Worked on some buildings yesterday. Painted a City Classics 1930,s  Gulf service station. Ordered some decals from Micro-scales I didn,t like the paper ones that came with the kit. Finished the temporary wiring for the turntable Whistling. Can,t decide if I want to put a hobo jungle under my trestle.

Evening All,

At w**k tonight. My shift today started at 1600 today. Earlier today I cleaned track, put signage up, put piping in for the water pans, made and installed yellow and white markers for the ends of the pans, glued down pasture fencing and painted the sides of the 2 layout openings dark brown to help simulate dirt. Sounds like a lot but they all were quick jobs except the cleaning.

Ken- I am sorry about your situation and hope it works out for you and your family. I truly hope you can stay in the diner as you would be greatly missed by all.

Ulrich- Happy Anniversary to you and Petra. I like the taller hillside and like the idea of maybe not a large waterfall but a thin one like from a creek instead of a river.

Sea monster- Believe it or not we applied Rain-Ex on our periscope head windows prior to a underway when I was in the Navy. It shortened the time it took to clear water off them when raised at sea.

Everyone have a good night, and prayers for those in need.

I am really surprissed to see how well a waterfall fits into the scene. Still over the top, Jeff?

Hi Ulrich,

I think it looks quite fitting for that module.  Focusing the eye towards the waterfall takes your mind off the shortness of the module. (Makes it look larger). I don't think it is over the top at all other than that's where the water must come from........

My vote is to go with it.  I like it lots.

Just past midnight, but the pain in my hip won´t let me sleep. Or maybe it´s my thoughts about the module?

A friend of mine "photoshopped" the picture and added a waterfall feature:

I am really surprissed to see how well a waterfall fits into the scene. Still over the top, Jeff?

OMG - how to make up my mind! Question

Heartland Division CB&Q

Jeff .. Nice photos. Is that a recently painted PA-1?

Nope/ I did that one years ago. The PA1 is a pre-DCC Proto 2000 model with an Athearn drive. Very fast and tends to coast a long way even at low speed. It was painted totally with a brush and the MKT decal on the side was printed on air mail paper.

Howdy ..

Congrats to Ulrich and Petra for their anniversary.

Ulrich .. I like your module

Jeff .. Nice photos. Is that a recently painted PA-1?

Todd .. Prayers for your MIL.

Jerry .. I&S will be history? What's up?

Stan .. Your museum building must have quite a history itself.

Here's a Bowser Pennsy T1 I made several years ago. It looked out of place rolling west of Omaha on my railroad, and it was dispatched via Ebay to a Pennsy nut a couple of years ago.

Happy Model Railroading

 Sir Madog:
How about adding a waterfall or would that be too much in such a little module?

A waterfall may be a bit over the top.

Well, I wouldn't put it way down at the bottom....  The top sounds good to me.

Ulrich, I think a small waterfall would be just the thing in there.  Would be very believable and could end with a small stream at the bottom of the module.

Afternoon Folks!

Janie, just a tall glass of unsweetened Ice Tea for me.

We had a nice rain storm, a couple of them actually, today so I won't have to spend $$ watering the vegetables tonight.  Temperature has been up and down from the low 70's to the mid 80s several times today as the fronts came through.  Some areas nearby supposedly had some hail and strong winds with the lines of sorms, but we just got some good rain out of them.

Been doing some odds and ends, both indoors and outdoors today.  I'm about ready to get the mower out and trim the weeds THAT have sprung up in the lawn.  THAT is about all THAT has been growing.

Just thought I would check in a read up on what everyone has been doing...  Looks like most everyoine must be busy as they aren't hanging out in here. Whistling

Ulrich,

A deep fissure with a trickle of water would require the bridge and perforation through the other side of the fissure where you abutt the other module. with a little trickle out of the tunnel portal as well it would suggest the presence of water in the rock and perhaps be more believeable? The water would also wash lots of rock debris and dirt through the cleft and account for the abundance of vegetation.   J.R.

Nothing worth watching in the idiot box, so I´d rather spend the time thinking about that "Green Wall" issue. How about adding a waterfall or would that be too much in such a little module?

Went to Deridder this morning for my appointment but little did I know that my doctor was a no show. They tried calling me to reschedule but I was already on the road. My question is why couldn't they reschedule before instead of waiting until literally the last minute. The doctor that was there showed me the brace that had been put together. It's too long. The top catches me at the top of the of the knee leaving about two or three inches of open space between the foot pad and the bottom of my foot. It was cool out so I had a nice drive there. I have to go back August 10th. It went to raining on me on the way back so I used the wipers only when I really had to. They only acted up once. I just pulled over far enough that I could get the door open, stand in the step well and reach out and grab the wiper arm. Practically impossible to do while sitting. Even though I'm only one and a half inches short of six feet and have long arms that van is very big. One quick pull and the wipers were working again. I stopped by Lowe's and picked up three half-pint cans of mis-tinted paint, two packs of batteries (AA & AAA), a new hot glue gun (old one died). I was careful to make sure it used the same size glue sticks the old one used. Went to get gas. Put $30 worth in the tank. Sounds like a lot until you consider that buys 8.176 gallons. That's less than half a tank on my old battle wagon. It brought it up to near full. To the pharmacy to get my prescriptions refilled. They were able to do all but the one I need the most. They had to fax off to the doc for a renewal on it. Knowing my primary care doctor that will likely be sometime tomorrow. Today will be spent doing little odd jobs on the layout.

Ulrich,

I prefer the bottom view - it looks more like a rock outcrop that needed boring through instead of "daylighting". Perhaps expose more rock on the covered portion of the narrow bore and down in the cut as well ?  J.R.

Grumble, grumble - nothing to do - I need to wait for the ballast to dry, that´ll take until tomorrow. Been thinking of getting the saber saw out to reshape the back of the module - I am not quite happy with that "green wall". I better wait and see...

This is the way the module looks like right now:

There is quite a bit of detail still missing - the catenary poles,  the contraption to keep branches from falling onto the tracks (I need to solder that thing - horror!), the bridge needs weathering ...

Or should I do this:

Help?

Stan - do I love Pennsy steam! Unfortunately, there is nothing available in N scale Sigh

My hip is hurting like mad, immobilizing me. I will go to see a doc about it tomorrow.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Blueberry pancakes with real NYS Maple Syrup and a cup dark roast coffee, please.  What?  Oh, OK, throw in a couple breakfast sausages as well....

Currently 77°F on its way up to 81° later.  Looking outside, even though the lawn is still Yellow/Brown, the weeds have managed to grow, so I will get out the lawn mower sometime today and go through the motions....

Spent much of yesterday evening cleaning out my old Business store room (which at one time was my youngest son's bedroom.  Recycled about $500 worth of old Cassette Tape cover inserts THAT have been sitting on the shelf for the last decade.  I had just made use of a huge sale at the company I got them from and withing 6 months stopped making tapes......  I seem to always make very wise decisions.....Whistling  Anyway, today they really aren't worth much (and i don't want to mess around with evilbay) so I decided just to throw them into the recycling bins.  Found about 1000 photos most of which I inherited back when I was the Boy Scout District Camping Chair way back when....  They will get dropped off at the Service center for the District Executive to deal with.  Also lots and lots of Styrofoam peanuts and plastic shipping things.....

Ken, Sorry to hear about your finances...  Hope you have a couple really great weeks soon to get a bit more $$$ in the bank!

Ulrich, sounds like a great time and congrats on the anniversary!  I am a fan of Chinese Food myself.

Best get to some other tasks.

Later!

Good morning everyone!

It's going to be a nice day with cooler temps, just right to get out on the porch and get painting! I have the Burlington painting formatted along with a shot of a B&O mallet in pusher service shoving a train up Bingham hill here on the Buffalo division. The Burlington painting is first. When it's too oppressive to be outside, I work on sketches in the house. I'm more comfortable painting on the porch where I have more room to work. Sometimes, I can get a few images sketched while waiting.

Garry- The Salamanca Rail Museum is located in the southwest corner of NYS on US Rt. 86. Here's a little history- Salamanca is located on a reservation one of three that make up the Seneca Nation of Indians. The New York and Erie RR built through here in 1851 on their way from Piermont NY on the Hudson to Dunkirk NY on Lake Erie. In the early 1860's A new line from here to Chicago was planned, and one of the largest investors of the new line [The Atlantic And Great Western RR] was the Marquis of Salamanca Spain. For his contribution, our city was named after him. The two RR's eventually merged to become the Erie RR. In 1874 the Rochester and State Line RR built south from Rochester NY to here attempting to provide a more direct route to haul coal to that city from the Pennsylvania coal fields. This line eventually became the BR&P Ry and later, the B&O RR. Both the BR&P and the Erie had fairly large yards here each with roundhouses and later diesel facilities. The PRR also had a branch on the south side of salamanca connecting the Buffalo division at Olean NY to the P&E division at Warren Pa. It was just a single track branch with little traffic that met its demise with the building of the Kinzua Dam on the Allegheny River north of Warren. We also had a trolley system here through the early part of the 20th century, but it was gone by 1927. here's a pic of the museum:

Curt- Yeah, Pennsy locos are my favorite models to photograph. Here's a shot of our T1:

Ulrich- thanks for the comment on the paintings. I don't know whether I could produce enough paintings to offer them in MR/Trains. If it were possible for me to run prints of each, I would definitely try to sell them there. BTW, your module is taking shape nicely! keep it up.

Tom in Ca- Nice shot of your layout. I found quite a few nice pics of the M-4 on the web. I think I have an idea for a painting.

Well fellas, I better get set up, time is money!

Everyone have a great day!

-Stan

They have Chinese restaurants in Germany too? (chuckle) Do they speak Chinese there, or German. Here, the kitchen staff at the Chinese buffets speaks Spanish. Oh never mind, I see now they speak Vietnamese. You’d think they’d run a Vietnamese restaurant…Tongue Tied.

Laugh  Todd - they call it Asia restaurant - for Germans, everything fom that region of the world is "Chinese". One of the signs to tell you we live in a small town.

Yougottawanta and Jeff:  One of the car washes around here sprays Rainx (Rainex?) on the whole car when you get their most comprehensive and expensive ($21) wash.  It does make the water roll off the window and water beads up and rolls off the body.  It does repel water.  I believe one can get it at the local automotive supply stores.  I've never tried spraying it on the windshield but after seeing how water runs off the body I think it would work.  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe something similar is sprayed on aircraft windshields.

$21 sounds like a lot for a car wash, but for that you get the mats washed, the interior and trunk vacuumed, the car washed in a tunnel and wax applied, underneath washed and rust inhibitor applied,  the exterior and interior and the glass are hand wiped and dried, tire dressing is applied and they blow the water out of the window wells, exterior mirrors and any other place where water can accumulate.  I don't get the top end wash every time, but the car looks and smells brand new afterwards.  Oh yes, they give you an air freshener too.

Somehow, I think car wax applied to the windshield would make it streaky.  Just my thought.

Isn't it funny how a freshly cleaned car seems to run better than it did before?

Good Morning All,

Back from Pittsburgh where we ran three cars one of which broke in the first session (head gasket) so an easy weekend which was good because of the heat and humidity. Cleaned up the train room and bench last night so I can start assembling turnouts with switch and wiring loom. I decided finally on the PECO switches that fit under the Peco turnouts and have an attachment for signals as well. I will preassemble and dig the hole required for the mechanism and hide it all by placing black paper between the turnout bottom and the mechanisms which should also keep out most of the debris. Yes I know it'll be a pain to repair anything with it all hidden, but this seems the best bet.

Jeff - I love the stuff you're showing. I have one of those Atlas towers as well, but yours looks just perfect !

   Rain-X Love the stuff. It's available in a little bottle (apply to towel buff in, wipe off) or as windshield washer fluid (not useful in your case) or as pre-moistened towelletes in a plastic container (dry when you finally get to them). The stuff really w..ks if you follow the instructions from as little as 20mph up to warp 9. We use it on the race cars and street cars both and love it. {unsolicited testamonial}

Looks like some of the usual run of troubles here in the coffee shop but I'll try to catch up posts and see what's up. CUL, J.R.

Good Morning!! Coffee and…..I think I’ll have what Bill had last night. Man that looks good still this morning. Medium rare please. Thank you.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY PETRA and ULRICH!!!!! Cake They have Chinese restaurants in Germany too? (chuckle) Do they speak Chinese there, or German. Here, the kitchen staff at the Chinese buffets speaks Spanish. Oh never mind, I see now they speak Vietnamese. You’d think they’d run a Vietnamese restaurant…Tongue Tied.

Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 100. Might be getting a bit warmer again.

AS usual got called out in several directions yesterday so no train time. I did get a few minutes last night to stop in to see Ray’s post about the Paypal hacker and went to the card Paypal is attached too and to the Paypal account. No activity. Glad Ray’s card company caught it.

Ken- Sorry about the woe’s man. I know what you mean, things is tough here too. Granted, not quite as tough as you are experiencing, I’m not looking at losing our house yet. But taking care of Mom’s house and all the taxes for it and utilities and any expenses related…, well this ole meager income ain’t set for dual home ownership. Luckily I have a few supplies built up for the layout, if I can ever get too them, gas prices have come down some, but with the State Fair in a few weeks, starting to climb back up there so no joy rides. We do try to see that there is enough money for a dinner out a week. Just to give a break. Usually it’s at a buffet so dinner for two, drink, tax title and tip comes in under thirty bucks. So far we can do that. If we want to go someplace a bit more relaxing, Lonestar Steak House has this 2 meals for $25 deal, by the time you get a drink, (Brenda seems to be allergic to water in a public restaurant) and tip it’s a bit more but not a whole lot. We do waaaay more couponing than ever before too. OH well, things will get better. Or so I’m told.

Speaking of allergic to water, get this. When you can buy a soda for like 30 some cents a can to drink at home, she'll drink water often times at mealtime. BUT in a restaurant, where the things run anywhere from $1.70 to $2.50 a PIECE and from a person who does not drink alot ANway so she leaves half of it, she can't seem to get water passed her lips.Grumpy

YGW- I will keep the product in mind and have told Brenda about it. The Doctors will be asked about it. Thank you for the suggestion.

MIL goes in for her surgery today. Good news is the swelling in the colon has gone down more than the Doctors thought it would and are pleasantly surprised. This means the surgery will not have to be as “invasive”. Meaning, apparently, they will not have to make as large an incision and are not expecting her to have near the risk because of it. Still riskier than most, but her heart doctor will still be there as they will still need to magnatize the defibulator. But her odds have incresed in her favor. So Than is good news. Still anything can happen even with a simple surgery. We’ll see how all goes today. Of course I have to w**k this morn when she goes under and tonight when she comes out, but I’ll be there for a while whilst she’s being worked on.

Welp, must get a few odds and ends around here started (notice I didn’t say done?) before my day really gets started.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

It´s past lunchtime!

Petra and I are just back from our anniversary lunch at our Chinese restaurant. It felt good to have a meal outside for a change. Petra had beef and veggies in a coconut milk & curry sauce and I had beef "Sichuan style", which hot and spicy. Both were simply delicious. Actually, the place is run by a very friendly Vietnamese couple and a booming place. You need to reserve for lunch!

I am going to have a nap now - the pain in my hip did not let me sleep well last night. Moving around is still awkward - my hip is screaming at me (just to quote Jeff).

YGW - family issues are always difficult to deal with, and usually not very rewarding. My parents urgently need help, but are to stubborn to accept it. The worst issue is, that they don´t have any friends around them - they survived all of them. A pretty nasty thought. Petra´s aunt and uncle also need to move into an assisted living place. her aunt is tied to a wheelchair. She is suffering from MS and can hardly move even with a wheel chair. They still live in their house. Each night, Petra´s uncle has to carry his wife upstairs! Her son lives 300 miles away from them and has been urging them to move closer to his place for some years now, but without success. I do hope I won´t be that stubborn when I get to this age (my son says I am already)

Barry - it´s a Japanese company called World Kougei or World Craft. They make highly detailed N scale brass kits of Japanese prototype. Kits sell for about $ 150 to $ 300 (steamers), so not really a bargain. Assembled kits run up to $ 1,000, just about the same price range as Tenshodo brass models. This is expensive, but when you figure that some plastic locos of European prototype are coming close to this price level, the price does not seem to be unreasonable.

Here is a link: World-Kougei

Just a quick update on the module:

As of right now, it already looks much better than in the above pic.

Well, I´ll be going for my nap - CUL!

The oddest thing happened yesterday at w**k . A little cell popped up over the site and started raining , now get this it was so dry here while trying to compact the roads all we did was stir up dust clouds and could not get compaction to the ratios required. Then around eleven it starts rain , which is a good thing because believe it or not a little water helps compaction. Butr here is the odd part. This cell just stayed directly over us and would not move. I watched on intelllicast as over storm systems came at us and others to the north went by. But this durn thing just stayed over us until around 4pm and then it cleared off.Hmm.

Jeff, Ulrich - sorry about family - I am so sorry you all have to deal with THAT. While my wife was in the midst of her struggles to survive the tumor operations, I was struggling to be a part of her care, take care of the family, work, cok, clean etc... My MIL turned on me and started activetly trying to sabotage my marriage and other family relationships. My wife did not believe me until she caught her Mother in a bold face lie that made it pretty much impossible to ignore her lies. Very painful. Talk about getting kicked while one is down. My Angel go out for you two.

Tom - In this area they have a commercial run by an investment company that cracks on Casinos/powerball/lotteries. They have the sound of someone picking one of those balls out of the airblower things and when he reads the writing on the ball he reads "you loose", "you loose" and "you loose" . I hope you have better luck than that.

Jeff - Wipers- If I may make a suggestion. Around here they have a product that is basically watery wax. You can squirt this stuff on a windshield and buff it once it has dried and let me tell you it can rain to beat the band and one can actually see the road ! It is called "rainx" or maybe its "rainex" any who if you have some regular car wax I would think that the results would be the same.

Good Morning All,

Ray I had the same thing happen, well over 700 of us got our cards hijacked.  All they said on the news was we all shopped at the same place.  The only place I had used my credit card was the local drug store chain.

Ken sorry to hear about your problems, I’m sure most of us have been there and fought and clawed our way out of it.  I was there for a long time until I retired and picked up another job.  Please feel free to rant and don’t worry about us…

Johnboy, why don’t you email me your address and I’ll send you something in snail mail, because the email thing isn’t working.

Tonight I have to figure out how to print decals that have white letters and a 3 color raccoon face.

Just did a little surfing the web, waiting for the glue to set.

Found my dream loco:

It´s a N scale kit, sells for way too many $$$, needs way too many skills to assemble, but, heck, why not dream about it?
