Morning all,

LEST WE FORGET: let us remember all the fallen veterans who went before us to save our freedom!

Kept power all throuhg the thunderboomers Storm Umbrella of last night too! Amazing. Apparently a tree that was half fallen had finally fallen over taking out our substation. Oh goodie. THat was why we were out of power yesterday. SOme people in some areas are STILL without power form last Thursday's storm!

had to turn off air conditioners and the dehumidifier last night due to storms!. We have pulled a whole bucket a day of moisture out of the air EVERY DAY here since we started using it in the early spring! That shows you how much dampness we have, as windows {except yesterday} remain closed as we go from using heat to using A/C.

WEll today posta b very hot 90's, so I HOPE we don't loose power again. We went form chilly-ish very damp and rainy {almost litterally every day rain} to Hazy, Hot, and Humid in one fell swoop. Still needed the A/cs running as the cooler weather was still warm enough and even on cloudy days it gets VERY warm in a tin can like a trailer!

Enouhg about the weather. WHat else is new? Dunno.

Printed off some coupons to use at the grocery store. saves us a bundle, not quite like those "extreme couponers" on the TV show, but saving $20 in coupons and buying only stuff only on sale for another $20 off a $102.00 order is good! AND we got 70cents off per gallon of gas at Sunoco. paid only $3.26 for gas the other day to fillup the tank on the KiA. COst only $50 to almost fill up all the way, a savings of $11.20!! well worth the effort. OF course we got an extra $0.30 cents off per gallon by buying just over $20 of Unilever products {with coupons and on sale} alone. We used to do all our shooping at wally world, but we can save more at the grocery store where they double or raise the value of coupons to nearest $1 whereas wallyworld DOES tke coupns but only at face value. ANd wally world is a TRICKY place to shop. *gasp* the "Great value" or "Sam's Choice" storebrand or generic stuff is NOT always the better price and people get fooled into thinking it is cheaper! Buyer Beware!

The problem with taking a diuretic, though it may reduce fluid retention and "water weight", but man you gotta pee a hundred times right after you take it. There should be a whole chapter on that in the book "Five Miles to the Outhouse", by Willy Makeit.

WEll, off for the day. maybe i can get some laundry done. Was gonna do that yesterday ha ha. I wasn't aobut to beat my laundry with rocks in the backyard!!!

To all those that served before me, to those that served with me, and to those serving today; thank you for your service…

Jeff, a good source for hobby paint is JoAnn fabrics. They sell small and large bottles of water based paint that work very well on models, and in air brushes.  You can sign up to have coupons mailed or emailed to your house.  They also have a grand collection of “weeds”.

Ulrich, welcome back!

Ray, All the wires on tortious?  What does each one do for you???

Curt, no problem we have all been there.

 Busy weekend here:

Installed 2 new flag poles, waterline for an ice maker, removed an old grill, installed gutters on a house, grub-ex the yard, transplanted bamboo to my back fence line, laundry, and today I’ll be doing courtesy exams at a local marina.

Memorial Day - unknown in Germany. Paying respect to about 3.3 million servicemen who died during WW II would not be "politically" correct - what a world, what a country!

My thoughts and prayers go the two German servicemen, killed on duty in Afghanistan a few days ago - and their families, who now will be without a father, a husband, a son or a brother.

Thank you to all who have served.Bow

Good Morning!! Just Dark Roast coffee please. Thank you.

Sunny, with a high near 92.

Grandson spent the night. This morning there were children shows on TV. No wonder we have crime in the streets. I too would try and get sent to jail if I had to watch that stuff.

Ulrich- My Father served in WWII. In Europe and France. Yes the “enemy” for him then was Germany. However one thing he said a long time ago that has stuck with me ever since, and I apply the idea to the Arab’s and Muslims today. What he said was “We were fighting the N*zi’s, not the Germans.”

If I get movin now, I may have time for some choo choo’s later on.

I’ve always wondered. If France is part of Europe, why do they always say “ ….Europe and France”?

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Jeff- Weeds…., flowers…, like you, I see no difference. Well Blue Bonnets are nice. Doesn’t it just torque you off to see what you and people like you ( the ones with legitimate issues) have to go through to get just what is required to get by, and then see people who milk and tweak the system just skate out of there with all the gravy? Does me and I’m not even involved. How does it make you feel to lose your handicap parking space to someone who literally RUNS from their vehicle to the front door of the buffet to beat the crowd? (rhetorical question. I’m sure I know.) Many times me and Mom had to walk to the door with her walker after losing to someone who could move better than me. At 22 years old you should NOT have to have your Mother call you to make sure you’re up for work.

I'm almost 51 myself (July 7th). It really burns me up when I see someone who can literally sprint the 100 meter dash and have no handicap placard or card anywhere in sight take one of the few designated spaces. I write their tag number down and turn it in. Whether anything gets done about it or not I don't know. I can get through the 100 meter but the US Postal Service will pass me several times.

Morning All,

Happy Memorial Day. Thank you to all that have served and are currently serving our country. Prayers to the families of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.

At w**k today. It is already hot and sticky...not a good sign of things to come. I figure I will atttach the DPDT's to the power supplies Thursday. I will take a picture.

Urich- Probably it is not politically correct but I don't think it is wrong to mourn for so many of your country men that for the majority had  no choice in the matter.

Blownout- That is a great picture.

Todd- I thought the same thing as Lee. I will only have 2 wires going to the tortoise's.

Actually since I have taken up walking wiht a cane {even around the house} I have found that often I get more "respect and consideration" when going through doors or whne shopping they see the cane in my cart and often will ask if I need a carry-out for my order.{NOT at WAlly world though}.  I have learned it is very hard to not have two hands available at all times.{one has a cane in it}. I have also found that handicapped spaces are not always a good place to park as they are often in front of the doors, and people walk rihgt out of them into hte parking lot behind with no nevermind to who is backing a car out! I'm not really at a  point where I need the battery cart to ride on YET, so naturally I don't take one, though I could be eligeable.

My mother had MS and was wheelchair bound for half her short life. SO I understand the problems disabled people have, but I DO take exception to those who don't need it.

I have seen glares form someone who is much older and has a handicapped plate or hang tag when I get to a spot to park before they do. Then they see me get out with my cane, while they can still walk without one and their demeanor changes. I guess they feel "lucky" they are not using a cane-YET.

Dunno.

Good morning. It's 74° and cloudy. The high will be 90° and mostly sunny and breezy.

Nothing special planned for today. I might go to Wal-Mart later. I need a new roll of paper tape for my label maker and I may hunt around for a new movie. Speaking of movies, a couple of days ago (5/28) I ordered the Star Trek Next Generation movies collection. Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis. Total cost $32.59 from Wal-Mart.com.

Me again,

I must be on the way to recovery - I am bored to death. Nothing to do, just walking up and down the hall.

The food is terrible - black water named coffee, a dry roll, a bird dropping sized piece of butter, some jam - that´s my breakfast. Lunch was something I would not serve  my worst enemy.

LET ME OUTTA HERE!

Flo, whatever the gang is having, put it on my tab - I´ll pay cash when I am out of here.

Good Morning to all of you from the Finger lakes...  The birthplace of Memorial Day!  Yep, Waterloo, NY where a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War.  I will be spending much of the day at my son's house in Waterloo.

To all who have been affected by Man's inhumanity to man, greed, hatred, and all the rest my prayers are with you today (and every day).  I hope that one day War will not be the way humanity solves its problems! (I have my doubts it will happen....).  Please take time to reflect on those things we can do to make the world a better place as well as remembering those that gave so much for us.

Todd, your father was a very wise man!  Oh, I did actually think about adding some cobwebs to the rafters, but but figured if I could see them they would be way over scale..... Smile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich, hope you are recovering well and you are well enough in a couple days to make a break for it!!  BTW, I got the "n" infection over 35 years ago...  I was lucky, I got over it! Whistling

Lee, tortoise wiring.....  I use the internal switches in the tortoise to power the frogs.  So 1 & 8 are the DC power to the machine routed through a DPDT toggle.  4 & 5 lead to the Frog, and 2 & 7 and 3 & 6 are track power in.  i use both of the circuits for the frog power for redundancy, but one of the switches could be used for some other purpose as well.  One of things I love about the Fast Tracks turnouts is they are easy to solder feeds in places the wire will not show....  I plan to rip out track and turnouts where I haven't started any scenery and replace with hand laid track and turnouts....  So much better than the Atlas turnouts I used!

Oh, we got a real good light show and some high wind right after I shut down the computer last night!  Twas daylight at times....  I stayed up and watched for an hour or so until it passed over.  No damage to my property, but I bet some limbs came down nearby!  the cats went into hiding for the whole time.....

later!

Jeff,

I didn't know you were a Trekker!  I've felt like I was the only one on this forum.  I'm a big fan of all of the series (ST original, Next Gen, DS-9, Voyager, and I even learned to like "Enterprise", inspite the continuity issues).  To me the JJ Abrams movie was a major letdown as far as the storyline history.  I watched the fan made Star Trek "Of gods and men" movie on YouTube, which I felt was well made inspite of the small budget.  Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig were outstanding and it was good to see Tim Russ, Garrett Wang, Grace Lee Whitney and Lawrence Montaigne in it as well.  One character that I felt really redeemed himself was the actor that played the Captain of Enterprise-B in the "ST Generations" movie where he seemed so corny.  He reprises his role of Captain Harriman with a  more mature and tougher approach in this movie.

If you haven't seen it yet, check it out on YouTube. It is in 10 parts.

Supper time!

Let´s see what we have here:

  • Colored water they call tea
  • 2 slices of bread, one of them Gernan "black" bread
  • A spoonful of margarine (teaspoon)
  • 1 slice of cheese
  • 1 slice of jelly with pieces of meat in it
  • A tiny bag of salt & pepper
  • 1 gherkin
  • 1 sachet of sugar

Am I supposed to eat this? I better call the Flyin´ Pizza Service!

Petra brought some homemade sweet rolls and fruit for me - I shall be feasting on those!

3 more days to go! I am counting the hours.

I've been watching it since 1966. I have all three seasons of the original series, all the animated shows. I heve all the movies on VHS and I am working on getting them all on DVD. I already have the 'Star Trek - The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home on DVD. I'm still looking to get The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country. I also seasons 1-4 of Enterprise. Haven't started on the Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager yet.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon,

This morning, I had the honor of covering one of four Memorial Day observances in North Liberty. Since then, I've edited/processed the pics and even got one sent to THAT Editor so she'll have a (hopefully) front page pic handy when she goes to put the paper together tomorrow morning.

ULRICH: Hospital food....sounds about as bad over there as it was for me in Dec. '96 after the fire engine rollover. So, I've got a busted jaw wired shut. I'm on a "liquid diet." The geniuses in the dietary department send me: mashed potatoes, ice cream, pudding and something I think might have been oatmeal. Hmm They finally got it figured out and started sending me beef broth and "coffee." I'm still, all these years later, not quite sure which was which! Some kind of warm brown liquid in one cup, another brown warm liquid in the other. Both with a delightfully nondescript "flavor." Also, I see you have the same nurse I did!!!

TODD: Brenda and Missy 'eh? By golly, sounds like it rains in Illinoissssssssssssss too! Between the Wife and Rerun, I have to keep a supply of disposable earplugs handy. Makes it hard to hear the fire pager, but worth it. I've come to re-name said ear plugs as "marital aids!"

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Memorial Day: Chuck Grassley, the "senior senator" from Iowa (R) posted this in his weekly e-newsletter: "In 1868, the founder of Memorial Day said, “Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic. At the risk of giving the soapbox a work-out, I'm not sure how "free" we are anymore...and I'd say we're about as "divided" of a republic as one can be short of coming to blows. But, here's hoping the lessons of the day are repeated and never forgotten.

"Freedom isn't free."

May we never forget those who have gone before to preserve this "shining city on the hill," this "last great hope for mankind." A sincere and heart-felt "THANK YOU" to all of our veterans. And yes, to our allies as well. Among barbecues and "big sales," it is easy to forget the sacrifices of our military, the sacrifice of families who have lost members in the service of our nation. It is also easy to forget the sacrifices of those who came back from war, but are forever changed.

"Thank you" just seems so...insufficient.

Good Afternoon Diners! Was later than usual getting to the computer because we unplugged  all the household electronics (including the DCC power source) due to a morning thunderboomer episode. It never got closer than six miles, but the surges are no respecter of distance, I understand. Yes we have surge protectors, but it isn't hard to unplug everything, and then we know we're better protected. BTW, what's a "Whole House" surge protector?

Todd & Ulrich:

DER!!!! Just about to try and get aholt of you myself. I knew you were having some vision issues. Better now? - John - good to see your are posting again - I was getting worried about your vision issue.
....Thanks for the concern, the double vision thing has pretty much cleared up, I'm waiting for word on what I trust will be a "Sign off" appointment sometime in June. Must get the job title of the very competent lass who fixed up the Fresnel lenses for my glasses. It was a kind of eye Dr. I'd not heard of before.

Ulrich:

John does all his wonderful work in N scale - he must be able to scale down his hands!
..Laugh my Ma did that for me in-utero!  Makes it hard to get an adult watch strap, but is handy Sigh for modeling!
Ray - beware of N scale! It is infectious!
...I was thinking a small spider could do the necessary cobwebs "for real". Mischief

Galaxy:

There should be a whole chapter on that in the book "Five Miles to the Outhouse", by Willy Makeit.
LOL, but getting too close has disadvantages in certain circumastances....

Was sent this by the local HO modeler in Sheet Harbour today....+

PS: "My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30 am this morning, can you believe that ... 2:30am!!  Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes" :~)

Ray:

BTW, I got the "n" infection over 35 years ago...  I was lucky, I got over it!

....but back then there was much more incentive to give up - or disincentive to continue.  Just like today with "Supper Bugs" - the disease is harder to resist and treat. Smile, Wink & Grin

Antonio:

Jeff, I didn't know you were a Trekker!  I've felt like I was the only one on this forum.  I'm a big fan of all of the series (ST original, Next Gen, DS-9, Voyager, and I even learned to like "Enterprise", in spite the continuity issues).
....Oh, we're everywhere! I must confess far less commitment to the Franchise than your comment reveals.(... check it out on YouTube. It is in 10 parts. [shock]) "The Big Bang Theory" is of course heavily sown with ST references; thus adding to the pleasure. Our favourite spoof is the movie "Galaxy Quest" - do you know that one? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0177789/   A year ago "yellowdingo" posted this comment on a possible sequel:
Galaxy Quest 2: Son of Kwan - a scifi epic in which Kwan is beamed out of a Guantanamo Bay holding cell by his inter-species son (who looks like a young Doctor Lazurus) and his companion/bodyguard (a large Rock monster) and transported to the stealthed shipyards. It is here we learn - by the longest flashback - that this youngster is indeed named Lazarus and has travelled into the past using the Omega Molecule where he set up a small Television company and financed a barely watchable scifi series called Galaxy Quest...The Casting of actors for the series becomes a who's who of noobs until he discovers a young wannabe stunt man named Jason Nezbith.

Yeah...I can go for that.
...Son of Kwan, gotta like THAT!ClownWhat Kris and I notice and appreciate is the way ST  has entered the culture and public consciousness, in earnest of which I offer this from Sherman's Lagoon back when the OJ Simpson trial was ongoing.

I'll say TTFN, and either swap out sideframes on the Atlas GP 7s (new acquisition runs silent but is Ungraciously Pervasive, so silver sideframes) Older CN painted has noisy trucks but weathered black. So, I'm going to see if the silent UP truck mechanism remains silent in the CN frames. ...or I might just crawl back to bed and nurse the cold, as I did yesterday about this time.

Good afternoon.

Der John asked "So .... How is your day going?"

I will re-post this picture of recent weeks.

Anyhow, John ... I'm glad you re-joined us.  Ulrich wants somebody else to move the diner to its June location. How about Nova Scotia? That is a tight fit for the decoder!

Ulrich... Now, now.... hands off the nurse. Pay close attention to your doctor's orders, and do what he tells you. Don't worry about the food especially if Petra is sneaking in some scrumptious goodies.

Germany was in the news. Soon, they will end nuclear power production. Ulrich already told us Germany does not have coal power plants. Makes me wonder about Germany. I suppose they will need many squirrels on treadmills to generate electricity.

On the layout, I have almost completed my building materials supplier complex with scenery. Recent industries are my large bakery, my scrap yard, my power house, and now my building materials supplier. Also, I did the trestle in the above photo.

My 91-year-old Mom may be adjusting to her new home OK. Saturday morning, I called her and asked if she attended the Friday evening Bingo game. She said "No". Instead she was asked at dinner to watch a movie in a man's apartment with him. That's what she did.

Alos, when I was  there last week, I attended a monthly "Town Hall" meeting where the management explains the latest news about the facility.  Next, they answer questions from the residents. One of the elderly ladies had a major complaint. She said, she gets no prune juice at breakfast be cause they run out of iy before she can have it. ...... Now, that could be quite a problem.

Where are the MIA's today?

Jeff,I watched the fan made Star Trek "Of gods and men" movie on YouTube, which I felt was well made inspite of the small budget.

Thanks for the info on 'Of Gods and Men'. I'm downloading the first three parts now. My download speed is only 1 mbps so it takes a little while. I should be able to get it all in three download cycles, say about half an hour. I'll burn it onto a DVD later as a full length movie.

Happy memorial day afternoon guys. Thanks to those who have or are serving.

My finger is bothering me too much, unless I'm at work.  It isn't bleeding anymore, but I can't use the entier finger or it starts to hurt again.

Ken, Nickel Plate Road. There are 2, one is okay, but the other one is kind of beat up (pics). Could go for a few more SD40-2s to turn into BN units. What type do you have?

John, Some of them have traces on the board that say "cut for DCC". But if the board is left in, I don't think there is enough room for a decoder.

Ulrich, Get well soon. And make a break for it ASAP lol.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Sir Madog

Supper time!

Let´s see what we have here:

  • Colored water they call tea
  • 2 slices of bread, one of them Gernan "black" bread
  • A spoonful of margarine (teaspoon)
  • 1 slice of cheese
  • 1 slice of jelly with pieces of meat in it
  • A tiny bag of salt & pepper
  • 1 gherkin
  • 1 sachet of sugar

...

The nurse looks like this:

While I have been in the hospital the food has been good stuff to eat. Our local hospitals pride themselves on having good things to eat.

The only time I had trouble was when I was a "mush" diet. EVERYTHING WAS PUREED. I didn't quite need a straw or have my jaw wired shut, but was on a "mush diet" after being on clear liquids for awhile. The "Mush" that was "meat", for example, tasted like your description of butter earlier, Ulrich, only from an elephant.

ASK if they have an "alternative menu" you can choose from. Over here they do.

The other thing may be that they feed you horribly so you go home faster! Either that or so you loose weight.

...

And ALL my nurses have looked like that. Only in this country {the USA} can a fat, overweight, smoker of a nurse get away with telling the patient, " you need to loose weight"!!!!!! TAlk about the stove calling the kettle black!

Just try and relax Ulrich, or you'll give yourself a coronary!

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
