Had an impromptu operating session last night for 3 hours.  I found I really need to work on some track maintenance issues, not many but enough to warrant a day of mainline trouble shooting.

Those sessions are fun---and useful to find these issues before they become bigger issues----because they can cause even more ISSUES!!---if not looked after----as I've discovered recentlyBlack Eye

I've got a few gotta dos today . So I might get a bit of MRRing done today as well----maybeWhistling

Good morning,

Had an impromptu operating session last night for 3 hours.  I found I really need to work on some track maintenance issues, not many but enough to warrant a day of mainline trouble shooting.  We have about 2” of snow on the ground with another 2” on order for today and tonight.

Oh, and would you believe?  I left the Memory Card for the camera stuck in the computer back here!   I'll tell ya, being 70 ain't for sissies!

...which is why this just about to be 70 leaves it in the camera and downloads directly from there, deleting in the process. Big Smile

Anyone got tips/pointers for playing rugby?
...just forget most of what you know about North American Football - especially passing forward and tackling anyone who looks like a threat to the ball carrier. That is, so long as the rules haven't changed too much in the 55 or so years since I played Rugby at School! Laugh

The wood's in for the week (maybe, depends a bit on the temps.), and the decorations are up. I was putting the last of the train ones on the bathroom shelf when a knock came at the back door. Out neighbour across the street had arrived, with a small grandson, and a grocery bag. In that were a whole bunch of oysters from his oyster farm - what a treat. I'll see if I can drop some off in the Diner, for those who like them! Some mrr today, but not what I thought I'd be doing when I was in last. Since it's now after 12:30 I'll say Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort, prosperity and peace.Angel

Todd - Cape Jim  Hey guys, no offense taken. All in good fun. Family matters when I was a kid-7 years old. First hurricane I went thru was in 1943. Scary then and Andrew was a heck of a lot worse. I'd rather be up north in a blizzard than go through a 'cane like that again.  Anyway, I do enjoy all the postings and pictures all of you post.  Yeah, I sure would like to have your talents. Maybe thats why one of my nicknames is-"Fumble Fingers Phil". lol. Yeah, I can laugh at myself. As Popeye said, I yam what I yam".

Wish everyone pleasent dreams and Enough.                 Prayers for all.     Goodnight.

Jeff, what happened to your 'puter that you're reinstalling? Drive die, or other hardware issue? Sounds like your health care people think the vaccuum is doing its job. Does it help your foot to feel better, also?

For some reason it dropped half it's drivers then wouldn't restart. First thing I downloaded after getting on the net was the AVG antivirus. Ran it and found a Trojan lurking in the woodwork. My next downloads were Firefox, Ad Block, Adblock Plus and several other little add-ons I needed. I got Firefox up and put IE back on the retirement rack.

Evenin' folks!

Zoe just a cup of decafe and a couple of those Christmas Cookies you got at the counter.  Yes the big ones with the frosting and the sugar sprinkles..... Thanks.  i'll be at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

Ray, thanks for the explanation - how coarse of a grit on the sandpaper? (I promise that'll be my last question on the weathering technique...) Whistling

Jim, I used #60, but you could probably use coarser or finer with no problem.  The big thing is to work carefully and lightly or you will take off too much.  Then you have to start again...........Whistling  Oh and I don't mind questions about what I am doing, I rather enjoy being asked.  That should be what the hobby is about!  (Unless you believe smme things being said over in the NMRA thread.........

I spent a couple hours this evening painting the rails a Brown Rust color.  Got about 10 foot done.  next to put the fascia back up and finish the "cut" for the roadbed in this area.  Then it will be time to ballast, then on to scenery........  Never ending............ (thankfully!).

Ulrich, where are you sir.  Sure hope you are OK!  We miss you! Trouble with those that live very far away,  can't just send somebody over to knock on the door like we can with Jeffrey down in the boonies of Looseeannar.........

Speaking of Jeffrey......... (how'd ya like how I led into THAT one?).  Looks like the sump pump on your foot is doing what it's supposed to be doing.....  Hope it heals up soon for you!

Well, 'bout time I headed out for the night, have to be in Church early tomorrow as head usher.  Actually the youth are doing the ushering tomorrow as it is the Sunday School Pageant this Sunday.  I just have to be there as an emergency backup and one more person to make sure the kids know what they are doing......  And do the attendance count.  The pageant is always fun to do the count for because Church is always packed and as soon as you start to count the bodies sitting there, a bunch of Shepherds, Lambs, Cows, Angels, or what have you move up to the "stage" throwing your count completely off................

[edit]  Barry you posted while I was typing.....  Cute shots of Spring, particularly the last one.......Wink

Have a blessed night all!

Evenin', Janie - just an oatmeal raisin cookie and a CAW mug of coffee, please. Thanks!

What is this word,Retire?? New tires on car? Go to sleep?  I average 300 miles a day taking folks to dr.s, hospitals, etc. W/C van and or pass.car. Retire? HA HA HA!!!  Man I wish I could.

Sorry there, Flip - I guess I had thought you moved to Florida and had at some earlier point retired, but then decided you needed to get back to the 'W' thing ('cause you didn't know what to do with all that spare time...). My Oops! Besides, from what I've heard from some of the (alleged) ORF Diners, retirement is highly over-rated as to how much spare time one has (once everybody else finds out you are retired...).

Jeff, what happened to your 'puter that you're reinstalling? Drive die, or other hardware issue? Sounds like your health care people think the vaccuum is doing its job. Does it help your foot to feel better, also?

JP, nice tree, but I think you need a bigger one - just cut a hole into the attic and it'll fit just fine! Smile,Wink, & Grin That solves the question of "Which ornament do we put on the top of the tree", doesn't it?Nice job of decorating the tree, too. Thumbs Up

And speaking of Christmas decorations, my tree is a tad smaller than JP's. I also tried to get a photo from outside of the lights, but I've decided the only way I'll get that is to 1) park my car opposite that window, 2) take my mini-tripod and put it on the hood of my car, and 3) do a time exposure with flash, to balance the lights and the flash. Almost more bother than it's worth, I'd say. Anyway, here's the inside photo of the tree and lights (without flash):

Note my fancy lighting arrangement around the window. And I used white lights on the tree, but the colored lights elsewhere. Wink

Ray, thanks for the explanation - how coarse of a grit on the sandpaper? (I promise that'll be my last question on the weathering technique...) Whistling As for your s**w tales, you're right about 'the right time and place'. Around here, if the roads get tricky, the school districts in out of town areas will close (because of the hilly roads that their buses have to travel to bring the kids to/from school).

Sawyer, best wishes on no breaks or need for tetanus shots after playing rugby. Yeah!! Like your start on the furniture factory - remember you'll need some outside loading docks, plus a goodly assortment of  junk, pallets (good ones and parts of broken ones in a trash barrel), etc. Lots of potential in that factory!

I got two colors of craft paint today at H-L - aluminum (close enough for steel, I figured, right?) and a metallic silver. Also cut some lengths of I-beams from the strips I had bought, and got six pieces about 50' (HO scale). May need to go back and buy some more of that shape this week. So how do they stack and tie down I-beams, anyway? Guess I'll need to go do some looking online, eh?

Gee, not a lot of Diners in since my earlier post today - only six people since 4 p.m.? [Edit]: I see that Todd is back, so seven.  Well, seven plus Duke, but he's just napping (as usual for him). Anybody heard anything back from Ulrich (email, PM, whatever)? I went ahead and sent him an email to check how things were going for him and Petra. I guess it could be that their son has arrived and they've been busy catching up on news with him. I'm hoping nothing serious happened, for sure.

I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a while and see who else makes it in.

Blessings

Tim- Happy B-Day

Flip- OK. You're forgiven. But only because you're a cold weather vet. Truthfully, way more so than I. Actually, I was just kidding. However I shall STILL (snapping to attention with index finger pointed straight to the ceiling at the end of a fully extended arm) express disgust at any one who RUBS IN their warm pleasant weather in the winter to come. (harrumph)

Rob- You are high on my Prayer listAngel.

Jeff- 100ml so far, wow! And to think without the vac the wound would be healing with all that fluid. Or at least trying to. Glad it‘s working or I was going to say suggest to them maggots and leeches.

I hope Robby's boss is understanding about the weather and the accident.

Sawyer, when you said about the rugby team, I couldn't help but think of the bumper sticker I've seen around here (guess they have an amateur league in the area): "Play Rugby - Donate Blood" Hopefully, your team there won't be like that. Shock

hopefully. hey, if it is, then oh well. I think I can take it.

Thanks Ray!

Anyone got tips/pointers for playing rugby?

Evening gang!

Glad I stopped by or I would have missed to signage for the re-located diner!

Anyways, here's a pic of the Christmas Tree my girlfriend and I decorated earlier today...

Well, once I get more pics uploaded to my photobucket page, I'll post them on here for all to see.

Take care!

Evenin' floks!

Flo how about a nice hot cup of decafe while I check out the specials.  Need to warm up a bit so i'll go sit near the stove in the back......

Robby, WOW!  Sounds like you had quite a ride.....   Amazing!  Around here when the conditions get THAT bad, the counties close the roads to all but emergency driving.  That takes care of the argument from the boss......... Hope you guys didn't sign anything from the Pole-eese that didn't agree with your explanation of what happened.

JimRCGMO
Ray, nice photos of those Tichy flats in WPF. Thumbs Up Care to go over your technique for that 'weathered wood' look? Yeah!!Bow

Thanks Jim!  First off the wood splitter has been at the museum since mid October.  The day I brought up there I split all the available wood they had laying around.  Since then they have been mostly waiting on one of the members who livs near the museum to load up a flatbed truck he has with wood and drop it of for them to split.  Only took a couple weekends to finish once they got the wood.  I was worried that we would get 3 or 4 feet of Lake Effect Partly Cloudy and it would be buried until Spring....  The technique for the "wood" on the decks of the flat cars is actually very easy.  I primed the car with testers flat black (the color the car would be) after they dry, I brushed on Earth color, then let dry well.  This is followed by painting the individual boards diluted Roof Brown mixed with a light gray.  I paint some of the boards skipping several each time.  After the first set of boards are done the roof brown is diluted with gray and more of the boards are painted, this is continued doing random boards until all are done.  I end up using about 4 shades of the roof brown and gray mix.  Again making sure the paint is completely dry, I use some coarse sandpaper to make scratches across the boards exposing some of the paint below.  Turns out very nice and is easy to do.

Sawyer?  Rugby, eh?  Gonna play some "real" Feetball!!!  Good for you.  Have fun!

Flip.......  The strom of '56/'57?  I remember that one!  I was just a little kid, but I remember it closed the schools here in Ontario County for close to 3 weeks!  A couple of the country roads near where I lived on the farm didn't get opened up until Spring.  We only got 6 or so feet of snow, but it blew and drifted into monster drifts.  About 1/4 mile from our farm, the farm where my Father grew up had a drift in the road that was 35' deep.  Took a week for the road crews to blast their way through that one and move down to the next one down the hill just beyond our house.  We could hear the old 10 wheeler county trucks start out, pick up speed and ram into the pack.  There was 4 or 5 trucks working one after another.  What a racket all day.......  We had to actually tunnel through a 10' deep drift across our driveway to get to the barn to do chores.  My Father found that the road was completely iced over on the next hill down from our house and since School was closed, we went sledding.  He fired up the Ford tractor and put a rope on the drawbar for me to hold onto.  He towed me on the sled over to and up the big hill.  We spent about 3 hours sledding down the icy road that day and the next before the road crews cleared out the road for traffic.  The tractor with chains and the front bucket made short work of the drift we had to clear to have some fun........  You Southern Boys have no idea how much fun S**W can be at the right time and place!!!!Smile,Wink, & Grin

I got out to the museum about 1PM just after lunch was over and most all the volunteers had returned to their assignments.  Lucky for me there were a couple of the younger guys standing around chatting with the girlfriend of one of them.  They said they could help me load the wood splitter onto the trailer, but they had something that had to be done first (which turned out to be to give the girlfriend a ride in one of the locomotives.....  Probably had to check the track....  Yep that's it....).  So I waited for almost 2 hours after I made sure the splitter was accessible, removed the chain and lock, and got the trailer set up to be loaded.   Finally a couple other guys came down from the restoration building to get warm and I coned them into helping me.  We got finished just as the "crew" from the loco arrived back down the line.  great timing, huh?  Got home (after stopping in Canandaigua to feed the kitties) just before dark.

Hope you all have a great night!

Jeff- sounds like the vac is doing a good job so far. All that liquid coming off has got to be a good thing.

The nurse checked it today before changing the catch chamber. It had pulled up slightly over 100 ml of liquid, which they think is great. I'm going to be a little slow in my posting for a little while as I had the reinstall Windows XP this morning.

Afternoon, Janie, I'll have a RBF please. Thanks! Oh, Flip's buying? Heck, add a small ribeye sandwich, some cheesey fries, and strawberry shortcake with the whipped cream on top! DinnerBig Smile

Rob, sounds you've had a rotten past couple of days. I'd be calling up and hollering long and hard until they could get your machine working properly (to YOUR satisfaction - and your wife's, being as she's a nurse). You do NOT need that #%$*&^ screwing up your sleep on top of all the other stuff you're dealing with lately. And DO get to your doctor, ASAP, pull in any and all favors to get his staff to give you the earliest MONDAY appointment possible (Tuesday at the absolute latest). AngelAngel will increase here (and likely with others, also).

Sawyer, when you said about the rugby team, I couldn't help but think of the bumper sticker I've seen around here (guess they have an amateur league in the area): "Play Rugby - Donate Blood" Hopefully, your team there won't be like that. Shock

Flip - so you didn't just move down there to sunny Florida when you retired, you headed there early, eh? Of course, two nasty winter/whiteout storms would likely do it for me, but my family's roots go back to Platte County Nebraska, where they get drifts about as big as those 'lake effects' ones in upstate NY.

Jerry, hope you can get whatever's going on with your life line fixed soon. You don't want that thing to be unreliable on ya. Congrats on the new loco that's coming.Yeah!!

Haven't got by Hobby Lobby yet, but got the groceries I needed (more or less). Will go by there after here. I decided that I already have a rust color paint (Floquil and/or Polly S), so I just need to find a nice steel color spray paint for the 'pipes', the H-beam pieces and the I-beams. I may do some scouting out of Christmas lights to see what they have on sale.

Ray, nice photos of those Tichy flats in WPF. Thumbs Up Care to go over your technique for that 'weathered wood' look? Yeah!!Bow I like the WPF pics by TrolleyRob (another Diner who hasn't been for a while) and C&O Terry(in Texas), too. And Crandell's layout shot is neat - hope he describes how he did that.

About time for me to head for H-L and finding some 'steel' color paint. AngelAngel being said for Rob, Ulrich, Jeff and our others with health problems going on. Hope to hear from Ulrich soon...

Blessings,

Todd- Just to set the record straight, I am no stranger to cold , snow and Blizzards. Was playing in them before you were born. I lived in Queens , N.Y. and the storm of 1948/49 was a biggy. Then again I was a 12 year old at the time. But as a 20 year old, the storm of 56/57 when I was driving on the Pennsy Tpke. and it turned into a whiteout was enough to get me to Fla.  Just like MRR ing, to each his own.  lol                     Hope everyone stays warm and well and no more burst pipes.

Prayers for all.

Robby P.

Its still snowing, and we are up to about 5 inchs.

sweet.

Ladies and gentleman, I am trying out for a rugby team! There's a high school league here in SC and apparently a local team has been made drawing players from both Aiken High and South Aiken High schools. Say hello to the long rivalry, lol. I ain't played rugby in my life, but apparently nobody on the team ahs played in match before, so I won't be alone, lol.

Coffee in a small AT&SF mug, please & thanks.

Has been a rough few days. Got the Inlaws moved back into the more efficient assisted living facility after finding some movers to help when contracted movers couldn't start their truck. Thank goodness for "2 Men & A Truck", even if 3 men showed up.LOL With the staff dispensing drugs, etc... there should be little if any Inlaw emergencies for a while.

SoapBoxGot the Vpap machine and as I predicted (after hearing what the settings were) I woke up 2 hours in with a painfully distended stomach, setting world class non-stop burps for a good 5 minutes. After all the $$$ spent on 3 sleep studies and pulmonolist vist, that's the best they can do? What a RACKET. She calls them a medical mafia, and I completely agree. She also wants to buy a Vpap off craigslist so I can set it myself. They cost a small fortune.

I keep losing weight, but now it's getting scary. Going to go back to my old Doc first thing next week and see if he'll go for the MP (Marshall Protocol). Doing nothing I will never live long enough to see my model RR built. Now I'm just trying to get the wife's layout as far along as possible. Sorry for the doom & gloom....it's just where I'm at. Just hope this desease isn't to far along for the MP to restore my immune system. Gotta do something and soon.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Morning all....just a quick coffee in a NYC mug please...already had breakfast served to me bright and early by my daughter...(and the dog too) in bed. I turned the fair age of 37 today. Nothing like getting pancakes made by an 8 year old at 6 in the morning. I was also surprised to find a gift that I would have never guessed....the girls got me the MTH NYC Mohawk for my B'day!!!!...Holy Crap!!!...That big old diamond I got my wife for our anniversary must have paid off. The thing runs sweet and looks good pulling my pacemaker string of boxcars. Good thing I found those stupid UGG boots she wanted for xmas. Turning out to be a great day so far. I just may have to hit the LHS today and get myself something. Tim

A true friend will not bail you out of jail...he will be sitting next to you saying "that was friggin awesome dude!" Tim...Modeling the NYC...is there any other?

Good Morning, Flo - I'll have a couple of waffles, with a slice of butter and some maple syrup, glass of milk, and a Rio Grande mug of coffee, please 'n' thank you, ma'am! Dinner

'Sn*wman' Tom Oops - ooks like you had a bit of fun playing in (or was that with?) the sn*w. Oh, we enjoy that white stuff here, it's just avoiding the 'flat-landers' or having to drive to w**k in it that can be tricky at times... As for that memory card, maybe increase your ginko intake? Wink

NS Joe, what can we say? Guess you're just 'lucky' about those TOPs, eh? Smile,Wink, & Grin Sounds like it should be a bountiful Christmas for you, at a minimum. The suprise your Mom won't tell you about might be interesting - hey, ya can hope, right?

Ray, maybe your sister's Monet Marie is mellowing out in her 'old age', a little. Sounds like I will need to go visit WPF today and see what you've been up to - always a delight to the eyes to see. Thumbs Up And you should make sure the museum knows how to efficiently use that log splitter, so they get done quicker. Wink Do you have all of your wood for the winter split and set back?

Well, Robby, as far as your 'commute' to w**k (and your supervisor wanting you to come on in anyway) goes:

on them! The rest of today has to get better than that, right? Too bad you didn't get the plate number on that SUV for the cops...Sigh Adding that to the AngelAngel list.

Barry, you'd think the city had better have enough in the 2010 budget for all the rest of the pipes in your neighborhood. Was your water out from this most recent pipeburst (or was it still out from the last one, I'm having trouble keeping track...). Some things you just gotta shake your head and laugh, dontcha? And you haven't even got started don winter up there yet. Shock

I heard nasty rumors that around 6 a.m. this morning we had some of that white stuff locally (probably for about 10 seconds, I'd guess - I didn't look outside until I was heading for the laundromat). Nothing now but a little bit of occasional mist; about enough for the lowest delayed wiper setting on the car. The breeze will be one of those damp, cold ones today that sucks the heat out of any exposed surfaces, I expect. So I'll hole up inside someplace warm most of the day (except for a stop by H-L; want to get some kind of steel gray and a suitable rust color).

Flip, good score at your LHS! Thumbs Up He must be doing well this year - our LHS gave all the MRR club members an XActo-type knife (with #11 blade) at the club's Christmas dinner party. No locos, though...

Todd - Laugh (Flip, I'm not really laughing at your misfortune there (snicker...))

PA Tom - how about, your next vehicle, you get something in a nice mud color? Then you won't have to fowl up the weather with carwashes... Smile,Wink, & Grin

Well, it looks like my laundry's done across the street there, so I'll be heading out. I'll check back this afternoon.

Blessings and prayers for a great Saturday (what's left of it),

Its still snowing, and we are up to about 5 inchs.

Todd.....After a few minutes they came back with the paper work.  I guess they were trying to get use confused.  Never made it to work either, nor haven't heard anything from the supervisors.   I will give them a call tomorrow.

Well I hope everybody is having a good Saturday!!

Mornin' everyone!

Flo I'll have the #2 Special with bacon this morning.  Over easy eggs and sourdough bread toast and lots of homefries if you please.  I'll be in the back booth getting warmed up.

I'm heading out to the museum this morning with the truck and trailer to see if i can rescue my wood splitter from the place.  Guess they have finished using it and have the wood done for this winter finally.  I may have some real fun getting it into the trailer as I would assume that it is well frozen in where it is..... Hopefully there will be enough manpower hanging around to help me break it loose and get it up the ramp in the trailer.  Not sure how I will get it out there for them next year as the trailer will be sold the end of January.

My prayers for all those stuck on the Nor'easter roaring up the coast and my thanksgivings that I live far enough inland that it isn't going to hit where I live.

Morning everybody,

I live just outside of Pittsburgh and there was not quite 3 inches of snow on the ground when I got up this morning. Temperature was about 27 degrees, so that's not too bad. We are suppose to end up with 3 to 5 inches. Now that's great compared to what some of you are getting smacked with. Anyway, fired up the snow blower and got started. I usually do the sidewalks of my neighbors, so that's about 7 houses altogether.

I'm afraid that this storm might be my fault  as I ran the car through the car wash on Thursday. Everytime I do that, the weather turns sour. Somebody doesn't want me to have a clean car.

Try to stay safe and warm so you have a nice weekend.

Mornin. Coffee please and some biscuits and gravy thank you.

Woke to a light skift of s**w this morning so I want to stay home, but I can't.

Jeff- sounds like the vac is doing a good job so far. All that liquid coming off has got to be a good thing.

DerJohn- I'm sure glad that when the flats occurred you were close to assistance instead of in the middle of nowhere. Got a good chuckle out of the story too. And CLOTTED CREAM! That must be it! Oh, sorry. For years and years, as long as I can remember, my Father, when he was alive, spoke of a thickish substance that would constantly be on the back of their wood burning stove when he was a boy on the farm. He said it was thick and I recall him saying something about a yellowish color, but he never knew what it was called. He often wondered if it was what we now call yogurt, though it really didn't taste the same. Of course, nothing anymore does, he would always say. He said they used it in all sorts of stuff and even ate it by itself in a dish like pudding (that is, what we United Statesians call pudding). It was something apparently his Mother was constantly making and just kept on a low heat all day and night. Kinda like the perpetual sourdough starter. It sounds exactly like the Clotted Cream description in the links you supplied. Thanks for solving a mystery. Just too bad he's not here to find out. Well he was a good God fearing man, so I suppose he found out about 10 years ago. Might just have been one of the first questions he asked. Right after, "You do have a golf course up here don't you?"

Sam- Congratulations of course! And we're all rootin', pullin', and a prayin' for ya!

Tom- I took you until the 70's to start forgetting? HA! AmateurLaugh. It took me three attempts to get a "complete functioning camera" (meaning three days of trips) just a couple of months ago and I'm a mere 47. Have fun in the snow buddy, you may not remember it by the time it snow againLaughLaugh.

Robby- Wow! What a ride! Probably good for you, and only you, that you weren't in your vehicle. Did the HP ever get the story straight? I hope the guy had insurance or his trip will have cost him a whole lot more than 10 bucks an hour for sure! Um.......did you ever make it to work?Whistling

Flip, er uh, I mean Fla Phil-Sign - Dots I'm so sorry that your temps have dipped so deeply. Wow, way down to the 40's huh. Gee those Florida winter cold snaps have got to be rough. Be safe and wear a long sleeved shirt. Better yet, when you get theses icy blasts you probably better get a jacket. At least a sweater. And of course limit yourself to exposure times. Watch that exposed skin. Don't want you to get frost bite or anything. I have had that and it haunts you forever. Are you familiar with gloves? (Wink)

Have a Great Day!!!

BRRR! Darn, it's cold here . Mid Fla. isn't nice with temps in the 40's. Wish you dang yankees and ,yes, you canuks  would keep the door shut and keep your cold weather with you.

Hey Barry, did you meet up with Blaine's Trains?      Had a 20 minute break yesterday and stopped in at my LHS. Had a nice chat and as I was leaving He flabbergasted me by gifting me with a gp9. Put a FEC body on the chassis and handed it to me. Totally shocked me.   I'm watching the weather channel and , man, has winter arrived. I don't envy you all. Please stay warm and do NOT over exert yourselves shoveling snow.

Prayers,

Flip   aka Fla Phil
