Ulrich,

Sorry to hear the news. Sounds like your politicos are behaving like ours. It's easier to cut discretionary funding for worthwhile public projects like the TV station than it is to tackle the underlying causes of the budget crises. Hopefully if all projects are to be cut back like that, a public outcry will follow and funds will be restored. There are some things government is better able to do and non-commercial broadcasting here and abroad is one of them so long as the stations are truely independent. Let's hope you come out ok in the end.  J.R.

J.R. - I wish  I could say something positive about the situation, but it would take more than a miracle to sort out THAT mess.  Frankly, I don´t know what to do to improve Petra´s and my situation. We can´t go on like this much longer.

I know that Crying does not help, but I now I wish I could do it.

It appears that this is the end of my hopes and dreams.

 Just a quick stop.

Ulrich......I hope it all works out.   Its still bad here, and I laugh when the news says the economy is improving.

I've been working on a few cars this weekend, and here's the latest edition.  Just a double stack.   The trailers aren't very bad "weather" wise, and I gave the carrier a good dusting.

Afternoon all

Ken

On L Girder bench work. The layout building books I've read say that the vertical rib of the "L" stops the flat one on top from sagging....and yes, putting in risers is a sinch because there are all kinds of places on the vertical ribs to attach them.
What Der said as well as you can put the girders at any angle and any distance apart from each other.

Ray and Garry

You are awake!  Something wrong?
Time to fire up your Berkshire!
Nothing wrong Ray, but Garry kind of read my mind.  With Christmas coming and the movie Polar Express,I thought I would get a good bed of coals in the firebox, full tender of water, and a full bunker of coal so that the Berk would be ready to pull the Diner to our next stop.  After all,the loco in the movie is a Berk.YeahThumbs UpThumbs Up

enjoy your dinner (after the log sawing - hey, ask Duke for some tips on the best way to do that...

Afternoon all! Just stopping in, I think I'll take the George Washington out for a spin tonight. Hopefully I can keep that cranky engine going long enough, I've got an infrequent bind soemwhere in her. And others seem to have pro blems keeping my coaches coupled, but they used to like me. And If I'm LUCKY, I can keep the Obs' radio antennae down. But I won't hold my breath on that one.

Ken: For the life of me, I cannot recall how to turn off that salmon background. but I have been looking in on it.  If you've foufd the off switch, or Ulrich or anyone else who uses RTS, please remind me.

Amana?: The CNW comment: Yeah, there was a bit of that when I chased the 4449 with Dad. Thoiugh actually, we left the driving line alone and stopped in  a Hobby Shop for a few minutes, and when we caught her again 20 minutes later after cutting to a small town via the interstate, there was NO ONE chasing her. People must have gotten discouraged by the front and/or they got what shots they wanted. We were the only people by the tracks who didn't live in or near that little town. (Have to look and see which one, little dot east of Michigan City).

Incidentally, that awas my one favorite thing about Twitter. They tweeted the twon they were just through, and I could pinpoint them on a map. (Well, the GPS software, but I didn't have internet to use their GPS)

I see someone is thrilled about the Nascar finish, I've stopped paying attention. Johnson? Meh.

On rolling carts: I had had a similar thought onece too, building a track for them so they wouldn't wander on me, but glad to see someone else tried and likes it.

Benchwork: The moduels NWR uses and I'm using are 2'x4' frames with 1/2 inch Ply and 1x4s for everything else. some of them have a crosspiece  in the center (also 1x4), and there's one 5" from the short end. The legs (1x4s screwed together in an L shape)  fit snug into there and are then screwed in for added support. We use simple hardware clamps (the squeeze tightner kind) to hold them togehter, a few early ones use screws and pegs, but the pegs just aren't worht the trouble.

Hey guys

Got to go get my brothers rental car in a bit. The insurance of the lady who backed into him is paying for it. I found it funny how they said he was 15% at fault for not honking. She had allstate and my bro has USAA.

Lee, The 302 from a truck wouldn't work for the underdrive pulleys I have. I wasn't really looking for the block as much as the heads. Some of the 302 Explorers have the same heads as a Mustang Cobra with a 302. I'm probably gonna yank the mark 7 engine since it'll have a better cam than what I have now.

Chris, nice picture. When I was in Texas I saw a CNW D9, but the UP paint crews got a hold of it (patch) I have a pic of it someplace.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening guys.

Busy day with odds and ends and took a new battery drill to my father for his B-day. He was thrilled. He dropped his old one and had it zip-stripped together and the battery was wearing out on it. He couldn;t make up his mind about getting a new one when we went to Scranton to Harbor Freight Tools on Sat...so I made up his mind for him!

Speaking of Scranton.

GMTRacing

Galaxy - you must have been on 81 south, no?  For some reason people drive like loons on the streach from Bingo to Scranton and it's too twisty and hilly for that nonsense.

Yep that be it. 81 south of Scranton down near teh Harrisburg area is even hillier and uppy-downy and twisty than the bingo-scranton stretch. It rides along a choppy ridge. And yep even B-S route is too much for high speed. Thank Goodness it was a dry day.

der5997

Galaxy: My apologies for the crazy driving snowbirds - just anxious to flee the coming cold I suppose - still no excuse for bone-headed driving. You didn't happen to notice the Province of the cars in question? I have a private hunch that they were from a large Province tot  he north and east of Nova Scotia.Hmm

Yep. Noted teh plates. Ontario and Quebec were the noted  plates of the Canadians who flew past us at about 90 MPH and cut in and out of {mild} traffic like they were in the city.

We expect it out of New Jersey plated vehicles, they are horrible drivers up here. {sorry New Jerseyites or New Jerseyans or people from NJ but its true}.

AS I said out here in the countryfied areas, we'uns don't cotton to much to cityfied driving. They's not IN the city no more. And hittin' a heiffer in the middle of the road...well lets jest say...'snot purdy!

Well, tired tonigt also did a lot of chores today.  We's goin' Turkey buyin' in the mornin'.

So early to bed tonight!

have a great night

I see some good work.

Jerry .. I like the Transfer caboose a lot. Jeff the weathered DRGW box car looks great. Robby, I like your intermodal equipment.

Duke... WOW 2 days in a row! Keep it up!

Ulrich .. That's sad news. I keep hearing things are rough in Europe. Not good here in the USA either. We're here to encourage you, so keep on trying.

I'll finally show photos of my bakery. It is a "bread factory". It is mostly made from Walthers modular parts. I designed the buildings myself.

Good Evening (?)

Not even 1 am as I start to write this and both Petra and I are up. We can´t find the sleep we need -  no wonder, as all our hopes and dreams went up in smoke. This just ain´t fair!

Janie, a midnight special Drinks for me please. Is Vinnie around, I´d like to talk to him about a job for Petra.

Galaxy - Canadian snowbirds zooming past you, doing 90 mph and whisking in and out of lanes? Try the German Autobahn - we have no general speed limit Whistling

Morgan - RTS has a button called "Special". Click on it and select "Create benchwork". A new windows opens, and there is a button "colour" - click on it and you can change the color.

Well, off to bed I am, trying to find some sleep -

Ulrich...my other half is the better driver of us, even though I used to race when I was younger and tend to have a very heavy lead foot myself.. My MIL is, indeed, German, and my other half spent every other summer over there in Germany untill the GIL {grandmother in law} died in 1992, and so has driven the autobahn.

Here, as I say in these here countryfied parts of the NE USA we don't much cotton to that stuff {USA country style accent poked fun at and exploited}.

We were, already, how shall I say, breaking the law and speeding ourselves, so if they were passing us like we were standing still, they had to be up there on the speed, and this is NOT the autobahn. There are set speed limits which most people drive 5 mph over anyway-for which the cops CAN give you a ticket for doing. 81 souht in these parts is far from smooth and flat like the autobahn {At least the parts my other half drove while over there}. The speeding is Ok to some extent if all traffic is going that fast, but not on a country stretch of hilly, curvy hiway, and the cutting in and out within inches is not necessary as there is plenty of room to change lanes. Had it been wet there would have been accidents.

There is a saying"If you are late, you have a timing problem, not a speed issue, and better off late than DEAD".

You're not alone there. The speed limit on the highways here is 65. I can be going 72 (the max my old van will do uphill) and I'm still being passed by LFV's (Low Flying Vehicles) that are easily doing 80.

Hey all!  What up?

For those wondering......The boy is good.  We went and saw the doc today and he says that the staples can come out next week.  He can't put weight on that knee yet, but he's bending it all over the place.

Ulrich,  I used to be pretty handy with RTS, but it sounds like theres a few new changes.  I don't remember those buttons.  Guess maybe I should download the latest version and start playing.  I used to love track planning.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a decaf for me right now.

Just got home from a Boy Scout Troop meeting.  A couple boys  are finishing their Music MB and their counselor who started working on it with them is no longer registered to do the MB.  One of the Scouts did the last requirement he had to do for me tonight, but doesn't have a partial from the old counselor.  As soon as he shows me the signed partial, i can sign the blue card for him to get the Merit Badge.  Several other scouts appear to be interested in the MB so I went over their choices on requirements.  We'll see if they actually get started on it.

PC, great news on your son.  I hope he will be up and running around soon.  I'm keeping all of you in my prayers!

Been picking up and putting away most of the day.  Tomorrow starts the dusting and vacuuming, washing, and scrubbing........  I did manage to find the wood surface on the dinning room table.  Knew it was under there somewhere.  Packed up and sorted a year and a half of NMRA, Smithsonian, National Geographic, and Model Railroader Magazines most of which have never been read......  Now, where did I hide the furniture polish???

[edit]  Looks like late night snacks are on me, so order up!

OK, back to w**k!

Later!

Goodevening Diners, and thanks Ray, I'll have a green tea please!

Soapbox please Zoe,SoapBox and a JR Regular while I rant.!....Grandkids presented me with a defunct (they didn't know that, to be fair) MRC Tech2 Power Pack they got in a garage sale.  Only the Power Monitor lit feebly at full power. So, I figure it's maybe the transistor that's toasted.  Get inside (not super-easy thanks to the screw holes being  too narrow for the  handy-dandy driver set I have with the proper  head for their fancy screw headsBang Head.)  Have a look at the transistor,  not a case I've seen before. Trace out the wires from and to it, so that I can identify the collector, emitter and base.  Search the web under the code printed on it (D1230 6A3) "No results for your search" - like ANYWHERE!  email MRC  Support with the situation and symptoms; ask for their suggestions. Get a useful reply very quickly (no soapbox needed for THAT Thumbs Up) Search under the replacement # MRC gave. Bingo! Found it first time, and it has the correct case and specs. (still NSR)  Order one ($1.44) OK, now I need that soapbox again...SoapBox."Your order is below the $10 required to place an order, buy something else" Since I don't need to do that, I phone our local (Dartmouth) specialty electronics supplier (and, no, we don't have Radio Shack anymore, they went to Circuit City and almost complete electronic parts uselessness some years agoBang Head.)  They had none in stock - had 66 at their supplier and they would be $10.00!!!!  "How come I'm looking at $1.44 on a web site in the US?"  I give him the url and he looks too-  "That would be about $1.75 with the exchange" (A liberty since the exchange rate is $1.47 tops this morning!) "Then", he continues, there's the shipping - it would be about $13-15 by the time it came here."...."Our supplier in Montreal would have to get it in, ship it to us, and then you could come in and pick it up."....Long and frustrating conversation short, we settled on a compromise where he gets one from another supplier and mails it to me  - my cost $7.50. I'm not happy,Grumpy but I'm doing this so I can get a better DC supply for my test / running in track (see below) than the ancient Fleischmann Transformer 712 I have now.  OK, Zoe, you can put the soapbox away again - thanks.

Day's major accomplishment so far has been that the van now has its snow tires fitted. It was such a good looking afternoon that I decided to move that task up the week's schedule - and there were no hitches if you discount having to take a 2x2 (actually a piece of window frame left over from the reno 13 years ago) to the tire iron on the driver's side front to get the nuts to start loosening.  Great if one has a flat - going into the woods for a handy branch to knock sense into wheel nuts put on too tightly Angry  If I had a hydraulic jack, and a torque adjustable impact wrench it would have gone faster, but then, if I could afford those, I could afford to take the van to the shop and have them do it!  By the time I was done (tea time) the washing was beginning to freeze on the line, so that became Job 1!

Jerry:  I like the transfer caboose - those things look very different.  Do you remember Noah was doing one around the time life (girls?) took him from our list of regulars?

Ulrich:  I'm not giving up hope on the job thing for you - and certainly not giving up praying for you guys. No, it isn't fair - it's a crying shame - especially when our news is about how Consumer Confidence in Germany is on the rise!  "Standing on guard for thee"....Angel

Larry:

I did find out there isn't a thing on TV worth watching...What happen to TV? Everything is reality or boring.
...not any better here. Saturday is pretty much a waste-land for TV, unless you are sports oriented that is.Even the new version Sherlock from the UK that PBS has begun to show was pre-empted because of their incessant fund raisers.

Vincent:

John, why you gotta patch a BN loco on me?
.....but then it is N, so the pain is WAY less! Clown

Galaxy:

Yep. Noted teh plates. Ontario and Quebec were the noted  plates of the Canadians who flew past us at about 90 MPH and cut in and out of {mild} traffic like they were in the city.
...figures!  What we see along the shore in the summer (...and don't stop coming, we need your touristy dollars!) led me to think that would be the case.Whistling

Garry: Bread factory is looking great! Does it have a "Day old" outlet? Smile, Wink & Grin

PC: Good to hear your boy is coming along well.  Being able to flex the knee like that has to be a good sign, right?Angel

Before I weathered the GP& I removed the glazing and number boards, naturally. On coming to re-assemble, one number board was missing. Detailed search of every hiding place known to man....nada. Forensic audit of the vacuum cleaner's dust...nada. Third look at the floor of the train room...and there it is near the desk. Great relief, and here's everything put back together. It's on the test track - this shot shows a bit more of that. The GP38-2 in the background is on an unpowered section that I'll get power to via a kill switch.  The whole thing would fit right inside Galaxy's new Christmas display with room to spare. The track length is 87 inches on the main...that's 0.22 miles prototypically speaking.  The power can be switched between DC and DCC with an 1/8th inch phono plug.

Welp (young dog?) it's THAT time again, so I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers of course for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel..and Ulrich there is light at the end of this tunnel!

Mornin' ladies. Could you pin these up? Yep, it's more of Ken's Spaghetti Central plans. I know, sorry to be handing off mail like this, I'll talk to my Sups and see if I can't get an RPO brought out, I think there's a few in the Grounds that haven't been converted to crew cars. Nothing  for me, I;m on my way back out. Thank you kindly!

 Good rainy morning.

I don't know why but I've been in a bad mood lately.  Maybe its due to the MIL coming, sells on eBay, me turning older in a couple of days.......who knows.    I'm also thinking about taking down the whole layout.   Just start over again.   I have 12x15 feet of space and I don't feel its being used very good.     Plus I have the upper part of the layout not being used at all.    That is taking up space also.

Maybe today I can look up some track plans and see what I can come up with.  Other than that, that's my day.

Good Afternoon,

it is a gray day, dull, with lots of snow flurries and temps at 30 F - very early in the season.

Chloe, I´d like to have a mug of coffee and a slice of that apple pie, topped with some vanilla ice cream, please.

I am not in the mood for anything today. I completed my work this morning, knowing that it is in vain. Somehow I feel much older today - no dreams anymore.

Good Morning! Coffe to go please. Gonna try to get my stuff done prior to 10 am when the trucks come. Then I can finish, or rather do some odds and ends til noon giving me the first part of the aftrenoon to do some things around here before I go to w**k at 5 then, while at work, Brenda will bring Mom……here. Tonight as opposed to tomorrow. So I wanna get outta here by 7. 7:30. 8. 8:30.

Larry- I know what you’re saying about TV. Few and far between is there something to watch.

When I do get a chance to, I usually end up on either the History, Discovery, HGTV, or sometimes of a late evening TruTV. Occasionally SciFi has a good show or one goofy enough to be entertaining. Other than the occasional burp of a decent showelsewhere, the TV is usually just on for something for the dog to watch. She doesn’t seem to care what’s on either. She does seem to like the Forensic Files and The Investigators type shows on Tru TV

Ulrich- I don’t know what to sayAshamed. I’m sorry just seems so empty right now. Is the consulting job still going to continue? That is something. And NO! I have NOT given up, and you should not either. Giving up is not you.

I take it when Duke clicks the Post button his too seems to sit and take awhile. Prompting the reaction to wanna click post a second time.

Great work from all of you who posted pics. I love them. Thanks.

Der- I wasn’t suppose to have confidence in German craftsmanship? Why I always did think they were some of the best craftsmen in the world. Oh, I'm sorry. I hope that wasn’t ethnic stereotyping. Wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

Robby- Had the same feelings on mine. (layout that is. Not MIL(chuckle)) Suggestion.. Do not take the layout down until you find a plan. Or create one. Look at the plan and keep checking others out also. Just in case something changes your mind. Then take the layout down once you are really sure. Nothing worse than finding out you like the new layout less than the first or find a track plan yo ulike better. Of course that will usually happen anyway so don't wait for ever.  I hope you don’t get halted just as you get going like I was.

OK, I’m gone now. At least I'm outta here by when I'd hoped. Whistling

Good morning. It's 71 and cloudy. The high is expected to be 80 and there's a 40% chance of showers.

Only thing on the schedule today is to get some track soldering done. I'm sure some other things will come up though.

Jeff - nice pic!

Todd - no, the consultancy job was directly linked, so that´s gone, too!

I feel very empty.

Edit: I just checked the box my loco came in and found not only the missing handrail on the combine, but also a near complete set of D&RGW decals from Champ decals - with the price on: 25 c!

Good Morning,

Not much going on.  This is our last warm day, winter will be here by tonight with lows hovering around the freezing point for the foreseeable future.

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes on this cold and damp 38 degree morning..No modeling yesterday. I fooled around on the computer and went grocery shopping.I have no big plans for today.I did see 2 NS trains while out and about yesterday.I have seen a set pattern..NS will be extremely busy one day and slow the next..I suspect that may be cause by the new Federally mandated require time off.Should make railfanning easier.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

Have a good'un! Thumbs Up

Mourning AZ

Flo. just a Diet Dew Please.

Ulrich I wish there was something I could say that would make you feel better, but we both know there isn't. If Misery truly loves company  then you and I should be best friends.

Last week I said I had a feeling something bad was going to happen. My unemployment was due to run out in the middle of Nov and I knew that. Guess around August I asked about the extinctions I head about and would my dollar amount change. I was told "you are funded for the extinction, renew automatically and the dollar amount would not change".

I normally get $824.00 ever 2 weeks. Last check my original funding ran out and the check was for only $260.00, so I was short $564.00. (so what happen to the $ amount would not change?) Went to the unemployment offices to see what was going on. This time I was told that while I was funded, and the dollar amount would not change there was No Guarantee I would get the extinction. I should still call in on the 24th, and call and see if I got paid on the 26th.Talk about no giving me a warm and cozy feeling!

Even if I get paid, I am still not out of hot water. They are not going to make up the missing $564.00 and I cannot make the house payment before the end of the month. Am afraid I will go into fore-closer.

If I don't get the extinction, today after I pay the electric bill and buy dog food I have $30.00 left to my name.

So Ulrich I know where you are coming from and sometimes it is hard to pull your self back up. I know I am having a hard time doing so my self.

 On to a Sunnier subject.

Morgan Well I like this last plan the best so far. I need to study it more. Could you E Mail me the RTS Plan? If it is not listed let me know, I am 99% sure it is still there. All sp let me know if or when you sent it.

Playing with a different idea far as the bench. This time no not a around the room. Would you call this a folded dog bone? Sure does no look like a dog bone.

Down side to this plan so far.

1 Left wall where the yard is, is 4 foot wide. Now, with it all being straight I might get by with it.

2 No room for the turntable at this point. While it is still there, it is the smaller one that RTS has listed and it will not turn my Big Boy or Y6-b. Plus at this point there is no room for the engine house.

3 Little boring at this point.

 Plus side

1 All lines should have more than 100 feet of track. Longest will be around 112 feet.

2 Might be able to get the town in on the bloop.

3 All outside turns at this point is 36 inches or better.

 See you all latter.

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Blueberry Pancakes w/ lots of maple syrup to go with my cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug.  Thank you Ma'am!

Hate to eat and run, but I have too much stuff to get done today.  I managed to do about half what needed to get done yesterday!  Now where did I hide the furniture polish.........  Oh well (deep subject!)

Sir Madog

Jeff - nice pic!

Thanks. I do so enjoy patching UP units. The weathering was done with AIM powders and Valspar clear frosting. The decals were printed on tracing paper.

Sorry your job opportunity fell through. Hopefully something else will come along.
