  "hOT chocolate please~"

I'll bet most of you are in bed by now.. so consider this a morning message and a country song to greet your day.  So don't click on the link if you don't like country... lol.  Country music?  If you can't feel it, you never will.

But its a foot tapper... the best  kind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1iQLXM1e0I

This mornings reading is on Scratchbuilding a Whipple Truss Bridge in HO scale  Nice pic too.  A bridge made back in 1870.

From two Central Valley 150 Pratt Truss Bridge kits  http://www.housatonicrr.com/Whipple.htm

I have this kit in N scale,  I thought it looked familiar.

Chris.. lol.. quote.. lol.. woot.. "KEITH: Cheer up man! You're always just so darn gloomy...Smile,Wink, & Grin And, I will STILL trade you weather any day, anytime.

Alright alright .. I'm not gonna say $#!+,  even if I have a whole mouth full of it.  I'll make ya a deal, No more complaining about the terrible weather, if you try to make it out here for a week or two next summer.  Plan on the last week of June for the warmest water, 72 degrees.. considered warm.   You pay for a flight out here, and I'll take you to the nicest beaches around... we'll go surfing.  Right now the water is a cool 62 degrees and falling.

Time for bed  see you all in the morning.

Good morning all,

Well here I am behind posts again!  I had company in and out all weekend and first thing Monday I drove to Chicago.  Well actually Homewood, IL to visit CN “southern” operations center.  Very impressive on how the RR runs and manages trains between Canada and the gulf of Mexico.  No pictures since everything there is post 1960.  Homewood was a 5 hour drive from the house, so it wasn’t too bad for everything I got to see.

Good Morning people!!

Welp, I got the cardiologist appointment today about getting a defibrillator put into me. I also am planning to go and see about getting a new soundcard for my computer I'm building. I's going to be a busy fellow today---

Keith: Liked that youtube video. Also like the way your layout is working out.

We are supposed to be kinda dull and dreary today with a 30% chance of little tiny dribbly showers coming through. We won't see any rain but we will see the humidity build up

Flo, I'll just have a cupajava and a breakfast bagel please---I'll be at the window booth for a bit

Good morning.  Its not as hot, and maybe some rain later.

First off, I've already gotten mad this morning.  Stupid "FAFSA" website makes you think you are so dumb.  "That's wrong", "that's incorrect", Banged Head.   Anyways........Thanks for the comments on the car.  I'm going to go by a LHS today and find a couple more projects to do.  One of my car's sold last night and its going to Australia.   I also have a "customers" car I need to start on.  So its been busy in the basement lately.

JR.........Last time I did this car, I had a problem with pictures.  I agree, its the blue.  The car looks 100% better in person than the photos.

Chris.......If I think of something I will let you know.  I probably won't till it gets closer to go to school, but thanks Big Smile.

Well I better do the "honey do list".  Then its off to the LHS.

Morning gents, large coffee and porkroll (a Jersey thing just in case your wondering) egg & cheese on a roll with a side of hash browns please. Well happy to report and still no bear sightings. But we do have some of the dumbest squirrels in America here. Set out the have-a-heart trap next to the wife's corn and I no sooner get to the back door and plunk the door slams shut. Mr. Squirrel is now going bonkers  running around the cage at about 100mph after i reset the trap and go back in the house i check it about 15 minutes later and there's one of his buddies.Well this went on for the better part of the afternoon until I ran out of peanut butter. Later on in the afternoon I was just about ready to take my little guy over to Lowes (his favorite place in the world) and I look out the back door as I grabbed my keys and I saw this big and I mean big Redtailed Hawk sitting on the ground. It's not uncommon to see them around here mostly sitting in trees or on the roof of one of the barns or something but never on the ground. I went to the other room to grab my camera but as soon as i got back he took off. Maybe he heard there was a new squirrel hunter in town.......lol I really do hate those fuzzy tailed tree rats.

Well after chores and job hunting I plan on getting back to my Walthers asphalt street system for the largest town on the railroad that I've been working on. There pretty neat and all with a lot of little details like man hole covers and storm drains and curbing but the problem I'm seeing is that once you start using them your pretty much stuck having to keep using them. I wasn't having any luck transitioning them to .040 styrene cut sheets as additional road sections, I found them at Train World being as everyone else seems to be out of stock and at the cheapest price I've seen so far.

Oh well hope everyone enjoys their day I hope it's cooler where your at.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

"Good morning everyone!  Two eggs scrambled with cheese, two waffles, and 5 strips of bacon, I need to give my gallbladder a good workout~"

Steven.. alot of us here enjoy those pics of C&NW.   I always look forward to it in the morning,

Barry, I thank you for the compliment on the country song,  I did say it was a foot tapper and it was. I think someone like Der John would say,  "Yeah I remember that guy in the Kingston Trio" ...lol. But that vid has some nice pic of a small town. I'm sure you noticed the saloon and dirt roads.  I liked it all.

Now concerning the layout.. wow.. thanks again.  Last night I did lay more cork and plan on laying more cork.  As I continued to lay the cork I found that the layout was getting dirty.  You know, the damp cloth to make sure it adheres to the wood.  Well I couldn't believe how much dust, dirt, cork, wood shaving was on those ramps.  Then I started wondering... lol.. just how much of a need there is to continue laying cork.  As I followed the ramps up I actually notice some parts I had not glued in, just to make the laying of track easier.  Lucky me.

ON a side note here, I'm looking for a link that J.R. sent me (I believe it was JR)  that listed all the possible buildings associated with 'yards' depending on if it was steam or diesel.  No,  I dont want to buy another book,  I have a few already.  But as I work up the layout with laying cork,  I'll also be doing another diorama to tag team my efforts and time.   Funny thing.. as I move up.. its taking less cork and the laying of cork is easier.  As far as pics, well nothing to photograph.  But I'm making headway... I think I can I think I can.. choo choo~!

Allengheny, thats quite a funny story.   Well, how many did you catch?  I was wondering, just how many squirrels a jar of peanut butter will catch. Maybe have a sign out front that says... "Squirrels For Sale, good eatin, low on cholesteral"

Hey I noticed you've been here since  07, you got any pics we all can look at?  A site perhaps?  Just wondering.

 Hello Again!

I hope it's OK that I ask a question here, some of you know I am working on a C&NW diorama and need a loco, I found a Brand New Athearn HO #140-4427 SD-40-2 Powered Blue Box for $40 shipped. Was wondering if that is a worth the price?

Thanks in advance,

Steven

Allengheny, thats quite a funny story.   Well, how many did you catch?  I was wondering, just how many squirrels a jar of peanut butter will catch. Maybe have a sign out front that says... "Squirrels For Sale, good eatin, low on cholesteral"

The "Low on cholesteral" depends on whether he was catchin' 'em with "real" peanut butter or the stuff that is basically peanut flavored shortening with a lot of sugar thrown in.  You know, the stuff choosy mothers choose........Whistling  I get the real stuff made out of peanuts and salt that has the big warning on the label, "Warning!  Contains Peanuts!" or sometimes, "Warning!  This product was processed using equipment that has been used to process nuts!"  Yep THAT's the stuff I use.......Smile,Wink, & GrinLaugh

So How many did he catch???  I think we should have a pool to see who comes closest.  I say 7.

It is a lovely 71°F here in the Finger Lakes this morning under drizzly skies.  We need the rain so I can still say it is a lovely day.  Actually warmer up in Moosonee today.  They are currently 23°C under partly cloudy skies.

I have to start getting materials together today for the NMRA Picnic on Saturday.  Looks like I won't be mowing lawn, so I may get a few other things done.

Later!

Steven ... 40 bucks out the door.. eh.. not a bad price.  Depends on the type of person you are I guess.  I know this,  what ever you choose, its your choice.  That is,  you have the ability to choose, and if you do, there's no looking back and saying.. I should have done this.  Thats the choice you made.. and live with it.  I do know from past experiences,  If you don't, and you really liked it... well that particular one.. you will always use as a ruler to measure others by.  And then you might have wished you bought it.  Same goes for a perspective young lady that you may find crossing your path.  You let that one go~  you'll probably be comparing her to all the rest.  I hope this helps.. lol.  Woot!

Good (mid) Morning. Getting a real late start today as I'm going to see Mom and do not have plans to do much at the house today as I should. Then w**k at 5pm CDT.

Spent a little time in the train room this morn. Didn't do anything except look and say, "nah, I don't have time to do that. Nah, don't want to get all that out and clean it up. Nope, best not start that" Basically did nothing.

Ray- I'm very sorry to hear about your BIL. Rest assured he as well as your SIL, you and the entire family are in my prayers. On the bright side, if there can be one, my Father had Multiple Myloma (sp?) and was symtomized and prognosis-ized pretty much as your BIL. He was given 6 weeks and made a wonderful recovery and lived another 7 years. The last 6 months was tough on him and us, but those 6+ years were great. He really enjoyed himself. I hope the same for your BIL, only longer.

John- I say I use Word, less to type and makes no difference what I use to anyone else really, but actually I use "Word Processor for Works". A package that is bundle at no additional charge with the computer. I also use IE. I don't have any problems with posting into the forums. What happened before was I apparently miss clicked an icon when bringing up the smiley things. The screen made a move and I didn't pay attention until I had posted and noticed .

I do spell check using the proof read of the post in Word, sorry Word Processor for Works (see?) and then again after the copy and paste when I highlight the names so people can see what I post related to them without reading the others if they choose, or don't want to read all my ramblingsWhistlingBig Smile, and then again after I hit the post button. THAT's usually when I catch the most. But, as we all know a proof read immediately after writing doesn't do a thorough job and no offense to anyone, it's not that you're not worth it, but I don't want to type a post then sit for an hour and come back to see that I wrote you instead of your or wierd rather than weird.

Ken- OK the keyboard is soppy now after reading you drove a '69 Daytona. Then when I read on and see you own a '68 Hemi Roadrunner, it happened again. I have a '70 Roadrunner with a little ole 383 in the garage that hasn't moved in over 25 years. I too need to get back on that when time and cash allow.

Well, I best get moving.....again I'm late.

Have a Great Day!!!

Also I'm going to attempt to find a good spot on my trackplan to fit in a passing siding.

If'n it was me, I'd drop a curved turnout at the furniture factory corner, and run the passing siding along the top to the other curve for a good long siding. So says the guy who's own "passing siding" will consist of at best an engine run-around...Whistling

And SAWYER, here's an idea for one of your bridges: ex-Rock Island mainline crossing over the CNW at the Cedar River Bridge.

[snip picture]

Of course, you'd probably need ten times the greenery... Whatcha got in mind for the two river bridges??? I think this layout has a lot of scenic potential.

Back at it goeth I...

Chris

I would use the curved turnout, but alas Atlas still hasn't released them and I don't want to try to fit a peco code 55 to atlas or micro-engineering code 55, since it's basically code 80 buried in the ties. That's a great idea for the bridge, there's also one here in Aiken over a road that I may prototype. I might take the grades out since it's a 2% grade on 12.5" radius curves. I dunno how well that's gonna work to not allow stringing the train. These bridges from Micro Engineering are what I'm thinking about for the lake bridges. This atlas bridge would work good for that CNW scene you posted though. Decisions decisions.

Good morning. Getting a late start today as I had a bad night last night. My ankle was hurting so bad that I didn't get to sleep until around 3 am. My nephew found a van yesterday with the steering column still in it but he says the coupling between the column and the steering box is different. So today he's supposed to be going back to see about snagging the steering box too, because sure as we don't get it we're going to need it. Old man Murphy never sleeps.

 Good afternoon 'eh,

Yup...STILL w**king on THAT article for THAT. I've had about a dozen "false starts" on it, think I've finally got it going in the right direction. Now, I just have to go back and listen to about 1:43 worth of agitated people to get the best quotes...and quote 'em with 100% accuracy.

KEITH: Funny! While I appreciate the offer, the odds of me making a trip to California are somewhere between Slim and None...and Slim just took the bus out of town! Laugh Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the Land of Shake and Bake... its just THAT IF I ever get up enough bucks to make such a trip...well, there's plenty of things here at home THAT would need them dollars just a little bit more: furnace, windows, siding or painting the house, etc., etc., etc.

Besides...either a shark would get me or I'd drown ("we'll go surfing"). With MY luck, the Baywatch member resuscitating me wouldn't be some babe...it'd be...a DUDE! Shock Dead

I guess weather, "seasonable" or "unseasonable" is just something we gotta live with. And just wait, a few months from now, you'll hear me hollarin' all the way to the PCH about how blinkin'-brackin', frickin'-frackin' COLD it is around here...your 50s and 60s will (again) be "paradise" as I'm throwin' on layer upon layer of clothing to keep from freezing to death in the sub-zero arctic tundra known as Iowa...

WISCONSIN RAILFAN: Hey, GLAD you (and some others) are liking the pics! Thank you very much! As for the powered blue box Athearn...I see I'm a little late weighing in on this, but $40 with shipping? Sounds pretty darn good! Like I said, Plano offers a brass template for the nose bell notch, and includes 3 or 4 brass inserts to go into the notch. The bell (Detail Associates or Details West) goes on the insert. Pretty slick! Toughest part is matching Athearn's paint.  What paint scheme does it have?? Original yellow? "Traditional" yellow? "Zito?"

If'n you be needin' pics...let me know. I might have the exact unit somewhere in the digital files...

SAWYER: I can see where the turnouts could be a problem. As for the bridges, THAT Atlas bridge is exactly what I was thinking of. Careful Lad, you don't want to share a brain with me...Laugh The ME bridge would be awesome for one of your river crossings. In my warped mental image, I'm picturing THAT for one, and...

for 'ta other...Big Smile

But, THATs just me... can't get anywhere with my own designs...so I come up with "solutions" for everybody else...Banged Head

Time to get back to THAT article for THAT...lest she come up with a "solution" for me tomorrow...to my personal detriment! Oh, and she says I have a "linguistic flair." I asked her if I should see a doctor about having it removed...hoped it isn't painful nor contagious...Mischief

Afternoon all Burger deluxe and a coke  please  all we were gettin some well needed rain here not enough to do much of anything really but I loaded up the old truck and headed off to the recycling center and the poor town workers had to close the place because of a little drizzle give me a break don't these people know what the job market is like out here.

Well got a total of 7 through out the day and not a single one since, don't know about low cholesterol or any of that and it was a brand named peanut butter.  I'll try and take some pictures of the next crop of incarcerated squirrels, When I get some layout pics worth posting I may put them some where but afraid I know where some may suggest I put them......

I WON!  I WON!!!  THAT should make up a good batch of Squirrel Stew don't you think, eh? Peanut butter flavored as well......Whistling

Zoe, I'll have a reuben sandwich with a side order of fries to go along with a glass of Dr. Pepper please.

Since the rain stopped (it was only a sprinkle anyway) I decided to get some more of the lawn mowed.  So i have about 2/3s done at the moment.  I usually mow twice during the month of August....  I will most likely have to mow at least 5 times this month if the schedule stays the same....  I'm talking 4 or so inches of growth every week.

OK, I have some recording w*rk to finish today and now would be a good time to get it done.

Later!

Just a quick stop.  Made it to a LHS and picked up a few things.

Here's a shot of my next project and the customers car.  My project is the Railbox.  I've patched it, and it will be rusty and graffiti (yeah I know Whistling).  That's what people are looking for on the cars I sell.   The "hooker" hopper is a customers.  He wanted something basic.  I still gotta do the roof, and underneath.  That should be done in a couple of days or so.

This is getting to be a real ZOO.   Last week it was mice and this week it is squirrels.  Somebody should let all the cats know, they would have a field day and eliminate those pesky critters.

Chloe, when you get a moment, I would like to have a plate of Bush Beans and Garlic toast with a cherry coke today for change.

CHRIS,  Is that the Kate Shelly bridge in your picture?  That is a neat story about it and how it came by it's name. (If it is.)

ULRICH,  Please touch base with us here, we sure are missing you.  Hope all is well. Also still wondering about Fergie and OJ-Ed. Anyone have any news of them.

SAWYER, I think that layout plan has some good options for you.  Are you able to extend either of those sidings into a small yard?

JEFF, Sorry to hear that the ankle is acting up again.  You'll just have to stop that table dancing. Really like your diesel fuel storage.  I have one of those cars that doesn't really fit well with my era, but it would work for storage.  I must try that if you don't mind.

LEE, really sounds like a great week-end you had in the Chi-Town area. I can just imagine the amount of info you would have gained there.Wow!!

Keith,  for a relatively new person to the hobby, I am quite impressed by your skills. That layout is really looking good and taking on a quality and feeling of it's own.  Thumbs UpThumbs Up

I have finally been able to track down and purchase the "Dowmtown Deco's " Angel's Pillow Factory that has been out of production for quite awhile now and I had almost given up hope on locating one.  But  T-J's Model Trains in the Tri-Cities area of Washington  had it and I was able to pick it up from them. This will be my first hydrocal kit. So if any of you have some great hints for these hydrocal kits I would greatly appreciate any info I can glean from you.

Well, I am work here again, so I hadn't better take up any more of their time or I might be a permanent Model railroader with nothing to support my hobby habit.

Keep smiling and stay cool ya all.

Chris, enjoy listening to agitated people. it seems that's a part of life. I hear you on that cold weather; I'm starting to look forward to fall but I'm sure I'll start complaining about how cold it is by January or February. It's nice for a while, and then gets really old realllllllly frickin quick. That second bridge looks kind of like the micro-engineering steel viaduct kits. I know I keep on going back to those kits but I'm not that great at scratchbuilding. I could see my ME open deck girder idea for the bridge on the lower line and that bridge or one like it on the higher line.

It's taken me a while to hammer out this plan and also a lot of other ideas that never really worked or didn't appeal much to me for whatever reason

Robby, as always, great work!

Johnboy, I actually set out for this layout to not have a yard. Yard switching is kind of boring to me (my current layout has one and I've sorted some cars a few times), but town or industrial switching is fun to me. I've added a switchback and small passing siding to my current plan so far. Worst case scenario if I get a crave for some yard switching I can switch a few trains in a staging yard once they're built.

Well, I have about half my spanish studying done. it got to the point where I was doing it to get it done and so wasn't learning. I'll take a break and either attack it this afternoon or tomorrow.

 Good afternoon...sanity break!!!!

STEVEN: Yup, THAT be the part! "Original yellow" is just THAT...the yellow CNW used forever and several decades. The locomotive number will be a smaller roman font (type style) on the long hood. "Traditional yellow" is what they started using in '91 after the Zito yellow faded out so badly. Traditional yellow is darker than the original yellow, and has large green (reflective in real life) numbers on the long hood and a yellow safety stripe on the side sill. Zito is the nuclear fireball, melt your retinas bright yellow used briefly from about '81-'91. It too has large block numbers on the long hood, in dark green (same as the top and cab).  Traditional yellow repaints also got the Ball and Bar on the nose. Athearn probably put it right where it'll get hacked into to put the nose bell in...SoapBox.

The CNW 6852 is in original paint, the trailing CNW 6809 is in Zito yellow.

One of the "better," in my not-so-humble opinion Traditional yellow repaints. On some they took the time to paint the nose bell notch green, as well as the fronts of the battery box/steps. I think THAT adds some "class" to the units. Other repaints were more "dip-job" in their appearance. Probably the difference between Transco in Oelwein and some outfit in Kansas City doing the jobs.

And here's what I did to two Athearns and a vintage GSB Rails unit. A trio in Zito. They won't win any awards, I'm sure of THAT...but I'm happy with 'em.

JOHNBOY: You ARE correct Sir! THAT be the Kate Shelley all right...used to be one of my favorite places to be... The new Kate Shelley is next to it now, on the north side. A concrete and steel monster. I haven't gone to see it yet...not really sure I want to.

The bridge where Kate saved the day (night) is actually a mile or two south of there, a little place called Monahelia or something like THAT. I guess the original depot is there with a museum dedicated to her. Never made it there, I was always too busy taking R&R at the bridge and inspecting the dead line in the yard at Boone.

Welp...back at it...again. I just got through the guy's azzzzzzzzzclown lawyer essentially telling the opponents THAT they are stupid, don't know a good thing when they see it, and by gosh..."we've met ALL of the requirements." All this said while waving his finger in the air, and delivering his bilge in a loud, testy, irritated at the "common man" way. Dunce I'm about half-way through the tape...

 Chris,

Also, I am having trouble finding the bell, you recommended to go with the inserts.  Would you happen to have a link for those?

Thanks for posting all them pictures,

Steven

STEVEN: Trad. yellow. And it looks like Uncle Irv's bunch put the nose herald up too high...Disapprove Confirmed, I just looked at one I did, re-did, and will re-re-do eventually. I ended up repainting the nose after I put the bell on. For the bell, take a visit to Walthers, and look at Detail Associates or Details West. One makes 'em in white metal, the other in plastic. Your choice, I've used both with no preference. I think it boiled down to whichever one was cheaper at the time.

He does a lot of CNW locomotives, has some handy tips for matching factory paint. He clued me in on where to find the best looking strobe beacon to put on the cab roof: Precision Scale 39137 "strobe beacon." A little Tamiya "clear orange" paint, and it looks GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

With all THAT said, I'll not "call you out" or issue any citations if it ain't 100% detailed, etc. Some others (NOT in the Diner crowd) would... I don't "roll THAT way." Big Smile

"EMERGENCY! O'clock" has arrived, time to see which Season One episode RTV is showin' today. Might be right back on tape review as I finally found one of the "money quotes" I've been looking for...

 Good Evening Folks!

I am craving a pulled pork sandwich and a cherry Dr. Pepper please.

Thank you Chris for all the insightful information, sounds like I am in for a fun project.  I am in the process of my first diorama, that is almost finished, so I needed another education project.  I purchased this loco for the dio, so if it's not 100% that's OK, these are just "live n' learn" projects, and for practicing my techniques for my future layout.

Hey guys, whats up? I just got out of the pool, about 100 degrees, minus the blooming heat index. Was outside all morning cutting grass. A large Cuban sammich sounds really good right now. Thanks. Nothing new from the model layout hopefully the bipolar cat has left it in one piece.

Good Evening Diners!

Our heat wave is supposed to end on Saturday so we can expect highs of about 70F.  I'll try to get some of it sent south, maybe as far as Iowa but I don't know about Missouri (sorry Jim).

Barry, if it makes you feel any better I'm going in for the roto-rooter job on the 23rd. It is just for a screening but I'm not looking forward to it. I haven't been into a hospital for 40 years and hopefully this won't really break that trend. The only drug I take is Lipitor and that was more of just a precaution. Believe me I am very thankful when I read the problems some of you have.

Well, I think I'll read the latest Classic Trains for a bit before I head off to the Land of Nod. I picked it up in Thief River Falls last weekend and the local KMart of all places. It cost $6.95 compared to $8.95 up here. That is a sore point with many Canadians as on just an exchange basis it should be at most $7.50.
