon. When is yours? Mine is on the 19th...
L&NTim- for your wife´s test next Monday!
Ken - a pay cut for Shaun is a pretty tough thing to swallow. From what you told us, he seems to be a nice guy. I hope things work out for him - as well as you!
Back to the sofa - my head is yelling at me!
Good morning. It's 80° and sunny. The high today will be 101° (probably hotter) with no hope for rain. The temp will likely feel like 115°.
My plan for today. Mow my parents yard and get cooked well done in the process. I'm going to mow it with the blade height on a high setting so I don't kill the grass. Been there and done that.
On the layout front, unless you've been stranded out in Death Valley with no internet or phone signal you know that I got the F7B shell done yesterday. Now I'll be keeping my eyes open for an F7A shell of like or similar quality and condition for cheap or free. I lucked out on the F7B shell as the owner didn't need it and let me have it for the asking. If somebody has a detailed or somewhat detailed HO F7A shell that will fit on an Athearn chassis and doesn't need or want it and doesn't want much for it we need to talk.
CB&Q- I can't read the name on the tender of the 2-10-10-4 due to the angle of the shot. I can, however, count the wheels even between the crew's legs. Smooth jacket al along looking kinda streamlined, untill you look at the front end and pilot.
jeffrey-wimberly galaxy: Sorry, JEFFREY, but I could never live where you do in the heat of the summer. I see by the TV news you are in one of the parishes in the high heat zone. Yeah, down here you could probably cook a pizza on the hood of your car without too much of a problem. A young man quite literally across the road from me, David Parks (Trainmaster on this forum) last month literally cooked bacon and eggs on the back steps of his parents house and that wasn't at the hottest part of the day. If you can't take the heat don't come here. Anything over 75 has me hunting for the AC. When I'm driving I put up with it because I have no choice. Here's an example of what the heat here is like. I painted a Proto 2000 F7B shell yesterday. Black with white trim. Spray paint at that. The black dried within two minutes and that was a heavy coat. The white was put on in a thin coat and it dried almost instantly. When I put the Clear Flat spray on it I did it indoors as it would have cracked or fogged if it dried too quickly. You can't unfog Clear Flat by apraying over it like you can with Dull cote. Once it's fogged that's it. You have to strip it back and do it over.

Oh, I will never by a vehicle without A/C again. DId once, and never again.I know you have no choice, and I would roast in the 92 Taurus when we did errands in it while the Caravan was in the shop. The Taurus would only hold a A/C charge for 1/2 the season, so it wasn't worth paying for it twice.
I know we might like the south for milder winters {though that is changing too}, But even MOH conceeds that summer could be brutal. And we just can't afford to be snowbirds.
