Todd, Garry and Rob Thank you for the kind words about Tiff. I won't say she was her old self today, but she did much better. I never saw her have any problem with walking, maybe the dog food will help. I am surprised she is having problems with her rear legs. When she was younger, say up to 10 years old she use to do what I called the Pogo Go dances. I use to come in from work through the garage. I could see her head bouncing up and down looking out the kitchen to garage door window waiting for me.Big Smile When I got in, she jump into my arms, then down, then up again! Never failed to put a smile on my faces.Approve

Train Front  You ever start a small project and you think while I am at it? What start out as fixing a section of flex track so the RSD 15 would make it around the A Line ( Joiner had been shoved under a tie causing the rail to stick out 1/32 of a inch) whined up being a good sizes make over. Pulled up 15 feet of the main, and sat it back 8 inches so I could install 24" turns. Pulled 3 switches and moved them, then added 2 more switches. There will be two 15 foot passing spur for the A line. Now I have a places to put my Passenger Station and the covered platform I was making out of match sticks.

I lost interest due to the fact there was no good places to put it. I might work on it yet tonight.

Worked on the bench for 5 hours today. Finally ran out of steam. Only down side is I did not get feeders in. Did the quarter test with out the feeders and it failed. No running trains tonight.

I did learn a new trick to help lay straight track straight! Took a yard stick, and drilled holes on both ends. Measured how far the ends where from the edge of the bench, then tacked it down with rail spikes. Held the flex track against the yard stick and nailed it down.

 Thanks for your time.

Here's a update shot of the MRL 3-bay hopper.  I still have a ways to go!!!  I have to dull the white letters, fix some of the white letters, add some rust and grime.  This was done in about 4 hours.   I still have a few days more to do.

I think the car will look 100% better once I start the weathering process.

Jeffrey, I hope UPS gets your parts to you soon, or they be like the USPS..never know when somehting will arrive. It may be heavy enough that it needs specail attention??? Where does tracking say it is??? Waiting on the delivery of something can be anxiety producing can't it???

According to UPS it should arrive tomorrow.

Good morning,

What follows is a rant   SoapBox

You know, the US Post Office is usually a fairly efficient machine. However, how is it that 3 items mailed USPS last week from the same PO {Point of Origin} 45 mins drive away and about 30 miles away can all arrive at different times? {A stamp being cheaper than time/gas}. One was a card and two were checks from my other half's part-part-time job {1-3 days a month}, one being a paycheck and the other being a reimbursement check for something we bought on behalf of/for the boss.

Item #2 was mailed last Tues and Arrived last Wed {the card}.  Item #3 was mailed last Wed. and Arrived last Fri. {the paycheck}.  But Item #1 was mailed last MONDAY and did not arrive here until yesterday/Sat. {being the reimbursement check}. We are so tight on money this month that we told the boss we would need the "front money" for the purchase...which they mailed out Mon. We "fronted" the money on TUes, expecting their check to arrive Tues or Wed as it went out in Mon 11 AM pickup, but never got here till SAt.!! WE managed to front the money and nto go totally broke,so we managed, I guess. But really!

SoapBox     rant over.

Well.

Jeffrey, I hope UPS gets your parts to you soon, or they be like the USPS..never know when somehting will arrive. It may be heavy enough that it needs specail attention??? Where does tracking say it is??? Waiting on the delivery of something can be anxiety producing can't it???

Chloe just informed me that Ulrich finished the last available RBF until more RB is delivered to the diner. Hope it was good, Ulrich. I'll have lemonade, please.

What's this, Todd? .... You will be attending pot luck supper tonite..... Oh, boy.... Chloe said the diner will have prime rib this evening. I'll take your share with mone before Barry finds out.

OK .....  Zan ... Time to lay down a new law at Casa del Troll. Any wars will be conducted elsewhere. How's that for an idea? Meanwhile, model railroading is great for sanity breaks. Believe me. I know.

Robby ... Sounds like you and your better half have staked out your respective territories very well.

Ken ... That's a beautiful dog. Sorry to hear about the dog's health situation. .... Glad you have time to work on the locos.

Barry ....  You'd better tidy up that layout if you're losing hoppers. ... Look at it this way. If you had a garden railroad you could have grass hoppers! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff .... You're moving right along its ounds with the layout changes.

So where are all of those MIA's .... I'm delighted Ulrich is back, but there are others.

On the layout, I'm excited because I ran a locomotive on all tracks in the Union Station complex for the first time. ... Pleased to say it was perfect. ... No dead spots. No derailments. Perfect.

Good morning. It's 83 and sunny. The high today will be 99 with a heat index of 108 and there's a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

I got started yesterday on spreading the joint compound around on the the layout extension. Today I'll do a bit more. The real fun is going to be filling in the gap between the track and Ezra's Exxon. That's pretty close in there.

Sir Madog
Watched "Das Boot" (director´s cut) yesterday night. I have seen quite a number of times now, but it still makes me shiver.

I had seen the theatrical cut of 'Das boot' several times but when I saw the directors cut it was like watching another movie. Incredible how much they had cut out for the theatrical version.

 Good Afternoon,

a dull, hot and humid day - makes me feel drowsy. Maybe I need a RBF to perk me up a little, Chloe, would you be so kind? Thank you.

Watched "Das Boot" (director´s cut) yesterday night. I have seen the film quite a number of times now, but it still makes me shiver. No plans for the rest of the day, other than searching the web for job opportunities in the US or Canada.

You all have a good one!

Good Morning. Just coffee thank you. I'm getting a late start because I found myself in the monthly moaning thread over LHS prices. Nope, no rant or nasties, just a memory of a Christmas past.

Anyway, today, though I should be preparing for Church especially since they are having an after Church Pot Luck!!!, I am instead preparing to go out and do some more work on Mom's house. I usually do a lot of praying there anyway so I don't think the Big Guy will mind. Then, we must go see Mom again and do some of the odds and ends that she needs as she gets settled back into her apartment and yet another reason for me to not get to spend time on the remodel project so that everyone can say (speaking in a voice similar to that of Chumly(sp) on the old Tennessee Tuxedo cartoo) "gee.... It sure does take you a long time to do something. Don't you think you should get someone who knows what they are doing? You‘ll never get this thing done at the rate you're going" To which I fight the primal urge to kill. Knowing the prison sentence would really put a slowdown on the completion. But still........Angry

Duck tape conducts electricity huh? Well, that explains the failed electro magnet from my youth.Whistling

Zan- Well, aside from the war and the problems with the plans, at least you're getting to work on the layout.

Ken- Yet some more sad news. I hope for the same as you for Tiff.

Best get going.

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning.  Finally got some rain last night.  Now we will see if anything will grow.

Saturday all five "project" cars came in.  That will give me something to do over the next few weeks.  I hope to start on the MRL project today.  That will take a lot of paint, sanding, etc.....  Also today I have to make some room for the wife's "scrap booking".  She gave me the whole basement, so I guess I can give her some room upstairs Whistling.

Hope everybody has a good Sunday.

Hi--

I ended up at someone's home last night as the person who was supposed to show up for work did not show up--turns out that she was in an accident---hopefully she'll be OK. I'm sorta kinda Sleepy right now.

So I got some stuff done last night on the layout---moved a pile of stuff off the layout so that I can actually SEE what is there--now I need to find some hoppers again---I thought I had enough of them--turns out not so much.Sigh

So, in the effort to make some sense out of my layout I'm going to have to start up the XTraCAD and start working on the layout plans ---- againBanged Head

Flo, I'll have a stack o' pancakes and a large cup of coffee please---I'll be at the RC for a bit DinnerWhistling

Good mourning Model Rail Roaders!  Flo, big Dew again, and I will have some egg's sunny side up.

Train Front   All most have another engine up and running from the RIP track. When this one is cleared, I will have cleared 7 in the last two weeks.

One I am working on is a Athearn RTR SD 50. Took it apart a year or so ago to do the Athearn tune up. I may not have the brushes set right, the motor now makes a racket. If you would not mind read the posting I made on the main page. Hopping the motor just needs some break in time. It run's well, but making a metal to metal sound.

I have a RSD 15 that I finally found the spot it does not like on the main. If I watched, it would not derail. Been going on for a couple of years now.Yesterday it started derailing ever time it hit the spot so I now know what to fix. Big Smile  Funny how only one engine did not like that spot, but 20 others have no problems with it.

Floor Wars  I have some DP Latex self leveling compound. I don't like the fact I can only apply it 1/4 thick and it takes 6 hours to dry. But, I need to get something done. We have been walking on the Luna for 2 weeks now (just laying there) and none of it has cracked. So if Sue can stand the smell (she won't) I can start to get this darn thing done.

The Girls  It not looking good for Tiff.

She is all most 16 years old. She had been doing fine till the last two weeks. She is getting to the point where her rear legs just collapses on her. We are trying dog food with Glucosamine in it and see if that helps. She does not seem to be in any pain and still enjoys here favorite past time eating. But, at her age, we know it is only a matter of time. I hope when it is her time, she passes in her sleep. I sure don't want to take her to the vet to have her put down.

Hello folks!

I'll have a caffeine free Dr Pepper, please.

It's been another strange week here at Casa del Troll.  On the family war front, I'm still trying to stay under cover, since wife, daughter, and daughter's b/f are still going at it...I don't think this is going to end well. Sad   I do not know if the stress of that is contributing, but I've had serious sleep issues this week...constantly tired, but when I go to bed I can't sleep. Sleepy  Last night, I spent the evening on the front porch...something I used to do most summer evenings, but with the medical issues I developed over the winter, it's beeen something I've not been able to enjoy until now. Smile

On the train front, this week I got started on the under the table wiring...mounting terminal blocks and such.  I've already been through 2 configurations, and now I've found out my plans for controlling the Unitrack turnouts is seriously flawed. Sigh  Configuration 3 is on hold until I settle on what I'm going to do for those turnouts.

Tomorrow's task is to attempt to recover a friend's daughter's severely virus laden PC.  Wish me luck! Banged Head

Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.

"Oooh...ahhhh...that's how this all starts...but then there's running...and screaming..."

Sir Madog

but as of December 2009, you now can enjoy this:

OOOOCCH--that first one don't look too good--good grief!!Shock

Now THAT is more like it. When I went with my father to his former stomping grounds--which was the village of Mulde---we went all over the place on just that train. I keep thinking one of these 'years'----I just may go there again---Whistling

Well---so far so good---did not get weird phone calls about strange goings on so I'm happy there. We are finally getting a good 1.5" of rain for us'uns---after about 6 weeks of nuthin'

Todd: I'm looking at her and wondering how could she be as big as all that? ----watch it--she'll give you looks---where are my treats?

Chloe, I'll have a great big heaping helping of Lasagna and pork sammiches please---I'll be at the corner booth for a bit here-

Evenin' folks!

Yes Flo, I know I'm late, spent the day out at the museum doing mostly odds and ends of stuff.  W*rked the concession stand in the morning and then was a greeter/safety person at the exchange point from the trolley to the train and vice versa.......   So I'll have a couple of the BBQed Lamb Chops and a garden salad with a cup of decaf if you would be so kind.

Good day out at the museum, with a large crowd and lots of happy visitors.  The crowd was steady right up to 4PM, an hour before closing.  Tomorrow may see a thunderstorm or two which shuts down the operation.  Hopefully we will be able to run most of the time.   I have to back out there at 9AM, so I will be heading to Zzz land early again tonight.

Later!

Hey guys, I learnt something today. If your applying dullcote to a model, buy a touch-up paint gun. not an expensive Sata one, but something cheap, like what you can get at pep boys. I've been having trouble with dullcote and my airbrush, and I got this from my dad, its cheap, and easy to clean. just run some reducer through it and it cleans the dullcote right out. Nice spray pattern and covers a model good. I'll have the blue plate special again. Thanks.

crud, tops, well, heres my debit card, only about 3 hundred on it, so please go easy.

Good evening gents, it has been a while since I hopped off the train and stopped by the Diner. MRR was going great on the layout until we headed out west for our 50th wedding anniversary. Took over 900 photos as we traveled by Amtrak from MA to CHI to Denver Union Station via Lake Shore Ltd and California Zephyr. From there we rented a car and went to South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado visiting all the National Parks. We were gone the month of May. We hit white outs in Montana, stampeded on ST89 by 10,000 sheep being herded straight down the highway. Saw Buffalo, Grizzly ( 20 feet from car) Black beer, Antelope, Elk but no wolves. We were nearly killed on I-84 in Utah when we came around a corner and were faced with a big dead Elk in our lane, a semi on our right, and Utah drivers doing 90 right on my butt. I was doing the limit at 75 and if it had not been for a very good Semi driver who saw what I was facing and pulled as far as he could to the right to barely give me room to miss the Elk's head by millimeters. We nearly were stranded in the Wasatch mountains when we hit a snowstorm high up in the range. The snow was 6" deep and as we turned a corner the road was closed with gate and no previous warning of such. We had to backtrack 18 miles in the storm.I guess this is what they mean by " Springtime in the Rockies" ( good Lord it was only 4 weeks from SUMMER!!!! )

Then after we got home, I nearly had the HD jar empty when I tokk a hard jar on the lawn tractor which in turn caused me to have sciatic nerve damage for the first time in my life and hopefully the LAST. This is the worst pain that I have ever experienced by FAR. So while I was not able to walk 5 steps or do practically anything other than sit of lie on my side, I was pulling up staples from the hardwood floor and received a wood burn/blister on my left elbow. No big deal, I cleaned the wound and it healed over nicely, or so I thought! Two days later my entire arm was badly swollen and red...yup..Cellulitis!! So now it was down to the hospital for IV drip every day for 6 days to knock the staph infection out.

In the meantime, the sciatic pain was not getting better, so they decided to put me on the "rack", you know, that 15th century device that stretches you two times your body length? Actually, it is very hi-tech now and it appears that it will help as it increases the space between the lumbars which in turn increases the space for the sciatic nerves which right now are somehow pinched. Of course the X-rays indicated that I had normal degenerative arthritis for a 71 year old, no surprise here.

The lessons learned here are:

  1. get a seat for your lawn tractor that has springs so that your tail bone doesn't become the shock absorber !!!
  2. Clean wounds RIGHT AWAY

Do more Model Railroading and throw the *** HD jar out the window.

Jeff I sent you an email.

Duck tape conducts electricity; yes I have duck tape it’s made here in Cleveland by the Duck Corporation they make tape, boxes, and other stuff.

I finished up in the layout room sorting and storing stuff under the layout, now I can get to work laying track in the new room.  I still have some gremlins to take care of in the main train room.  I finished layout work for some water slide decals my neighbor wanted Elsinore Brewery decals for a couple 50’ box cars and a couple three dome tankers.

I went to Lowe's for a roll of wire. I came back with 2 one gallon buckets of Rapid Coat joint compound, a 1/2 pint of paint I got for 50 cents, 2 plastic putty knives, 2 25 ft rolls of 16 gauge primary wire (1 green, 1 white), 1 50 ft root of 18 gauge speaker wire, 2 packs of 25 coaxial clamps and a 5 pack of Pull-Twist metal cutting disks for the Dremel. Oh, and mustn't forget the bottle of Mountain Dew.

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

Morning all,

Haven't been in lately as don't have much to say, my life is currently boring, really. Now watch me write a book.

I finally got the referral to the Center for Pain Relief for my back. The CPR called to schedule an appt. for me teh 23 of September. I won;t get drugs then to help, but will be "evaluated". I will have to go see the regular Dr. to get more pain meds this mon, tues or wed a s I will be out.

Dental metal frame work fitting went fine, but I think the dentist adjusted it too tight...he may have to loosen it up after they apply the plastic for the teeth, sorry, acrylic. THen next will come the wax teeth for a fitting. The only thing I hate aobut the partial or a new tooth added to it is that I can taste the acrylic, which makes me want to gag. When I get the final copy they will have to sit in mouthwash for at least a week to let teh acrylic residue leach out so to speak.... They also filed off some of the old partial that was getting caught on the soft back palate that was gaging me on that partial. THe new partial has no material after the second bicupid.

On the Trains front, Sept. 4th is only two weeks away! Steamtown will be having Railfest 2010, and naturally we will be there! They will run #2317 Pacific for her last two days before her 1,374 day teardown. #3254 Mike should be running too. Or at least that is the plan according to the fireman for 2317 {who was playing conductor on the "Scranton Local Yard Express"  pulled by a GP9 ride}  when we last visited Steamtown. They will have an excusion pulled by a vintage diesel. They have been repainting a set of F3's for Lackawanna Railroad in the pretty gray/marroon/yellow paint all getting purtified and everything. We saw them working on them when we were there last getting the purtification done. SHArp lookin locos! Not sure what else RR or who else RR will be there. Steamtown is also doing asbestos abatement on all their static steam engines. Dunno if they will be back out front or not for RailFest or not yet. They are hoping to, but they have them all pulled in back to get the job done. We were shocked last time to pull in and see NO steamers on static display out front! Railfest 2010 is Sept 4th and 5th for those who want to make the trek to Steamtown for the event. WEll worth it! The excursion is only Sat. the 4th though. Probably sold out already. But there will be lots of visiting RRs with their vintage and modern locos and trains on display with walk throughs and all! They hope to have # 26 running next summer again to help replace 2317 while she gets her rebuild.. Do a Utube vid search for it, it's a small steam yard switcher. But by the looks of the pieces  she was still in on the backshop floor with no flue tubes in her yet, it will likely be teh end of next summer, not the beginning or middle, unless they put her back together on the fast track. SO if you are close enough, or want to take the drive, go for it!

See, now, I wrote a mini book. TOo bad it won't be a best selling novella!  Whistling

Good morning. It's 79 and sunny. The high will be 97 with a heat index of 112 and there's a 20% chance of thunderstorms.

I would think that UPS stumbled somewhere along the way as my steering column didn't come in yesterday. Today I'll be taking it easy. One thing that has to be done is to mark out the area of the layout that will be removed. I have to make an additional support leg for the west side as it will no longer have the support of the front member that at the moment goes all the way across. After the cut is made there will be a 20" gap in that member. The wiring underneath will have to be taken down. Instead of lengthening all the existing wires it will be easier to simply rewire the layout. This will give me the chance to rewire it for DCC operation and do away with all but a few of the blocks and simplify the wiring immensely. Looks like I'll be going to Lowe's for a roll of wire.
