morning

Ulrlich- Trust me, I do. Only reason I won't is if I'm driving my Farmall (Doesn't even have a cab, so...) or off roading through creeks. My Jeep's been lifted so its easier to roll and is a road queen.  Glad your back from your surgery

Rain- anyone want some? my yard now has a creek running through it.

ULRICH!!!- Glad you're doing ok.

Curt- Oh I knew you knew, you'd said so. I was just being...silly. Acting like I really saw giant Skunks. Some of us will do that stuff here, some won't. Ok, most won't. You should have been here when the dinosaurs invaded Sundown.

It seems everyone who needed my help......, is waiting to come at once, possibly with the intent on pushing me right up to the time when I'll have to leave for work (to which their response could likely be, "well, what am I gonna do now?" I'll respond "should have come over earlier, I told you I had to work at 5." They'll respond "I had things to do this morning." Indifferent I will generally bite my tongue at this point because I will remember that my life revolves around them and I made the mistake of having something to do when they wanted me to do something for them) That way there will be no time for me to squeeze in what I want to do for even a few miutes. I guess I could go down now until they get here, but as soon as I get doing something they'll showup. Of course they will not have brought what they needed or there will be a problem and that will put me up against the wire to go to work, and then the above conversation will take place except the end remark will be replaced with, "You said wait and didn't get started." Therefore making it my fault they are in this pickle barrel.

I love grateful people. Especially when it's family.

ULRICH, OLD BOY,  Welcome back to the land of the living.  Keep doing what you are told as we want you back, up and running as soon as possible.

You have sure had lots of prayers and best wishes happening here.  I believe Garry said that the Chapel Car had to stay open 24 hours a day as there were so many folks coming through for you.

Really hope your release date comes soon.   No pinching those nurses now !!!!!!!!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Chloe, I'll have a Breakfast Bagel w/ cheese and a cup of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR Mug.

Ulrich!!!!  You're back!  Glad you came through the surgery OK and pray you get to feeling better very quickly.

Curt, I do all the soldering and assembly of the Torti at the workbench, then install them under the turnouts.  At last count I have done 65 of them.  I use a terminal strip to do the final electrical connections after they are installed on the layout.  Here is photo of the setupo after installation on the layout if it is any help to you:

Here is a couple in progress on the workbench:

Also a couple videos from a soldering clinic I presented a couple years ago for the NMRA Division:

Hope they are helpful...

Have a great day everyone!

Morning All,

Plans today are to start soldering my DPDT's. There are 26 so I have no clue how long that will take. After that I will connect them to the power buss. I was thinking that I should bend the tortoise throw wire, install it, center it, and then solder the 2 leads to the Tortoise. After that actually screw it in place. My Dad offered to help when I install them. If anyone recommends a different sequence please let me know.

Ulrich- I am glad you are doing OK. I think when you posted there was a collective sigh of relief  from the diner. Take care of yourself and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Todd- Yeah I know the skunks are big for HO. I will probably just end up using the 2 smaller ones in the background. Please thank your Dad for his service. The barn is extremely easy to make and the price is right. Your mobile home looks great and I had to chuckle about the person going out the back.

Lee- Thanks again for your patience with all my wiring questions. I know I must be a pain in the butt at times. I honestly have no electrical or electronic expeirence, but I am learning.

Thank you to all the diner members and their family members for their military service. A special prayer to those families that have service members in harms way this Memorial day.

Everyone have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Sir Madog

I am fine, though not feeling well. The surgery went OK, but I must have lost a little more blood during the process than they´d figured I would. I feel weak and have an itchy feeling inside my body without being able to scratch it - aside from a nagging pain in my chest.

I was hooked up to quite a lot of monitoring equipment until this morning, so I was not able to get to my notebook yesterday. If everything goes well, I´ll be out of this place by coming Thursday.

Good to see you again Ulrich. I was thinking we were going to have to send in the 1st Infantry Division to find out what was going on. I had the same itchy feeling with my foot after the doc took some infected bones out of it. Like to drove me nuts!

yougottawanta

Jeffrey How is your ankle doing ? That is some Hornets nest, Hope the transformer doesnt go bad. Folks in that neighberhood may be with out power for a while! Ringing in the ears may be caused by nerve damage in the ear. I have it from a car accident (head trauma) . It can also be caused by other factors such as exposer to loud noises, diet defiences etc... It can be masked by other sounds. fter a while you dont even notice the sound , your brain kinda of makes it background noise after a while . Still it is annoying at times.

The ankle (what's left of it) is doing OK for now. Hurts like heck where the bones are grinding against each other. The foot is rolled inward at about a 75 degree angle and seems to be holding at that point. They finally got the paperwork for my brace through to Medicaid and it's under review. Only took about four months! It was submitted in January (supposedly) and Medicaid says they received it on May 15. The doc says they've been having some problems with the clinic that did the review and he's thinking seriously about dropping them. I agree with the nerve damage idea concerning the ringing in my ears. It seems to be more to the left ear than the right and I've had an increasing tingling sensation that started on the left side of my head a couple or three weeks ago and has since spread down the left side of my jaw, neck, arm and ribs. I just had a physical not too long ago. My heart is healthy and my cholesterol count is in the low 90's. I'm no stranger to nerve damage as I've lived with it since 1962 due to spinal meningitis. It did a good job of messing with the order in which I hear things and that of course had direct impact on my speech, being able to understand speech, recognize objects and the list goes on. It's a condition called global or total aphasia.

Good Morning!! Coffee and toast please. Thanks

Welp, today started out..Hmm., or I should say, yesterday it looked like today was going to be a train room dayBig Smile, but then the shoes fellGrumpy. Today is a do something for everyone else daySigh. Plus I told this kid who graduated High School this year I would work for him tonight so he could attend the graduation party his parents are throwing. I thought he should be there and after all you only graduate High School once. Unless of course you’re Cletus Smothers. He actually graduated 3 times. He loved school, but his family didn’t have the money to send him to college, so he went back thru 12th grade 2 more times. Said he'd been looking at College classes and for the first year or two, they looked pretty much the same anyway. He got a job selling to contractors at some Contractors supply house somewhere after his second year of “College”. He only had one more year to go anyway. I asked him once if he was gonna go for his Bachelors degree. He said no, he thought he'd rather get married.Dots - Sign

Good morning,

My former FIL’s doublewide was hit by lightning; it split open the siding and burned out every appliance including a toaster.  The computer was on a surge protector and survived without a scratch.

Curt, it’s DC, so the worst thing that will happen is the turnout will move the opposite direction you wanted it to, then all you do is rotate the DPDT 180 degrees or swap the wires around.

Today was going to be train room day; but that’s not going to work out…

Blessings to all of you!

Edit: TSF - I just saw the posts about seat belts. I had two bad accidents in my life and without a seat belt, I would not be around anymore. Please wear them every time you drive a car - they are life savers!

Good evening. Nachos please. Use medium sauce and a Dr Pepper to wash it down thank you.

GOOD GOSH DID YOU GUYS SEE THE SIZE OF THEM SKUNKS???!!!

Went to the Chinese buffet when we went to the Walmart for groceries. Once again Brenda attempted to engage a waitress in conversation other than what to drink. Something I believe I forbade her to do if memory serves me. She wanted to know what some writing on a picture said. She asked the waitress and pointed. Twice. The waitress responded “oratory mooshu sa shayka” or something like that. Brenda looked at me and then back at the waitress. I said “say thank you” Brenda responded “what?” the waitress then said….”Sorry, I don’ta speak English.” I looked at Brenda and said “I’m actually surprised she didn’t say “no Pepsi…, Coke.”

Johnboy- Touching video, thanks for linking. My Dad was a WWII vet. SSG Radio Operator for HQ Battery VI Corp Artillery.

Curt- I’m not surprised the barn looks small. Actually what I mean is I'm glad it looks small. I scratch built the barn in the tourist Trap Town and though I forgot what the measurements I used were, (they were approximately right. Within a foot or two anyway) it too looks small. Makes me feel better. Thanks for posting I will order it for sure. I like the way it looks and will make a nice dance hall. Good job on your part too.

Ken- Bowl of sugar water.

Got a few progress pics of one of the mobile homes. Still need to fade the blue and dirty it up juuuust a tad. This one is going to be old, but not really run down.

Thinking about having someone exiting the back stairs Whistling Devil

Also remember I told you about the cheap bid for the lettering contract the railroad excepted a while back and why you should check their work before accepting ? Well here’s the picture I promised.

I think I’ll keep it that way. Kinda neat. Believe it or not, it’s harder to notice than you’d think. I see I need to work on the paint on one side. I’m not real keen on Badger paint. That side needs some scratches or rust I suppose.

HOLY COW!!!!! Now we have HORNETS!! And judging from the size of the nest, enough to populate Rhode Island!!!! When do we move? This place is getting dangerous.

Evenin' folks!

Just a decaf for me tonight Janie.

Just stopping in to see what has been going on in here this evening and catch up on the news....

Since the liquid sunshine didn't appear today amongst the clouds, I decided to mow lawn again.....  Put the mulching attachment back in and had at it.  Except for the every now and then shutting down thingy, it did pretty well.  I hope early next week (Tuesday???) the new key should arrive.  I hope that cures the problem.  If not it may need to have the heat switch inside replaced.  We shall see....Sigh  I also weeded the asparagus plot and removed a bushel basket or so of Morning Glory vines...  have to keep after them or they destroy the asparagus fern.  the tuber like root of the Morning Glory is darned near impossible to get rid of, so I just keep removing as much of it as I can.

Got most of the small roof done for the Engine House today, and also repaired a minor little electrical problem in the lighting in it.  I will be running the lights off a 16v power source so the 12 volt bulbs are wired in series.  Gives a nice yellow glow THAT looks much like old style 1920's lights and should never burn out.  Had one set of 2 bulbs soldered together in a space under the bottom of the building.  At some point I evidently caught the wires on something and broke a wire.  So tonight I decided to solder them back together.  Got a small pair of side cutters to strip the wire since there was all of 3/8th" left on one of them.  Gently tried to strip it.....  No dice.  tried again with just a tiny bit more force......  Cut the wire leaving about 1/8" left to use....Grumpy  Got out a nickel-silver track joiner, crushed it a bit after cutting it in half, gave it a shot of liquid rosin flux, then my usual solder on the 25w iron trick.  Worked like a charm!  Good solid solder joint and the lights work fine.  The wire that still had insulation on it is now imbedded in the solder in the rail joiner.........Big Smile  The whole thing is also now glued with a drop of Goo to the under side of the building where it can't get broken again.  If it last 20 or 30 years, I will be very happy.....Whistling

I sure hope we hear from Ulrich tomorrow!  Starting to get worried about him.

Jeffrey, THAT looks like a White Faced Hornets nest....  Very, very nasty little critters!

have a relaxing and restful night all!

SoapBox But I realy do dislike being mis lead. What am I talking about.? Do you remember when they started this ? The first lie was that there would be no fine (yea right ) then they could not pull you over because one was not wearing a seat belt . I told my friends when they started THAT garbage bag of lies that in no time there would be fines , pulling people over for no seat belts etc... I hate it when they lie to us to get a toe hold to future taxes (aka fines) for not obeying some new vehicle violation.Phew .... After that I think I will have some Blueberry P i e .Very busy day three loads of laundry, cleaned the house, went to the dump, mowed and weed eating , after I fixed the stinking weed eater , I have the worse luck with those things. Got Groceries, fixed dinner, fixed flourscent Under cabinet light, picked up the church van for taking others to Church tomorrow, went out to meet with some clients about a side job , pick up deposit check to start. Took care of the little ones boo boos.Put the littleones to bed. Geez am I tired! And not a second for any MMR !Sad

Barry .... You certainly have many interesting old photos.

JohnBoy ... Thanks for posting the link. I watched it all.

Todd ... Should we leave the side door open/ I would be good to hear from Jim CG.

Chris ... I liked the picture of the red geep. .

Today ... I took  sanity break, and worked several hours on the layout. Mostly scenery.

Where are JR, Der John, Dick, Duke, and several others? .....

Everybody .... Any thoughts for locating the diner for June? .... It's a very long swim to its May location. We'll let Ulrich rest this time if he wishes to do so.

Team Steam Fan,

If that is what happened you are putting your helmet on wrong.......

Johnboy out..............

First time I have smiled all day!

Flo, yes you know what I want and keep them coming! Beer

Work Front, or is it a retirement home? Spent most of the day staring out the window hoping for someone to talk to. Shaun and I only had 5 customers in 10 hours! Grumpy Shaun had $910.00 and I had $1539.00 for only $2449.00. Not a good Saturday by my self, much less with a extra person in the store.

Still have a fighting chances to make "bounces" Big Smile Bonus but it looks like it is going to be harder that I thought.

WW II Vets I have been lucky to have meet some in my time, and got to thank them in person. One time when I was at a hotel in St Paul the ices maker was out on my floor. Went to another floor to get some ice and stumbled across room where survivors the 101'st Air Born and Bastogne where having a reunion. Stepped in to pay my respects and told them I served in the 18th Air Born that at the time was part of the 3rd Army and was commanded by General Patton (Blood and Guts Son)

I had 50 new best friends and the drinks where on the house for me. (3rd Army saved there bacon in the Battle of the Bulge and George Patton was the CG). The war stories I heard that night made me prouder of what they did for our country.

Moving on, anyone know what will kill Nat's? My garage is being over ran with the little suckers!Grumpy Raid does not phases them. Any ideas Please.

Ulrich I sure wish Ulrich and asked Petra to drop in and give us up dates. I am pretty sure he is fine, but still worried none the less.

Well, guess I am pretty much typed out.

  See you all Sunday.

Afternoon All,

Johnboy- That was a awesome video for a generation that gave so much for this country.

Galaxy- I would be very happy to trade with you Sun Days for Rain Days.

Todd- The barn took about 20 minutes to build once I figured out the inside bracing. I have not added the door trim as it needs painting. It  also seems a little small but for $12 I am happy.

A friend on a skunk chat room sent me these for my layout. They are a little big so they will be put in the background somewhere.

There's a world of hurt on the bottom of this transformer in Pennsylvania. For those who have never seen one, that's a hornet nest. The photo was taken on my younger sister's property.

 teen steam fan:

Morning. Coffee please

helmets- they are a good thing and they aren't. I always wear one while riding my quad. Mainly because the trails I ride on aren't the best maintained. But my helmet has saved my rear twice already.

Whistling

Team Steam Fan,

If that is what happened you are putting your helmet on wrong.......

Johnboy out..............

Johnboy.....  ROFLMAO!!!

The big problem in a car crash is the second crash....  The first is when the car hits something (or something hits the car), and the second is the occupant(s) hit the car or something else!  Actually I agree with Chris and Curt, If an adult doesn't want to wear a restraint, they should be able to make THAT decision for themselves....  But as has been said, I shouldn't have to pay for THAT person's bad decision.  Unfortunately THAT is what happens, directly or indirectly.  Are we really ready to say at the hospital,  sorry, he wasn't wearing his seat restraint and won't be able to pay the bill so we won't treat him or her???

Opps... I see the soap box heading my way.........

Whistling

This is not Railroad related, but is so very important this Memorial Day Week-end.

Please watch

This is a trailer for a full length documentary about Honor Flight. They are trying to get 50000 views before Memorial Day. It's only 2 min long and you need to view the whole thing to be counted. It would really help if you watch it and send it to other folks who would enjoy it.
Thank you,

jeffrey-wimberly

Woke up this morning to an incessant low pitch ringing in my ears. Hope it goes away soon. It's most distracting. It's nothing new but has never lasted this long before. It usually lasts only a few seconds.

Answer your phone. Been trying to call you all morning.......... HA! (Sorry, couldn't resistLaugh)

Good Morning!!

Cup of Dark Roast please, Taco salad and a piece of Strawberry Rhubarb pie if Ray hasn’t eaten all of it. Thank you. What? Hey, I don’t get in much during the day or evening and I get kinda tired of breakfast food all the time. Especially when seeing the guys have ordered ribs, hot beef sandwiches, Mexican food, all that good stuff. Kinda throws a hankerin on me. Besides, who said you had to eat certain foods for breakfast? The Chinese don’t, The Koreans’ don’t and neither shall I (harumph).

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. “Likely”, in this instance, is 60%.

Curt- That barn you described is the barn I am going to get also. Actually, by my plans, I should have had it already. But, you know what they say about plans. It is to be the dancehall across from the Post Office/General Store/Bar. Wasn’t sure what it would be like for 12 bucks, I mean it’s hard to find any structure for less than twenty let alone 15. I was kinda curious if it was even a halfway decent kit. It looked pretty good in the flyer and it’s just the design I wanted. Let me know what you think of yours.

Chris- Naw, I had plywood without foam for a long time. I also see many beautiful builds out there that do not use it. If you need bumps or hills you’d do it the same as if you had foam. The only advantage I see, real advantage that is, is if you wanted a small depression or dig out or something like a little ravine that you could just dig out. With plywood, you’d have to cut the wood, but it can be done, I had one, it was just best to have prior planning.

YGW- Great news on the OH! Always like hearing that kind of news.

Ray- Beautiful scene there.

Ken- Like Ray said, I pretty much ignor the spelling errors of others and hope they do the same for me, which they obviousl;y do. Probably because they know I am a perfect speller, it's just this keyboard doesn't always put out what I type. I may need a new one someday. Most times we can figure out what someone means real easy just by knowing what they are talking about. What makes yours "interesting" sometimes is the words the spellcheck "thinks" you mean. Don't feel alone, I've had some pretty good humdingers spelled "correctly" for me too.

I agree with Curt and Chris on the seatbelts as far as the law. It’s dangerous to sit in the middle of a bon fire, but there‘s no law against you yourself doing it.(yet) There is against you throwing someone else in there. So far, as far as I know, there is no proof that not wearing a seatbelt endangers the lives of anyone other than the person not wearing the seatbelt. Yes, you could probably bring out one or two instances if you dug hard and long enough, but I’m sure Styrofoam has caused more deaths or illnesses. Where does the government stop directing peoples individual freedoms so to speak? I’m not talking “freedoms” that involve other people, but those that involve me only.

That being said, I wear my seatbelt all the time, every time, no matter the distance. I agree you’re taking a gamble not to. It‘s a risk I choose not to take and I think you‘re silly...Hmm, nay, stupid, for taking that chance if you do. But that is your choice for you, not mine to make for you.

I thought that thing hanging out the window on Barry’s pic yesterday might have been a siren. Or…, a small missile launcher. Great for traffic jams I’d think. But, I don’t know if I’d chance Googling “homemade nuclear warhead” just yet.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Mornin',

So, CUDAKEN is getting bonuses for bouncing around on his mattress???? I wonder if his genital breeze has anything to do with this??? Smile, Wink & Grin

Heck, I dunt tiipe toooo gud meself sumdays.

Seat belts and helmets. OK, I'll weigh in on this. Seat belts: I figure, if an ADULT wants to risk flying through their windshield, getting tossed out of their vehicle (which the vehicle resents, by the way, and it WILL try it's best to catch up to the tossed out occupant), etc., etc., etc.; then THAT is their choice. BUT, don't ask me to pay the bills resulting from THAT choice. Helmets: I've seen a few biker incidents where the helmet only made the difference between an open casket and a closed one... A closed head injury will kill you just as well as having your head cracked open. Again, an ADULT should be able to make the choice for themselves wether whether to wear one or not. But, again, don't ask me to pay for the results of their choices.

FWIW, the day we rolled our pumper near Central City, I was "supposed" to have the seat belt on. But, it was a hassle, especially when donning SCBA, so I didn't. Doug Webster, the other guy in back, didn't either. We were both pitched out when it rolled over. I think we are the one-in-a-billionth time THAT was a good thing. Had I been belted in per OSHA, etc., my head would've been crammed down into my chest.Surprise Getting tossed out literally saved me...but, Engine 184, upset THAT her crew had been pitched out and deserted her, found a way to land (wheels up) on top of me.

Bottom line: liberty and personal responsibility. Make your choice, but be prepared to pay the consequences yourself for the choice you make.

However, if you do wind up dead/dying in the ditch...you might have THIS for your last conscious vision...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It sounds like the Wife has found the mower, figured out how to start it, and is attempting to finish the mowing (front yard). Maybe I oughta make her up a little certificate for re-certifying/re-qualifying in lawn mower operations...
