UP seeks 3% royalty on use of their logos.

Who cares? If you model the UP, here's your favorite railroad wanting you to pay to model them. Who in their right mind would pay for such a thing? Let them charge whatever they want. It's their name, it's their logo, it's their trademark. It belongs to them, and you need permission from them to use it for your own or for anyone else's profit. If you made a home movie of your layout and put the "Pentrex" name on it and try to market the thing, you'd be slapped with lawsuits before you made the second dub. If I produced a bunch of V&O hoppers and sold them, I'll bet Mr. McClelland wouldn't be too happy with me. Yes, if these companies were smart, they'd realize that we do them a small service by representing them in our own way, but they don't care. UP should take a page from John Deere, Coca-Cola, and the USPS in having companies produce items, but they won't.

And remember, this is nothing new to our industry..................Brach's Candy.............United Parcel Service...............

An article in todays Chicago Tribune (6/27) outlines UP plan to demand a 3% royalty on the use of their name. It also includes the Fallen Flags of : WP, T&P, C&NW, M-K-T, Cotton Belt and SP.
