HOLY COW!!!! Just realized. Today is the third. Third of March. That means yesterday was the 2nd.Banged Head I didn't wish anybody a happy Texas Independence Day. Nor did I celebrate it in my usual small and inexpensive way. Paul was even in yesterday and it totaly slipped my mind. First time in I don't know how long. (tsk) guess with no one talking about it much around me anymore, one just doesn't pay attention.

Oh well life goes on. Day after tomorrow is the fifth so that's the day I'll turn the calender from Feb to March. Looking forward too that. Unless I forget then too.

Almost forgot again.   a late HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY  TEXAS!!!!! yesterday.

Good morning. It's 29 and sunny though a tad on the frigid side. The high will be in the high 50's and it will be partly cloudy.

Yesterday I changed out the batteries in the remaining six Tiki lights but I hadn't taken into account the possibility that some of the new batteries had possibly discharged while on the sales rack. Two of the lights ran down rather quickly last night. The batteries in them all came from the same four pack. The others were a mixed bag pretty much, some running down before 2 am while others continued almost to sunrise. The best performers were the two I initially changed out at first. So this morning I'm removing the batteries from all the lights and will recharge them then reinstall them into the lights. That should put them all on an equal footing and tonight we'll see what's what. In case you're wondering how I know when the lights ran down, let's just say I have a neighbor who's a serious night owl. He has an interest in this also as he wants to see if it will be advantageous for him to change out the batteries in his lights as he's commonly awake at those hours when they'll be on.

The Home Health nurse will come by today to change the dressing on my feet then I'll head out to get some grocery shopping done. I'll also be looking at some Athearn blue box kits I received in the mail yesterday. From a cursory inspection yesterday they appear to be in Great Northern livery. There is some passenger equipment in Chicago and Northwestern livery. Not exactly sure what I'll be able to do with it. All three cars need some minor work and they need to be weighted as they are exceedingly light. There were also two ATSF single dome tank cars still equipped with horn hook couplers. Those will of course be replaced with Kadee's as soon as I get some more.

Good morning all.

Gotta go do Mom's shopping today. Then the meetng tonight I tried to attend last night. MRR is looking not to good from here til oh, (inhales and exhales somewhat forcefully) maybe Saturday or Sunday after this? Hopefully I'll get to duck in for a bit there and there.

Lee- prayers for your girlfriend. Hope all stays well in the surgery and the recovery

Barry- Ah yes that's the name. "Poo-teen" Question To some around here when it was mentioned it sounded disgusting. To me it sounds delicious. Of course to some the Horseshoe sounds bad as well. It's just a version of your Poutine. Meat of choice, (originally a hamburger patty) on toast, covered with fries, covered with cheese sauce. Don't knock it til you tried it. Dinner Ooops, done flung a cravin' on myself.

Garry- Yes he is.Angel He was up and playing (well sorta), they took the drain tube out of his stomach and went for a wagon ride through the floor. Today, they do an Ultra scan or sound, to check the condition of the cyst on the pancreatic gland to see if it is draining as they hope.

DerJohn- Yes, it would be a bit long to post frequently, but it has been a long time, probably close to a year I think, since it was posted and we have quite a few new folks since then so I figured, new walls, new view, and no I don't mean a new view of the twins, why not.

Say, I've got a wee little bit of time before I have to leave. I might be able to work on the layout for an hour or two. I hope I don't loose track of time like usualTongue.

Have a Great Day!!!

Evening, I'll take fries topped with cheese curds and covered in beef gravy please. Heard about that tasty sounding creation tonight. Can't remember the name, but our NOTB buds probably know.

That---is Poutine, and I think that is a creation from Quebec or the maritimes for all I know. It is a wonderfully tasty little ditty(also annoys certain health nutsMischief).

Went to the Church tonight for the monthly meeting of the Administrative Council. This isn't WednesdayBanged Head. So I'll repeat the appearance tomorrow night.

Good morning all,

Sam, is that tub surround have the masonite backing?

Flip, the guys at the club run BLI without any problems.  It might be the size of your transformer/rectifier.  I have one BLI on my layout and it starts moving with very little power.

Espee welcome to the diner, I was like you, had to take a 15 year break before I got back into MRRing.

I had a huge box waiting for me when I got home; 24 Walther’s billboards.

This week looks weak for model railroading for me; girlfriend is going for surgery this Friday then it’s off to Detroit to visit with the kids.  Then Tuesday girlfriend is going back to the doctor for a checkup.  She won’t be able to drive for up to 3 weeks or until the doc removes the stitches in her ankle. So my free time will be to take care of her and her house & dogs.

Got quite a bit done on the bench work today. No pictures yet. Maybe in a day or two. I need to clean up the mess of all messes first. Maybe Monday since it's show and tell day. Mom's getting the roll off dumpster delivered Thursday AM so I'll be rather busy for the next SEVERAL days, WHICH, by the way is supposed to be beautifulBig Smile.

I'm going to have a few, "what would you do"questions soon. Some things that are coming up I can see a couple of ways of doing them and can't decide. I forgot what they were already, but as I go I'll run into them again and ask then I suppose.

Jeff- Glad you had a good report today. You got me thinking of the batteries in our outdoor solar light things. Too cold now.

PC- I'm still waiting for some progress reports on the layout. I've started all over again and if you're not careful I'll pass you up Hoss.

Sam- I'd give it a shot. Hit some piece with different colors, see how the texture works. You never know, might just look great.

Ray- Can't stand the phone myself (sorry PC. Nothing personal) As a device to communicate important info, it's fine. To jubber jabber on no. It's an intrusion. Don't you just love it when you see someone and they ask, "why didn't you answer the phone?" "Because I didn't want too" I'd just as soon drive to the LHS and see if they have the bottle of paint than call. Now I have one strapped to me like a gun, but not by my choice, trust meGrumpy.

Paul- Glad to hear from you and real glad to hear Mary Ann's doing good.

BAMA!- How could we forget. Consider yourself added

DerJohn- Tower looks great. Redheads? That was some pertinent information I was denied. (you gotta admit the winker would be pretty nice to be twins though)

 OW! OK Vinnie I'm leaving!

Prayers for those in need

ToddM, Ray: So far I've heard nothing major --- my doctor will see me on Friday and then we will know. As long as I've not heard anything by tomorrow night I'll be sort of out of the woods so to speak. Whistling

I'm busy cleaning cat fluff out'n the keyboard again----he had to go step-step-stepping then laying on the keyboard again. This DELL has taken all kindsa headbutts to the screen, cat sitting on keyboard cleaning himself(that is, until I move the silly one OFF the keyboardWhistling) cat leaping from bookcase--twice--and landing ON the keyboard, and the only thing I have to do is clean the cat fluff off the keyboard. Must say something about a laptop that put up with all this rigmarolWhistling

So who heard about that Amtrak train hitting the firetruck in Detroit? And to think that they'd know better...

Robby, good luck, and I hope you get a good call.

Ulrich: Don't forget Eric.
Speaking of Eric, anyone seen/heard from him lately?

Garry, sorry to hear about the cat. Angel

Sam, I bet he had fun with the 3 PL42s, especially if they were all online, although I doubt it. And I saw it coming back down on X233. Also, is it just a fuel move, or is it also an equipment swap? Because I think all but one of the sets go up on the 2300 trains and get fueled, but not on weekends, since they took the fuel pad out of BH a few years ago.
And I know it's kinda random, but would you happen to know how many CIIIs are stored in BH? I think it's 24, but I'm not sure.
And all I can say about that bridge strike is, DOH!!

Jim, did YOU notice the April Fools joke? Cause I know a lot of other people missed it, although I though it was pretty obvious...

Good evening folks:

Todd:

DerJohn- I do believe the first picture of the lady holding the coffee cup is Flo. The third picture is Janie, the youngest and the winker is one of the twins either Zoe or Chloe. They look the same you know so I guess they figured one picture would suffice. Not sure though because as we ALL know, Vinnie doesn't let you get a real good look at them when they're bending ...., er I mean, working .
But thought the twins were red heads, IIRC!   Differing streams in the Tradition, maybe the work of a redactor. Clown Smile,Wink, & Grin Yep,Vinnie even trains the kitchen staff to work upright!

Thanks for posting that personnel reminder -  it could get tired if we used it in our welcome package; but every now and then, as you  have now, it's a great resource!Thumbs Up

Ray:

as I do stop lighting the stove when the temps start getting into the 40's outside.  Makes the house too warm for comfort.
...that's our dilemma just about now. I was going to let the fire die this pm as the house is a bit too warm downstairs for real comfort; but it turned suddenly colder late afternoon, and I'm glad there were enough embers to re-start with no trouble at all. It will have to take its chances tomorrow 'though as we will be to Town for most of the day. (First time to the LHS since before Christmas -Yeah!!)

Jeff: I just checked the batteries in my camera, and was pleased to see they are NiMH. Now the ones around the pond are anyone's guess, but my guess based on performance is that the WallyMart ones are NiMH as well.

ESP: Many changes in what's available,a nd in building/scenicing techniques since you last worked on that layout - as I expect you've gathered. BTW, what scale/Roads/era/location? Stuff like that enquiring minds need to know.Approve

I see from the clock lower right of the computer screen that it's bed time yet again. I want to "plant" that light standard for the sand blower, so I'll say  Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Good Evening Everyone,

Trainman Sam, Blownout Cylinder, howmus, Tmarsh, der5997 and anyone I might have missed, thank you for the warm welcome. To give you all a little background on myself, I just recently got back into the MRR hobby after about a 20 year departure. Fortunately I was able to store my unfinished layout for all those years and finally decided to set it back up and try to finish it. Its nothing elaborate, just something I started a while back as a kind of mock up for the one day when I am able to build a decent size layout. I figured I would hone my skills and see what worked for me on a smaller layout and then apply it to the larger one. Right now I have it setup in the house but it quickly became evident that I need to find a more suitable home for it. It's looking like the cellar will be the best choice. So in order to make room for the layout I had to do some serious cleaning and organizing. I also ended up building the wife a laundry room during the reorganization period. It still not done but close. Once I get the laundry room finished then I can move a lot of the stuff that is temporarily stored where the layout is going to live out of the way. So I guess at least it provides a little motivation.

I also would like to say that some of the work I see posted on here by you guys is really inspirational. There are seem really talented folks here. Oh well, its getting late. Time to go.

Evening all, stopping in for the night.  Well, my problem with the machine shop was resolved today, the heads were ready just before lunch so i was able to at least partially put that engine back together.  Still isn't finished, but the shop owner that I'm doing the work for said that he may finish it up later this week.  Either way it goes, I sitll get paid for it, just would have been nice to have had the heads in this morning so that the vehicle would have been finished this evening before I headed out.  Oh well, c'est la vie.

Chloe, I'll have a cheesesteak sandwich with an order of fries and a RBF.  I'm going to hang out in the corner booth and work on my MB Klien wishlist, Amy approved of me making one so that "when I'm deserving" she can procure something off it.

Jeff, glad to hear that your feet are doing better.

By the way, y'all add my name to the roster of "regulars", I'm Eddie, from Alabama.

Garry- Sorry about your lose. Know how it feels.

Lee- I run dc with no sound in any other engine. This BLI is dc with sound. As such,  it takes 7 volts to get it going. If there are any other locos on the layout, they will be running into the BLI before it moves.

Blessings and prayers for all.

Hey, I DID NOT bring the catapult in here this time... and will not get anywhere NEAR it!

Catapult? What catapult! What's that Vinnie? You just crunched it up into tiny pieces out back? Well, that takes care of that.

Didn't Vinnie get rid of 35 of those catapaults recently? And they all had Sam's name on 'em----

Hey, I didn't bring any of those, how my name got on them, someone else knows...

But I did see Vinnie setting up one of these in the corner...

He also said something about "miniature explosives"???

EDIT: Looks like I got Top Honors!  Eat up everyone!  It's on...  my tab!  I wasn't gonna fall for that one again!

Good evening. It's current 47. The low tonight will be 33 and partly cloudy.

Had a busy morning at the docs office. They went through the usual thorough cleaning of the feet and the usual assessment of the wounds then did a series of tests to ascertain how much oxygen was present in my feet. If there wasn't enough I would have to be set up for treatments via hyperbaric therapy. It seems the tests came out in my favor and I won't have to go for those treatments. Part of the test (15 minutes) was done while breathing ordinary room air. The second part (5 minutes and 10 minutes) was done while breathing pure oxygen. After I finished there I came back home and changed out the NiCd batteries in the remaining yard lights with NiMH batteries. One of my neighbors was so impressed with results of the test that he's going to change out the batteries in his too. He only has a few so it won't cost as much as mine did.

Afternoon folks!

Zoe I'll have peice of the Pecan pie to hold me over to supper.  No!  I had nothing to do with those catapults and the resulting mess!  You can ask Vinnie if you like......  No it won't spoil my dinner, I won't be having THAT for a couple of hours....  Oh and a cup of decafe to wash it down, Thanks!  I'll be sitting at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

I have done a little w*rk on the engine house today.  Still waiting for some Grandtline windows to arrive for the main building, so I am fiddling with the workshop attached to it.  Photos by the weekend hopefully.

Have you thought about TracFone, or some other prepaid cell phone?

Nope.  I hate the d@mn things!  I have trouble hearing on them unless I get a phone set up for T-cell (hearing impaired) and they are quite a bit more than $50.  More like $200 or $300.  I ain't gonna spend THAT much money on something I wouldn't use anyway.  If I had 1000 minutes, ten years from now I

I have a cell phone that I hate using. I know know you feel. I'd rather have a CB radio in my truck than a cell phone.

Hello again!

Has anyone ever heard of using tub surround for MRR?  I just got a bunch from my FIL, and it seems like if I were to paint it a matte black, it would probably pass for blacktop?!  I don't know... I'll try it with the "Diner"  and try to get pics.  (That is, if-and-when I get the Diner fitted, painted, and assembled!)mah-na mah-na...  Anyone else have any suggestions?  The material is very thin, I can't tell what type of material... (I'd guess it was plastic, or vinyl, not sure.  One side of it is smooth, while the other (the finished side) is about the consistancy of asphalt, or a smoothed out gravel road.  I guess if I painted it tan it could pass as stucco...

Hey, I DID NOT bring the catapult in here this time... and will not get anywhere NEAR it!  No more food fights for me, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Chloe, may I please have a refill on the RBF?  Thanks!

If I had 1000 minutes, ten years from now I would still have oh around 1000 minutes. Whistling  The last one I had I probably turned on 8 or 9 times in the dozen or so years I had it.  If I want to send someone an email, I can do it right here on the G5 or the Mac laptop, or my Mac Mini.  I don't feel a need to text while driving..........  And I have a camera that can actually take good pictures, so there isn't much I would have any use for with a cell phone.  In fact most days I sit here and think how nice it would be not to have the regular type, old fashioned, blasted, phone I have sitting right here next to me.  What?  No I don't need the SoapBox, I'll be quiet.......Wink

I have about enough wood to keep the stove going for the rest of the week.  My heat bill should get considerably higher after THAT.  Usually March is my highest bill for gas as I do stop lighting the stove when the temps start getting into the 40's outside.  Makes the house too warm for comfort.

OK, back to getting something useful done!

Later!

Todd and Robby I solved my problem with the cell phone.....  I got rid of it!  Figured in a decade I used it two or three times.  So I figured paying close to $20 a month for something I never used was rather stupid, but hey I got 25 FREE minutes every month!!!

Have you thought about TracFone, or some other prepaid cell phone?  I have TracFone, and got the "Double Minutes For Life" option (which looks to be standard anymore) I switched from AT&T...  I bought 450 minutes in December (late in the month) and got 450 free, so wound up at 900, plus the free 250 that came with it... So I started with just over 1000 minutes, and I still have 600 some left two months later.  All for the price of I think it was $80 for the phone (I could have gotten it cheaper, but needed it pronto) and the 450 minutes was $80 as well, but you get two for one!  The phone I got is now available for $50, not too bad for a slide phone...  I actually like it!  WHOA, maybe I oughta work for them... NOT!  Lol

Robby- Nice looking boxcar!  How much you charge for custom work?  Send in PM if you prefer...  I have a couple boxcars that just look TOO new and shiny, instead of road-weary!

Chloe, may I please have the Super-Deluxe-Barry-Special with an extra helping of the "Cajun Spicy Curly Fries" along with a RBF el grande, and a Barry Slice of Pecan Pie?  Thank you!

WHAT???  Why is EVERYBODY staring at ME???  Can't I order pie?  Or does that reputation HAVE to stick with me for the rest of eternity???  MAN, you bring in half a dozen catapults and they NEVER let you live it down...

What's that Chloe?  Oh, I'll be in the corner booth... yes, I will be VERY careful to avoid Vinnie's "Death Stare"...  I'm sure he hasn't forgoten the restraining order in effect!  If I don't restrain, he creates the pain...

Anyhow, I had another run-in with the two roadformen today!  Much better experience!  They did NOT bother me as I entered NY Penn Station this time!  I believe it is because I handled all their questions with ease this time!   What five weeks of trainhandling won't get you!

Gotta go, dinner at the In-Laws in a few minutes... YES I am STILL hungry after the Barry Sized meal!

Adios for now muchachos!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Hi Gang: It's been a while for sure. Der said that some of you were asking about Mary Ann and myself. Well Mary Ann is doing fine. She did her morning at dialysis today and is now taking a nap. That dialysis really takes it out of you, ( pun not intended, but it works).

I'm still working more then before I retired. It is due to running the ranch full time now but also I'm getting more projects lined up that I've been thinking about for some time. I bought an old pull behind road grader that needs some tender loving care. I sharpened the cutting edge and it does a really good job pulled behind one of the tractors. We have 2+ miles of road on our place and our sons place out west of here. The grader will make it much easier to maintain and at a much improved condition. I'm also going to restore it to as close to original as possible and take it to the Historical Construction Equipment Associations convention. That will be in a couple of years. As for MRRing not much has been done. The HO is still being used for storage of guns and VHS tapes. I haven't been able to work on the 7 1/2 inch gauge eather. One of these days soon I'll just have to say I'm taking some time off and get to it.

Garry I'm sorry to hear about your kitten. Those little devels do grow on you. We lost our oldest dog a couple of months ago. She was around 17 or 18 years old. I also had to put down a cow the other day. Of course life goes on as He planned.

Well I,m going to go and join Mary Ann. ROFs perogative to grab a nap.

My best to everyone.

Rob, the Bachmann low end decoders are the low end LENZ decoders, 28 speed step, not very handy for slow speeds.  I would go with a Digitrax Zephyr and the digitrax 123 decoders start at $19.

Flip, I haven’t had any issues running DC and DCC w/sound locomotives on the same track.

Garry, sorry to hear about your cat.  Mine passed a few years back at 19.

Since Ulrich started the roster it got me thinking. I thought I'd dig out and bring this in since we have quite a few new diners since the last time someone posted it. Can't remember who, Jim maybe? Anyway, just to give you an idea of how this place works this is what I saved from some time ago-

For everyone's general info, the usual 'schedule' for our virtual servers is Zoe - breakfast shift and weekdays, Chloe - dinner and night shift on weekdays, and on the weekend it could be Janie or Flo or (what's the newer gal's name, folks?) (edit by Todd: I think she couldn't handle some of the pie fights and quit)... But all of that is subject to change if the twins (Zoe and Chloe) need to cover for one of the other servers. The Diner's cook can fix most anything you can describe (depending on how game you are to eat it if it's a new dish). There's several booths, including one on the corner window, with a good view of the tracks for trainfanning, plus several tables and the usual counter. In the back there's a pool table and (might need some dusting off) a simple RR layout table, if you don't have company to talk with (like in the wee hours of the morning).

Oh, one other thing - if you post the first post for a page (called the Top Of Page or TOP honors), you get to pay for the virtual food and beverage bill for that page. Zoe and Chloe will keep a tab for you, but don't get too late in paying, 'cause you don't want to have to talk with their cousin Vinnie (if you know what I mean...). The Diner gets tank carloads shipped in of virtual OJ, courtesy of our Diner Ed, who has an orange grove in his place SOTB (south of the border, in Mexico, not to be confused with SOTB as described by our Canadian Diners in referring to what we call the United States)

And just because a Diner patron is not moving, it doesn't mean that he or she has deceased on the premises. Some have been know to doze off for a few days (uh, Duke?...) after working hard at their day jobs.

If you're new to the Diner, it never hurts to fill the other Diners in on what kind of MRR'ing you are into - like scale, modeling freelance or a particular prototype, kind of layout you are designing or building, etc. We're a nosy friendly bunch, and it's fine to share how your day (MRR'ing stuff or other) has been, and we don't push religion or prayer, but if you want 'em, there are several of us who'll put in some for your needs.

And keep in mind that this is a family establishment, including some of our fine teenage MR'ers, so watch your language, or Vinnie and Chloe will have the bar soap out for ya.
