Remember the boxcar I referred to as being all canary yellow? Now it has a roof, doors and trim that are colored 'cool lava'. It won't be looking like yhis for long though for my devious mind is working on a weathering scheme for it. I used 'Rusted rail' on the other cars but this one will have a couple of deeper shades. I'll be working some 'Rusted earth' and 'Rustica' as well.

Honey Dew Melon, please.

Thanks for the info on roller VS friction. Interesting! Probably going to run steam & diesel on my 100% fictional layout so will try matching the cars I have with close replacement trucks, (or whatever I can get to fit).

Sam, sounds like a great day of trainhandling! As for the rails being slippery, just wait till leaf season... Luckily, you're on the Newark side, so it won't be as bad. I hear THAT when it's really bad, they don't stop at Short Hills, or they can't make the WB grade up to Summit!
BTW, nice avatar!

Sorry, Chris, I'm not a daughter or a dad either, so I can't help you with THAT

DerJohn- Yep about the AquaTrack THAT Sam metioned. Pretty cool thing. I saw it in Summit back in November (too dark to get a photo, not to mention THAT there was a set of Arrows blocking my view), although it was just sitting in the station, not in action.

I'm hoping for a delay tomorrow, MAYBE closing if we're lucky. Even if not, they're predicting snow in FEET for Thursday and Friday, so we'll see.

Since Barry is buying, guess I'l have 7 of those humongo burgers!!

Chris, On the BN hopper, it looks like atlas wanted them to be ex-NP ones and the ex-GN ones had the roller bearings. By some irony a set of athearn trucks broke on me (trying to pull the wheelset to ream and install metal wheelsets) recently. I may be intrested, if I can find a car that will work with 70-ton trucks (I'm thinking a UP 50' gon with a build date in the early 60s might be the only one).

Sam, it has, but I'm waiting for the it to clear. (bank's idea)

I got those Kato drive put back together after re-painting the frames a bit. Can't see the coupler pocket mounting pad anymore. I'm going to file the weights a bit so that I can glue them to the frames and not have them sticking to the shell. They move around sometimes and I don't want them messing up any decoders.

Evening all.

Havent' been in to catch up yet, because my dad took us to get ice cream. In the middle of a blizzard. But the good news is we weren't the only ones there.

Wow. I step in the door, and all I see is a picture of a giant marshmallow on top of an outhouse. Okey dokey then...

Everybody, watch out for the skunk.

This oughta get him moving...hope he doesn't "cut loose" from laughing too hard...

Here's what the real M. Feder and Sons, ex-Rock Island RR roundhouse looked like:

Here's what my shorter, condensed version is looking like so far:

I had a close-up of the left (mostly completed) side...but then I saw something THAT the camera found, and I didn't...a huge GAP between roof and wall!!!!! Banged HeadAngrySoapBoxDisapproveShockBlack EyeDunce

HOW in the brackin-frack THAT happened...I haven't the foggiest. The whole "fit and finish" on this thing has been...disappointing. Not sure if it's old molds, imprecise Chinese manufacturing, or what... but I'm doing a lot more "custom fitting" than I thought I would.

Chloe? Janie? Flo? Zoe? Whomever, whichever... a bucket of 7-Up, a roll of Rollaids, a tube of Preperation H, and a bottle of aspirin please....

Der John said:

"Good evening all: A hot chocolate, hold the whipped cream please Chloe."

And Der John said: "Garry: Glad you liked the spiffy biffy! Here's  another. Since you mentioned two holers, here's  the non-splinter prone version! BTW, Double Headers? What  kind of parties do you go to! Mischief"

Der John ... Chloe is still holding the whipped cream. Can she put it down now?

Regarding outhouses, I thought Canadian outhouses looked like this photo instead of those spiffy biffies.

Also, Der John.  The two hole could be called a "dual stool".   ... You asked what kind of parties I attend, but next thing I saw you were talking about vasoline. Careful there John. I'm not going there.

Dick ... I'm really glad you are making progress on your layout.

Everybody, watch out for the skunk.

Good Evening All,

Still sn*wing/sleeting/raining so we'll see what we have tomorrow. Roads were ok on the way home but I opted not to do the museum thing tonight as it's bound to be slippery when we normally knock off round 10pm.  Didn't do much at the house either but it'll be another early day tomorrow morning.

The friction bearing ban is still rigorously enforced. When we were given the two 44 tonners by Electric Boat we needed to move them from Groton to Danbury it took months and the intervention of former Congresswoman Nancy Johnson to get the necessary permissions and exemptions for the move. Most of the rolling stock we've had to have trucked in at great expense. Just getting the equipment blue carded so they would be legal on a line has been beyond our capabilities and that's one of the reasons we only operate in our own switch yard.

I was cruising out in the big yard earlier and I was struck at how negative and hostile some of the denizens of the big room are. Don't see any necessity for it and i much prefer the company here in the diner.

Time to get some Z's - catch y'all later.   J.R.

There's just a little TOO MUCH "togetherness" with THAT arrangement!!!!!!

Thanks for posting that photo of the grain car

They get quite a few of 'em into Cedar Rapids. Quaker Oats gets a lot, the former National Oats (home of 3-Minute brand oats) now owned by Ralston Foods...might. It used to be mostly the bright red "Canada" hoppers. Around the mid 90's, the Saskatchewan (sp!), Calgary, and other assorted Canadian hoppers started showing up.

Dick:
who built the Outhouse that is just outside the back door, did I hear someone say Der John ?
  Guilty as charged! Clown

All these spiffy biffys remind me of the night the Cedar Rapids Model RR Society scratch built outhouses, in HO scale. It was a "learning project" for us as we geared-up to tackle the many structures of Usher's Ferry Historical Villiage. I drew plans for every darned building (still got 'em!). We divied-up the structures...they all looked pretty darn good. Then the Flood of '08 ruined the villiage and destroyed our little display layout in the former Olin, Iowa Millwaukee Road depot... But oh what a time we did have making them outhouses! IIRC, seems like one of the guys built an interior in his... I was just happy to get four walls to square up, and the roof to fit nicely!

RAY's upside-down wall got me thinking...always a dangerous thing. On the box for the Atlas roundhouse, they show the short wall, above the big doors, with the windows "down," or toward the lower roof. The instructions show the same wall with the windows "up," or toward the large roof. Which one is right? In my case, it don't matter, I'm grinding off the window frame, grinding down the clapboard siding, and covering it all with Campbell's correugated alluminumuminum!

Updated M. Feder and Son's ex-Rock Island RR roundhouse pics coming....soon.

You've been warned!

Sawyer......I will probably do the GP-30 just plain and simple.   Just some dirt/grime.  The hopper, probably like Chris showed.  That will be easy to do.

ah. awesome, looking forward to seeing the results!

man, today going to rugby practice I had the PERFECT shot of that BN hopper but my dang phone suddenly restarted!
practice was great though. in one drill where we could tackle the coaches (we were receiving kickoffs) one of our coaches who plays rugby for USC got it and I ran him down at the sideline and tackled him hard and everyone was like "way to go man!" and the coach I tackled was like "good tackle" lol.

Good Evening Diners!

Glad to see Chloe back as that fellow named Rocky never seemed to deliver all of your food order to the table and there was always a shortage of cutlery.

Well not much new in the GWN. Watching a lot of the games on TV especially the skating. The harbour scene is slowly taking shape on the Mortimer sub and perhaps I'll be ready to do the water in the harbour in a week or two. I'm going to use WS Realistic Water as that is the stuff I have on hand. I did manage to find a Cornerstone Rocky Point Lighthouse kit but had to get it from Trainworld. It is sold out at Walthers so the LHS couldn't even order one. I also ordered a MP Mikado in N scale as they still had some for $50. The same loco at the LHS is $195. Not surprising they don't seem to be selling many.

The telie is calling me so I had better sign off.

Yes, we suffer through what is called "Leaf Season" the above link as a pic of it in action!  It is basically a huge power washer attached to a water tanker, pushed by any motive power available!

To answer your other question, NO I don’t think they are required to be underground, I was just assuming… WHUPS!

Vincent- has the letter been received as of yet? If not, should be there tomorrow.

Well, I am off to hit the rack! I’ll see you guys, and gals, tomorrow!

I know some people will cringe when I say this; I use Vaseline on running gear applied with one of those white micro-brushes or a tooth pick.  The Vaseline stays put, doesn't drip into places it shouldn't and will last the lifetime of the locomotive.
I agree with a grease over oil. I've lately taken to filling the truck gear trains with white grease from our garage door installation. I use a modified insulin syringe.

Chris: Thanks for posting that photo of the grain car. I was going to say to Robby that it should be a lighter rather than a heavier touch, but your pic is worth 990 words more than that!Thumbs Up

Ray:

I managed to put on the 6" x 6" framing into one of the sides of the Engine house upside down (Shingles on the outside are wrong side up) so I will be making a couple modifications to how the walls were going to be to "correct" the situation.
...did a "what was I thinking" myself this evening while the ‘puter booted up. I thought I needed to cut off about 3 rungs of the caged ladder at the top, where it exits onto the roof of the sand bin. The cutting was easy, but I had the thing upside down, and now have to replace 3 tiny rungs.Banged Head
To help keep those little difficulties to a minimum, I built a magnet car for the MOW train:
great idea, thanks. Now I know how to find several coupler pins that are AWOL. BTW, at about what scale speed would your MOW run that car?

Sam: Yeah!! on the train handling today. Good feeling, yes?

With just a light misting, the rails become more slippery than usual, so it becomes harder to run the train on time. (Only harder, NOT impossible, as the seasoned engineers prove every time there is a rain storm!
do you get problems in the Fall with leaves on the track? That's a seasonal reason in the UK for late running, I understand.
they wouldn't have to go through the EPA to have a tank installed in-ground!
Is an  in-ground fuel tank a requirement now? Mine are going to all be above ground, like the Harbour grace Port Authority one here , because I like the look, and it fills up a trackside service area with "stuff".Approve

Rob:

***Chris, as for the friction bearing vs. roller bearing trucks, have not found out yet, uless I spaced out and missed an answer.
If Jeff can confirm that the trucks he just weathered are indeed roller baring, then my guess is that the more modern and heavier cars would have the roller trucks, and the older and lighter the friction. Ah, I see Vincent has given the accurate goods.Thumbs Up

PC: Good to hear that Mrs. C is recovering well. Florida next week - hope she has her long johns packed. Big Smile

I'm off to see if I can remedy the ladder rung situation. I'm not going to let this get to me.

Then it will be bed time again. So, Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

Good evening, did I hear right? Meatloaf was here earlier? Sorry I missed him... I like some of his stuff, then again his "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is one of THE most over-played rock songs in the history of recorded music...

Wow, what a week so far... I mean, we had the King of Prussia just a few days ago, and tonight...Meatloaf Wow!!!

Hey ROB? I hear ya on the advice/desires but not putting the money where the MIL's mouth is... If it's any consolation, for my MIL, I'd be willing to find the bucks. Now for my SIL on the other hand...I'd go and find her a blasting cap to chew on...ShockDead I see VINCENT provided a good summary on the friction vs. roller bearing thing.

THAT said, I ordered a pair of roller bearing trucks for my Atlas BN cement hopper (last fall, finally got 'em)...because I thought the "no friction bearing cars in interchange" applied to ALL as-of '91... BUT I can't for the life of me figure out where I got THAT idea. Per VINCENT's info, I could leave it as-is since my era ends in the early fall of '93. BUT, the car card/waybills for the friction bearing cars (99.9% homeroad) will still have the 40 mph speed restriction called for in the CNW timetables of the era. Even THAT is something of a moot point... I'll be modeling a 10 mph industrial branch!

Uh, by the way, anybody need a pair of Atlas 70 ton friction-bearing trucks??? Since I got the roller bearing set, I may as well go ahead with the change-out.

Speaking of BN and VINCENT: Hey, no sweat Guy...glad you can use it. And yup, looks pretty basic. The Athearn 62' tanks do show up on "theBay" pretty often. I hacked one up to make a CGW tank car a few years back and have been tempted to try another, so I look for the "raw material" from time to time.

PC: Glad Mrs. PC is still doing well...will continue to "send out good vibes" for her.

BARRY (I think it was): People forget how to drive in snow and on ice? Really??? Wow.... Smile,Wink, & Grin I was starting to think it was just an Iowa thing...DisapproveSoapBox

I'll yield the floor... have a seat at the RC AFTER looking for any critters, whoopie cushions, or other "disturbances in the Force..."

Hey all!

How do?

Had to take the wife back to the docs ttoday for a checkup.  Everything looks good, and she's still planning to go to Florida on Thursday.  The doc's say she'll be fine for that.  She's rebounding really well!

Thanks for all the prayers folks!  I know they're helping!

PC- Soooooo glad to hear from you I was getting a bit worried something was wrong with the wife. Yesterday I was going to look for an E-mail or at least PM you but got involved with multiple unexpected things until work time. Then when I read your post I thought my fears were confirmed. I'm so happy to hear she's OK now. Whew. Other than the problems they just fixed, how is it going for her in the weight loss? Sure doesn't seem like 5 weeks.

Yeah, I know I've been MIA lately.....life keeps getting in the way, ya know?  The weight loss has gone well.  30lbs so far, and thats while she's been less active some of that time during recovery.  By the ttime she gets back she ought to be attacking the treadmill and execise bike with a vengence!

Rob, Friction bearing trucks were banned from interchange service on 1/1/91 for cars carrying hazardous materials (tanks and chemical hoppers perhaps). All other non-hazardous carrying cars equipped with friction bearings were banned from interchange on 1/1/94. Cars with converted friction to roller bearing side-frames were banned from interchange on 1/1/95 (hot bearing detectors couldn't read them).

There were some instances of exemptions granted for shippers in "hardship circumstances" who could not comply with these dates. So, some cars did linger a little longer in interchange after the actual deadline dates. Roller bearing trucks started popping up in the early 1900s, most cars started coming with them in the late 50s-60s.

Chris, Thanks for the PDF. It looks fairly easy to do and I have the necissary parts in my scrap box. I just have to get the neccessary undecored tank cars (athearn 40' and 62')

Good evening gents, been busy big time on the layout, a lot of progress. I have the north corner mountain all built and scenery done. If I had waited until after I laid tracks and some buildings etc., I would never have reached the ares without causing an earthquake. Now I am working on the mountains and scenery along the west and south walls.

It just started to snow again, coming down pretty good. We have two storms coming at us, the first is here now, the 2nd will hit us on Thursday courtesy of Texas, no sun until probably next Monday, so that bodes well for 100% MRR time.

I see we had Meatloaf for Supper tonight, not much remaining though, and who built the Outhouse that is just outside the back door, did I hear someone say Der John ?

LOL, Rob THAT shot was from the first time I used the car. I was shocked to see how much stuff was on and near the tracks THAT could have gotten in the wrong spot on a loco!  I run it every couple of months on average, usually before I have guests come over to the house to see the layout.  Normally I get no metal at all picked up by the car, which is the way I like it. Wink

The magnet was one from a set of magnets I bought with a Micro-Mark assembly jig to keep walls straight and such.  Most any thin magnet that can fit without shorting the rails would do the job.

Later!

It's 42 and dry for the moment. There's a good chance of rain today and a snow storm tonight. My doctors appoint went well enough. The wound on my right foot is just a tiny pinhole now. The wounds on two of my left toes however are proving to be somewhat uncooperative. Arthritis has settled into the joints resulting in hammertoe. The doc thinks he sees a sign of a little cellulitis so he's put me on bactrim and cipro again. Antibiotics for those who don't recognize the names. UPS was to pick up the wound vac from my parent's place yesterday as they were going to be there all day. Well, nobody had showed by 5 pm so they stepped out for 45 minutes. Guess who showed up while they were gone? So today when I went down there the box containing the aforementioned vac was still there. My mother was there in case they showed again but she had to go out to male a bank deposit. Fortunately I was there this time. UPS showed up just 20 minutes after she left. I showed the guy the box, he slapped a label on it and out the door it went. Never have I been happier to see the back side of a piece of medical equipment and I hope I never see one of those things again. Maybe a littlle later today I'll get back to working on those freight cars. I have to relocate the brake wheels on two of them and the third needs some serious attention as it's an unblemished canary yellow from top to bottom. No way can I let that state of affairs continue unchanged.

Sawyer, I wonder about that green character myself... The plain 90's scheme isn't my favorite, but at least it's BN.

yeah man.

Philip, dern, whata scare man! Glad it all ended good thoguh.

Chris, that's actually what it's spotted in front of, a fertilizer dealer; which is funny because I thought that place was all closed up! and there doesn't seem to be any way to unload it.

Robby, looks like some good weathering fodder you picked up; lookign forward tos eeing how you weather them!

Well, rugby practice tonight!

SAM: Congrats on the train-handling! I'd probably be filling a notebook with "marks" to get the doors at the right places on the platforms. E-mail (through the forum's program) is enroute RE: the tanker article.

ROB (Cedarstrand): Did you ever get the info you was looking for on friction bearing vs. roller bearing trucks??? I've been kinda skimming through this stuff the past couple of days.

Hey JOE? If you need something to do...I'll let you write the 'graph (or two) for the both of the dad/daughter dances I covered Saturday evening. I'm at a total loss on a "catchy, witty, sophisticated, enlightened, "I'm just so smart because I'm a reporter and you're not," way to write this. I'm at a loss. I have no point of reference. I've never been a daughter...and I'm not a dad.

Welp, back at it, THAT needs some content, so I'd best make a phone call or two...

PC- Heck of a scary way to awaken. Happy that everything worked out.

Jerry. Shows that a good Dad has a good son.

Jeff / JR - That GN car I got is a Mantua with original H H  couplers. Used a nail clipper, modified the coupler and it hooked to a loco and went for a trip. No problem.

Ray- nice easy trick with the magnet. Smart idea.

Prayers for all.

Good afternoon everyone!

I got a good day of train handling in today! I ran all the trains to within three minutes of the schedule! My go-home train was actually EARLY!!! I only had one station where I overshot the platform, but I held the doors closed until the Conductor reached the doors that were off… Won’t do that again! The reason I am so happy about running well today is due to the “light misting” rain we are receiving. With just a light misting, the rails become more slippery than usual, so it becomes harder to run the train on time. (Only harder, NOT impossible, as the seasoned engineers prove every time there is a rain storm!

PC- REALLY glad to hear Mrs. PC is doing well!!! AngelApproveSmile,Wink, & GrinApproveAngel

ChrisEight Ball-“Was it you (or Sam?) who got a Mini Cooper? THAT's Loving Wife's other collecting frenzy…” THAT was me! I have bought her a Mini Cooper and a SMART Car… Next little surprise will be several limo’s (if and when I find them) so that there will be “Susan’s Super Saucy Transportation Services” on the layout! Thought that would be quite the unique name for a Limo company!Wink

ChrisEight Ball- I’d love to have the article for the fuel tanker as well, please? Although, how funny would it look in use on a line that is only Sixteen Miles long?! Actually, come to think of it, they COULD use it! The way it would work is this: The New Hope & Ivyland Railroad would have a contract with a diesel fuel supplier that gives them a discount for buying in bulk. By going the route of having the excess fuel in the tender, they wouldn’t have to go through the EPA to have a tank installed in-ground! (Is it me? Or does my layout get more complicated with every turn I take? Lol

Lee- There has to be some axiom for THAT, right? MischiefHeeheeheeWhistling

Robby- I forget, did I ask if you do paint jobs??? I’m still looking for someone to convert my fleet…

Ray- was that a specific magnet you used, or just a simple store bought for the MoW Flat car?

OH GREAT! The weather guessers have just called for a “BL!ZZARD” for Thursday! Of course, it would HAVE to happen on my relief days!!!AngryGrumpy

Chloe, may I please have a large RBF?  Thank you!  I'll be in one of the unoccupied booths, hopefully neither the skunk or opossum are sleeping under the bench...

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!
