Good morning All,

Just above freezing but sunny so it should be a good (if chily) day. I'll have a regular please and a Blueberry muffin to go.

Flopped down before the one eyed hypnotist last night and got nothing done but a nap before bed. I have our vintage sports car club annual general meeting tomorrow and perhaps a side trip to Springfield Ma to see the site of a proposed in the streets vintage race so I'll makeup for my laziness tomorrow.

Hope you're better soon Krump - that's not a good way to get rid of a car no matter what.

Der - that water tank should be good - keep us posted please. Our machinist gave me an article on how to scratch build a water tower using sheet plastic and a stocking container (one of those old Leggs things that came in an egg shaped plastic container) so I can try my hand at that as well. Did find a box of girder parts (probably Central Valley) in cleaning the other day. Speaking of cleaning I did get the hobby bench components moved to the basement the other day so that's a start. I deserved it after spending the earlier part of the day shovelling dirt into the planters the CFO constructed at either side of the front of the house. Wet dirt is not real easy to move.

Onward and upward and out into the shop to start the days proceedings.  CUL, J.R.

 Mourning AZ

Flo, just a coffee with cream and sweet and low.

JR reason I have such a big air compressor is to keep up with my air tools. I had a 3 HP 30 gallon up right and it would not keep up with my DA's, Air File and paint gun. With mechanical work like you do, you pull the trigger say for 15 seconds, then lay down the tool till you get to the next bolt. With body work I may have the tool running for 10 minutes with out stop. Small one only lasted for about 5 minutes then I had to wait for it to build back up.

Gary Far as building a double deck layout. Sort of but no really. I inversion two mains section being around 3 inch taller than the other around most of the track. I have yet to figure how to use the elevation part of the RTS program.

Vincent I am going to pass on the Ham's car, just does not do anything for me. I will get you Auto Rack boxed up and PM you the information.

Ulrich and Morgan. I was hopping for some comments of the part of the plan I posted. You don't have to be kind, I can take!

Well, it is 7:00 AM, Sue has came out two times now to let me know Tiff is out of her Little Cesar dog food (her breakfast snack) so I guess I will head out and get some.

 Good morning.

Man did I have a bad (almost bad) night last night.   First we went to see Jessicas grandma, and IDIOT pulled right out in front of us.   I had to lock the Sonata down, and missed him by half a foot.   Of course I gave him a piece of my mind also.   That's all we need to get the Sonata wrecked again.   Second the "mother in law" might be coming up for Thanksgiving.   Why is that bad?   Its not, but we have no heat up stairs, and she said she would be fine.   It gets pretty cold, and also my B-Day is on Thanksgiving this year.   I don't wanna baby-sit the M-I-L.

Today........Finish up the boxcar, do clothes, and finish packing for the show.

 PC............Long time no see!!

Good Morning! Coffee and a sweet roll please. One of the big ones. Warmed with a couple pats of real sweet cream butter on top. Thaaaank you!Dinner

Today, sunny and a high of 75. Tonight, rainy with a low of 50. Then tomorrow, high of 55 with rain. Nice weather seems to be over. Of course in a month or two I’ll be giddy over 50 degree weather and rain as opposed to 3 million degrees below zero and sn….(gulp) I can’t say it.

Good Afternoon,

there is a terrible storm outside - I am glad I can stay inside, too much Storm.

Flo, a strong coffee for me, please!

Robby - this is your weekend! I am sure the show will be a great success for you!

Ken - RTS allows you  to draw the track as a single line, a double line or a double, filled line. You can also change the thickness of the lines and the color. Go to the view button and select properties. Change the track to single line and the color of the grid to gray - it will be much easier to follow your track plan. Some comments on your drawing: I still think you are trying to put too much into the space you have, without achieving what you really want to have. If you are a railfan - modeler, wouldn´t you like to watch your trains snake around gentle curves in some spectacular scenery? I am afraid this requires a slightly different approach. Your curves look "boxy" - they have no easements, and the track is neatly lined up along the wall. That won´t give you that sweepin´ look which adds to realism. Take a second look at your druthers, think about how you want to operate your layout and what kind of "view" you´d like to have. After all, a layout is a stage for our trains! Just my thoughts ...

You all have a good day!

Mornin'    heh, heh, heh......

Hi Zoe, just a cup of dark roast and a couple slices of raison bread toasted with real butter on them....  heh, heh.....

What?  What am I so happy about?  I'm heading out the door in a few minutes to go play with model trains on an MMR's fantastic layout....  Looking forward to it as you can see.

He moved this layout to Hammondsport all the way from Dallas Texas, reassembled it, and enlarged it.  Rewired for DCC (NCE) and it is one of the best laidout for operations as well as being top shelf scenery.

Catch you all later!

Good morning.

Yesterday was a day I'd gladly trade for a better one. I had to be up early (4:30 am) to get my mother to an appointment at a surgical hospital in Alexandria at 7:30. I got to my parent's place at 5:50 and right from there things started going wrong. She was supposed to be ready to go at 6:00. Instead I find her sorting through her meds so she can show them what she has to take. She finished with that at 6:10. Then she had to get more things together that she had to take along. She couldn't have done this the night before so it could just be grabbed on the way out? Can anybody say 'disorganized'? We have everything together and it's now 6:25. Now she needs a bathroom break. We're finally on the road at 6:45. We have 45 minutes to go 60 miles and neither of us know exactly where the surgical center is. We know it's on Bolton Avenue but Bolton runs from one side of the city to the other! Driving my mother's car is bad enough at times as I find it to be quite uncomfortable but driving it while she's in it almost requires combat pay. She's the perfect side seat driver. Any problems encountered due to bad directions given by her are ultimately my fault and at times I wish there was a luggage rack on the roof. We get to Alexandria at 7:45 as there were several road construction detours along the way. At this point I'm really getting it in the right ear about getting there late at which time I have to hand it back that she was the reason for us being late. Naturally she doesn't see it that way. We hunt around a bit and find the surgical hospital. It's now about 8:10. I get her inside to the admission desk so it's now about 8:20. I had intended to from there to the LHS but then I'm informed that I can't leave. They need me there in case anything goes wrong. I can foresee a really boring day ahead. I checked out the TV but of the very limited fare they had it seemed to all news, shopping channels and soap operas. The news seemed downright depressing, the shopping channels were just about to make me gag and the soap operas had me wondering if there was a hangman's noose somewhere nearby. At noon I headed for the surgical center's cafeteria where I had a small lunch consisting of a chicken salad sandwich and some chips. Finally the procedure she was there for was finished but now she had to be in recovery for a couple of hours. Finally the time came that she was strong enough to get around a bit and give the staff a hard time. We finally escaped from the facility at which time I headed for the LHS. She was still a bit wobbly on her feet so she stayed in the car while I went in and picked up two bachmann freight cars, a Santa Fe Conditionaire covered hopper and a Nickel Plate 40' gondola. We then went to a fast food place with a drive through. I got a cheese burger for myself and a medium Sprite for her. She can't have anything solid until later today. The trip back home was mostly uneventful. We almost got knocked off the road by a log truck that was changing lanes whether we were there or not. I had to slow down fast enough to get clear of the truck but not get clobbered by the tail-gating idiot behind me. I finally got her home then went back to my own home where I headed right for the bed. I got an hour or two of sleep then proceeded on with my evening.

Jeff ... I hope your Mom will be OK after all of that. .... I think LHS's are better than medical care places.

Todd ... Snubbing Ray ..  ???? ... ahhhhhh.... We had better be careful after the hospitality in Upstate NY during October. Any wine left?

Der John ... I like your little grain bin.

Here, my large bakery (a bread factory) is now done. It's freelance design, and I used Walthers modular parts, and added details from other sources.  I'm installing the industrial tracks to serve it. Scenery will follow.

Vincent .. You recntly posted you had some Smokey Valley handrails.  I meant to tell you I have sued Smokey Valley handrails on Tenshodo GP7 I rebuilt. Engine looks good, but the old metal gear drive is sort of a clunker. So, it's now a display shelf model.

Sorry to leave ya hangin'

Reccomendation: Open RTS. Place two #6 swtches so the diverging leads are against each other, and you have two paralell tracks. Even out the ends, I belive what you'll need is a 3 and a 1.5in straight. Copy that, pste it, and then connect one of the flat ends of each with a 22" radius. Flex track the other gap, 8.0 will automatically vut it down, that's a 24" curve. Move the switches up, and do again. That's a 26. Repaet to preference. Tholse curves you can then use to build your new curves in the yard. What you have is nice, but there's too much space lost between the curves (or so it looks to me) When you do the real curves, then use flex and a curved jig, like a tracing on a piece of carboard

Beyond that, I've heard mixed reviews on curved yards. They can be pains to recouple in, but if you aren't doing a lot of that, you'll be fine. My honest preference would be to put the yard on the long wall, save yourself the hassle of curved yards, and use the short wall for the curving effects. But that's my thoughts, and there is merit to putting the yard on that end of everything, since it's the only real flat edge you have.

 Evening AZ

 Flo, lots of Beer please.

I got to get a JOB. Either that or kill my wife, she is driving me nuts!

Is it me or her time.

Sue is so paranoid she makes OSH seem like a Optimist Club. I hate to BBQ chicken quarters but 10 pounds for $5.99 hard to say no to them. Reason I hate to BBQ them is due to flair up from the grease. Today I tried something different, I bought a Tin Pan thingy (like pies would come in) to start BBQing then in.Got the chicken fat out and no flair up, worked great. I told Sue I was going to wash it and reuse later. Her retort was "it had raw chicken in it, so it needs to be thrown away".

OK, folks the tin pan thingy was sitting over open flame and the chicken hit 180 degrees before I placed them on the open grill. So any bacteria that might been on the raw chicken should be BBQ as well, in other words dead. Using Sue logic we should throw away the frying pan every time we use one. It had raw meat in it.

OK, was it me or her? Whole day has been like this, I just picked the BBQ part.

I beginning to hope Santa brings me a pillow, deep freezer, plastic sheets, chain saw, big wood chipper and a lake full of hungry catfishes!  I all ready have the Latex Gloves.

Morgan Just seeing where things might fit far as the yard goes. As noted it would be more for holding trains than switching. What about the rest of it?

Ulrich  I see where you are coming from about the hugging the walls and turns are to uniform. Here in the Midwest things are pretty flat and that is what I am use to seeing. This is a plan I threw together while I was BBQing the chicken in the bacteria infested pan. While I was doing it, had the screen blown up and missed the fact the A/C was where I placed the bridges. Lines that I posted would be elevated around 6 inch off the bench. The 2 truck lines would be at bench zero for now.

All folks feel free to join in!

Time to watch some CSI shows for tips! Big Smile

Evenin' folks!

Flo, I'll have 14oz rib eye steak, baked potato w/ sour cream, and a trip to the salad bar to start with.  Oh and a cup of decaf coffee please.  What?  Oh medium rare, like I always do, yes ma'am and thank you.

Holy Moley, Jeffrey.  Around your place it doesn't rain but it pours I guess!  Well (deep subject), maybe he can help you with the Van......  Hey, sorry!  Cheesh, Jeffrey, I was just being funny...  Hey!  Cut it out....

Whew!  OK, the operating session was a blast this afternoon.  I ran 2 different runs.  The first a local Passenger Train, and the second A through freight.  I picked up a lot more info of how he is doing operations on his layout.  This will be a big help as I plan for operations on the SLOW.  As soon as I have the lift out back and permanently put in place at the top of Bare Mountain (Yes THAT is spelled right!) I can finish the tracks up there.  I am then ready to start looking at operating the pike.  It doesn't hurt to be running trains on a layout THAT looks like this.

The Coaling Tower is scratch built for a modeling contest.  It has individual bolt heads on the bracing.....  The 100' turntable is also scratch built.  You can see some other quick snapshots of Ned's (MMR) empire here.

Hey again PC!

Robby, good luck and have fun at the show!  I bet you sell out.....

Ken..............  Ah............  I think your wife may be related to my sister.........  Hmmmmm.  (Shakes head....)   Ah, yeah, I would just wash out the pans well.  It might be a good idea to mark them for THAT single purpose, as bacteria could grow on any thing not washed away, but certainly no problem with using them over for the BBQ Grill....

Later!

Ken, if you got to just wash the dang pan. Easy way to get around that problem.

well, not much work on the "plan", although I think I have a design that I like. Of course it's pretty basic, but then it will be expanded later on.

Good evening guys

Jeffrey W. I sent you a conversational PM kinda Off Topic BUT very important to you and me!

Cuda Ken- somethings, like ziploc storage or freezer bags or tinfoil  that had raw meat in it needs to be thrown out. WAShing those doesn't work well enough to kill the germs. If it was a "pie pan" of which you had a lot of, I would have thrown it away to satiate the wife, but otherwise I would have put it inthe dishwasher or hand washed it with very HOT water and soap...

Robby P. here's to a GREAT weeekend show and a total sell out!

well, TTYALL8R

Got the snow blower running this afternoon. It was a wonderful, almost warm, sunny day, so I thought I'd better "In time of peace, prepare for war!" Smile, Wink & Grin

JR:

Der - that water tank should be good - keep us posted please. Our machinist gave me an article on how to scratch build a water tower using sheet plastic and a stocking container (one of those old Leggs things that came in an egg shaped plastic container) so I can try my hand at that as well. Did find a box of girder parts (probably Central Valley) in cleaning the other day.
...yup, the Leggs egg would make a dandy modern water tower. However, this particular project calls for a chicken feed silo - sorry to disappoint  - but Hey, the construction wouldn't be that far off I guess.  This particular HO project is based on a cut-down Craft acrylic paint bottle (two silos from one bottle, as it happenedThumbs Up) A larger tank just needs a larger bottle as a starting  core (and for a water tank, I'd guess a different profile on the base, if not the top as well.) I'm typing this waiting for the white glue to dry under a strip of  "rivets" joining the plates that make up that base cone in the real thing. Photos when I'm through that phase. OK, so I've done that. Here's the result and the top

Ken: I'm already liking the look of the new plan - those bridges near the A/C could be made to work if you are going to have some moveable access thing for getting at the A/C - what do you think?Question

(by Ray) Ah, yeah, I would just wash out the pans well.  It might be a good idea to mark them for THAT single purpose, as bacteria could grow on any thing not washed away, but certainly no problem with using them over for the BBQ Grill....
...we have a cutting board for veggie things, and one for meats,  and  thus far the system has not been broken. The meat one has a tag on the handle so we know which is which. (Suck it up, Microsoft, "that is that" makes no sense in this context!Clown)

Time for bed, early start to get some errands done before the train show tomorrow.  Good Luck RobbyP, you'll do just great!Yeah

Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity, and Peace.Angel

Good Morning Folks,

Saturday, November 13th - an important day for Petra and me. To say I am a little edgy about today´s outcome is just a little understatement!

Janie, I´ll have a mug of coffee and a breakfast bagel, please!

Ken - I see you are moving in the "right" direction. The two of us have to combine our efforts - your design ideas and my ability to master RTS should lead to your dream plan. How about making a rough drawing of what you have in mind and I will put it into RTS?

Robby - good luck and good success at the show. I know you will have that - your cars are just perfect!

John -  this water tank is just great! How can you handle such small parts?

Ray - Bare Mountain? Reminds me of Grizzly Adams, but who´s the Grizzly and where is Mr. Adams?

PC - Often - oftener -  oftenest, bad - batter - batterest, good - goodier - goddess? Ain´t that correct? English speak is difficult speak. When I started out learning English in school, I kept telling myself that in the US and the Commonwealth, even little children are able to learn that language, so why shouldn´t I? One day I might have learned it!

Big Smile

I'd be gettin' some idea as to where your yard is unless I've misunderstood your most recent post and that 's the same plan. Otherwise you'll cut yorself down on space.

Also, the bottom curve around the Airconditioner, there's an S curve in there, it heads to the wall a bit, then makes a second turn. it's best I think to put a straight section. The pros reccomend the length of your longest unit, but all you need is proper space for the truck to straighten out, so a 6" straight there will do you wonders I think.

Also, and I'm addign this to my list as well (my RTS screwed up, I moved out of the Admin panel on my comp and into a non-admin user side, and RTS on that side doesn't see any of it's libraries anymore so I have to go back and find them...) have you thought of crisscrossing and/or splitting the mainlines, or do you want to keep them parallell at all times? It would help to break some fo the uniformity Madog mentioned. Case in point: SP's Donner Pass, at several points, one trac went trough a mountin's edge, the other went along the outside rim of it. They weren't split too far from each other, but it gives you some varience.

Good morning all,

My corn field, wheat field, and static grass are in so I need to make arrangements to pick that up this weekend.  Still plugging away at the east end of the layout, progress is slow but sure.  I did make some new molds; one of them a covered lath machinery load came out better than I thought. When I cast it you can feel the texture of the cloth.  All I used was a small block of wood and a bolt then covered it with a scrap of material from the GF’s sewing room.

Good luck Ulrich and Robby.

Morning all

Jeffrewy W. I continued our conversation. Your nephew could be  a godsend? if he helps you out more? as he is rihgt next door? I thought your sister was gonna move in next door? What happened to that? Is that enough questions? should i ask more?

Der- your chicken feed silo looks great! even the rivets look cool....

Robby P. I hope you have a great day at the train show today and sell out quickly! Let us know as soon as you get home. Is this a 2 day weekend affair?

Special thoughts and prayers needed for our train-nut friend's wife who had a completed hysterectomy and honeydew mellon sized ovarian cyst removed in 4.5 hours of surgery and continues to need blood and is vomiting all the time...not recovering well as would hope....so add her to the prayer lists please...Angel Angel

I got the laundry done finally though now the sheets need to be done and time for the winter fuzzy warm fleece sheets and the mattress heater to go back on. Need to get a cheap white top sheet to go on the mattress warmer as the colored red fuzzy sheets tend to bleed where we lay. Oh, and the mattress to be rotated now. will need other half's help with that chore. LAundry never ends does it? Bang Head TG we have a washer and dryer onbaird here and don't have to go out to do it.

Have many chores to do to button down the place for winter dreading it, but must be done and witht eh cold weather we ahve been having I guess its time to take the window A/c out of BR window as we haven;t used it much. It is there to help offset eth heat produced by teh O2 concentrator. During the real cold months it is a blessing to warm up the room, but during warmer weather we roasts.

WEll other half wants a nap before we go ut shopping for supplies to button up so I could join as I didn;t sleep well last nigth and other half up early today as though was going to work onlyest thing is its a day off.

Catch y'all l8R

Today I will continue working on the hillside and start to add some bench work so I can continue with the first loop, if you will. I get tired of running trains point to point, night after night. I think I’ll work some on the Bed &Breakfast also. Might practice on some weathering too. Maybe do a little ballasting. Who knows. If there is time I hope to make it to the FLHS to do some shopping and pick up a few things I need/want. Maybe tomorrow. Then Brenda and I can make it a Castle trains and Golden Corral run. ( *snap!*) Oh wow, where am I? hm. Guess I was dreaming.

Good Morning! Coffee and some glazed donuts please. Thanks.

Robby gone? Shoot. I wanted to wish him good luck.

Just got off the not so evil bay. Have a bid in on a 4-4-0 and three cars. I don’t know why, I already have my tourist trap train. Guess the price is temping enough to bid on. I doubt I’ll get it as I bid pretty low. Ya never know though.

Back to snubbing Ray. The first thing that caught my eye is the amazingly scale look to the stairs on the coaling tower as well as the handrailsBow. Hmm I guess he did bring in pictures. Ok, I'm over it.

Jeff- I say it again Indifferent ( know the smiley thing calls it “indifferent“, but I don’t use it for that. It looks more like a wide eyed look of horror or amazement based on the situation) I’ve got it. Just post a list of things you need help with on the door……, shabing! You’ll not be bothered. Brilliant.

Best get out to Mom’s house. Odds and ends need to be done. Besides, the cordless phones here at the house seem to not be workingConfused. They ring just fine, bless their little pea pickin’ batteries, but they just don’t answer. My solution? Unplug ‘em. We have 2 corded types. Brenda, well apparently, based on the ranting and raving going on, she does not share the same opinion on phones as I do. She just keeps answering (well, trying to) the phones she knows do not work. while ignoring the ones that do. It's a woman thing I suppose. I just stay out of it. Safer for me that way.

Soon enough I’ll have time to spend being (trumpets sound) KING of TODDLAND!!! (‘tis good to be king)

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!
