Afternoon All,

I am at w**k today. I found out last night that Mac a friend from the club has a Aortic Aneuyrism 4 cm in size. He was airlifted from Orlando to Shands in Gainesville (University of Florida) for possible surgery. A couple months ago he had a AMI and a pacemaker was put in. I am really afraid that the next time that I see him will be at a viewing. I am not giving up hope but it doesn't look good. He is the type of guy that would give you the shirt of his back if you needed it. Please send your prayers to Mac.

Ray- Nice looking family. Is that you in the last one?

Ken- As someone that got married with a impacted wisdom tooth I really feel your pain. You should get it removed ASAP.

Lee- The POP idea will really make the scene more realistic. I have seen dockside crane tracks both ways while in the Navy.

Ulrich-Please take care of yourself. You are a important part of the Diner.

Jeff- They look great. Unfortunately I don't know what are supposed to be on them and what isn't, but I do know you are a great modeler. I ran a GP-something (belonged to club) at the club last week testing track. I told everyone afterwords I felt slimy from running it. Everybody had a good laugh.

Garry: Ulrich: I am kind of puzzled as to why there has been no tak of a pace-maker or defib in that case...I'm kind of thinking that something like that shoud be used? Unless there is something about it being an Atrial Tachycardia thing? I actually do believe this thing did save my neck that day Garry...

Well, not so deep a subject...I've managed to get my hands on a couple of NWSL can motors for a re-motoring job involving a coupe of Athearn RTR GP18's...maybe these will help the poor things a little...

Lee- Shortly after the CFL's came out strong, our power company sent us a deal we just couldn't refuse. According to them. We could get 10 CFL's for $25. Yup, that's right, just two fity a bulb. Now, after you get over the shock of such a deal, let me add that the shipping would be $10 and they just had to do that because of the deal they were giving on the bulbs. PLUS, and here's the icing, for another $10, they would send a box to put the burned out ones in for recycling. Just add postage when it's done and mail them away. Man I tell you what, I was in awe of the way they were taking care of me. Unfortunately, I found Walmart would take care of me better. About a buck a bulb. Of course I have to pay tax, but I'll blow the extra 8% to help out the states purchase of......whatever they buy. Oh, they did send a couple "complimentary" bulbs. A 60w and 100w (equivalent). I think the 60w lasted about a month and the 100 maybe a couple weeks. NOT good examples. Needless to say........

   

The problem with CFLs is they are supposed to be recycled. TRY and FIND someone who will recycle them!!! It's like regualr batteries...Lowes will recycle RECHARGEABLE batteries{I think wallyworld will too}....but you're on your own trying to find someone who will recycle regular batteries!

 Well going to try to get the Rio Grand SD 50 back on the rails. Trains are running real sweet today and I must say I have enjoyed being off today.

Janie, I'll have one of those RBF things for the moment.

Rain has stopped for the moment at least.  Got about 1/2" of liquid sunshine last night and this morning, but the weather.com site says the watering need is high right now.....????  Wonder what part of 1/2 inch of rain overnight they don't understand?

Curt, your friend is in my prayers.  If he lasts long enough to get to surgery, he will very probably pull through.......  Yes the old guy with the beard is me in the last photo.  Thanks!

Galaxy, interesting...  Here in Ontario County (and most of the counties nearby) we have an annual Hazardous Household Waste Day at the County landfill and some other locations where they take all kinds of items.  I have been recycling all kinds of florescent lights (the tubes contain much more mercury than the new CFLs which have almost no mercury in them), all kinds of batteries, and old electronics for years.  There is a new electronic recycler here in Geneva which is now taking at no cost a lot of things they wouldn't take at the landfill.  They claim that all parts of most items they take will be completely recyled and nothing will end up in the landfill.  BTW you will absorb close to 60 times more mercury by eating a Tunafish sandwich than if you inhaled all of the mercury in a CFL.......  I have no incandescents in my house anymore.  (Well.... there is one in the stove and the refrigerator, but they came with them....)

Uh, oh .... people are talking about the stupid CFL light bulbs. I guess I would not mind too much if people could decide for themsleves what is best. Government need not be involved. Of course, US light bulb plants were closed so CHina could make CFL's to ship here. .... Er.... uh .... OK, Vinnie; I'll get off thesoap box.

Ken.... I meant to talk to you earlier. Sorry about the painful tooth situation. ... It seems that things like tooth emergencies always happen on the weekends just to make you wait until you can see teh dentist.

Jeff here are the GTW rebuilt GP9's.  At first, they were painted with GTW’s blue and red colors. Later, they were repainted to CN’s black and red colors. Also, you can see a scrapped high hood in the weeds.

It has been a busy, but basicaly an unproductive day. We drove up to New Castle, PA this morning where we had breakfast, then went railfanning. A total bust. Nothing but lots of detours due to a couple of bridges and interstate ramps being closed for reconstruction. Wrapped that up and stopped at a nursery to get some flowers to replace those which did not survive my spring plantings. Never did say I was a farmer. Then went to my favorite spot in Leetsdale, PA for a little Norfolk Southern action. And that's what I got, "LITTLE ACTION." Only 3 trains in 2 hours. Couldn't believe it.

But for dinner tonight, we had a Delmonico roast, baked potato, and a bottle of Reisling from Seneca Lake, so at least the day hasn't  been a total dud. However, the wife did say at dinner that after we go to our favorite diner for breakfast tomorrow, and then our weekly grocery shopping, she has a very long list of other places to go. Naturally, this involves shopping. It's going to be a long and expensive day I think.

Oh well, I've enjoyed the day anyway, and hope you have enjoyed yours as well.

Ken-Ouch, I had to get two healthy teeth yanked for my braces and to be honest, I don't know which is worse, not being able to feel my teeth or when the novacaine wears off and the pain's still there. 

And a big to all the new guys. Looks like we may need to expand soon. 

I got a CB radio today. Its all installed except (Sounds like the Chinese directions and a politician doesn't it?) the positive wire. I have to pick up a cigarette lighter adapter for it and tune the antenna. The install was easy enough.

Making more headway with trains and stuff.

Ex-SCL GP9 Ph3. Destined to become a BN GP5 with a chop nose. GP5s were GPs built using FT parts. Looks just like any phase 3 GP9. I have 3 NKP GP18s that will see a simiar fate once I locate the right fans and grills.

And the citations on racks. (Ken, one os them should look familiar)

Garry, There is a light fixture in my house that requires CFLs. The CFL bulb has lasted less than the normal incandecant.

Gooooooooooood Evening...

Well...got this day almost gone through...nothing really happened the whole weekend..which is a good thing around here...

We got to 57F here..and it stayed there all afternoon..tonight it is supposed to go to 45F....mmmmmm

I've got a few things done on the layout but mostly  spent the afternoon just running trains..with nary a breakdown, derail, major accident...or any other such thing...

Wow! I’ve been upset at my wife before but never called her an impacted wisdom tooth. What ? OH! With and impacted wisdom tooth. Heh, heh, I thought he said to an impact.... Never mind.

Galaxy- Our Church has a box for recycling CFL’s and ink cartridges. What I thought was a jab was $10 for a box to put them in and you had to pay postage too. Must have been some box.

‘Tis true about the “danger” of CFL’s, but I suppose enough of anything over the years could be bad. I heard saliva causes cancer now.  But only if swallowed in small amounts over looong periods of time. So far only in California. 'Tis true, a friends daughter's baby came with the tag.  I’m all for recycling and do what I can, admittedly, if it’s convenient enough. I will not save up stuff and pack it across the county however. Remember playing with Mercury in Science class? You notice violence in schools has increased since they stopped allowing that? Just an observation.

Vincent- Fantastic job on the cars. But, in my day, if I had seen half that many Citations in one spot, I’d be running as fast as I could the other way.

Curt-CFL’s are Compact Florescent Light bulbs. Those to replace the regular light bulbs WHICH have been outlawed. But don’t’ mention it around Garry. Kind of a sore spot for him. Mac is in my pryers tonight.

Well, in addition to many numerous tiny things I did manage to get the yard mowed. Materials for the pipe laying project? Nope. Got out to the driveway and she got in the passenger side of her car. Stateing the obvious that 10 foot pies won't fit in the car she said I can do that tomorrow morning she wants to eat and then go to the grocery store. Pipes....food. Pipes....food. I didn't argue.

Gooseberries are ready. I'll bring in a bucket tomorrow. For now I must go apply some color to the POP then shut eye time.

Here's the DER5997 total failure report. We went to Truro Saturday for a joint grandson/granddaughter birthday lunch. All that went fine; dropped off Kris and her mother at the restaurant while I went to get the family (a two-shift effort since the van is five seater, and there were 2 grandsons with friends, plus granddaughter and mom.) So, came down the hill to the grade crossing, and there's the local switch just pulled out  of the siding onto the main; stopped while the switch is thrown back. We are first in line at the gates, perfect! Where's the camera?...on my desk at home! So no pics of that; including all the data and warning signs on the empty centerbeam flat right in front of us...nor pics of the train mural showing the added coaches, as I suspected. That mural is just to the right of the grade crossing. For further punishment, as I drove from the restaurant for the second pick up, the VIA was just pulling across the grade crossing.....

Friend of ours has put her back out (short explanation -  longer one involves childhood polio) Anyway, started on Aleve - didn't read the package and used them as if they were strong Tylenol had pretty much scarfed the whole pack before a) the pain came under control(ish) and b) she realized that it's a "One every 12 Hour" medication!

 Hum, smoke detector just went OFF! Wife must be cooking something.!  Yep, she was.

.. - our downstairs one does that  almost any time we bake or roast, and open the oven door. I think it's an ionization thing - and hair trigger.  The alarm is hard wired in the house circuitry, so we can't slip the battery out while baking etc. What we have to do is vigorously fan air across the thing to silence it, then cover it with one of those "shower cap" food saver gizmos with an elastic edge, sending it to sleep for the duration. The trick is to NOT FORGET to take that cover off once the crisis is past Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

...for us, as for you, Recycle isn't available, but we are supposed to send them to the Hazardous Waste Centre.  Finding THAT is the trick around here - but the local dump takes them and deals with them - and I don't ask how!

Interesting set up, as you say a twin for my N rig. (The black thing on the right in mine is a coupler jig - I find it a bit of a fiddle, and usually ignore it)

What is this CFL light everyone is talking about?

Compact Fluorescent Light - those twisty coil bulb things that save a bundle on electricity bills over the regular incandescent bulbs.  That's our experience anyway, over the two homes of which we have direct knowledge of the power bill. Both houses are now 100% CFL. Oh, it's just occurred to me the CFL is also the Canadian Football League

Flo, just a decaf for me.

Fairly cool day here in the Finger Lakes.  Never got above 70°F, which was nice as i put on the old suit coat for church this morning.  I was a participant in the ceremony accepting the confermands into the church.  Of course I helped myself to some punch and cake at the reception afterwards....

Spent the rest of the day doing chores like the dishes, washing, etc.  I did find some time to do a few things in the train room while the clothes were washing of course so the afternoon and evening weren't a complete loss.

Curt, any word on your friend?  I had a dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth out.  The surgeon did the upper and lower on one side then after a couple weeks did the other side.  Had no problem with the first two.  The second set I had out two days before I had to direct the Spring Concert that year....  I managed somehow to be there and direct the choruses, but I have never been in such pain in my life (well the kidney stones were probably worse....)  CFL = Compact Florescent Light.  People seem to either love them or hate them.  I have one still at work here at my house purchased by my wife.  She died almost 25 years ago.....  Back then they cost close to $20 each. Don't think THAT bulb owes me anything.  Most come with a year or more guarantee.  My layout is lit by CFLs that have a CRI (color Rendering Index) of 93.... (anything over 85 is considered excellent).  They are also "daylight" bulbs that are 5500°K  (the color of the light emitted).  Some florescent lights are just terrible for reproducing color.  Shop Lights at 2700°K are absolutely awful IMO.  Some people can get violent headaches from the old style ballast turning the light on and off 120 times a second. The new electronic ballasts (like those in CFLs) do not cause them. Like a lot of things you have to know what you are getting and do some research to find the best ones for many applications.  As has been said they save a bundle on electric as they produce the same amount of light at 1/4 of the amount of electricity used.

Janie, I´ll have a regular American breakfast, please - I don´t dig that English stuff! Haggis, black pudding, white pudding, beans on toast, kippers, Marmite, spam - not my cup of tea

My old ticker is doing what it is supposed to do - even in the right rhythm and blues now. I was told it is normal to have a minor arrhythmia after having a bypass done - whatever normal means in this case. I am on meds to stabilize the heart rate, and they seem to do their job pretty well.

We are sunny and going to 68F today..which will be a tad warmer than it was yesterday...it only got to 58F all day yesterday...in the dull....

Getting a few things done today downtown then it is off to attend to some evening workshops ...for w**k...don't you know...

RAY- WHEN Tioga county is ALLOWED to recycle or dispose of properly stuff at Broome COunty landfill or at a "waste collection day"collection site, they only take 4 foot and 6 foot flourescent bulbs AND you PAY them to take them! Tioga only once had a collection at the Town of Owego Town hall. ANd that was for metal and tires only. WE went and they didn't even have our address in their official "book", but since it is on our Drivers licenses they took our stuff.

Nuff said.

Good Morning,

That 4913 nose would look good in my living room all fixed up like it was coming out of the wall.

The State passed legislation requiring the electric companies to reduce the amount of power generated from fossil fuels by 20%. The intent was for power companies to invest in wind/solar/hydro/nuke power plants.  First Energy decided all of us should buy CFL, which would give them the 20% reduction the State wanted.  Now Lincoln Electric just installed a single windmill that can power 5,000 homes (I think it was 5,000). The total cost was around 3Mil. Why can’t the power company do the same thing?

Curt, the port area came out realistic. I poured the plaster and sanded it down to rail height.  I then used a pointed gasket scraper to remove the plaster from the inside of the rail.  Painted the plaster with a light grey primer then lightly hand sanded it to give it an uneven/weathered appearance. I test ran several cars through the area without any problems.  I moved over to the Hulett dock and installed the RR ties in the concrete abutments, then ballasted the 4 rails that run under the Hulett’s. Pictures will come when I can get all the cans, bottles, power tools, paint cans, and general trash off the module.
