 Good morning.

I see Ulrich made it back in.  You had a lot of people worried.  Its good to hear from you.  Not much planned for me today.  Go by the post office, and maybe start on the next weathering project.

Chris.......Thanks for the comments.  I just ordered five cars from MB Klein, and I hope to get them today or tomorrow.  One of the cars will be a Ex.Penn Central to a Montana Rail Link.  The one that is half blue, and green.  That will be fun to do Whistling.

CN Charlie.........Just (PM me), and let me know if you would like to get the system.   I only used it for two days or so, and then sold the engine (dcc, and it had sound).  Now its doing me no good.

Ray......That is a very nice tribute.  The family will like that.

Hello Ulrich. Nice to see you back here. Sounds like a nasty close call there. I've had one myself so I know pretty much how you feel. I felt much like a wrung out dish rag myself.

Wow... I stop in for a late night shot of 7-Up and some sedation... and I get two surprises: One a wonderful photo by RAY of an awesome tribute. Thumbs UpThumbs Up I think it turned out very well. Bernie looks like quite a character.

Then, who do I see? But our good friend ULRICH!!!! *there needs to be a "HIP HIP HOORAY" smiley-thing...* One prayer answered this week...our buddy is BACK! Like others have said...take it slow and easy, take your meds, do what Petra tells you to, etc., etc., etc.

On THAT note... I bid ULRICH a "guten morgen" and the rest of you's...a good NIGHT. Finally got THAT's stuff done, now 'tis time for some shut-eye before weekly facetime. A good and SAFE day to all!

Sir Madog

"Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"

... but it was close!

Whistling

Hello Ulrich and Petra,   Welcome back  ( to the land of the living )

No Joke Intended.

But so very glad to hear what happened to you is now in the past as you have recovered this much and are at home again.

We were really worried when the wire from your connection went dead.  There were lots of inquiries and many of us e-mailed you to hope to get some good news.   It is wonderful to hear from you again.

Be sure to listen to all the advice from Doctors and Nurses and your good wife Petra as well.  Rest and exercise as directed.  We want you around for a good long time.   Remember that old character in the comics. "Alfred E. Newman" He used to say "What, me worry??"  You should take that as your personal Motto and stop sweating the small stuff.  Handle the worrying that you have been doing and you will heal much faster..    Good luck Buddy.

It will be morning in your part of the world, while I am just heading to bed. I have to work all week-end again this week, and I have much to do on Monday so I will only have Tuesday to myself until next Friday. Oh well Busy Hands are Happy Hands, so they say.

Will try to check back in over the week-end.

Sleep well all, on this side of the POND anyway.   Petra is making breakfast for the old German modeller.

Ulrich .... What a relief to see you! ... Tell Petra "thanks" for looking out for our German buddy! ..

The Chapel Car is available to pray for your recovery from this problem.

I wish, I could get you over here to my hospital (Vanderbilt, Nashville, TN). . They have done miracles on me. August 13, 2007 was when they flew me by 'copter as my heart stopped six times. ... I have heart failure.

Ray ... I really think that is a wonderful memorial for Bernie.

"Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"

... but it was close!

I was released from hospital yesterday evening, after suffering from a severe  heart failure about two weeks ago. I was feeling funny at that time and Petra took me into that dreaded place. When we entered, I just collapsed. Can´t say that I am fine, but I am still around. Need to go really slow - Ray - that´s not a trip down your model railroad Big Smile

Thank you all for your prayers and wishes, must have made Him to rethink my calling in. How many more years? Only He knows, but as I turned just 54 yesterday, I´d like to have a few more years.

I could only skip through the last days´ posts, so please bear with me if I don´t respond individually.

Ray - I am sorry to read about your BIL´s passing.  My Angel go out to the family.

Edit: I don´t think Vinnie and the girls will mind if we reserve a place for Ray´s BIL here in the Diner as well.

Evenin' Folks!

Just a cup of decaf and ........  Oh heck give me a hot fudge sundae as well, Flo!

Got home about 45 minutes ago from the Rochester Chapter NRHS meeting our at the Museum.  We had several rides up and down the track with Lehigh Valley #211 at the lead.  Yep she is back up and running and will be used in service this weekend for Diesel Days.  Then a few of us walked up to the restoration building for a night photo shoot of RG&E # 1941, a 45 tonner almost ready to see service on our RR.  She has been in the shop for several years and has finally had a lot of work done to her this last year.  She will be doing run-bys during the weekend.  I'll post some of the photos from the shoot as soon as I have a chance to sort through them.

I also took several photos as a memorial for my BIL and his love of trains and all kinds of engines and stuff like THAT!  Only 1 proved to be a keeper I think:

I will send it out in print to all his family.  It was shot with only the light coming in the window.  This is on the dining table in the PC Caboose.  I tried to get some on the conductors desk, but had to use my boot flash as the natural light was from the wrong direction.  A couple turned out pretty good but always seemed to have some reflection of the flash on the picture or not completely in focus, etc.  I only had a few minutes to set it up and get the photos.  They were holding up the train's first evening run, and not letting anyone board the caboose until I was done, so I did it as quickly as I could.

John you are always welcome to come for a visit and layout tour!  Heck you are almost a neighbor as you only live about 45 minutes away!  (Here in the Finger lakes we measure distance by time.... As in , "How far is it to Syracuse?  Oh 'bout 45 minutes").  Just let me know when you want to stop by, I would be pleased to show off the Seneca Lake, Ontario, & western RR at most any time.  But do let me know so I will be around.....  I seem to spend about half my life these days either at my son's house or the museum. Big Smile  And BTW, the invite goes out to any of you THAT find yourselves near this part of NYS!

Hope everyone has a great night!

Later!

Ok gang, I gotta ask this question - Have any of you used metal studs as the base of your layout either now or in the past? Reason I am asking, is I have gotten a 'itch' to build a layout and instead of using wood, I was thinking of using shelf brackets and metal wall studs. I saw a article in one of the more recent MRP editions in which a modeler used them to build a shelf layout on. After he laid the studs, he then used 2, 2"x2'x8' to create a 4" base and then laid homasote roadbed and so forth.

John: I believe you can do such a thing. there is a fellow up here that i know who has done just that thing you described. I promised him that i would help him with some work on his layout this week coming--I'll have to remind myself to bring my camera next time---

Any argument carried far enough will end up in Semantics--Hartz's law of rhetoric Emerald. Leemer and Southern The route of the Sceptre Express Barry

Good Evening!

Finally made it in. It seems like it is 9 p.m. by the time I have been getting home this week as I've had a busy errand schedule and then I usually have a little TV time and that is it for the day.

Luckily it is finally warming up here. On Monday the high was 55F and it went down to 40F that night. We actually put the heat on in the house in Tuesday morning. What a crazy place this is, humidex of 105F one week before.

Todd and Chris, I hear you on the doggy room clearing gas erruptions. We used to call Jamie, Master Blaster. Pippa says she just does little 'poots' but she says Robin does 'Robin Ripers'.  Some truth to that actually but he has gotten better since he was a pup. Remembeir we are only talking about little Westies here.

I finally got the lights in the lighthouse hooked up. The flashing light is quite cool. I also hooked up the streetlights but I got lazy and just did them in series. Turns out I didn't have enough power for that as they are rather dim.

Jeff, great news on locating a steering column. Hope the install goes smoothly. Wow, you are really going to town on that layout rebuild! Will you have to do much surgery on the benchwork? I like your plan too. I am partial to "dogbone" type layouts and round the walls but doubt I will ever get the space to do either.

Robby, if you decide to go with a DCC system I might be interested in your EZ command. I have Prodigy Express but am thinking I might want DCC for my N scale layout. I can use the Prodigy for any programming needs. I like the 'Express' as it is very easy to use( I'm definitely not a computer engineer)  and Iike the controller especially as I have it on a 9' cord so I can operate my little layout from all sides. When your layout is as small as mine it helps to be able to run it from different perspectives. I did have to get the power upgraded as the PE has only 1.6 amps but for $25 they will upgrade it to 3.5. I think most systems must be pretty good as most people seem to like what they have.

I share the concern about Ulrich. If someone had his e-mail address we have a friend who is German and could easily compose a message that perhaps his wife could read.

Haven't heard much from Jerry either. Hope he is OK.

Well my hour of free time is up and I have to start getting ready for bed. Pippa had me up 4 times in an hour last night so sleep was cut a little short. She goes out, usually about 4 and then we come back in and go back to bed. Fifteen minutes later she decides she wasn't quite finished so wants out again and again and again. I have to go right outside in the yard with her as her sight and hearing aren't very good anymore. I usually just carry her out and in.

You can always come down to west-central Louisiana and look at the Midland Gulf subdivision of the L&A Railway.

Jeff ..... Is the offer good for everybody?

It's open to all comers. I just need to know when someone is coming so I can prepare.

Does anyone here have any German friends who could help track down Ulrich?

JP ... Good to see you.

We (Gus, Dan. and I)  had our layout tour today. Went well. It was a group of 24 people from historical society in this area. We had sub-groups of 8 people each roating between our houses.  ...... Only problem was with Dan who thought it would be good to have a "hands on" demonstration with guests running trains on his UP layout (HO). Bad idea. Derailments galore. ..... Gus had his IC layout (HO) running fine. He also ran his old Lionel trains including a train built in th 1930's. .... On my layout, I was operating the steel mill. On the mainline, I had a passenger train with a Burlington 4-8-2 with 7 heavyweight cars. The mainline freight train had the SD24's. I had no derailments. I'm glad Mr. Murphy remained at Dan's layout today.

Ray, I might be doing a bridge removal permit in your area. Genesee River CSX swing bridge.

Would THAT be the Hojack Swing Bridge?  I know there has been some major disagreements with preservationists and the City of Rochester for many years over what to do with her.  It would be sad to see her removed, but i also realize not every structure should be preserved.......

If you are available and if it could be arranged, I would like to get together with you when you come this way.  I'll give you the 50¢ tour of the SLOW......

I know what you mean, My dog Duke got too-well cared for when my sister was a baby, she would toddle over to Duke's empty bowl and fill it all the way up with dog food. We had to go through 50 lbs of kibble in a week. Thankfully Duke has lost some weight now.

Well gang, I am off now.

Take care!

Hi diners!

I haven't been in lately as I really don;t have anything much to say, unlike normal, LOL.

Have  a dental appointment tomorrow the first of 5 fridays of appointments. The Appt. is for a fitting of the metal framework for a new upper partial. I hope it fits well and they didn't add material behind the upper left bicuspid that on the old partial always presses into my soft palate and causes me to gag on the partial. They requested no material there, but you never know what the lab reads, doesn't read, or what they will do. ANd the lab was on vacation last week. So returning from vacation and trying to get back into the groove of work...oh sorry guys there's that pesky 4 letter word. We shall see.

I do need to get back to see my regular Dr. also, as I will need more pain meds for my back. Still haven't got the referral from the neurosurgeon to the Center for Pain Relief yet, either. Maybe my reg Dr.s office can light a fire under someone that I can't do. By the time I get into the CPR, it will be a year since I first sought treatment for my back. The arthritis certainly hasn't improved. And my other half is starting to get tired of hearing aobut my back hurting, even though at times I wobble when standing as the muscles are flexing wildly trying to hold me up. Since i am home most of the time, I am supposed to attend to all the home chores while my other half works. Works well in theory and did well, until my back started giving me so much grief and trouble. Now I get teh "I work all day and then have to come home and do the chores" speach occasionally, followed by a "ANd I don't want to hear about your back hurting" speach. Of course while I was sick on the couch for two weeks ralphing my guts out due to the dead mouse smell, I WAS given a bit of a break on the speaches. ALas.

Well, have a great evening guys!

Special thoughts and prayers for those who need them!

Laugh And Missy is as well. About 5 or 10 pounds too well cared for. We'll find out as she is at the Doctors as we speak finding out just how well cared for.

Well, lasagna please. Not the just meatsauce kind, the kind with all the floor sweepin's. You know mushrooms, green peeppers, etc, and of course beef. Not too runny please and of course Mozzerella, plenty of it and Ricotta. I'll also have a Dr Pepper to wash it down. Gotta get cleaned up for w**k now. Mom's apartment passed the inspection so she should be heading home soon. Maybe Saturday, WHICH, by the way, will destroy my next full day of w**king on her house. (siiiiigh) Always something.

Like Robby said, others get busy and don't stop in the diner for a while, but Ulrich....... I wish I did have his address. I wonder if Petra checks his E-mail. Or does she read English.

EDIT: Ulrich has checked in, or someone has, a week after his last post on the fifth. However has not signed in since the 12th. I just sent him an E-mail.

Things are looking better on the extension on the layout. I have enough of the debris cleared that I can actually see the tracks. And yes, I saw the derailed car against the backdrop. Somebody has some explaining to do!

It's honorable that someone with so many problems serves so many. It makes some of our, mine included, excuses for not serving in some way sound very embarrassing.

But TODD, you're a veteran right? I'd say THAT counts as "serving" in a very big way!Thumbs UpThank you for your service, by the way.

Thanks to all who are praying for/offering thoughts toward Ross. I haven't heard anything since the training session Monday night.  Its the kind of situation where you're really not sure if "no news is good news" or not.

In a related thought, the ULRICH situation continues to be troubling... Does anybody have his snail mail address???

Good afternoon,

Had to be up extra-early (before the Wife) to get to a new elementary school in North Liberty for their first day of school: pictures of kids clinging desperately to Mom or Dad, goofy kid with back pack straps over his face, etc., etc., etc.  Gotta fire-off some w**k e-mails and make at least one phone call yet today on top of other stuff for THAT

TMarsh
I woke up to this horrific smell to which I exclaimed " MISSY! BRENDA! Which one of you is responsible for THAT! Brenda gave me a look of distaste and impending bodily harm, to which I noticed the exact second she too caught whiff.

Heh heh heh. For his size, Rerun has been known to peel paint off the walls... he'll try to knock me out of bed one way or another. If he can't roll, stretch, push, press, and/or kick me out; he'll let loose an SBD burst. However, the look I get from him is one of blame...as-in Rerun blaming ME for emitting the disturbance!!! When the stench hits Kit's little nose, Rerun looks at her in a way saying "Hey Mommy, don't blame ME...it was DADDY!!!"  The fuzzy lad then leaves in disgust at the toxic situation he's created...and wanders out to his tent in the kitchen.

Yes, Rerun has a tent, a kid's camo pattern playhouse. It is well-apportioned with several pillows, cushions, etc. It also usually has a few doggie biscuits stashed in it.

He's not spoiled...just very well cared-for!

ROBBY P: Man, you've been cranking out the masterpieces again lately... Bow

Gotta get back at it, thank you again to you guys for thinking about Ross. I appreciate it, and I know his family, and the guys on the department appreciate it too. Unfortunately, the guys are used to losing a brother to cancer. The previous Chief (Pete Kanakaras) died of cancer in 2008, shortly before I got on the department. I was issued his turnout gear. A Stanwood firefighter lost his battle last year.

Personally, when I go...I want it to be so quick, I end up asking St. Peter "what in the wide wide world of sports just happened???" Smile,Wink, & Grin

Here's hoping for a good, SAFE rest of the day for us all...

Good morning all,

Yes the NMRA clubs must have gotten a bargain on their NCE units.  Now with the Digitrax duplex wireless throttles there is no stopping them.  I went with Digitrax because at the time they were the only ones with knobs on their throttles and the price of the equipment.  Only recently has NCE become competitive with Digitrax (and added throttle knobs).

I believe MB Klein has a NCE starter kit for $150.  It comes with everything you need (it also controls up to three engines), plus I'm looking for something like that.  Nothing to big, just plain and simple.  I do have a Bachman DCC system, but its still in the box.

Here's a couple of shots of the RBOX/CSXT boxcar.

I’ve been running the Digitrax for about 3 years now and love it.  I’ve tried the MRC and the NCE but like the Digitrax the best so far.  The only thing I hate is the Digitrax instructions seem to have been written by an electronics engineer and if you’re not a scientist or electronic engineer you’ll have issues with the manuals.

Same here. I tried the others and went with Digitrax. I guess I must be an electronics engineerLaugh. The manuals were light reading for me and I had no problem comprehending them. I'm a self-taught computer programmer and tech and have been dabbling in electronics for 20+ years. I used to make my own computer circuit boards (for my Apple IIe) back when that was still easy to do. Now the circuits are so tiny I would need a microscope and special tools just to work on them. It's easier and cheaper to just buy a new board.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have egg on a muffin with a slice of the back bacon they have up here in the North, and add a slice of American cheese as well.  Oh!  A cup of your finest dark roast coffee in a R&GV Mug is definitely needed this mornng!

Ulrich, where is Ulrich!?!  I'm starting to get nervous about him again.

Currently 75°F here in the Finger Lakes with a high around 82°F later this afternoon.  Isolated Thunderboomers may be around tonight.

Tonight is the monthly meeting of the Rochester Chapter, National RR Hysterical Society out at the Museum.  We are doing our annual night photography session.  Hopefully it will be of our newly restored ex Rochester Gas & Electric GE 45 Tonner #1941.  I am also planning on setting up a small display in honor of my BIL consisting of a reserved sign my stripped hat, and a photo of him a couple years ago (at his Father's 95th. birthday party.  I'll get a series of photos of it and then put it away.

I too love my Digitrax!  I do agree about the documentation....  just takes a little searching at times to figure it out.  About the only other system I have seen at any of the NMRA members homes is NCE.  Very popular around here as it is manufactured right in Rochester, NY about 50 miles from my house.

Best get a move on, have a lot of things to do. First on the list is to turn on the Air Conditioners before it getts too hot in the house.  better to keep it cool than to have to reduce the temp 10° or so......

Later!

Ulrich, well I hope it’s only internet problems he is having.

My STUFF is in!!!  I ordered the gadgets for the automatic  block detection circuits and the 3 light single LED block lights. I scratch built the signals for about $1.25 each.
