Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a breakfast bagel w/ cheese and a cup of dark roast to start the day....  What?  yes I know it almost lunch time...  I've already done half a days w*rk.....

Really sorry to hear of the Liberty Belle being destroyed!  Can't help to wonder what went wrong to bring her down.  She should be able to fly on 3 engines I think.  Truly a loss of a historical old war bird!

Oh and a happy flag day to all!  Today would have been my Mother's 94th. Birthday as well.

Todd, there are some decent looking "decorative" CFLs here: http://www.1000bulbs.com/category/decorative-cfl-compact-fluorescents/  I have done business with the company on many occasions, and can tell you they are good to work with.  They have decent prices on all their stock.  The full spectrum 5000°K ones on my layout came from them.  You are right that for the can light applications you have to buy CFLs made for the job.  Using the el-cheapos from Mall Wart won't last long under conditions where heat builds up.  As I said in an earlier post, people need to do the research before just sticking any old bulb in the socket!  I also have several Full Spectrum CFLs from this company: http://www.bluemaxlighting.com/  Awesome color rendering!  I have some of their 3 ways, and 123w bulbs for photography.  The 123 watters have the light of a 500w incandescent and are a daylight bulb as well.

Have a bunch of little items to get done today....  So what's new, right?  best get going.

73

[edit] OK, Zoe here's the credit card...  Tell them to go easy on me.  i still have over a hlaf a month to get through.....

Thanks fellas for the nice comments! Ulrich, I believe you're referring to Leanin Tree. That's where I drew a lot of inspiration from way back when, There's no doubt that the late Howard Fogg was my greatest inspiration. He was the best of them all. I used to cut the images of his paintings from Trains magazines when they used an image of his. My Uncle lives next door to a retired Pennsy section foreman, and he gave me a copy of the P&LE book that Howard Fogg illustrated in the 60's when I was young. I still have it and will use it for reference when needed. There a lot of other great artists out there, Ted Rose was incredible as well, as was Gil Reid, Grif Teller, and many more. I can only wish to be half as successful as those guys.  Simon, I have only a couple of paintings available in print mainly because of the astronomical cost of running prints. I've found it to be easier to sell the paintings outright. The last print I ran was of an Erie freight train crossing the famous Kinzua Viaduct in the 1940's. It cost me $1500.00 for 200 prints and that was the minimum I could order. It wasn't cost effective for me to get that many. I still haven't covered the cost of the printing in sales. Anyway, I'm really comfortable w**king this way for now. The sketch for the Pennsy painting is half finished, and I hope to be painting in the backround this afternoon. Maybe some pics tomorrow.-Stan

Just got home from a minor surgery. It went pretty well as far as we can to, but I won't be doing any modeling today. Talk to you all later.

Stan - BowBowBow

I forgot the name of the company which makes these Christmas cards with trains, but your picture equals or exceeds those!

Simon - why should I feel offended by a picture of a B 17? In my youth days, I built a number of models of "enemy aircraft" and I still have a model of a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk stashed away somewhere in my attic. If I had another hobby than "just MRRing", it´d be building model airplanes, with a preference of WW II war birds. No harm done!

Todd, have you thought about offering a free 1 year whole house warranty? Out of pocket cost for you is under $350 (added to the closing costs), but when people bring up the what-ifs you can throw the warranty clause at them.  I would type more, but at some point my keyboard will need to be replaced…

Wow, just got handed the bill from yesterday!!!!  It wasn't a few My 2 Cents either.   After all the complaining  it looks like a bunch of you went for the Full English....   Worse still someone ate my stash of MarmiteSuper Angry

Ulrich, I hope that you did not consider that insensitive of me posting the images of the B17?  To me it is an important part of history that I feel my boys should be well aware of.   A few years ago we became friendly with an old WW2 veteran.  He was fascinating to talk with, because he gave our family a very different insight into the mind of the soldier.   He had lived in the USA for decades, became very senior in IBM, a most American company.  He fought in Italy during the Patton march North and was part of a machine gun crew, German regular army unit, near Trieste when he was captured and became a POW.  He was so impressed with his treatment as a POW that he decided he wanted to live in the US after the war.   He was just a young man serving his nation, for which I have a great deal of respect.  What was particularly interesting was that with the partition of Germany, most of his relatives ended up in the East, so his family was quite split up by the division of the country.   Sadly he passed away, as are so many of the brave that were part of the war.

LightningLightningStormLightning  all morning since about 3am...   It will be nice when the boomers stop!!

Have a good day everyone

Good morning!  A very successful day yesterday. Here is the completed painting.

I have a great photo of Pennsy K4 3667 with the Buffalo Day Express taken in May of 1950 that I'll be using for my next painting. The sketch should be completed this afternoon. we'll see how it goes.

I was able to get some Railroading in with my sons last night. here's a little Pennsy action.

Just A Ham and cheese on wheat and a cup of joe for me thanks!

Good Morning!! Coffee please. Thanks. I will NOT ask about an item on Ulrich’s list of English Breakfast items. I just…, don’t want to know.

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 77. According to the radar, they are right. In reality, it is not raining as much as it appears on radar. No complaints from me. Possibly ending around 11ish. I hope so, then I can see about getting back to my digging. Oughta be pretty easy. Now that I have the foundation exposed, it’ll probably be a mess all over the place.

Galaxy- Yes, I should have just stuck with the subject. But my curiosity gets me every timeLaugh. Sorry about the house. I was having high hopes for that one.

Ulrich- Buyers market alright. Buyers we’ve had want a Rolls for the price of a Chevy. (not that Mom’s house is a Rolls Royce, but you get the idea). _ I see why you’d like to be in that house! It’s beautiful.

Speaking of buyers market, this last couple made an offer. $50,000 less than asking. Their reasoning? Well, geeeet this,

Laterals don’t last forever so even though they are fine now, they probably will have to be at some time in the future.Indifferent

The roof will have to be replaced because it is about 15 years old. Yes it is fine now and probably has another 10 to 15 years left in it, but then we are looking at having to get a new roof sooner than if it were new. Indifferent

The well pump will surely have to be replaced at some point if it goes out. Indifferent

The furnace works fine, but they would want to replace it. OK, we understand that and it has always been a given that who ever bought the house would want to have a new HVAC setup as it is vintage 1972. Got an estimate, and have that stashed for negotiations.

AND the water heater may quit and will have to be replaced.Confused I was waiting for them to ask for the cost of a riding mower and the estimated gas they would use because they would have to mow the yardSigh.

Oddly enough , they did not mention the three bedrooms upstairs with the Pink, the gold, and the red white and blue carpets. Usually THAT’s what people say. Not "we'll need the cost of the toilet valves because they will more than likely need replaced in about 10 years.

I don’t know where I stand on the CFL Incandescent issue as for the stop making them part other than feeling bad for throwing ol Tommy's work away.  I myself, like them (CFL's that is. Pretty fond of lightbulbs too) and would use them even if they were to still make the incandescent. But like Garry, we have a light above the dining table that uses those little flame looking things and the bathroom mirrors have those ball looking jobs. I haven’t found a good looking CFL so far for those that don't look like some spaceship. As for the can lights, we have had no issues with the flood types. I’m slowly replacing the incans with the CFL’s as they go out.

Too bad about the Liberty Belle. A piece of history that can not be replaced.

Well, (filling up again) I’ve babbled long enough. Best get a movin. Plenty of stuff to do despite the weather.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning All,

Intermittent downpours this morning and 57F for temp. Thrashing away in the shop to leave for Mosport Ont tomorrow morning with 3 cars one of which is getting an engine change. Load and unload spares and finish customs papers etc.

Did finally get the leftover mound of dirt in the front yard distributed around where it was needed and fixed (again) the lawnmower so the pull cord functions. On the Mrr front I finally moved the turntable and roundhouse across the return track to outside the yard and freed up some useful room. Downside is it may cut into the industrial area more than I'd like. Also spent time bashing a Bralick Building kit previously bashed from the old layout to fit around the one post that goes through the layout. The incline to level two runs behind the post so the building will still have track through it but I'll fit a proper portal to it and add building around it. Just like air rights.

Need to get back in the shop and get things done. My best wishes for those on sick call.   CUL, J.R,

mornin'

I definitely GREATLY EMPATHIZE AND EVEN SYMPATHIZE with KEN on the tooth issues!!! I had a loose filling restored last friday and it was a dull ache after the novacain wore off. Then it has just gotten progressively worse till last night I could hardly sleep!!  I have vicodin already form my back issues {it does little good there but does great for tooth issues} but even THAT did not help.

MOH officiated the wedding of a friend of ours son last evening. Went well, but afterward the son said he was so nervous that he has no idea what he said or did durning the ceremony. I said " now you do understrand that whether you remember what you said or nto, it now means you are now MARRIED" and everybody roared. He and the new wife had a baby 2 years ago they decided to make "legal". The baby was causing a ruckus throwing his food all over {was his bedtime he acts out when he wants to go to bed}and I looked at the bride and said "now you DID say you didn't want him to be an only child, didn't you?" and everybody but the bride roared with laughter, but she shot me a glance that "if looks could kill"...

WEll waiting for dentists office to open and pharmacy too need the refil on the vicodin.....

Not much else planned today but to suffer..should do some laundry...

2 new houses on the market, but one is surrounded by commercial developement and the other is out of our price range. Even just out of our range, there is bound to be something wrong with it....

We will keep looking...

Have a Better day today than I am having !!

Good Morning,

Not much to report from the north coast of Ohio.  Cloudy and chilly, the high today will be 67F.  Worked on the port module for about an hour last night ballasting 6-7 tracks in the yard and the open area between the ore dock and coal dock.  Tonight will be spent cleaning up the ballast I spilled on the floor.

Jeff, you have mail.

Ulrich, will there be any bamboo on the layout?

I saw the pictures of the Liberty Belle in the field, but missed the story.

Good Morning

Sunshine and a high of 68F expected today...wonderful day for yardwork...I got to do some hay,  I mean, lawn cutting to do ...maybe later on this morning...too early now...Confused

Chris:  Does anyone know how many surviving B-17's are still around? I think the WWII airplane museum up near Hamilton ON still has one..or was it someone else ...Whistling

My favorite POS was a 1982 Renault LeCar...a complete rust bucket...one day..while a friend of mine and myself were driving to university we ended up behind this huge Bentley driven by this one fur coated young thing who looked rather attractive...and she was...the problem was that we ended up parking in the same lot as her....and we sort of stayed in the car..underneath the dashboard...this thing was so rusted out it sported about 6 different colours...I was surprised that we managed to keep the blamed thing on the road...Laugh

Welp...Flo, I'll just have a coffee for now please...I'll be at the RC for a bit....

Goooooooooooooooooood Eve, uh, Morning everybody...well, probably just Herr ULRICH this time of day! Greetings Sir!

Uh, KEN...you might wanna edit this one just a bit for clarity: "When I was dating a Air Forces General he arranged a flight for me in the Bell while I was in AZ." Smile, Wink & Grin

Sad indeed to see such a fine machine as the Liberty Belle destroyed Crying I can just imagine how the firefighters felt, not being able to get to her (field too muddy). One of the few remaining flying B-17s was in Des Moines last year around the time of the State High School Baseball Tournament. It flew over the stadium (Principal Park) and the stadium camera crew zoomed in on her and showed the mighty beast on the jumbotron screen. Pretty sweet deal. I believe the ump called "time out" while it flew over. Thumbs Up

VINCENT: The Chevy Citation...a wonderful POS! No, I never drove one, but my best friend in high school had one. To call it a rust-bucket would be an insult to rusty buckets! It was a God-awful brown color...reminding one of something THAT fell out of the back end of a dog. In 1987, our senior year, I swear he was on a mission to kill the car. There's some British TV guy who had a show where he would set out to kill a car...good 'ole Nick Klein was years ahead of him! One fateful night, rather than try to kill the car, we set out to properly dispose of a Rockwell circular saw which had given up the ghost. After pummeling the sad saw with a variety of implements of destruction back at the scene shop (high school stage, we were "techies" building the set for the spring musical), we had the not-so-bright idea to drive down the street and fling it out the window. We'd then stop, retrieve the remains, and have another go at it. All was well until at 55 mph, the saw finally dismantled itself upon meeting the concrete. The blade disappeared. We found the rest of the unit. To this day, I still suspect the 7" blade is in orbit somewhere up above, just waiting to zing itself back down to Earth in close proximity to either me or Nick! In the early 90s, Ralph Voss, a great older gentleman in the Cedar Rapids Model Railroad Society, drove a Citation...white over tan, I believe. It too was a rusted-out POS. But, it made a few railfanning journeys to Mason City, Clear Lake and the Quad Cities.

Speaking earlier of baseball, I endured a varsity double-header between my Clear Creek Amana Clippers and the Stormin' Pointers of Center Point-Urbana. I covered CPU back in the 90s when I w**ked for the newspaper in Central City. They still have the same coach, now in his 34th year of coaching the Pointers. Good guy. They took the opener 12-2 in five innings. My Clippers battled back in a nine-inning nightcap (regulation game is seven), tieing it up at seven-all. The winning run came in the bottom of the ninth when with bases loaded with Clippers, the Stormin' Pointer's pitcher walked-in the winning run.

Kinda anti-climactic if you ask me!

On THAT happy note...it's bed time!

Chris

Ken - I have been thinking of building some kind of bridge spanning the gap to the other side of the room. This would basically be a plank with some support I could fasten modules to with screws and wing nuts. I would than have another 8 ft. I could use for a terminus, a yard or something. In any case, I´d like to keep the concept of mini-modules - who knows, I may be moving to a different country/continent one day! Whatever happens - this layout has to go with me - It´s the last I am building.

Right now I am searching for a proper building to sit on the top of the mountain on one of the corner modules. It´ll be the "Tera gurīnsōsu ni" or グリーンソースに, which means "Temple of the Green Well".

Boy Jeffery, that is a understatement! Think I darn near shut down the Dinner!

All I was trying to do was a copy and paste from the US post offices site that said Ulrich Package arrived in Germany on 06-12-11 at 5:17 PM.Big Smile Then everything thing went to heck in a hand basket! When the post finally loaded it was a full page and *&%#^&*(^%$## stuff and not cursing!

Ulrich you just might get it with in 6 days, depending on your customs department. I am really looking forward to you getting it!

Simon Just rub it in, you have only had one decoder to go bad, and don't need to test your motors. Wish we had a smiley faces giving a raspberry! Far as the electrical contract cleaner, I was wondering about that today at work. Well, it is sort of good news, this motor had never had a problem with decoders. So, guess I will install a fresh one and see how it goes. And hopefully not PUFF!

Real sorry to hear about the Bell. When I was dating a Air Forces General Daughter he arranged a flight for me in the Bell while I was in AZ.

Lee I think, OK I know Simon hit the problem on the head and I cooked the decoder and it is not the frame. What really sucked is the engine was running fine, but a few years ago I did the Athearn Tune Up to try to make it run better and went down hill from there. I just got to remember my Motto when I was working on real cars.
