Good Evening, bucket of lemonade please....and thank-you.
VINCENT: Yeah...I'm pretty sure THAT would be the "as-delivered" paint job for THAT boxcar. Soooooooooo yer probably looking at a 1960s paint scheme. Grunge it up good, slap "lube plates" and maybe a 1970s ACI label on there...and I think it'd be fine for 1980s/early 1990s. It would just look like one THAT never made it to the Clinton (or Cudahy, Wisconsin) car shop for a new paint job. THAT's just my half-a-cent worth of opinionated opinion. Your results may vary greatly!! No, I don't think you ever mentioned the CNW track layer. Any idea where he would've been? Realizing of course THAT at one time, the mighty Ball and Bar could be seen in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, S. Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska...

You're not imagining things about the boxcar question. Shortly after I typed the post and editing the Kato motor rantl I remembered rrpicturesarchives had a frieght car section. Sure enough I found 3 pictures of such cars in the late 70s (all on the BN no less). IMO, ideal strating points for weathing (I've never weathered from a protoype pic before ) I edited that part out when I was messing with the Kato rant. Sorry 'bout that one. Here's the results of my search though:

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Hey folks, finally got a snapshot of the scenery work, although it looks crappy cause of the cell phone's lack of adjustable features. works fine in sunlight, but I needed the flash, but it completely screwed the lighting up. Hills are painted, and I worked on the poly fiber as much as I could, but I need to go get some more dollar hairspray.

Mowed a bit more lawn this evening after giving one of the neighbors some green peppers and a head of Broccoli. Yep the broccoli is in season. Big heads too. I leave them after the first harvest, they will continue to produce side shoots with smaller heads for several months. One year I cut fresh broccoli out the garden and served it to guests on Thanksgiving... Pretty cool, eh? Been a great growing season so far! Oh didn't manage to get the lawn finished. The part I didn't get done yesterday is now over 6" tall and thick. Ran out of battery with about half what is left still to do. I'll get her done tomorrow (It was getting too dark to mow anyway.)
No progres on the HO stuff today, but sure had fun with the 1/1 scale trains!

Yesterday I passed my some lady doing that in a Maserati Grand Turismo (can you say pricy, $118K+ ; and she had bags full of designer clothing). Almost sideswiped me because she was veering towards my lane and only had a few inches to spare before veering back.

That hasn't happen to me yet, but if it does, I'm emailing Top Gear to find out how much an insurance policy costs on one of those. Maybe even turn it into my insurance. (Yeah, like I'll ever get anything out of it.) My defense is a torquey 4.0 straight 6 Jeep engine and a 2 inch receiver. I don't even like using my cell phone period. The only reason I have it is so my family or friends can get a hold of me. I'd personally be happy with a CB radio.
Nah...... All you guys need is a Leslie S-3L on the car. On good tap on it, and you'll be able to watch them drive right off into the ditch...... And you'll be able to smell them a mile away.........

Well I got the "Powder room" floor grouted. I shall not use a soft sponge a gain. Couldn't find my hard one so I figured this would work if I was careful. Well it did, but made it take sooo long.
Cell phones. Hate ‘em. I have one because the wife made me strap one on. Ulrich is right. Aaaaaack!
Garry- You're lucky Jeff has a keen sense of humor. I guess you forgot he's kin to Vinnie. I'll bet they had some wild reunions when they were younger.
Time to renew MR mag. I'll wait again until they get nervous and offer me half price rates. They forgot too last time and I had to renew at full price.
Tomorrow is a full day with a couple of free hours thrown in. I think since the grout needs about 48 hours to cure before I set the terlit and the sink, I will do some drywall work, OR if I was smart I'd mow my yard. I'd best sleep on it. Now That's a the best idea I've had in a while.

"Keith - that is an awesome "pin parade" you have done there! My colors also! I like blue and yellow, that´s why I like the old ARR paint scheme "
Why thank you, you would be surprised to see how much this cork wanted to get away from me. You DO see all the glue marks. Its been hectic to say the least.. lol. Plus trying to find time to take photos of all this. But you would be surprised how nicely the color push pins are for me... also great for explaning stuff, I can identify certain sections of the cork/track in the photos.. by color of the pins.
Whata mess eh?
Garry, if you happen to place your eyes upon this.. lol... well I 'get it' now as far as what a transition is. I had to lay down some track to see.. but yeah.. we got that~! I also wanted to see if my elevated outside rails.. well any elevation as well. So .. everyone.. my first attempts.. well I'm happy. Take a look.
BTW, You see that crazy blind cat of mine in the background. In a pile of cork. I hated to move her.
Well I doubt if you can see any elevation of any kind.. but its there. I can also add more of a transition to this without making any major errors... lol. Well thats it.. I'm having fun now. I can start to see light at the end of the tunnel... lol. I guess its a question of which is going to give up first, my pocketbook or my back.

***Vincent, I never thought of cannibalizing a VCR for train parts. Great idea!
***Todd, my wife did the same thing to me, gave me a cell phone. I think only 2 (maybe 3, I forget) people have the number. That shows how often I use it. I wish my wife would not use hers while driving, but she does.
***Barry, how is Audrey doing? Sending healing thoughts her way. She really should get some decent train funds (or whatever she prefers) out of that incident.
Question: Anyone know which would work better to prevent mold, a wood sealer (like used on decks) or paint (like Kilz)? Under the enclosed porch it is smelling musty and I want to prevent mold from getting started.

Good Night, Keith!
Good Morning Everyone Else!
Zoe, a bucket of coffee, please. I overslept! Well, not really, but I woke up later than usual. Summer seems to be over now, I can smell a scent of autumn in the air. This morning, we could see some deer peacefully grazing. During the hot days they hid away in the adjacent forest. I´d like to watch them - a much prettier sight than the neighbors around us, who are just a bunch of ill-educated and ill-behaved no-goods.
No plans to day, other than the usual Monday morning run to stock up our supplies of food.
Cell phones - a never ending story. Why do people think it to be necessary to be available at all times? Most conversations are simply use- and senseless. I find it a nuisance, sitting in a posh restaurant and listening to someone talking into his cell phone. Nothing in life is so important that it could not wait for some moments - other than calling 911. I should better stop here, it could turn into an endless rant!
Keith - laying cork roadbed ain´t an easy task. Cork does not like bending and tends to "swim" on the layer of glue. I always used a fairly quick setting adhesive for that reason, a stuff called "Pattex", which cures in 10 minutes and stays elastic, unlike white glue, which gets rock hard.
Sawyer - if I remember correctly, you will start your Sophomore year ( or is it already your Junior year?) at Aiken High this fall. That leaves you with a mere three years to go until graduation. Just a thought - instead of planning a layout on a hollow core door, how about something modular, for you to be able to take along as you move forward on the path of formal education?
You all have a good day!

Good morning. Just like everybody else..........Its going to be a hot week!!
On my way to work and thought I would stop by. All of my cars are selling, but I have no boxes to ship them with . Boy wasn't that a smart move.
Barry...I'm glad Audrey is doing better. That's what screwed us with my wifes car wreck (as far as money wise)......We had the wrong insurance, so we couldn't get any pain and suffering. Sometimes its more about the person getting better but then you want the other person to PAY!!!
I will pop back in later this afternoon.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Good Afternoon,
well, it is past lunchtime, so it´ll be just coffee for me, please, and some buttered toast with lemon curd.
Petra has just received her invitation to the Gulag - the same thing I had to go through end of last year. A waste of time and money! I won´t comment on it further, but it gets time for us to move out of this country.
Barry - yes, emergencies! I tend to forget, that I "owe" my life to the car phone I had put into my car, many years ago. I was somehow able to call 110 (our 911), when I was struck by my first heart attack while on my way home. My for Audrey´s recovery!

Off to the dermatologist today to determine anymore skin cancers.
Then I have to find a dead mouse I think has invaded the computer room. The cat had one she was chasing down the other night and probably injured it severely. anyway there is a strange and almost sickening smell of saurkraut {Sp?} like smell in the room only worse. SO I am assuming she injured the mouse and it found a corner to hide in and die....now to find the room as it is about as packed as the train room is to find the derned thing.....
No other plans today. YET.

Good morning. It's 78 and sunny. The high today will be 103 in the shade, it will be partly cloudy and the word for today is HOT. I'll be in areas cooled by AC as much as possible.I'll be in Alexandria most of the day today. I have to take my mother there for a doctors appointment this morning and we likely won't be back until after 5 pm. The LHS is closed today so I think I'll go by Hobby Lobby and see if they have any train stuff left. Thankfully the AC in my mother's car works so that won't be a problem. On a day like today driving mine would be like driving a sauna. The AC hasn't worked in 8 years and with a busted metal pipe in the high pressure line it's not likely that it ever will again.
Coffee in a SUNNY SOUTHERN mug, please.
***Jeffrey, thanks! I will look into that on the next H-Depot run. BTW, very nice pic there. More excellent lighting.
***Galaxy, good luck finding the little carcass.
Last night, just as a heavy rain storm hit our valley, a neighbor over the hill started a full size fireworks display. Lasted about 10 minutes. That was interesting.
Been thinking of using a Kato double track set (V11) for the vulcano portion of my future (N) layout. Could be used for sight seeing runs. I have passenger trains in SP Daylight (GS-4 Kato set), and two vintage trains in UP and SF. Would be nice to work them into the layout. Would still have a separate track well below the tourist lines, for the mining operation.
Cheers! Rob

That's what I was thinking when I thought about it last night. I could go back to my old 6x6 plans and update them. The main thing about the Hollow Core door is it's $25 for the table top. but I think I'll see what I can do with a modular 3x6 or 6x6

CederstrandQuestion: Anyone know which would work better to prevent mold, a wood sealer (like used on decks) or paint (like Kilz)? Under the enclosed porch it is smelling musty and I want to prevent mold from getting started. Rob
Rob, I use Kilz for exterior surfaces exposed to the elements. But you might want to prep the surface, and also first to see if there is any underlying reason the mustiness. Standing water, or splash back from the ground or deck?
I just read on the MRH site about the fact that MR discontinued the online index, what a shame that it is gone now. It was such a useful resource for finding past articles and what issue they were in. I did see that Joe Fugate is looking for someone to take on the project if MR is willing to give out the original source code and that the NMRA has already agreed to help with the project of cataloging all MR magazines for indexing purposes.

Slept in late this morning, and still could use a couple more hours of sleep. Have a lot of "odds and ends" to get caught up on today before I head down to the layout.
Galaxy, isn't it amazing how such a little thing as a mouse can smell THAT bad......!!! The museum I mention often here is the Rochester & Genesee Valley RR Museum located in Rush, NY South of Rochester. We partner with the New York Museum of Transportation and have a 2 mile long track connecting the two museums. We operate every Sunday from 11AM to 4:30 (5PM) and have extended hours on special days. Most Sundays we operate track cars on the R&GV RR end. You get on a Trolley at the NYMT and then board the track car at "Midway". When we run the Diesel Trains, you get on board one of our antique cabooses for the ride from Midway to the R&GV RR Museum. Our next big event is "Diesel Days" on Saturday and Sunday, August 21st. and 22nd. Much more information can be found here: http://rgvrrm.org/ Take a look and click on Visit or Learn More for direct info on how to visit the museums. If you folks decide to come up for a visit, let me know. (Might be able to get you a cab ride......)
Barry, glad to hear Audrey is recovering from the accident... Accident? THAT should be classified as assault with a deadly weapon! Hope your lawyer takes the perp to the cleaners! People talking and texting, reading email, etc, etc, etc, while driving really bug me! Driving while under the influence here in NYS is now a felony if you have a person under the age of 16 in the car. It should be the same for driving and using a cell phone. OTOH, Ulrich, I probably will be getting a cell phone (Possible one of the $10 a month ones from AARP) for just the safety issue you mentioned.

Keith ... You can save a lot of time if you DO NOT GLUE cork roadbed.... None of mine is glued at all........... I use a staple gun, and I use the fewest number of staples needed for holding until track is nailed down. The track nails and track hold it in place...... After stapling, I tap each staple with a hammer to be sure it does not protrude higher than top surface of cork, and casue track to be uneven.... ... If you later need to relocate the roadbed, it's easy to pull out the staples to do so.

Just heard a funny story on the radio. An older gent in Waterloo got fed up with his neighbors blasting "hippie music" so he decided to retaliate. He bought an airhorn from a scrapped-out dump truck. Aimed it at the neighbors, and blasted away! They called the Po Po...and the arresting officer said he heard the horn "about every 2 seconds, from 5 blocks away." Mr. Policeman busted the guy when he "refused to cease and desist."
VINCENT: Thanks for the update...I was seriously thinking my brain had melted... THAT 1st pic is the 1970s repaint, and the most common variant. The 2nd is the 1960s scheme, the 3rd is the 1960s scheme with the later ACI and lube plates...gee, just like I thought they woulda done!!! Thanks for posting the pics, I've added them to my files. I've got a handful (in the 1970s paint) assigned to bagged feed service out of Cargill East....uh, when the layout is completely built, the tracks are in, buildings built, etc., etc., etc. BUT, they stand ready on the shelves...just waiting for THAT day in a nearby decade....
My half-a-cent of opinionated opinion about cell phones: I hate them. I detest them. Like TODD, it was the wife THAT prompted me to have one installed on my hip. Why? Not for endless "blah blah blappity blah..." conversations, but strictly EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS. I'm in the ditch, she's in the ditch, I'm broke down, she's broke down...urgently important messages only. Then, mine evolved into w**k use.... I for the life of me, can NOT understand nor rationalize these morons who drive along with the stupid thing to their ear...WHAT in the world could they be talking about mile after mile after mile????
BARRY: Very belated with this, and I apologize for the delay, but very GLAD to hear Audrey is OK...especially considering the circumstances!!! I hope they not only throw the book at the moron...I hope they cram it up a particular bodily opening as well! and beat some sense into him with the other volumes of the law library. I'd even be all for Audrey using her good arm to beat the snot out of him with her cane!!!
RYAN, BILL: Good mornin' guys, GOOD to see ya in here!
KEITH: Always good to see your layout progress, don't have anything to offer on the curves, transistions, glue vs. staples, etc., etc., etc.
TODD: I thought I was the guy with the ever-changing schedule...THAT keeps getting changed!
ULRICH: Since you surely took such good and detailed notes during your time at the GULAG, I'm sure Petra will fly through with high marks! Actually, I'm sorry she has to endure THAT bureaucratic crap! I thought she'd already gone through it though...didn't they qualify her to run a forklift or something???? Oh, no, wait...they were talking about certifying her to run a forklift... Welp, Worley Warehousing in Cedar Rapids is always hiring forklift operators... Seriously though, I hope and yes, pray, THAT a good opportunity comes your way!
For now...I ought to make some phone calls for THAT, so as to line up more content for "the little weekly miracle" (our newspapers).
A good and safe day to all 'eh.
Here's a pic for the day...this is what I was looking at ten year ago in Creston, Iowa:
Question: I am looking to add some "people" to the layout and in particular I want some railroad workers, farm workers, and laborers doing various jobs, painters, construction, etc... I guess it does not really matter what they are "doing", my real question is: What brand has good quality, painted figures / people? What brand do you like? LOL.. I gotta get my two cents in on this one. I'll take em all .. all kinds .. all sizes. What to look for is that even though they say they are N scale.. Or HO.. I tend to see all sizes of varying degrees. I think I am getting at.. the 'Forced Perspective' that is.. the larger size of ppl.. go up front and smaller or graduating smaller towards the back. I do remember when my son was going throught Micro Machines.. he handed me a plastic toy soldier and said.. "Here dad, paint this gray and mount it as a statue in the center of town"~
Chris .. Nice shot.
I love it. Jeff, Chris and others.. I save these.. this is so much fun when I wake up in the morning.
"KEITH: Always good to see your layout progress, don't have anything to offer on the curves, transistions, glue vs. staples"

Just got back from my driver's ed training, the instructor I was driving with was nice and we went through the driver's test several times. I think I'll pass the test, but idk abt a perfect score. parallel parking was pretty easy, but I had to straighten up once, and a few times I was too far away from the curb.
Small bowl of mixed nuts and a coffee refill, please.
***Ryan, the room under the porch only has one small window (I should have put in to for cross flow) and is not hooked in to any form of AC or heat. I suspect most of the moisture comes through from where the wood walls meet the concrete knee wall. Perhaps a small amount comes from the slab, too. I could run a dehumidifier in there 24/7, but that would sure add to our power bill. (Regarding people): Personally I like a lot of Woodland Scenics and some of Preiser. For crowds (fill) the cheapo ones from HK will help. Might want to touch a few of them up with your own colors for more variety. Keith makes a good point about the variation in sizes. Heck, real people vary quite a bit, too.
***Chris said: [WHAT in the world could they be talking about mile after mile after mile????] The answer should be obvious, they must be discussing Trains. BTW, that's a great pic.
