Good Morning,

I hope everyone had a great weekend.   Jeff, all too true; my last mechanic told me I needed to change my spark plugs and plug wires.  I found a new mechanic quickly that had a better grasp on diesel trouble shooting.

Just a cup of coffee please.

 Morning New York

Well I was up early this mourning, 4:00 AM again, but feeling pretty good for now.

Jeffery Your story reminded me of something that happen at Auto Stupid. It was looking for a part for my 69 Charger R/T, I forget what part but doesn't matter. Guy at the counter asked me the year, 69, make, Dodge, Type, Charger, engine, 440, how many liters? I looked at him funny and said pick the biggest one. Then he wanted to know if it came with Catalytic Converters or not. Laugh I just looked at him and said "In 1969 we had no idea what unleaded gas was and the only converter the cars has is in the transmission".

Guess it would be like a kid today looking at DC Athearn Blue Box and ask where is the decoder?

Vincent  on your door, if it was a newer car and a insurances job I would have the door skin replaced. Above the top center body line where it looks like a arrow point toward the rear, the metal is starched where it was pushed against reinforcement bar. Unless you can heat shrink, a new door is not a bad idea. I has so many customer that doors had that kind of damage and not understand why it was not worth fixing.

Are you going to have the whole car painted?

Going to run the trains a little, then start installing Kitchen Cabinets doors. I got 7 painted yesterday and they should be OK to handle now. Have 7 more ready for paint, that will happen after the sun comes up, it is now 6:37 and not a hint of daylight yet.

 Good morning.

Well I have a busy day.  Post office,  some grocery shopping, library, etc....  I also started to practice math questions last night for the test in a couple of weeks.   Boy have I had fun with that Whistling.

I do have a customers car to work on, and maybe take a car to a friends house Wednesday.  That will give me some good practice.

I will pop back in later.

Morning guys.

Well my baby is at the Doctors.

I am still not a happy camper.

My Kia Sedona minivan that is. The tow is covered by Kia. If it takes longer than a day or two to fix, I will get a loaner car from the dealer. The repair, whatever it may be, is covered under warrantee, That is the only good parts. The bad part is that it is only 4 years old and it quit at 49,461 miles.

ROBBY P> I looked at that website... the only thing they have on the Kia Sedona  is the body squeak {which I swear is the stow-n-go folding flat seats} and the seatbelts not working right WHICH it was to go in tomorrow for anyway to replace those under warrantee...I don't know if I can add a complaint, but until I know for sure what the problem is I can't add it as a complaint. YEt. TX.

Well, I hope everyone is having a better day than I am so far.

Nothing much planned for today I guess as we are one vehicle less now.

Good morning All,

Just a coffee, regular to go please. Got lots done on the house yesterday which I had off because we can't race Sunday in Ct.

Galaxy - sorry to hear about your woes but glad the dealer has the car and will cover the tow.

Jeff and Ken - it's all too true. We've had guys here ask "what are those"  when we've had the distributor cap off to reset the points. Ordering parts is always fun - "Whats the application?" 59 Cooper Monaco.  "Sorry we show a Dodge Monaco or a BMW Mini Cooper - don't you even know what you've got for a car?"

Back to the shop and back to it.  CUL, J.R.

Good Morning! Coffee.

Gonna do the deposits for the Church, see Mom, then head out to the house.

Did I ever mention the time I was in NAPA several years ago and asked the experienced man of tomorrow for a choke heated air tube for a ‘79 Trans Am? After the usual biographical questions he finally said “Are you sure it has one? I don’t show it has one.” “Yup, right here in my hand. See?” “Hm… are you sure you know that’s what it is? ‘cause I sure don’t show one.” “ Well what your machine calls it, I don’t know, but it runs from the choke well to the choke on the carb. Whatever, your machine calls it, that’s what it is.” “Well, (he says with a half sneer) I don’t even show a choke, so it must be something else sir. I can’t help you if you don’t know what you have.” “What? No choke” I said. “ Let me see my options” With a half frown he turns the monitor slightly so, stretching over the counter,  I can see it. I look at it, then say to him after placing my elbow on the counter and my chin in my hand. “Do you even know what a choke is, there Mr expert parts man? Because you are not likely to find it in the cooling section next to thermostat and upper radiator hose. Next person who comes in try looking under fuel.” As I was leaving he called out to me, “Don’t you need that part?” to which I responded from the front door so all in the store heard, “Naw, thanks anyway. I’ll go find a store where the parts guy knows the difference between the radiator and a carburetor. Besides, when it's all said and done you probably won't be able to find it and say it's a dealre item anyway.”

Which......turns out it was.

Not all Part's People are created equal!

I have worked on or owned a few Odd Ball cars. My 1956 Packer has a straight line 327 6 cylinder and my 1968 Cobra Mustang had a 427 Medium Riser . No, the 327 is not a Chevy V 8, it is a Packer in line 6! Who made Packer, Well Packer did! Who owned Packer, I am guessing Mr Packer!

Or I need pistons for a Ford 427 .30 over please " That is a Chevy engine, you have a Chevy engine in your Mustang? No, I have a 427 in the Mustang "OH you must have a 428 engine". No, it is a 427 Ford Medium Riser. "Ford made 390, 428 and 429, no 427's sir" No, it is a FORD 427! "Well, it cannot be a 427, unless it is a Chevy Engine"! Give me the dam TRW book, look right here, see 427 Ford You Dumb %$#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And this was at a Speed Shop?

Guess what blew my mind the first time I was asked if the car was Automatic or a Stick when I was ordering a front fender?

Hardest thing to order, a bolt, easier to order a whole Engine than the bolt for the motor mount.Big Smile

Time to hang some more doors.

Jeff, Lol. Unlike most young people I know how to do that timing stuff, I advanced it in that 90. The 1994 mustang I have now has both a computer with the plug-in and a distributor cap/coil. Might be intresting if I try to tweak it, since I don't know how the computer would handle andvanced timing.

I don't know about the 94 Mustang but on father's 92 Ford Lariat the manual says to set the distributor at TDC (top dead center). The computer automatically retards the setting by 2 degrees.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe just an order of Raisin Bread toast with lots of real butter and a cup of dark roast in a R&GV RR mug please.

Currently here here in the Finger lakes it is 59°F with a high of 58°F expected.....  Well that is what the weather people now say!

I have been laughing with you guys on the "modern" Auto Parts stores.  I remember as a high school kid in the very early 60's going into Finn's Auto Parts in Canandaigua looking for a new fuel pump for a 1936 Ford pickup truck my cousin and I decided to get running.  We had spent all summer doing this and that on it.  It had been sitting out back of the barn for for close to 20 years.  Walked in, stood at the counter for a bit.  One of the guys w*rking there came over and we told him what we figured we needed.  He said, "Your most probably right. Fuel pumps don't like sittin' around for 20 years or so.  Hauled out a big book and started to leaf through the section on trucks.  He looked at us and asked, "That would be the 60hp flat head V8?"  We said "yep".  He looked a bit more and said, "Well, I can get you one".  Then he quoted us a price that was about 2 years allowance for both of us..........  Never did get the fuel pump for it!  "Ah, the good old days which are no more, and never were....."

Best get to w*rk on the many items in the "Must DO" list today!

Morning guys. Stopping in before I do some more work on the cars.

Re: parts people; a few weeks ago I went into O'rielies to pick up an AC condesor / fan conrol relay box for a 1990 mustang with a 2.3l. When I get there they have just the relay for the fan, not the thing I was looking for. The lady at the counter gives up after a few minutes of looking. Next lady tries to help and I get her to follow me to the car and pull the relay box out. She asks if I don't mean a Mazda, which I calmy open the hood and point at the ford emblem on the intake. Get inside and after a few mintues of looking through the computer she gives up. I managed to find it in the computer after a couple of minutes. Unfortunately that box went bad, and I hope they honor their warranty on it.

Ken, Never heard of heat shrinking in that way before.

I'm just going to repaint the new door since it's black, but I may have to mist the paint over so it doesn't look too out of place. Evnetually I will get the whole car repainted, but not for a few years.

Jeff, I'm probably just going to leave the engine stuff the way it is for now. I'm just going to work on making it street legal (no exhaust after the cats) and handle better.

Ken- Its PACKARD. In the twentys thru the 40's one of the FINEST cars made.

I teased a new /young partsman by asking for a water pump for a 68 Corvair.  I was a auto parts counterman for over 35 years and remember some awfully dumb customers. One man installed an  a/c compressor and complained it wasn't cooling.  He had NOT put in any freon. Thought it made its own.  lol.

Afternoon guys,

Boy after all this talk of "skilled-behind-the-parts-counter-people", I certainly hope the folks at KIA dealership know what they are doing with my Sedona! Of course the service writter manager said "oh, I'm sure we can fix it pretty quickly for you" when I asked about a loaner car if it was gonna take more than a day or two. MIND YOU, he doesn't YET know what is wrong with it,,,only my description that the check engine light is on and it won't go more than 10 miles per hour and the vehicle hadn't been towed there yet so he CERTAINLY couldn't have dioagnostic-ed it yet!!. UNLESS that is some "standard malfunction fuction" that he already knows about, I doubt it'll easily be back in my driveway tomorrow. It took 2 days to fix the high pressure power steering hose cuz, well, "we don't keep that kind of part in routine stock here".

I am NOT a HAPPY CAMPER. If it does this at less than 50k miles, what's it gonna do at 100k miles or less????? when it is off warrantee??? I bought a newer vehicle to get away from repair problems!!!

Cat as in catalytic converter? Mine doesn't have any of those and I seriously doubt that it ever did. If I remember correctly vehicles rated for 3/4 ton or heavier didn't come with them unless it was specifically required by the laws of the state they were going to.

An RBC please and thank you - break time.

Jeff - IIRC, way back in the '86-'87 era they started with the cats and unleaded on all 50 states gas powered cars including all larger trucks and vans. We had an '86 BBC Suburban that was still on regular leaded and it was one of the very last ones. Our '88 Dually crew cab did have the converter and I remember that because the cat clogged, turned white hot and fell off the exhaust on a hill in Pennsylvania the first year we had it (ok it might have had some help falling off).

G - don't know about the Sedona, but we've had three Festivas (built by Kia for Ford) and they all ran happily past 150k (still have two of them).

Break time's over - back to the shop it is for me.  J.R.

Filet mignon, Asparagus Spears, buttered garlic noodles and crescent rolls, please. At least that is what we are having for Dinner. No Pizza for us tonight. The good stuff only thank you very much!

Quick and dirty answer on the KIA ia that a throttle body sensor has failed. Will know more tomorrow. ONly 1 Kia service tech on duty as the other one injured his thumb last week, but expects to get it all fixed tomorrow. WE shall see what we shall see when we shall see it.

First he apparently injured his thumb last week and was out last week as well.

Second if this IS the problem..won't know til tomorrow, if it is "simple and common" how come Iv'e never experienced it before? How come I've never heard of it before?

Other sensors for other things, yes, but this? Dunno. THat is why the mechanics get paid the big bucks. ANd I am not one. at least not these new fangled computerized sensor ridden thing-a-ma-jigs these days.

I think it's a conspiracy to get your money...put sensors in odd places that will fail and get money...like lets put in a radio in the cars now you have to pay for every month or yearly to listen to....

And now I guess regular Broadcast TV wants money out of cable subscribers like the cable channels get...or don't get and get eliminated form the lineup yet the cable tv cost still goes up with missing channels....

Maybe we should boycott spending on everything, sink us into a great depression again and get it over with.

SoapBox over ....for now

Barry - Glad it wasn't more serious than it was. If you're like me what's one more bitter pill to swallow?

G - The complication won't get any better over time, but most of the sensors work just about forever. Problem is when they do pack up, there is no taking it apart to fix it at the repair shops. I got a chuckle out of Rays' story about the 36 Ford fuel pump for the same reason. Back when it was new, you bought a kit with a new diaphram and spring, disassembled the pump, cleaned it and reassembled it and tada - fuel! Now one must replace the fuel pump as it is either electric or crimped together so it won't come apart. The price of progress? No, it think it's all a plot to relieve us of more money and set things up so only the dealers or larger repair places can w..k on these vehicles.

No,no please put the soapbox away. It's been a long day and I'm just here for a coffee for the trip home. Catch y'all later.   J.R.

Hey guys.

The Parts counter- Oh boy is that an experience for me. Last winter I installed 2 new washer solvent pumps on my Jeep Cherokee. THREE DAYS TO GET TWO STINKIN WASHER SOLVENT PUMPS. First two we got, one went in fine, but the other one had a hole in it. Looked like someone took it home and tried to install it with zero success. Had to order a new one and took two days, my dad and I wound up going across the street and got the pump that afternoon. Couldn't drive my Jeep because I had to take the whole fender well apart. This summer I had to put a new muffler and tail pipe on my Jeep. (No muffler, sounded cool but still....Whistling) Cost me one hundred dollars in parts and still had to go to Ace and buy exhaust clamps. Nearly cost me 2 hundred. Now when I went to Stroller Case IH one hundred dollars and I had everything I needed. Someone tells me how that works out? I had one hundred dollars in ignition system overhaul parts for a 52 farmall, but I spent 100 on a tailpipe and muffler on a 98 Jeep.

Then there's the dealer parts that you HAVE to get from the dealer. IE Polaris. I had to get a new bearing for my quad and that was 17 bucks for a no more than 10 dollars anywhere else. But no one else had Polaris in there computer, so Lissy's had me by the chest hairs on that one. When I asked how much a brake caliper cost, 220 dollars. YIKES. When I said that would have to wait, they hung up on me.

Whoops, sorry didn't mean to get on the soapbox. SoapBox

Hey guys

Been working on the 90 getting it ready for sale. Got the AC and fan to work by installing a new harness. Apparently my relay box still works, so I saved a trip to Orielys for a warranty repair..Also pulled the 8.8 3.73 rear end out of the 90. The previous owner said he put in a 3.73, but I didn't take his word for it after seeing some of the ways he did stuff (tieing wires together and wrapping them in tape is not the way to connect wires, solder or connector; and he worked on computers for a living).

I had a bit of fun trying to locate a radio antennae cable for the car though. Apparently all the stores have entire assemblies (mast, base plate, and cable) but I needed just the cable. What's up with that? The other one got stuck in the base plate and broke when I was trying to take the fender off to hit a dent from the inside

Galaxy, That's the reason why almost everyone in my family buys older used cars. Many of the locations for filters and stuff are in tricky places. Having to rebuild just offers opurtunities to upgrade. My 94 has 210K and the 90 has 180 or 280K (prevoius onwer said it rolled over once, dunno if it rolled over on the guy before him). I knew the 94 had 210K, but those engines and trannys can hold up til 400-500K pretty easily (fathers 88 got to 445K and 16 years before it started to have issues. That car spent it's first 5 years on the Autobahn, was used for drag racing, and cross-country trips too.

I said almost everyone because my mom bought a 2010 Edge to replace her 2003 Expedition with 140K miles(only thing wrong with it was the A/C wouldn't go towards the back, me had my dad said we'd fix it but she wanted a new car; and the dent in the rear door and side from when she backed into the carport, then into the maibox, which is across the street). She got the big warrany which IIRC, was something like 8 years or 140K. Only problem with the edge so far is it doesn't come clay-bared from the factory.

Jeff, Yup. Cats = catalytic converters. Mine has them, and they are staying on until I get a set of longtube headers.

Barry, Glad you're alright.

Teen steam, can you get some of those parts from a junkyard?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Junkyard. Ooh, there's my favorite stompin grounds. You can find just about everything in a good junkyard.

There was one in Jacksonville that had aNAVY S-3 Viking jet parked right in front. It was a surplus yard next to the NAS station, that sold all types of neat stuff (from P-38 can openers, to that Viking)

Unfortunately, they have closed their doors to the general public. Now, it's open only to companies that could use the muscle of an M-35 or a simaler piece of equipment (i.e. construction and mining)

But, you can build a car from the ground up with junkyard parts if you wanted to.

Of course, I would keep to brand new stuff, with safety-related parts (brakes, for example).

Evening all. Sorry I haven't been in. Been kinda a frenzy around here...

The weekend was busy. We worked on my Eagle Project all day Saturday, from 8-5. We got the entire stage platforms built, began painting, and began building the soffit. We will be working again Friday and Saturday, and we will begin painting, staining the stage, and finish (and then paint) the soffit.

Then yesterday morning, my Grandpa died. He had been in the hospital for a week, and was supposedly doing pretty good, and was due to get out either today or tomorrow. However, things apparently took a turn for the worse, and that was the end.
He had dimensia (sp?), so was not even coherent for the past two years. He didn't even know who I was, and barely even knew my mom.
He will be missed. Please keep his soul in your prayers. Angel

The wake is on Wednesday, and the funeral on Thursday, so I'll be missing school. I'm trying to coordinate all tests/quizzes/labs with my teachers, so that might be a little hairy.

Well, I gotta go. I might be able to hang around for a while, though.

Yeah, I'll agree with you there, I'm building a 1990 Jeep Cherokee into a trail truck as cheap as I can. So junkyard rummages galore.

Packers- Probably, but wouldn't fit right. I have a 1990 Jeep in the back yard right now but the muffler was almost rusted through. Still gonna cut it off for performance and that cool factor. Cool

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!
