Ulrich, I’ll leave the light on for you, but you’ll have to sleep under the train layout…

Hey Lee,   Don't open the windows yet,   This morning it was - 27 C with a wind chill down to - 40C again.  My dogs really didn't want to go outside to do their business even after being in all night. Just too darn cold.

Birthday Boy Ken, Congratulations on adding another year to your Resume. Hope you get to celebrate a little  and not just work all day.

Prayers and blessings to the Moms out there  and hope the Sons can endure the stress that is involved with those situations.

On the MRR front, not much has happened since getting the four staging tracks down, ( I sure like them )  other than some repair work to some rolling stock. A few loose couplers and changed out some wheel sets.

Hope you are feeling better Jerry, so you can get the Illinois Southern perking again.  By the way, someone posted a picture of a scrap yard the other day and there was one of loco in a light blue color lettered up for your Road.

Hope you all have a good one today.  It looks like it is lunch time,  sorry Girls, I brought my own lunch so I will just sit outside on the bench and watch for the Local to come by.

Must get back to work now.       I'd rather be in the train room.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Ken: CakeHappy B-Day

Well, it's official. My ankle is fractured. I could have told them that without looking. Still the best that can be done is to bind it up and keep the boot on it as a walking cast. I have to be able to change the dressing on the wound on the side of the ankle after all and I can't do that if they slap something more permanent on it. So once again it's my problem to take care of.Those docs are all heart aren't they?

Good Afternoon Everyone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEN !!!

Well it has been a gray, cold, and gloomy day here in Western North Carolina, and that also just about sums up the mood I have been in all day too. To start I went through the replies to a question I had posted on the "layout building board" about grade percentages have been a little discouraging and now I need to completly re do my track plan. Then being unhappy with this I went up to the studio and pulled out a box of train stuff, this box has been tossed around and moved from one side of the country to another and has not been opened in twenty years. Inside was several pieces of rolling stock and a couple of old inexpensive engines, one was a gift from the wife the first Christmas together, well they were not in great shape and there is some mildew issues from the eight years we spent in Florida, but in all I guess they realy are not in that bad of shape.

What hurt was that I just can not let go of this grade elevation problem, so I took an 8' 1" x 3" and laid it on my bench work, lifted one end 3 1/2" inches and then laid out acouple of pieces of flex track, a terminal track, found an old transformer and started putting out a few pieces of rolling stock. Then I stood back and realized that this short little six car train took up nearly half of my bench work in length, and all i could think was "We need a bigger boat". Well I am pretty sure the Wife is not about to let me have any more of her studio space than she already has so I am going to have to make do.

Now there was one bright spot to this little foray, I had that old mildewed engine that has not seen the light of day for 20 years and three rather long billboard boxcars and three cattle cars on this 8' grade that I am guessing was near 4% and it pulled it, after everyone on the message board said it was to steep. But I did realize how ridicules this looked and I still have to come up with a new track plan.

Anyways that has been the type of day I have had today. I will say that I was glad to hear that the MOTHERS are feeling a little better and some relief is to be had there. Now Flo I need some comfort food how about some of that Apple pie and a thick chocolat shake please.

Oh I have some interesting news about the Smoky Mountain Railway to share but I will save that for later.

Until Then I will be in the window booth, dreaming of bigger things.

Ron

I refuse to grow up!!!

Hey guys

I went and got gas today even though I was only at half (usually at 1/4). 3.54 for premium, with the stuff going on in the middle east, I decided to buy early before the price goes higher. At least with some of the changes to the car, I managed to squeeze out 18.7 mpg.

Work has been hectic the last few days. Looks like the moment the snow storms went away, everyone and there mothers came down to florida. Guess spring break has started.

Urethane bushings for the hydro-bushing arms showed up today and I tried to get them in. No-go. they are just a hair to big. Guess they have to be pressed in.

Ken, Happy B-day.Happy B-Day

I've gotta stop by more often so I don't get left behind.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Gas prices are one thing I'm constantly bugged by. I've worked to get my van as fuel efficient as a three quarter ton truck could be and what is a van but a truck frame with a box on it. Any emission control system that was on it has disappeared over the thirty years since the van was built. I have the carb leaned back to reduce fuel consumption and increased the mpg to between fifteen and eighteen miles per gallon. The carb isn't the original type that came on the vehicle but is instead a Chrysler non-electronic universal replacement that was made to fit a range of vehicles. Trying to find one just like the original was like hunting for hens teeth. Every place I went to or ordered from said they had it but when I clapped eyes on what they had it was always the later model with electronic feedback.

 Evening Folks!

Flo, just a pitcher of Beer for now.

Thank You All For The Birthday Wishes! I feel closer to some of you than I do the folks that live by me.

Far as Birthdays goes, well I am alive and that about all I can say about it. Cold, rainy nasty day here in Maryville. Plus, who want to go see a Lawyer on there Birthday anyway? Left the house at 10:15 AM and did not get back till 4:30 PM, that is a lot of running around.

Meeting with the Lawyer. Pretty much told me what I all ready knew, but all so gave me a few ideas. Main thing that made Sue and I feel better is he said we would not have to move until Stupid Bank Of America has sold the house. If or when they foreclose I don't have to move in 30 to 60 days like we thought.

He all so said it normally takes the bank 7 to 9 months for them find a buyer after they foreclose. I can stop the fore-closer anytime before they find a seller if I file a chapter 13.

If I go chapter 13 his ruff guess is my payment would be $1350.00. That includes his fee's, the past due amount I owe on the house and the current house payment amount. At this point I could not swing $1350.00 a month with my base pay of $2,000.00 before I start seeing commission. Commission is the wild card, no way to know what I will make in a year. If it keeps going like it is at work I should be fine.

Bottom line is I have sometime and if I go Chapter 13. And if I can not swing the $1350.00 a month  I can still go chapter 7 and walk away from the house and the Attorney fee's form the chapter 13.

I all so have some leverage now with Bank of Stupid! Now when I call them I know they cannot take the house in 30 days and hope to get them Modified The Loan. Either they work with me, or I will stop paying and file chapter 13.

Does the US Post Offices X Ray all packages? If so Jeffery and I may be getting a visit from the DEA. Big Smile Jeffery, your package is on its way. I sent a full container of the ground foam you needed, little over half container of ballast, some bushes, small box box of trees and a baggie of Dead Wood Ground Cover. It sure looks like a cheap bag of POT with steams I had taken off more the one kid I had arrested.

See you all later and again Thank You for all the Birthday wishes.

Jeffery, did your van come with AC? I will have to dig out my Mopar Bible to make sure, but if it was a none AC van, a AC water Pump has smaller vain and will give you 5 free HP and increase your MPG. It does on my Big Blocks. Electronic ignition may help. Or added loser weights to your distributor so you have more advances. If you could find used a MSD 6 AL box, that would help a lot. Plugs will fire 6 times per power stroke. If you have a friend that has a exhaust shop, dual exhaust with a X pipe would help as well. Mobile One oil and slick 50 might help as well, it did for me.

Before I went all nutty with my 69 Charger I had it up to 17.5 MPG with the tired 440.

Sawyer What gears does you Horse Meat Have in it? My 4.6 liter Town Car get's 23.00 MPG in town if I really watch it.

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll please, with a slice of butter on top (of the roll, that is). Thanks! Dinner (and Yum!)

The weather here today is just 'ducky' (if you're a duck and would like it, that is). Supposed to get 2-4" around our neck o' the woods, and I'm betting around Garry's house they'll get more (they have flash flood watches for some Kentucky counties, I noticed, but I forgot which county his place is in). Lots of Storm, for sure!

Rob, sounds like you really had an episode of the "Call of the Wild" (any Jack London fans out here?), so to speak. I hope you were not far from a fence or tree to hop behind when you were 'persuading' that bull. Surprise Soprano cats, did I hear Ray say? Smile, Wink & Grin

JR, I'm sure it feels good to have even that 'little' patch of layout started, after all the time you've had living elsewhere, then waiting on the house to get (re-)done so you could move back in, etc. Thumbs Up May your progress keep on rollin'!

Todd, that sounds good from what the attorney filled Brenda in about the bank fiasco. I'd about bet that the attorney has things more right than the bank would like! Laugh I think I got some of that same sinus stuff you mentioned; had a slight (sinus?) headache this morning, so I took a naproxen (aka that Aleve stuff) - and I rarely take anything other than plain ol' aspirin. Hoping this wet front that's moving through today will humidize it out soon.

CudaKen,  Yeah, Missouri does the same about drivers' licenses. Makes it easier to remember when they're coming up to renew. Unlike the time a coupla decades ago when I was using my license for a check at Wally's place, and the sales gal said "Do you know that your license has expired?" Luckily at that time, my wife was with me, so she drove home. Needless to say, I did NOT allow that experience a chance to be repeated again. Oh, and Happy B-Day!Wink

Jeff - that sounds good that the meds are clearing things up for your Mom. May she continue to improve (as well as your foot and the rest of ya)! (Glad to hear you got to the doctor's, too, Thumbs Up even if he/she/they weren't a lot of help in treating your foot). Thumbs Down Remember to not overdo it, okay? That plan for yesterday sounded really good. Thumbs Up [;-)]

Ulrich, good to hear your Mom's strengthening some (even if it's in preparation for surgery). Continuing to keep her in AngelAngel. Hang onto those dreams - we'd love to have you and Petra on this side of 'the pond' (much simpler to arrange for some of us to meet you that way). Wink

Robby, that's a unique lawn ornament your buddy has there. Whistling Yeah, I remember 'THAT' look... Sorry to read of the postponing of your school l'arnin' (but keep those plans in mind once you get those glitches out of the way). Thumbs Up

Barry, some nice photos you've posted (and I like it that none I've seen lately have that white stuff on the ground. Yeah(Even if you have been getting more than your share of the stuff this year!)

Ron, on your 'space vs. layout' dilemma, you may need to learn to appreciate some peddler freights (shorter ones, that is)... Good to hear your loco was pulling the cars up that grade okay. Maybe you can cover/obscure some of it with cuts in the scenery hiding part of the grade. I expect that I'll be dealing with some of that (see comments about my possible duo-deck layout below)

Question - I've been wondering about going with a dual-deck design for my future 'spare room' idea for the layout. I figured I'd ask some of our designing Diners' ideas/comments on that. Here's a mostly stripped down plan as I have it:

What I'm wondering about is, if at spot 1 (upper left) the mainline goes down to staging tracks under the lower middle area, goes across where the swing gate (aka bridge) in the lower-right area is (probably need to make it a two-level gate, actually), under the Sawmill area and back around under Cortez (top middle), then coming back up someplace near #2 (mid-lower left) to Many Farms. I haven't a clue about the mainline run and what percentage grade that would wind up being, so obviously I can use some suggestions here. Diners?

I decided not to start a rant about oil futures traders and their impact (as the nervous Nellies that they seem to be) on what we have to pay for our gas. Hey, soapbox, back in your corner now!Grumpy

Talked with Randy at Downtown Deco yesterday afternoon, and he said he's sent me some stuff that was missing from the Coin Laundry kit I'd bought on the 'Bay (door frame, signs, etc.). I figure I can use some sheet styrene and make a ceiling easy enough, so I'm not worried about that. I can get a sheet of acetate easy enough for the windows (and they're small enough THAT I can probably have some left over from another structure kit big enough to match).

Was disappointed the other day at Hobby Lobby to find that they didn't appear to have the Alumilite resin casting kits in stock. Wasn't sure if they were just temporarily out, or planning to not have the starter kits, since they did have individual stuff in stock (release agent, mold chemicals, etc.). Asked at the checkout as I was buying the Alumilite DVD/video, but the person who knew was gone to lunch. I'll call tomorrow and see if she's back (and also if she knows if they'll be re-stocking).

MRR order through the LHS down the road is in, though the Walthers junk yard 'piles' are on back-order and the Grand Central Gems lodgepole pines were out (hopefully they'll back order those for me, too, as they were on sale). But the total order $ was about half what I orderd, which was easier on the wallet.

Time for me to get on home and see what MRR-related stuff I can start/get back to. I started on TurboTax yesterday, and might see about getting more done on that, too. Prayers for healing of the mothers and the Diners in need of healing (with or without the doctors' 'help'), and for good night's sleeps and bulls that stay at home...

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

***Jim, I like those layout plans. Plenty of train action to do on it.Thumbs Up

It originally came with AC but it was removed many years ago, maybe ten or more years by the amount of rust on the bracket. If you can give me a number or marking to look for I can see if it has the water pump you referred to. As far as I'm concerned the ignition system is working fine and I'm not going to mess with it unless I have to. It fires up within four cranks the first time of the day, the first crank for the rest of the day. If it ain't broke don't fix it.Smile

Evening all.

"HA-choo!" Uck... Yes, I'm sick. Sorry... Skipped school today...

Sorry I haven't been in lately. I don't even know why, but I've been really busy. I feel like the five day weekend was shorter than a regular weekend, even though I didn't do all that much...

I have no clue what's going on around here.
Doesn't seem like a lot, though. What, did someone say that it's Kevin's birthday? Who's Kevin? Ohhhh, Ken... Right... I think my ears are kinda stuffed up...

Happy B-Day Ken!!

Well, I better get out of here before I "Cough, cough!" Ick, sorry again... before I get all you sick.

I'll see you guys later *sniffle, cough, sneeze, repeat*...

Evening everyone, if anyone remembers me.  It's been over a year since I stopped by the coffee shop a little after I retired.

A quick catch up: enjoying being retired, met Bob (Duke or bdukert) for those who know him here a few times.  We went to the Railroad Museum of PA, Strasburg Railroad, Steamtown, and the East Broad Top.  Had a great time with all.  No progress on the MR front, too many other things going on.

Some of you may remember I got married about two years ago.  Well, I'm getting a divorce.  Found out she was have s*x with other men barely a year after the wedding.  Won't tolerate that.

Took a part time job to get out of the house a little, was getting cabin fever after retiring.  Have also done some remodking on the house.

Hey folks

Had to help my sister last night with Biology. Something I can do.

Ken-Happy Birthday.

Urlich- I'd help you out, but I can't

Jeff-Best of luck. Hope your ankle gets better.

Gas prices- Oh boy do I have something to say about that. A little number for you folks, Libian oil only supplies 2 percent of the world oil and it doesn't go to the US. It goes to the UK. Correct me if I', wrong but when the economy took a dump last time, wasn't the oil companies recording record profits? Angry If you ask me, they are going to ruin this economy again with high fuel prices. I spend 30-40 dollars a week in fuel and I only drive to school, home and occasionally to take my sisters to dance. Now I have to pay for my own gas. And my Jeep only gets 13+/- to the gallon. Funds are strapped to buy a car with better mileage and I am NOT buying a tiny little smart car. Living out in the country means that my vehicle has to have some 'meat' to it. Meaning some weight and maybe a FRAME would be nice. My question is, do these oil company brass have to think or buy glass stomachs for themselves?

SoapBox

Aw crud. How'd I get up here? Better get down before Flo and Vinnie get over here. Dead

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening,

ATTABOY: Welcome back Sir! Sorry to hear of your domestic....situation... I wouldn't put up with THAT either.

CUDAKEN: Happy Birthday to you! Have a few Beer on me and Rerun!

TEEN STEAM FAN: Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, the oil situation isn't quite THAT simple. Keep in mind there is a ban on Gulf shore drilling now, many areas availible for oil drilling are off-limits, and this country hasn't built an oil refinery in over 30 years. All THAT adds up to the least little ripple in the oil market (real or imagined) sets off a fire storm in the world of the Oil SPECULATORS, the guys who buy/sell the stuff and pretty much set the price for the rest of us. I'm not saying the oil companies are saints, but how much "profit" is "too much?" Who decides THAT?  If you think these prices are bad...hang onto your hat Son...you ain't seen NUTHIN' yet! Remember, POTUS is OK with $5.00/gallon gasoline. His Dept. of Energy head thinks we should be paying $10/gallon like they do in Europe.

What? Soapbox? Nope...don't need it. Said all I'm a-gonna say about THAT! Apologies if necessary for ruffling feathers or creating a stir.

I just hope I didn't touch-off a fire storm in here...NOT my intention.

I was going to just comment on how cool a creation iTunes can be. In the "iTunes DJ" mode, the program plays a random assortment out of the collection. By sheer luck or coincidence, it paired-up Ted Nugent's version of the National Anthem with "America the Beautiful" by Ray Charles. Thumbs UpThumbs Up As Jackie Gleason used to say: "How sweet it is!"

ULRICH: Sorry to hear of the latest setback. Of course you're welcome in the Umscheid house...but you'd be taking up quarters with Cloe the Evil Step-Cat from Hell. I've been hoping the Wife would get rid of the wretched thing...no such luck. The cat is so evil, it stays in it's own room 100% of the time. Now, if I could actually get rid of the durnned thing (the cat, not the Wife!) then we could air-out the room, and make it habitable for you and Petra.  Seriously though, I do hope you can find a way to escape, and a path to a new life for the both of you. I'm not sure our side of the pond is the place to be anymore...

Thoughts and prayers for those in need...too many to list, you know who you are, know that we're thinking about you.

Chris

Hey Guys,

Well I am in a lot better mood than I was earlier, have some new ideas for my track plan and cleaned up all that rolling stock that had the mildew issues. Hey Flo, coffee please in a "War Bonnet" cup please.

When I was in earlier I mentioned that I had some interesting news about The Great Smokey Mountain Railway, and I just wanted to share this with all you railfans.

Went to the county commission meeting last night and the owner of the GSMR was there and he was asking for a grant to move the new steam set and coaches that he recently purchased, from Maine to Dillsboro NC. He went on and revealed that the new train will be themed and that due to a confidentiality clause in the contract, that he could not say what the theme was but that it involves a British auther and a wizard. So it looks like we will have the Hogwarts train., but that is not the interesting part.

He also asked the commissioners for a $250,000 loan to build a turn table in Dillsboro NC, now this was the part that interested me the most. The meeting went into closed session and they tabled the discussion until the next meeting, but the last thing that the chairman said was that he was looking forward to doing business with the railway. This will be a great boost to the economy in the area if it is promoted right and I will be photographing the whole project so that I may model it later.

Thats all that I wanted to share this evening, going back to the kitchen table now to work on those track plans.

Good Night All

Ron

Slice of pumpkin pie, please.

***Ron, that's interesting news. I'd rather see another "theme" than that one, but understand why it might be a good financial choice.

Been watching a show of the rift valley and discovered another mineral to add to my (N) volcano mining operation; "salt". And after looking a bit further, volcanoes directly or indirectly produce or host deposits of aluminum, diamonds, gold, nickel, lead, zinc, and copper. So, along with the direct collecting of sulphur & salt, most loads will be from a big dig and can be transported by rail to a separation facility.

Thunderstorms coming in the early morning hours here, some may be severe. YeeHaw!

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

AttaBoy, welcome back, long time no see!  Sorry to hear about the wedding woes.

Johnboy, the windows remain closed for now, we have a winter storm coming in tonight. I’m guessing it won’t be until April before I can open any windows.

Ron, 1” rise in 100” run = 1% grade.  4” rise in 94” (8’) = a little sharper than 4%.  You may need to curve the run to keep it under 2% or add several locomotives on the head end.

Jeff, my son got the box I mailed him today, keep an eye on your porch your box should arrive tomorrow.

Looks like the storm is tracking a little too far north tonight for heavy snow, looks like maybe freezing rain all night.

Diesel is $3.59/gallon here.

Good late evening diners!!...Getting ready for another snow storm Ashamed. This stuff will be the heavy wet mushy stuff. We are well north of the moisture line so we will be getting all snow...anywhere from 7 to 10 inches of the stuff. I went ahead and sprayed the inside of the snow blower and shoot with silicone spray so it doesn't get clogged up. It's like snow blowing wet sugar. My daughter has a few of her friends sleeping over so I am sure to have a bunch of wet sledders tomorrow afternoon!! Didn't feel like doing any layout work so I took my 20th Century Limited set and ran some laps around the layout. Been thinking about modeling some track pans on a few of the longer runs of the layout as the NYC used them on the Water level Route. The Hudsons could scoop up water out of these shallow pans at pretty much full speed and not have to stop for water. Pretty slick engineering if you ask me!! Since I am off tomorrow and will be pretty much snowed in I can get several hours of layout time. I have several dozen Super trees that need planting on a mountainside I have been working on. I have also boxed up some motive power and several pieces of rolling stock for our club show this Sunday. We get a pretty decent crowd and the costs offset our expenses for the year. Everyone have a good evening...or early morning as it is. Stay safe!!...Tim

Good morning dinners.

Just a quick stop before I go off to work.

Found out yesterday some very crucial to swapping out the bushings on the other control arm I have. Apparently I had to take the "collar" of the hydro bushing out in addition to the rubber bushing. Luckily this was pretty easy since it only had to be pried out with a large screwdriver. Although when they came out, I ran off. The reason being it STANK like a skunk died in it. When I get back, I'm gonna clean out the holes and start switching out the front control arms, springs, shocks, tie rod ends, and do some brake work.

Jeff, I managed to squeeze mine out my increasing the spark tables in the ECM (computer control stuff for my EFI). That gave me about a 2 mpg increase and a noticable increase in power. The chip top do the tuning (I can tune it myself) cost me about $70, so it should pay for itself soon.

Ken, Were you talking to me or Sawyer? I have dual exhaust with a prochamber and no catalytic converters. I don't know if it helped any since I never drove the car around before I had the exhaust work on it (it was cut-off after the cats when I bought it). I'm managing 18.7 mpg with the stock 2.73 gears. I'm going to be replacing those soon with a set of 3.55s. I've read that the 3.73 was actually the most fuel efficient under mustangs, but it didn't pass EPA stuff with it (huh?) We'll have to see if it helps or hurts

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
