Todd- Just to set the record straight, I am no stranger to cold , snow and Blizzards. Was playing in them before you were born. I lived in Queens , N.Y. and the storm of 1948/49 was a biggy. Then again I was a 12 year old at the time. But as a 20 year old, the storm of 56/57 when I was driving on the Pennsy Tpke. and it turned into a whiteout was enough to get me to Fla. Just like MRR ing, to each his own. lol Hope everyone stays warm and well and no more burst pipes.
Prayers for all.

Well looky here. T O P. Go for it gang. Charge card is loaded as yesterday was payday. Charge of the chow-hounds will now commence. lol Enjoy.
Good Afternoon...Its sleeting here temp is holding at 31...I'll have a cup of egg nog and some cookies please..Hey Flip good to see you!..I got the place to myself Sallie and Her sisters are doing Christmas with Mom today..Got a call from my brother in Florida saying my life line went off..it didn't don't know whats going on?..Got a Con cor F3 on Ebay this morning.been looking for one ever since I got into N scale..Got a Monon shell I want to put on it..Christmas present to myself..LOL..You all have a good Saturday nite...Jerry
Afternoon, Janie, I'll have a RBF please. Thanks! Oh, Flip's buying? Heck, add a small ribeye sandwich, some cheesey fries, and strawberry shortcake with the whipped cream on top!
Rob, sounds you've had a rotten past couple of days. I'd be calling up and hollering long and hard until they could get your machine working properly (to YOUR satisfaction - and your wife's, being as she's a nurse). You do NOT need that #%$*&^ screwing up your sleep on top of all the other stuff you're dealing with lately. And DO get to your doctor, ASAP, pull in any and all favors to get his staff to give you the earliest MONDAY appointment possible (Tuesday at the absolute latest). will increase here (and likely with others, also).
Sawyer, when you said about the rugby team, I couldn't help but think of the bumper sticker I've seen around here (guess they have an amateur league in the area): "Play Rugby - Donate Blood" Hopefully, your team there won't be like that.
Flip - so you didn't just move down there to sunny Florida when you retired, you headed there early, eh? Of course, two nasty winter/whiteout storms would likely do it for me, but my family's roots go back to Platte County Nebraska, where they get drifts about as big as those 'lake effects' ones in upstate NY.
Jerry, hope you can get whatever's going on with your life line fixed soon. You don't want that thing to be unreliable on ya. Congrats on the new loco that's coming.
Haven't got by Hobby Lobby yet, but got the groceries I needed (more or less). Will go by there after here. I decided that I already have a rust color paint (Floquil and/or Polly S), so I just need to find a nice steel color spray paint for the 'pipes', the H-beam pieces and the I-beams. I may do some scouting out of Christmas lights to see what they have on sale.
Ray, nice photos of those Tichy flats in WPF. Care to go over your technique for that 'weathered wood' look? I like the WPF pics by TrolleyRob (another Diner who hasn't been for a while) and C&O Terry(in Texas), too. And Crandell's layout shot is neat - hope he describes how he did that.
About time for me to head for H-L and finding some 'steel' color paint. being said for Rob, Ulrich, Jeff and our others with health problems going on. Hope to hear from Ulrich soon...

Flo how about a nice hot cup of decafe while I check out the specials. Need to warm up a bit so i'll go sit near the stove in the back......
Robby, WOW! Sounds like you had quite a ride..... Amazing! Around here when the conditions get THAT bad, the counties close the roads to all but emergency driving. That takes care of the argument from the boss......... Hope you guys didn't sign anything from the Pole-eese that didn't agree with your explanation of what happened.
JimRCGMORay, nice photos of those Tichy flats in WPF. Care to go over your technique for that 'weathered wood' look?
Thanks Jim! First off the wood splitter has been at the museum since mid October. The day I brought up there I split all the available wood they had laying around. Since then they have been mostly waiting on one of the members who livs near the museum to load up a flatbed truck he has with wood and drop it of for them to split. Only took a couple weekends to finish once they got the wood. I was worried that we would get 3 or 4 feet of Lake Effect Partly Cloudy and it would be buried until Spring.... The technique for the "wood" on the decks of the flat cars is actually very easy. I primed the car with testers flat black (the color the car would be) after they dry, I brushed on Earth color, then let dry well. This is followed by painting the individual boards diluted Roof Brown mixed with a light gray. I paint some of the boards skipping several each time. After the first set of boards are done the roof brown is diluted with gray and more of the boards are painted, this is continued doing random boards until all are done. I end up using about 4 shades of the roof brown and gray mix. Again making sure the paint is completely dry, I use some coarse sandpaper to make scratches across the boards exposing some of the paint below. Turns out very nice and is easy to do.
Sawyer? Rugby, eh? Gonna play some "real" Feetball!!! Good for you. Have fun!
Flip....... The strom of '56/'57? I remember that one! I was just a little kid, but I remember it closed the schools here in Ontario County for close to 3 weeks! A couple of the country roads near where I lived on the farm didn't get opened up until Spring. We only got 6 or so feet of snow, but it blew and drifted into monster drifts. About 1/4 mile from our farm, the farm where my Father grew up had a drift in the road that was 35' deep. Took a week for the road crews to blast their way through that one and move down to the next one down the hill just beyond our house. We could hear the old 10 wheeler county trucks start out, pick up speed and ram into the pack. There was 4 or 5 trucks working one after another. What a racket all day....... We had to actually tunnel through a 10' deep drift across our driveway to get to the barn to do chores. My Father found that the road was completely iced over on the next hill down from our house and since School was closed, we went sledding. He fired up the Ford tractor and put a rope on the drawbar for me to hold onto. He towed me on the sled over to and up the big hill. We spent about 3 hours sledding down the icy road that day and the next before the road crews cleared out the road for traffic. The tractor with chains and the front bucket made short work of the drift we had to clear to have some fun........ You Southern Boys have no idea how much fun S**W can be at the right time and place!!!!
I got out to the museum about 1PM just after lunch was over and most all the volunteers had returned to their assignments. Lucky for me there were a couple of the younger guys standing around chatting with the girlfriend of one of them. They said they could help me load the wood splitter onto the trailer, but they had something that had to be done first (which turned out to be to give the girlfriend a ride in one of the locomotives..... Probably had to check the track.... Yep that's it....). So I waited for almost 2 hours after I made sure the splitter was accessible, removed the chain and lock, and got the trailer set up to be loaded. Finally a couple other guys came down from the restoration building to get warm and I coned them into helping me. We got finished just as the "crew" from the loco arrived back down the line. great timing, huh? Got home (after stopping in Canandaigua to feed the kitties) just before dark.
Hope you all have a great night!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Good Evening
Typing with 'Spring' all curled up between my arms---hence chicken wing typing style--
So far so good---no broken pipes this evening---but a royal mess with mud and other associated slop all over the road and sidewalks. All we are going to see is a few little snowflurries for tonight-----
I spent my day puttering around the house getting ready for Thursday's onslaught of many peoples in our house. Had to ready the now 'guest room'----still known as my trainroom ---- now I have to get the air mattresses checked out---
Chloe---I'll have a plate o' fries and a big ol' greaseburger please----and a large RBF as well---I'm going to sit at the RC for a bit--

Flip- OK. You're forgiven. But only because you're a cold weather vet. Truthfully, way more so than I. Actually, I was just kidding. However I shall STILL (snapping to attention with index finger pointed straight to the ceiling at the end of a fully extended arm) express disgust at any one who RUBS IN their warm pleasant weather in the winter to come. (harrumph)
Rob- You are high on my Prayer list.
Jeff- 100ml so far, wow! And to think without the vac the wound would be healing with all that fluid. Or at least trying to. Glad it‘s working or I was going to say suggest to them maggots and leeches.
I hope Robby's boss is understanding about the weather and the accident.

Jeff, what happened to your 'puter that you're reinstalling? Drive die, or other hardware issue? Sounds like your health care people think the vaccuum is doing its job. Does it help your foot to feel better, also?
JP, nice tree, but I think you need a bigger one - just cut a hole into the attic and it'll fit just fine! That solves the question of "Which ornament do we put on the top of the tree", doesn't it?Nice job of decorating the tree, too.
And speaking of Christmas decorations, my tree is a tad smaller than JP's. I also tried to get a photo from outside of the lights, but I've decided the only way I'll get that is to 1) park my car opposite that window, 2) take my mini-tripod and put it on the hood of my car, and 3) do a time exposure with flash, to balance the lights and the flash. Almost more bother than it's worth, I'd say. Anyway, here's the inside photo of the tree and lights (without flash):
Note my fancy lighting arrangement around the window. And I used white lights on the tree, but the colored lights elsewhere.
Ray, thanks for the explanation - how coarse of a grit on the sandpaper? (I promise that'll be my last question on the weathering technique...) As for your s**w tales, you're right about 'the right time and place'. Around here, if the roads get tricky, the school districts in out of town areas will close (because of the hilly roads that their buses have to travel to bring the kids to/from school).
Sawyer, best wishes on no breaks or need for tetanus shots after playing rugby. Like your start on the furniture factory - remember you'll need some outside loading docks, plus a goodly assortment of junk, pallets (good ones and parts of broken ones in a trash barrel), etc. Lots of potential in that factory!
I got two colors of craft paint today at H-L - aluminum (close enough for steel, I figured, right?) and a metallic silver. Also cut some lengths of I-beams from the strips I had bought, and got six pieces about 50' (HO scale). May need to go back and buy some more of that shape this week. So how do they stack and tie down I-beams, anyway? Guess I'll need to go do some looking online, eh?
Gee, not a lot of Diners in since my earlier post today - only six people since 4 p.m.? [Edit]: I see that Todd is back, so seven. Well, seven plus Duke, but he's just napping (as usual for him). Anybody heard anything back from Ulrich (email, PM, whatever)? I went ahead and sent him an email to check how things were going for him and Petra. I guess it could be that their son has arrived and they've been busy catching up on news with him. I'm hoping nothing serious happened, for sure.
I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a while and see who else makes it in.

JimRCGMORay, thanks for the explanation - how coarse of a grit on the sandpaper? (I promise that'll be my last question on the weathering technique...)
Jim, I used #60, but you could probably use coarser or finer with no problem. The big thing is to work carefully and lightly or you will take off too much. Then you have to start again........... Oh and I don't mind questions about what I am doing, I rather enjoy being asked. That should be what the hobby is about! (Unless you believe smme things being said over in the NMRA thread.........
I spent a couple hours this evening painting the rails a Brown Rust color. Got about 10 foot done. next to put the fascia back up and finish the "cut" for the roadbed in this area. Then it will be time to ballast, then on to scenery........ Never ending............ (thankfully!).
Ulrich, where are you sir. Sure hope you are OK! We miss you! Trouble with those that live very far away, can't just send somebody over to knock on the door like we can with Jeffrey down in the boonies of Looseeannar.........
Speaking of Jeffrey......... (how'd ya like how I led into THAT one?). Looks like the sump pump on your foot is doing what it's supposed to be doing..... Hope it heals up soon for you!
Well, 'bout time I headed out for the night, have to be in Church early tomorrow as head usher. Actually the youth are doing the ushering tomorrow as it is the Sunday School Pageant this Sunday. I just have to be there as an emergency backup and one more person to make sure the kids know what they are doing...... And do the attendance count. The pageant is always fun to do the count for because Church is always packed and as soon as you start to count the bodies sitting there, a bunch of Shepherds, Lambs, Cows, Angels, or what have you move up to the "stage" throwing your count completely off................
[edit] Barry you posted while I was typing..... Cute shots of Spring, particularly the last one.......
Have a blessed night all!

The wood's in for the week (maybe, depends a bit on the temps.), and the decorations are up. I was putting the last of the train ones on the bathroom shelf when a knock came at the back door. Out neighbour across the street had arrived, with a small grandson, and a grocery bag. In that were a whole bunch of oysters from his oyster farm - what a treat. I'll see if I can drop some off in the Diner, for those who like them! Some mrr today, but not what I thought I'd be doing when I was in last. Since it's now after 12:30 I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort, prosperity and peace.

Good morning,

Hello--
Just another DULL day for our viewing pleasure----with a slight chance of a coupla little snowflurries late today. The high will be -2C with the low at -8C. Right now we are at -5C and DULL.
LSWrrHad an impromptu operating session last night for 3 hours. I found I really need to work on some track maintenance issues, not many but enough to warrant a day of mainline trouble shooting.
Those sessions are fun---and useful to find these issues before they become bigger issues----because they can cause even more ISSUES!!---if not looked after----as I've discovered recently
I've got a few gotta dos today . So I might get a bit of MRRing done today as well----maybe
Chloe--I'll just have a coffee for now please----I'm over at the RC----
Good morning. Its a cold snowy day. We got about 6 inches yesterday, and maybe a dusting today.
Well I will have to try to dig the cars out today. I will probably have to go into work tonight. Hopefully no wrecks this time.
Not mcuh planned other than that.
Hope everybody has a good Sunday.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Good morning. It's 31 and sunny. The high will be in the mid 50's with rain.Part of yesterday was spent reinstalling the software on my computer. For some unknown reason the operating system dropped about half of it's drivers and crashed. I tried restoring it but to no avail. I finally ended up wiping the drive and reinstalling the operating system. After that it was just a long process of copying backup data from DVD's to the C drive. I've got most everything back in order now. I could have thought up better ways to spend my time.
Afternoon everyone!
Didn't get a chance to pop in for breakfast this morning. My big kittie, Manét had a massive hairball about the time I got out of bed this morning. Ended up spending what little time I had before I had to get to church cleaning piles up off the carpet and the kitchen floor............. He still is not feeling good from the ordeal and is laying on the floor by the computer desk next to a heat duct. He appears to be OK, but just not feeling good..... I'll keep an eye on him 'til he starts acting like his normal self though.
Flo just a cup of decafe to warm me jup before I drive to Canandaigua to feed the cats at me sister's house. Then I am off to a reception at our pastors house for all of us serving on the baord of Deacons and the Elders in our church. It is usually a great get together!
May get to do a bit of stuff on the layout this evening....... I hope!

der5997 Sawyer: Anyone got tips/pointers for playing rugby?...just forget most of what you know about North American Football - especially passing forward and tackling anyone who looks like a threat to the ball carrier. That is, so long as the rules haven't changed too much in the 55 or so years since I played Rugby at School!
lol, gotcha. eh, I played defense mostly, so I've got tackling down. Any offensive stuff works for me.
Ah, so no blocking for the ball carrier then?
Jim, thanks man. I'm still fighting the derned smooth-it for the lot.
Good afternoon, snowing to beat heck here...some "Alberta Clipper" moving through and screwing up the roads. It sounds like there could be a "grinder" (serious wreck) not too far to the north up in Jones County.
Responded to a house fire yesterday morning, a wood burning stove in the basement apparently got a little too hot, tried to take the house. Olin Fire, Stanwood (1-7-1) Fire, and us (Clarence, 1-3-1) fire made a stand, drew a line, told the fire "you got this much...you ain't taking the house." Ultimately, we won. There was about 2-1/2 feet of water in the basement, the enclosed front porch over the basement/stove is a total loss, damage to the first floor, heat/smoke throughout the rest. Red Cross was talking to the family as we were leaving.
After THAT, Loving Wife and I knocked out the last of the Christmas shopping for the year: bottle of Port for my Dad, and some "Christmas spirits" for me (early present from Loving Wife).
Today? Welp, the plan is to watch it snow...maybe try to do a little MRR w**k. I could always get a little further/farther on THAT roundhouse, I 'spose.
I showed Rerun the picture of the cat in a Christmas tree...he said he'd make sure he spread some "Christmas cheer" on THAT tree...heh heh heh. Rerun HATES cats.
SAWYER: I'm liking THAT furniture factory...again you make me wish I'd gone for N-sane scale...even though, I know I would go N-sane trying to w**k with THAT itty-bitty stuff.
ROBBY P: GLAD you survived the wild ride. I've had bosses just like THAT...life-threatening driving conditions and "can you come in?" H, E, double-freakin'-hockey sticks NO! My life is worth more than $10 bucks/hour. I hope your head man agrees. Oh, good idea keeping the drunks in front/in sight. Glad THAT didn't turn into a whole 'nother situation...
JEFF: About THAT idiot you e-mailed me about...any resolution there? Also glad the "sump pump" is w**king so well. I'm just surprised there is THAT much fluid to draw-out...seems to me your leg/ankle/etc. should've been swelled-up massively to have so much fluid retained. Strange stuff.
ROB (I think): With the C-PAP/Bi-PAP stuff...sounds like you got stuck with a "book smart, field stupid" specialist. I hope either THAT provider finds you a more competent tech., OR you find another provider... having your eyeballs blown out of their sockets kinda defeats the purpose of the mo-sheen.
JIM: Your Christmas tree and window lights are almost a dead-ringer for the set-up I had in my bachelor pad in Central City in '97-'99.
"Hello" to the rest of youse... I've lost track of what-all else I was gonna comment on from the past few days. Since I just realized I've had an Athearn foobie soaking for about a week now... I think I'd best jump up and do something about it.
Have a good, SAFE rest of the day...
Chris

Wee bit of coffee in a AT&SF mug, please.
***John, although sunshine might make me feel a little better short term, it actually makes the sarcoidosis worse. Kinda complicated to explain, but has everything to do with how the bodies of sarc people turn one form of D into another form. Counter intuitive, I know.
***Chris, my wife agrees with you completely. She doesn't even want to bother trying to get anywhere with that pulmonologist. She thinks we should go directly to our old Doc and get a prescription from him and by the machine outright. As long as it allows me to adjust settings, I can figure out what works best. We'll see soon enough.
Still have a few farm chores to do. Taking a break for a bit. Might start a new little project for the wife's layout this evening. A Billboard or the covered dining area for her church.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Rob.
Chris: Check your PM's.
Good afternoon, Flo - I'll try some of that crab (not too much, or I'll definitely be stuffed...), a bowl New England clam chowder, and a RBF, please 'n' thanks!
jeffrey-wimberlythe AVG antivirus. Ran it and found a Trojan lurking in the woodwork. My next downloads were Firefox, Ad Block, Adblock Plus and several other little add-ons I needed. I got Firefox up and put IE back on the retirement rack.
der5997which is why this just about to be 70 leaves it in the camera and downloads directly from there, deleting in the process.
I was thinking, Robby - after DerJohn reminded me about your wreck you had yesterday - that if you took photos of the car after the accident (showing how turned around, etc. it was), you could send that by email to your boss, or print a copy for when you are able to get back to w**k. Hope you have a safe trip today!
Barry, nice photos of 'Catzilla' on the prowl there. Thought of you today - we started with it being dull, and by mid-day, it had found its way to 'bright dull' (there's an oxymoron...) - meaning it was brighter overall, but still dull. About enough to give anybody seasonal affective disorder.
Ray, it doesn't sound like this will be a good day for Manét. Did he eat something that disagreed with him, or anything out of the ordinary? On a more pleasant note, those house parties at the pastor's place are usually a lot of fun. Enjoy!
AmanaMedicJIM: Your Christmas tree and window lights are almost a dead-ringer for the set-up I had in my bachelor pad in Central City in '97-'99.
Lee, hope your troubleshooting goes well on the layout gremlins.
Any tips on how to readily get grabirons glued to a freight car body? I have some P2K gondolas that need them applied, plus a Walthers wood caboose that needs 'em too. If I talk myself into it, I hope I might get going on several of the kits this week so I get the hang of how to do it, but any and all hints, tips, suggestions, or warnings would be GREATLY appreciated. Had me thinking also about dragging out the Optivisor that I haven't learned how to use much yet. Hmm, maybe I just had attention deficit...
Tomorrow a.m. is the 'w' thing, but come Friday, I will be on VACATION!! (Boy, I'd love to have grabirons down pat before it's over) Should be a good time for some de-cluttering, and more MRR w**k, including wiring it up, and some kits built. Yeah, and how about a kitbashed sanding facility and a repaint of an old Revell small town station (Depot olive and depot green)?
I'll sit a spell at the window booth - at least outside the Diner here, there's more sunshine than our DULL day here today. 31 F/ C, windchill of 22 F/ C, and they're saying scattered snow showers (well, they must be VERY scattered, 'cause I haven't seen any sign of one). So dull out that everybody driving has their headlights turned on. Yep, I like the weather outside here, MUCH better!
Prayers for safe travel, 'foot sump pumps' that w**k well, a new BiPAP in time for somebody's Christmas would be nice, and for better health for both Diners and their ailing critters.
Good Evening---
JimRC: Welp----It cleared up to the west of us---just enough to tease us with a few rays of sunshine before night time showed up All we got for the sun was a little speck---
I managed to get a few things done in the house before we had the beginning of the visitations of the hordes----my one sister showed up so we be spending tomorrow trying to finish off the rest of the stuff. Some other relatives should be at airport Tuesday morning---
Chloe, I'll have a RBF with a strawberry Sundae please----I'll be over at the window booth with Jim here---
