Good Morning. High of 86 today with a 30% chance of Tstorms. Cooling off it is. Say what's the snare drum doing over there? Oh, Garry's been here. (ba-dum-bum) Good one by the way Garry and as a matter of fact I am contemplating another scratch build. My dance hall. Another simple structure that should take a day or two of normal time, but for me at the rate I'm going will be about 39 ½ years.

Vincent- Yup, got one of them there airbrushes from HF myself. I forgot which one you have, but I have the dual action one. I have had no problems with the thing, though as you probably figured out, contrary to what the instructions say, remove the cover cap before painting. We don't want another air brush war in here like last time. The only problems, I'm TOLD, is that nothing out there is available in the form of accessories such as extra bottles so if you break a bottle you're kinda screwed. But for the price of the gun....,nyaa. I could have sworn I saw bottles when I got mine but didn't buy extra because I had no faith in the cheap little booger working. But it did and does.

If it wears out would I buy another one or buy a Badger or Paasche? Don't know.

Chris- I agree with Rob- Thanks for the pic of ole 939. I will use it as a model for my dash 8. It has the right amount of grime. Not too heavy, but well used.

Robby- Good catch. We rarely get long freights like that around me. And of those rarely get much of a mixed either. Just barely enough sometimes to be called a mixed. I did recognize those items on the flatbeds, never see that around here either.

Well best get a move on. I'll just take some coffee to go pleee... What's that on the floor? Looks like someones...Confused.. Hm. And here I thought it was just a figure of speech. Kinda curious, did anyone notice just how Barry sat on the stool without it?

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning. It's 79 and partly cloudy. The high will be 98 with a heat index of 105 and it will be mostly cloudy. The UV index is 10+ (extreme). Anybody care for a sunburn?

It's coming around to that time when the wolves are clawing at the door so I'll be taking care of bills today. Oh joy! I may have time to get some layout work in and I may even be able to squeeze in a trip to the not-so-local LHS in Alexandria. I also need to see if I can get a color cartridge for my printer. Deskjet printers are so very handy but they are also very thirsty for ink! Fortunately the cartridges for mine are in the lower price range. I also have to get some grocery shopping done. The cupboards are looking a mite bare.

Howdy !  .... OJ and oatmeal, please.

Jerry ....I like the CGW loco and caboose! Thumbs Up

Chris I like those photos. I mentioned train watching in my youth was mostly Burlington, but I could see any of the Chicago roads without too much time.  I could see the Burlington from the house. Santa Fe was nearby. CGW, CNW, IC, etc. were all close.

Speaking of moving the diner. .... Do you recall the time somebody moved it out in the boondocks and diners had trouble findiong it? ... Also, I suggest a siding in Canada for a change.  I bet there are some really nice Canadian locations.

Hi Zoe - since it's about lunchtime, I'll have a BLT, a Rio Grande mug of coffee, and a RBF for dessert. Smile Thanks!

Jerry, that is one fine (and lonnnnnnggggg) passenger consist there! Thumbs Up It very likely is prototypical length, though. I couldn't run a prototypical length passenger train on my (future, expanded) layout either, I'm sure. Looks like you've been keeping yourself somewhat busy with the MRR'ing projects, as well.

Chris, is that Geep photo that you posted, one from your college days? THAT looks good to me, too. Yeah!! And thanks for posting the photos of those Santa Fe (-looking) warbonnets!

Since y'all were talking about power supplies for lighting, I was thinking that I need to check the specs on an old slotcar power supply that I have sitting in my box with some MRR tools, and see how much it puts out (amps and volts). Might be able to use that for the lighting, methinks...

Ooh, ooh! Todd, if you got your new MR yesterday, I bet mine may be sitting at my post office box waiting for me. Reading material for my spare moments this weekend. Big Smile

Rob, those are some nice log cars there (whatever you paid for them)! Thumbs Up So is she planning a log camp somewhere on her layout? I'd think she's about to run out of places to put stuff, between the carnival, the church scene, the farm scene and all the others. Whistling

Careful, Garry, telling Todd those things, or you'll get 'under his skin'...Whistling

Robby - great video; that train had a lot of military loads on it (of course, it was a pretty long train anyway!). Yeah!!

Barry - does Tiger Direct carry MRR'ing stuff? I only knew of them for computer or electronics stuff before you mentioned THAT.  Confused Might need to do some looking online...

I got kinda lucky, and scored on THAT auction site last night. Won an Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 Mikado (undec.), and within my price range (thank heaven for snipe programs). Smile It was from a seller I've seen on there a lot, and he usually has good stuff, plus said he had test-run it and it worked okay. The 'overbody' (cab, and boiler covering) was off of the boiler/front section, but he said he'd check the directions and was gonna put THAT back on before he shipped. For my layout, the Mikado will be the biggest steam power it has (also the biggest I can fit on the Walthers 90' turntable - which is yet to be assembled). Can't fit a Challenger or a Big Boy on that turntable - and either of those might be a bit too big of a hit to my MRR budget. Looking forward to getting it in and taking a look-see. [drool] Then will probably need to see about a DCC decoder for it.

So if we move the Diner to a Canadian siding next month, will the moose come to visit? While I cogitate on THAT, I'll be at the RC, seeing about my lunch. Dinner

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Chris, nice man. Sweet pic of the CNW and ATSF units.

Well, today I'm planning on doing some rock carving. I'm also starting to get tired of my 4x8, so I'm planning a Hollow Core Door layout. Until i build it, I'll be focusing on my locomotive and freight fleets, and also trying new scenery techniques. I based my plan off of the old MR project layout "The Alkali Central", shown in the Dec. 1995 and Jan. 1996 issues. The two tracks to the left go off to staging.

Italian Roast coffee in a  SANTA FE  mug, please.

***Jim, her layout is running out of room, no question about it. This is a good thing, it means we're making progress. The log cars will come down from the mountain line (bottom left corner) and bring them to the mill (below) for processing:

In hindsight, it might have been nicer to make that track a siding, rather than looping it back into the main. But it will work for her purposes just fine. She is more into the scenes than the trains anyway, so all is well.

Afternoon all!

Chloe I'll have a Barry Burger with cheese and a large order of French Fries smothered in gravy and a chocolate milk shake.  I'll go sit over at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

Got home a while ago from the docent duty at the museum.  Had about 75 or 80 little 5 year old kids from a pre-school place this morning.  OK, so there was actually only about 25 kids, it sure seemed like more....Whistling  We took them around the museum in 2 separate groups.  Actually had a couple kids who had some great questions about trains.  One very cute little boy had on an engineers hat like the one I wear when I am at the museum.  I told him I liked his choice of hats.  He looked at me, grinned, and said, "You too!"  One of the teachers took a picture of the two of us with our hats....Wink

We did have one little girl who threw a major temper tantrum...  I don't know exactly what happened as she was in the other group.  Probably some one told her THAT word.... NO!  She was laying on the sidewalk and on the stone ballast kicking and screaming and pounding her fists on the rocks.  (All the time being properly supervised by one of the adults.)  She didn't get anywhere with the tirade, but she sure tried.  Evidently at home she is more successful.....Whistling  We finally sent the track cars back to the other museum without her and the adult.  They had the bus stop down and retrieve them.  By THAT time the little .......  didn't want to leave and was grabbing onto anything she could to not have to get on the bus while kicking and sceaming.  I told one of the track car operators (puts on best W. C. Fields voice) "There is no such thing as a tough child....  If you parboil them for about 7 hours, they will always come out tender!"

Anyway the whole tour lasted about 20 minutes....  I spent 4.5 hours including the drive, setting everything up, and closing and locking up the museum.....  Still, mostly a fun morning!

Later!

Hey guys, Got the ol' farmall running. And my dad got a very 'shocking' experience with the ignition system. The new coil installed easy enough. And why wouldn't it? It's designed for easy repairs and maintenance. Chris, you may enjoy these pictures. I did all the paintwork myself. She's not the best restoration, but she sits outside alot. The tuned up ignition system. Runs like a top as normal.

Hey, crazy idea, why don't we make a model of how we think the diner should look, then post a picture of it on our layouts? I read something about a wagon on tour to people's layouts in England, what do you guys think?

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

Great idea, but what scale? Although N myself, I would vote for HO.

Yeah, I was thinking HO too, but like you said. Some of us use different scales, regions, eras, heck I freelance B.R. myself. But hey, there's a prototype for everything.

Hello folks!

Still not much going on here, other than opening a few small orders of miscellaneous stuff. No real work on the layout yet, even though I'm chomping at the bit.  The friend who is going to help me get the train table started is pretty swamped. I'm considering getting started on my own (well, with wife's help, if she's willing), but I  need to find someone who can pick me up a couple boards [shrug].

I saw the discussion about the Zephyr DCC system.  That is pretty much what I've talked myself into getting.   I like the idea of being able to use a power pack as throttle(s), since I have a nearly new MRC 280 double pack sitting idle.  Back when I was planning on trying to do an HCD layout, I'd intended to go DC, but by the time I had the layout broken up into blocks, the blocks were so small that it would have been a constant block switching nightmare...and this layout will be even smaller.  Now I need to get decoders put in a half dozen or so locomotives.

Sir Madog

Today is our 26th wedding anniversary. For richer or poorer, for better or worse - now it is poorer and worse for Petra and me. I feel pretty bad about not being able to offer Petra the kind of life that I think we deserve. If I could see a silver lining on the horizon, but there is just nothing in sight, other than dreams of a peaceful life on a piece of land with our name on it, far away from the anguish and sorrow we now have.

Ulrich:  A belated happy anniversary to you and yours. The sentiments you express sound like they could come from me...except we are only headed for our 14th anniversary.

Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.

 Just a quick stop.

Todd...I'm glad you like that video.  A buddy of mine lives about 50ft or so from that line.  Its the "sand patch" line.   It runs from Pittsburgh to Baltimore.  He always get some good video/pictures.

 Rob....Nice looking layout shot.

Here's another video I got from that line.  It was taken right before the "Santa Fe".   Its a Amtrak with the CEO on board.  GREAT sounding horn.

Hey guys

Did more sanding work on my car (in the same kind of heat Jeff mentioned; I didn't get burned but my brother did). I also went to check on the car that someone was intrested in trading. I was hoping to at first but when I saw the car I decided not to. The online ad pics of the car looked decent, but in person it sucked. Originally a candy apple red car that was surface painted dark blue (almost black) and the red was showing though. Also looked like it went through a hailstorm. I'm gonna check about the Mark VIII that is downtown and just needs suspension work (under $500 if I do it myself) in the next few days.

Also got the thrust washers and brush kits. The additional thrust washers and some more lube made a big difference in the one I was able get the motor to work (remember, only 1 set of useable brushes). I tried the brushes from an N-scale KATO loco and the thickness is spot-on, but the spring is too short. Anyone know if stretching or coumpounding  the springs would work?

Todd, same airbrush, dual action . My HBT didn't have any of the extra bottles. I may go check at some local places to see if anything they have will fit. There was one I saw when at HBT that had removable brushes and nozzels so swithching colors would be fairly quick. I'll grab that later when I'm over that way along with a hose for it.

I noticed the slip-up in the directions when I was riding on the way back. I had a good laugh, but just be something lost in translation, lol.

Garry, good one. lmao!

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hi guys!

I haven't been in in a few days, I know. No major new worries though.

The nuerosurgeon said there is really nothing he can do about the arthritis in my lumbar spine, most likely the cause of all my pain. The discs are not badly degenerated enough to do anything like fusing yet {anyway thank goodnes}. He ordered another MRI and xrays {which I did today} to better determine the arthritis and if the necrotic {dead} tissue is "bad enough to be removed", which can be done by a general surgeon, not the neurosurgeon. {dead tissue in my body- but has to be "bad enough to be removed"?????!!!!} He is passing me on to the CPR - Center for Pain Relief -if they ever get around to the referal and the appointment setting. Meanwhile I will ahve to go back to my regular Dr. to get more Oxycontin and Vicodin as I am running out quickly. They don;t do much for me, but better than nothing...

That was my exciting week.

I have 5 dental appointments set up for the next several fridays for a new partial upper to be made, fitted and constructed as the anatamy of my mouth has changed enough the old one doesn;t fit anymore. {I know gross but not as gross as dead tissue!}

The Cardiologist shoved my appointment off a week from next week as he won't be in on the original date. HE will want to order a whole new battery of tests and stress test I am sure due to the new developments that showed up in the May hospital visit. He is New to my case, and so far has only been involved in the Premature Ventricular Complexes, following hte old diagnosis of tachycardia. {He was not the cardiologist I had before who I did not like his "bedside manner" from before}. At least teh new Dr. said with teh PVC "people who have them don't like them at all or how they feel with tehm, but at least it won't kill you". Pleasant and agreeable enough.                                                                               The other {insert "idiot" here} Dr. said "there is nothing wrong with your heart, BUT, OH, BY THE WAY you have a condition called "tachycardia" where the heart will sometimes beat irregularly and HERE, BY THE WAY, take this medication to stop it from doing that" {{NOTHING "WRONG" with my heart? was he kidding????!!! Then WHY do I have this "condition" and "need" this "medication"????!!!}} {{ANd WHY does my heart jump and flutter like it does????}} OH, AND he said I should "run 3 miles a day like I {he} do" so your heart will be in bettter condition" HELLO I'm severely asthmatic, need O2 at night, and can get out of breath walking to the mailbox and can;t even breath well enough to mow the small lawn we have!!! And now, my back can't take walking very well either let alone running!

Ok, SoapBox rant over on that Dr. The new cardiologist is a nice guy. A little old to be my "forever" cardiologist" but he'll do for now.

WEll hope you all had a great day and have a great night.

EDIT Seems I have top billing again, I'll warm up the Credit Card while you'all order up what you like!

Went to Alexandria just after noon today (had to wrap up my bill paying activities in Leesville first). The AC in the car hasn't worked in 8 years so it was a bit hot to say the least. I got caught up in slow traffic and in no time it was hot enough to fry bacon and eggs on the dash. It's supposed to be even hotter this weekend. I know where I'll be. In my trailer, where it's 70 degrees!

Good Evening, Chloe, I'll have a roast beef sandwich (open face, with some of the no-fat gravy on it Whistling), garden salad with vinagrette dressing, some of that sweet corn on the cob (since it's in season now), and a glass of Finger Lakes wine, please. Thank you! I got my laundry done, so now it's my time. Big SmileDinner

Rob, thanks for posting the layout photo (of hers) - good to see some of the overall view of things. Hers is coming along nicely - next is your layout's turn, right? Wink

Ray - ROFLMAO! Yep, I'd say 7 minutes sounds about right in most cases...Laugh Hee, hee... chuckle,... my side's almost hurting, chuckle... Lucky for you that it wasn't your group that she rode with!

Sawyer, will you be connecting your 4X8 to the 'hollow core' layout? Or do you have enough room in your room for that? Looks good - I have liked that Alkali Central layout for a while, myself.

TSF, I expect that with his amazing imagineering skills, DerJohn might trounce all the rest of us on the technical part for THAT Diner model, in whatever scale he chooses to build it! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Zan, I was kind thinking to myself that it had been a little since you were by the Diner. Careful about that accumulating those 'small orders'... they can mount up and suddenly you find that although your layout's only about 30-40square feet, you have enough buildings and ideas to cover about 3000 square feet. Oops Wink Any plan to show us yet (or did I sleep through that one...Zzz)? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Robby, another nice vid, and I'd agree - nice sound (and variations) to THAT set of horns. I haven't kept up with contemporary passenger trains (not having been on one in a while); do they have a modern equivalent to the observation cars (back in the heavyweight days), or do they just put whatever car they have in the last slot?

Galaxy - from your description of THAT former cardiologist, I'd say you have just a wee bit of reason to be ranting (like an elephant is a wee bit bigger than a mouse...). Hopefully, your new doctor(s) will make some progress to help you out. AngelAngel

Jeff, as bad as being out today was in your car, I'd agree that staying in the A/C would be the place to be.

We had some rough storms through this evening around the time I was out doing laundry, and there were a lot of lightning bolts, plus some of those long-rumbling-cloud-to-cloud ones as well. But it dropped almost 20 degrees (F) after the front moved through. Maybe you can get some of our front down your way soon, Jeff...

This afternoon at w**k was hectic, after a quiet morning. Fortunately, one client agreed to go with the parent to the ER to be voluntarily admitted (lots of time and paperw**k otherwise). Tomorrow (and Sunday) is on-call, and I'm hoping that will be very uneventful.

Had been fiddlin' around with a new plan for the 'expanded' version of my layout (about 15 X 20). Once I get it closer to finished, I'll post what I have.

Time to kick back tonight and have a good dinner. Dinner

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Turkey chili with steamed veggies, please.

***Robby, thanks, needs a ton of stacked lumber plus a weathered loader and/or a skid steer or two That video sounds great. Hey, did I count that consist correctly...1 engine per 4 cars? Am I missing something or does that seem like overkill (wasteful spending)?

***Galaxy, you are having way to much fun these days.Whistling

Had to break from raking with the tractor to jerry rig another of the attachment points to the lift. Wish we had a decent size tractor. Made progress out there and now I'm beat. Doubt I'll make it down to the train room tonight. Whew!

Thinking of renting a wheeled backhoe with a loader in the fall for the rest of the stump removal. They do not cost so much to rent and although slower than a trackhoe, they are more versatile. And most of the remaining stumps are not that big. From what I've read, because the trees were sheared at the base, a dozer is not considered a very good tool for removing them.

Sawyer, will you be connecting your 4X8 to the 'hollow core' layout? Or do you have enough room in your room for that? Looks good - I have liked that Alkali Central layout for a while, myself.

the hollow core door layout is actually a replacement for the 4x8. It's smaller and I think I can have much more fun running trains and modeling scenes than with my 4x8. I plan to do a better job of laying track this time though; part of the reason I'm replacing the 4x8 is it sucks for running trains

Evenin all. Doesn’t look like I’ll have to go back to work until next month. So, I think I’ll have all day tomorrow to work on Mom’s house I hope.

Robby- Had to laugh a little on the Amtrak vid. The next video they suggest as “the catch of the year” or something like that, is the same train elsewhere in the country. Chicago I think. BUT! Most important, that video has given me the excuse to use baggage car and my Great dome and I might as well throw in my regular dome car as well. Now, if I can find a current picture of a RPO I can justify my entire train, AND get an Amfleet car or two as well. I do see those here so I already planned that.

Galaxy- Though not from my personal experience, I can understand your pain. My Mother has arthritic mpain in her spine and she is in constant pain. Mom’s doc switched her from Vicodin to Norco something or something that sounds like Norco something. Vicodin for her was getting needed in stronger and more frequent doses as well. Ask your doc about the switch and if he thinks it will work for you and mix with your other meds.

Jim- If you get a chance, go back to Robby‘s Amtrak video and there will be to the right on those suggested video, at the top a video titled ….. Scratch that. Click here. Check out the last car. It should answer your question. I was surprised to see it myself. I don’t follow passenger trains much other than what I see either.

Welp, time to hit the hay. Prayers for those in need.

Evening all just a tall glass of root beer with a lot of ice and a piece of apple pie.Well it was an ok day here weather was good got some chores done. Me and the boy went and got our haircuts down at the barber shop this afternoon how can you beat $7.00 so after that we went back home and fired up the old Shovelhead and headed just up the road to cruise night. We have a big outlet mall here in town and the last Friday of ever month a local car club sponsors a cruise night. So being the Nomad is far from road worthy we decided to take the old girl out.It was fun as he doesn't ride with me that much and I hardly ride much at all any more with my bad knees  so it was a bit of a treat for both of us. So it being Friday it's also Pizza night, sorry Flo. So when we got home I jumped in the truck and went and picked up the Pizza's and as I'm standing there talking with the owner her husband walks in and he spots my PRR baseball cap. Hey you model HO? I said yup and we got to talking and his wife just rolled her eyes and said oh God! not another one. We both just kind of ignored her until she came up to us gave him a little smack on the back of thee had and pointed er finger at me and said you go home your wife and son are waiting to eat and it's getting cold train nut.

lol I had to laugh you never know where or when your going to meet a fellow model railroader.I think we really are the silent majority.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

***Allegheny2-6-6-2, that's a neat surprise encounter. So when are you two going to visit each others layouts?

Would a 0-6-0 goat work for hauling those 5 log cars, or would they require something more substantial? The price is attractive and they're kinda cute. The decoder & speaker would need to be small, but a small loco like that would hardly need big sound anyway, right? Doubt the wife would have a problem with it. Or for $30 more we could get a Mantua Mallet. No hurry, just window shopping online presently.

Good night y'all.

Hi Rob, just a quick answer to your question. Logging railroads ran anything from hand-me-downs to bespoke logging locos, so you can use either one. I´d go for the mallet - it is a hefty puller and has more of a logging look to it!

See you all later!

Allegheny2-6-6-2, neat story man! I got to talking N scale trains with the engineer at Tweetsie Railroad last week; I don't get much of a chance to talk to other model railroaders face to face, but you never know when you'll meet a fellow model railroader

- check your mail for a PM.  If any doubts about me , ask der or silver60 or cape Jim or Jeff or Ryan. Haven't been in the diner as often as before . Deb had 4 spinal ops. from lumbar to neck. She knows !

Cape Jim- when needing to replace that knuckle spring, use a dab or grease on the tip of a small screwdriver or knife ,about 3 coils in ,insert LONG part of spring onto the tip of the knuckle bend spring and put short end in place. Or is part of the problem that you can't see the the teensy tiny tips the the spring goes onto? Not laughing, as I've been there, done that.                                                               If anyone one needs coupler boxes, KD coupler springs or , horn hook couplers, let me know.

Good morning.  Off to work in a bit Blindfold.

I'm glad y'all liked the videos.   I don't go train hunting as much as I use to.   The biggest problem is........I need a train radio, very bad.   Now I have CSX and NS just minutes away, but I get tired of waiting for something to come by.

Rob.....I'm guessing they had those engines due to the CEO was in the one car.   If it was me, I would have had more engines Big Smile.   BUT...........I have a picture of the same train with two engines.   I guess they run two most of the time, and that one time they had three.

Todd.......The things you find on youtube Whistling.

I will pop back in later tonight.
