Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a cup of decaf foe me.  I'll go sit in the back booth for a bit....

Ken...........  Bank of America, huh?  I did business once with them...  scr*wed me over good on a credit card problem.  I went down to my Credit Union and mentioned what was going on with Bank of America....  The clerk said, so why are you doing business with them? THAT was when I found out there is no need to keep my business purchases on a different card than my personal one.  So I raised my limit a few thousand on my Credit Union Visa and transferred the business stuff over to it.  Then i closed the BoA account.  Got many phone calls from them wondering if I was upset with them.  Several times I told them I don't pay 25% interest to anybody... Period!  They just didn't get it.  They said because I was late with the payment (it went out a day before it was due but didn't reach them by the due date...  postmark didn't count for anything, THAT was the best interest rate they could offer me....  I finally told them exactly which orfice to stick the 25% interest in and said that if they called me again I would contact the Better Business Bureau and my lawyer as they were now harassing me!  My Credit Union's % for my VISA Card is 9.9%  same as it has been for 15 years.

THAT is just one reason why I only do business with my local Credit Union.  If there is any problem, I call them and ask for Ann.  Ann knows me, I know Ann.  Problem will be taken care of to my satisfaction!  Opps!  Here comes the SoapBox  OK, OK, I'll be quiet....

Der....  I love your posts!  Big Smile

Jeffrey I see on Weather.com Louisiana had some really bad storms this afternoon.  Glad they missed Sundown!  The storm system appears to be heading toward the North East, which may be why the Finger lakes region of NYS is under a Flood Watch for Tuesday Night and all day on Wednesday.  They are talking 2 to 4 inches of rain with this.....

Next couple of days may be good ones to stay in the layout rooms. WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Somebody say .... Cookies?

Enjoy!  Ah, ah!  The one on the right is mine.....  You can have 2 of the others though.....Wink

Good evening Diners:  Page 61 and only the 29th of the month. AZ sure has us talking!

Ken what follows has nothing to do with your terrible day, and was written before I saw your post. Congratulations on the interviews BTW - things are looking up.Angel

I know there are "Nay-sayers" - and I've dealt with my share.  I want to be a Yeah-sayer.  Today's Yeahs include the mail bringing my Darlington Transistor to replace the toasted one in the Tech 2 our grandsons gave me. Yeah Second up, in the same mail - the Fibre Optics I ordered to attempt the bi-colour lighting for the signals I scored at the last Train Show. Haven't opened that yet, but Yeah Thirdly, the transistor installed with zero problems, and the Tech 2 is operational. It ran a DC Atlas GP 38-2 on the test track flawlessly (and So much better than my now officially retired Fleischmann 712 Transformer). Yeah Fourthly, I test ran the snowblower as it is a fine afternoon. Started right up first push of the starter. Si vis pacem, para bellum .Yeah In looking up that quote I found out that I had been miss-quoting  all along. "In time of peace, prepare for war" is what I thought it was, and what fits what I was doing on this fine snowless afternoon.  -Turns out it's a bit more grim in the original - "....if you wish for peace, prepare for war".Pirate

JR:

Well I also thought cookies would be welcome in a diner so what do I know anyway .   J.R.
...Oh but they are - Jeff said so "Clear your cookies!"  THAT can only mean the girls have bake dup another wonderful batch for which room must be made!

So, I'm off to make some legs for the silo, and watch the second half of a two part Mystery program, then bed, as it's early start tomorrow. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continue for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Sorry to hear about all your mishaps today, Ken - not really a good day for you.

On the layout issue, this is as good as I can do it. I can only follow my own design principles as I am Ulrich and you are Ken. It is your layout and you are perfectly fine choosing a different route - one that I would not head down.

Evening Folks

 Flo, beer please.

Had one of those day's today!

If you folks remember the state messed up my unemployment extinction few weeks all go. Today they fixed it. Big Smile

1 Called The Bank Of America on the 17th about my house payment. Spoke with someone and told them I should be payed on the 24th and would make a partial payment off $600.00 over the phone, and another $600.00 on 12-01-2010.

2 Call them on the 24th after the I got back from unemployment (I was not paid) and got the extinction fixed. I would pay $600 today and another $600.00 on the 12-08-2010.

3 Called today and spoke with Eric to make the payment, but they could not take a debit card over the phone.

4 Ran to my bank and deposited $600.00 into my checking account.

5 Called them to make the $600.00 payment, this time I was told they could not take a partial payment over the phone, had to mail a check?

6 Called again (you never get the same answer twice) and was told again that they will not take a partial payment over the phone and it had to be mailed.

7 Go my bank, got a Money order. I am out of checks.

8 Got rear ended at a stoplight!

9 Got the payment sent 10 minutes before the post offices closed.

10 Called them to let them know I sent the payment overnight. Then Andy told me "we could have taken the partial payment over the phone, I have no idea why you where told we could not"! Bang Head

I swear no one knows what the heck they are doing at Bank Of America!

On the bright side today? I have had 6 hits on my Resumes and have a interview sat up Tuesday. May have another one for Tuesday as well, had to cut the phone conversation short due to running to the bank! And I missed 4 phone calls while I was running and getting rear ended.

Chris Reason I show no turnouts between the different lines is because it is a pain at my skill level with the RTS cad ware. One wrong section and stuff goes flying ever where. It is easier to install turnouts than drawing them!

Ulrich Thanks for the time and effort. I forget who said it, but they stole Elegant right off my keyboard! It is a minimalist for me. More than likely you have all wise had to build smaller and more efficient  layouts. While I don't want a spaghetti bowl either. Would it help if I sent you detail pictures of what I have?

On getting to close to the wall, yep you are right. I will not make that mistake again. Main reason my plans show it so close is to keep the track clear from each other. It will be easier to do for real than with the RTS program.

On the hidden staging / lower level, what was the grade? That is something I never thought of, and while unsure I kind of like the idea. It would hide the train, like it went some where.

Morgan I need to re read your notes again. I will all so check my E Mail Tuesday.

Todd Thank You for your remarks as well!

Here is what I played with today.

 Wish me luck!

1.30 am and the pain won´t let me sleep Sad

Zoe, how about a mug of hot cocoa, please.

I am not taking the pain meds they gave me in the horsepiddle, as they are morphine based. Got a terrible hangover last time, which lasted two weeks.

Chris - good that you got the old Lionel flying again Cool. Thanks for your ideas on the layout - it´d be easy- peasy to add a few crossovers. But wait what Ken says about this layout dea.

Robby - there is a book by Lance Mindheim on room-sized switching layouts which may be worth looking at. It might be also useful to take a look at his Downtown Spur layout on his web page.

Trying to catch some sleep ... Zzz

Thanks JR. Actually, the original Lionel transformer is kaput... What we did, was get a Radio Shack transformer, which when combined with a couple of resistors, provides a workable voltage with enough amperage to propel the locomotive. Dr. Science (Dad) is currently fabricating a more esthetically pleasing container for the electrical apparatus. With the success, he's green-lighted The Wife putting up the tree (in the middle of the whole dang show now wouldn't ya know). I still can't see where the bad-ordered track section went sour...doesn't really matter I guess. I just like to be able to SEE why something went kaput.

Next year, I'm going to get a larger surface. A GP-20 will handle the tight radius just fine...but looks rather ridiculous doing so. The old 0-4-0 will look better, but I need to polish the pick-ups a bit more. I see one traction tire, which makes me wonder if there should be a second one.

Time to go dig-out the crate with the Insta-Tree...

THAT'S great news Chris. The 3 rail lionel track can be a pain as the insullators between the rails can braak down also. Good news the transformer is ok. Jumped to the conclusion it was bad as we've seen so many go belly up at the museum over time. Of course many of them were 30's/40's vintage and none too well cared for either.  Well I also thought cookies would be welcome in a diner so what do I know anywayWhistling.   J.R.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon/Evening peoples! We have success!!! Rerun was on his absolute best behavior (only gave Grandpa one "woof." THAT in and of itself is huge. But, we got the locomotive to motate!!! *happy dance* We discovered one section of track was shorting-out the loop. I still see no obvious defects, but swapping in another section brought action. JR: I won't be needing a transformer, Dr. Science (Dad) found a transformer which when combined with the proper resistor combination will w*** just fine. Thanks for the offer! Hmmmmmmmmmm, the tool bar with such ammenities as "bold" "ittalics" etc. has gone missing. Odd. Chris

I've got the stuff I'm keeping back in the closet. All the other stuff is in two big trash cans outside. The content of nine boxes (4 large, 5 small) has been sorted through and what's being kept is now in four boxes (1 large, 3 small) that all fit in one corner of the closet (bottom). Much of the space (top shelf, half of mid shelf) is taken up by my Apple IIe computer and one 5 1/4" drive (top shelf), a Hero Quest board game (top shelf), a Lexmark Z22 printer (LPT) and associated software (top shelf), rolls of paper towels and toilet paper (mid shelf), four 5 1/4" drives for the Apple IIe (mid shelf), software for the Apple IIe (mid shelf), monitor for Apple IIe (bottom)

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon.

ULRICH: Sorry about the ribs...I hate being right sometimes. I like your thinking on CUDA KEN's space/trackage. One thing I'd do with the double-track mainline, is put in a few more cross-overs. Here's why. The CNW had crossovers every few miles. The dispatchers used them to get faster trains around slower trains: the "bird" (Falcon TOFC train) around a coal drag as an example. Since KEN wants to run multiple trains, it could be a "fun" little game. But, on the other hand, if he just wants to "let 'em run" the X-overs would be unnecessary and a waste. I'm just sayin', I'D put in crossovers and use 'em if'n it were my empire.

Dr. Science (Dad) is due any minute to solve the Lionel issue... I'd best go check the coffee pot and remind Rerun he is to NOT maul Grandpa...

 Just a quick stop.

Been in the basement since this morning.   Working on the layout and getting some plans ready.    Here's something close with what I'm going with.     I have had most of my layouts "run arounds", but I enjoy switching on the layout.    This will be one of my first, well that is a switching.

I've found a few plans, and some ideas of my own for this layout.   Once I get a good plan going I will post it.  BUT for now, its still cutting wood, and getting it level.   So off to Lowe's later tonight.

Now the tables aren't that off, but this is more to give you a idea.

Flashwave

That's gorgeous, but I'm not finding the 4 separate mains? For running four separate trains?

Morgan - I know that one of Ken´s druthers is to have a 4-track main, but I don´t think he has the space for that, unless he wants to go for a blown up 4 x 8 type of layout with a spaghetti bowl appearance. I doubt that he is in for that. If you check both recent designs, Ken´s and yours, there is a major flaw to them - the track is too close up to the wall. If you add a minimum of 4" from the track to the layout edges in the inside , you won´t have enough room left to move around. Scenery does require a little bit of space.

I just want to show, what can be achieved in the given space without cramming too much track into the room. Actually, my favorite is the single track version, but that´s just me - a simple minded guy who likes it clear cut and simple. With the right kind of software (Costs about $ 80), Ken can have 4 trains running and with the hidden staging underneath Kenville, he can even change the trains en route. You don´t need 4 tracks to run 4 trains.

Again, I don´t think you can put up much more without creating a claustrophobic atmosphere.

John - I aimed at maintaining a minimum radius of 33", as Ken likes to run the big ones. There is one spot where I am already down to 29", but that´s at the mine. You don´t see a Big Boy switching there Whistling

Before I make any further alterations, let´s wait and see what Ken thinks about it.

Out for the day - see you all tomorrow!

So far in going through the closet I've found a wealth of very old computer software (DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Win 95. Win 98) that will be chucked out. I've also found 2 Bachmann ore cars, a Model Power stock car, several coal loads for Bachmann hoppers, some 1:87 sports cars, some 1:87 regular cars, about two big handfuls of 1:87 Ford and Dodge vans, some 1:87 John Deere tractors and heavy equipment, an assortment of 1:87 semi tractors, 2 bottles of WS blended turf, 2 bottles of WS gray ballast (1 medium, 1 fine) and a large assortment of WS and Life-Like figures still in their packages including one package of 6 train crew figures.

Afternoon all! Started a postion in the Amazon warehouse last night, had fun, We'll see how I feel after today. Got a call from La Quinta Hotel, they want an interview. Figures... Amtrak wants Hospitality for a resume, so La Quinta'd be the better option long term. Ah well. We'll see when they open, Amazon doesn't think they'll need all of us after the first week post Christmas.

Ken: Move to Indiana?

cudaken

 Hello, been a few days.

 Flo Beer please.

Been preoccupied last few days trying to get a job. Have sent out resumes from anything from delivering news papers to division manager. I have been a regional manger twice, so that not a stretch, and when I was 12 I delivered News Papers so I am quantified. Big Smile  Have sent out 39 in the last two days. I just hope I have the gas money to go on interviews.

Morgan, lets see if you can make out the notes.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j284/cudaken/Layut%20ideas/Morgan1.jpg

My E Mail address is cudaken3834@aol.com

Here what I have been playing with the last few days.

 http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j284/cudaken/Layut%20ideas/Curves2jpg.jpg

Sure has the mountain feel to it.

Far as the double decker comments. Do not think it would work well with the way I like to run the trains. I like to sit back and watch from afar.

All so been fighting a tooth ache for the last few days. it is not God awful, with no money for a dentist visit all I can do is hope.

   Ken

Ah, yes, I can read those. My notes however, cannot... Anyway. Under the "What is this" was a squiggle that listed it as a placefholder for the possible switching thingy. Another town possibly as well. Which is why I didn't pull "More towards the wall" more towards the wall. Not sure what you were talking about "Move down a few degrees"

E-mail's on the way.

Sir Madog

... and here is the version with a two-track main line:

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv185/SirMadig/KensLayout3.jpg

It may need one or two more tracks in Kenville yard - I will be looking into that tomorrow.

That's gorgeous, but I'm not finding the 4 separate mains? For running four separate trains?

der5997

Like the Bobbers - Does every HO layout have one of those? Seemed to be the norm for the Spruce Grove HO fraternity.http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/Gifs/Locos/bobbercaboose.gif

You'd be right, it's up there with Warbonnet Fs. BUT, if SouthWestern Car Shops gets their way (my road) the fashionable way to travel the country in your own private railcar will be the
"modern Bobber".

Sadly, they all ride about like that too. No suspension. Or, there is in the fictional world in the form of a mattress like bed of springs, but not on the old bobbers. Nice thing though, they can be easily put on a Lowboy trailer.  I;m told Conrail actualy did build an Oscar, but it too rode like a washboard, made a VP motionsick, and it was scrapped before anyone knew the stupidity. I was also told this by one of the members of our more matured society, who, shall we say might well have been too close to the welders for too long...

Love the photos of the families, cute groups.

Good afternoon Folks: Half way between lunch and tea-time Hmmm, does this call for a Hot Chocolate?

Ray:

The sun is a shinin' to welcome the day....
...and "the pride of the morning to ye too Sir!...even if it is a "Christmas Craft Fair" that's on offer to be Heigh-ho'd and off to! (full text  @ http://www2.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Come_to_the_Fair_%28Easthope_Martin%29)LOL  We have a frosty but clear day going here on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore.  Frost persisting where the sun has  yet to touch it.  However that on the van windshield has melted - which is good.

Ulrich: You plan is very elegant with the two track main.  In order to give a few more tracks of yard at Kenville, how much space might be free-ed up if the peninsular for Black Diamond Mining were to be slewed around to the right at its bottom end, giving a wider approach to the wall under the AC unit? (Would that not also ease the curve into the staging in that area?) The curve off the bridge might suffer in radius, but one wouldn't see the whole thing because of the view block in any case. The other curve, "south" of Black Diamond is an inside curve visually, so sharpening it wouldn't be as bad. My 2 Cents

Have a silo roof and base to attach - better warm up the rivet gun!

Moirnin' everyone!

Zoe, hope it's not too late for breakfast....  What?  All day long?  I guess it is first thing in the morning somewhere out here in cyberspace, so breakfast it is.  I'll have  the #2 special, eggs over easy, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast (bring over the strawberry preserves please....)

"The sun is a shinin' to welcome the day...."  Ah, a lovely day here in the Finger Lakes.  High in the mid 40's and i have the whole day to do whatever I want!  As long long as "what I want" is to stack wood, do dishes, and some wash.....  might even get to w**k on the layout for a while!

So, are we gong to move up North into snow and ski country for December?  Seems only right if we are to have a "White Christmas" of which I am dreaming...........  Tell ya what!  I'll supply a couple of face cords of this for the pot bellied stove in the back:

We'll be warm as toast here in the diner!

A wonderful and blessed Advent to those of the faith!

Later!

Todd - I am sorry to hear about your Mom - my Angel for her!

You have made a very good point with the benchwork being too narrow. I tend to be a bit of a scrooge when it comes to benchwork - I am just not used to have that much space available.

Is that better?

Btw, the operator is just about the right size (not me, though - I´d need more, say, circumference). As you can see 2ft. aisle are not wide enough to feel comfortable.

Edit: I just noticed that the plan can be converted to a two-track main line without much effort - I shall be doing this soon!

Good Morning! Biscuits and Gravy please. Coffee too thanks.

Bad day yesterday. Well not BAAAD, but disheartening. Mom went down again. This time it was me here. Not pretty at all. Took her to the Hospital and they pulled 400cc’s of urine from her bladder and she seems to have a touch of Pneumonia in the lower left lung. That sound right? I thought you had it or you didn’t. Oh well might have misunderstood the lower left lung part. She's feeling much better by the time we left for the night.

Anywho, Going to go to do the bookwork at the Church this morn, then get out to Mom’s house. Won’t go to the hospital today because she said it would be a waste of time and she’ll see me enough to get sick of her when she gets out in a couple days anyway. According to Brenda, Mom’s stay at our house is indefinite.

Funny thing about this spell corrector on the computer. I figures Guhlooorius to be laborious, but it can’t get indefinite out of indefinate. Tongue Tied

J.R.- Odd as it may sound, I’m glad you didn’t have a pipe stretcher. It doesn’t make me feel as bad when some tool I need I don’t have, as common as it may seem to be for the type of operation you run. I’m right there staring into the tool box with you hoss, thinking “what else would work” before trying a few things and basically killing an hour before heading into town to get what I need.

Ken- Well now, Over all, I like this last rendition of the track plan I believe a bit better than the previous. Why? I don’t know. Just the looks. I see two or three towns, industrial areas, a space for something else and of course, what appears to me would be, a more manageable yard. Now a turnout or two to connect the lines, oh, never mind I see them, and a few team tracks for some industry and maybe I see a bit of room when the scenery gets ironed out for an abandoned bit of Narrow gage track disappearing into a dilapidated boarded up tunnel in the mountains somewhere. Where’s the still gonna be? As Ulrich said maybe a bit awkward, but I’m not seeing quite to the extent he is. Maybe lose the last peninsula and stretch the others out a bit? I don’t know. I assume there will be walkways or an abundance of popups. THAT is something you may want to think about. EVERY time you want to do something you must open a popup. If it is slightly out of reach, get down and open another popup.

J.P.- Good to see you again. Please do stop in and tell us what’s been happening.

Ulrich- Hmmm. I like your plan in a very mature way. Applying good sense and reason that is probably a very good plan and, I do like it. Actually, very much. The issue I have with it is…, it’s not United Statsian. If there is more room, efficiency gets thu-ROWN out the window in favor of more. Me, I would make the bench work a bit wider on the….the…I don’t know what to call them. Peninsulas once you remove the lift outs? Not too wide, but as wide as can get to be able to comfortably reach a bit over half of the …bench work from one side. The parts against the wall are fine. Keep in mind these are MY thoughts not Ken’s.

Jeff- Let’s face it. You live in, and model, somewhat rural/smalltown Louisiana…..you need flapping doors.

Gotta go before Jeff hears that and throws a roll at me. ( he knows I’m joking though. We small towners are all about flapping doors. )

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good morning AZ!

Only a few more hours in AZ, then we will see where we are off to.

I took the Kia in today over the tranny bucking issue. Lets see what they find out.

MIL is OK, but still dehydrated even with IV fluids. They cleared up the pneumonia infection, and now want to put her in a home for awhile to give her better care and get her "back on her feet" like they HOPE. Her left side {affected by the stroke 15 yrs ago} won't get any better, but she is quickly loosing the use of the left leg, which is bad in terms of her getting around much.

WE shall see what we shall see when we shall see it.

Have a great day!

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Good morning. It's 61 and cloudy. The high will be 74 with a 50% chance of strong afternoon thunderstorms.

Nothing in particular planned for today, just some general layout work. I was sorting through some stuff yesterday and found 3 decoders. Two Bachmann and 1 Digitrax. I've also been smoothing out the plaster on the layout with a putty knife. There's a bunch of little chips piled up here and there. Hooking up the 12 foot hose to the wall mounted Shop-Vac and putting it to use wouldn't be a bad idea. Also got the other half of the closet to sort through. No telling what I'll find.

Good morning All,

It was 20F this morning when I left for the shop. Had a dickens of a time scrapping the ice off the windscreen as well - like it was welded on.

Nice pics everyone. i couldn't even get back online after I left the shop yesterday - I think puter trouble again though I didn't spend a lot of time trying to fix it. Still sorting and putting stuff away in the basement pending the start of the layout room. I'll start with the outline on the floor and go from there. If I'm smart I'll do the ceiling before I finish the walls as last time adding wiring was a real pain with the walls done.

Lots to do again today so I'd best get to it.   CUL,   J.R.

 Good "icy" morning.

I have a lot to do this morning.  Mail back the weathering powers, go by the bakery, see about getting the snow tires put on the car.   Then..........come back and work on the layout some more.

Barry.......That won't be hard to do.  I will send you a PM later.

Sawyer...Vincent.....Tough break on the Packers yesterday.    The Steelers have the Ravens Sunday night.  That  will be a good game, but I don't think the Steelers can keep up.  They have WAY to many holes!!!

We be getting a bit of a sunny break for today--then it'll be right back to the swing of things with more rain and snow and dull dull dullWhistling

Robby:  I'm looking at doing something like this to an HO scale truck---minus the flapping doors---

Also--a few more thingees to toss around...Whistling

Can you tell that this truck has been sitting around for awhile?WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

As for when they have me booked for my ICD surgery it will be in December 10th---at 7:30amWhistling

Ulrich: I like the looks of that set up--I might actually use that idea for my basement layout---heeheeheeSmile, Wink & Grin

Any argument carried far enough will end up in Semantics--Hartz's law of rhetoric Emerald. Leemer and Southern The route of the Sceptre Express Barry

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

Well, I did not catch much sleep - that nagging pain keeps me from falling asleep!

Chloe, some dark roast in a gallon mug, please.

I think I have voiced a sufficient amount of critique on Ken´s layout ideas. Now is the time to present an alternative!

Here it is:

Now, it does not feature a 4-track mainline, a big yard, a roundhouse, but it has a mine operation, is planned for running big steam and long trains and allows for some nice scenic features. It has a 6 track staging yard underneath the town of "Kenville" (not shown), serving as a staging yard. It can give up to three people a lot of operation fun, 2 of them running trains and one switching the mine operation. It is based on Pelle Soeeborg´s "Daneville & Donner RR", which I have adapted to fit into Ken´s room.

Just food for thought, Ken - nothing more, but nothing less!
