Keith- Thanks for the compliments. But, alas I can't take credit for someone elses work. I haven't posted pics of my layout in a while so I'm sure it was someone elses. Who's? HA! Could be any of them by the way you described it. Besides, at my stage your wife wouldn't have said, well, exactly what she did. I post occasionally for those who wrongfully feel things aren't going well for them. Makes ‘em feel better. Yup, that's what I'm here for. I have improved greatly though. Thanks to these folks right here, even if they don't realize it. By the way, I prefer the brickwork on the right. Looks a bit cleaner for a wall. But I believe you said a walkway so the one on the left would probably look fine if you slightly dirty'd it up a bit. Lots of traffic you know. Keep in mind however for a wall, brick needs tuck pointed every so often and not all are real neat about getting the mortar only in the cracks so "smudging" an area is true to life. Or (duh,duh, duuum) Prototypical. Ah, just saw Barry's photos. The last shows what I mean.

I got the DCC working one section of the layout. I think I'll be pleased eventually. I am still learning and solving problems with it. So far 3 locos have decoders: EMD SD7, EMD SD9, and a Baldwin VO-1000 switcher.
The main part of the layout will remain standard DC for a while.

A cloudy but pleasant day here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 51°F outside with a high of 56°F later this afternoon. Looks like Ida won't impact our weather here in NY much. For those in the South East.... Drought's over!
Got on the computer this morning to get an email from the former Super of the division telling me I have to renew the domain name for our website. Waiting for him to get back to me again with some particulars on how to do it. He does that kind of thing for a living, I just surf the web looking for trains......
Jeffrey, I have a total of 15 locos. 8 have DCC and are in service on the Layout. The rest are mostly old ones I have collected (a few from my FIL) since the 1960. They sport cookie cutter flange wheels, frozen motors, and very bad detail..... The ones on the layout are mostly Bachmann Spectrum and are fine runners and good pullers for their size, and one lowly Athearn 2-8-2 that actually runs and with a lot of added weight can now pull a dozen cars up a 2% grade.
Best get a move on. haven't taken my morning shower yet and the morning is just about gone. (Ah, the joys of being retired....). Have a Doctors appointment at 1:30 this afternoon so i best get moving.

Morning all. Just a tall glass of milk, Amy got up early this morning and cooked a big breakfast. Its a soggy, wet, dreary day down here in Bama, we got rained on a ton last night and a little more expected today as the remanents of Ida clear out.
I've only got three locomotives, an Athearn GP40-2 (you've seen it), a Life Like GP38-2, and a Tyco (yes, I said, Tyco) GP7/9 (can't really tell which one is it, but its one of 'em). All three engines run fairly well, so I think I will keep them, spiff 'em up a little (especially the Tyco, thinking of remotoring it), and use them on my layout (once its built). Especially since all three locomotives will fit just right into my area.

Got home from the Docs after doing some shopping a while ago. All my blood work was good. Total cholesterol was 158, BP was 140 over 76 (very good for me at a doctors office...). Kidney function was normal. All other blood work was within limits. He does want the balance between the good and bad cholesterol to be better, but..... Oh my blood sugar was 131, a 30 point drop from the last one, and the 3 month test was 6.4, dropped a whole point from 6 months ago. He looked at the toe and said, "yep, you got gout". I told him I didn't want to end up like Jean Baptiste Lully. He looked at me for a second, and then grinned and started to laugh. He is also a singer and his wife is a professional pianist. Nice to have a doctor that would know those kind of things. He said, "Lully didn't die from the gout, he died from an infection because he pounded his foot with that thing he was conducting with didn't he?"
I wore one of my R&GV Museum shirts to the appt.. Doc comes in and says. Oh Rochester and Genesee Valley Museum, I like that place. Man they have all kinds of neat equipment out there. Good to have a doc who likes trains as well......
He is not going to treat the gout at the moment, but take a bit of wait and see with it. He would have to switch around several of the medications I am on and would have to add at least 2 more to treat the gout. So I am on Advil for the moment.......
Went to the grocery store to pick up a few items (like Advil...). I came over to the dairy case, and there was a couple with with two full carts and a couple small kids with them. I waited for a couple minutes and they didn't move, so I moseyed down a few feet to where they have eggs. All of a sudden I hear this huge bass voice say, Better move the cart darlin' before Mr. Howard yells at you! I swing around and it is one of my students from way back when. This guy is a huge black man whose older brother who was in 6th. grade my first year in Geneva. His brother had a tenor voice like an angel and was just a neat kid. This guy was a couple years younger and always about twice his brother's size. Joe was almost 6' tall and over 200 pounds in 8th. grade. Couldn't carry a tune in a bushel basket as a 6th. grader but joined chorus just the same........ He was also one of those kids who was always into everything he shouldn't be but since he always had a huge grin, somehow never really got in trouble for it. By 8th. grade he had kinda found his voice, a booming bass with about a 4 note range. I let him join my select group. His senior year in high school, he was the soloist with the chorus and his voice had just blossomed into a wonderful rich bass with a huge range. It was good to see him again after at least 20 years.

Rob, the new car looks good!! That's actually one of the local roads that is now owned by the G&W. If your up for a challenge, most of their cars are unrecognizable, I'll see about pics whenever I'm near panama city,
Jeff, Ida ticked me off. Today would have been the first day in a few months that I'd be able to cash my paycheck on the day work (yeah, I had to work today, but no one else does) allows us to get them. But then the bank closes becuase of Ida, so I have to wait till thursday. We got maybe a couple inches of rain so far.
Since everyone is talking about the amount of engines they have, I'll chime in. I have 28 locos, and 24 have DCC. Out of the remaining 4, 2 are dummies (a GP35 and a U30C) and the other 2 (a GP38-2 and an SD40-2) I don't have decoders for yet. 8 have sound decoders, but I need to get a few more.

( The heavy-duty bulldozer w/ the ripper claw on the back), and... for $25.00 - a box of 90+ older 1980ish to 2000 ConRail and Finger Lakes RR ZTS, Timetable, and System maps! Anyone wanna talk trade for the extras that I have as some I got more than 1 in the box ....?

Good evening all. If possible, I'll have a hot ham and cheese sammich with an order of bacon cheese fries, with a RBF to wash it down. I'll be over in the corner booth. Its still raining down here in Troy, Alabama, hopefully it'll clear up tomorrow and then turn into a pseudo-normal fall for the rest of the week. I'll be at w**k all day tomorrow, its our normal truck shipment day although it appeared that we won't be having a truck. Looked for the truck manifest on our computer for the week and couldn't find it. Oh well I guess. Welp, I think I'm going to enjoy my plate of food and hang around for a while.

It's been a week or so since I was last in and as usual there seems to be a ot of frequent visitors.
Bama, a belated congrats on your new little daughter. I'm sure she will keep you busy for the next 18 years or so.
Barry, I did make it to 2 Be in Trains last Thursday and unless you are driving by I wouldn't make a special trip. He has mostly old Lionel, a little HO and very little N, most of which was over priced in my opinion. Nice fellow who owns the shop. I was able to get to Credit Valley and that was worth trip. I picked up an Atlas box car for $7.95 and a 4 DVD set on Canadian steam for $30. It has a couple of DVD's on CP's 2816 including the rebuild that apparently cost CP $1 million. They had a lot of good deals but I only buy what I really want. If you are interested in an AB set of C Liners, they have one set left in CP maroon and grey for $50 which I think is a good deal.
My wife took me out on Saturday for my birthday dinner and was it ever great! My b-day was actually last Tuesday but I prefer to go out on a day when I can sleep in especially after a large meal. We went to Mirlycourtois which is the French restaurant where she volunteers on Tuesdays. I had fresh Oysters from PEI to start and then Bouef Bourguignon. It takes 3 days to make the sauce to get the reduction to where chef wants it.
That is some collection of locos you have there Jeff. I have 11 HO and 4 N. The HO are 3 Spectrum steam, 5 PK2 switchers- 2 steam and 3 diesel, 2 Mehano steam and one Athearn RS3. Of those 9 have decoders of which 6 have sound. I have decoders to put in 2 but they won't be sound, too difficult in a PK2 S3 and not worth it for a Mehano Hudson.
Well that is about it for me this week except to say that it seems Diner birthday season is upon us with me last week, Paul this week and I believe Jerry's is very soon, as in next week?

Almost forgot, here's the basic plan for my Genset's paint. This is a (very) rough sketch of the unit. I was lazy and didn't even want to bother with anything below the frame...EDIT: It's not showing up, so here's the link:http://www.flickr.com/photos/ns3010/4093711925Note that the white curve isn't correctly shaped, and it will be even for the entire length. Unlike the BP4, the stripe will curve down and fade into the frame, instead of curving and continuing horizontally towards the rear end.The colors are going to be CR Blue and BN Green. Also, the lettering will be white, but once again, I was lazy.

Unfortunately my P2K SD-9 (# 346) will have to wait for repairs. One of the trucks has a broken main gear box. The acetel plastic is not repairable. I recall my friend Gus had a P2K E9 hit the floor to be a "floor model". He had a devil of a time getting repair parts for it, and it took about six months before it was back on his layout. He had to buy a junked E8 and salvage parts from it.
The steps in one corner are bent back. I fear if I try to bend them back they will break off.

JERRY: I forgot to mention earlier how much I like the shot of the RI switcher. It triggered a memory of seeing a switcher just like it, rounding the bend in an "urban canyon" in Cedar Rapids. Same angle as your pic, only factory buildings instead of a tunnel. It had to have been in the mid-1970s. Funny how that works.
GARRY: Sorry to hear about the "floor model." The red/gray paint job is part of what keeps calling to me to switch to a CB&Q branchline in SW Iowa.... I keep resisting it, however, due to the amount of stuff already acquired. Looks sharp though.
I've already forgotten who posted the pic of the CP geep (BARRY maybe?)...NICE SHOT! I'm a fan of them geeps, especially when they've had all sorts of extra parts added making them look like something out of a Details West catalog.
Tonight I got the 2nd foobie hopper de-foobicated with a shot of faded/weatherbeaten IC orange paint. Decals will hopefully be ordered sometime yet this year. In the meantime, I'm torn on what to do with the 3rd foobie (also an ex-Lapeyrouse Grain Corp. patched to CC). I've got a third documented number for an orange car...and two numbers documented for gray cars. I've also got one documented in CCP red...but haven't figured out what decals to use for that.
Tomorrow night is the Veterans' Day dinner in North Liberty, which I am to cover for THAT. Thursday, she's sending me to a "pizza with the politicians" thing, also in North Liberty. Apparently, the "younger crowd" is gonna scarf pizza with "the old dudes." OY.
Speaking of "old," I've also already forgot which of the young 'uns finished the "nearly a million pages" paper... Wow. Maybe you oughta take up a job writing legislation for the current administration/congress...

The bulk of the locos I have are old Tyco F units from years and years ago and the venerable Life Like F40 Amtrak no 229! (Yup got one, of course it doesn't run but I got one). The ones that run are, One Bachmann Spectrum F40 PH, Bachmann GP40, Bachmann 4-4-0 "Jupiter" AHM SW2 I think is what it's suppose to be they called it a 1000 HP switcher (my first loco from about oh I thin '72 maybe. and yes it still runs.), and the Atlas dash 8.

Been trying to catch up on all the entries here and boy is that a job. As you folks get older you seem to talk a lot more.
Speaking of getting older, I want to wish all who are celebrating a Birthday this month a very Happy Birthday. Include me in those Novenber ones as mine was on the third.
Got a nice three pack set of Accurail 55ton hoppers in WP mineral red/brown paint to add to my hopper fleet. ( very nice ). They came from T.&J. Prantle hobbies in Pasco, Washington. Really great people and service.
Not much else happening MRR wise. The Bedroom and storage area are back ready to drywall and once that is done and redecorated then and only then it will be back to the "Wobbly" This basement problem and my siatic nerve in my left leg has sure set me back a ways. I am beginning to think that I might have to get used to living with this pain in my leg, as when I was a kid I was run over on that leg by a loaded gravel truck. It never really bothered me until this summer. occasionally it would be a bit of a trick knee but that was all until June this year.
Well I am off to bed, have to work the next two days, then off for three on the week-end.
So prayers and blessings to all in need, and that is quite a few on that list right now. I feel for all of you.
