 Just a quick stop.

I've been trying to get the top finished (for now).   Painted the backdrop, and added some grass, weeds, etc.

Ulrich.......Thanks.  You just can't get enough "yard", ya know.

Bama.......Yeah I hate hearing myself on video.   I still get people confused when I talk.  Then a few people I work with wants to know what the "south" is like.  Grocery stores, food, etc......

Well I will pop back in later.

Ahh, lunch time!   I'll have the chicken fried steak, mashed taters with gravy, and peas, along with a glass of sweet tea.  I know what you mean Robby!  I don't exactly like hearing myself either, but hey it be what it be.  As far as things in the south, grocery stores are pretty well grocery stores, you've got what you need, only difference is you might find stuff like pigs feet and such every now and again.  And don't get me started on southern food....You've just gotta be here to enjoy it!  Well, I think I'm going to go up to our house this afternoon (since I've got the day off w**k) and put up some trim, do a little painting and more or less hide out for the afternoon.  Tonight's agenda is going to my mother-in-law for dinner and to get a few gifts for Amy.  Part of me can't wait for that.

Well, enough of my rambling, I'm going to try to figure out what kind of pictures and information I can find on the Dothan Sub from eras past (kinda interested to see what rolled along the rails down here from yesteryear).  I think I'm going to jump into the window booth, eat this wonderful and delicious food that is always served here at the diner, and research.

Decided I better catch this before it slid off page one. Just been watching a bunch of old war movies over here. Things like 'Aeriel Gunner', 'Submarine Base', 'Pacific Inferno' and 'Casablanca Express'.

Jeff, you sound like my kind of people>  I love war movies.  I have quite a collection.  I put on a movie, then go to work on the layout.  My latest purchases were Von Richthoffen and Brown. not an actual real life movie.. but the WW I bi planes and stuff is great.  The other was Dresden, a love / war movie.. to appease my wife... but it was good.  I was so happy when Hell And Back came out... with Jeffrey Hunter (Capt. Pike on Star Trek and Zulu as his step brother).. I went out and bought it.  I had actually talked to the guy on the phone.(Guy Galbadon) the actual war hero.  I was going to go meet the man, but we both came down with the Flu. Since then he has passed away.  But war movies.. I've got em.  Couldn't tell ya which one I liked best.  But probably Midway is one of the top 3.  My dad was a ww II hero, and we never knew.. he never talked about it.. till much later in life.  I have 2 sons.. in the 20's and they were suprised to hear Grandpa talk of his WWII Pacific Tour.  My mom and dad really didn't get out much, so I would take them movies.. to watch.  Then weeks later.. I'm at the house.. aND my mom tells me.. "You know.. that saving Private Ryan brought back some memories to your DAD~"  "Ah come on.. Dad wasn't in the fighting.. he told me he strung telephone poles in Japan after the war."   "Dad~' you mean to tell us now.. you were in the actual fighting? Like D day invasion?"  he replied.. "We fought in the south Pacific ... took islands and beaches"  "We fought an enemy that was prepared to die"  He told his stories.. as my sons ..just listened. Never before had we ever heard anything like that.  I knew he had 'Night Sweats' and bad dreams.. but never did we ever think of him fighting.  When my dad past away, all his medals he ever earned.. I saw.. there were plenty.

***Jerry, how many calorie kit is that one?

***Sue, we're high & dry here, as are our barns. Just the pastures that flood and only when it rains a LOT, following the groud being previously saturated. This is perhaps only the 4th time I remember such flooding in the 15 years I've lived here. Each one they call a "Hundred Year Flood".Laugh

***Robby, looks good so far and all that additional track will be great. What kind of Industries will you go with on that table section?

Another long day on the ol' farm, including some temporary fence fixes. Tonight could bring another 2"- 4" of rain.

Wife asked me today if there was anything new to see in the train room....IS SHE KIDDING? As if I've had any time (or energy) for working on the layouts lately.

Evenin' folks!

Another chilly night here in the Finger Lakes, Flo, so how 'bout a nice hot bowl of chili and a decafe this evening.

I have spent much of the day preparing for the Scout Meeting on Thursday evening.  I have completed two Powerpoint presentations and a basic lesson plan for the meeting.  This first meeting will be an introduction to the Merit Badge and some intense instruction and discussion on safety on and around railroads and equipment.  The second time I see them will be the field trip to the Museums to ride on the Trolley and the train, so I want them to be prepared well before they go.  If I know these guys they will know all the "rules" very well and will notice every person at the museum who does something "unsafe"...  They will not, however, have any tendency to keep that knowledge to themselves...  "Look Musicman, (my camp name) they're standing on the track! (said at 200 decibals!) Hey!, you!, don't you know that you could get hurt! Now get off that track right now!!!"  (These are mostly mentally handicapped young adults in the troop.  great guys to work with but you have to get used to some, uh, quirks.......)

Ray the slow is looking really good.

Why thank you Lee!  I sure hope the judges agree with you....Smile,Wink, & Grin  BTW, it looks like we have a tentative date for the judging to happen.  Just waiting to hear back from one person, but he said that day would work as well so...............

I'm going to try to get as much of the remaining skirting in place as I can before the crew gets here.  I also have to clean up the room downstairs and get it into top notch operating condition just in case we have some time to "play trains".....  I'm sure I need to have at least one train where it has to be moved you know.......Whistling

The wood stove is getting a very early work out this fall.  It is currently 40°F outside and will get down to 35°F towards morning.  Tomorrow is only going up to 43° and there will be a hrd frost tomorrow night.  I still need to find 2 or 3 more face cords of wood to do the Winter.  The season here is definitely "Almost Winter".  I do like living where there are 4 seasons, and actually enjoy winter most of the time.  Our seasons are:  Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Road Construction.  BTW you might live in the Finger Lakes if your favorite season is Winter 'cause all the pot holes are filled with snow!

Speaking of rednecks......  Jerry great ginger bread house, ah, trailer, ah mobile home, er, Manufactured Housing!  Looks tasty!

Hope you all have a great night!

[edit] Just heard back from the 3rd. person on the team judging the layout.  We are set, the layout gets judged for the merit award needed for the scenery certificate on the 26th.  Yes!

Good morning~  Never thought I'd open up the place.  Hmm might as well get the coffeee going~  Well its rainging in sunny southern California.,  started last night.. probably go on through the day.  Our storms spin off the ocean.. usually coming down from Alaska.  It seldom gets into the low 40's but can freeze around here.  I live by a river, which could over run the banks.  One time as a boy.. it rained for over 2 weeks.

Ray:  Fill us in on the photo/judging.  And if you have nothing to report.. then fill us in on the Finger Lakes.. aka Seneca Lakes?  And is that Canada>  (well I'm sure some Canadians think so)  and what do you know.. you know the locals.. say about the Bluff Point?  Any local stories about the site...?  Has anyone ever decided to survey and dig?

Jeff, Well I can honestly say, I don't have some of those.. but it did make me start looking for some others.. seems I haven't seen 'The Train"  in a long time.  I saw that at the Movie theater when it came out. And the others I pulled out.. WW I 'The Last Detail"  So i've got 3 biggies to watch while I work on my layout on this rainy day.

Barry, you made me laugh.. ah do you also have the "Our friend the Atom"

''Coffee anyone?"

Good morning,

All I have to say this morning is the weather guesser has predicted SN*W for this weekend.  I think he has it right since MN, WI, MI, and IL have been hit with wet sn*w this week.  Robby, find your sn*w shovel, I plan on sending it your way.  On the topic of global warming it has been 10 degrees lower than average all summer here, the overnight low was 36F and I plugged my truck in for the first time last night.  I continued to work on glueing the backdrop in place as I only have a handfull of small clamps.

 Good morning.

It's 71 and raining. The high will be around 80 and there is a chance pf rain.

It's been raining here off and on since about 2 pm yesterday and is still raining, sometimes heavy but mostly light. It doesn't much matter to me since I don't have to be out in it. I do however have to go see my primary care provider today at 11 am. Other than that it will be another boring day at home.

The plan today......Go pay a water bill, and maybe get a car on eBay.  I was going to sell and then buy some Railboxs.  I've been in a RBOX mood lately.

Rob.......They are calling for wet snow flakes Fri/Sat.  Last year we had a dusting near halloween.   Maybe this year to.

Well I will poop back inlater.

Good Morning---

We are sitting at 0C right now with a bit of a NW breeze at 15kmh. And it is Sunny!! Approve We are going to have a mix of sun/cloud today and no rain---so no more black ice things be here---

Going to get some more stuff done on the layout--cleaning it up so I can SEE the dang thing for one--and setting about getting the New Life feedmill/elevator complex together---still need some more conveyor mat'l howeverWhistling

Keith: Yep. I have 3 versions of that one----there is also a curiosum that I got at a flea market that was done on 16mm called "Better Living Through Chemistry"---I'm not sure who sponsered this one as it had NO credit lines anywhere----it even featured a few 'happy housewives'Laugh

Thanks for the coffee----think I'll sit by the RC for a bit--

Good Morning. Rain, rain, go away. Come again some other day. Hm, seems not to work. Oh well coffee and some biscuits and sausage gravy please. We got us and inch of rain over night and it doesn't look like it's gonna be rain free until maybe Sunday. Rain kept the farmers out of the field in the spring and it looks like it's gonna do it again.

Today: Scattered showers before 1pm, then a chance of drizzle after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 46. East wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Tonight: Rain. Low around 40. East wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
Jeff- Glad to hear the vision is getting better and the rest of you too.

Robby- Layout's looking good. It was a wiiiiiise move to put the lift out section right across from the commode!! LaughYou never know when seconds countShockLaugh! And as for the accent, at least it's consistant. Very soft and not overpowering. Now here in the midwest, we go from no accent (or so we say) to sounding like they crawled out from the hills so far back and so far south you can't believe they never left Illinoi with an s. Couple that with our own unique way of pronouncing words and you have, well, I don't know what you have.

UGH! Got a runtime error with Trains .com.

Jerry- Nice looking home you have there. Especially like the, what appears to be, 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner or GTX in the driveway. Don't let the monster truck back over it.

Lee- Global warming. The only time we have Global Warming is when the Global Warming people are flapping their lips. And when Congress is in session of course.

Now, progress on the....... I have no name for the railroad. Hm. I have no name. Guess I'll have to work on that. Anyway, hooked up the board for Gold Creek and so far all is well. I can run a train back and forth like Robby said but I can't make a loop. I like loops. That however will be a while in the making as I'll have to complete the around the room. So it looks like I'm stuck with a point to point for a bit. Nothing wrong with that, just not my preference for me. Having some trouble with the little 4-4-0. It doesn't want to move well at all. Cleaned the tender wheels and of course that helped and I've determined it needs more weight in the tender to make good contact with the track. Also some adjustments on wheel width seem to be in order. First time I have really looked at the thing since I got it and determined it ran. Which it does, just ruins the whole effect with someone placing a finger on the tender to get the thing to run. I know it's a cheap little thing but it will do what I want just fine. But first, or should I say during, I must clean up the layout and the room it resides in. I think I'll do this in honor of Jeff not being able to easily clean his, if at all, for a bit.

Have a Great Day!!!

Todd..........That's the bathroom we were fighting about, oh......a month or so ago.   Some people like my accent, but when I talk like a few "southerns" I know, man they laugh!!!  Example:  I would say fire.  Some people I know would say fur.  Another example:  I would say tire.  They would say tur.  Just like a line from the movie Gettysburg.  Some C.S.A soliders get caught by the North and the captain asks them "why are you fighting?"  A rebel says "rats" .  The captain said "what?".  The rebel "rats, we are fighting for our rats".  Which he ment "rights".

Morning ya'll

Took my midterm exam for one of my classes. I studied for once and had the thing finished in 20 minutes, and only had to stop to think a bit on 1 question. I'm pretty sure I got at least a 95%

Jerry, That's and intresting one. That actually looks pretty close to lots of the houses here.

Todd and Jeff, at least it wasn't the "OOPS" thing again. I probably just jinked the place with that one.

Robby, I'm from the south and I don't have a problem when I go up north. I've never been to NE, so maybe it's just that area.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the Ham 'n' Eggs special this morning, eggs scrambled with whole wheat toast.  Don't forget a big hot cup of dark roast in a FGLK mug as well.  I'll go sit at the front booth and watch the snow falling.

Yep!  Thermometer says 40°F outside but is snow flakes falling out of the sky this morning here in the Finger Lakes.  We are just about at the high for the day and it will get down to 30°F tonight.  So when I get up tomorrow morning there should be a nice coating of white frost on all the roofs around here.

Kieth, the Finger Lakes are in Central New York, and are a group of lakes formed by glacial action during the last Ice Age.  Canada is up north from here across the Big Lake (Ontario).  Although Barry lives in Ontario, Canada but is about 225 mile due west of me.  Since most of the weather systems around here move from West to East I experience whatever storms and such that he gets a few hours later than he does..........  Well you asked!Wink

Gotta go relight the wood stove and warm the place up.  Later!

 Good Afternoon Folks,

Zoe, I have some coffee and cookies to munch on - or should I say biscuits?

Speaking of accents - I never had a problem with those US accents, from down south all the way to up north. Some of those "British" accents give me a hard time but nothing beats Indian English - Big Smile I remember being at a conference in Tokyo, where we all had to give an introductory speech. We were all but one non-native speakers. After the Brit gave his speech, a guy from Malaysia stood up and asked him to repeat what he just said, ´cause he had not understood a word - Laugh

In Germany, people from Bavaria or  Saxony have a hard time to make themselves understood in the northern part, where I live. The various accents we have are so distinct, that we have subtitles on TV!

Petra and I are still awaiting the confirmation from the landlord. There is so much we have to take care of concerning the move that waiting is eating on our nerves.

Next time I am around I will be bringing some of Petra´s award winning Linzer Torte with me!

Y´ all have a good day!

Good morning.

Ulrich .... I liked the photo of the Rhinegold train. Very nice! ... The Linzer Tot must be really good. I love scrumptious goodies!

Regarding accents. The local people here who have never lived elsewhere have their own version of "Southern"

One story involves a daughter who visited from Michigan maybe 6 or 7 yrars ago. Her husband was one of those who had always lived in Michigan and had done little traveling. He was really impressed with himself for actually traveling to Kentucky.

We took them to eat at the lodge of a huge resort park with lots of forest and on the lake.

We had Sunday buffet there which has a variety of really good southern dishes.

We all went to the salad bar first, and were still eating salad when the son in law (SIL) was ready for the main course.

He returned with a very full plate of food. He proudly told our daughte he had some whale meat.

Daughter immediately began laughing in surprise, and she said "Whale Meat !???"

SIL got a little huffy with her and said. "Yes, I asked the man three times, and that is what he said it was."

I was the next from our table to go to the main course buffet. I returned laughing so hard I could barely speak!

I explained I filled my plate with vegatables and so on.

Next I went to the man who sliced the beef.

The man asked; "Rare or Well"

The KY accent of "well" is "wale".

I was thinking as we were discussing accents, that I don't have much trouble understanding anybody regardless of where they are from, well sometimes the Cajuns would throw me for a bit with their mix of French Fried English as I called it. But that wasn't as much the accent I think as it was their words and they talked fast to boot. But anyway, when Vincent mentioned New Englanders I have to say I do have trouble with them sometimes. Again I think because they talk so fast.

Had a bit of a polarity problem. I forgot that with the redesign, the loop in the peninsula with the elevator between Gold Creek and the town with no name, is no longer on the return side which makes the right track now the left. Sooo, when the old choo choo pulled onto the loop it stopped. Oh well, just switch some wires and all should be good. I'll make DOUBLE sure this time. The loop is insulated so it did not show a short and the loco I had that I used to test was of course facing in the wrong direction so I had left and right in my head in relation to the loco that was sitting there. When I ran it, naturally it ran in the correct direction so it went unnoticed until I tried to go from one segment to another. Lack of attention. I've made Mr Murphy leave so I should be good for the day. I hope.

EDIT: Pretty funny accent stories by the way.

Afternoon,

Select British accents (Welsh) and NE Irish (Dublin) accents I have trouble with.  I’ve been to 21+ countries and I’ve managed well with the exception of those.  USA and England two countries separated by a common language, LOL.  I dated a girl from London for a while and after some basic translation of common words like boot (trunk of a car), loo (toilet), *** (drunk), I could hold my own in a conversation.

Jeff, you guys have had too much rain from what I hear, but I bet that lake (the one you shared pictures of this summer) is full by now.  Where did you get the tree background???

Rob, how’s the water by your house?

We have had rain for the better part of 4 weeks now; the ground is slushy under your feet.  If this freezes over the weekend we are going to have some ground heaving issues.

You'd lose that bet. The lake is still just as far down as it was in the summer. It won't come back up until the work on the dam and spillway is completed. I got the tree background from Walther's. It's made by Busch.

Jeff.. nice to see you made it back safely from 'out and about'  I thought of you as I found a movie..

Hell in the Pacific  with Lee Marvin (US Marine) and a Japanese naval officer stranded on a deserted island in the pacific in the middle of WW II.  Its my only form of entertainment when I work on the layout.  Have you seen that movie?

Yes I have. After weeks of tormenting each other they finally put aside their differences and learn to learn to work together in order to survive.
