Good Morning...

[begin rant]On the seatbelt laws..weeellllllll...if'n yew dun't weer dem t'ings us'e go'n to find out pret' soon why yew need t'wear'em!!! I've seen way too many times up here examples of why it is a good idea...cars flippping end to end with people locked inside going all flippy floppy like rag dolls..getting jettisoned out from their cars into trees..head first...pile drove into the ground by their own cars...consider this..the cars we have now are quite capable of going really fast...if race car drivers use their seat belts..why not you?Whistling [/end begin rant]

We are getting a bit of clearing later on this morning..with the ever popular chance of those ol' loudenboomers again..of course we are only getting to 64F today and 69F tomorrow...Whistling..by Monday the steamvat will be in full swing for us'uns...Whistling

I'm on-call again this weekend...so I'se be pretty close to home again...

Flo, I'll have a breakfast bagel and a coffee please..I'll be at the RC for a bit....

Morning all,

teen steam fan

seatbelts- In Illinois, a biker doesn't have to wear a helmet while riding a bike but I have to use a seatbelt in my Jeep where I'm surrounded by STEEL. Still can'f figure that out.

I used to race when I was youner and you have a 6 point "seat belt" harness that pins you in. While a race car can catch on fire and reducing the amount of time to get out with a  6-point harness on, ONE IS VERY GRATEFUL it is there. If your car flips, you WANT that 6 point harness there HOLDING YOU IN PLACE. It doesn't matter that you are surrounded by STEEL! A flip can result in a broken neck, getting tossed out of the car with more bodily damage, etc. It also menas the emergency crews can find you faster. ANd the seat belt can save you from flying out or hitting het steering wheel or dash or windshield in a "free fall" type of impact. When the law came out in NY I was already wearing seat belts in the cars on the road. THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN! People who DOn't buckle up usually sustain serious injuries or DEATH. Besides it's that law in most states if not all now. In NY it's called "Click it or ticket" with a fine for not wearing one.

Well, We not going to Steamtown today. MOH is very tired form a 10 hr day yesterday and our train nut froned just returned form a 3 week tour in FL to help out his 94 yr/old G-ma with legal matters so his wifey-poo was nagging that "you haven't spent much time with me since you came back and now you want to run off again" speach. SO he ducked out. SO we decided not ot go. we would have left by now if we were going to get good handicapped parking and a spot in their small lot.

WE also thought about going to the "Stourbridge Line" in Honesdale PA to ride that train there, but no excusions this weekend except on Mon and MOH works monday. It is supposed to be where the first {vertical} steam train first ran in this country I believe. They apparently have a small museum too.

*sigh* * alas* we will go another time.

ENOUGH WITH THE DADBLASTIT RAIN!@!!!!!!! Storm Umbrella ENOUGH ALREADY! MORE storms Storm Umbrella rolled through yesterday evening and night! Friends of ours in an 1800's house had 3 big 300' tall historical trees fall on the driveway and miss the house by a 1/2 inch, and miss the barn, and just grazed the new car with a  leafy branch. They were told by their homeowners insurance "we don't cover trees". I thought that fell under "act of  God". Will cost them some dough to get teh trees cleaned up. THe guy who lives diagonally across from them had a tree split his house in half. He was not so lucky! OUr friends said it looked more like a tornado had bounced around out there.

WEll, I have some chores to attend to today so I better get going if we aren;t going to Steamtown or Stourbidge.

Morning guys

Looks like I forgot to change my alarm. I didn't have to wake up until 7:20, but I woke up at 6:20 because I didn't change my alarm from yesterday. No sense in trying to go back to sleep for another hour...

TSF, Florida has the same thing. Everytime I ride on a motorcycle I always wear a helmet. A few days ago someone on a motorcycle wearing no helmet hit a pedestrian. The rider got thrown from his bike and hit his head on the pavement at around 25mph. He's in the hospital with severe head injuries. Galaxy is right on all that stuff. I can attest to seat belts save lives because of the car wreck I got into 2 years ago.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good morning.

I returned last evening. Not much storm damage outside. Retrieved deck furniture. .... The power was restored only about 3 hours before I arrived. It was off about 2 days. Now, I need to clean the inside of the refrigerator and replace food.

Driving home yesterday. Traffic was backed up 15 miles for a work zone in AL. Workers were cleaning up hundreds of broken trees next to I-65. Also, I saw numerous broken light poles at interchanges awaiting repairs.  I will long remember seeing hundreds of houses in AL covered in large tarps because the roofs were blown off by tornados.

YGW .... I was very pleased to read the good news about your wife's cancer tests. I certain pray for her continued heeling and recovery. Good luck with new job. I hope you have time to visit the diner often.

Ulrich ... Thinking of you today, and praying for your recovery.

Ken ... Glad the numbers are adding up. ...Speling? ..I doent tipe gud eether.

Ray ... I really do like your scene with the culvert under the tracks.

Galaxy ... I hope you have fun at Steamtown.

Jerry ... Your photo makes me wonder. The little GE switcher has an extra pair of wheels looking like wheels from a Hi-Rail vehicle. The Budd passenger car has no windows. ..... If you make an exact replica on your layout, the rivet counters will go nuts.

Rob ... I hope your storm repairs will be completed soon. You've had some rough times.

Well, time to get to work. I hope to get to the layout and work on it soon, too.

Good morning. It's 73° and cloudy. The high will be 92° and it will be mostly sunny.

Woke up this morning to an incessant low pitch ringing in my ears. Hope it goes away soon. It's most distracting. It's nothing new but has never lasted this long before. It usually lasts only a few seconds. Oh well, just another thing I'll have to learn to live with if it doesn't.

Looks like a good day for mowing grass. Once I have that done I can start on some window treatments for my trailers.

Looking forward to hearing from Ulrich.

Morning All,

Well it is already hot outside. Only plans today are to go to the train club later with my Dad. MOH is meeting our daughter at 1200 to get their hair done. Sounds like quiet time to me.

My point about seat belts last night was that children need restrained in a car. They can't make appropriiate decisions for themselves. Now if a adult decides not to wear a seatbelt that is their decision and if they die because of it too bad. That is survival of the fitest.

Continuing sending prayers eastward to Ulrich. I was hoping to hear from him this morning. Does anyone know how to get hold of Petra?

I will try to check in later. Have a good day.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sour dough toast, please and thank you!

Just another beautiful day here in the Finger Lakes!  Currently 66°F under cloudy skies....  As Barry would say, "DULL"!  We should be getting a bit of liquid sunshine today in the form of Thuderthingies later this afternoon.  I think I will w*rk on the layout......

Seat belt/harness discussion....  STF, I always wear my seat belt!!!  Always!  When I was a senior in high school, back in the days when newish cars came equipped with just the belt THAT went around your waist, and wearing them was a recommendation, not a law....  I had been helping my dad with an emergency on the farm one morning and had missed the School Bus.  Dad said just take the Rambler American Station Wagon and he would take Mom to work in the truck.  I got into the car and sat on the buckle of the seat belt, said a couple unmentionable words and decided it was just as easy to put it on.  I had driven to my voice lesson the night before in Rochester.  I always wore it when I was driving any distance, but not usually just to drive a few miles into town.  That morning I went through the intersection right in front of the School.  I had the ROW, he had a stop sign on the side street.  An 84 year old man driving a Bonneville missed the brake and stepped on the gas.  He broadsided me doing 50MPH or so....  Since I was wearing the seat belt I was able to guide the Rambler between a maple tree and a telephone pole with less than a foot on either side.  I walked away with a couple of bruises, he went to the hospital!  Both cars ended up being totaled (We actually fixed the Rambler but 6 months later....found the frame was cracked).  The police said there was no doubt the seat belt saved my life.  I remember the G forces I felt.  I had 2 large bone bruises on my hips where the seat belt held me in place.  WEAR YOUR SEAT HARNESS!  Always!

Ken...  OK, now I see it....  Duh!  I just couldn't figure out what Bouncing on a mattress had to do with $$$  My brain takes things too literally sometimes.  I can usually figure out typos or misspelled words (we all do them at times). Bonuses!  Makes sense.

Chris, Ken, and Garry,  Thanks for your kind words.  I was quite pleased with the scene.  Have photographed it many times.

Hope you all have a great day and a great Memorial Day Weekend!

I remember all too well a certain incident involving a car that was in front of me..driving erratically suddenly going off the road into a ditch rolling end over end...and the people in the front seat bouncing around inside the car like they were ping pong balls...when I finally got to the car..none were aliveCrying

I see where you guys are going. And I admit seat belts do save people's @$$ and I wear mine, but... there are cases where a car/truck/suv flips and I WANT to be thrown from the inside. I've seen videos of guys crossing a bridge, truck rolls and lands upside down in the water. Guy was rock crawling and his Land Cruiser started to flip end over end. Landed on his top, Toyota kept rolling and he was standing there with the look on his face like 'What just happened?' guy walked away.

Should still be recommended. Just the lower insurance

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Mornin',

So, CUDAKEN is getting bonuses for bouncing around on his mattress???? I wonder if his genital breeze has anything to do with this??? Smile, Wink & Grin

Heck, I dunt tiipe toooo gud meself sumdays.

Seat belts and helmets. OK, I'll weigh in on this. Seat belts: I figure, if an ADULT wants to risk flying through their windshield, getting tossed out of their vehicle (which the vehicle resents, by the way, and it WILL try it's best to catch up to the tossed out occupant), etc., etc., etc.; then THAT is their choice. BUT, don't ask me to pay the bills resulting from THAT choice. Helmets: I've seen a few biker incidents where the helmet only made the difference between an open casket and a closed one... A closed head injury will kill you just as well as having your head cracked open. Again, an ADULT should be able to make the choice for themselves wether whether to wear one or not. But, again, don't ask me to pay for the results of their choices.

FWIW, the day we rolled our pumper near Central City, I was "supposed" to have the seat belt on. But, it was a hassle, especially when donning SCBA, so I didn't. Doug Webster, the other guy in back, didn't either. We were both pitched out when it rolled over. I think we are the one-in-a-billionth time THAT was a good thing. Had I been belted in per OSHA, etc., my head would've been crammed down into my chest.Surprise Getting tossed out literally saved me...but, Engine 184, upset THAT her crew had been pitched out and deserted her, found a way to land (wheels up) on top of me.

Bottom line: liberty and personal responsibility. Make your choice, but be prepared to pay the consequences yourself for the choice you make.

However, if you do wind up dead/dying in the ditch...you might have THIS for your last conscious vision...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It sounds like the Wife has found the mower, figured out how to start it, and is attempting to finish the mowing (front yard). Maybe I oughta make her up a little certificate for re-certifying/re-qualifying in lawn mower operations...

Answer your phone. Been trying to call you all morning.......... HA! (Sorry, couldn't resistLaugh)

Good Morning!!

Cup of Dark Roast please, Taco salad and a piece of Strawberry Rhubarb pie if Ray hasn’t eaten all of it. Thank you. What? Hey, I don’t get in much during the day or evening and I get kinda tired of breakfast food all the time. Especially when seeing the guys have ordered ribs, hot beef sandwiches, Mexican food, all that good stuff. Kinda throws a hankerin on me. Besides, who said you had to eat certain foods for breakfast? The Chinese don’t, The Koreans’ don’t and neither shall I (harumph).

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. “Likely”, in this instance, is 60%.

Curt- That barn you described is the barn I am going to get also. Actually, by my plans, I should have had it already. But, you know what they say about plans. It is to be the dancehall across from the Post Office/General Store/Bar. Wasn’t sure what it would be like for 12 bucks, I mean it’s hard to find any structure for less than twenty let alone 15. I was kinda curious if it was even a halfway decent kit. It looked pretty good in the flyer and it’s just the design I wanted. Let me know what you think of yours.

Chris- Naw, I had plywood without foam for a long time. I also see many beautiful builds out there that do not use it. If you need bumps or hills you’d do it the same as if you had foam. The only advantage I see, real advantage that is, is if you wanted a small depression or dig out or something like a little ravine that you could just dig out. With plywood, you’d have to cut the wood, but it can be done, I had one, it was just best to have prior planning.

YGW- Great news on the OH! Always like hearing that kind of news.

Ray- Beautiful scene there.

Ken- Like Ray said, I pretty much ignor the spelling errors of others and hope they do the same for me, which they obviousl;y do. Probably because they know I am a perfect speller, it's just this keyboard doesn't always put out what I type. I may need a new one someday. Most times we can figure out what someone means real easy just by knowing what they are talking about. What makes yours "interesting" sometimes is the words the spellcheck "thinks" you mean. Don't feel alone, I've had some pretty good humdingers spelled "correctly" for me too.

I agree with Curt and Chris on the seatbelts as far as the law. It’s dangerous to sit in the middle of a bon fire, but there‘s no law against you yourself doing it.(yet) There is against you throwing someone else in there. So far, as far as I know, there is no proof that not wearing a seatbelt endangers the lives of anyone other than the person not wearing the seatbelt. Yes, you could probably bring out one or two instances if you dug hard and long enough, but I’m sure Styrofoam has caused more deaths or illnesses. Where does the government stop directing peoples individual freedoms so to speak? I’m not talking “freedoms” that involve other people, but those that involve me only.

That being said, I wear my seatbelt all the time, every time, no matter the distance. I agree you’re taking a gamble not to. It‘s a risk I choose not to take and I think you‘re silly...Hmm, nay, stupid, for taking that chance if you do. But that is your choice for you, not mine to make for you.

I thought that thing hanging out the window on Barry’s pic yesterday might have been a siren. Or…, a small missile launcher. Great for traffic jams I’d think. But, I don’t know if I’d chance Googling “homemade nuclear warhead” just yet.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

This is not Railroad related, but is so very important this Memorial Day Week-end.

Please watch

This is a trailer for a full length documentary about Honor Flight. They are trying to get 50000 views before Memorial Day. It's only 2 min long and you need to view the whole thing to be counted. It would really help if you watch it and send it to other folks who would enjoy it.

The big problem in a car crash is the second crash....  The first is when the car hits something (or something hits the car), and the second is the occupant(s) hit the car or something else!  Actually I agree with Chris and Curt, If an adult doesn't want to wear a restraint, they should be able to make THAT decision for themselves....  But as has been said, I shouldn't have to pay for THAT person's bad decision.  Unfortunately THAT is what happens, directly or indirectly.  Are we really ready to say at the hospital,  sorry, he wasn't wearing his seat restraint and won't be able to pay the bill so we won't treat him or her???

Afternoon All,

Johnboy- That was a awesome video for a generation that gave so much for this country.

Galaxy- I would be very happy to trade with you Sun Days for Rain Days.

Todd- The barn took about 20 minutes to build once I figured out the inside bracing. I have not added the door trim as it needs painting. It  also seems a little small but for $12 I am happy.

A friend on a skunk chat room sent me these for my layout. They are a little big so they will be put in the background somewhere.

***Curt, neat barn. Have always liked advertizements on barn rooves.

Topped off the small trailer sprayer and headed out to the front pasture to spray weeds. Unfortunately, the old Optima marine battery is no longer holding a charge. It's really old, so no surprise. Just bad timing.Grumpy

Curt,

Tell us who made the barn kit?  That's really pretty neat.

That looks like a barn sold by Alpine Division Scale Models.

Whistling

Team Steam Fan,

If that is what happened you are putting your helmet on wrong.......

Johnboy out..............

First time I have smiled all day!

Flo, yes you know what I want and keep them coming! Beer

Work Front, or is it a retirement home? Spent most of the day staring out the window hoping for someone to talk to. Shaun and I only had 5 customers in 10 hours! Grumpy Shaun had $910.00 and I had $1539.00 for only $2449.00. Not a good Saturday by my self, much less with a extra person in the store.

Still have a fighting chances to make "bounces" Big Smile Bonus but it looks like it is going to be harder that I thought.

WW II Vets I have been lucky to have meet some in my time, and got to thank them in person. One time when I was at a hotel in St Paul the ices maker was out on my floor. Went to another floor to get some ice and stumbled across room where survivors the 101'st Air Born and Bastogne where having a reunion. Stepped in to pay my respects and told them I served in the 18th Air Born that at the time was part of the 3rd Army and was commanded by General Patton (Blood and Guts Son)

I had 50 new best friends and the drinks where on the house for me. (3rd Army saved there bacon in the Battle of the Bulge and George Patton was the CG). The war stories I heard that night made me prouder of what they did for our country.

Moving on, anyone know what will kill Nat's? My garage is being over ran with the little suckers!Grumpy Raid does not phases them. Any ideas Please.

Ulrich I sure wish Ulrich and asked Petra to drop in and give us up dates. I am pretty sure he is fine, but still worried none the less.

Well, guess I am pretty much typed out.

  See you all Sunday.

Good evening.

Ulrich... Hope you're recovering OK.

Ken ... Fingers crossed for the sales numbers.

Curt ..... I suppose you will not have many layout vistors with the black and white critters.

Barry .... You certainly have many interesting old photos.

JohnBoy ... Thanks for posting the link. I watched it all.

Todd ... Should we leave the side door open/ I would be good to hear from Jim CG.

Chris ... I liked the picture of the red geep. .

Today ... I took  sanity break, and worked several hours on the layout. Mostly scenery.

Where are JR, Der John, Dick, Duke, and several others? .....

Everybody .... Any thoughts for locating the diner for June? .... It's a very long swim to its May location. We'll let Ulrich rest this time if he wishes to do so.

Chloe

Can I have a Coffee, some of that stuff thats been brewing all day. Woke up on my day off at 6am!Bang Head. Will weigh in on seat belts. Wear them, dont mind them. SoapBox But I realy do dislike being mis lead. What am I talking about.? Do you remember when they started this ? The first lie was that there would be no fine (yea right ) then they could not pull you over because one was not wearing a seat belt . I told my friends when they started THAT garbage bag of lies that in no time there would be fines , pulling people over for no seat belts etc... I hate it when they lie to us to get a toe hold to future taxes (aka fines) for not obeying some new vehicle violation.Phew .... After that I think I will have some Blueberry P i e .Very busy day three loads of laundry, cleaned the house, went to the dump, mowed and weed eating , after I fixed the stinking weed eater , I have the worse luck with those things. Got Groceries, fixed dinner, fixed flourscent Under cabinet light, picked up the church van for taking others to Church tomorrow, went out to meet with some clients about a side job , pick up deposit check to start. Took care of the little ones boo boos.Put the littleones to bed. Geez am I tired! And not a second for any MMR !Sad

Garry thanks for the prayer. We value those very much.

Jeffrey How is your ankle doing ? That is some Hornets nest, Hope the transformer doesnt go bad. Folks in that neighberhood may be with out power for a while! Ringing in the ears may be caused by nerve damage in the ear. I have it from a car accident (head trauma) . It can also be caused by other factors such as exposer to loud noises, diet defiences etc... It can be masked by other sounds. fter a while you dont even notice the sound , your brain kinda of makes it background noise after a while . Still it is annoying at times.

Larry What is Hobo days ? Sounds like THAT could be interesting.

Todd Thanks for the encouragement

Curt Love THAT barn ! Chew mail pouch ! Used to see that on barns all the time. So neat! But what is that stench coming from around the other side of the barn, here kitty kitty : ).

Has anyone heard from Ulrich ? What kind of operation did he have ?

Good night all goota get some Sleep

Evenin' folks!

Just a decaf for me tonight Janie.

Just stopping in to see what has been going on in here this evening and catch up on the news....

Since the liquid sunshine didn't appear today amongst the clouds, I decided to mow lawn again.....  Put the mulching attachment back in and had at it.  Except for the every now and then shutting down thingy, it did pretty well.  I hope early next week (Tuesday???) the new key should arrive.  I hope that cures the problem.  If not it may need to have the heat switch inside replaced.  We shall see....Sigh  I also weeded the asparagus plot and removed a bushel basket or so of Morning Glory vines...  have to keep after them or they destroy the asparagus fern.  the tuber like root of the Morning Glory is darned near impossible to get rid of, so I just keep removing as much of it as I can.

Got most of the small roof done for the Engine House today, and also repaired a minor little electrical problem in the lighting in it.  I will be running the lights off a 16v power source so the 12 volt bulbs are wired in series.  Gives a nice yellow glow THAT looks much like old style 1920's lights and should never burn out.  Had one set of 2 bulbs soldered together in a space under the bottom of the building.  At some point I evidently caught the wires on something and broke a wire.  So tonight I decided to solder them back together.  Got a small pair of side cutters to strip the wire since there was all of 3/8th" left on one of them.  Gently tried to strip it.....  No dice.  tried again with just a tiny bit more force......  Cut the wire leaving about 1/8" left to use....Grumpy  Got out a nickel-silver track joiner, crushed it a bit after cutting it in half, gave it a shot of liquid rosin flux, then my usual solder on the 25w iron trick.  Worked like a charm!  Good solid solder joint and the lights work fine.  The wire that still had insulation on it is now imbedded in the solder in the rail joiner.........Big Smile  The whole thing is also now glued with a drop of Goo to the under side of the building where it can't get broken again.  If it last 20 or 30 years, I will be very happy.....Whistling

I sure hope we hear from Ulrich tomorrow!  Starting to get worried about him.

Jeffrey, THAT looks like a White Faced Hornets nest....  Very, very nasty little critters!

have a relaxing and restful night all!

Good evening. Nachos please. Use medium sauce and a Dr Pepper to wash it down thank you.

GOOD GOSH DID YOU GUYS SEE THE SIZE OF THEM SKUNKS???!!!

Went to the Chinese buffet when we went to the Walmart for groceries. Once again Brenda attempted to engage a waitress in conversation other than what to drink. Something I believe I forbade her to do if memory serves me. She wanted to know what some writing on a picture said. She asked the waitress and pointed. Twice. The waitress responded “oratory mooshu sa shayka” or something like that. Brenda looked at me and then back at the waitress. I said “say thank you” Brenda responded “what?” the waitress then said….”Sorry, I don’ta speak English.” I looked at Brenda and said “I’m actually surprised she didn’t say “no Pepsi…, Coke.”

Johnboy- Touching video, thanks for linking. My Dad was a WWII vet. SSG Radio Operator for HQ Battery VI Corp Artillery.

Curt- I’m not surprised the barn looks small. Actually what I mean is I'm glad it looks small. I scratch built the barn in the tourist Trap Town and though I forgot what the measurements I used were, (they were approximately right. Within a foot or two anyway) it too looks small. Makes me feel better. Thanks for posting I will order it for sure. I like the way it looks and will make a nice dance hall. Good job on your part too.

Ken- Bowl of sugar water.

Got a few progress pics of one of the mobile homes. Still need to fade the blue and dirty it up juuuust a tad. This one is going to be old, but not really run down.

Thinking about having someone exiting the back stairs Whistling Devil

Also remember I told you about the cheap bid for the lettering contract the railroad excepted a while back and why you should check their work before accepting ? Well here’s the picture I promised.

I think I’ll keep it that way. Kinda neat. Believe it or not, it’s harder to notice than you’d think. I see I need to work on the paint on one side. I’m not real keen on Badger paint. That side needs some scratches or rust I suppose.

HOLY COW!!!!! Now we have HORNETS!! And judging from the size of the nest, enough to populate Rhode Island!!!! When do we move? This place is getting dangerous.

Good Morning,

I am back!

I am fine, though not feeling well. The surgery went OK, but I must have lost a little more blood during the process than they´d figured I would. I feel weak and have an itchy feeling inside my body without being able to scratch it - aside from a nagging pain in my chest.

I was hooked up to quite a lot of monitoring equipment until this morning, so I was not able to get to my notebook yesterday. If everything goes well, I´ll be out of this place by coming Thursday.

Zoe, no coffee, please. I need some blood in an IV bag, A+ if you´d be so kind.

Blessings to all of you!

Edit: TSF - I just saw the posts about seat belts. I had two bad accidents in my life and without a seat belt, I would not be around anymore. Please wear them every time you drive a car - they are life savers!
