The house with the cracks that went from one window well, down the wall, across the floor and up the other wall to the other window well on each end of it with a third crack starting in the middle down the wall and across HALF the floor and a leakage at one corner Was A POURED CONCRETE FOUNDATION, NOT block. SO, Yes, It meant get out of the basement NOW!

Can you say 'MONEY PIT'? YIKES!!

Hey Galaxy

Rule of thumb on concrete block basement wall cracks is this - a diagonal crack implies some foundation settlement, a vertical crack needs to be looked at closer, and a horizontal crack near the mid-height of the wall means Get Out Of The Basement Now!

The house with the block foundation had the standing water in it. We didn't take time to look for cracks...standing water is a BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADD thing.

To bad, cuz it was really a nice house, a modular set on a poured concrete foundation, but they probably had had a structural engineer do a report on it and decided to let teh bank take it back cause it would need whole new foundation!!

Now that's a LOT of track to clean!

The trains are running continuously and most of the trains looked like they were dragging cleaning cars with them.  It really is huge, 1400 ft of track, according to their web site.

And here I thought my paltry 70 feet was a lot to keep up with.

Afternoon folks!

Just a RBF to tide me over to dinner Janie.

Simon nice pics.  I have a son who lives in Chicago.  I have to get out to see THAT place, I mean out to see my son........Smile, Wink & Grin

One of THOSE dyas here in the Finger Lakes.  Late this morning I went out to the shed and pulled out the lawn mower with the idea of tackling the swamp and hay field THAT used to be a lawn.... I set the mower up a couple notches and proceeded to try and cut it...  The sun was shining at the moment I opened the shed door, but the minute I had done one strip the sun went into hiding and a big black cloud appeared and decided to send some precipitation where I was.  Even after pulling the mower up a couple notches, the length I was trying to mow was at least 4" over the bottom of the deck and still wet from the rain last night.  I continued to mow in the rain until the batteries were dead (which didn't take very long due to conditions) Put the mower away after plugging in the charger and ran to the house as it was now raining quite hard.  As soon as I got in the house the rain stopped and the sun came out.....  Let the mower charge about 4 hours (80% charge) and went out this afternoon to do a bit more.  You will never guess what happened at THAT moment to the sun....  Oh!  You did guess.  Yep rained some more.  Made a few more passes, put the mower back in the shed and quit for today.  I got about 1/4 of the lawn done.  Supposed to have thunderboomers tonight and tomorrow......  I think i will pull the mulching thing out and go back to catching the clippings in the bag...  works better with heavy, wet grass we have this year.

Can never figure out....  I never, ever, put fertilizer on the lawn.  I don't use herbacides, grub poison, or any other chemical on it.  Why is my lawn the greenest and fastest growing in the whole d@mn neighborhood???

Got to get showered and ready to head out to Rochester tonight for the Museum Meeting.

Later!

Hi Chaps,

Cudaken is on his way over here, turns out he needs to borrow my throttle again!  Me thinks that his throttle does not like cigarette smoke!!

On the subject of layout photos, my eldest son just graduated from the local Catholic grade school.  2 weeks ago, I got to accompany him on his field trip to Chicago.  We stopped by the Museum of Science and Industry and I took a few shots

TMarsh

It's been close to 4 hours since I left the Post Office if anyone cares.

Of course someone cares. I care. I've just been tied up with other things. Had lunch with my parents then went to see my foot foot doctor then went to the bank to make a deposit then to the pharmacy to spend the money I had deposited then stopped by the library on the way back home. Checked out two Model Railroader books. 'Basic Structure Modeling' by Jeff Wilson and 'Easy Model Railroad Wiring' by Andy Sperandeo. Boy, my spell checker went nuts on that name. Gave me a list a possibilities.

Afternoon guys.

WE set out to look at 3 houses today, ended up looking at only 2. The 3rd one sold in 7 days, becasue it was priced right. TO BAD we couldn't get a time with our agent that quick!

One we looked at was largely level, but on a hillsidehigh tothe right and low to the left. It would have been PERFECT for us...IF we could get it fromthe bank at our price! EXCEPT for one little thing...the foundation had two side-to-side wall through floor to wall cracks in it! They were fairly level cracks, BUT enough to possibly knock it out of whack. They had two dehumidifiers running connected to a sump pump. Another not-so go sign. It was STORMING RAIN like you wouldn't believe when we got there. And LAST, but not least, the added 2 car {if you can call it that} garage leaked water in from the high side, and the basement had h2o seepage at the floor/wall on the high side too! It was a modular taht had electrical wiring run along the center beams BEFORE it was set onteh metal posts..could cause a short in wiring. no wonder the bank was trying to unload it...cause it WAS NICE, but we take NO CHANCES on that foundation. AND ALL the windows save one had broken seals inthe double panes! SO it was a no-go for us, even if we could get it at a nice price than they wanted.

The 2nd house didn't show it in the pics, but ALSO was on a hill, but not bad, except a horrible to get into drive with a sheer drop off on one side, though. It wasn't too bad inside, sat all winter so msuty, though it was showing age for sure {50's}. But the basement wwas block {cinder blocks} and had STANDING WATER in it! The front porch roof leaked right into the porch and was a complete tear off. The back "patio" slab was heaved so that it washed water towards the house by about 6 inches! The old retaining wall was old RAILROAD TIES {see I can make it RR related!} that were crumbling with a wood fence on top that had seen better days. SO another no-go!

It's too bad abbout the first one, though cause it would have been PERFECT for us, but not taking ANY chances of structural issues! and Leakage!

The third house was another one that could have been "perfect" but sold in just 7 days, as the pricing was right and we didn't get tehre first! Dang it all I HATE when that happens!

There is one to look at on Sat on a slab. If it is all carpeted {or hardwood- which should really NOT be put down over concrete slabs} we won't be able to see if the slab has cracked or not. That can be as bad.

We got another listing today form our agent 2 days on market, bank owned foreclosure, but man! the taxes alone for a 2 br/ 1 bath  1100 sq foot out inthe country are over $5K!!! we may look at it...it DOES have a 500' deep lot, so I think they are taxing agricultural farm on the land...nearly 1 3/4 acres. But it sure as dang ain't no farm or even a farmette! HAving our agent check the tax situation, thats a bit more than we want to pay for a small house.

On another note...when I had my colonoscopy my blood sugar was high{which was starving}, and the starving blood work last week showed high, so now I have to see the Dr. about that and find out if I am transitioning into adult onset diabetes. Not so high yet that it is confirmed especially without further testing, but high 100's is not good. Crying

ULRICH- Prayers are with you...extra prayer candle for you you have had so much sadness around you lately!!!

WEll, I see I have another email from agetn...gotta run!

Me again,

I just want to say thank you for all the support you give in these bad times. If it weren´t for you, I´d probably turn insane (Petra thinks I am already). Taking care of elderly people is not an easy task and it takes the rest of my energy to overlook the selfishness which my Dad shows, but he is my Dad and I am happy that I still have both of my parents. Well, I shouldn´t be complaining, but it is just because I feel lousy myself. I have my own heart surgery coming up on the 26th - it is only yet another bypass, but I feel uneasy about it.

Curt - we are always glad to see pictures of layouts here. It tickles our imagination and is a help for all of us, so don´t be shy to post whatever you have. You know, not all of us have layouts like Ray´s or Garry´s ... Whistling

Janie, may I have some coffee, please. I´ll be in the back booth, keeping quiet for now.

Hello everybody...

Good to see each of you. Unfortunately, there are some MIA's, and I would encourage DIners to email them if you can.

Ray ... That was inspiring to read your post about the young lady. Thanks for sharing.

Ulrich ... I'm sad to learn of your Mom's latest health problem, and prayers continue for her. I'm glad you like the E5's and other E units. I like modeling in the 1945-1965 era because I have fond memories of the first generation diesels.

Jerry ... Hope your new chair arrives and things work out OK for you. Your layout looks good. Mobile home park looks good.

Curt ... The PRR E-units in your photo are on the North-South tracks just south of Chicago Union Station. I could see many PRR passenger train in my youth. I would ride the Burlington suburban trains into Chicago. PRR, CB&Q, GM&O, and MILW shared Union Station.

Here is a link to a nice photo of tracks south of Chicago Union Station. Due to Copyrights, I will not copy and post it.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=337304&nseq=19

EVERYBODY ... This is a great picture!

There are 10 E-units in the picture.

Left to right..... CB&Q inbound commuter train with two E8's (unusual. Normally a single E-unit for suburban trains)

CB&Q outbound train with 3 E7's. Appears to be California Zephyr. One unit had painted sides. the other two had stainless steel sides.

Distant headlight may be a switcher.

Rear of inbound train. Perhaps GM&O.

Outbound train with 2 E7's. Looks like ACL power. This may be run-through locomotives, and the train may be the South WInd from CHicago to Florida via PRR-L&N-ACL.

3 PRR E-units.

The street bridges south of Union Station were one of the best places anywhere to watch trains especially if you like E-units.

Ulrich- Sorry to hear of the setback. I am glad it's taken care of and she is doing better. Prayers continue my friend.

Jeff- Funny you should ask. Signed in to get the address and I am just ready to walk out the door with it now. The Pony Express should be blasting out of town this evening a little after 5pm.

If anyone happens to be in Williamsville when the contract mail truck enters and leaves town, please pull off the side of the road and take cover. I do not call it the Pony Express for no reason. It's a gear grinding truck tilting and if it could, a tire smoking experience.

 And speaking if Jeff,

Curt- I whole heartedly agree with what Jeff said. Post away, you will get no negative comments here about the completeness (or lack of), or the quality of photo. No one expects you to be a photographer or have the best quality camera for those show quality pictures, nor to be able to just have the best layout they have ever seen. Let alone get it done over night. Jeff doesn't know this but, believe it or not, he was one of the reasons I decided to even get on this forum and then had the nerve to post a picture to begin with. Well, that and the feeling these guys wouldn't rip me a new one because I wasn't all that good. I peeked in windows and there he was  posting pictures of his layout regardless of the condition of the scene. Like he said, white, plywood, various colors of foam and I recall this one shot he posted that had the controls, a section of torn up and under construction area and tools and supplies laying all over. Messy? You bet. Looked just like mine. (except for the differences of course) THAT's when I said I'm NOT alone among this crowd and stepped in and said howdy. Soon after I posted a picture of who knows what and it's been all gravy since. So, post away, ask what peoples opinions are and that's what you'll get. Opinions of what they see and ideas of what they would do. But we will not give directions as to what you should do. Unless of course it's something like "when soldering under the layout make sure no part of your body is under the item you are soldering. But, if you don't care if your clothes get holes, and don't mind screaming like a girl right before you bash your head on something trying to get out from under the layout as fast as you can while trying to wield a hot soldering iron without touching anything especially yourself, feel free to do so." Whistling

Best get moving before I goof around and miss the Pony Express.

Jeff - I always love to see pictures of those little scenes on your layout. They are a great inspiration for me - and also a push in the back to work on my own layout, once I am back.

Thanks Ulrich. It's nice to know my humble efforts can inspire someone.

Good Afternoon Folks,

I have not been able to visit the Diner the last few days. My Mom´s condition turned worse and she needed to undergo an emergency surgery to save her life. We had a pretty tough time, but now she´s back "on track".

I will have to stay quite a few more days with my father. I sometimes remember that I have a brother, but he prefers to go to Spain on a holiday instead of taking care for his dad - sorry for having to say, this but he is an arrogant PITA.

Why do I feel so tired?

Folks, I have seen some pretty pictures in here.

Jeff - I always love to see pictures of those little scenes on your layout. They are a great inspiration for me - and also a push in the back to work on my own layout, once I am back.

Curt - those PRR pictures are just great - you must have an awesome collection! PRR steamers are still my favourite (if I could ever afford to buy one, in HO scale).

Todd - happens to me all the time! There are times when I spend hours looking for something which is right before my eyes Laugh It´s the age, not the mileage!

Ray - Ta´Keisha must be an extraordinary young lady, of which you don´t see many nowadays. Aren´t you proud of having contributed to turning her into the person she is?

Simon - Welcome Those Brits built impressive steamers. I like their sleek look, which is so different from the looks of German steamers, with all their pipes and valves adorning the boiler. Keep those pics coming...

Garry - now that´s an awesome picture of an E 5! Actually, one of my favourite Diesels! I am not so fond of the GP´s and SD´s with their utilitarian look...

Rob - Thumbs Up for the progress on clearing up the damage.

Well, supper time is coming up and I need to prepare some food for my hungry (and a little grouchy) dad. I hope y´ all are having a good one.

Blessings!

Mornin' everyone!

Oooooo!  Look!  The buffet is up this morning....  Zoe I'll have THAT and a cup of dark roast in a R&GV RR mug.  Thank you. Ma'am.

Jim and Curt, thanks for the words...  If people look behind the headlines, there are still a lot of great kids out there.  What I find very satisfying is when I see young people who are on their way to college who are the first ever in their families to be able to go.  At least four of the six scholarships we gave out last night are in THAT category.  One of girls grew up in the Big Apple.  Parents mostly non-existent in her life (at least in any positive way).  Others in the family intervened and got her moved here to live with her Grandmother for most of high school.  Her grandmother stood with her last night when she got the award with tears streaming down her face!  The one young man in the group is the son of one of my students when I first moved to Geneva to teach.  He was a very rough and tough kid, but basically a good kid.  The son by his freshman year in high school was hanging with the "wrong crowd".  A coach for one of his summer sports was able to get him moved to a Parochial School for his Junior and Senior years.  The kid started to take school seriously (he also started to see opportunities he hadn't noticed before)  and will be going to college for Sports Medicine.  His dad seemed delighted to see me last night and was very, very proud of his son!  Yes, it was a wonderful, wonderful night!  Sometimes people just need a little shove in the right directions!

Jim, sounds like some good things happening where you are!

Today will be catch up on all the w*rk not done in the last couple weeks.......  Lawn is about 6" high at the moment.  I'll lift up the deck an inch or so and have a go at it in a while (If the liquid sunshine holds off).  Have a letter to write verifying service time for one of my NMRA members for his "Volunteer AP Certificate".  R&GV RR meeting tonight....

Catch you all leter!

Curt Webb

Jeff- Great pic. Seeing  pic's from everybody keeps me from posting from my layout as the only scenery at this point is buildings and probably will be for awhile.

Don't let that stop you. Having a little bit to work with is nothing to be ashamed of. I was posting photos of my layout when most of what I had was some structures and a lot of bare foam and snow white plaster. And it was like that for a while as I'm in bad shape healthwise and financially. Do the best you can with what you have and don't be too proud to accept handouts and aid from others. The only reason I've gotten as far as I have on my scenery is because of the generosity of others who were willing to give. It would have taken me quite a bit of time and money to get everything together and on less than $700 a month money is in short supply. Time I have plenty of. I used to go to the nearest LHS which is in Alexandria. That's a 120 mile round trip and with gas prices being so high going there is out of the question. So I do my hobby shopping online now. So as I said before, there's nothing wrong with showing what you've accomplished so far even if it's just some track, a few structures and a lot of bare plywood or foam.

Morning All,

Flo I would love about 5 cups of coffee please.

Supposed to get up to 89 F today. At w**k today again but at least it is OT. Hopefully it won't be like yesterday. After today the temp is back to the 90's again probably until after summer is over.

Lee- Thanks, I appreciate it.

Jeff- Great pic. Seeing  pic's from everybody keeps me from posting from my layout as the only scenery at this point is buildings and probably will be for awhile.

Rob- Sounds like you are making great progress.

Sorry that I am having a brain embolism and can't remember who did the awards dinner but it sounds like it was a wonderful evening. The young lady you were talking about gives me faith that hope is not lost for the next generation.

Everyone Take Care.

EDIT: As I clicked the post button, I happened to look down at my feet. There, resting not 6 inches from them is......the roll of packing tape I looked all over for yesterday. Guess I didn't look everywhere. How did I miss it thereTongue Tied? Oh, well guess I will keep looking for it in a few more places. Don't want it to be the last place I looked. I hate when THAT happens.

No matter what you're looking for it will usually be in the same place you left it, unless of course Murphy's buddies 'Not Me' and 'Nobody' made off with it.

Good morning. It's 68° and cloudy. High will be 85 and partly cloudy and more humid. A good day for staying inside.

Today I'll try to get some bushes in on the extension then it will be time to move over to the central area and east side of the layout. Today's work time will be cut short however as I have an appointment with the foot doc this afternoon. Hopefully I can continue working on the layout later.

Good Morning!! Coffee please. WOO HOO! First time up for IndyJim! C’mon guys let’s show him what kinda damage we can do to that virtual wallet!

Partly sunny, with a high near 73.

No MRRing yesterday sad to say. I got involved in numerous small projects that I should have been doing anyway.

ONE of which, was looking for packing tape. I know we have a roll of the worthless except for that stuff around here some place. I’ve seen it just not too long ago. But where? I suppose I oughta just ask at the Post Office if I can use theirs. Might not let me. Never know, they may have a rule the GP can’t use supplies for fear of International contamination. Williamsville has been known as a hot spot for T****rism eminating from this Township. I think I read that somewhere. Hmm Maybe not.

Aaaanywho, I would like to get into the Choo Choo room some today. Though it is a great day out there, what I need to do is scan some of Mom’s ancient pictures into the computer so’s I can put them on disc. My Aunt called and wants us to come to Nebo for dinner Sunday so I should scan the ones I want in case she wants, and I’m sure she will, some of the same pics. I’ve been waiting for a useless outside day to do this but it hasn’t came without something else needing done so I’ll just have to do it now.

Simon- Great photo and thanks for the links.

You know, all these pictures of E units has rekindled my flame for the good old days. I may start thinking of changing eras back again. That would sure solve my problem with roof walks. Or, I can do what I probably will do, run whatever I like when I want to. What’re they gonna do, sue me?

I should work on that tractor. But I need to get some of those pictures on disc I’ve been getting round to for over 4 months. I also need to get the pressure washer running too. Maybe I’ll take a nap first and think about it.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Ray, thanks for sharing that story about Ta'Keisha. With the woes that have befallen some here in the Diner lately, that's a welcome heapin' helping of feel-good. Makes jaded middle-agers like myself think that maybe there is some hope for the next generation after all.

Found out yesterday that my daughter will be receiving the eighth grade science award at her school. This engineer daddy is so proud.

My son's school got a visit from Peyton Manning, which is pretty cool since it's one of the smallest high schools in the city (maybe the smallest). According to my son, you wouldn't guess he's a professional football player just by looking at him; in fact he said he really looks kind of dorky. My son also described him as a great speaker - intelligent, funny, and completely engaging.

Actually got some basement time in last night. Decaled one side of a boxcar. whoopee. I guess a little therapy is better than none at all.

Edit: I see I'm at the top of the page for the first time. Belly up to the buffet, boys! The bacon's on me this morning!

Evenin'!

Decaf Flo, just a decaf for me.

I am exhausted, but have a great feeling of a day well done and successful.  Scholarship dinner went very well and quite smoothly.  Really nice to be able to hold it in the new banquet room at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.  The high point of the evening was the speaker of the evening.

This young lady was a 2008 graduate of Geneva High School and was a Martin Luther King Scholarship winner. At Geneva High School she was president of her graduating class, an active member of the chorus, marching band, cheerleading squad, track and field team, and very active in her church.  She entered Virginia State University, class of 2012.  She is currently Vice President of the Virginia State Gospel Chorale, the first student from the VSU School of Business to be named a National Association of Black Accountants Scholar.  She had a summer internship last year in the Corporate Tax Division of Tredegar Corp. in Richmond Virginia.  This summer she will be interning in the Financial Dept. at Abbott Laboratories in Chicago.  She was elected Miss Sophomore VSU, Miss Junior VSU, and last March was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Honor Society.  Last Month she became a lady of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and was elected Miss Virginia State University 2011.

She was also one of my students way back when (OK, she was just a second grader....  But I knew back then she was a very special young lady!)  Gentlemen meet Ta'Keisha!

First thing she did when she got up was sing for us....  I just melted!  What a voice!0  Then she gave a very inspiring speech about keeping your dreams alive and working toward your life goals.  She also talked about responsibility and caring for all people.

Yep!  Great evening here in the Finger Lakes....  I'm still smiling!Big Smile
