Sunny this morning with a high in the mid 80's and the reletive humility is 90%.
Ken - sounds like a plan. The diluted glue should help. I would use proper floor screws to hold the 1/4" ply down instead of brads which like to pull out. Other than that, the self stick tiles work fine. Try not to bridge the edges of the ply with tile as that will print through and good luck to ya!
Lots to do again in the shop so I'd best get to it. Still have to make and fit two wiring harnesses in addition to the regular stuff (if anything we do here is actually regular). Catch y'all later, J.R.
Finally it's cooled off and we have highs below 100. As of this past week the Knutsville station on my layout had been occupied by a large wolf spider that had been in residence for a couple of years. The station is now vacant and is open for another boarder. The wolf spider died sometime this past week. The last time I recall seeing it alive was about four days ago. Today I'll likely be going out to get a new drive belt for the mower deck of the tractor. I'll see if I can go by the KCS yard in Leesville and get some shots of KCS 3137 on switching duty.

Here's the deal: according to the exterminator friend of mine they only a space about the size of a dime to crawl through as their body will elongate to accomodate them. a rat only needs the space of a quarter to crawl through. They can and will eat or chew their way through many things, but plugging holes with either Great Stuff spray foam, Or better yet using steel wool to plug up holes they wont eat through the steel wool but may still make mince meat out of spray foam.
In the last 2 months we: caught one in a "safety trap", the female cat presented me with one dead mouse, presented my other half with 2 dead mice, and then one night while i was awake not sleeping and up watching TV, I heard banging against the wall in the hall. I turned on the light and she was after a mouse, which she lost in the scuffle when I startled her by turning on the light. My theory is that she managed to injure it enough that it would die a week later after crawling in a corner somewhere in the computer room and died. SO that is 5 dead mousies in 2 months. Mice are not usually a problem until OCt-Nov when they start looking for a warmer winter home, but we obviously have a family of them and a nest somewhere they like. The exterminator set 11 traps out of the way of the cats that has his "special peanut butter" loaded with poison set for them, if they find the traps. hopefully if there are more, they will!!!
Living in a trailer is a wide open invitation to mice as there are plenty of plumbing areas they can squeeze through to get into the place, with out much control. There are about 4 outdoor cats int he neighborhood to help keep the mice population down, but if the nest/they are already in here and dont venture out of their mansion {aka our trailer} it doesnt help. Our indoor cats are a help, but apparnetly cant get them all, or as I said she managed to injure it but not kill it as I helped to let it get away when I turned on the light and startled her at the game of cat-and-mouse.
When it was found it was still mostly mouse and nto much decompositon had taken place,just the strong stench of death. THere are no flies in the house as we use A/c and haven't had any to lay eggs for maggots to eat teh rotting flesh either! SO had it not been found. it would have reeked fora long time and I would litterally ahve had to go stay with my father for awhile as the stench was making me violently ill with vomiting and no appetiete-or rather couldn;t eat with the stench. My ohter half doesn;t smell half of anything, I have a strong nose and a weak stomach, where as my other half has a strong stomach and doesn't as I said, smell half of anything. I can smell what type of laundry soap/dryer sheet weas used on somebody's clothes from 10 feet away, and makes me as nauseus as when one is around a woman in the store who put on too much perfume! WE only use "free and Clear" laundry products...that is free of perfumes and clear of dye so there is no smell to our laundry. WE also use all free and clear or hypoalergenic or sensitive skin products for showering as they all are free of perfumes and often have no dyes in them.
Now only to get the room aired out! the window is open as often as can be {rain will come in it so we have to close it and my other half is concerend at night it could rain in while we not know it being asleep} so only during the day when we are home it is open....a fan might help setting in the window and I will look for a box fan when i go to the dentist later today! Backing soda sprinkled is about the only thing the exterminator advised besides airing out to get rid of the stench. WE COULD open all windows in house and run the 12 in oscillatiing fans to help blow it out, but in this heat, I need my A/c so rest of house gets A/c'd while this room not. This is the first day I find tolerable enough to sit at the computer long enough to type this, though I do have a mask over my face. The cooler weather we are to get today can help aslo.

For those of you trying match the Diesel to the liner.. any line ... we'll its hard. I'm sure there are other colors of the Hiawatha line that are more appealing to the eye. But this is right before/during when U.P. bought the Milwaukee lines. Well thats how I see it / read it. Then U.P. changed their colors to the Freight Yellow.. and then later on to the U.P. Yellow.
BTW. Garry or any others. Don't look to me for riding 'Point' on this one. Todd is blazen the way for DCC. I'm in the back of the pack, riding 'Clean-up'

I agree Chris. Just one of my lines travel a whopping 105 real feet one way, and 120 feet the other way. Its just a straight line to the next station. "Whats the problem I asked myself. It can't be that hard." Blocks? for what? its only running on a straight line. And then the choice, pull in off the mains.. or continue on. I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. theory. Keep It Simple Stupid. I don't deny I'll look for the easiest solution. I also will try my Prodigy DCC.. to see if its really a Plug and Play as it is stated. To both with my setup I really don't see any problem. I have both DC and DCC and originally planned on having both. My two mains are separated by an ElectroFrog, and never plan on throwing the switch... unless I plan on running DC through the whole layout. And if you wanted to do both... a 'Double Throw' switch is all you need to separate the power from DC to DCC. Yes.. a switch when in the vertical position.. neither contact is made. Throw it flat one way.. DC.. back up to neutral.. then the other way.. DCC. Maybe I've got it all wrong. But I see this as a simple layout. And maybe 4 layouts all conected.
J.R. I'm going both ways.. or neither.. I haven't really decided quite yet. I'll do my best to try both, an no I am not planning on running DC on DCC tracks. So much to do to keep me busy until Fall. You remember my first diorama? Well I still have 3 more to make.. lol. And the planning involved in the design of each town/station. Like so many of us..lol. My DC 2-8-8-2 I only paid $65 dollars for off of ebay. It was during the holidays, and no one was around to bid on it. Talk about getting something for a song~

Jim- Well (running thumbs up and down the suspenders) it's like this. When the temps rise and the heat comes on and the ground dries up, the grass doesn't grow as fast. About the time this happens most people, except Jeff who has a little shade cloud following him around, are happy to not have to sweat mowing the lawn as often. In come the weeds. Evil botanical monsters that they are, the have a root system that goes as deep as the place they originated. Sucking at water that the grass can't get to so as you plan to relax on mowing day and enjoy a long cool lemonade, there they are. Waving at you. Weeds. Gotta mow after all.
OH KEN!!!!! I hope to catch you before you start. I'm not sure what you are calling particle board, as some have their names for stuff. If it's the stuff they use under carpet that looks like wood, or paper grindings and is usually a grayish tan, I would agree with Rob and remove it. It is very swellish with water. If it's OSB, the stuff that looks like wood shavings all glued together, then I would be ok with laying underlayment over that. DO NOT use regular plywood or particle board for you underlayment. You should use actual underlayment sheets or stuff called Luan, which they say is not suitable as underlayment, but I have used it and so far, I cant tell the difference, as long as the smooth finished side is up, other than about half the price of underlayment. You may already be using this I may have missed it in you post. Make sure all nails are recessed beneath the surface and use underlayment nails. They are ribbed and won't back out. Or have the best chance not too. Check and double check this. I drag an aluminum level across the floor as a final check and listen for the tink. Fill the nail recesses and the cracks with a latex filler if you choose. They recommend it, but I have had good luck with out doing that if the tile is heavy enough. Also, I recommend that you not rely on the self adhesive backing alone. Use a tile glue any way. If you don't you will have trouble especially if in a high traffic area with the tile coming up if you don‘t. OK, I see J.R. has a differing opinion. He may not have had trouble and I can honestly say I have not either. Of course a flooring guy, my BL, said always use glue, so I only have that to go by really. Years ago I didn't and the tile would come up. Glues have changed now so maybe that is unnecessary. I'm just better safe than sorry. Never heard of using sand. It may work, but I don't think it's something I would do. Good luck and like someone (Ray?) said getting and giving advice over the net can be tricky. Especially if they don't see what is going on or misunderstand what is being said. Good luck again and enjoy that floor. Floor tile ain't what it used to be. They look reeal good now.
Speaking of floor tile I have 4 more rooms to lay myself. That stone look stuff where you grout the lines. It looks surprisingly good!
Speaking of silly things and people who think they're so smart. The other day I had my extension ladder propped up against the house and had a tape measure going from the top rung to the ground. I was up on top of course measuring the ladder and was getting a bit flustered dealing with the wind and the tape slipping off the end of the ladder. About then, Know It All Brenda comes out and asks what I'm doing and I said I need to see if this ladder is tall enough to reach the peak on Mom's house before I pack it all the way out there. She said "why don't you lay the ladder down it'll be easier" I said THAT is why you are a domestic person and I am the one who constructs things. Actually it's quite obvious if you were at all mechanical minded. Seeing as how I want to see if it'll reach a certain height, I need to know how TALL the ladder is, not how LONG. Silly woman.

Thanks for posting the link to the museum in Medina. I hadn't heard of it before, and it looks really interesting. When we make our wine runs to Seneca Lake, we usually go via I79 to I90 to I86 and the same route on the way home. But going back on I90 and stopping in Medina, then on to the museum in North East, Pa to do a little railfanning, then spending the night in Erie sounds real good and very doable in one day. The wife will probably want to spend the evening in the casino in Erie, but that's okay as she indulges my railroad interests (and expenditures). The only downside is that nightmare known as Buffalo, the traffic that is, not the folks.

I noticed some diners participated on my "weather your cows" thread and it's appreciated.
Galaxy ... Your cat & mouse story reminds me. A couple of weeks ago, a stary cat tried to adopt us. The cat reported for duty on our deck at a glass door to the living room. It brought a trophy which was a dead baby bunny rabbit. Then the cat ate almost the entire bunny. It was a bit disgusting to us especially when the cat ate the brains out of the skull. We were about to leave to be out of town a couple of days. After returning from the trip, we learned the cat was adopting a neighbor instead.
I posted a photo in WPF. Now it's a "honey do" day, but nothing major like Ken's project.

A baby bunny in your living room? that sounds as bad as having several mice in one's house. I hope you don't have a problem with a rabbits nest around your house! Mice can reproduce in 18 days of life as they are se xually mature then! Rabbits are teh same way I understand!
It IS gross to watch them consume another animal, and interesting the parts they leave behind {such as the bowels of course} but that is nature's normal way. AS near as we can tell, our female cat has not eaten the mice, just presented to us, as we find no evidence of worms YET. They present for about 3 reasons: 1} to show you you are the "alpha" in charge and "king" - and they are the subservient "beta"; 2} to show you feed them enough; and 3} that they are "giving up" their dinner to you as in #1 and #2. WE are going to the vet soon and see what he thinks about giving her a worming treatment to be sure. When she presented to me I treated her like a queen all day...lots of "pettums" {petting}, lots of "specials" {treats}; let her in and out to the "veranda" -a cage out the LR window to the cover enclosed proch we let them out to -as far as they go outside in this cage...but the "cat door" intimidates her so I opened it for her all day even though she can do it herself if she really wants; and let her do what she wanted-even if we normally scold her. She naturally pranced and preened as a queen too!
TOo bad the cat left you while you were gone for another neighbor...as if you had one bunny, i'm sure there's more most likely! Unless you are into "hossenphfefer"{SP?}!!! {rabbit stew}.
CAts are good to have around for such things...but one thing is important...the FEMALES make the better "mousers" as males will chase and play, but females go in for the kill! { i think with the idea to help feed their babies should they have any...if not all the more for "momma"}.

Garry I must admit, when I saw that thread of weathering cows.. I just didn't even click on it. I thought.. I can't even see my N scale cows. Then after reading the post it all made sense. Most pieces are too shinny, and the colors are too bright and usually do / would look better with a fine wash of something to help detail the lines of people and the sorts. I don't know if I would paint the rear end green but I can see the dirt/mud on hoves and udders... and maybe the tail.. lol. But wow, what a good topic.. it all does make so much sense. Well at least the shine on the pieces.
Rob~! Well I finally got around to finding some Circus trains. Not much, but its been hard to find things. All my stuff keeps getting packed away everytime we have a holiday.. only for me to drag out the stuff that I need... if I can find it!

Galaxy last summer my cats, 6 back then would all catch mice. 13 total for the summer. I finally stopped leaving food outside.. which seemed to attract other animals. I'm sure the cats had a field day, but since then.. no food outside... I haven't seen one mouse this year. Two lizards in the house but thats it.

Well, not much from me. i finished one school reading book, I'll be starting another after lunch. Registration is monday. I'm ready to see everyone but this year is gonna suck even though I have a study hall and two electives. Spanish3 (I will be happy to just get the credit), English3H (Lord God Almighty help me!), Algebra2H (I'll probably look like a deer in the headlights) and chemistryH (my physical science teacher sucked at explaining the chemistry stuff last year, hopefully the teacher this year can explain it).
I haven't done much on the plan, i have another idea for it. And I'll probably have about 60 more before I finally decide on the next step

Nice lot of stuff. I think you'll like the Prodigy once you use it. most of the important instructions are printed right on the back and the device is actually pretty intuitive. I don't have exactly the same but I did get the Prodigy Squared Advanced whatever so I could have a wireless walk around throttle. I have all this stuff so I can keep my hand in with the train budget after the massive agita I created starting up last time. Just need to get my act together and actually restart a layout, no? I think once I get a space created and a w..kbench down it'll go more easily again. I look forward to it all as it is so so easy to just plop down in front of the one eyed hypnotist and do nothing all evening. J.R.

KEITH: Yup yup. The Cheap and Nothing Wasted was falling into some measure of disrepair, the UP passenger runs (CNW partnered with UP on 'em) were running behind. Uncle Pete wasn't happy, so he struck a deal with the Milwaukee. Milwaukee's east-west main was within a few miles of the CNW's, so didn't add a whole lot to the distance. Walthers had a bunch of info on this earlier in the year, in their monthly sales flyers, when they came out with a yellow and gray Milwaukee passenger set (HO). I know UP thought about buying the Milwaukee... the ICC said "uh-uh." So THAT merger fell by the wayside.
The Milwaukee Road was, of course bought up by the SOO Line after most of the east-west line (across Iowa) was abandoned. SOO wanted the north-south line along the Mighty Mississippi River. CP later bought THAT, sold it to I&M Rail Link (subsidiary of Montana Rail Link). I&M became the Iowa, Chicago, and Eastern (ICE), and CP/SOO bought it back! I think it is currently CP, but UP's Dispatcher #12 still calls 'em "the ICE" when they cross HIS tracks at Clinton, Iowa.
ROB: Glad you liked the shot! If not for the blue tarp and modern reflective tape on the pilot, I think it'd be a shot straight out of the 1950s. The B&SV runs on former Ft. Dodge, Des Moines, and Southern tracks. The FtDDM&S was an electric interurban, thus the overhead wire.
Another shot from the B&SV. This is an ex-CGW TR-2 (NW-2 built for cow/calf ops), which became CNW 1003, then B&SV 1003. It is running around the daily excursion train at a place called Fraser. Check out the hapless conductor. He is standing in an absolute downpour!

TODD: Actually, you've got a legitimate point measuring how "tall" the ladder is vs. how "long" it is...since a properly placed ladder should angle away from the wall. Safest way to determine THAT is to stand at the base of the ladder with your arms straight out in front of you. IF your hands can grab the ladder, with the arms straight; then you have a "proper" angle. At least THAT's what they taught me in Firefighter 1 class... Thus, the ladder, while "long" enough to reach the peak, might NOT be "tall" enough when properly (and SAFELY) deployed!!!! There, run THAT by Brenda!

***Keith, sounds like a good plan to me. I sold off 3 vintage Riv. (N) articulateds (Bigboy, Mallet, Challenger) in order to buy the DCC Athearn Bigboy, plus another loco or two (forget which). Was lucky to get great returns on what I sold at that time. Just paid $100 for a new Bach DCC Heavy Mt., so should probably sell some stuff off once again to replace those funds. I'm up to 2 DCC (N) locos now, but the only DCC controller belongs to my wife.

Bad insomnia again last night so pretty tired today. Thinking of going out shopping for a new pistol, this would be a 22 revolver for (inexpensive and less loud) target practice. Also need to restock some other ammo. There are lots of severe thunder storms popping up out there today so not sure I want to bother. Couldn't be...Loving Wife and I were legally seated AND safety-belted in the Rock Island wide-vision caboose. Plus, with how HARD it was raining, there was no way in heck I was gonna dismount and go stompin' around their ROW... I think he was peeved 'cause he was turning into the proverbial "drowned rat."
We first rode the train in Oct. of '03 while celebrating our honeymoon. It rained. We went back for our 1st anniversery, it freakin' POURED! Poor Mr. Conductor/Brakeman also had to dismount and clear some fallen trees from the ROW on the way back to Boone. He was NOT a happy man. In fact, the whole crew THAT day seemed...pissy. Oh well, we paid our money, got the caboose...best seats on the train!
Maybe some year, we can afford to go back. I still wanna ride in the CNW bay window waycar.
I take a break to watch some TV and suddenly we're socked in by thunderstorms. I'm hoping they pass soon but it looks like they want to hang around a while.

Nice photo of the switcher there, but why the blue tarp over the grills? Like that low nose on the CNW, also. I prefer those low-nose diesels, myself. And yeah, THAT conductor looks like he likes that as much as a cat would (maybe!).
Jeff, sorry to hear about your resident guard spider passing. Guess that means you might need to set out a trap or two? I hear you on the break (however brief) in the weather. Now, if Keith would agree to some swaps on the weather, we might all balance things out on the temps, eh? Reading about your encounter with the parts guys made my head spin; hopefully somebody will find a place somewhere that knows which belt you need - and can get it for you soon!
Galaxy - on that story I told about the mouse I/we had in the house, we strongly suspected that the downstairs outside door was the problem. The adjacent side wall (at 90 degrees) had a minor leak if it rained very much, which had led to the foam strip under the door (no bottom frame - maybe due to that aforementioned leak? - just the foam pad against the tile over concrete/inside floor) rotting out, and it was plain ol' concrete outside (under the carport). As you described, plenty o'space for mice to scurry under and get inside come fall (or even in August, when daughter's birthday is). I'd agree with that theory on females (or more specifically, on one male cat that adopted a psychologist I w**ked for during my grad school years. The Dr. discovered a mouse in a side room of his office (in a redone basement area) and brought the cat in; the cat jumped the mouse, and just mostly batted the poor rodent, but never really finished it off. Guess the female of THAT species is deadlier!

Pretty good day - the weather eased up on us some (mostly because the weak 'cool' front moved south of us - and has been drenching Jeff and maybe now Rob, it looks like). I got a two-pack of P2K SP 50' boxcars for almost $20 (shipping included), ordered some Arizona Rock & Mineral ballast and scenic stuff, and (YAY!!) got in a box with the bezel and other parts so my DVD replacement drive now can w**k, as well as not look c****y. Also paid a couple of bills (car payment and student loan payment). Can you tell it's payday? Watching a couple of Geep-7's (undec P2K's), and hoping to snag one of the two over the next few days. Need to get back to the Accurail 41' Wabash steel gondola that I started on earlier in the week, too. And I need to go locate Garry's "weather your cows" article (though on my layout, there'll be more sheep than cows) to see what tips I can pick up there.
I'll be browsing through the article after I finish dinner. On-call tonight, and then tomorrow it's MY weekend (and laundry ).

Thanks! Not sure why they tarped the ALCO... some winterizing perhaps?? The low-nose CNW was built THAT way, it's a second-hand GP-38-2 they picked up in...'91, '92. From the slot on the battery box, I'm thinking it may have come from an eastern road... like B&O (Chessie). I'll have to look THAT one up in my CNW library.
As for the conductor/brakeman, the whole crew THAT day seemed "out of sorts." The conductor conductor (guy taking the tickets) looked like Al from the TV show "Home Improvement," but was about as friendly as an irritated rattlesnake. Our first trip, we rode in the 1920s coach. 2nd year, we sprung the extra bucks for the caboose...our own "private car."
BARRY: I still say Audrey should be allowed to beat the snot out of the twit with her cane, using the good arm, of course! She should also be allowed to shove THAT cane somewhere...of course she'd probably want a new one after...
Looking at a busy weekend...gee, go figure! Tomorrow, I have to find compelling photos at Swisher Fun Days. Then, the BIL is coming over to participate in a car cruise here in Clarence. Part of some Lincoln Highway thing. Loving Wife will be in a cleaning frenzy all day in preparation. I guess we're also feeding the guy. Once he's gone, I'll have to process the pics and bang-out the captions/small article from Fun Days. Sunday, Loving Wife and my Dad will be honored by lunch at Chili's...on Mom's dime. Lucky me, I get to attend too. Loving Wife's birthday was the 3rd, Dad's was...yesterday. Oh yeah, gotta stop at Cedar Ridge Winery and pick up a bottle of their new Iowa corn bourbon... Happy Birthday Dad! So, after the big lunch, we get to scoot back over to Solon so THAT I can turn in my stuff for THAT while Maggie the Creepy Proofreader Girl is there. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, it's supposed to be 90 degrees again then. Good thing I mowed the crab grass, clover, creeping charlie, chickweed, and grass today.

Yeah, I think temp control is the most likely explanation. We have an SW-8 (ex Pfizer) that we're battling with the shutters on right now at the museum. Diesels are funny that way. Too cool and they make massive smoke and don't make any power, once they get hot, it goes the other way in a hurry. With the small load we put on our power at the museum, the biggest problem is making enough heat. An excursion consist might be in the same situation.
Jim - yes indeed, that Datsun does sound just like a fuel dragster. The motor makes north of 1000 hp. The way it's set up now, I doubt that it makes more than 600, but driving the car on the track was still a real hoot. If we do another track day I'll try to get a camera in the car (doubt that I'll get to drive it again though).
Got some of the shelving done so I can start clearing the basement which then allows me to start finishing the new train room (the knee bone's connected to the thigh bone..........) anyone else relate to this kind of slow torture? J.R.
Jim, we have a week and two days until we must go back to school until June. oh joy. you'd reason this year will be easier since last year I had no study hall, and all my classes were honors except for spanish and gym. this year is gonna suck way more
